Ports annual Pink Night scheduled for August 23

Fireworks show will conclude a night of charitable giving

STOCKTON, Calif.-The Stockton Ports have once again partnered with St. Joseph’s Medical Center in support of their Breast Health Services. Over the past six seasons, the Ports have supported St. Joseph’s through the annual Pink Night and have raised over $30,000 with help from the Stockton community.

Prior to the Ports hosting the Visalia Rawhide at 7:05 p.m. the 4th annual “Home Run-a-Thon” will take place on the field at Banner Island Ballpark at 5:35 p.m. Area television, radio and community celebrities will take their swings in the event. The gates will open at 5:05 p.m. Throughout the home run-a-thon fans are encouraged to make pledges for each home run hit. The home run event was established in 2010 when then Ports manager Steve Scarsone was closely affected by the disease. Scarsone’s wife, Becki, was battling with breast cancer. She is now doing well and is cancer free.

The Stockton community plays a big part in making Pink Night a success. The biggest fundraising component of the night is one dollar from every ticket sold will go back to St. Joseph’s Hospitals Breast Health Services. In addition to the funds raised through ticket sales and the donations from the home run-a-thon, a number of other activities will take place during the Ports game. There will be a player memorabilia raffle, Pink t-shirts available, a Pink game-worn jersey auction during the game as well as a huge fireworks show. Local businesses also have a chance to participate by purchasing business booths, group tickets, and donating raffle prizes.

“The Ports are proud to team up with St. Joseph’s Medical Center for our 7th annual Pink Night. The night would not be possible without the generosity and support of the Stockton community” said Ports Community Relations Manager Kellie Ryan.

DIVERSITY DAY ON CONEY ISLAND – AUGUST 19th

Brooklyn NY, August 14, 2013 – Last week, vandals defaced the statue of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese, located outside MCU Park in Coney Island with hateful words and symbols which have since been removed. In light of these recent events, the Cyclones and Alliance for Coney Island will join together with community leaders to host Diversity Day in Coney Island, for what will be a historic doubleheader on Monday, August 19th in conjunction with the Coney Island Flicks on the Beach screening of “42” later in the evening

Prior to the Brooklyn Cyclones taking on the Staten Island Yankees in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 PM, the Cyclones, along with The Jackie Robinson Foundation, The Jackie Robinson Little League, Major League Baseball and other local community leaders will host a rededication ceremony for the Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese statue, which stands as a monument to these men of “courage and conviction” as engraved on the base of the statue which was originally erected in November 2005.

“The events of last week were both heartbreaking and incomprehensible” said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen. “But we are trying to turn the negative and disgusting actions of one person into a night of unity and understanding for an entire community. Over 60 years ago Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese stood resolute in the face of bigotry and hatred, and in a much smaller way we are trying to do the same thing.”

Following the ceremony and baseball game, there will be a special screening of the Warner Bros. movie “42” as part of the “Flicks on the Beach” Series presented by Alliance for Coney Island, Rooftop Films and NYC & Company. Guests will be invited to watch the critically-acclaimed film on a 40-foot screen on the sand of Coney Island near West 10th Street.

“We are proud to be screening the monumental film ‘42’ which provides a biography of Brooklyn hero Jackie Robinson. A silver lining to this offensive act is that Coney Island can band together and commemorate Robinson’s legacy during Diversity Day, and celebrate the strength of our community and the history of Brooklyn,” said Johanna Zaki, Alliance for Coney Island Director of Operations.

Rome Braves to Host Tornado Relief Rally on August 17th

The Rome Braves will be hosting a Tornado Relief Rally on Saturday, August 17 at State Mutual Stadium. Bobby Cox, former Atlanta Braves manager, and Glenn Burns, chief meteorologist at WSB-TV in Atlanta, are scheduled to attend to help raise funds for those affected by the tornado that hit Northwest Georgia on January 30, 2013.

On Wednesday January 30, a strong cold front pushed through the eastern United States and triggered multiple severe thunderstorms. Around 11am in Adairsville, GA, a supercell formed an EF-3 tornado. Gordon and Bartow County were hit heavily. Bartow County sustained damage to 95 structures and in Gordon County at least 268 homes were affected with 30 being completely destroyed. Thousands of trees and many power lines were downed in both counties, with several of those trees falling onto homes. After the storm cleared, 17 people were injured and one person was killed.

On Saturday night, the front concourse will be setup for emergency preparedness. Fans entering the gates can learn how to prepare for a weather emergency and how to build an emergency kit. Also all pre-game activities will involve Bartow and Gordon County residents who were affected by the storm. Zane McFarland and his grandmother Betty Stewart will be throwing out the first pitch, Georgia House will be singing the National Anthem and Ahmad Hall will perform God Bless America. Additional recognition for those who responded to the tornado will be held during the game.

A portion of ticket proceeds will go to the Northwest Georgia Red Cross to continue to support and help those affected by the storm.

Douglas Park FREE Baseball Clinic

The Elizabethton Twins will be conducting a free Youth Baseball Clinic on August 17, 10:30AM to 12:30PM at Douglas Park.

Douglas Park is located behind the Elizabethton City School System Administrative Offices at 804 South Watauga Avenue. Instruction in the fundamentals of baseball will take place along with lunch and an autograph session.

“We look forward to a great day at Douglas Park and hope to see many of our local youth at this event, said Mike Mains, Parks and Recreation Director.” “This is just another way our Minor League Baseball Franchise can give back to this community which is a win for our players, staff and fans alike.”

The camp will feature basic instruction in hitting, fielding and throwing. Participants will also have the opportunity to talk one on one with Elizabethton Twins players, will receive tickets to a future game and will have lunch with team members. LAKEWOOD, NJ – The BlueClaws will host a School Supply Drive at their game on Friday, August 23rd to benefit the Salvation Army of Ocean County.

Fans are encouraged to drop off items at the New Jersey Natural Gas Information Booth during the game, which begins at 7:05 pm.

Anyone that donates will receive a voucher for two tickets to one of the four Labor Day weekend BlueClaws home games – August 30th – September 2nd (promotions here).

Legends, Royals team up on Project Purple Aug. 23

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends are teaming up with their major league affiliate, the Kansas City Royals, for a Project Purple night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Friday, August 23.

Project Purple is an initiative of The Herren Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player Chris Herren. Project Purple assists individuals and families struggling with addiction. It was established to break the stigma of addiction, increase awareness of the dangers of substance abuse and shed light on effective treatment practices.

Legends’ players will wear purple caps with the Royals “KC” logo during the August 23 game against Greenville. A silent auction for the caps will be conducted during the game. The winning bidders will go on the field after the game to receive their cap, which will be autographed by the Legends player who wore that cap during the game. All proceeds from the auction will directly benefit the Herron Project/Project Purple.

Fans are encouraged to wear purple to the game, and those who do may buy a box seat ticket for the special price of seven dollars.

Project Purple information and items such as t-shirts and rubber bracelets will be available at tables on the concourse near the silent auction tables.

“The Kansas City Royals are proud to partner with the Lexington Legends and The Herren Project to promote and support Project Purple,” said Royals director of player development Scott Sharp. “We were fortunate to have Chris speak to our players during spring training about his struggles with substance abuse. He made a tremendous impact on our athletes, and we are proud to support him and his foundation in educating youth and adolescents about the pitfalls of substance abuse and addiction.”

READING, Pa.—Ed Randall’s Bat for the Cure Baseball Road Trip will be making a stop in Baseballtown to raise awareness for prostate cancer and early detection for those attending the Monday, August 26th game at 7:05 p.m.

On August 26th, Fightin Phils players and staff will be donning blue wristbands during the game to shed light on prostate cancer awareness. There will also be public address announcements throughout the night encouraging men to stop by the table for more information. For those that stop at the table, Ed Randall’s Bat for the Cure will raffle a 32″ baby blue wooden bat signed by the Fightin Phils and emblazoned with the Bat for the Cure logo.

The visit to FirstEnergy Stadium is one of nearly 170 that Bat for the Cure will make in 2013. Since starting in 2007, the Baseball Road Trip has become the largest healthcare initiative in the history of Minor League Baseball. Each year, representatives from the organization spread the word about the benefits of early detection.

Founded in 2003, Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure was created to help inform the American public about prostate cancer. A nationally known baseball broadcaster based in New York City, Randall is a prostate cancer survivor who established the non-profit group after being given a second chance at life. Over the past few years, Fans for the Cure has spun off Bat for the Cure in 2007 with their first annual Minor League Prostate Cancer Awareness and Education Road Trip.

The organization has grown to include a notable group of prostate cancer survivors on the Legends for Life Advisory Board, including Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Carlton Fisk, and Phil Niekro. Arnold Palmer, Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, and Marv Levy also have lent their voices to promote awareness.

2013 FSL Scholarship Winner: Michael Cook

Tampa, FL. – The Tampa Yankees, in conjunction with the Florida State League and the Miami Marlins, are pleased to announce Michael Cook as their 2013 scholarship award winner. The Florida State League Scholarship committee award 12 individuals with $1,500 educational scholarships. The committee approved the awards after a review of the applications submitted by all the Florida State League teams.

Michael Cook is a graduate of Plant City High School. He has recently been attending Hillsborough Community College and has one semester left before he plans to transfer to the University of Tampa. Michael plans to get his degree in either Business or Accounting with a minor in Sport Management. This is Michael’s first season with the Yankees working for both New York Yankees Spring Training and the Tampa Yankees regular season.

Michael was honored at the Tampa Yankees home game on August 16th, versus the Lakeland Flying Tigers at George M. Steinbrenner Field. In addition, he will be introduced during a pre-game ceremony at the Miami Marlins game on Sunday, August 18th along with the other Florida State League teams’ award winners.

The Miami Marlins/Florida State League scholarship program is awarded to students that are an employee of, or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club and must be at least a high school junior by the 2013 fall term. The Miami Marlins have sponsored this program for fourteen years and have contributed a total of $136,500 to the Florida State Program.

RiverDogs Donate $20,000 to MUSC Storm Eye Institute

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Charleston RiverDogs have yet again left a large paw print on the fight against blindness and retinitis pigmentosa.

During the Friday, August 9 contest against the Rome Braves at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols presented a check for $20,000 to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Storm Eye Institute and its director, Dr. Lucian Del Priore.

The donation comes from proceeds from the RiverDogs’ 14th annual Kindness Beats Blindness Auction, the 10th Annual “Run Forrest Run” 5K, the 9th Annual Hot Stove Banquet and the 8th Annual Golf Outing.

MUSC-Health-Storm-EyeThe Storm Eye Institute was selected as a result of RiverDogs President Mike Veeck’s daughter, Rebecca, being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a group of inherited diseases causing retinal degeneration. Veeck and his wife, Libby, have dedicated themselves and most of their charitable efforts toward fighting blindness.

“To work hand-in-hand with the Charleston community for the Storm Eye Institute is something we, as an organization, really look forward to every year,” said Echols. “Seeing first-hand the effect this disease can have on a family adds a level of personality and affection to our fundraising efforts.”

“We are immensely grateful for the RiverDogs’ continued support in our quest to find cures and treatments for blinding eye diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa,” said Dr. Del Priore. “The RiverDogs’ extraordinary generosity over the last 14 years has been critical to the work that our vision scientists are doing in this area.”

With proceeds from the various RiverDogs special event projects, the team and the Charleston community as a whole have raised more than $500,000 towards preventative research for the degenerative disease.

Army Veteran to Receive Key to City at Tradition Field on August 10

The St. Lucie Mets have announced U.S. Army Major David Paterson will throw out the first pitch and receive the Key to the City from Port St. Lucie Mayor JoAnn Faiella on Saturday, August 10 at Tradition Field. The Mets host the Palm Beach Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

David Paterson was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Meritorious Service Medal during two tours in Iraq.

Paterson graduated the University of Central Florida in 2000.

Paterson was promoted to Captain and Company Commander in 2007 and was promoted to Major in July of 2013.

New Life Necessities Diaper Drive

Your donation of a package of diapers will gain you free admission to Power games all month long!

Life Necessities Diaper Bank, a program of CDOM, was established to eradicate diaper need in West Virginia. New Life Necessities provides diapers at no charge to agencies who distributes them to families in need.

“New Life Necessities Diaper Bank has distributed over 5,000 diapers to almost 300 families in just the last four months that we’ve been open,” says Erica Strother, Director of New Life Necessities. “Diaper need is a basic need for babies just like food, clothing and shelter, yet there is very little assistance. Both the parents and the children suffer emotionally and physically,” said Strother.

“We are excited to partner with Erica and the Diaper Bank for the remainder of our 2013 regular season home schedule,” says Jeremy Taylor, Assistant General Manger of the Power. “Since the opening of Appalachian Power Park in 2005, the West Virginia Power has, and always will be, a community driven organization and we are more than thrilled to be able to help with the tremendous need for diapers in this community.”

With every package of diapers donated at the West Virginia Power Box Office on Morris Street you will receive two free General Admission tickets to that night’s game or an upcoming 2013 regular season game of your choice. Your donations may be dropped off at the Box Office.
