Public Education Partners and Greenville Drive Announce My Drive to #Teach864 Campaign

 

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Public Education Partners (PEP) and the Greenville Drive announced today that they will continue their support of Greenville’s public school teachers through the My Drive to #Teach864 campaign. The annual #Teach864 Night between the two organizations is a celebration of teachers across all Greenville County Schools, and is one of the most highly anticipated events at Fluor Field each year.

However, Covid-19 and the cancellation of the Drive’s 2020 baseball season prevented the event from taking place in its usual format this year – but that’s not stopping the team from going to bat for teachers.

As school doors reopen, PEP and the Drive will be launching a two-week community fundraising effort – My Drive to #Teach864 – to support programming focused on teacher health and wellbeing, appreciation, and access to professional development for the 2020-21 school year. These programs represent one of PEP’s three strategic priorities – Elevating Teachers – which is focused on recruitment, retention, and morale initiatives that cultivate increased teacher satisfaction.

In celebration of PEP’s 35th anniversary and the Drive’s 15th anniversary, the organizations are committed to raising $35,000 from August 24th through September 7th by asking individuals to pledge $8.64 a month or make a one-time gift of $100, $50, or $25 in support of Greenville County’s teachers. Corporate sponsorships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 are also available in support of the campaign.

R-Phils Announce Rip It Fall High School Showcase 

 

The Reading Fightin Phils are proud to present their second Rip It Baseballtown Charities High School Showcase. All games will be played at the Double-A ballpark of the Philadelphia Phillies, FirstEnergy Stadium.

With the success of the first showcase, the R-Phils are happy to provide an opportunity to allow more kids to play baseball. Registration will benefit Baseballtown Charities.

There will be one game a night, played at 5:30 pm, starting Monday, August 24. Muhlenberg, Twin Valley, and Wilson are set to square off during the showcase.

Paul Davis Scholarship At Clinton Community College Announced

To honor his memory, friends and family have established a scholarship at Clinton Community College to honor him and his commitment to education and the community.

Paul Davis grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and attended Clinton Community College. An agent with the Iowa Bankers Association in Des Moines, he placed great value in education. He was a dedicated volunteer and champion for many causes in the community. His love of sports grew from being an athlete as a young kid, to coaching at all levels, especially the 20-plus seasons of coaching his children’s teams. He loved attending events with wife Kris, and supporting his family by cheering on any team they are part of.

Camanche High School Basketball Coach Josh Davis said this about his father, “Dad was a great example on how to serve others. It was great to have him involved with our basketball program in Camanche. Most of the things I do as a coach, I learned from watching him when I was a kid. This scholarship will be a great way to honor his memory.”

Paul was an official with the Iowa High School Boys and Girls Athletic Associations, as well as the NAIA and NCAA college associations. He served on a variety of foundations including Riverboat Days, Clinton Junior Baseball, local volleyball organizations, and was Past President of the Clinton LumberKings Baseball Club.

Clinton LumberKings General Manager Ted Tornow commented, “Paul valued education and learning. He was always looking for ways to improve not only himself, but others. He touched many lives in this community and this scholarship is a testament to a life well-lived. Many future students will benefit from this and I know that Paul would be very happy to know that.”

The Paul Davis Memorial Scholarship, an annual $500 scholarship through the Paul B. Sharar Foundation for Clinton Community College, will be awarded to a CCC student who makes a difference. The student must demonstrate a commitment to their education and to the community through hard work and active volunteerism. Paul Davis believed that everyone in the community could come together to make this a great place. He valued hard work, and also appreciated the lessons that extracurricular activities could provide.

Cutters & SCI Launch “My Best Summer Read” Contest

 

The Williamsport Crosscutters have teamed up with Susquehanna Computer Innovations of South Williamsport to offer area students a chance to win a new laptop computer system with the “My Best Summer Read” Contest.

“We are grateful to Susquehanna Computer Innovations and their owner Tim Heitzman, for teaming up with us for this special program,” stated Gabe Sinicropi, the Cutters Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations. “SCI has been a long-time partner in our Grand Slam Reading Program which was suspended this year due to schools closing in the spring. Despite that, the Cutters and SCI both agreed that we still wanted to offer something to area students.”

The contest is open to all area students age 14 and under. To enter, parents are required to send an email entry with a photo of their child holding a favorite book that they read this summer. Along with the photo, the email entry should contain the child’s name, age, the book title and author along with what they liked most about the book (in 50 words or less). All entries are to be submitted via email no later than September 7 to [email protected].

All valid entrants will receive a certificate for a free ticket to a Williamsport Crosscutters game of their choice in 2021. The winning entry will be determined via a random drawing of all valid entries. The drawing, done by Boomer, the Cutters mascot, will take place live on the Williamsport Crosscutters Facebook page September 8 at 7pm.

Blue Wahoos Help Recognize Two Area Scholarship Winners In MiLB Rising Stars Program 

 

A partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida enabled the Blue Wahoos to help celebrate national recognition for two area high school graduates.

Dashawn Appleberry from Rocky Bayou Christian School in Niceville, along with Rhett Hardy from Pine Forest High School, were both recipients of Rising Star Student awards for $500 through a scholarship program with Minor League Baseball and the national Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.

They were among 20 winners nationwide in a program MILB Charities founded in 2016 for deserving BBBS student enrollees in Minor League Baseball communities across the nation. A partnership began in 2004 with the national Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and Minor League Baseball.

“Think of this, there are 162 teams (in MiLB) and there are 20 scholarships,” said Blue Wahoos owner Quint Studer, who participated in a Zoom conference call Monday to honor the two area seniors. “So that means one out of every eight teams could possibly get somebody to be named a winner and we have two.

“On behalf of the Blue Wahoos, we would like to thank Minor League Baseball…we’re just carrying a message. It is wonderful testimony to the quality of applicants we have right here (in Northwest Florida).”

Appleberry, whose family moved to the area from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina’s wrath in 2005, will be the first from his family to attend college. He will begin classes later this month at Florida State where he will major in Computer Science.

He graduated with a 3.85 cumulative grade point average. He has been mentored by his Big Brother Richard for the past 10 years.

Hardy, who was a member of the Pine Forest baseball team, attained a 4.87 GPA and will attend the University of Florida where he will major in Biomedical Engineering. He has spent three years with his Big Brother mentor, shadowing him once a month in a School To Work program at Navy Federal Credit Union.

“They both blew it out of the park, no pun intended, to apply for this scholarship,” said Dana Hall, director of development for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. “We are so excited they were selected. This is going to help them kick-start their next adventure.”

Appleberry and Hardy are classified as “Littles” in the BBBS program. Their mentors are business employees in the community and classified as “Bigs”.

“We have done several events with the Blue Wahoos…recruitment events, spirit nights, a Big/Little first pitch,” Hall said. “We have been incredible partners with Blue Wahoos.

“So when this opportunity came out from our national office, we really wanted to encourage all of our Big Brothers to get with their Little Big Brother/Sister and apply for this scholarship.”

The MILB partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters included scholarship stipends to graduating seniors who start college this fall semester. The application process included either a written essay submitted online or a video presentation of qualifications.

“I’m very grateful I was one of the few who got picked,” said Appleberry during the Zoom video conference.

“I want to thank everybody who helped get me this scholarship,” said Hardy, who was a member of the National Honor Society at Pine Forest.

Hall thanked Studer and the Blue Wahoos for all the support the team has provided during the nine years of the franchise. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year as part of the national organization.

“Quint is a huge advocate of not only our mission, but just mentoring in general,” Hall said. “The Pensacola Blue Wahoos have done so many things in our community. Even with the pandemic going on, they have gone above and beyond with just giving us a little sense of normalcy and still bringing the community together.”

Senior Spotlight Series Rolls On At Canal Park With Two Midweek Senior Night Games August 4th & 6th

 

(AKRON, OHIO) July 31, 2020 – The Akron RubberDucks are thrilled to host two more games in this summer’s socially-distant Senior Spotlight Series at Canal Park featuring teams from all over Northeast Ohio. On August 4th the Brunswick Blue Devils will square off with the seniors from Highland and Barberton high schools, while on August 6th Cuyahoga Falls and Woodridge will take a trip down Route 8 to face off one more time at Canal Park.

Each game will be a traditional seven-inning exhibition with gates opening to fans at 5:00 p.m. and first pitch at 6:05 p.m. at the home of the Akron RubberDucks. Both games will be broadcast live on the radio at 640 WHLO, the new home for Akron RubberDucks baseball, beginning at 6 p.m. These games mark the sixth and seventh Senior Spotlight games to be held at Canal Park this summer.

These games will offer student-athletes from the class of 2020 a way to celebrate Senior Night together after the high school spring sports season was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak. This senior night will certainly be memorable as players will have their pictures on the video board and pregame celebrations will commemorate the occasion.

“This obviously isn’t the way these student-athletes envisioned their senior seasons playing out, but we are excited to offer them one last opportunity to take the field wearing their school’s colors,” said RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander, “This summer we have made sure to safely offer this opportunity to our community and we are so excited to celebrate these student-athletes in their final game. “

“Knights Care 4 CLT” Raised Over $125,000 

 

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) — The Charlotte Knights are pleased to announce that the team’s “Knights Care 4 CLT” initiative, which was launched back on April 15, has raised over $125,000 and the team will now disperse the funds to those affected by COVID-19. With help from a $75,000 donation from naming rights partner, Truist, and additional contributions from Charlotte Knights Charities, sponsors and fans, the team will donate those funds to healthcare workers, seven local-area charities, and Knights’ employees (part-time, game-day, and full-time) who are in need.

“As this pandemic continues to affect so many in our community, we are very pleased to begin dispersing these much-needed funds to those who need some help,” stated Dan Rajkowski, Charlotte Knights Chief Operating Officer. “We are so thankful to Truist, as well as our generous partners and fans who helped us raise these funds for those in need. Baseball has a way of bringing communities together and we hope that we are able to help those in the community who have been affected by this difficult time in our nation’s history.”

In addition to the funds dispersed to Knights’ displaced employees due to COVID-19 from the cancellation of the 2020 season, the team is also contributing $15,000 from the “Knights Care 4 CLT” fund to Atrium Health, one of the team’s founding partners.

Rajkowski added, “In the face of this pandemic, our healthcare workers rose to the challenge and continued to care for our community in this time of need. As a part of our Knights Care 4 CLT campaign, we are very pleased to donate a portion of the funds to the Atrium Health Essential Needs Fund, addressing PPE and supply shortages.”

“It’s generous support from community partners like the Charlotte Knights that continues to enhance Atrium Health’s efforts to fulfill its mission of providing the best care to all during the current pandemic,” said Armando Chardiet, President of Atrium Health Foundation. “The Charlotte Knights organization has been a close friend of the Foundation since 2002, and we are extremely grateful for their recent $15,000 contribution to the Atrium Health Essential Needs Fund.”

As part of this initiative, the Knights have selected seven local Charlotte area nonprofits who were in need of some extra funding during these unprecedented times. Organizations receiving the allocated funds — a total of $40,000 — include Bright Blessings, Care Ring, Classroom Central, Promising Pages, Roof Above, Second Harvest Food Bank and A Child’s Place | Thompson Child & Family Focus. As part of the financial donations to these organizations, members of the team’s front office staff will also volunteer their time from August 3-10 during the club’s annual “Week of Giving” presented by Truist. Fox Valley High School Senior All-Star Games at Neuroscience Group Field on August 2

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The area’s best high school seniors will take part in a series of All-Star games at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Sunday, August 2 presented by Fox Communities Credit Union. An All-Day, General Admission pass will be available for $5 and fans will be asked to socially distance within the stadium to see live baseball.

The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00pm with Team Cardinal taking on Team Black. A second game to follow at 3:30pm with Team White against Team Gray. The winning teams from the first two games will play a third game at 6:00pm. Rosters of the teams are at the end of this release.

The parking lot will open at 11:00am with free parking. Neuroscience Group Field will open at noon. There will be concessions available during the games.

Each game will be a nine-inning exhibition with gates opening to fans at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch at 7:05 p.m. at the home of the Akron RubberDucks.

Despite the high school spring sports season being cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, each team will be able to celebrate Senior Night in a memorable way as players will have their pictures on the video board and pregame celebrations will commemorate the occasion.

Salem Red Sox to host senior baseball game featuring 63 players from 21 local high schools on August 1st

SALEM, Va. – On Saturday, August 1st, Salem Memorial Ballpark will open its’ gates to welcome 63 local high school senior baseball players along with their friends and family during The Last Inning. Comprised of 4 teams, sponsored by Coke, American National Bank, Kroger, & Guelich Capital Management, The Last Inning features players from 21 local area high schools.

“This game means a lot to me, being able to play with the other seniors in the valley one last time is going to be exciting,” said North Cross Senior, Nick Carey. “I am so thankful for everyone that organized this event. Not getting to play my senior year was very disappointing but this game is giving all of the seniors a chance to play that final game and have closure on our high school baseball career.”

Gates will open at 1:30p with Game 1 starting at 3p. “Senior Day” player recognition will occur in between games, with Game 2 beginning at 6:30p. The evening’s event will conclude with post-game fireworks. Players will receive the full-game experience with announcements, head shots, and jerseys provided by the Salem Red Sox.

“I personally have so many friends involved in this event. From coaches to parents of the seniors, each are super excited to have the opportunity to play in the game with their teammates and on Salem Memorial Field,” said Gary Walthall, retired William Byrd High School, Athletic Director. “The players are thankful for the chance to play and excited to see their friends again.”

Admission is free and concessions will be available for purchase. No outside food or beverage will be permitted. All social distancing guidelines and CDC recommendations will be followed. Masks are encouraged.

“We wanted to make the most of an unfortunate situation and hope to replicate their Senior Day while giving them one last game to play together,” said General Manager, Allen Lawrence. “Our staff is excited to be a part of this memorable event and we encourage the community to join as we applaud their hard work.”

Senior Spotlight To Feature Hudson And Stow-Munroe Falls/Kent Roosevelt At Canal Park July 25

 

(AKRON, OHIO) July 20, 2020 – Canal Park will once again play host to another night of celebration for the Class of 2020 as the Hudson Explorers will take on a combined team from Kent Roosevelt and Stow-Munroe Falls High Schools on July 25. This third installment of Senior Night features a Suburban League rivalry matchup with first pitch of the nine-inning game set for 7:05 p.m. at the home of the Akron RubberDucks.

Due to the high school baseball season being cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, each team will be able to celebrate Senior Night in a memorable way as players will have their pictures on the video board and pregame celebrations will commemorate the occasion. Post-game fireworks for this event will begin shortly after the conclusion of this game.

“Seeing these student-athletes and coaches have one more opportunity to play together this year has been incredible, and we can’t wait to see our community come together again in this special celebration for the Class of 2020,” said RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander, “Safety at Canal Park is our highest priority so that we can offer our community another memorable evening for the student-athletes and their families. “

The Akron RubberDucks will continue to follow all social distancing protocols as outlined by Gov. DeWine, Mayor Horrigan, and state and local health officials. The attendance for this event will be limited to 1,000 fans at Canal Park, socially distanced within the seating bowl.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes to provide final opportunity for high school seniors to PLAY BALL

 

KEIZER, OR. — 108 High School seniors, representing 48 different schools from across the State of Oregon, will be converging on Volcanoes Stadium the weekend of July 31, August 1, and August 2 – to play baseball!

“One of the most cherished events in High School baseball is Senior Day at the field. It’s usually the last home game of the season and provides a final recognition for the Senior players and their parents who have supported their efforts for so many years,” said Mickey Walker, CEO for the Volcanoes. “Covid-19 destroyed this emotional opportunity, along with all High School games, this year. We wanted to do something for the Seniors and providing them an opportunity to take the field again seemed to be the Perfect scenario,” concluded Walker.

“We feel a special attachment to High School players as we have hosted the OSAA State Baseball Championships, Spring Break Baseball Tournaments and Futures Game for many years at Volcanoes Stadium,” said Jerry Howard, the Senior Market Representative for the Volcanoes. “This is an opportunity to bid them farewell in an appropriate manner.”

The 108 players have been divided into 8 teams and each will play 2 games over the course of the weekend. Game times will be 4pm and 7pm on Friday, July 31. 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm on Saturday, August 1 and 11am and 2pm on Sunday, August 2nd.

Social distancing and Covid-19 protocols will be followed including limiting the number in attendance at each game.
