WooSox Preserve Pawtucket Tradition by Sending Two Kids from its Boys & Girls Club to the World Series

October 31, 2022

WOOSOX PRESERVE PAWTUCKET TRADITION BY SENDING

TWO KIDS FROM ITS BOYS & GIRLS CLUB TO THE WORLD SERIES

2022 marks 72nd anniversary of tradition established in 1950

by longtime American League Umpire Hank Soar

WORCESTER, MA – Continuing a Rhode Island tradition that dates back 72 years, the WooSox Foundation, in conjunction with the Worcester Red Sox, will send a pair of youngsters from the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket on an all-expense-paid trip to see Games 1 and 2 of the 2022 World Series at Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX, this Friday and Saturday night.

Nallah Goss, 10, and Nolan Myers, 9, will attend the opening games of the World Series with their chaperones and return to Rhode Island on Sunday.

“These kids are going to remember this experience for the rest of their lives,” said Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket CEO, Jim Hoyt. “We’re grateful that the Worcester Red Sox are continuing this tradition that goes back decades, and that they haven’t forgotten about our kids in Pawtucket. It’s one of our favorite traditions.”

“We’ve had the pleasure of carrying on this amazing tradition for over three decades during my time in Pawtucket – first with the PawSox Foundation and now the WooSox Foundation,” said WooSox Vice Chairman Mike Tamburro, the longtime president of the PawSox. “Once again this year we are pleased to continue this custom in Worcester and give these Pawtucket Boys & Girls Club families a proper send-off from our new home at Polar Park.”

The two children were randomly chosen during a Boys & Girls Club outing at Polar Park this season. This year’s trip marks the 32nd year that the franchise has sent two children from the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket accompanied by adult chaperones to baseball’s Fall Classic.

It all began in 1950 when the New York Football Giants’ longtime running back, Hank Soar, became an American League baseball umpire. Soar, who grew up in Pawtucket and graduated from what is now Tolman High School, had discovered umpiring by Central Mass native Connie Mack, the legendary owner and manager of the Philadelphia Athletics. After Soar established the annual ritual of providing tickets to a pair of children, the City of Pawtucket assumed the responsibility before passing the torch to the Pawtucket Red Sox in 1990. After completing 50 years in Rhode Island in 2020, the club is sending the students this year for the second time as the Worcester Red Sox.

“This long standing tradition has meant so much to our children,” said Pawtucket Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “We thank the WooSox for continuing to provide opportunities for youth in Pawtucket.”

Meet Beth Leatherman, Breast Cancer Fighter & Cancer Survivor’s Park Alliance Board Member

October 26, 2022

“In 1996, at the age of 35, I was diagnosed with breast cancer through a routine mammogram. My surgeon was very positive about getting it all with a lumpectomy and gave me a good prognosis. I also didn’t need to do any chemotherapy because the cancer was not in my lymph nodes.

“17 years later, on Christmas Eve 2013, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. Not exactly the news you want to hear at any time, but especially not on Christmas Eve.

For about a year prior Beth had been complaining to her family doctor that she was having pain in the upper part of her stomach, by her rib cage. Her doctor kept telling her it was just acid reflux, but Beth decided to take it upon herself to go see a gastroenterologist for another opinion. The gastroenterologist ran a few initial blood tests and a CT scan which revealed abnormalities in Beth’s liver along with enzyme levels that were through the roof. Then Beth had a biopsy and the biopsy came back positive. She was sent to an oncologist right away and by Monday, December 27th, 2013 Beth started aggressive chemotherapy which lasted six months and she continues to see her oncologist monthly and take oral chemo medication.”

“I think I was very positive the first time around. That’s not to say that it wasn’t scary. I was scared, but sometimes you just need a wakeup call about life. The second time around was more serious as it had metastasized to my liver.”

“You think cancer of the liver, that’s bad, you can’t live without your liver. Everybody in my life was scared and I know deep down they were all thinking, “she’s not going to make it,” without verbalizing it to me. But I think that brought me and my friends and family closer together and today we make more of an effort to get together.”

“I know everyone’s cancer is different and I do feel blessed that this has not gotten me down mentally or physically. The treatments are tough, but I would tell anyone who is going through this to try your best to stay positive.”

It has been 9 years and Beth continues to fight. Beth tributes a great deal of her strength and success to her 8 years of involvement with the Cancer Survivors Park Alliance of Greenville. The Park has something to offer everyone whether you are fighting cancer, supporting someone, memorializing a lost one or celebrating survivorship.

For Beth, it has been a place for learning, healing, hope and tremendous beauty. Sharing her story with others not only continues to benefit her, but also encourages those battling cancer, their families, friends and caregivers to keep fighting.

Thank you Beth, for sharing your story – The Greenville Drive celebrates your strength and supports you in your fight against breast cancer.

We are partnering with the Cancer Survivor’s Park Alliance to help them launch their NEW Cancer Survivor’s Park Alliance hat. The hat is available to order on https://cancersurvivorspark.org/gift- shop-old/ and https://drive.milbstore.com and will also be in stock at the Drive Team Store!

All proceeds go back to support the Park.

WooSox Infielder Ryan Fitzgerald and Pitcher Durbin Feltman Headline Inaugural “Thank You Care-A-Van” Sept. 29 through Oct. 1

October 15, 2022

After wrapping up their season finale in Rochester, WooSox Infielder Ryan Fitzgerald and pitcher Durbin Feltman lead the club’s Inaugural “Thank You Care-A-Van” that ran from Thursday, September 29, and wrapped up at David Prouty High School in Spencer during their homecoming on Saturday, October 1.

The Care-A-Van began at Elm Park Elementary School in Worcester at 10:00 AM, where Feltman and Fitzgerald read to children, and where the club also partnered with the Juniper Outreach Foundation to install a food pantry in the school. Founded in February of 2020, the Juniper Outreach Foundation helps combat food insecurity in the Worcester Public Schools and provides basic necessities to children in need.

From Elm Park, the WooSox headed to Worcester’s Net of Compassion on Main Street, where they distributed food and supplies to some of the city’s homeless population, and they concluded the afternoon at the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, where they played interactive games with kids in the club’s after-school program.

“It was a pleasure to stick around Worcester for a few days after our season ended,” said WooSox infielder and 2022 Community Spirit Award winner, Ryan Fitzgerald. “Worcester has been a community that’s supported us all season long, and it was a lot of fun to be able to give back with my friend and teammate Durbin Feltman.”

UMass Memorial Hospital was the WooSox’ first stop of the day on Friday, September 29, to cheer up kids going through a challenging time in their Children’s Medical Center. After UMass, the ballplayers spoke to the baseball program at Worcester Academy, along with students in their sports marketing program. Friday wrapped up at the Worcester Public Library for a reading in the “WooSox Book Nook,” followed by a dinner with veterans at Worcester’s Veterans Inc.

“It was great being in Worcester for a few days, doing good deeds throughout this community,” said WooSox pitcher Durbin Feltman. “Worcester was an awesome city to pitch in all season long, and being able to give back for a few days after our season ended was the perfect way to begin the off-season.”

The players and WooSox club officials also attended Anna Maria College’s groundbreaking on Saturday for their new multi-purpose baseball field at noon October 1, and spent the remainder of the afternoon at David Prouty High School’s homecoming in Spencer, taking photos and signing autographs in the school’s gymnasium.

Just days later, on October 4, Spencer and East Brookfield residents voted “Yes” in a special election on a ballot initiative to pay for a $112 million renovation of David Prouty High School.

Auburn Wins WooSox’ Inaugural “Town Takeovers” Competition

October 11, 2022

On Sunday, September 25, as the Worcester Red Sox concluded a sensational second season, during which they attracted well over 500,000 fans to Polar Park, they honored the Town of Auburn as the winners of the inaugural “Town Takeovers” competition—a new program that will expand in WooSox ’23.

Of more than 20 towns and cities throughout Central and Western Mass to be featured in the program this season, Auburn produced the highest turnout with 546 fans on “Auburn Night” Wednesday, June 15.

During pre-game ceremonies at the season finale September 25, WooSox Chairman & Principal Owner Larry Lucchino and WooSox President Dr. Charles Steinberg presented representatives from Auburn with a large trophy and two large championship banners—one of which will remain on display at Polar Park for years to come.

The Auburn representatives were Select Board Vice Chair Sara Rufli; Director of Department of Development and Inspectional Services Darlene Coyle; Stacy Fitzgerald, an administrative assistant within the Auburn Police Department; Sue Strozina, an administrative assistant within the Town Manager’s Office; and Amy and Erik Berg, two teachers within Auburn Local Schools.

At “Auburn Night” earlier in the season, Auburn residents raised $855 for the Officer Ronald Tarentino, Jr. Charitable Fund, which was established in 2018 by Tarentino’s loving family, friends, and colleagues. So, on September 25, the WooSox Foundation matched this donation and presented Auburn representatives with a check for $855.

As this year’s “Town Takeovers” champions, Auburn is guaranteed another “Town Takeover” game during the 2023 season.

WooSox and Country Bank Present Inaugural Police vs. Fire Baseball Classic

October 4, 2022

On Monday, September 26, Polar Park hosted the Inaugural Police vs. Fire baseball classic, presented by Country Bank. A century-old tradition between the Worcester Fire and Worcester Police Departments was restored.

In memoriam to late Worcester Police Officer Enmanuel “Manny” Familia, all proceeds benefited the Manny 267 Foundation. Officer Familia made the ultimate sacrifice on June 4, 2021, when he dove into Green Hill Pond in an attempt to save a drowning teenage boy.

The foundation distributes “Manny Tubes,” life saving floatation devices, to police departments across the country to provide water safety training for their officers and swimming lessons for children.

The game was headlined by an opening ceremony. Firefighters and police officers gathered on the steps of St. John’s Church to pay respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. They then marched down Temple Street, Green Street, over Canal Street, and entered Polar Park through Plymouth Street. Once they arrived at Polar Park, these brave members of our community were greeted by a giant American flag suspended between two fire trucks. Serenaded by cheers from a packed Polar Park, the players made their way onto the field to line up for the national anthem.

Worcester Police Officer Tom Hurley delivered a beautiful rendition of the national anthem while the players were lined up on their respective baselines. Hurley then performed an original song called, “A Hero Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” which he wrote to honor his late colleague and dear friend, Enmanuel “Manny” Familia.

The Ceremonial First Pitch was delivered by Police Chief Steven M. Sargent and Acting Deputy Fire Chief Adam Roche. David O’Rourke, a Worcester Police Officer, and his son, who has played for the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets, Ryan O’Rourke, caught these simultaneous first pitches.

Honorary Captains Ava Roy and Eric Familia delivered the game ball to the mound. Ava lost her heroic father , Christopher Roy, on December 9, 2018, when he and his fellow Firefighters fought a terrible basement fire in a three-story apartment building. Wrapping up a very emotional pre-game ceremony, the family of Manny Familia; Morgan Menard, daughter of Firefighter Jason Menard, who gave his life on November 13, 2019; Lieutenant Governor Karyn Politio; Worcester Mayor Joeseph M. Petty; City Councilors Donna Colorio, George Russell, Kate Toomey, and Sarai Rivera; and Acting City Manager of Worcester, Eric Batista, all delivered the two most important words in baseball: “Play Ball!”

The game went on without a hitch, as the scoring started early when Police jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Fire Department responded quickly, as they tied it and then took the lead over the next two innings.

Mother Nature did not cooperate, as the rain brought a lengthy delay, which inevitably turned into a cancellation. Worcester Fire took home the 3-2 victory in a shortened 2½-inning game.

On a night filled with so much emotion, the brave men of our community were able to distract us and take our minds away from such terrible things. Baseball can provide just that, an escape from the outside world.

$15,670 was raised for the Manny 267 Foundation. Country Bank presented the check to the WooSox Familia, a new WooSox Foundation program that supports the Manny 267 Foundation. This money will be used to help provide and support water safety training for numerous Police departments throughout our country. We look forward to this event becoming an annual tradition in the wonderful world of Worcester.

WooSox Celebrate “Pride at the Park” During Worcester’s Pride Month

September 15, 2022

Worcester’s annual celebration of LGBTQ+ individuals kicked off Friday, September 2, at Polar Park’s “Pride at the Park,” sponsored by George’s Coney Island. The WooSox welcomed local individuals, organizations, and non-profits to celebrate and honor members of the LGBTQ+ community. Fans were treated to performances from drag queens, a raising of the Progressive Pride Flag and the Intersex Progressive Pride Flag, and capped off the night with a colorful fireworks display, set to the theme of “Love is All You Need.”

The night began with a bang when drag queens Regina Jackson and Betti entertained early-access patrons atop the Triple Decker Garden. The queens performed numbers from Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Beyoncé, later becoming available to take photos with fans.

During pre-game ceremonies, Dance on Dance Center, a dance studio in Hudson, performed a rendition of “Unruly Heart,” a special dance about pride, acceptance, and loving unapologetically, while waving Pride Flags high behind home plate.

The WooSox then honored their Heart of Worcester: SWAGLY.

“It was important to us that night that our event directly benefit LGBTQ+ organizations in the city, so we were excited to honor the LGBTQ+ youth group, SWAGLY, of Aids Project Worcester, with our Heart of Worcester spotlight and check presentation of $1,000,” said WooSox Group Experience Coordinator Sarah Malone.

The WooSox invited Betti, a drag queen who plays “Travis” in HBO Max’s new show “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” to throw out a Ceremonial First Pitch. Next up, Regina Jackson, drag queen and creator of the Queer Comedy Lab, threw out a pitch.

Next, country music artist and former assistant coach with the Brockton Rox, was honored as Worcester’s Hometown Hero. Ruby became the first openly gay professional player when he publically came out on September 2, 2021. Friday was the one-year anniversary since Ruby made history, and he was honored with a Ceremonial First Pitch.

“Bryan has been traveling the States with his organization, Proud To Be In Baseball, which he co-founded with other queer ball players,” Malone said. “Their mission is to empower and advocate for the next generation of LGBTQ people in baseball.”

Ruby met fans in the Sherwood Diner during the game.

Finally, Worcester musician Giuliano belted the National Anthem as the Progressive Pride Flag and the Intersex Progressive Pride Flag were raised over centerfield.

As the WooSox game against the Buffalo Bison, Triple-A Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, got underway, Malone saw a “remarkable” presence of non-profits and organizations that specialize in services specifically for the LGBTQ+ community in attendance.

“I was really honored to be able to work with all of these community groups throughout the season, and thrilled with how many wanted to participate,” Malone said.

Among the Polar Park patrons were Rainbow Lunch Clubs for our LGBTQ+ Elders, Disabled Self-Advocacy, Mental Health Care, Trans and Gender Affirming Healthcare, LGBTQ+ Social Services, Queer Foster + Adoptive Homes, and more.

“When I was visiting these groups and checking in on folks, everyone was thrilled at the quantity and quality of fan interactions,” Malone said. “It felt great to take a wheel around the park and see so many guests accessing the non-profit tables.”

The WooSox fell to the Bison 8-10, yet fans were treated to a UniBank Fireworks show to the theme of “Love is All You Need.”

The Worcester pride celebration reverberated through the city, with the Worcester Pride Festival occurring on Saturday, September 10.

WooSox Support Red Cross Blood Drive and Local First Responders on Weekend of 9/11

September 14, 2022

The Worcester Red Sox began the weekend at the American Red Cross Central Mass headquarters at 381 Plantation Street in Worcester, where WooSox front office members and Smiley Ball arrived in the WooSox Foundation Care-A-Van, presented by Bank of America.

The WooSox donated tickets, caps, and souvenirs to incentivize more blood donations for the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts. WooSox Vice President Joe Bradlee and WooSox Coordinator of Marketing & Fan Engagement George Lorin each gave blood on Friday to show their support and help save lives.

“I first became witness to the special relationship the Red Sox has with the American Red Cross back when I was an intern at Fenway in 2012, and have since always tried to donate blood when 9/11 rolls around,” Bradlee said. “It’s exciting for all of us to build upon the relationship here in Worcester, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Red Cross to encourage more people to give blood locally.”

“We’re thankful to the WooSox for supporting our Blood Drive on Friday,” said Nia Rennix, executive director of the Central-Western Mass Chapter of the American Red Cross. “We are always working hard to encourage more local donor turnout, and we applaud the Worcester Red Sox for helping us galvanize local community members to help us save lives.”

And after welcoming more than 3,000 people to Polar Park for the second annual Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival on Saturday, September 10, the team continued their weekend support of first responders by donating 450 tickets, each with $10 of loaded value, to every firefighter in the City of Worcester. The tickets are for the team’s final “First Responder Wednesday” of the season, presented by National Grid on Wednesday, September 21, at 6:45 p.m.

The team made visits to all 10 fire stations in the City of Worcester, and interacted with firefighters at each station to thank them for their service to the community. The WooSox were also joined by Kevin Hartigan, a retired Worcester Firefighter who now works for the team as an Ambassador at Polar Park.

“I thought that this was a very fitting and thoughtful gesture by the WooSox to thank our Worcester firefighters on 9/11,” Hartigan said. “We hope to see many of them back at Polar Park for our final Wednesday home game of the season on September 21.”

The team also donated tickets for September 21 to every Police Officer in the City of Worcester, and distributed those tickets earlier this week.
