The Elizabethton Twins will be conducting a free Youth Baseball Clinic on August 17, 10:30AM to 12:30PM at Douglas Park.

Douglas Park is located behind the Elizabethton City School System Administrative Offices at 804 South Watauga Avenue. Instruction in the fundamentals of baseball will take place along with lunch and an autograph session.

“We look forward to a great day at Douglas Park and hope to see many of our local youth at this event, said Mike Mains, Parks and Recreation Director.” “This is just another way our Minor League Baseball Franchise can give back to this community which is a win for our players, staff and fans alike.”

The camp will feature basic instruction in hitting, fielding and throwing. Participants will also have the opportunity to talk one on one with Elizabethton Twins players, will receive tickets to a future game and will have lunch with team members. 2013 FSL Scholarship Winner: Michael Cook

Tampa, FL. – The Tampa Yankees, in conjunction with the Florida State League and the Miami Marlins, are pleased to announce Michael Cook as their 2013 scholarship award winner. The Florida State League Scholarship committee award 12 individuals with $1,500 educational scholarships. The committee approved the awards after a review of the applications submitted by all the Florida State League teams.

Michael Cook is a graduate of Plant City High School. He has recently been attending Hillsborough Community College and has one semester left before he plans to transfer to the University of Tampa. Michael plans to get his degree in either Business or Accounting with a minor in Sport Management. This is Michael’s first season with the Yankees working for both New York Yankees Spring Training and the Tampa Yankees regular season.

Michael was honored at the Tampa Yankees home game on August 16th, versus the Lakeland Flying Tigers at George M. Steinbrenner Field. In addition, he will be introduced during a pre-game ceremony at the Miami Marlins game on Sunday, August 18th along with the other Florida State League teams’ award winners.

The Miami Marlins/Florida State League scholarship program is awarded to students that are an employee of, or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club and must be at least a high school junior by the 2013 fall term. The Miami Marlins have sponsored this program for fourteen years and have contributed a total of $136,500 to the Florida State Program.

RiverDogs Donate $20,000 to MUSC Storm Eye Institute

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Charleston RiverDogs have yet again left a large paw print on the fight against blindness and retinitis pigmentosa.

During the Friday, August 9 contest against the Rome Braves at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols presented a check for $20,000 to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Storm Eye Institute and its director, Dr. Lucian Del Priore.

The donation comes from proceeds from the RiverDogs’ 14th annual Kindness Beats Blindness Auction, the 10th Annual “Run Forrest Run” 5K, the 9th Annual Hot Stove Banquet and the 8th Annual Golf Outing.

MUSC-Health-Storm-EyeThe Storm Eye Institute was selected as a result of RiverDogs President Mike Veeck’s daughter, Rebecca, being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a group of inherited diseases causing retinal degeneration. Veeck and his wife, Libby, have dedicated themselves and most of their charitable efforts toward fighting blindness.

“To work hand-in-hand with the Charleston community for the Storm Eye Institute is something we, as an organization, really look forward to every year,” said Echols. “Seeing first-hand the effect this disease can have on a family adds a level of personality and affection to our fundraising efforts.”

“We are immensely grateful for the RiverDogs’ continued support in our quest to find cures and treatments for blinding eye diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa,” said Dr. Del Priore. “The RiverDogs’ extraordinary generosity over the last 14 years has been critical to the work that our vision scientists are doing in this area.”

With proceeds from the various RiverDogs special event projects, the team and the Charleston community as a whole have raised more than $500,000 towards preventative research for the degenerative disease.

Gwinnett BravesThe Gwinnett Braves have awarded their $1,000 grant for the month of June to J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA. The “Summer Safety” themed grant is aimed at assisting organizations that promote safety programs for children.

The J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA has been serving the Gwinnett community since 1974. The program offers wellness facilities for adults and families, while also assisting the community with non-member programs. J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA continues to empower and transform lives around the community, serving over 12,000 Gwinnett residents through these programs.

YMCA-logo-green&blueThe funds from the grant awarded by the Gwinnett Braves will help J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA in its continued mission to teach members of the community how to swim. Since 1986, the J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA has been teaching youth and adults to swim and instructing their participants with life-saving techniques. The classes are intended for all ages, even young children as the YMCA offers a “SPLASH” program for ages 6 through 10. The program introduces children to the fundamentals of swimming and basic water safety.

“For over 15 years, the J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA has been teaching youth and adults the ability to swim and importance of water safety,” said Kimberly Nelson, Executive Director of J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA. “The education and instruction of water safety is crucial for all communities including Gwinnett County. Because of the generosity of the Gwinnett Braves Foundation, the YMCA is able to assist families that could not afford to participate in swim lessons and empower them with skills to be safer. As a community, we need to be especially cautious during the summer months when water incidents increase compared to the rest of the year. Together, the Y and Gwinnett Braves are making an impact and helping to save lives.”

Play4Health event slated for August 17

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will host a free event at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Saturday, August 17, prior to Myrtle Beach’s home game that evening against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The clinic will run from 8:30-11:30 am.

The clinic will be hosted by the Pelicans players and Play4Health, and those that participate will receive a free ticket to the game and family members will receive a discounted ticket offer. The Pelicans play the Hillcats later that night beginning at 6:05 p.m.

Manchester Goes Back to School

Fisher Cats hosting free school supply event

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Fisher Cats Foundation are partnering again with Manchester Christian Church, Queen City Paint, and the Ted Williams Museum to present Manchester Goes Back to School 2013 on Wednesday, August 14, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The back-to-school program, in its second year, will provide free school supplies to thousands of Manchester families heading back to school this fall.

“A year ago, this was a new idea to provide a positive start for families heading into the new school year,” said Art Solomon, Fisher Cats owner and chairman of the Fisher Cats Foundation board. “Because of the overwhelming gratitude and success of last year’s event, we couldn’t be more proud to team up with our partners to be able to help even more families this year.”

In the initial Manchester Goes Back to School event last summer, approximately 3,000 students received new school supplies, purchased and donated by members of Manchester Christian Church. This year, the Church is working to fill 4,000 red drawstring backpacks, which were donated by Delete Blood Cancer.

“We have an amazing opportunity to come together as a church and show the Manchester area how much we love to care about our community,” said Bo Chancey, Senior Pastor at Manchester Christian Church. “At Manchester Christian Church we pray for One daily, asking God to give us each one person to share His love with. Providing 4,000 bags of school supplies to our community is just one way we can share that love.”

“This is such a generous and beneficial event for our students as they enter a new school year,” said new Manchester Superintendent Dr. Debra Livingston. “Being new to this district, I am impressed by the community spirit of the Fisher Cats, Manchester Christian Church, Queen City Paint, and the Ted Williams Museum to host such an amazing event. This is a great steppingstone for a successful academic year.”

“It’s wonderful that for the second year in a row the Fisher Cats, Manchester Christian Church, Queen City Paint, and the Ted Williams Museum have stepped up to provide Manchester students with school supplies,” said Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas. “The back-to-school program shows Queen City residents what great community partners we have within our City limits. The Fisher Cats are inviting the community to join this important program. While the members of Manchester Christian Church have generously provided the majority of the school supplies, additional funds are needed to fully satisfy the expected need for supplies. Community members may also volunteer to provide healthy refreshments and assist in the coordination and distribution of supplies at the event.

Additional funds and undistributed school supplies will be used to provide supplies to Manchester schools throughout the academic year.

Knights Announce 2013 HealthCare Scholarship Award Winners

(Fort Mill, SC) – The Charlotte Knights, Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and Carolinas HealthCare System, are pleased to announce the names of the three winners of the 2013 Charlotte Knights Healthcare Scholarship Program. The winners are John Dock Tallent, Gisele Bailey, and Stephanie Smith.

The scholarship program is dedicated to providing educational opportunities to the youth in our communities. A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to the winners to assist them in future academic endeavors. Each of their names will be inscribed on a plaque that will be prominently displayed on the Carolinas HealthCare System Home Run Porch at BB&T Ballpark.

“We are proud to announce such accomplished winners for our first scholarship,” said Knights Vice President of Sales Chris Semmens. “We feel these recipients closely represent the values and mission of the Knights and Carolinas HealthCare System. We look forward to hearing about their future achievements and wish them luck in all their endeavors.”

Brief information about the 2013 Charlotte Knights HealthCare Scholarship Program recipients:

•    John Dock Tallent – Tallent graduated from West Lincoln High School and was ranked #1 in his class. He played varsity golf and was the student body president. Tallent will attend Appalachian State University this fall to pursue a degree in the medical field. John hopes to one day become a doctor.

•    Gisele Bailey – Bailey is a recent graduate of Charlotte Christian High, where she held a 4.9 GPA this year. Also an athlete, Bailey was a varsity basketball player who ranked 27th at her position nationally by ESPN. She is heading to Harvard this fall and will be a member of the Crimson Women’s Basketball team.

•    Stephanie Smith – Smith is a recent graduate of Lake Norman High School. Last summer Stephanie performed research at Davidson College laboratories. She will be attending UNC-Chapel Hill this fall and hopes to become a neurosurgeon. She plans to focus on biomedical engineering, with an emphasis on neuroscience.

The three winners were recently honored at the Charlotte Knights game on Friday, July 19 during a special pre-game on-field ceremony. Dr. Michael Gibbs, Chair of Emergency Medicine, was on hand to present the award to the recipients.

High school seniors enrolled in one of the following North or South Carolina counties: Cabarrus, Catawba, Chester, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lancaster, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Union, or York County, are eligible for the 2014 Charlotte Knights Healthcare Scholarship Program. Applicants must be attending an accredited institution of higher education in the fall of 2014, and will be judged on academic performance; volunteer and community involvement; and sports and extracurricular activities. Springfield, MO – The Springfield Cardinals, Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, are excited to announce the details for the upcoming Cardinals Youth Baseball Clinics at Hammons Field, presented by Balls-n-Strikes. The clinics will be held on Wednesday, August 7 and Saturday, August 10, both running from 9am – 12pm. Check in on both days will begin at 8am.

The Cardinals Youth Baseball Clinics are designed for kids, ages seven to 12, and will be limited to just 100 spots each to maximize the personal instruction from Springfield Cardinals players and coaches. The clinics will include batting practice in the Cardinals Indoor Facility, pitching lessons in the bullpen and fielding instruction on the award-winning Hammons Field. SAN JOSE, CA – The San Jose Giants announced today new dates for their final summer clinic at Municipal Stadium. The two-day session, originally scheduled for August 17-18, will now take place August 10-11 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the home of the San Jose Giants. Participants will not only have the chance to play on the same field as future Major Leaguers, but also be coached by current San Jose Giants players. Princeton Rays Looking for Pop Tabs To Help Others

“Saves” are an important statistic in baseball. The Princeton Rays are hopeful they can encourage all the team’s fans to save all their soda pop pull tabs and bring them to Hunnicutt Field. The Princeton Rays will in turn donate the pop tabs to Ronald McDonald Charities through their Charleston, WV facility.

The collection of pop tabs is an important revenue-raising source for Ronald McDonald House locations world-wide. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is an independent 501c3 organization whose mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.

Once pop tabs are opened on a soft drink can, at first glance they seem to have no further relevant use but the Princeton Rays and the Princeton Senior High School Key Club beg to differ. The P-Rays are honored to join the local high school’s Key Club chapter in their quest to accumulate pop tabs for donation.

“I personally have delivered about 150 pounds of pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston on behalf of the Princeton Senior High School Key Club. I’ve been through the whole Charleston facility and see the great work they are doing in comforting families through meals and lodging at a time when they have sick kids in nearby hospitals. We thoroughly support the efforts of the PSHS Key Club to collect these items and encourage our fans to bring all their leftover pop tabs here to the stadium and put them into special clear plastic containers we will make available at several locations in the stadium. Collecting these pop tabs is a very simple way that everyone in the P-Rays family can help,” outlined P-Rays’ General Manager Jim Holland. He added that he has encountered many people that have utilized the services of a Ronald McDonald House location sometime during their lives.

The RMHC Pop Tab Program has already generated more than $4 million. The Pop Tab Collection Program was been established to allow individuals and businesses to collect soda pop tabs from aluminum cans and donate them to their local RMHC Chapter or Ronald McDonald’s House. Though it differs from program to program, for the most part, RMHC Chapters use the money received from recycling the tabs to help offset operational expenses or to sponsor or support programs.

So for the balance of this 2013 Appalachian League season, let’s get started and bring those used pop tabs to our collection points at Hunnicutt Field. St. Lucie Mets Hosting Baseball Camp July 29-31

The St. Lucie Mets have announced they will be holding their second Summer Baseball Camp from Monday July 29 through Wednesday July 31 at Tradition Field.

The camp is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day for kids seven through 13. Campers will receive instruction from St. Lucie Mets players and coaches, lunch each day, certificates of completion, and a ticket to all St. Lucie Mets game for the duration of the camp. Campers will have the opportunity to take the field with Mets players prior to the game on July 31 against the Tampa Yankees at 6:30 p.m.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA – The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and their Stadium Naming Rights Partner, LoanMart, will come together here in 2013 to name three (3) $1000 scholarship winners, as part of the LoanMart Scholarship Program.

Any student in the graduating class of a local high school, who is a citizen of the United States of America, and resident within the specific area of San Bernardino County, may file an application to be considered to receive one of the three scholarships to be awarded in August of 2013.

“LoanMart is committed to helping local students within the Rancho Cucamonga Community, by awarding these scholarships to encourage the pursuit of education and hard work,” said LoanMart Director of Marketing Colby Estes. “We want to show the people of San Bernardino Country that we are committed to the community on and off the field.”

Rainiers, Union Bank Homer For Area Youth

Cheney Stadium to host Field Day for Boys & Girls Clubs

TACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Rainiers have proudly teamed up with Union Bank in an effort to provide deserving members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound the opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind day at the ballpark this season.

For every home run hit by a Rainiers player during a home game this season, Union Bank has pledged to donate scholarships to the Lakewood Boys & Girls Club and the Henry T. Schatz Boys & Girls Club of Tacoma to attend the Field Day at Cheney Stadium held on Wednesday, July 24.

The Field Day event marks the second consecutive season the Rainiers and Union Bank have joined forces to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the South Puget Sound, and it serves as the latest example of the organizations’ desire to support area youth. In 2012, Union Bank sponsored a night at the ballpark that allowed Boys & Girls Club members and their families to an exclusive night out at a Rainiers game.

“We are proud to partner with the Rainiers to offer this once-in-a-lifetime experience to the great kids of our local Boys & Girls Clubs,” said Maryetta Williams, SVP and Region Manager for Union Bank. “Union Bank is committed to giving back to our communities, and there is no better way to do that than providing a positive experience that brings a smile to a child.”

Each Field Day participant is offered the opportunity to interact with and receive instruction from Rainiers players while taking part in baseball-themed stations set up throughout the ballpark. An exclusive autograph session will be held following the event, and each of the boys and girls in attendance will receive a catered lunch at the stadium.

The following night, Thursday, July 25, each Field Day participant and their parents will be treated to a night at the ballpark courtesy of Union Bank when the Rainiers host a 7 p.m. contest against the Tucson Padres.

Muckdogs to host youth camp!

Due to a tremendous response from the community, the Muckdogs 2013 Youth Baseball Camp held on August 6th and 7th is completely filled up and registration is now closed. We will accept any mailed registration forms post-marked on July 30th. For those who did not sign up in time, please keep an eye out for the Muckdogs 2nd Annual Youth Baseball Camp in 2014.

Join us at Dwyer Stadium August 6th, 7th and 8th for our youth baseball camp!

Kids aged 6-14 will receive two days of on field instruction from the Muckdogs players and coaches on August 6th & 7th from 9am – 12pm, then on August 8th campers will be able to come back to Dwyer for a private autograph signing with the team 30 minutes before the gates open (5:30pm) and then be recognized on the field prior to the Muckdogs game vs. the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Rays affiliate).

Campers will also recieve a special t-shirt not available in the team store, a camp photo, two tickets to the August 8th game as well as daily lunch, all for ONLY $70!

Tampa & Gulf Coast League Yankees Recognize HOPE Week

TAMPA, FL. – The Tampa Yankees & Gulf Coast League Yankees will be participating in HOPE Week (Helping Others Preserve & Excel) during the week of July 8-15, 2013. HOPE Week is a New York Yankees initiative designed to reach out to remarkable people who are worthy of recognition for their inspiring actions and support of their communities.

The Tampa based minor league Yankees players will be visiting the Police Athletic League: a registered non-profit 501c3 organization that is dedicated to providing affordable after school, summer and athletic opportunities to more than 500 Tampa Bay youth. The Children’s Home: a child-and family-centered organization that is positioned to care for struggling families and children seeking the comfort of a loving family. Warriors for Autism: a non-profit organization dedicated to enlightening, empowering and enriching the lives of families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Players will also pay a visit to patients and their families at local area hospitals including Shriners Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Tampa General Hospital.
