Spear Presented with Troubh Community Service Award

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs are proud to announce that the 2017 recipient of the William Troubh Community Service award is Howard Spear. Spear was presented the award by Sea Dogs’ President Charlie Eshbach and members of Mr. Troubh’s family including wife Nancy in a pre-game ceremony at Hadlock Field on Sunday, May 7th when the Sea Dogs hosted the Reading Fightin Phils.

The “William Troubh Community Service Award” was established in 2015 to honor a local citizen who is making a positive impact within the city of Portland. Mr. Troubh was a lifelong resident of the city of Portland who dedicated his life to making Portland a great place to live and work. He served multiple terms on the Portland City Council and was Mayor of the city in 1974 and 1975 and again in 1983 and 1984. Mr. Troubh was instrumental in bringing the Portland Sea Dogs to the city in 1994. He also played a major role in the development of the Portland Waterfront, Cumberland County Civic Center and the Portland Ice Arena, now named in his honor. His contributions will be enjoyed by residents and visitors of the city for generations to come.

Howard Spear has served as the co-race director of the Sea Dogs’ Mother’s Day 5K road race for 17 years and for the eight-year run of the Father’s Day 5K. The races have helped raise more than $300,000 for local charities to fight breast cancer and prostate cancer. Spear also served as race director of the Maine Marathon for 18 years, retiring this past October. During his time the race raised more than $4 million for local children’s charities and also accentuated healthy living. He is a longtime member of the Maine Track Club Board of Directors and longtime volunteer at many other community events.

“Spear truly exemplifies what Mr. Troubh tried to achieve by making Portland a great place to live and work,” stated Sea Dogs Executive Vice President and General Manager Geoff Iacuessa. “It is an honor to present the 2017 William Troubh Community Service Award to Howard Spear.”

Past recipients of the award include Roger Goodoak, the Executive Director of the Maine Homeless Veteran’s Alliance in 2016 and John Menario in 2015.

Sea Dogs Partner with Movers for Moms®

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs have partnered with Movers for Moms® to help moms in need this Mother’s Day.

Movers for Moms® collects essential care and pampering items for women staying in domestic violence shelters. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Portland is collecting items for delivery to Family Crisis Services. Family Crisis Services is a 16-bed emergency shelter and domestic violence resource center.

Fans attending Sea Dogs games on May 8th, May 9th, and May 10th are asked to bring items to the ballpark to be donated to the campaign.

Sea Dogs Community Week March 6th-10th

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs have designated the week of March 6th-10th as Sea Dogs Community Week. Throughout the week, the Sea Dogs will donate a portion of the ticket sales to local non-profit organizations.

The Sea Dogs have teamed-up with five local non-profit organizations for the week. Each day throughout the week will benefit one of the five non-profit organizations. The Sea Dogs will be donating $3.00 from every ticket sold to that day’s selected non-profit organization.

Tickets can be purchased at the Hadlock Field ticket office, by phone at 207-879-9500, or online at www.seadogs.com. Individual tickets, group tickets, and new season tickets are all eligible as part of the offer, but must be paid in full that day.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our fans to get tickets and support a local charity at the same time,” stated Sea Dogs Executive Vice President & General Manager Geoff Iacuessa. “The Sea Dogs are committed to being an integral part of the community and are happy to give back to those organizations that do so much to help the communities in which we live.”

Sea Dogs Now Accepting Nominations for William Troubh Community Service Award

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs are now accepting nominations for the “William Troubh Community Service Award.” The award recognizes a local citizen who is making a positive impact within the city of Portland. It may be a public employee or private citizen who, through their efforts, makes Portland a great city to live and or work in.

The Sea Dogs established the award to honor Mr. Troubh in April of 2014. Mr. Troubh was a lifelong resident of the city of Portland, who dedicated his life to making Portland a great place to live and work. He served multiple terms on the Portland City Council and was Mayor of the city in 1974 and 1975 and again in 1983 and 1984. Troubh was instrumental in bringing the Portland Sea Dogs to the city in 1994. He also played a major role in the development of the Portland Waterfront, Cumberland County Civic Center and the Portland Ice Arena, now named in his honor. His contributions will be enjoyed by residents and visitors of the city for generations to come.

Additionally, Mr. Troubh was a passionate baseball fan. He stayed involved after his key role in helping to bring the Sea Dogs to Portland, serving as the team’s legal counsel and served six years as President of the Eastern League from 1997 through 2002. On most summer nights Troubh could be found at Hadlock Field enjoying a Sea Dogs game with family and friends. He was inducted into the Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2010.

Sea Dogs to Hold Food Drive

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs, in partnership with Maine’s Credit Unions, will hold their 17th annual Food Drive which will run from Monday, January 23rd through Friday, February 3rd. All the collected food items will be donated to the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

As in the past, this year’s food drive will be “Buy One, Bring One, Get One.” For every ticket purchased and every donated food item you bring, you will receive a free Sea Dogs ticket to the same game. For example, if you buy three tickets to the June 18th game and bring in three food items, you will receive three additional complimentary tickets of equal or lesser value to the June 18th game. The offer is good for Box Seats, Reserved, General Admission, and Pavilion seating; subject to availability.

Fans may take advantage of this offer by bringing their non-perishable food items to the Hadlock Field Box Office. The Sea Dogs Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

“In addition to raising funds for Ending Hunger, through the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, Maine’s credit unions are committed to raising awareness and supporting ending hunger efforts in a variety of other ways. We are pleased to again partner with the Sea Dogs to help make this happen. Since 1990, Maine’s credit unions have raised more than $7 million to help end hunger in Maine, but hunger remains a significant issue in the state, and we are committed to doing all that we can to help,” said John Murphy, President of the Maine CU League.

Pedal to the Park on Sundays

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs have announced a new partnership with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine to encourage fans to Pedal to the Park on Sunday afternoons. The Coalition will be offering its free Valet Bike Parking service.

The Valet Bike Parking service will be offered at all Sunday Portland Sea Dogs home games in 2016 (excluding the July 3rd night game). Valet Bike Parking is FREE to use, secure, quick, and the best way to get to the game. The Valet Bike Parking area will be located at the ballpark entrance at Hadlock Field on Park Avenue and will be open from 11:30am-4:30pm for Sunday home games.

“We are proud to partner with the Portland Sea Dogs to offer our FREE Valet Bike Parking service. Hadlock Field is an extremely bike friendly location, and we’re excited to to reduce traffic and parking congestion, while providing fans with a great way to get to the game,” stated Nancy Grant, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.

Volunteers from the Bicycle Coalition of Maine will greet fans who ride their bikes to the game on Sundays. Each rider will complete a sign-in sheet with their contact information and will be given a wristband that matches the one placed on their bike. After having a great time at the game, show your wristband to the attendant and you’ll get your bike back just as you left it. Afterwards ride off into the sunset past everyone waiting in vehicular traffic.

For fans who are unable to bike all the way from their home, the Coalition has provided maps highlighting satellite parking areas and the best routes to the ballpark from around the Portland area.

Capacity Field Expected for Mother’s Day 5K

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Track Club and Intermed, will be hosting the 15th annual Mother’s Day 5K Road Race on Sunday, May 10th at 9:15am. Proceeds from the event will benefit Maine breast cancer patients and research with the funds being split between the Cancer Community Center and the Maine Cancer Foundation. There will also be a Kid’s Run, presented by Maine Running, beginning at 8:30am that is free of charge.

The Portland Sea Dogs Mother’s Day 5K is the largest 5K road race in the State of Maine. It is also the second largest road race in the state, only the Beach to Beacon is larger. A capped field of 3,000 runners is once again expected for this year’s race.

In the previous 14 years of the event, the Sea Dogs have been able to donate over $189,507.00 to support breast cancer research and patients in Maine including $20,000.00 from last year’s race.

All bags entering Hadlock Field will be inspected. The Sea Dogs highly recommend that people leave their bags at home or in the car. The Sea Dogs appreciate your patience and understanding.

Slugger and his Mom lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates with a unique finish inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout. The course is USAT&F certified and is part of the USAT&F Sanctioned Grand Prix series.

The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2015 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2015 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will also be presented with awards. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary ticket to attend a future Sea Dogs game.

The race is open to the public. Walkers and wheelchair racers are welcome as well. A limited number of spots are still available. Registration is $20.00. The kid’s race is free. If you would like to run in the 15th annual Sea Dogs’ Mother’s Day 5K you may register online at www.seadogs.com or at Fleet Feet Maine Running located on Marginal Way in Portland on Friday, May 8th from Noon to 6:00 PM or Saturday, May 9th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Additionally, if spots remain, runners may register the day of the race at Hadlock Field from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM.

Runners who have already registered may also pick-up their packets at Fleet Feet Maine Running during the same hours as above.

Road Closures:
Park Avenue from Weymouth Street to Saint John Street will be closed to traffic from 8:50 AM to 9:15 AM on Sunday, May 10th.

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will be hosting a College Fair at Hadlock Field from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 29th prior to that evening’s Sea Dogs game scheduled for 6:00 PM against the Binghamton Mets. More than 60 colleges are expected to participate in the seventh annual event.

The Sea Dogs College Fair, presented by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, provides students with the unique opportunity to gather information from colleges as well as meet with college admissions counselors in a social setting at a Sea Dogs baseball game.

All students interested in attending the College Fair must have a game ticket for the April 29th Sea Dogs game against the Binghamton Mets. Students are eligible to receive two free tickets to the game; additional tickets can be purchased at the discounted rate of $5.00. Students looking to receive their two free tickets to attend the game and the college fair should contact the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500.

A $500.00 scholarship, presented by the Sea Dogs will be awarded randomly to one lucky student. The scholarship will be given away during the middle of the fifth inning of that evening’s Sea Dogs game. Students must be present to win.

Each college will have a table set up in the Hadlock Field concourse. Some of the colleges scheduled to participate include Columbia College Chicago, Seton Hall University, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, University of Southern Maine, and Wheaton College. Sea Dogs to Host Autism Awareness Day on April 11

Portland-Sea-DogsThe Portland Sea Dogs in partnership with Embracing the World of Autism will host Autism Awareness Day at Hadlock Field on Saturday, April 11th when the Sea Dogs take on the Reading Fightin Phils at 1:00 PM.

The event will be held with the support of University of New England Occupational Therapy graduate students. The UNE students will create and facilitate activities for children and families in a special “Sensory Room” that will allow children with autism to self-regulate using movement, calming sensory input and fidget items. This allows children to fully participate in the Sea Dogs game.

Autism-Awareness-LogoIn addition to the “Sensory Room,” the students will also make sensory kits that include tactile items, chewy food, and fidget items to help people with autism self-modulate their nervous system during the game.

Donald Frost, 13, a child with Asperger’s syndrome, will be singing the National Anthem prior to the start of the game. Representatives will also throw out the ceremonial first-pitch and serve as a junior public address announcer.

The goal of the event is to raise autism awareness and to help people with autism perform the occupations of everyday life.

Sea Dogs, U.S. Cellular to Give Local Youth Field a Makeover

Portland-Sea-DogsThe Portland Sea Dogs and U.S. Cellular have teamed up to give a Maine youth baseball or softball field a complete makeover for the 2015 season. Registrations for the contest open today and run through Friday, March 20th. One entry will be randomly selected for the makeover. The winning field must be located in the state of Maine to be eligible.

“This is a project that is truly important to both us and U.S. Cellular,” Sea Dogs EVP/GM Geoff Iacuessa stated. “We understand budgets are very tight for youth sports and we want to pitch in and revitalize a field.”

The makeover will consist of field cleanup, turf cutting, infield mix and leveling, and more depending on the need of the winning field. The work will be done by Sea Dogs’ head groundskeeper Rick Anderson, his crew, Sea Dogs front office staff, and U.S. Cellular staff.

“U.S. Cellular has long enjoyed its partnership with the Portland Sea Dogs and the opportunity it gives us to connect with Maine residents,” states Matt Kasper, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England. “We are looking forward to rolling up our sleeves to help with the baseball or softball field makeover and helping one lucky winner obtain their field of dreams. Every young child should have the opportunity to play ball on a safe, well-maintained field.”

Sea Dogs Now Accepting Nominations for William Troubh Community Service Award

It may be a public employee or private citizen who, through their efforts, makes Portland a great city to live and/or work in.

The Sea Dogs announced the creation of the award in a pre-game ceremony at the teams’ 2014 home opener, where the Sea Dogs paid tribute to Mr. Troubh after his passing in November. As part of the tribute, the Sea Dogs also renamed one of the Hadlock Field sky boxes in Troubh’s honor.

Dunkin’ Donuts to Host Free Baseball Clinic for Kids

Portland-Sea-DogsThe Portland Sea Dogs have partnered with Dunkin’ Donuts to host a free baseball clinic for kids 16 and under at Hadlock Field on Saturday, June 21st from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon.

Portland Sea Dogs’ players will be on hand to teach the basic fundamentals of baseball including hitting, pitching, outfielding, and infielding. Kids will also have the opportunity to get autographs from the players taking part in the clinic.

The clinic is open to children 16 years old and younger. Kids participating must be comfortable being on the field without a parent. Parents are welcome to watch the clinic from the stands. The clinic is also dependant on weather and field conditions.

The clinic is free but pre-registration is required. Parents may register their children at www.seadogs.com. Registration is open to the first 100 kids. Kids participating must be comfortable going on the field without a parent.  Register Now

Kids participating in the clinic should arrive at Hadlock Field by 9:45 AM and meet at the Slugger statue. Kids should provide their own glove. All other equipment will be provided.

The Sea Dogs will host another free baseball clinic at Hadlock Field on Saturday, July 5th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.  Register Now

Sea Dogs to Host Equipment Drive June 6-8

Donate New or Used Baseball/ Softball Equipment to Baseball Miracles

Portland-Sea-DogsThe Portland Sea Dogs, in conjunction with Baseball Miracles, are pleased to announce a Baseball/Softball Equipment Drive at Hadlock Field from June 6th – 8th when the Sea Dogs host the Bowie Baysox. Fans are encouraged to bring new or old baseball equipment to the ballpark to be donated to children who are faced with economical or environmental disadvantages.

The Sea Dogs will accept all types of baseball and softball equipment including gloves, bats, catcher’s gear, bases, baseballs, softballs, wiffle balls and bats, which will be all donated to Baseball Miracles.

Baseball-MiraclesA non-profit organization, Baseball Miracles is a team of baseball and softball instructors, founded by Hall of Fame scout John Tumminia, who have joined together to teach boys and girls with economic and environmental disadvantages throughout the world. Sea Dogs’ pitcher Mike McCarthy is the driving force behind bringing this initiative to Hadlock Field.

“I believe baseball is about more than just playing a game. It is indicative of life in many ways and is a fundamental part of development for youth in communities around the world,” said McCarthy. “Baseball Miracles is a great opportunity for anyone who has benefited from the game of baseball to give back. From the casual weekend fan to the die-hard memorabilia collector, we are all able to help underprivileged youth around the world benefit from the life lessons that baseball has to offer.”

The Portland Sea Dogs return home on Tuesday, June 3rd and open up a six game homestand through Sunday, June 8th. The equipment drive will begin before the Sea Dogs game against the Bowie Baysox (Orioles affiliate) Friday at 7 p.m. and will run until the end of the game Sunday.

Any equipment fans bring for the drive should be brought into the ballpark and dropped off at the Baseball Miracles box at Guest Services in the concourse at Hadlock Field. For more information on the drive, please visit www.seadogs.com or www.baseballmiracles.org.

Sea Dogs to Help Strikeout Lou Gehrig’s Disease on May 20

Portland-Sea-DogsNearly 75 years ago, on July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig stood on the field at Yankee Stadium and announced to the world that “today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth.” While he lost his life to ALS two years later and since that time ALS has become known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the Northern New England Chapter of The ALS Association continues his brave fight to find a cause and treatment for ALS.

On May 20, the Portland Sea Dogs will pay tribute to Lou Gehrig and those who are living with ALS today in partnership with the Northern New England Chapter. Join them as they help raise awareness of Lou Gehrig’s Disease and the National ALS Registry, a research project that may help scientists find the cause, treatment and cure for the disease, which is fatal in an average of just two to five years.

ALS-logo2The first 500 fans entering the ballpark will receive camouflage colored ALS Registry foam baseballs. On game day, the Sea Dogs also will honor the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s famous speech with a number of activities as we aim to Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
