Fireflies to Host MLB Youth Skills Competition & Home Run Derby

March 31, 2021

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Columbia Fireflies today announced that they will host two Major League Baseball Youth Competitions at Segra Park in April: The Pitch, Hit and Run Competition and the Jr. Home Run Derby. Both competitions are the official youth competitions of Major League Baseball and are a fun and exciting way for youth players to showcase their abilities locally, regionally and nationally.

The Pitch Hit and Run presented by MLB Network Competition will take place Sunday, April 18 and the Major League Baseball Jr. Home Run Derby will take place Sunday, April 25. Both competitions will be open to children under 14-years-old and registration is free for both events.

Children can participate in both events but must register separately for both individual events. Children who are not registered for the event through the official MLB registration link will not be eligible to advance to the regional competition.

The Pitch Hit and Run Competition presented by MLB Network Competition will be divided between boys and girls and further divided into four age divisions: 7-8 years old, 9-10 years old, 11-12 years old and 13-14 years old. Winners of the local competition held at Segra Park in each gender and age range will have the opportunity to advance through three levels of competition, ultimately culminating in the Finals during the Major League Baseball World Series.

Participants can register for the Pitch, Hit and Run online here. All participants should bring age verification, such as a copy of a birth certificate or something similar, to the competition.

The Major League Baseball Jr. Home Run Derby divides boys and girls into two age divisions, 12 and under and 14 and under. Champions from both divisions will move through a Regional Level prior to having an opportunity to compete at the finals during MLB All-Star Week.

Participants can register for the Jr. Home Run Derby online here. All participants should bring age verification, such as a copy of a birth certificate or something similar, to the competition.

Each event will begin at 11am on their respective day. Participants will be put into 30-minute time slots throughout the day in order to limit the number of people on-field and in the ballpark at one time. All participants who have registered for the event will be contacted one week prior to the event to select what time slot would work best for them. Each 30-minute time slot will be limited to 10 kids.

Families are invited to watch their child participate in the competitions but will not be allowed on field. Non-participants will be required to wear masks at all times and are expected to practice social distancing both when seated and when walking on the concourse.

For questions about either event, please contact Nick Spano by email at [email protected].

Drillers Uniforms to Feature Special Patches to Help Raise Awareness of 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial

March 15, 2021

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

The Tulsa Drillers, in conjunction with the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission, have announced plans to wear a special patch during the first month of the 2021 season to raise awareness and encourage Drillers fans to educate themselves about the massacre while honoring its victims and their families.

The Drillers received permission from Major League Baseball to feature the patch on the fronts of their home jerseys. It will be located just above the Drillers logo that runs across the jersey fronts.

The Drillers will wear the jerseys for all home games during the month of May. At the conclusion of the month, the jerseys will be available for purchase using an auction process. Proceeds will benefit the programs and operations of the Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center (“Greenwood Rising”), currently under construction. Greenwood Rising will be a state-of-the-art history center located at the southeast corner of Greenwood Avenue & Archer Street, the gateway to “Black Wall Street.” This museum-grade facility will showcase all aspects of Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District, triumph, tragedy, and everything in between, from its origins to the present day.

Phil Armstrong, Project Director for the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission, shared his excitement about the added exposure the uniform patch will bring.

“Having this logo on the Tulsa Drillers jerseys gives us the opportunity to enlighten and educate baseball fans who may have thought they were just out for a day at the ballpark,” said Armstrong. “We are loading the bases for awareness of Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District, a history of tragedy and triumph, punctuated by reminders about the indomitable human spirit, in this space the Tulsa Drillers call home.”

The Drillers have called Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District home since moving to ONEOK Field for the 2010 season.

“We are honored and fortunate to have our home, ONEOK Field, in Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District,” said Drillers General Manager Mike Melega. “The ability to wear these special patches is a small way that the Drillers organization can help to raise awareness of the tragic events that took place in 1921. We appreciate the willingness of Phil Armstrong and the other members of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission to give us this opportunity.”

The jerseys with the patches will not be the only commemorative attire for the Drillers during the upcoming season. In honor of this year’s Juneteenth celebration, the Drillers players will wear throwback T-Town Clowns jerseys for three games, June 11-13. The T-Town Clowns, a popular team from the historic Negro Baseball Leagues era, played in Tulsa for many years.

The Drillers first wore replicas of the T-Town Clowns original jerseys during the 2011 season. The jerseys from this year will also be sold through an auction process, with those proceeds going to the Lacy Park baseball field renovation project. The original baseball diamond at Lacy Park, located at 2134 N. Madison Place, served as the home of the T-Town Clowns from 1952 through 1965.

Earlier this year, the Drillers and the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce announced plans for a large, Jackie Robinson mural to be added to the back of one of the historic Greenwood buildings that faces ONEOK Field. Work on the permanent mural has just been completed.

Cardinals Teacher of the Month: Kevin Zimmerman, Harrison Elementary School

March 12, 2021

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield Cardinals and Missouri Lottery are proud to announce Kevin Zimmerman of Harrison Elementary School as our February Teacher of the Month.

Mr. Zimmerman is an amazing art teacher! Students love coming to his class and look up to him as someone they would like to be when they grow up. On “normal” school years Mr. Zimmerman leads a running club for students which has a huge turn out. During these times he has still found a way to host an Art Club which provides students with a great after school activity.

Kevin has been an art teacher at Harrison Elementary since 2009 and was one of five finalists for the 2019-20 Springfield Public Schools Teacher of the Year award, where he described his views on his profession:

“Making connections is expressed in two ways for me, the personal, human connection that I develop with my students and the cross-curricular connection my art content makes with all other disciplines. When I say I ‘teach’ art, I really wish to say I teach a bit of everything. The more pathways the brain makes to a piece of information, the better the recall and the longer the information is held.”

A St. Louis native, Kevin attended Drury University. Beyond the classroom, he leads an art club and a running club at Harrison Elementary that provide students with after-school activities and growth opportunities.

“Mr. Zimmerman is an amazing art teacher,” one Teacher of the Year nominator wrote. “Students love coming to his class and look up to him as someone they would like to be when they grow up.”

To show gratitude for their important contributions to the Southwest Missouri community, Kevin and each future Teacher of the Month will receive one Cardinals luxury suite rental, one ceremonial first pitch, recognition on the Cardinals video board and Cardinals caps for their group, all made possible by Missouri Lottery.

Created as a way to honor local-area educators from all grade levels, the Cardinals Teacher of the Month Award program, presented by Missouri Lottery, is an opportunity for the Southwest Missouri community to shine the spotlight on teachers who are making a difference in the lives of their students during these challenging times.

One hundred percent of Missouri Lottery profits are earmarked for education. In fact, since the Lottery began 35 years ago, it has generated more than $6.5 BILLION for the state and public education.

Timber Rattlers to Hold Jersey Auction for Charity Starting March 15

March 12, 2021

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers never got on the field in 2020 and never had a chance to wear the Brewers Sunday jerseys that were picked out for them. There will be new Brewers Sunday jerseys for the 2021 Timber Rattlers and that left the never-worn jerseys sitting in the team offices. These pieces of a season that never happened won’t be around our offices much longer because there will be a Charity Auction starting Monday, March 15 at 9:00am. You will be able to win one of the jerseys up for bid and help raise money for Timber Rattlers Give Back.

Additionally, the Timber Rattlers have partnered with Live Source to give fans a much easier on-line auction experience this season. Fans should download the Live Source app from The App Store on Apple phones or from Google Play on Android phones for the best results. Please visit LiveSourceApp.com for more information.

Potential bidders may also continue to participate through the web by using their browser. The Brewers Sunday Jersey auction may be accessed at this link.

There will be 42 jerseys up for bid beginning March 15 at 9:00am. All jerseys have an official Milwaukee Brewers 50th Anniversary Season patch and a starting bid of $85. There are three different closing times on the auctions on Sunday, March 21. The closing times are 6:30pm for group one, 6:45pm for group two, and 7:00pm for group three. This will allow fans to bid on a different jersey of the same size if they miss out on a winning bid in a previous group.

There will be fourteen jerseys in group one with one size 44, three size 46, seven size 48, and three size 50. Group two has fourteen jerseys with four size 46, seven size 48, and three size 50. Group three also has fourteen jerseys with four size 46, six size 48, three size 50, and one size 54.

Timber Rattlers Give Back is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2019 to provide financial support and raise awareness of charitable causes in the Fox Valley community in the areas of educations, youth sports, and basic needs.

The jerseys will be shipped to the winners the week of Monday, March 22.

Keep that Live Source app on your phone because the Timber Rattlers will have several more jersey auctions during the 2021 season. The team will announce the jerseys and the dates for the auctions closer to Opening Night.

Welcome to clubphilanthropy.com!

Minor League Baseball clubs have been actively involved in their communities for many years. For the first time, their activities and contributions will be chronicled on this site.

Clubs don’t publicize all of their activity, so these stories represent a mere fraction of the contributions MiLB clubs make to their communities every year.
