Shuckers & American Red Cross to Host Blood Drive at MGM Park

February 3, 2021

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

The Biloxi Shuckers and American Red Cross announced Wednesday that a blood drive will take place at MGM Park on Wednesday, February 17th from 1:00pm-7:00pm to assist in restocking the blood supply shortage faced by the pandemic.

When asked about the necessity of blood donations, American Red Cross Senior Account Manager Denise Smith said, “There is a constant need for blood, patients need blood and/or blood products every two seconds.” Due to the pandemic and winter storms, numerous blood drives were cancelled both locally and nationally, creating a higher need.

Those interested in donating are advised to schedule an appointment online by visiting www.redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code SHUCKERS. Appointments can also be made by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All blood donors who participate will receive a custom Mardi Gras themed t-shirt courtesy of the Biloxi Shuckers and American Red Cross while supplies last. COVID protocols will be in effect including a temperature screening prior to entry, providing masks and hand sanitizer and extended cleaning between each donor. Additionally, all donations will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies.

“The COVID antibody testing tells the donor whether they have been exposed and their body has created the defensive antibodies,” said Smith. “If a donation tests positive for the antibodies we will test that sample again to see if the plasma can be pulled out of that donation to go to current critical COVID patients. This enables donors to not only help save up to three patients but possibly help a current COVID patient.”

Group Sales Coordinator Layton Markwood noted, “The Shuckers are thrilled to partner with the American Red Cross to help support our community in this time of need. We are constantly working to be an active member of our community and we’re honored to be able to offer up our facility for this important event. We look forward to seeing all of our generous fans at MGM Park on February 17th.”

Full Shuck Nation Memberships,Half Shell Shuck Nation Memberships, Flex Plans and Group Outings for the 2021 season are available by calling 228-233-3465, option 3. A full game schedule will be released at a later date.

M-Braves Present Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute With $5,000 Grant From The Atlanta Braves Foundation

September 11, 2020

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

PEARL – In conjunction with the Atlanta Braves, the Mississippi Braves are joining together with the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute in their extraordinary effort to empower the youth of color in central Mississippi through education and community activation. In keeping with the mission of the Atlanta Braves Foundation to support youth-serving programs in our community, a grant for $5,000 was presented to the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute at Trustmark Park on Friday, September 11.

“Along with our parent club, the Atlanta Braves, we are proud to partner with the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute in their mission to impact the lives and future careers of the youth in central Mississippi,” added Pete Laven, Mississippi Braves vice president and general manager. “In the spirit of Medgar and Myrlie Evers, the M-Braves look forward to participating in the Institute’s efforts in providing equitable environments in our community.”

The Evers Youth Empowerment Scholars program (E.Y.E.S.) is about providing Mississippi youth of color with education, training, character development, and team-building skills that will empower them to become actively engaged in their communities. Program components include academic training, community service, and physical activity. These activities instill within our youth, honor, confidence, hope, forgiveness, and responsibility. Values we want to see all of our youth embody each day.

“The Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute is excited and appreciative to begin a relationship with the Atlanta and Mississippi Braves,” said Reena Evers-Everette, executive director of the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute and daughter Medgar and Myrlie Evers. “This gift will help support our ongoing efforts for justice and healing, enhancing our organization’s abilities to support communities through our youth empowerment initiatives. Now especially, with elevated conversations about racism and demands for change, it is inspiring to have the Atlanta and Mississippi Braves support our mission.”

About the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute:
Medgar and Myrlie Evers are widely regarded as two of the most outstanding leaders of the civil rights movement. Medgar Evers was a pioneering visionary for civil rights in the 1950s and early 1960s in Mississippi. From the beginning, Myrlie Evers worked alongside her husband, Medgar. In the years following his assassination, she continued the pioneering work they began together in 1998. She founded the Medgar Evers Institute, with the initial goal of preserving and advancing the legacy of Medgar Evers’ life’s work. Anticipating the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers on June 12, 1963, and recognizing the international leadership role of Myrlie Evers, the Institute’s board of directors changed the organization’s name to the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute.

About the Atlanta Braves Grant Program:
Each year, the Atlanta Braves Foundation grants funds to youth-serving organizations that focus on health, education, and recreation; and whose plans for the requested funds will have a significant impact upon the individuals served by the requesting organization.

“Although great strides in the field of human relations have been made, we cannot let up now!”

April 28, 2020

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

For every $10 donated, the M-Braves will donate one ticket to a future home game to a local hero

PEARL, April 28, 2020 – The Mississippi Braves today announced they are joining MiLB CommUNITY First, a new national initiative developed by Minor League Baseball, in conjunction with Feeding America® and Mississippi Food Network to raise funds for local food banks and to honor individuals risking their lives on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

M-Braves fans are encouraged to visit MiLB.com/CommUNITYFirstthrough May 31 to donate. Once on the site, fans can choose their donation amount and the Mississippi Braves as the recipient of their donation to direct funds to the central Mississippi community. For every $10 donated, the M-Braves will donate one ticket to a future home game this season or in 2021 to a local hero of the pandemic.

“The central Mississippi community is known for rallying around those that are in need. The M-Braves, together with our fans, look forward to partnering with MiLB CommUNITY First, Feeding America and our friends at the Mississippi Food Network on this important initiative.”

School closures, rising unemployment and rising poverty due to quarantine and extended stay-at-home orders have disproportionately impacted people already at risk of hunger and could result in an estimated additional 17.1 million people experiencing food insecurity in the next six months, according to Feeding America. As the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization with a network of more than 200 affiliates, Feeding America has projected a $1.4 billion shortfall in the next six months alone.

In response, contributions from Mississippi Braves fans and Minor League Baseball will help ensure families and individuals across the country most impacted by the pandemic are fed and cared for during these uncertain times. Join the national campaign by donating and selecting MISSISSIPPI BRAVES at MiLB.com/CommUNITYFirst and use #MiLBCommUNITYFirst on social media to show your support.

M-Braves blanked on Saturday in front of 5,473 fans for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Night

August 17, 2019

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

PEARL, MS – In front of a crowd of 5,473 at Trustmark Park on Saturday, the Birmingham Barons (55-66, 28-24) turned the tables on the Mississippi Braves (58-65, 25-29), tossing a one-hit shutout to win the rubber match of the series, 3-0.

The Mississippi Braves, in partnership with Gold Glove Charites, recognized local youth on Saturday by wearing the name of a child battling cancer on the back of each specially designed jersey. Those jerseys were sold via silent auction with funds going towards custom-designed, once-in-a-lifetime experiences for local children battling cancer.

Claudio Custodio  (L, 4-4) made his second-straight start for the M-Braves on Saturday, throwing a season-high 82 pitches, but suffering the loss. Over 3.2 innings, the 28-year-old gave up three runs on fives hits while striking out four and walking four.

Birmingham scored all three of their runs in the top of the third inning. Nate Nolan and former M-Brave Luis Valenzuela reached on singles to start the inning, but Custodio bounced back and sat down the next two batters. With two outs, Damek Tomscha, Gavin Sheets and Ti’Quan Forbes recorded three-straight RBI singles to give Birmingham the lead.

For the second time in three games, a Birmingham starter was perfect through 3.0 innings. Tanner Banks (W, 2-7) struck out five over 7.0 innings of one-hit baseball, notching his first win since June 6. Ray-Patrick Didder  led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single, Mississippi’s lone hit on the night.

Once again the M-Braves’ bullpen was fantastic. Tyler Matzek  made his organizational debut on Saturday, and the former Rockies first-round pick (11th overall) in 2009 retired all seven batters, striking out five over the 2.1 innings. Matzek was signed by Atlanta on Wednesday and Mwas assigned to the roster on Friday. The California native was pitching for the Independent American Association’s Texas Airhogs.

Jason Hursh  made his first appearance since being activated from the IL on Wednesday and worked 2.0 innings of one-hit baseball, striking out two. Ben Rowen , the submarine right-hander, struck out two over a perfect top of the ninth inning. The three relievers combined for 5.1 innings of one-hit baseball, walking nobody and striking out nine.

Luis Ramirez (S, 4) came in for Banks in the eighth inning and pitched the final 2.0 innings to finish off the shutout.

The Barons clinched the season series, taking six of ten meetings in 2019 from the Braves.

The M-Braves begin the second-leg of the 11-game homestand on Sunday and welcome the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for six games in five days. RHP Connor Johnstone  (5-3, 4.23) will start for the M-Braves against RHP Jhoan Duran (1-3, 7.58) for the Wahoos. First pitch is set for 5:05 pm with coverage beginning at 4:50 pm on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, First Pitch App. and MiLB.tv (subscription required).

Sunday’s Promotions:

Halfway To Mardi Gras Raises Over $5,000 For K&J Foundation

September 7, 2018

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

Prior to their South Divisional Playoff game on September 5, the Biloxi Shuckers presented a check to Brian and Yvette Pearse of the K&J Foundation for $5,399.56. The funds were raised from the Shuckers “Halfway to Mardi Gras” jerseys.

“Brian is a part of the Shuckers family, and when an opportunity presented itself to help out the K&J Foundation, we were thrilled to do what we could to help out,” said Shuckers General Manager Hunter Reed. “We want to thank Matt Stebly for designing another eye-grabbing jersey for the Shuckers, and we hope that the money raised helps Brian and Yvette continue their work to increase seatbelt safety awareness.”

Founded by Brian and Yvette, the K&J Foundation is committed to raising teen seatbelt safety awareness as a legacy to their children, Kiara and Jameel. During their game on August 18, the Shuckers wore special jerseys for “Halfway to Mardi Gras” night designed by local artist Matt Stebly. The game worn jerseys were featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter that morning and were auctioned off during the game. Fans were able to meet Shuckers players on the field and receive their jersey after the game concluded.

The Shuckers remain committed to community involvement and proactively seeking ways to improve the quality of life along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This season, the Shuckers have raised over $13,400 through jersey auctions, special events and sponsorship that have benefited organizations throughout the greater Biloxi area.

Playoff tickets for the Biloxi Shuckers 2018 Postseason can be purchased at the MGM Park box office or over the phone through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Group outings are also available and can be reserved by calling 228-233-3465 or visiting www.biloxishuckers.com.

Welcome to clubphilanthropy.com!

Minor League Baseball clubs have been actively involved in their communities for many years. For the first time, their activities and contributions will be chronicled on this site.

Clubs don’t publicize all of their activity, so these stories represent a mere fraction of the contributions MiLB clubs make to their communities every year.
