Pelicans team up with HTC and Backpack Buddies

April 18, 2014

Partnership renewed to bring much-needed essentials to underprivileged youth

Myrtle-Beach-PelicansThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, are working with HTC for a second straight season to bring Backpack Buddies Monday to TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The program invites fans to bring certain essentials to the ballpark for donation on Monday home games. Those donating will receive half-price admission on their Monday game ticket.

Starting in 2004, the Backpack Buddies program aims to provide schools with nutritious, child-friendly, self-serve food designed to put in a backpack and feed a child over the weekend. The program began with a pilot program of approximately 300 children. Now, a decade later, the program provides over 1,500 meals a week across Horry County.

The Pelicans are pleased to bring back the program after a successful first year with a valued partner in HTC. To participate, fans can bring the following items to Monday night home games for half-priced admission: powdered drink mix, Ramen Noodles, Pop Tarts, individual servings of pudding, individual servings of apple sauce, fruit cups, jelly (plastic container), peanut butter (small jars), Beanie Weenies, Vienna Sausage, canned meats, cereal, raviolis (pop-top cans), mac and cheese, snack crackers, chicken noodle soup (pop top cans), and unopened containers of mustard, ketchup, and mayo.

Help-4-Kids“The Help 4 Kids organization that runs Backpack Buddies is an incredible group and we’re honored to help them in their fight to ensure that the 2400+ local children have the food and nourishment the kids need,” remarked Pelicans Vice President and General Manager Andy Milovich. “Barb Mains and her staff give these kids a chance to succeed in the classroom and life. She’s a true hero and we’re fortunate to be in a position to assist her in helping kids throughout our community.”

In 2013 the Pelicans raised nearly $400,000 for various local charities. The Backpack Buddies program saw over $9,400 of those funds. This year the Pelicans have set a goal of raising $500,000 total for local charities and $10,000 for Backpack Buddies

Embrace Hospice to Title Sponsor Military Appreciation Program

February 27, 2014

Florence-based Hospice Center to be featured during 11 Pelicans Games

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (FEBRUARY 27, 2014) – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are pleased to announce that Embrace Hospice has signed on as the title sponsor for the Pelicans inaugural Military Appreciation program titled “Embrace Veterans.” Military Appreciation Night headlines the program on Friday, June 6, 2014 when the Pelicans host the Frederick Keys at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Over 11 game dates during the season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans will feature stories of WWII veterans as a part of a new program called Embrace Veterans, culminating in Military Appreciation Night, presented by Embrace Hospice, which falls on the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The program is working with several different veteran-related non-profit organizations in the Grand Strand to honor veterans who served during WWII.

In addition to their involvement in Military Appreciation Night, Embrace Hospice will be a partner for an additional ten game dates throughout the 2014 season. On each of these nights, the Pelicans will highlight veterans during the game at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. This will include a video tribute of select veterans, produced by The Center for Military and Veterans Studies at CCU and presented by Embrace Hospice. A representative from Embrace Hospice will throw out the first pitch alongside a local Grand Strand veteran as well. Information on Embrace Hospice will be available in the concourse for each of these games. The game dates for the Embrace Veterans program are as follows: April 19; May 3, 17, 31; June 6, 7, 21; July 12, 19; August 2, 30.

On Military Appreciation Night, the Pelicans will give away a Veteran Card Set, presented by Embrace Hospice, featuring a variety of veterans from the Grand Strand. The Embrace Hospice name and Embrace Veterans logo will appear on all promotional materials and event details for the night and will also be featured throughout TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Embrace Hospice will receive recognition on the Pelicans Radio Network, which can be heard locally on ESPN Myrtle Beach 1450 WRNN AM and globally on ESPNMyrtleBeach.com and TuneIn Radio, including an on-air, in-game interview highlighting their mission.

“We at Embrace Hospice are very proud to be partnering with the Pelicans in celebrating and honoring our veterans this year. [Many of us here are] veterans ourselves, so this has an extra special meaning to us and the many veterans we employ,” said Kevin McHugh, the CEO of Embrace Hospice. “Our veterans are one of this country’s greatest accomplishments. What they have done for our freedom makes going to a ballgame an everyday thing for Americans. We hope the community joins us this year at Pelicans ballgames to say thank you and to ‘Embrace a Veteran’.”

The Pelicans are currently accepting nominations of veterans to be featured on the video board and/or in the card set. To be highlighted on a particular game night with video board feature, the veteran must be a currently living veteran of WWII. Veterans of all U.S. conflicts, whether deceased or living, are eligible for the card set. The Pelicans will make selections for both the video tributes and the card set from the nominees; all decisions on these matters are final. To nominate a veteran, applications must be filled out and submitted to the Pelicans by e-mail to Katelyn Guild at KGuild@MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, by mail to the Pelicans Front Office located at 1251 21st Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, or in person at the same address, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Applications are available at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com or in person at the Pelicans Front Office.

The Pelicans begin their season on April 3rd when the Salem Red Sox visit TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets for the 2014 season are on sale now. Pelicans begin “Hops for Hospice”

June 4, 2013

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans created a hops garden in the ballpark in the spring of 2012 that has grown into something much bigger than the corner of the Picnic Garden in which it was planted. The hops garden has inspired the creation of an area of the ballpark that features craft beers now known as Hops Heaven, a partnership with New South Brewery to create a signature beer made from hops grown at TicketReturn.Com Field, and a $2 for Tuesday Craft Beer Night for the remainder of the 2013 season.

Local brewery, New South Brewing Company, has taken the hops variety planted at the ballpark and crafted a special beer for fans at TicketReturn.Com Field. Starting on June 11 the beer will be sold at Pelicans games and for every keg that is sold, the team will donate $10 to a local hospice. “It is very unique for a minor league baseball team to brew its own beer like we are this season,” Pelicans Vice President and General Manager Andy Milovich said. “As it is our goal to make a splash in the community this season, we are thrilled to be able to use this neat program to give back to Horry County while creating a truly unique experience for the craft beer lovers that visit TicketReturn.Com Field.”

The Pelicans homemade beer is still without a name, but fans will have an opportunity to change that in the coming days. Until next Wednesday, fans can submit names for the beer on the Pelicans Facebook page, the South Brewery Facebook page and the Myrtle Beach Beers Lovers Facebook page. The beer is a White Pale Ale with lots of citrus notes and perfect for summer enjoyment. The naming contest winner will receive the first beer out of the tap on June 11th, complimentary tickets to the beer tapping party, as well as a Ceremonial First Pitch.

“We’re excited about the new venture with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans,” said New South Founder Dave Epstein. “Beer and baseball go together so great. The beer we’re making is an American White Ale meets an American Pale Ale. We took the American White Ale that we produce year-round and infused it with American citrus hops to accentuate the White Ale that is spiced with coriander and orange peel. Adding the citrus hops really plays off of that citrus note to create a light and flavorful taste and aroma. It goes down real easy, but has a unique flavor unlike any other light beer out there.”

Starting this Tuesday, June 4, craft beers will sell for $2 at all Tuesday games. When the Pelicans new beer becomes available, it will also sell for $2 on Tuesday. In addition to New South Brewery beers, the $2 for Tuesday will feature Sam Adams and Foothills Brewery’s Carolina Blonde and Carolina Strawberry.

In addition to $2 craft beers, Tuesday will feature a Craig Kimbrel poster for the first 1,000 fans presented by Sheriar Press and 100.3 The Team. Wednesday will be a Wiener Wednesday with $1 hot dogs. Thursday is “Guaranteed Great Weather Night” – If any rain falls after the 7:05 p.m. first pitch, all fans will receive a voucher to attend another game. If more than .25 inches falls, one lucky fan will walk away with $10,000.00. Tickets are available online at  www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com or by phone at 918-6000.
