Blue Wahoos Donate Team Bus To Dixon School Of Arts And Sciences

The Blue Wahoos team bus will soon be seen on the streets of Pensacola again.

On Tuesday morning, Kazoo took one last drive in his trusty bus, taking it from the stadium to the nearby Dixon School of Arts and Sciences in downtown Pensacola to be officially donated to the school.

Since 2008, the K-8 charter school has provided for at-risk youth in Pensacola, fostering creativity through a curriculum centered on a world class fine arts program and science, technology, and math. Providing transportation for their students, both to and from school and to the host of nationwide academic competitions their students compete in, was a critical need for the school.

“What an honor and privilege it was to be able to present our Blue Wahoos bus to the students and faculty of Dixon Arts and Sciences this morning,” Blue Wahoos vice president of operations Donna Kirby said. “Our hope is that Dixon will be able to use this bus to help build on their exciting curriculum. Kazoo really loved all of the hugs and high fives that the students gave him, too!”

The school’s president, Dr. Donna Curry, and students from all grades met Kazoo and the Blue Wahoos outside the school and offered a tour of the grounds, showing off the art projects, dance studio, and music hall that help students positively deal with trauma through expressing creativity.

“We were so impressed to see the extraordinary and magnificent artwork that the students have created.” Kirby said. “There is no doubt in my mind that we are going to see that talent on display in museum and art galleries at some point in the near future!”

The Blue Wahoos selected the Dixon School of Arts and Sciences to receive the bus through a social media campaign to find a new home for the bus.

“We received entries from so many worthwhile local non-profits doing great work in our community. We wish we had a bus to give to each, as Pensacola has a tremendous community of charitable organizations helping make this city great,” Kirby said. “We were proud to select the Dixon School because their mission as a school aligns closely with ours as a ballclub, and the Studer Family of Companies has a strong focus on early learning and improving educational outcomes.”

The mission of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos is to improve the quality of life for citizens of Pensacola and make it the best place to live in the world. In their seven years in the Southern League, the team has won the league’s Community Service Award four times, including in each of the past three seasons consecutively.

Jumbo Shrimp initiate A Better Jacksonville Series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jumbo Shrimp are continuing their commitment to serving the city of Jacksonville and its surrounding areas by introducing the club’s new A Better Jacksonville Series. Fans who donate to each of these monthly charitable drives will be entered into a drawing to throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the Jumbo Shrimp’s 6:35 p.m. game on Sunday, August 25 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Jumbo Shrimp’s A Better Jacksonville Series begins on Friday, April 26 with a greeting card donation drive. During this 7:05 p.m. game on Military Appreciation Night, the club will use donated greeting cards by allowing fans to write to active military.

The Jumbo Shrimp will team with the Jackson Five, the club’s internship program with Andrew Jackson High School, on Monday, May 20 to hold an Education Day Shoe Drive prior to the club’s 11:05 a.m. contest. All shoes donated will be sent to the City Rescue Mission.

Fans will be asked to donate toys on Sunday, June 9 for a 3:05 p.m. game on A Story of Toys Day. All proceeds will benefit One More Child. When the Jumbo Shrimp celebrate Mac & Cheese Day at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, all fan non-perishable food donations will benefit Feeding Northeast Florida.

The inaugural A Better Jacksonville Series will wrap up prior to the Jumbo Shrimp’s 6:35 p.m. game on Saturday, August 10 with a school supply donation. Each donation will benefit Duval County Public Schools.

Fans who donated to each of the five monthly drives throughout the 2019 season will be entered into a drawing to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. The winner will toss out that ceremonial first pitch prior to the Jumbo Shrimp’s 6:35 p.m. contest on Sunday, August 25.

M-Braves to Salute Military and First Responders with $5 Tickets All Season

PEARL, MS – The Mississippi Braves are proud to announce that beginning in 2019; all members and veterans of all branches of the U.S. military and first responders/emergency personnel will receive $5 field level tickets ($7 discount) to all Mississippi Braves home games when presenting a valid ID. This expanded discount on tickets for all Mississippi Braves home games at Trustmark Park to our local heroes is an extension of SportClips Military Monday and AMR First Responders Wednesday.

On SportClips Military Monday this season, FREE field level or general admission tickets will be offered to all members and veterans of all branches of the U.S. military. One random fan, representing the military, will receive a SportClips prize pack. AMR First Responders Wednesday offers FREE field level or general admission tickets to first responders/emergency personnel.

Atlanta Braves Foundation Awards $2,500 Grant to Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi

PEARL, MS – The Mississippi Braves, in partnership with the Atlanta Braves Foundation, recently awarded a $2,500 grant to the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi.

As a grant recipient, the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi will support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience for underserved girls that focuses on the Girl Scout anti-bullying campaign and provides hands-on STEM Badge Activities.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Braves and this great opportunity to partner and work together for our youth,” said Becky Traweek, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi. “This grant will allow us to work with more girls in underserved areas and bring Girl Scouts to those that might not be able to participate. We are also looking forward to another successful baseball season in 2019!”

“The Braves Foundation strives to support the local community through as many channels as possible,” said Adrian Williams, Atlanta Braves’ Senior Director of Diversity and Community. “Giving back to those in Braves Country is extremely important to the Braves.”

Jumbo Shrimp to host Family Holiday Event at the Baseball Grounds Dec. 8

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and Fun 4 First Coast Kids invite fans to kick off the Holiday season with our very Shrimpy Christmas event on Saturday, December 8 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The event will run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Christmas movie classics How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Frosty’s Winter Wonderland being shown on the high-definition video board. Fans can also enjoy free pictures with Santa Claus, face painting and Christmas crafts. There will be s’more for sale, as well as other Christmas treats, and a kid zone on the field with a bouncy house and inflatable slide.

Admission is only $1 per person at the home plate gate or free with one new unwrapped toy, per family, to donate to children in need this holiday season. Attendees may sit on the field, and the stadium seating bowl will be open for seating. M-Braves Collecting Food and Supply Donations for Hurricane Michael Relief Efforts Through End of October

PEARL, MS – The Mississippi Braves, Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves will be collecting food and supply donations at Trustmark Park through the end of the month to assist those affected by Hurricane Michael. All items donated will be given to Feeding Florida, which assists the Panhandle and Tallahassee areas, and Feeding the Valley, which aids Southwest Georgia and Columbus. The team is also asking Braves Country to donate to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief efforts by visiting www.redcross.org/atlantabraves.

“Seeing the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael was our call to action,” said Derek Schiller, Braves President, and CEO. “We encourage Braves Country to donate necessity items throughout October to help those impacted by the storm. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those who are affected.”

Here is a list of items being collected by the teams: granola bars, peanut butter, tuna, soup, fruit (cups, canned or dried), cereal, grits and oatmeal, rice and pasta, bottled water, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items. Trustmark Park will begin accepting donations on Thursday, Oct. 18 through the end of the month. 

The Mississippi Braves’ drop-off location for donations will be the front office at Trustmark Park (1 Braves Way, Pearl, MS 39208) Monday-Friday from 9 am – 5 pm. Those donating items will receive a voucher for (2) Field Level Tickets for the 2019 season.

Earlier this season, the Braves distributed over 6,000 tickets over three-days to those evacuated due to Hurricane Florence and raised $100,000 for Red Cross hurricane relief efforts through the 50/50 raffle and in-game silent auctions. SMOKIES AND U.S. CELLULAR TO HOST LITTLE LEAGUE TAKEOVER

SEVIERVILLE – The Tennessee Smokies have announced they have teamed up with U.S. Cellular to host a Little League Takeover on Monday, October 1st at Sevierville City Park Baseball fields from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM. The U.S. Cellular Little League Takeover will allow the youth baseball players ages 5-13 to experience what it is like to be a Smokies player for a day.

“We are extremely excited to team up with U.S. Cellular for this event,” added Smokies President and COO Chris Allen. “This is a great event to allow these kids the chance to experience what it is like to be a Smokies player for a day. We are thrilled to be involved in this event as we love being a part of this Sevierville community.”

The event will take place at the Sevierville City Park Baseball fields located at 1005 Park Rd, Sevierville, TN 37862. The youth baseball players will play their scheduled games with a host announcing the players, on-field games, inflatables, prizes, and much more. The youth baseball players will also have a chance to feel like a true Smokies player with a mock interview station featuring a podium and a media backdrop where they can answer questions following their game.

Second-Annual Wahooloween Coming to Blue Wahoos Stadium October 26

PENSACOLA, Fla., –  For the second year in a row, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos will host Wahooloween, a free community event at Blue Wahoos Stadium, with opportunities for both families and community organizations to make this Halloween a memorable one.

Wahooloween will take place Friday, October 26 from 5-7PM.

 

Wahooloween will feature community-sponsored trick or treating on the concourse, with booths representing 30-plus local businesses and community organizations, along with Kazoo, a Halloween movie on the videoboard and concessions.

The first 1000 children will receive trick-or-treat bags.

 

Businesses are invited to support this event and the community by sponsoring a table to participate in the trick-or-treat. To participate, businesses are asked to pay $150, for which 100 percent will go Studer Community Institute to support early childhood brain development. Community participants will be asked to decorate their tables and bring candy to pass out to an expected 3,000 children.

Halfway To Mardi Gras Raises Over $5,000 For K&J Foundation

Prior to their South Divisional Playoff game on September 5, the Biloxi Shuckers presented a check to Brian and Yvette Pearse of the K&J Foundation for $5,399.56. The funds were raised from the Shuckers “Halfway to Mardi Gras” jerseys.

“Brian is a part of the Shuckers family, and when an opportunity presented itself to help out the K&J Foundation, we were thrilled to do what we could to help out,” said Shuckers General Manager Hunter Reed. “We want to thank Matt Stebly for designing another eye-grabbing jersey for the Shuckers, and we hope that the money raised helps Brian and Yvette continue their work to increase seatbelt safety awareness.”

Founded by Brian and Yvette, the K&J Foundation is committed to raising teen seatbelt safety awareness as a legacy to their children, Kiara and Jameel. During their game on August 18, the Shuckers wore special jerseys for “Halfway to Mardi Gras” night designed by local artist Matt Stebly. The game worn jerseys were featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter that morning and were auctioned off during the game. Fans were able to meet Shuckers players on the field and receive their jersey after the game concluded.

The Shuckers remain committed to community involvement and proactively seeking ways to improve the quality of life along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This season, the Shuckers have raised over $13,400 through jersey auctions, special events and sponsorship that have benefited organizations throughout the greater Biloxi area.

Wahoos Team Up with Community Partners to Renovate Century Ball Fields

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Blue Wahoos helped to renovate a cluster of fields at Showalter Park in Century, Fla. on Tuesday. The team had help from Pensacola State College baseball and softball, the PSC foundation, Bill Bond Little League and Waste Management.

The group got started at 9 a.m. and worked together to overhaul the infield clay, clean up weeds and mow the fields. The crews also worked to edge the dirt and paint the foul poles. The improvements brought the fields up to game-ready condition so that teams have a safe place to practice and play games.

“This was a great day for our community and our organization,” said Blue Wahoos President Jonathan Griffith. “It’s tremendous to see the enthusiasm that all of our volunteers had while taking time out of their busy schedules and give back to the community.”

Roughly 100 volunteers worked together on the coordinated effort led by Blue Wahoos groundskeeper Dustin Hannah. The crews worked in two shifts, morning and afternoon with lunch provided for everyone by the Blue Wahoos. Work wrapped up at roughly 5:00 p.m. with the fields looking ready for action.

This is the third year, the Blue Wahoos have led a local field renovation project. Showalter Park was selected based on the Century community’s request for assistance to revitalize the busy complex.

Jumbo Shrimp receive JAXUSA Industry Leader Award

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp received the JAXUSA Partnership Industry Leader Award on at the second quarter JAXUSA Partnership Luncheon on Tuesday, June 12. Team owner Ken Babby accepted the award, which is presented to a company each quarter that has shown outstanding growth and community involvement.

The award winner is selected by the JAXUSA senior leadership team and is based on criteria including continued growth in the region, innovative work and a commitment to the community it serves. JAXUSA recognizes the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp as a key community contributor making a positive economic impact in North Florida.

Since Babby’s Fast Forward Sports Group took ownership of the Southern League franchise in September 2015, the organization has focused on Affordable Family Fun, with notably improved fan areas – adding the Budweiser Tiki Terrace and Hot Corner, expanding the Wheelhouse Lounge, and renovating luxury suites on the BDO Suite Level. The club enhances fan experience, partnering with Community First Credit Union on a new Jumbo Shrimp VISA® Debit Card, with FIS to make the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville the flagship of “Ballparks of the Future,” and with Advanced Disposal to become the Cleanest Ballpark in Minor League Baseball. The ballpark’s non-baseball event lineup has grown to include Family Movie Nights, charity events, an annual craft beer festival and the JAX Chamber Gala. In the community, Jumbo Shrimp staff have done regular volunteer projects, and the organization has partnered with Andrew Jackson High School on a unique Jackson Five Program to introduce high school students to the sports business industry.

The award follows the Jumbo Shrimp’s recognition in the past year as the Southern League Organization of the Year and Promotional Trophy Winner, General Manager Harold Craw’s selection as Southern League Executive of the Year, as well as the club’s nomination for “Sports Breakthrough of the Year” by Sports Business Journal. Free Chevy Youth Baseball Clinics at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville June 29 & 30

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Local Chevrolet dealers are teaming up with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to provide an instructional clinic for boys and girls, baseball and softball players of all skill levels between the ages of 6 and 14. Registration is open for two sessions of the 2018 Chevy Youth Baseball Clinic that will take place Friday, June 29, and Saturday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Each session is limited to 200 players, and registration is required for each participant online at youthsportsclinics.com. For online registration, select “Market” as “Jacksonville CYB Clinics,” and click “Go!”. Enter the registration code “24389” and click “Submit.” Complete the registration form, starting with parent/guardian information, then adding clinic participant information. In addition to registering before the event, participants are required to present a completed waiver form (available to download here) at the registration table on the day of the clinic.

On the day of the event, check-in will begin one hour prior to each clinic at the Home Plate Gate of the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Participants should wear athletic apparel and bring their own glove, water bottle, and bat if available. Metal cleats will not be allowed; only closed-toed, lace-up athletic shoes and rubber cleats will be permitted. Family members are strongly encouraged to attend the entire clinic and park in lots around the Sports Complex. Clinic organizers recommend bringing a cooler with refreshments, as concessions may not be available. Immediately following the clinic, a snack will be provided for all participants.

Fans may visit any participating NAPA AutoCare Center to get a FREE general admission ticket (reserved seat upgrade available at the box office) for the game that concludes with NAPA AutoCare Family Fireworks. The Jumbo Shrimp wear red “Bold City” jerseys to support the military on Red Shirt Friday, when fans who wear red can save $1 per ticket at the box office or donate the $1 to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Friday Night Lites Miller Lite Happy Hour offers $1 12-oz. Generals announce 2018 Baseball Skills Camps

JACKSON, TENN. – The Jackson Generals will hold their annual Baseball Skills Camps for Jackson-area youth baseball players on Friday, July 13, and Thursday, July 26, 2018.

The two one-day camps, which will feature instruction in hitting, pitching, and defense from current Jackson Generals players, will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The Ballpark at Jackson for kids ages 9 to 14 years old.

Parents and coaches who are interested in signing up their children for Baseball Skills Camps can register by filling out the attached flyer and returning it with payment to Promotions Manager Robbie Perry at 4 Fun Place, Jackson TN, 38305. The cost to attend a one-day skills camp is $50 per child, plus tax. Campers who participate in both one-day skills camps will be charged a discounted rate of $45 plus tax for each day.

In addition to receiving instruction from current professional baseball players, campers will be given an exclusive Baseball Skills Camp t-shirt, as well as a private autograph session. Sack lunches will be provided to campers, and each camper will also receive a ticket and food passport to the Generals’ game occurring on either July 13 or July 26.

Andrew Jackson students to host ballpark food drive Monday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A group of students from Andrew Jackson High School are using the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s annual Education Day game to help those in need in local schools and the Northeast Florida community. The students will host a food drive for Feeding Northeast Florida at the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s Education Day game on Monday, May 21, at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Students from the Jackson Five program, which introduces high school students to the sports business industry, will collect non-perishable food items at the third base gate before and during the 11:05 a.m. game. Gates open at 10:00 a.m. Everyone who donates an item at the third base gate will be entered in a drawing for prizes from the Jumbo Shrimp.

“We are so impressed by the effort students at Andrew Jackson High School are making on behalf of those most vulnerable in our community,” said Feeding Northeast Florida President and CEO Frank D. Castillo. “This food drive comes at a perfect time. Without access to the free or reduced school lunch programs, many of the families we serve struggle to feed their children during the summer months. More than 81,000 local kids are considered food insecure, and it is inspiring to see these students at Andrew Jackson stepping up to help their fellow students.”

In its second year after beginning as a unique partnership between the Jumbo Shrimp and Andrew Jackson High School, the Jackson Five program has 10 students who gained hands-on experience during the series of high school games at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville in March and have had mentoring sessions with various departments of the Jumbo Shrimp front office. Students will also be involved in Monday’s game day operations and helped contribute to this press release.

“I am proud of the growth of the Jackson Five Program and the students who show selfless dedication to making an impact for our community,” said Jumbo Shrimp General Manager Harold Craw. “Through the program, students are getting a first-hand look at our organization, and their enthusiasm and ideas energize our staff. We are grateful they chose to share their talents with us.”

UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp open a six-game, five-day homestand with Mobile at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. For National Police Week, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams will throw a ceremonial first pitch, and police vehicles and trucks will be on display at the ballpark. Blue Wahoos Show Gratitude with Military Mascots

Pensacola, Fla. – To kick off Military Appreciation Month, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos have unveiled five new mascots representing each branch of the United States Military. The mascots participate in an on-field race between innings during every home game at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

“We thought it would be so wonderful to honor the military and we thought we could have a lot of fun with fans rooting on who can win each night,” said team owner Quint Studer.

A blue falcon with a flight helmet represents the Air Force, the Army is depicted by a mule, a bulldog for the Marines, the Coast Guard is depicted by a bear and the Navy is a goat. The mascots represent the appreciation the Blue Wahoos have collectively as an organization for the men and women who serve our country, in particular, those assigned to our many bases around the Pensacola area.

“We started this last August, so it has been over a year in planning between design and the finished product,” said Blue Wahoos President Jonathan Griffith. “We got a lot of feedback from the military community. We wanted to make sure we represented the military right.”

The Blue Wahoos will launch a naming contest for each of the mascots later in the summer. Fans will be given the opportunity to submit creative names for each of the mascots. The names will be ceremoniously chosen to conclude the contest.
