Segra Park is Certified Sensory Inclusive 

COLUMBIA, SC – KultureCity has partnered with the Columbia Fireflies to make Segra Park and all of the programs and events that the venue hosts to be sensory inclusive. This new initiative will promote an accommodating and positive experience for all guests and fans with a sensory issue that visits Segra Park.

The certification process entailed the staff at Segra Park being trained by leading medical professionals on how to recognize those guests and fans with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Sensory bags, equipped with noise canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads will also be available to all guests at Segra Park who may feel overwhelmed by the environment.

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions (1 in 6 individuals). One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to over stimulation and noise, which is an enormous part of the environment in a venue like Segra Park. With its new certification, the Columbia Fireflies are now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible when attending any event at Segra Park.

Prior to attending an event, families can download the free KultureCity App where one can view what sensory features are available and where they can access them. Also, on the App is the Social Story which will provide a preview of what to expect while enjoying an event at Segra Park.

Fireflies to Host Free MLB Play Ball Clinic for Kids Age 4-18

COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Fireflies today announced that they will host Major League Baseball’s Play Ball Clinic run by Fireflies players and coaches at Segra Park Saturday, June 11 from 9 am to 11 am. The clinic is free for all kids ages 4-18. All kids wishing to participate in the Play Ball Clinic must register online in advance. The Play Ball Clinic is a part of MLB’s Play Ball Weekend initiatives that the Fireflies are taking part in June 10-12.

Once at Segra Park, the children will rotate between five different skills stations, where they will receive instructions from the Fireflies staff about how to improve their game. Fans can register for the Play Ball Clinic here.

The first 200 kids to register will receive a Franklin bat and ball set and a free reserved ticket for the game vs the Augusta GreenJackets at Segra Park that night, June 11, at 6:05 pm. The game will feature a post-game firework show. All members who participated in the clinic will be invited on-field pregame as recognition for their completion of the Play Ball Clinic.

Fireflies Launch Baseball Legends Creativity Contest

   

COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Fireflies announced today that they are launching a Baseball Legends Creativity Contest for children from kindergarten to 12th grade. The Baseball Legends Creativity Contest encourages children to learn more about local baseball legend Larry Doby and the impact he had on the game of baseball. Based on what they learned about Larry Doby, kids will then creatively express how Doby’s story has encouraged them to overcome challenges they may face in their own lives. Three contest winners, one from each age bracket, will be selected and recognized in-game during Negro League Weekend Friday, June 17.

The creative expression can take any form; including but not limited to essays, poems, spoken word, paintings or drawings. Submissions must answer the following prompt: “What challenges did Larry Doby face throughout his life and baseball career, how did he overcome those challenges, and how has he influenced you to overcome the challenges you may face in your life?”

Larry Doby is best-known for breaking the American League color barrier with the Cleveland Indians a few months after Jackie Robinson broke the National League color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Doby was also the second black manager of any Major League club, after Frank Robinson accomplished the task a few years before him.

If that weren’t enough trailblazing, Doby also broke the ABL color barrier. The ABL was a precursor to the NBA. Despite the hardships Doby was placed under, he became one of the most decorated baseball players of all time. He was the first black player to homer in the World Series. He became a seven-time MLB All-Star with five-100 RBI and eight-20 HR seasons, which helped prompt his spot in Cooperstown. The infielder was inducted in the MLB Hall of Fame in 1998, five years before his death.

Children participating will be broken into three groups based on grade level: Kindergarten – 5th grade, 6th grade – 8th grade, and 9th grade – 12th grade. One winner will be selected from each group.

Woodpeckers Establish Youth Baseball Team with Boys & Girls Club 

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. —The Fayetteville Woodpeckers have partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to establish a youth baseball team. The “Junior Woodpeckers” provide members of the Boys & Girls Club with the opportunity to participate in baseball. As a 12U team, the “Junior Woodpeckers” compete in the Fayetteville Parks and Recreation youth baseball league.

The Woodpeckers Foundation and Community Leaders Program donated $10,000 to the Boys and Girls Club to cover the costs of fees, uniforms and other expenses related to the baseball season. Uniforms include custom-made “Junior Woodpeckers” jerseys with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers logo on the sleeve. The purpose of the initiative is to provide children with the opportunity to compete in youth sports without financial barriers. The “Junior Woodpeckers” team is part of the Community Leaders Program, which supports youth sports and military initiatives in the Fayetteville area.

RiverDogs to Host Conclusion of Youth Baseball Game Interrupted by Gunfire

The Charleston RiverDogs will host the conclusion of a youth baseball game that was interrupted by gunfire on May 3, the team announced on Thursday. The incident occurred at North Charleston’s Pepperhill Park on Monday evening. The North Charleston Recreation Royals and Angels will play the remainder of the game at 5:00 p.m. and enjoy a special night at the ballpark following their game. The 15U softball team that was practicing in the park at the time of the incident will also take part in the evening. Later, the RiverDogs host the Fayetteville Woodpeckers at 7:05 p.m.

“As a huge supporter of youth baseball, we felt that is was our responsibility to do something for these children that might help them move on from this traumatic experience”, said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. “We have a tremendous opportunity, with what we do night in and night out, to help in difficult situations like these. Thankfully, with the help of the city of North Charleston and the North Charleston Recreation Department, we were able to put this special night together quickly.”

Major League Baseball is purchasing tickets to the game for all three youth teams, as well as hosting a post-game picnic for everyone involved. In addition, the Tampa Bay Rays are sending t-shirts and hats for the children. The Rays are the RiverDogs MLB affiliate.

“Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball were deeply saddened by the incident that took place Monday night and we are relieved that nobody was injured,” said Peter Woodfork, Major League Baseball’s Senior Vice President of Minor League Operations and Development. “We are pleased that these children and their families will have an opportunity to finish this game at Joseph Riley Park prior to the RiverDogs hosting the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Tuesday. We hope the experience at The Joe will be a small step towards helping those involved in that frightening incident.”

The gates to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park will open one hour earlier than normal (5:00 p.m.) to accommodate fans who are interested in supporting the teams. A ticket is required for entry to the ballpark and will be good for both the youth baseball game and the RiverDogs contest. The nine and ten-year-olds making up the Royals and Angels will play a game from 5:00-6:00 p.m. During the game, members of the RiverDogs and Woodpeckers will interact with the children in the dugout and on the field.

Following their game, the youth teams, will enjoy the picnic as the RiverDogs take the field for their contest. Each team member has been invited to bring two additional family members to the game and the RiverDogs are donating two tickets to every youth baseball and softball player in the North Charleston Recreation Department system. RiverDogs Director of Community Outreach, Chris Singleton, will speak to the children during the post-game picnic.

“The RiverDogs are a true community partner. Following the events of Monday night affecting three of our youth athletic teams, the RiverDogs were among the first to reach out to offer support to the young players and their families,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. “Playing at The Joe will be a much needed positive and joyful experience for our kids.”

Major Composting Effort Highlights Cannon Ballers Earth Day Initiatives

 

 (KANNAPOLIS, N.C.) – Expanding the team’s commitment to making Atrium Health Ballpark one of the “greenest” venues in Minor League Baseball, the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers have announced new composting efforts aimed at reducing gameday waste.

During each Cannon Ballers home game, fans will now see green composting receptacles located throughout the ballpark concourse. Although locations for trash and recycle still exist, the green bins provide an opportunity for fans to dispose of compostable items which will transform into nutrient-rich soil within a few months. Since their inaugural season, the team had already taken strides to ensure all food waste from kitchen preparations were properly composted.

Concessions at sporting events traditionally create massive amounts of waste each year. As a result, the Cannon Ballers set out to focus their efforts on utilizing more environmentally friendly products in all concession and food service areas. Partnering with Colorado-based Eco-Products, the team has migrated the majority of their food packaging to new items made out of compostable materials. Such items include food containers, beer and soda cups, straws and lids, utensils, napkins, and plastic bags. Along with any leftover food, all of these items can be diverted from landfills and redirected to composting facilities.

“We have been working diligently with all of our vendors to utilize as many compostable products as possible,” said Chris Beasley, Director of Food & Beverage at Atrium Health Ballpark. “Team leadership is deeply committed to a sustainable future and I am confident that our efforts will lead to long term impacts.”

Another key contributor to the Cannon Ballers initiative is locally based Crown Town Compost. Once items are properly placed in the composting receptacles, they are delivered to Crown Town’s Charlotte location for sorting and then redirected to their composting facility that creates soils, mulches, and other landscaping materials from the compost.

Over the course of the season, the team will be educating fans and building awareness on the impact of composting and why it is important for the environment. “Our goal is to educate the community while making it fun at the same time,” remarked Cannon Ballers General Manager Matt Millward. “We will be creating videos with our players that will be shown each night, as well as doing some interactive in-game promotions that bring awareness to what items are compostable.”

In addition to waste diversion, LED field lights and motion sensor lighting assist with energy conservation at Atrium Health Ballpark. The Cannon Ballers also have plans to further reduce their carbon footprint by focusing on strategies aimed at water conservation.

 

Segra Stadium To Host Inaugural ‘Jackie Robinson Showcase’ 

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville Woodpeckers *will host an inaugural “Jackie Robinson Showcase” on Thursday, May 5th at *Segra Stadium. The showcase will feature three high school baseball teams, including E.E. Smith, Westover and 71st High School. Game times are set for 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The showcase aligns with Minor League Baseball’s new initiative, “The Nine.” Launched in 2022, the initiative is a Black-community focused outreach platform specifically designed to honor and celebrate the historic impact numerous Black baseball pioneers made on the sport, provide new opportunities for youth baseball and softball participation, further diversify the business of baseball.

Named for the number Jackie Robinson wore during his only season playing in MiLB with the Triple-A Montreal Royals in 1946, The Nine will connect MiLB teams’ existing, Black-community focused development efforts with new national programming and future special events in a coordinated and centralized campaign. The new inclusion initiative follows MiLB’s Copa de la Diversión — the Latino fan engagement platform introduced in 2017 that included 76 MiLB teams in 2021.

Community-Focused Nights Added to Cannon Ballers Schedule

 

(KANNAPOLIS, N.C.) – Community initiatives have remained a core focus for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers and today the team announced a variety of additional highlights for the 2022 season.

This Saturday, April 23rd, the Ballers will host their inaugural HBCU Night at Atrium Health Ballpark. The night will highlight the impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and feature a live pregame performance by the Livingstone College Marching Blue Thunder. High school students will also have the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives from Johnson C. Smith University, Winston-Salem State University, and many others.

The Cannon Ballers also announced their first ever Pride Night taking place on Wednesday, July 6th. Celebrating inclusion and support for members of the LGBTQ+ community, Pride Night will include in-game programming highlighted by Salisbury Pride, as well as live performances from the Charlotte Pride Band, One Voice Chorus, and Courtney Lynn & Quinn. Merchandise featuring the team’s rainbow-colored logo will also be available in the Cannon City Supply Co. Team Store.

On Friday, August 26th, the Cannon Ballers will host Women in Sports Night at Atrium Health Ballpark. The night will welcome special guest appearances from female athletes, coaches, front office, and media members that have made a profound impact within the sports industry. On the following day, Saturday, August 27th, the team will host their 2nd annual Starry Night benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. As part of a special on-field postgame ceremony, the team, players, and all in attendance will light up the ballpark with colored lanterns in support of finding a cure for childhood brain tumors.

The 2022 season also features a variety of theme nights focused on additional community groups such as Boy Scout Night (June 10th), Girl Scout Night (July 22nd), and Faith Night (June 24th). Celebrating heroes who serve our communities throughout the year, the Cannon Ballers will be hosting a special Armed Forces Night (May 21st) and First Responders Night (August 9th).

Fireflies Seeking Stand Up To Cancer Warriors of the Inning Nominees

COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Fireflies today announced that they are searching for Cancer Warriors of the Inning to be honored during Stand Up To Cancer Night at Segra Park Thursday, May 19. The Fireflies will recognize local Cancer Warriors: those who are survivors, currently fighting or who have lost their lives to the fight against cancer.

Fans can nominate Cancer Warriors online by sharing their Warrior’s story. Nominations must be submitted by midnight Sunday, May 8. The Fireflies will be recognizing eight warriors during the game on Stand Up To Cancer Night. Each warrior who gets selected will receive two complimentary tickets to the Fireflies game May 19 vs the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at 7:05 pm.

The Fireflies return home April 19 to face-off against the Down East Wood Ducks for the first time in franchise history! The Blood Connection, Columbia Fireflies Partner to Increase Blood Donation in the Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Blood Connection and the Columbia Fireflies are proud to announce a new partnership in 2022 that will encourage blood donation in the Midlands and bring baseball fun to blood donors across the region. The Columbia Fireflies will now join the Lifesaver League – a group of minor league sports teams committed to serving their community through hosting blood drives and encouraging blood donation.

“We are proud to partner with The Blood Connection as part of the Lifesaver League to encourage Fireflies fans to help our local community by donating blood at one of the Blood Drives at the ballpark this summer,” said Ashlie DeCarlo, Director of Marketing for the Columbia Fireflies. “There is a critical need for blood donations right now and just one moment out of your day can help save a life.”

The Fireflies have called Columbia home for six years and were a perfect partner for The Blood Connection as the organization begins to service more hospitals in the Midlands region. The Blood Connection is the community blood center serving the Carolinas and Georgia, and supplies blood products to Prisma Health – Richland, MUSC Columbia, and Lexington Medical Center, along with more than forty others across South Carolina.

Segra Stadium Earns Sensory Inclusive Certification

The Fayetteville Woodpeckers will offer a sensory friendly environment at Segra Stadium beginning this season. The stadium earned sensory inclusive certification in February with 50% of the Woodpeckers front office completing a training through KultureCity, a national nonprofit that advocates for sensory needs. This new initiative will promote an accommodating experience for all guests and fans with a sensory condition.

The Woodpeckers Foundation supplied $1,000 to the initiative, which included the purchase of certification, five sensory bags and one weighted lap pad. Segra Stadium will have sensory bags available for check out at the guest services table behind section 125. Included in every sensory bag are headphones, fidget tools and verbal cue cards. Fans will also be able to check out a weighted lap pad for use.

17th annual 5K event takes place Saturday, May 28

 

After a two-year hiatus brought about by the pandemic, the Charleston RiverDogs “Run Charlie Run” 5K presented by Fleet Feet Sports will return to the Holy City and Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Registration is now open for the event which will take place on Saturday, May 28.

Runners can pre-register for one of the most unique race opportunities in the Lowcountry, featuring a 5K course that begins at the ballpark, continues through nearby Hampton Park and culminates with a home plate finish at The Joe. Registration to the event includes a race bib, a RiverDogs t-shirt, post-race beer, and a ticket to that evening’s game as the RiverDogs take on the Delmarva Shorebirds at Riley Park.

“We are thrilled to be hosting one of our favorite events again after a two-year break,” said RiverDogs Vice President/Corporate Sales Andy Lange. “When someone participates in our 5K, it is more than just a race. It’s an opportunity to host participants for a full day of fun at the ballpark.

Fans can pre-register for the event for just $40 until April 30. Beginning May 1, the registration fee increases to $50 and registering on the day of the race will cost $55.

Fireflies Launch New Volunteer Fundraising Opportunity

COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Fireflies today announced a new in-game volunteer program to help benefit local organizations seeking ways to fundraise. The Fireflies are looking for dedicated volunteers who are passionate about giving back to the community to join the Fireflies game day team. Organizations who participate in the Volunteer Fundraising Program will work alongside Fireflies staff members in a concession stand or in the SCU Kids Zone during Fireflies games to raise money for their organization, event or cause. Organizations eligible for the program include, but are not limited to, Parent Teacher Associations, Booster Clubs, Community Event Planning Committees, Rotary Clubs and other Non-Profit Organizations.

The Volunteer Fundraising Program requires each organization to provide a minimum of six (6) volunteers to work four (4) games during the upcoming 2022 season. After volunteers complete their four games of service, the Fireflies will donate $750 to their organization in recognition of their time. Should organizations have more than six volunteers, the Fireflies will donate an additional $125 for each volunteer who participates in the program.

“This program provides a unique opportunity for fans to see what it’s like to help make life-long memories at Segra Park from our Game Day worker’s perspective,” said Fireflies Team President, Brad Shank. “It is also a great way for us to give back to different non-profits and organizations in our community. We’re really excited to have a positive impact on a lot of different organizations in the Midlands through the launch of this volunteer program.”

Fireflies home games are primarily staffed by the Fireflies Game day Experience Team who help make a trip to Segra Park an unforgettable experience for hundreds of thousands of fans each year. Volunteers in the Volunteer Fundraising Program will work right alongside Game day Experience Team members. In concessions, volunteers will work in various locations throughout the ballpark running registers and assisting with food and order preparation. In the SCU Kids Zone, volunteers will assist with Kids Zone ticket sales and will work to ensure the safety of children on the inflatables.

The Fireflies 2022 season begins at Segra Park Friday, April 8 at 7:05 pm vs the Augusta GreenJackets (the Class-A Affiliate of the World Series Champion Atlanta Braves) and features a post-game firework show. Tickets for Opening Night, and all 2022 Fireflies home games, are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased online at FirefliesTickets.com, by calling the Fireflies Box Office at 803-726-4487 or by visiting the Fireflies Box Office in-person at Segra Park. Individual game ticket prices range from $5 to $12 and premium seating options are available starting at $14 per person. All tickets will be sold on a first come first serve basis and are based upon availability.

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: SRP Park and the Augusta GreenJackets are hosting a Gameday Job Fair on Thursday, March 24th from 5pm-8pm for seasonal positions for the Augusta GreenJackets 2022 baseball season and SRP Park Special Events.

Candidates must be 16 years of age to apply, must be able to pass a background check, and must be able to work all home games (April – Labor Day) and additional events as needed.
