Patriots Tropical Storm Ida Relief Fundraising Reaches $35,000

October 12, 2021

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots, the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, have announced that recent fundraising efforts by the team have raised $35,000 for Tropical Storm Ida relief in Central New Jersey.

The team collected $17,500 through an online auction and 50/50 raffles at the ballpark. That amount was then matched by the Kalafer family, Flemington Car & Truck Country Family of Brands, Clinton Honda, and Jaguar Land Rover Princeton.

“Patriots fans once again demonstrated why they are truly the best,” said Patriots Co-Chairman Jonathan Kalafer. “When our community needed them most, our fans showed up to support their neighbors and friends. Their generosity has inspired our family and our dealerships to do our part and match the fundraising total to assist in the recovery efforts.”

The online fundraising was done in partnership with MiLB Auctions and featured memorabilia, as well as experiences donated to the team. The top selling items included four tickets to see Hamilton on Broadway with a pre-show dinner at Bond 45 (donated by The Actors Fund), a Derek Jeter signed bat inscribed “HOF 2020” (donated by MLB), and a foursome at Trump National Golf Course Bedminster (donated by the Kalafer family).

Donations included items from the New York Giants, New York Knicks, and the New York Mets. Teams throughout the Double-A Northeast League sent autographed baseballs of their top prospects and recent alumni to help the cause.

“We want to thank everyone that donated items, and of course all the bidders, that made the auction such a success,” said Somerset’s President/General Manager Patrick McVerry. “Each of the teams and organizations that donated items did so on short notice with the understanding of the pressing need to get help to those affected by the floods. We would not have been able to raise these funds without them.”

The Patriots hosted 50/50 raffles at the final three home games of the season and collected money at the ballpark and online to add to the fundraising totals.

“The next steps will be to get the money to the non-profits that will do the most good for those affected in Central New Jersey,” said Patriots Co-Chairman Josh Kalafer. “It was important to our team, our family, and the dealerships, that the fundraising would be distributed locally and in a timely manner. Our community needed help, and we wanted to show that we are here for them.”

The Patriots are planning additional fundraising efforts to continue raising money for Tropical Storm Ida relief. More information will be made available in the coming weeks.

August 27, 2021

The Reading Fightin Phils are excited to host the Pennsylvania Little League World Series Team – Upper Providence 12U. The Fightins are so proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our fellow Pennsylvania Baseball team here at FirstEnergy Stadium on Tuesday, September 7th. The team showed amazing talent and sportsmanship on the biggest stage in Little League.

On Tuesday, September 7th the R-Phils take on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) at America’s Classic Ballpark. Before the 7:05 game, Upper Providence Little League will meet members of the Reading Fightin Phils, be introduced as our FirstEnergy Neighborhood Champion and head to the outfield for a pre-game catch. Then, every single player will be invited to throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the ballgame. The team will enjoy the night from the Reading Hospital Tower Health Pool Pavilion with their family and friends.

Upper Providence Little League, based in Oaks, PA, is an elite program that saw much success this summer. After becoming the 2021 PA State Champions, they advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Region Championship where only two teams from the region would make the Little League World Series. UPLL punched their ticket to Williamsport and went on to become the Mid-Atlantic Region Champions.

They were also PA Little League District 27 champs and PA Little League Section 8 champs which helped them advance into the tournament.

Fourteen Players and their Manager Ben Ludwig went on to travel to the Little League World Series. Fellow coaches Tom Sergio and Joe Schuberth also joined the team in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The team first matched up against Oregon where they fell 8-2. Aiden Ludwig began the scoring with an RBI single to bat in Jalen Bowman who doubled to reach. Bowman went on to take the mound taking down Oregon 1-2-3 in the first. After their opponents put up a three-run homer, Ludwig sent in another runner as Jack Strzeminski crossed the plate making it 3-2. Oregon put up a big five-run fourth and that’s where things remained for the rest of the game.

Upper Providence then faced off against Louisiana where they dropped 5-2. LA put up two in the first and another each in the second and third. But, UPLL was not done yet as Jalen Bowman tripled and was brought home on a Sam Buckley home run. Louisiana added one more to finish the game.

UPPL capped off the experience with a trip to the Little League Classic featuring the Los Angeles Angeles and Cleveland Indians. They got autographs from Shohei Ohtani and New Jersey native Mike Trout.

Reading is so excited to welcome Upper Providence 12U to America’s Classic Ballpark for a well-deserved congratulations and welcome home.

The National Negro League was founded in 1920 by Rube Foster and showcased the talents of Jackie Robinson, Satchell Paige, Josh Gibson and others.

Gibson, considered one of the greatest home run hitters, and most feared sluggers of any era, played in the Negro Leagues, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico leagues, but never played in the Major Leagues. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, the second ever Negro League player to be so honored.

Sean Gibson, Josh’s great grandson, will be in attendance and available for autographs and photos. Live music, a step show, drumming and vendor tables will also be part of the event. The first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative Negro League lanyard. Tickets are available by calling 860-246-GOAT (4628), by visiting online at www.yardgoatsbaseball.com, or in person at the Click It or Ticket Box Office at Dunkin’ Donuts Park.

“‘Negro Leagues Day’ is Hartford and Connecticut’s day to recognize the history, culture, education, and long overdue awareness of challenges and triumphs experienced by so many, including the legends like Josh Gibson, Hartford’s own, Johnny ‘Schoolboy Taylor’ and the first woman to play professional baseball full-time, Toni Stone,” said Executive Director of the Hartford Yard Goats Foundation Tiffany Young. “July 15th will mark a day of celebration through music, dance, art, and baseball for all to enjoy.”

Josh Gibson left an undeniable legacy, and to honor that legacy of achievement, the family established “The Josh Gibson Foundation” in 1994. The Josh Gibson Foundation has evolved into an organization dedicated to providing a variety of academic and athletic programs that allow the next Josh Gibson to reach his or her potential.

FIGHTIN CANCER NIGHT: Morandini Appearance & Bobble to Support Darren Daulton Foundation

June 28, 2021

(READING) – The Reading Fightin Phils are proud to stand up to fight cancer and support the Darren Daulton Foundation. Our annual Fightin Cancer night will be on Tuesday, July 27th. Former Philadelphia Phillie Mickey Morandini will meet fans and sign autographs, and there will be an exclusive bobblehead giveaway from his playing time here in Reading on behalf of the Darren Daulton Foundation.

The first 2,000 adults to enter FirstEnergy Stadium will receive the bobble thanks to Rick Stock Attorneys at Law. The R-Phils host the Somerset Patriots (Yankees) with the first pitch at 7:05 pm, gates open at 5:00pm.

Morandini will be in attendance in support of the Darren Daulton Foundation, whose mission is to provide financial support to families that are experiencing financial challenges due to treatment of a malignant primary brain tumor diagnosis.

Darren “Dutch” Daulton put up a strong fight against cancer and created this group to help others afflicted by the same disease. He was always known as a giving and loving family member, friend, and teammate. His memory lives on this way. Dutch and Mickey Mo were good friends and every year Morandini contributes to the foundation in his honor.

Mickey Morandini was drafted in the 5th round by Philadelphia back in 1988. Born and raised a Pennsylvanian, he played in 48 games in Reading the following year amassing 66 hits for a .351 batting average. Because of that summer, Mickey Mo was inducted into the Reading Baseball Hall of Fame in Baseballtown,He debuted in Philly during the end of the 1990 season and played in the big leagues for 10 years, where he was a member of the 1993 National League champion Phillies and 1995 All-Star team. Morandini spent part of 2015 as a coach in Reading before being called upon to be the first base coach out in Philadelphia.

Clubs don’t publicize all of their activity, so these stories represent a mere fraction of the contributions MiLB clubs make to their communities every year.
