Reno Aces to host second “Home Run for Life” ceremony on Friday

June 4, 2021

RENO, Nev. – The Reno Aces will host their second Saint Mary’s “Home Run for Life” ceremony of 2021, featuring Antonette Shaw-Costa, a breast cancer survivor,on Friday, June 4 when the Aces take on the Sacramento River Cats at 6:35 p.m. PT at Greater Nevada Field.

Since 2014, the Aces and Saint Mary’s have partnered to showcase the “Home Run for Life” program. Once a month, a brave individual in the Northern Nevada community is honored by taking a ceremonial trip around the bases with each team lining the baselines. The ceremony symbolizes the end of a battle against adversity. Individuals honored have overcome a significant medical event in their life with the help of Saint Mary’s personnel.

Antonette is an embodiment of a warrior’s heart, battling through thick and thin and still coming out on top.

In January 2018, Antonette found the infamous sign of cancer in her right breast and on her lymph nodes, a lump. It was not long before the words “you have cancer” were uttered from her doctor’s mouth and left her in a world of “deafening silence”.

The news was shocking for Antonette but, she turned to social media as an outlet and started a video blog called Antonette Inspires to provide support not only for herself but, for those who also needed to know they were not alone.

This warrior went through six months of chemotherapy, six surgeries and six and a half weeks of strong radiation to banish those cancerous cells. Through her 18-month bout with breast cancer, Antonette continued to show her strength, grinding out her everyday job as a realtor by nearly breaking her own personal sales goals in the process and also found love as a newlywed last year.

In the coming months, Antonette will be a competitor in the Breast Cancer to Bikini Competition in October to take back her mind, body and spirit.

Antonette will round the bases commemorating her “Home Run for Life” in the middle of the second inning on Friday night. The Reno Aces and the Sacramento River Cats players and staff will be lined up at a 12-foot distance to greet her as she makes her way toward home plate.

Greater Nevada Field gates open at 5:35 p.m. PT on Friday, June 4. Tickets are on sale now at www.renoaces.com or by calling (775) 334-7000.

Aces to Host “Home Run for Life” Ceremony on May 28

May 28, 2021

RENO, Nev. – The Reno Aces will host their first Saint Mary’s “Home Run for Life” ceremony of 2021, featuring Amanda Petch, a cervical cancer survivor,on Friday, May 28 when the Aces take on the Tacoma Rainiers at 6:35 p.m.

Honored individuals of the run have overcome a significant medical event in their life with the help of Saint Mary’s personnel.

Amanda Petch embodies the true sentiment of what it means to be a warrior, defying all odds and coming out victorious in her battle against cervical cancer.

In early 2020, Amanda and her husband found out they were expecting their first child. Like any parent, both were overcome with joy and excitement to welcome their newborn. During their first ultrasound appointment, regular testing was done as well as their first sight at the soon-to-be baby boy.

Unfortunately, a moment of happy feelings quickly turned “hopeless and broken” as her doctor found a lump on her cervix that turned out to be cancerous. Add in the tumultuous circumstances surrounding COVID-19 on top of the pregnancy and the lump, the future was unknown.

With a great support team from her family, friends, and prayer warriors from around the country, Amanda battled through all the curveballs thrown her way. She delivered her healthy son six weeks early through a c-section and endured over 30 combined rounds of chemotherapy en route to her victory.

On April 21, 2021, Amanda officially took down cancer after a year-long battle when her final scans showed no signs.

Amanda will round the bases commemorating her “Home Run for Life” in the middle of the second inning on Friday night. The Reno Aces and the Tacoma Rainiers players and staff will be lined up at a 12-foot distance to greet her as she makes her way toward home plate.

Greater Nevada Field gates open at 5:35 p.m. PT on Friday, May 28. Tickets are on sale now at www.renoaces.com or by calling (775) 334-7000.

Reno Aces celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

February 3, 2021

To celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Reno Aces are sharing thoughts from the women in the organization that make the team go.

“The purpose of National Girls and Women in Sports Day is to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, recognize the influence of sports participation for women and girls, and honor the progress and continuing struggle for equality for women in sports,” said Aces general manager Emily Jaenson.

Today marks the 35th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). This celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life. We invite you to celebrate NGWSD in your community and to join the Women’s Sports Foundation as we Lead Her Forward in 2020.

More information on how to get involved is available here. Hear how sports and working in the industry have affected some of the women in our organization:

Emily Jaenson – General Manager

“I was an athlete growing up playing just about every sport you can imagine and it provided to me sisterhood of friends and fun, the experience of winning, and knowing what it feels like to work hard and see improvement. All of these aspects are essential to my life today in my career!

I am an athlete today; participation in sports taught me the importance of moving my body and overall health and wellness. Keeping fit allows me to do all of the things I want to do today including having the energy to juggle a full-time demanding job, be a mom to my little boys, and pursue my hobbies.

I look to today’s female athletes and women leading sports organizations for inspiration. Women continue to break barriers and this work lead HER forward in the next generation.”

Laura Raymond – Membership Development Director

“When I started my career in sports with the San Jose Sharks in 2009, I don’t think I really understood what I was getting myself into. This industry has not only given me access to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, like being trusted with the San Francisco Giants triplets in 2015 and working the 2019 NHL All-Star Weekend, but also the chance to meet and build friendships with people from all over the country that I never would have met otherwise. Above that, this industry allows me to give back to my community in ways that not many people get the chance to, and I think that is what keeps pulling me back to the world of sports. Bringing exciting and engaging entertainment to our fans game after game never seems to get old, is something I feel so fortunate to be a part of.”

Courtney Baker – Corporate Partnerships Account Manager

“I had known ever since high school that I wanted to work in sports. Here I am in 2021, nine years of experience later. Working in sports is demanding, time-consuming and stressful (at times); but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Nothing beats game days and the friendships you get to make along the way.”

Leah Withrow – Head groundskeeper

“Getting to work in sports is a dream. That feeling I had when I was little, getting to go to the park and kick the ball around, is the same feeling I get everyday. There’s a lot work of work that has to happen, but at the end of the day it’s just fun and baseball games most of the time.”

Stacey Bowman – Chief Financial Officer

“I love working in sports as I am able to be a part of making memories for our fans. As a woman in sports it is important to me to show to our future generations that barriers based on gender should not exist.”

Sarah Bliss – Director of Ticket Operations

“It shouldn’t be noteworthy that I’m a woman working in sports. It shouldn’t be surprising that women are coaches, general managers and referees at a major league level. These should be accepted norms.

Not only am I a woman working in professional sports, I am a coach for Girls on the Run. In both I see the continuing need to inspire young women to recognize their power and potential to achieve their dreams. Those dreams will lead to a world where women achieving whatever they want in sports is the norm.”

Samantha Hicks – Chief Revenue Officer

“Sports unite people, getting to walk into a stadium every day to bring more fans to our games, how cool is that for work?!”

Reno Aces and Reno 1868 FC Donating Toys to Ashlee’s Toy Closet

September 23, 2020

In the midst of possibly the worst fire season on record, the Reno Aces and Reno 1868 FC are donating toys to Ashlee’s Toy Closet.

“We are glad to support Ashlee’s Toy Closet again in a time of need for wildfire victims near our home,” said Aces and 1868 FC president Eric Edelstein. “Thank you to Jakks Pacific for providing these toys in partnership. We hope these toys may bring a small comfort for children experiencing unfathomable tragedy.”

Ashlee’s Toy Closet is a local non-profit that distributes toys to children in and around the area who have lost their homes due to fire.

The toys will be delivered to Phoenix, Oregon in conjunction with Jackson County Fire District No. 5. Donations are still being accepted, and more information can be found on Facebook and Instagram @ashleestoycloset.

The Reno Aces and Reno 1868 FC are thankful for the support of Jakks Pacific and Herb Simon, without whom the donation would not be possible.

Reno Aces to Host Blood Drive with Vitalant

June 16, 2020

The Reno Aces and Reno 1868 FC are partnering with Vitalant to host a blood drive at Greater Nevada Field. Donations will also include testing for COVID-19 antibodies. Aces and 1868 fans, along with all members of the Northern Nevada community, can join the club in saving lives at Greater Nevada Field through Vitalant over the course of June 22-23 from 9am-2pm both days.

“We are proud to host a blood drive at Greater Nevada Field and do our part to serve the community during this challenging time for all of Northern Nevada,” said Aces general manager Emily Jaenson. “This two-day blood drive delivers double the good when you save lives and learn your COVID-19 antibody status, which is especially important given the critical shortage of blood as hospitals have increased surgeries and other procedures. Register online to reserve your time slot to donate at the ballpark.”

For those who have fallen ill with symptoms from COVID-19, but were unable to be tested, antibody tests can prove useful moving forward. Antibody tests are used to determine if someone had a past infection with SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Testing for antibodies does not indicate whether the antibodies neutralize the virus and protect from reinfection.

Beyond identifying whether a donor has antibodies or not, the donation can save lives in a time where blood donations can be scarce.

“Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, so these blood drives are a big part of our efforts to meet patient needs,” said Scott Edward, Donor Marketing and Communications Director for Vitalant. “The summer is a very challenging time to collect blood … we are thankful for the tremendous support from the Reno Aces to help boost our community’s blood supply together.”

Everyone who donates blood will also receive a 20 percent discount for the Aces and 1868 FC team shop.

Walk-ins are welcome, but donation appointments are recommended. To schedule an appointment, call (775) 785-6644 or go online to BloodHero.com to make appointments for Monday, June 22, or Tuesday, June 23. Additionally, COVID FAQs are available here, and antibody test FAQs can be found here.

“My husband Sean said, ‘This is an all-out war against this virus, and we need to do everything we can to help,'” Novak said.

Mirroring the idea of the old Rosie Riveter campaign where you don’t need to be on the front lines to help, they got to work.

Since COVID-19 cases ramped up in the United States in the middle of March 2020, Rounds Bakery has been donating breakfast sandwiches, muffins, coffee cakes, bagels, and cream cheese to local health care workers.

Their delivery trucks have been making stops at COVID testing sites, St. Mary’s, Renown Regional, Renown South Meadows and Northern Nevada Medical Center from about 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. daily.

“When we donate, we try and go a little bit further by labeling things for the COVID team, the ER team, REMSA, etc., and even the people that have to clean the rooms and security guards – all putting their lives in danger for the safety of others,” Novak said.

Not only is Rounds donating food to keep medical workers fed while they fight COVID-19, but they have taken it upon themselves aid the shortage of protective masks for not only health workers, but the public as well.

“Renown Regional had these mask kits they were begging anybody to sew I discovered something new about my husband – he knows how to sew. So he started sewing 25 masks a night for Renown Regional,” Novak said. “But then…we went out and bought fabric so we could make CDC recommended masks, 1200 thread count, and we are selling them in our store for those who want to buy them and those funds help feed our heroes.”

An Air Force veteran and former international pilot, Novak has even called upon his friends from overseas to help aid the shortage of masks in the area.

“I have friends in Hong Kong. A friend of mine works for this company that makes masks, so I said, ‘Ship me 2,000,'” Novak said. “So they FedEx priority overnighted international 2,000 masks to my bakery and we’ve been giving those out.”
Rounds’ work in the community during the COVID-19 outbreak is highly admirable. However, it didn’t take a global pandemic for the restaurant to get involved in giving back.

The giving all started about six years ago when Novak and Cary purchased a struggling bakery with 11 employees about to lose their jobs.
They noticed their inherited staff was throwing away donuts at the end of each day, something that did not fly with Rounds. So they began driving the leftover goods to a homeless shelter.

“We did that for about a month and that became the defining moment for our business model,” Novak said. “We weren’t going to build this restaurant on the backs of the community, but we were going to build it with the help of the community.”

Since 2014 Rounds has truly taken that model to heart by donating over 45 tons of food and $100,000 in cash and in-kind donations according to Novak.

“We have two main pillars of giving, Sean’s family was in education and my family owned a restaurant growing up, so we say, ‘you can’t learn on an empty stomach and you can’t earn a living without an education’ – so let’s get people fed and keep them in school,” Novak said. “Those have been our two fundamentals of giving over the last six years.”

Just to name a few, the bakery has donated to local charities such as Children’s Cabinet, The Eddy House, Boys and Girls Club, Veterans Guest House, Nevada Homeless Shelter and Ronald McDonald House over the years.

A business focused on giving away profit is not always set up for success, but Novak believes Reno has helped this model flourish thanks to the nature of the people who call the Biggest Little City home.

“We are a very generous community to helping those in need, I think we have a deep understanding of the human existence and you can find yourself in a bad place and it’s not that you’re a bad person, you’re just in a bad situation – and I think Reno really thrives on helping those people.”

It’s one thing to be charitable and donate, but if no one likes your food…you’re not going to go very far. Rounds’ product has helped the business become a staple in the community but also has gained award recognition from places like USA Today, Reno Gazette-Journal, American Marketing Federation to name a few.

Want to taste some of their award-winning food? Rounds Bakery has recently converted its restaurant to a marketplace to abide but CDC recommendations. All food is made fresh daily and pre-packaged. You can step into the shop and not even have to talk to anyone by purchasing using Rounds’ self- checkout. They’ve even added everyday essentials to their store to help with the scarcity of supplies.

“We know it’s a challenge sometimes to have to wait in line at Costco for three hours just to get into the building. You’re exposing yourself to so many more people – so for the people that don’t want that big exposure, we sell eggs, milk, we sell toilet paper, we have masks, hand sanitizer, we have these things that we converted our business model and restaurant into a bakery general store,” Novak said.

The Reno Aces are proud to be partners with Rounds Bakery and the work they are doing in the community. Support Rounds and shop Local! The bakery is located at 294 E Moana Ln.

Reno Aces and 1868 FC donating 100% of select team shop proceeds to local hospitals

April 13, 2020

In support of the local healthcare community, the Reno Aces and Reno 1868 FC will be donating 100% of proceeds from a selection of items in the Greater Nevada Field team shop from now until Friday, April 17. The proceeds will go towards assisting Renown, Saint Mary’s, Carson Tahoe and Northern Nevada Medical Centers, as well as Tahoe Forest and Barton Memorial Hospitals in providing direct support to the employees fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funds donated will go towards supporting the staff working in hospitals: protective equipment so the staffs can help others safely, childcare so medical professionals can continue to work, as well as food, groceries and hotel stays to ensure the families of hospital staffs are safe, healthy and fed during the pandemic.

“In speaking with our healthcare partners, there is a significant need for basic necessities, and we want to contribute,” said Aces and 1868 FC president Eric Edelstein.

“We commit 100% of the proceeds of this sale will go directly to those on the front lines against this pandemic. There are heroes among us, and right now they wear masks, gloves and PPE.”

“Residents of The Biggest Little City are doing their part, staying home, and making personal sacrifice during these unprecedented times, but the biggest heroes during this unprecedented crisis are the medical professionals,” Aces general manager Emily Jaenson said. “As an organization whose role is to physically bring people together, we thought, what can we do to help? The answer was a fundraiser where 100% of the purchase price of any pieces in the collection will benefit this community. Please join us in supporting these hospitals in the Northern Nevada community, just as they have always supported us.”

“I’m thrilled that we are able to provide an outlet for our community to support,” said 1868 FC general manager Doug Raftery. “In the end, we are rewarding you with Reno 1868 FC and Aces gear for your donation to our local healthcare workers.”

Aces items going towards the fundraising efforts include team cards, New Era packable visor hats and OT Sport replica jerseys. Reno 1868 FC will offer New Era fitted hats, women’s crew neck sweaters and men’s track jackets. The team store is currently only accepting orders made online, with the Aces team store found here, and 1868 FC’s team store here.

Aces’ Reliever Damien Magnifico Encourages Adopting, Not Shopping

April 3, 2020

When he’s not pumping 100 MPH gas on the mound, Aces pitcher Damien Magnifico spends his time fostering animals. The 28-year-old reliever enters his second season in the D-Backs’ organization, but has become a full-time stay at home dog dad while he waits for baseball to come back.

Fostering animals is not new for the right-hander, he’s been doing it for eight years now. And while adopting is always important, it takes on a new level under the current circumstances according to Magnifico.

“It is always better to adopt but it is more important at the moment, because rescues and shelters aren’t able to have events showing off the animals to the public,”

Magnifico said. “Most shelters are still open but by appointment only. Some are able to promote online but not all of them have the resources to promote the animals and not everyone has the access to that technology.”

While Magnifico encourages adoption, especially now, he stresses the importance of preparing for the commitment of housing animals.

“Each rescue or shelter is a little different, but you basically just let the dog (or cat or rabbit) live with you until it finds its forever home. Many organizations make it free to you to foster by providing medical care. We’ve had fosters that stay a few days with us; to ones that stay with us months and months, and one that was with us for over a year,” he said.

“Do your homework – ask what they do/don’t cover so you know before you agree to get the pet into your home. There are a lot of ways to get involved: you can be temporary foster, medical foster, you can transport, and you can even pick the sizes/temperaments/breeds/medical conditions you feel most comfortable with,” he added.

A pitcher that strikes fear in hitters’ eyes by touching triple-digits on the radar gun, Magnifico has spent time in the Major Leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Angels. In 2019, the reliever was 3-1 over 53.0 innings pitched out of the bullpen split between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Reno to go with a 3.74 ERA and 68 strikeouts.

All things considered; it may be odd to hear that the fierce competitor has such a soft spot for animals but he described the difference of his personality on and off the field the best way he could.

“The two are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Easiest way to explain it is to compare on-duty Sully and off-duty Sully from Monsters Inc.”

For information about how to adopt or become a foster parent, contact SPCA of Northern Nevada by calling 775-324-7773 or by visiting SPCANevada.org. Or get in touch with the Nevada Humane Society at (Reno: 775-856-2000), (Carson City: 775-887-2171) or by visiting Nevadahumansociety.org.

Greater Nevada Field to Host Two Food Bank of Northern Nevada Drive by Distribution Events in April

April 1, 2020

The Reno Aces, 1868 FC, and Greater Nevada Field are partnering with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to provide drive-thru distributions of the Mobile Harvest program on April 7 & 17 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. for community members in need of both shelf-stable and perishable food items.

Community members will have the ability to participate in a grab-n-go food distribution line located in the parking lots adjacent to the rotunda at Greater Nevada Field. Volunteers will be in place to help the flow of traffic.

Because the safety of the clients, volunteers, and staff of the Food Bank are of utmost importance, it is asked that anyone attending a distribution take the following precautions:

  • Please keep safe social distances from others
  • Whenever possible, please limit the number of household members who attend distributions
  • We recommend 1 person per household
  • If you are ill, please do not attend a distribution
  • Clients may have a friend or neighbor pick up from a distribution on their behalf by simply writing a short note to be presented when food is picked up
  • Practice frequent and thorough handwashing with soap
  • Remember to sneeze or cough away from others and into your elbow when possible
  • Volunteers and employees are wearing gloves and sanitizing surfaces for the protection of all served through Food Bank program

If households are in need of help during this difficult time, they are encouraged to reach out to the Food Bank at 775-331-3663 or by visiting the Get Help section of FBNN.org to find the distributions closest to them.

“We are so grateful to the Reno Aces and 1868 FC for allowing us to use their lot for distribution of our Mobile Harvest program,” Jocelyn Lantrip, Director of Marketing for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada said. “Because of their partnership, we are able to operate drive-through distributions that are much safer for everyone involved. It is so important for the community to work together during this challenging time and we are very grateful.”

“We are thrilled to be able to contribute to the Northern Nevada Food Bank’s Mobile Harvest distribution program by hosting at the Greater Nevada Field parking lots,” Aces General Manager Emily Jaenson said. “We are here for the community and are happy to have found a way to contribute.”

“The Northern Nevada Food Bank is a vital part to this community every single day, and we are here to lend a helping hand during these uncertain times,” 1868 FC General Manager of Business Operations Doug Raftery said. “We appreciate what they do for our area, especially in this time of need.”

Aces and 1868 FC Celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day

February 5, 2020

Today the Aces and 1868 FC shine a light on women in sports as we participate in National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Today is about showcasing the confidence, strength, and character of the women in our front office. As Oprah so astutely put, “you can’t be what you can’t see” so here we are, standing up for girls everywhere to show them that if they work hard, anything in life is achievable! There is a place for you to continue your career in sports whether it is on the field, in the training room, broadcast booth, or front office. We can’t wait for you to join us!

February 5, 2020, marks the 34th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).

For more information on how to get involved go to: https://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/get-involved/ngwsd/

Hear how sports and working in the industry have affected some of the women in our organization:

Emily Jaenson, Reno Aces General Manager, Hometown: Lake Villa, Illinois

“Participating in sports was everything to me starting from the age of five when I played my first season of t-ball through my junior year of college where I was lucky enough to continue to play soccer. It helped me to become a team player, a leader, someone dedicated to improvement, and someone willing to hustle.

“I have a tremendous amount of gratitude as my participation in baseball, soccer, gymnastics, iceless hockey, basketball, volleyball, track, cross country, and cheerleading all shaped the woman I am today. Here’s to the next generation of female leadership as we celebrate the importance of equal opportunity for all girls and women in sports today!”

Samantha Hicks, Chief Revenue Officer, Hometown: Milford, Michigan

“Sports unite people, getting to walk into a stadium every day to bring more fans to our games, how cool is that for work?!”

Courtney Baker, Corporate Partnerships Account Manager, Hometown: Scottsdale, Arizona

“Growing up, my gym was my second home. My teammates were my second family. To have another place to feel safe and supported for eight years was such a blessing. Not only was cheerleading fun, it kept me in shape and allowed me to compete under the lights, on stage, in front of thousands of people.”

“Even while I was a cheerleader, I’d take every opportunity during my free time to attend a Diamondbacks game or watch on TV. I spent 20 years in Scottsdale, Arizona, so I grew up watching greats like Randy Johnson and local stars such as Luis Gonzalez, Tony Womack, and Steve Finley. To now have the opportunity to work full-time in the game (and for the Triple-A Affiliate of my hometown team) is surreal. I not only get to work in the sport I have lived and breathed for so many years; but I also get to work for our soccer club as well, Reno 1868 FC. One of the best parts about working in sports is that I’m constantly surrounded by so many strong, powerful women. I can’t wait to continue my career for decades to come!”

Leah Withrow, Assistant Groundskeeper, Hometown: Gardnerville, Nevada

“When I was younger, sports were a chance to run around with your friends and maybe get some orange slices. I really didn’t think too much of it because it was genuine fun and I was just there enjoying all of it. I think I just liked being a part of a team, the discipline and the drive it gave me to push myself. Nothing has really changed for me since deciding I wanted to make a career working in sports. I come into the stadium every day and I love being part the team, pushing myself, running around with my friends and maybe getting some orange slices.”

Ellie Stockwell, Group Sales Account Executive, Hometown: San Mateo, CA

“Sports always felt like home to me, giving me the opportunity to grow and learn and pave my own path, and so working in sports felt like the natural transition. It means more to me than I thought, and gives me opportunities to grow every day into someone I am more and more proud to be.”

Wilma Compton, Community Outreach Account Executive, Hometown: Chico, CA

“For me, sports are about the process: finding the right coach, following the system, doing your best, figuring out how to overcome weaknesses, capitalize on strengths, and collaborating with teammates. Working in sports means that every day I come in to work, I’m excited and enthusiastic to be here and just want to work through the process, because to borrow the title from one of my favorite sports books, “the score takes care of itself.”
