Leadership Akron Awards Ken Babby and the Akron RubberDucks ‘The Read Family Difference Maker’ Award

Akron, OH (October 6, 2022) – Leadership Akron presented the 2022 Read Family Difference Maker Award to Ken Babby and the Akron RubberDucks at a ceremony on September 28, 2022. Each year, the award recognizes an individual or group of individuals whose efforts have been instrumental in expanding the scope or impact of Leadership Akron’s mission and work.

In January 2015, Ken Babby launched a monthly speaker series for Leadership Akron Alumni members and Torchbearers called Leadership on Main. This speaker series highlights change-making leaders from different sectors each month, and it has become an essential monthly event for many Leadership Akron alumni members.

“Ken Babby and the Akron RubberDucks have been instrumental in advancing Leadership Akron’s work since Ken Babby took over ownership of the team ten years ago,” states Justin Hilton, President & CEO of Leadership Akron. “The Akron RubberDucks host hundreds of Leadership Akron participants each year, helping inspire, strengthen, and empower leaders to create a greater Akron.”

The Read Family Difference Maker Award, created in July 2017, honors the Read family, Roger, Judy, and Scott, in recognition of their involvement in advancing the mission and work of Leadership Akron, promoting community leadership, and strengthening the Akron community’s well-being. Each year, the award recognizes an individual or group of individuals whose efforts have been instrumental in expanding the scope or impact of Leadership Akron’s mission and work.

To show gratitude, two sculptures were created by Zeber Martell, one for the Akron RubberDucks to display in its offices at Canal Park and a second for Ken Babby. And, as Scott Read noted when presenting the award, “…this event has been a work of love by the entire Akron RubberDucks staff that is greatly appreciated by the alumni of Leadership Akron.”

Leadership Akron would like to also thank the organizations that have been involved in the preparation and maintenance of the site for the Read Family Difference Maker Award, including the City of Akron, Summit Metro Parks, Cascade Locks Park Association, Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, and Environmental Design Group, as well as Michael Marras, who created the original sculpture at the site, titled “Together We Grow.”

Salute to the Negro Leagues Night: Akron Black Tyrites vs Jax Red Caps

On Saturday, July 9, the Akron RubberDucks will take on the Altoona Curve in a very special Salute to the Negro Leagues night. The Akron RubberDucks will honor the Akron Black Tyrites while the Altoona Curve will honor the Jax Red Caps by wearing the salute to the Negro League uniforms of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

The Akron Black Tyrites were a member of the Negro National League in 1933. The club began that year in Columbus before moving to Akron for just 10 games. The team finished the season in Cleveland as the Giants.

The name was originally supposed to be “Tyr-ites” from the British word for tire, “tyre,” but the name soon became “Ty-rites” to match Akronites.

The team played their games at Akron’s League Park, which was a $135,000 ballpark constructed in 1928 on property at Crosier Street, Park Avenue, and Long Street.

Since the team only played a small number of games in Akron, only a few photos of the front of the uniform jersey appeared when the RubberDucks front office staff began research. To celebrate and honor the original Akron Black Tyrites, the RubberDucks created logos and uniforms in a style the team might have worn in 1933.

The Red Caps were originally formed by a group of local Black train porters, employees of the East Coast Railroad, that played together when they were off duty. The porters wore red hats as part of their uniform, and they were called the Red Caps during their workday. The team was officially put together by the Jacksonville Terminal Station and managed by player Alonzo “Fluke” Mitchell. The Red Caps, who called Durkee Field home, only played seven league games in their debut season in the Negro American League in 1937, finishing with a 4-6 record. They played more than 180 games between 1938 and 1944 and recorded a winning percentage of .401. The Red Caps moved to Cleveland in 1939 but return to Jacksonville in 1941. They finished the season at 12-20, coming in second to last in the league. The 1942 season was no better for the club, with a 7-22 record, and the team was dropped from the league in July. The Red Caps played as an unaffiliated team at Durkee Field in 1944.

Durkee Field, which is now known as JP Small Park, is one of only five Negro leagues ballparks still in existence. Edward Waters University, which is a local HBCU, used the field now for their games, as well as some local high schools. Outside of JP Small Park is a statue of Buck O’Neil, who is going to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown this summer. Buck attended Edward Waters College before his Negro leagues playing and managing career and MLB scouting and coaching career. He then went on to found the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

RubberDucks to Host Virtual Auditions for National Anthem Performers

 

(AKRON, OHIO) February 21, 2022 – The Akron RubberDucks are launching a virtual search for National Anthem performers for the 2022 season. All interested singers, vocal groups (five singers or fewer), and musicians must send a digital submission via video of their acapella or unaccompanied performance of the National Anthem no later than Friday, March 11th.

Virtual submissions are the ONLY way to audition for 2022 national anthem performances at Canal Park, no other arrangements can be made at this time.

Performers can submit their auditions by sending their video, along with their name(s), address, and phone number to [email protected]. Digital submissions can be accepted via YouTube video, Vimeo, WeTransfer, or other transfer site that allows for downloading videos.

All virtual auditions must meet the following criteria:

  • All auditions must be no longer than two minutes
  • All participants are encouraged to use the highest possible audio and video recording available, within reason. Cell phone videos are perfectly acceptable. Please make sure the camera is steady, oriented horizontally, and that the performer(s) are shown clearly in the center of the shot if possible.
  • Auditions should be recorded in a well-lit area.
  • It is not required to have a clear or scenic background; however, an area free from distractions is best.
  • Duet and group auditions are acceptable

(AKRON, OHIO) February 14, 2022 – The Akron RubberDucks will host job fairs for a variety of gameday staff positions on Tuesday, March 1 and Thursday, March 3, in the Duck Club by Firestone. Both events will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Applying is easy! Interested candidates only need to bring a resume and may complete an application before or at the job fair. Candidates do not need to pre-register for an interview. They may come to either event and enter the Duck Club through the doors facing Main Street.

Black History Month Feature: Five Notable Players in Franchise History

In celebration of Black History Month, throughout February, teams across Minor League Baseball are taking a look back at five of the best Black players to suit up for their club.

While some of these standout performers went on to long and illustrious Major League careers, others simply had great Minor League careers or, in some cases, just one incredible season that went down as “a year for the ages.”

Here is a look at five of the best Black baseball players ever to suit up for the Akron RubberDucks franchise.

Albert “Joey” Belle

Before becoming the big muscle in the middle of the Cleveland lineup in the mid-1990s, Albert Belle went by the name Joey and was a member of the brand-new Canton-Akron Indians in 1989. Belle was a force in the new franchise’s lineup, batting .282 with 20 homers, 20 doubles and 69 RBI for the “Little Indians” in 89 games.

Belle’s strong season caused Cleveland to promote the 22-year-old up to the Majors in 1989 where he appeared in 62 games and drove in 37 runs. Belle spent 12 years in MLB playing for Cleveland, Chicago and Baltimore while batting .293 with 381 home runs, 389 doubles and 1,239 RBI.

CC Sabathia

One of the biggest names to come through Canal Park, Sabathia made his debut for the Aeros in 2000 at the age of 19. Sabathia made 17 starts for Akron and went 3-7 with a 3.59 ERA, 90 strikeouts and an opponent’s batting average of .223 in 90.1 innings pitched.

The following season, 2001, Sabathia opened the season with Cleveland and never looked back en route to a 19-year career with Cleveland, Milwaukee and New York earning a Cy Young award in 2007 and a World Series ring in 2009. Sabathia finished his big-league career 251-161 with a 3.74 ERA and 3093 strikeouts.

Dave Roberts

Before swiping one of the biggest bases in ALCS history for the 2004 Boston Red Sox and before becoming just the second African American manager to win a World Series with the 2020 Dodgers, Roberts was traded from Detroit to Cleveland with Tim Worrell for Geronimo Berroa in late June 1998. After joining the organization, Roberts made an immediate impact in the Akron Aeros lineup batting .361 with seven home runs, 33 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 56 games.

His sparkling play earned him an end-of-year promotion to Triple-A Buffalo in 1998 and in 1999, Roberts made his Major League debut for Cleveland. Roberts spent 10 years in MLB for Cleveland, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Boston before becoming the first base coach for the Padres in 2010 and Dodgers manager in November 2015.

Grady Sizemore

Sizemore came to the Cleveland organization in late June 2002 as part of a blockbuster deal that sent Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew to the Montreal Expos for Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips and Lee Stevens. In 2003, Sizemore made himself a household name to the baseball world when he hit .304 with 13 home runs and 78 RBI while swiping 10 bases in 128 games for the Akron Aeros, leading them to their first Eastern League Championship. The follow offseason, Sizemore catapulted all the way up to number 9 on the Baseball America prospect rankings.

In 2004, Sizemore made his debut in Cleveland and began a six-year stretch as one of the top players in MLB, making three straight All-Star teams from 2006-2008 and leading Cleveland to the ALCS in 2007. Injuries unfortunately derailed Sizemore’s career, but in total the outfielder spent 10 years in MLB for Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay hitting .265 with 150 home runs and 518 RBI.

Juan Hillman

In 2021, Hillman had his best professional season in 21 games with Akron, going 10-4 with a 3.77 ERA and 85 strikeouts. Hillman tossed the RubberDucks’ only complete game in 2021 when he tossed seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out six against the Altoona Curve in the second game of a double header on Aug. 6.

Hillman led qualifying pitchers in the Double-A Northeast in ERA (3.77) and led the league in wins with 10 when he was promoted to Triple-A Columbus on Aug. 31. Hillman’s performance helped the RubberDucks finish a league-best 73-46, and the team won the league championship. After the season, Hillman was named to the Double-A Northeast All-Star team as the top left-handed pitcher.

Akron Black Tyrites Logo on Social Media for February

 

In honor of Black History Month and to help share the story of Negro League Baseball in Akron, the Akron RubberDucks will change their social media profile pictures to logos inspired by the Akron Black Tyrites for all of February.

The Akron Black Tyrites were a member of the Negro National League in 1933. The club began that year in Columbus before moving to Akron for just 10 games. The team finished the season in Cleveland as the Giants.

Akron completed a one-hit shutout to defeat Altoona, 5-0.

The RubberDucks will honor the Black Tyrites in future seasons by wearing the uniforms for special games.

RubberDucks to donate $1 of each walkup playoff ticket to Somerset Community

 

(AKRON, OHIO) September 22, 2021 – In the wake of the devastating flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Ida the Somerset County, New Jersey, community experienced on Sept. 2, the RubberDucks hope to aid in the rebuilding efforts by sending donations to the Somerset Patriots official charity. The club will donate $1 from every walkup ticket sold during RubberDucks home playoff games to The Somerset Patriots Children’s Educational and Sportsmanship Foundation.

“We are very appreciative of the Akron RubberDucks and their efforts to help raise funds to help the people in Central New Jersey affected by Tropical Storm Ida,” said Somerset Patriots President/General Manager Patrick McVerry. “Since the floods hit our area, we have received nothing but unbelievable support from our friends throughout the Northeast League. Whether that came from donated items for an online MiLB auction, Hartford taking on some of our games, and now Akron putting our fans at the forefront of their community efforts, we couldn’t be more grateful. A very special thank you to the Babby family, general manager Jim Pfander, and the entire RubberDucks organization for their generosity. RubberDucks Mascot Auditions To Take Place By Appointment Ahead Of 2021 Season

The Akron RubberDucks are searching for performers to play the four mascots, Webster, Rubberta, Homer, and Orbit during RubberDucks home games for the 2021 season.

RubberDucks Team Up With Local Small Businesses, Akron Public Schools For Two February Community Initiatives

 

(AKRON, OHIO) February, 3 2021 – The Akron RubberDucks are proud to announce two community initiatives in support of February’s celebration of Black History Month: The Local, Minority-Owned Business Spotlight and the Black History Month essay contest. During the month of February, the Akron RubberDucks will launch two simultaneous initiatives to promote and celebrate the diversity of backgrounds in the Greater Akron area.

Minority-Owned Small Business Spotlight

First, the RubberDucks will utilize team social media channels to showcase one minority-owned business within the Greater Akron per week for the month of February. Businesses will be selected through a nomination process via the Akron RubberDucks website where nominations include the business’ name, website, social media handles, and a testimonial about its importance to the community. Business owners as well as customers are encouraged to nominate their favorite minority-owned small businesses in the Greater Akron community.

Black History Month Essay Contest

Second, the Akron RubberDucks and Akron Public Schools have teamed up to introduce a Black History Month essay contest for students kindergarten through 12th grade. Students will be asked to submit a double-spaced, one-page essay on what Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream Speech” means to them personally. Winners will be selected from three groups of students: Grades K-5th, 6-8 and 9-12.

This essay contest begins Feb. 3, and submissions will be accepted until Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Each entry must be submitted to [email protected] and must include the student’s name, age, grade level and school in order to be accepted for the contest. Each grouping will have one winner for the contest and that student will win tickets to an upcoming RubberDucks game for their whole class. Winners of this contest will be notified by email and announced on Feb. 26.

RubberDucks To Feature Sports Industry Leaders In First Women In Sports Virtual Panel Sept. 2nd

 

(AKRON, OHIO) August 25, 2020 – The Akron RubberDucks are proud to announce their first ever Women in Sports Virtual panel featuring a variety of women who have established themselves as leaders in the sports from all across the country on September 2, brought to you by State & Federal Communications. This virtual panel is free to the public via Zoom invite link, beginning promptly at 7 p.m. on September 2, and is expected to run until 8:30 p.m.

Attendees can sign up to join this free Zoom webinar by visiting https://www.milb.com/akron/team/registration and a confirmation email will be sent to attendees by 5 p.m. the day they sign up. The Zoom webinar link will be sent the morning of September 2 with relevant login information. This live panel will be emceed by RubberDucks lead broadcaster, Marco LaNave, and will feature the below executives who have graciously offered their advice and insight on their experience working within the sports industry:

  • How they began their journey in the sports industry, and how they subsequently rose through the ranks into the top leaderships they held throughout their careers
  • The challenges that these leaders faced while starting in an industry predominantly run by men
  • What factors and experiences shaped these women into the respected leaders they have become in the sports industry
  • The benefits and value of strong mentorship in order to empower future generations of women to break into the sports industry
  • What challenges still exist and affect women’s ability to break into and advance within the sports industry

Senior Spotlight Series Rolls On At Canal Park With Two Midweek Senior Night Games August 4th & 6th

 

(AKRON, OHIO) July 31, 2020 – The Akron RubberDucks are thrilled to host two more games in this summer’s socially-distant Senior Spotlight Series at Canal Park featuring teams from all over Northeast Ohio. On August 4th the Brunswick Blue Devils will square off with the seniors from Highland and Barberton high schools, while on August 6th Cuyahoga Falls and Woodridge will take a trip down Route 8 to face off one more time at Canal Park.

Each game will be a traditional seven-inning exhibition with gates opening to fans at 5:00 p.m. and first pitch at 6:05 p.m. at the home of the Akron RubberDucks. Both games will be broadcast live on the radio at 640 WHLO, the new home for Akron RubberDucks baseball, beginning at 6 p.m. These games mark the sixth and seventh Senior Spotlight games to be held at Canal Park this summer.

These games will offer student-athletes from the class of 2020 a way to celebrate Senior Night together after the high school spring sports season was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak. This senior night will certainly be memorable as players will have their pictures on the video board and pregame celebrations will commemorate the occasion.

“This obviously isn’t the way these student-athletes envisioned their senior seasons playing out, but we are excited to offer them one last opportunity to take the field wearing their school’s colors,” said RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander, “This summer we have made sure to safely offer this opportunity to our community and we are so excited to celebrate these student-athletes in their final game. “

July 30 will feature another Suburban league showdown as Nordonia High School takes on Wadsworth High School, and July 31 showcases the Royals of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (CVCA) against the Titans of Triway High School. Each game will be a nine-inning exhibition with gates opening to fans at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch at 7:05 p.m. at the home of the Akron RubberDucks.

Despite the high school spring sports season being cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, each team will be able to celebrate Senior Night in a memorable way as players will have their pictures on the video board and pregame celebrations will commemorate the occasion.

“This summer has been unlike any other, but we are so thrilled to offer these student-athletes the opportunity to play one last game as seniors under the lights here at our ballpark. (AKRON, OHIO) July 20, 2020 – Canal Park will once again play host to another night of celebration for the Class of 2020 as the Hudson Explorers will take on a combined team from Kent Roosevelt and Stow-Munroe Falls High Schools on July 25. This third installment of Senior Night features a Suburban League rivalry matchup with first pitch of the nine-inning game set for 7:05 p.m. at the home of the Akron RubberDucks.

Due to the high school baseball season being cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, each team will be able to celebrate Senior Night in a memorable way as players will have their pictures on the video board and pregame celebrations will commemorate the occasion. Post-game fireworks for this event will begin shortly after the conclusion of this game.
