Dragons to Host 2014 Anthem Health and Fitness Carnival

On Sunday, August 17, the plaza outside Fifth Third Field will host a multitude of fun, free activities as a part of the annual Anthem Health & Fitness Carnival. This annual event is a great opportunity for parents and their children to learn about healthy lifestyles, grab some cool giveaways and enjoy a day of family fun at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, but as early as 12:30 p.m., fans can come to the plaza to enjoy FREE health screenings, chair massages, airbrush tattoos, balloon animals, raffle prizes including a fitbit flex, free bike helmets for the first 100 kids (ages 5-12), inflatable games, and much more, courtesy of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Kettering Health Network. Dragons mascots Heater and Gem will be in attendance, as well. The carnival will run until 2:30 p.m.

Stop by and enjoy the fun before the Dragons game out on the plaza, and then enjoy the game inside the ballpark. A limited number of lawn tickets for the game are still available.

Bats donate over $6,800 to Kosair Children’s Hospital

The Louisville Bats Baseball Club will donate more than $6,800 to Kosair Children’s Hospital, the beneficiary of the first ever Star Wars Night held on Sunday, July 27 at Louisville Slugger Field.

A crowd of 10,015 showed up at the ballpark to watch the Bats play host to the visiting Charlotte Knights in special edition Star Wars jerseys. On Monday, July 28 the authentic jerseys were put up for auction on batsbaseball.com and available for bidding until Monday, August 4.

With the bidding period now over, the 50 jerseys were sold for $6,854.80 with all proceeds going to Kosair Children’s Hospital.

“Star Wars Night was a great success and we are pleased to be able to make this gift to Kosair Children’s Hospital,” said Bats President and CEO Gary Ulmer.

For more than a century, Kosair Children’s Hospital has cared for the children of Kentucky and Southern Indiana without regard to their families’ ability to pay. Kosair Children’s Hospital is Kentucky’s only full-service, free-standing pediatric care facility dedicated exclusively to caring for children and is an advocate for the health and well-being of all children.

Trisha Baxter to be Honored at Fifth Third Field on July 25

Vectren Corporation and the Dayton Dragons will host Trisha Baxter during the unique “Community All-Stars” program on Friday, July 25, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Quad Cities River Bandits at Fifth Third Field.

The Dayton community is a great place to live, work and play. But what makes Dayton truly great are the people that call Dayton home. We have great people and great organizations in our community that do incredible things each and every day. Throughout the season, the Dragons and Vectren will honor 35 “All-Stars”-anyone from firefighters to first responders, non-profit organizations to Good Samaritans-and their families with a VIP treatment at a Dragons game in recognition of their service.

Trisha’s Story

A good night’s sleep is essential to re-energize for the day to come, especially for children. Teacher Trisha Baxter learned just how necessary sleep is in her classroom of six and seven-year olds several years ago.

“I was giving a math test and one little girl in my class turned her test in blank,” Trisha explained. “I asked her why she didn’t do it and the girl told me it was because she was too tired and wasn’t sleeping well. When I asked why, she told me because it is cold on the floor.”

Trisha went around her whole class that day, asking each child the same question. She discovered over half of her classroom was sleeping on the floor each night. She knew she had to help.

Trisha founded Snuggled Up, an organization that donates kits of bedding to children in the area without a place to sleep. Included in a snuggle kit is an air mattress, sheets, pillow, and a blanket. Snuggled Up has now given close to 450 kits to children in need.

“My mission is to keep giving children like that first little girl snuggle kits so they are no longer dreaming on a floor,” Trisha said.

For helping provide bedding to hundreds of children in need, Trisha has been selected as a Dragons Community All-Star. The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.

Charity Softball Game at Fifth Third Field to Raise Money for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton

The Dayton Police Department and the Dayton Fire Department have teamed up with the Dayton Dragons to host “Battle of the Badges,” a charity softball game, on July 27, 2014 to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. The Dragons host the Cedar Rapids Kernels at 2 p.m. that afternoon and the softball game between Dayton’s finest will follow.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is the largest, most-established “no-kill” animal welfare agency in the Dayton region. As a 501(c)(3) organization, they receive no government funding and rely solely on donations to run their programs and services. Each year, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton saves the lives of thousands of animals and ensures that all animals are valued and loved within the Dayton community.

“As first responders we have an obligation and duty to assist the citizens of Dayton,” said Officer Nathan Speelman, Captain of the Dayton Police softball squad. “As a team, we strive to further assist and support local charities in the Miami Valley. We feel this is a great opportunity to raise money to help support The Humane Society of Greater Dayton.”

“On behalf of the Dayton Fire Department and Local 136, we would like to thank the Dayton Dragons organization and the Dayton Police Department for allowing us to participate in the Battle of the Badges Softball Game again this year,” noted Scott Davis, Captain of the Firefighter team. “The proceeds from this year’s charity game will go to help the animals at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Dragons and Ford Present Honor Them Program

All season long, the Dayton Area Ford Dealers will be honoring Miami Valley veterans and telling their service stories at Dayton Dragons games. Please join us on Sunday, July 27 as they recognize local veteran Shawn Brunello.

Veteran Shawn Brunello’s Story

Dayton native Shawn Brunello has spent nearly half of his life in the U.S. Marines. From mapping convoy routes between bases and criminal investigation to escorting entertainers, Brunello, now a Chief Warrant Officer, has served in many ways while deployed.

Brunello joined the Marines after high school, following his twin brother into the service. He was first deployed to Iraq in 2003 and again in 2005. In 2011, Brunello was deployed to Afghanistan and worked as a convoy commander. He facilitated the transport of food and equipment from a primary base to outlying bases. Every couple weeks, he would map out the routes for convoys which could include from 20 up to 270 vehicles. The destinations never changed, but the road they traveled always had to be different to avoid enemy detection and ensure as safe of a passage as possible.

One of the biggest changes Brunello found across his earlier deployments was communication, both with his family and with the vehicles in the convoys. During his early deployments in Iraq, his convoys had to rely on maps and two-way radio to communicate as they drove across the Iraqi deserts. While from a personal standpoint, he was only able to call home every couple of weeks.

By his 2011 deployment to Afghanistan, technology had progressed enough where he was able to talk to his family every day and could track vehicle convoys, as well as enemy locations through satellites.

Brunello currently lives in Washington Township with his family and is a system engineer for LexisNexis. He is still part of the Marine Reserves, and commits one weekend a month to his service, training and teach other Marines.

4th Annual Subway Dragons 5K at Fifth Third Field One Week Away

Subway Spokesperson Jared Fogle Scheduled to Appear at Event

Registration is well under way for the SUBWAY® Dragons 5K, with over 1,500 people already signed up to join SUBWAY® spokesperson Jared Fogle for the race on Saturday, July 19 at 9am. In 2013, the SUBWAY® Dragons 5K became one of the largest races in the Miami Valley and with current registration numbers and new activities slotted for the post-race party, it is well on its way to being bigger and better for 2014.

“The Subway Dayton Dragons 5k race is a great way to bring the family together for exercise and fun. Starting and ending at Fifth Third Field makes this annual event a special day and one I especially look forward to. Hope to see everyone there again on July 19!” says Jared Fogle on the impact of the event.

All participants in the run receive an official dri-fit shirt, stadium seat tickets to a Dragons game and three vouchers good for one (1) 6″ FRESH FIT® sub, one (1) breakfast sub from SUBWAY® and one sub of the participant’s choosing.

An awards ceremony will take place after the race. The top three male and female finishers will receive a specially-engraved baseball bat. Dragons Celebrate Matt Louis, Community All-Star

Heavy flooding after a very rainy day on May 21 led to a dangerous situation on interstate 75. Thankfully for several local residents, a hero was ready to risk his life to save others.

Flood waters rose quickly along interstate 70 near Huber Heights. The water consumed several cars, leaving them stranded and in need of help. Matt Louis stepped up to the plate.

“It was all instinct,” Matt said. “A little bit of adrenaline kicked in. One woman was screaming that she can’t swim, and I just had to help.”

Matt waded into flood waters that reached his chest and approached one of the cars. He carried an infant from the car back to safety and then went back to help the baby’s mother. Matt went out for a third time to save another woman in a second car who was unable to swim.

“Matt really earned his Superman cape,” Erin Dorn, a friend of Matt’s, said. “We were just glad everybody was okay. That was very brave to go out there in the water not knowing what the current was.”

For risking his own life to save the lives of others, Matt has been selected as a Dragons Community All-Star. The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.

Dragons to Honor Community All-Stars Tuesday

Vectren Corporation and the Dayton Dragons will host Scott Hannah and Tyler Gregory during the unique “Community All-Stars” program on Tuesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field.

Scott and Tyler’s Story

Scott Hannah and Tyler Gregory were unlikely friends. Rivals on their high school cross country team, the two often competed against each other. When their coaches suggested they start running together, Scott and Tyler became fast friends and discovered they had more than just running in common. The teens shared a desire to make a change.

Bullying had become commonplace amongst the students at the school Scott and Tyler attended. While it was something many talked about, no one seemed to be doing anything about it. Scott and Tyler decided to take a stand. The two made an anti-bullying video that included over 70 students at their school. The video was submitted to “The Great American NO BULL Challenge” and was a top 15 finalist.

“When we put the video together, we tried to think about everyone from those being bullied to those doing the bullying and even those that were bystanders and how we could speak to each one,” Scott explains. “After showing the video at our school, students started apologizing to those they had bullied in the past. Bullying became the weird thing to do.”

Scott and Tyler started speaking to schools around the Dayton area about their experiences being bullied and they themselves being the bully which propelled them to team up with “The NO BULL Challenge” as national spokespeople.

“We’ve been to over 25 states and have spoken to over 35,000 students,” Tyler said. “Most students we talk to can say they have been bullied. What is really unique is when students admit they themselves have been a bully. We want to reach everyone and truly change the atmosphere of the schools we visit.”

For taking a stand and making an impact on schools around the nation, Scott and Tyler have been selected as Dragons Community All-Stars. The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.

Bats host Military Appreciation Day during eight-game homestand

The Louisville Bats begin an eight-game homestand Thursday, May 22 at Louisville Slugger Field that will feature two fireworks shows, a patriotic hat giveaway and Military Appreciation Day.

The patriotic cap giveaway on Saturday, May 24 will be the second of the Bats’ four regular-season cap giveaways. The caps will be given to the first 2,000 fans through the gates. The Bats will face the Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, for four games from Thursday, May 22 through Sunday, May 25.

Military Appreciation Day will be on Monday, May 26. All retired and current military personnel and their families will receive free field reserved tickets with proper military identification. Monday will feature the first of four games against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.

Fireworks during this homestand will be on Friday, May 23 and Memorial Day Eve on Sunday, May 25.

The Bats depart for Columbus on Friday, May 30 for the first two games of a split four-game series with the Columbus Clippers, Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The team returns to Louisville for two more games with Columbus on Sunday, June 1 and Monday, June 2. Sunday, June 1 will be 50-Cent Hot Dog Night at Louisville Slugger Field.

Louisville finished a 6-2 road trip through Norfolk and Durham on Tuesday and comes home sitting in third place in the IL West at 22-23, just 4.0 games back of first-place Indianapolis. The trip was the team’s first six-win road trip since July 2010. Outfielder Felix Pérez is hitting .296 in May and leads the International League in RBI and extra-base hits in the month, including four home runs on the road trip.

The Bats have averaged 8,979 fans per game at Louisville Slugger Field since its opening in 2000 and have totaled over 8.8 million fans through 14 seasons. BOGG to be honored at Fifth Third Field on May 9

Vectren Corporation and the Dayton Dragons will host Jason Barton and Jason Johnston during the unique “Community All-Stars” program on Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Fort Wayne Tincaps at Fifth Third Field.

Jason and Jason’s Story

Jason Barton and Jason Johnston met several years ago at their church leading a small group of high school students together and became fast friends. When searching for a place in Miamisburg to serve the community with their small group, they discovered a lot of need and not enough being done to meet the need. The two friends decided to do something about it.

“It was just something that was on my heart,” said Barton. “Anytime we go out with friends or family, it is always over a meal. And there are a lot of hungry people in our community. The best way to get out and reach them is to feed them.”

They both left their full time jobs and founded BOGG (Because of God’s Grace) Ministries in 2010, feeding about four families a week. Barton and Johnston, working unpaid for the first 18 months of BOGG, would go to each family’s house, have dinner, and provide them with groceries. The ministry rapidly grew and within seven months, BOGG was reaching 35 families. The next step for BOGG was mobile meals

Mobile meals is a system BOGG Ministries uses to reach the eight communities they now serve. They visit each area once a month with their mobile food pantry, fire up a grill, have a meal with the families, and provide groceries for one to two weeks.

“In 2013, we provided just under 250,000 meals,” Johnston explained. “Currently we are providing food for 1,500-1,800 people a month. It’s not just about the food though. Relationships are key. It is about being compassionate with our neighbors.”

For giving back selflessly to the community they are a part of, Barton and Johnston have been selected as Dragons Community All-Stars. The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.

Dayton Dragons players and one of the team’s mascots, Heater, will visit six local elementary schools beginning this Tuesday. The visits are part of the Dragons MVP program and members of the local media are invited to cover them. The players will introduce themselves to the students, answer questions and take pictures. Girl Scout Overnighter At Fifth Third Field

WHAT?

The Dayton Dragons will host the second annual Girl Scout Overnighter at Fifth Third Field. Girl Scouts from Western Ohio will place their tents at Fifth Third Field, and camp out for the night. The Scouts will be offered a snack with the opportunity to watch a movie on the video board before they go to sleep. In the morning, the Dragons will provide breakfast for the Scouts at 7:00 a.m.

WHEN?

Friday, May 9, 2014 following the completion of the game between the Dayton Dragons and the Fort Wayne Tincaps.

WHO?

Over 400 Scouts from the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio will be part of the overnighter. Parents and families are welcomed and encouraged to join their Scouts at the overnighter.

WHERE?

The Scouts will be able to place tents on the outfield grass at Fifth Third Field.

Dragons to Participate in Great American Cleanup

May 10th Event is Part of the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful program

As part of the Great American Cleanup initiative, the Dayton Dragons and the Montgomery County Environmental Services will host a cleanup event on May 10th from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at 624 Xenia Avenue in Dayton (East End Community Services). Dragons players, staff members, Heater, and the Dragons Green Team will pitch in to clean the surrounding neighborhood along with volunteers who can register at daytondragons.com/cleanup or by calling Nisha Jaga at (937) 228-2287 ext. 115.

The Dragons event is one component of the Great American Cleanup initiative and the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful program. It is a volunteer program for individuals or groups and a great way to give back to the community.

“We take a tremendous pride in the upkeep of Fifth Third Field,” Dragons President Robert Murphy said. “The Great American Cleanup is a great way for us to get out in the community and help with the upkeep of the city that surrounds us.”

All participating volunteers in the Dragons cleanup event will receive a Dragons hat and will be entered into a drawing for other great Dragons prizes.

About the Great American Cleanup

The Great American Cleanup is the largest organized volunteer litter cleanup and community improvement program in the country. This long standing Keep America Beautiful event, which runs annually from March 1 until May 31, is sponsored locally by the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful (KMCB) program. Keep Montgomery County Beautiful provides volunteers with cleanup supplies and can assist with litter disposal. KMCB can also help coordinate cleanup events and provide other resources for large scale community projects. Fifth Third Field to Host Flame of Hope 5K

Fifth Third Field will host the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 3rd from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Heater, the Dragons mascot, will be in attendance.

A portion of proceeds will be used to send several children with epilepsy to Camp Flame Catcher. Camp Flame Catcher is designed to give kids with epilepsy a typical camping experience that their friends enjoy with the added benefit of trained epilepsy specialists.

The event will include a traditional timed 5K for all runners and walkers as well as a one mile stroll. The event will begin on the Plaza at Fifth Third Field and continue along the scenic Great Miami River.

Join Fifth Third Bank And The Dragons As We Strike Out Hunger

Fifth Third Bank and the Dayton Dragons have partnered with the The Foodbank, Inc. in efforts to assist families fighting hunger in the Miami Valley. From April 28-May 1, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. on the plaza at Fifth Third Field, donations of canned goods and non-perishable food items will be accepted. Items will be donated to The Foodbank, Inc. to provide meals for those in need.

“Each Fifth Third Day, May 3rd, Fifth Third and our employees celebrate our commitment to our communities and to fighting hunger,” stated Doug Compton, Fifth Third Bank’s Dayton City Executive. “Through volunteerism and donations, we’re proud to partner with the Dayton Dragons and their fans in support of The Foodbank, Inc. and efforts to Strike Out Hunger.”

Michelle Riley, CEO of The Foodbank, expressed the need for the donations. “Throughout our tri-county region, our member hunger relief charities serve about 16,000 meals every day to children, families and seniors,” she said. “We cannot respond to the enormous need for food assistance without the generous support of community partners like Fifth Third Bank and Dayton Dragons.”
