Meet the Team and STEM Day Among Homestand Highlights

FREDERICK, MD -The Frederick Keys return to Nymeo Field on Sunday night to begin a four-game series against the Potomac Nationals. This features the second Meet the Team Event of the Year and concludes with STEM Day on Tuesday morning. For tickets fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.

First pitch on Sunday is at 6:00 p.m and gates open one hour prior. When fans arrive they can head down to the field for the Keys second Meet the Team Event of the year. From 5-5:30 Keys players and coaches will be meeting fans and signing autographs. During this time fans can also enjoy a catch in the outfield as part of Sunday Funday presented by Chili’s.

Following the game there will be Luke Bryan fireworks presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, Somerford House and Heartfields Assisted Living at Frederick. It is also Alzheimer’s Awareness Night as we will be spreading awareness about the disease and other dementias.

On Monday, the Keys and P-Nats play a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m and gates opening at four o’clock. Both games will be seven innings. It is Strike Out Stroke Night sponsored by Frederick Memorial Hospital, as the Keys and FMH will spread awareness about signs of strokes and how to prevent them.

As always, youngsters can enjoy Kids Eat Free Monday courtesy of Key 103 and Buffalo Wild Wings. Kids 12 and under receive a voucher for a free hot dog, chips and drink, while it is a Make a Difference Monday as well sponsored by BGE Home.

The short homestand concludes on Tuesday with STEM Day at 11:00 a.m sponsored by AstraZeneca. A fieldtrip for students of Frederick County Schools, local businesses and non-profits will be on hand to educate students about science, technology, engineering and math and discuss their careers in the STEM sector. Fans that come out can also enjoy a Guaranteed Win Tuesday sponsored by WFRE & WFMD. Should the Keys lose, fans can exchange their ticket at the box office for tickets to a future Keys game.

On Sunday the Keys send left-hander Keegan Akin (3-4, 5.95) to the mound against Nationals southpaw Hector Silvestre (5-1, 4.31). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m, and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App.

MVP Program Rewards STEM Achievements of Local Students

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Dodgers and Devon Energy partnered this past school year to create a free program for area elementary students to recognize and reward their achievements in science and math. Approximately 1,000 third- and fourth-grade students in Oklahoma City Public Schools were impacted by the first-year OKC Dodgers MVP Program presented by Devon Energy.

“Devon Energy is committed to helping communities inspire young people to pursue an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects by working with schools and community organizations to enhance access to STEM education,” said Christina Rehkop, supervisor of community affairs for Devon Energy. “Partnering with the OKC Dodgers for the MVP Program provided an ideal opportunity to further this goal.”

The MVP Program encourages area students and their teachers to participate in STEM curriculum. Top-performing MVP students in participating classrooms received tickets to an OKC Dodgers game and a commemorative MVP baseball hat.

The first year of the program culminates Saturday with MVP Field Day at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark – an event for MVP students and teachers, as well as their families. STEM activities will be available throughout MVP Field Day, presented by Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma, iFly OKC, Devon Energy, Science Museum Oklahoma and the OKC Dodgers. OKC Dodgers players will also participate in the event, helping with hitting and throwing instruction, as well as signing autographs.

“We received an incredible response from Oklahoma City third- and fourth-grade teachers and their students during the first year of the OKC Dodgers MVP Program presented by Devon Energy,” said OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes. “We are proud to have the chance to reward these students and teachers for their hard work throughout the school year and encourage future participation in STEM education throughout the Oklahoma City community.”

The OKC Dodgers MVP Program presented by Devon Energy will resume in August for the 2017-18 school year. The OKC Dodgers open a four-game series tonight against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at 7:05 p.m. at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on a $2 Thursday that features $2 soda, bottled water and beer from a line of Pepsi and Budweiser products.

Friday is Hometown Heroes Military Celebration Night and special festivities will be held throughout the evening, culminating with postgame fireworks presented by LifeShare. A variety of armored vehicles will be on display on the ballpark’s plazas starting at 5 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Saturday’s 7:05 p.m. game against the Sky Sox falls on Marvel Super Hero Night and fans can meet Spider-Man and Captain America throughout the evening. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the first 500 fans age 12 and under will receive a free Dodgers cape.

Sunday’s game starts at 2:05 p.m. on Faith Night and a Chaparral Energy Family Sunday. Each Sunday home game offers family friendly activities throughout the afternoon, including pregame player autographs and kids can run the bases after the game. A special $15 ticket will provide admission to a postgame concert by Sanctus Real.

Science, tech students can earn Legends tickets

Cards will be used to record students’ progress and can be redeemed for Legends’ tickets when all four activities have been completed.

  The Lexington Legends are stepping into the fields of science and technology through a new educational program.

The Legends are working with the Instructional Technology Department of Fayette County Public Schools to provide an incentive for students in the Kentucky Department of Education’s Science and Technology Leadership Program (STLP) to participate in academic activities related to those studies.

As students complete four key activities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), their progress will be recorded on punch cards that will be distributed to students by STLP coordinators.   The activities are listed under the four “C’s” of STEM:

Critical thinking – Students must complete an hour of coding.

Creativity – Students must create some type of innovative project using technology.

Collaboration – Students must attend an STLP meeting or STEM Fair.

Communication – Students must teach someone else something they have learned, either one-on-one or through a class presentation.

When the completion of all four activities is recorded on their card, students may redeem the card at the Legends box office for two tickets to a home game.

“The Legends are pleased to work with Fayette County Public Schools on this project,” said Sarah Bosso, Legends’ vice president for business development.   “It’s important for students to be immersed in 21st century learning, and Fayette County Public Schools is doing a phenomenal job providing outlets for this type of experience. The Legends are more than happy to provide additional incentive for students in the form of fun at the ballpark. We look forward to having them with us for the 2017 season.”

“Fayette County Public Schools and the Office of Instructional Technology recognize the importance of STEM education and skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication,” said Amy Johns, Coordinator of Instructional Technology forFayette County Public Schools. “Through the Student Technology Leadership Program, we encourage schools to give students opportunities to practice those skills in a variety of ways, because we know these are key for our students to be successful in a global community.

“We are excited that our community partners, the Lexington Legends, also value and support the need for students to practice these skills and are partnering with us in a unique STEM/STLP program to reward students for their work,” she added. “We believe this opportunity will draw attention to the importance of this kind of learning at all grade levels and we deeply appreciate The Legends support of our efforts.”

STLP’s mission is to use project-based learning principles to empower student learning and achievement through the utilization and creation of technology to solve school and community needs.

Knights Announce 2015 Scholarships with Founding Partners

Charlotte-Knights-2014The Charlotte Knights are once again teaming up with two of their founding partners to provide educational funding through two unique scholarships for high school students. The Charlotte Knights Healthcare Scholarship, presented by Carolinas HealthCare System, along with the Charlotte Knights STEM Scholarship Program, presented by Piedmont Natural Gas, each represent the team’s focus on community initiatives.

“We are excited to once again team with Carolinas HealthCare System and Piedmont Natural Gas on these very important scholarships for local high school students,” said Chris Semmens, Charlotte Knights vice president of sales. “Supporting education is one of our primary goals and we look forward to working with our founding partners to help local students prepare for successful careers.”

The Knights and Carolinas HealthCare System began their partnership in 2013 with the Charlotte Knights Healthcare Scholarship program. That season, the Knights honored high school students John Dock Tallent (Appalachian State University), Gisele Bailey (Harvard University) and Stephanie Smith (UNC – Chapel Hill) as the inaugural recipients of the Charlotte Knights Healthcare Scholarship program presented by Carolinas HealthCare System. Last season, three more high school students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship each — Adam Miranda (NC State), Sarah York (Wake Forest), and Xena Nguyen (UNC – Chapel Hill).

In an effort to improve educational funding for high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care, the Charlotte Knights and Carolinas HealthCare System will once again provide three $1,000 college scholarships to local high school seniors in 2015.

“Carolinas HealthCare System’s vision is to lead the transformation of health care delivery and a key part of that effort is attracting the next generation of motivated, creative health care professionals,” said Carol Lovin, Executive Vice President of Carolinas HealthCare System. “Partnering with the Charlotte Knights to provide these scholarships is a great way to help turn that vision into reality.”

The Knights and Piedmont Natural Gas also will award three $1,000 college scholarships to high school seniors from the Charlotte region who plan to attend college and pursue studies in the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering or math. Last year, Piedmont and the Knights awarded three $1,000 scholarships to students attending college within Piedmont’s service territories in North and South Carolina. The three winners of the inaugural scholarship were EmmaLee Apple (Alamance Community College), James Reynolds (Bob Jones University), and Cody Wright (Guilford Technical Community College).

“STEM education is a focus area for Piedmont Natural Gas, and we are happy to join the Knights in offering these scholarships to students in the Charlotte region,” said Timothy Greenhouse, managing director of community relations for Piedmont Natural Gas. “Piedmont will continue to support programs like this that expand educational opportunities in our communities.”

The Carolinas HealthCare System scholarships will be awarded during an on-field ceremony at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday, July 21, while the Piedmont Natural Gas scholarships will be awarded during an on-field ceremony on Thursday, July 23.

Drive Support Fluor’s “Discover E Week” Initiative

Team of Fluor engineers to visit 5 Greenville County schools

Fluor and the Greenville Drive are working together to encourage local young people to pursue their interests in the engineering profession. The National Engineers Week Foundation and their coalition strive to be the global leader in cultivating and celebrating the engineering profession. The Discover E program highlighted during National Engineers Week (February 20-26, 2011) helps grade school and high school students discover the exciting worlds of engineering and technology. The goal is to relate practical applications of math, science, and engineering to the world around them.

Education is a priority at Fluor, both for the company and its employees. As a Leadership Council member with the National Engineers Week Foundation, Fluor actively participates in the nationwide Discover E program, joining more than 5 million engineers, designers, principals, teachers, and students. Volunteers visit local middle and high schools to introduce young people to engineering in a fun and interesting ways. During Engineer’s Week, Fluor will speak at 5 schools and cover approximately 24 classes where 1000 students will be exposed to the many attributes of the engineering profession.

Students who participated in Discover E week have the opportunity to provide feedback about their experience. In a continued effort to constantly improve Discover E week, students who take the survey will receive a ticket to a 2011 Greenville Drive game.
