First Summer Camp Session July 10-13

SAN JOSE, CA – Wednesday, July 10 through Saturday, July 13 the San Jose Giants will host the first of three summer camp sessions at Municipal Stadium. The session will run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day and will focus on teaching and refining baseball skills for campers ages 8 through 14. The first summer camp session will feature a strong instructional staff filled with current and former collegiate baseball players. Fitness specialists from Crossfit Moxie, speed and vision trainers from Sensory Speed and nutrition personnel from Gatorade will also be on hand to coach and improve participants’ skills and health.

“I am extremely excited to get another season of San Jose Giants summer camps under way”, said Wilding. “The camps will be a great way for boys and girls alike to learn from some of the best instructors in the area and improve their abilities while having fun playing baseball.”

San Jose Giants Summer Camps are held on the field of historic Municipal Stadium, home to San Francisco Giants prospects for the past 26 seasons. During each session, players will move through hitting, throwing, catching, pitching, fielding and strength and conditioning drills to improve their level of play. RailRiders to Hold Baseball Equipment Drive Saturday

Adult Equipment to be Sent to Troops Overseas, Youth Donations to Local Little Leagues

Moosic, Pa. – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) will hold a baseball equipment drive to benefit both soldiers in Afghanistan and local little leagues. The drive will take place on Saturday, June 22, when the RailRiders host the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles) in a split doubleheader. Equipment will be accepted at both games with the first contest starting at 12:05 p.m. and game two getting underway at 7:05 p.m.

“We wanted to bring a little piece of home to our troops overseas,” said RailRiders community relations manager Rachel Mark. “Giving them the ability to participate in America’s favorite pastime is the least we can do for the men and women who have given so much.”

Donation bins will be set up at the front gates at PNC Field and will be manned by volunteers from The American Legion Post 665 in Dickson City until the third inning of each game. This will allow fans to drop off their gently-used equipment as they enter the ballpark. The drive is designed to bring a piece of home to our soldiers, and also make a direct impact in the NEPA community.

Following the game, all of the equipment that was donated will be sorted by the volunteers. The adult equipment will be shipped to soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, while the youth equipment will be donated throughout the NEPA area. The RailRiders will be accepting all baseball equipment that is in usable condition.

Gates will open up at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 22. The first 2,500 fans in game one will receive a free bat courtesy of Kost Tire & Auto. The gates for game two will open at 6 p.m. and the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo will perform after the nightcap. With no upper deck at PNC Field anymore, every seat in the ballpark provides the supreme views and intimacy that make minor league baseball so special at incredibly affordable prices. Loons, MBF Team Up for Summer Baseball Camps

Hands-on baseball clinics focus on the skill development of campers, coached by Loons

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Baseball Foundation (MBF) will begin this season’s Loons Summer Baseball Camps at Dow Diamond on June 24. The two-day camps will pair participants with professional players and coaches from the Great Lakes Loons in a strong baseball-learning environment.

Campers will learn various aspects of hitting, throwing, fielding and pitching while being instructed in the characteristics that define successful baseball players. The drills taught will be the same ones utilized by the coaches and player personnel of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Great Lakes Loons.

Loons Summer Baseball Camp Dates:

June 24 & 25 (ages 7-12) • July 24 & 25 (ages 7-12)

Camp instruction will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Campers will also receive a camp t-shirt and two tickets to a Loons game that will take place following the second day of instruction. All campers will be invited on the field for special pre-game recognition.

Each two-day Loons Summer Baseball Camp is $90 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Michigan Baseball Foundation. A portion of the entry fee is tax deductible.

Bandits announce two scholarship winners

The Quad Cities River Bandits awarded the two annual scholarships of the Bandit Scholars Program at the game Sunday at Modern Woodmen Park. During the fourth inning, team owner Dave Heller and Jennifer Lucier announced Holly Hoelting as the winner of the Bandit Scholarship and Elizabeth Baer as the winner of the Keith Lucier Memorial Scholarship.

Hoelting, a Bettendorf native and Pleasant Valley High School graduate entering Western Illinois University, is the first-ever winner of the annual Bandit Scholarship, which was added to the Bandit Scholars Program a year ago. Baer, a Bettendorf native and Bettendorf High School graduate entering the University of Iowa, won the Keith Lucier Memorial Scholarship, given annually since the River Bandits introduced the Bandit Scholars Program in 2009. Each scholarship pays for the entire first year of tuition for the annual recipient.

“Giving out these scholarships is the most enjoyable thing I do as owner of the River Bandits, and I am so proud, on behalf of the organization and the Quad Cities community, to present these scholarships to Holly and Elizabeth,” said team owner Dave Heller. “Each of these young women have demonstrated incredible talent, hard work, dedication and a passion for community service, and I am confident they will be outstanding representatives of the Bandit Scholars Program and the Quad Cities in their immensely promising futures.”

River Bandits owners Dave Heller and Bob Herrfeldt founded the Bandit Scholars Program in 2009, beginning with the Keith Lucier Memorial Scholarship and expanding with the Bandit Scholarship last year. Awarded annually to a Quad Cities area high school senior, each scholarship includes a summer internship with the River Bandits following the winner’s first year of college.

The Keith Lucier Memorial Scholarship pays for the entire first year of tuition at the University of Iowa for the annual recipient and is named in honor of the late Keith Lucier. Lucier was a graduate of Bettendorf High School and the University of Iowa. He was River Bandits Assistant General Manager in 2008 and a former employee of the Quad-City Times. Lucier passed away in 2009, and the scholarship has been awarded annually to one Quad Cities area high school senior since its inception. The Bandit Scholarship pays the entire first year of tuition for one student each year at either Western Illinois University or Black Hawk College.

“I am incredibly excited and grateful to receive the Keith Lucier Memorial Scholarship,” Baer said. “This is an exhilirating moment and a reminder of the importance of paying it forward and being caring and giving throughout my future.”

Baer hopes to pursue a communications degree with emphasis on public advocacy. In high school, she has been involved in National Student Council of Excellence, National Honor Society, Raising Student Voice and Participation, FBLA, Best Buddies, SAIL Program, Teens for Tomorrow Philanthropy Group, volleyball, and several volunteer activities.

“It is humbling and eye-opening for me to receive the Bandit Scholarship,” Hoelting said. “This scholarship award and internship through the Bandit Scholars Program is a great opportunity to continue giving and helping others as I begin my college career.”

Hoelting hopes to pursue a degree in physical therapy. She has worked in the Red Apple Child Care Center, Athletic Booster Club Ad Sales, the Pleasant Valley School District and Pleasant Valley Softball Camp, where she teaches the sport to young children. A five-sport athlete in high school, Hoelting will play softball for Western Illinois University.

Both scholarships are funded by fan donations and fund-raising efforts by the River Bandits and the team’s ownership. Fundraising events include the annual Frost Fest, Bandits Race to Home 5K and Bandit Scholars Tournament. Fans can send donations for the scholarship fund to Modern Woodmen Park. One hundred percent of every donation goes to fund the scholarships.

Naturals, Great Day Farms Partner on Free Baseball Clinic

Kids invited to signup for FREE clinic prior to June 30th game

Great Day Farms, along with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals players and coaches are teaming up for the sixth annual Youth Baseball Clinic at Arvest Ballpark, to be held from 2 until 4 P.M. on Sunday, June 30th prior to that night’s 6:00pm game against the Frisco RoughRiders.

The clinic is open to children ages 6-12 and will cover instruction of key baseball fundamentals, including hitting, fielding, pitching, and baserunning. All participants will be given a complimentary general admission ticket to that evening’s game against the RoughRiders, and the first 300 children to the clinic will also receive a free Great Day Farms t-shirt.

An autograph session with select Naturals players will follow the instruction portion of the clinic and will occur along the 1st base side of the concourse lasting approximately 15 minutes.

There is a sign-up form located on the Naturals website, nwanaturals.com, under the community menu that interested parents can print, fill out, and then fax or mail in to register their children for the clinic. The youth baseball clinic is also open to local youth coaches as they may also fill out the form and fax in their roster to register their entire teams. The deadline to register for the event is Friday, June 28th, but participants are encouraged to sign up quickly, as previous seasons events filled to capacity prior to the deadline. On June 21-22, the Green Country Chevy Dealers will host a free instructional clinic at ONEOK Field for youth baseball players in the Tulsa area. Coached by the Tulsa Drillers, participants will learn the essentials of throwing, fielding and hitting.

The clinic is one of over 200 that Chevrolet is hosting nationwide this year as part of the Chevrolet Youth Baseball Program. Chevrolet has sponsored free, public baseball clinics for children across the country since 2006.

Bristol White Sox announce Library Night and Kids’ Book Drive

The Bristol White Sox are glad to announce their First Annual Library Night and Kids’ Book Drive, scheduled for Monday, July 8, during their game with the Danville Braves at Boyce Cox Field in Bristol.

Fans will be encouraged to bring new or used childrens’ books to the ballpark that evening to donate to the Bristol Public Library. One lucky book donor that evening will win an autographed bat from the Sox.

“We are excited to partner with the Bristol Public Library to encourage members of our community to join us in helping young people learn to enjoy reading,” said Mahlon Luttrell, General Manager of the Bristol White Sox.

All of the donated books will be delivered to the Library on July 10 by Sox players and Dingbat, the official Bristol White Sox mascot, as part of the Library’s Summer Reading Program. The players will read to the children, and Dingbat will distribute free tickets to Bristol Sox games.

In addition, participants in the Library’s Summer Reading Program will also be eligible to win additional free tickets to see the Sox play by reading a certain number of books during the summer. More information on this program can be obtained at the Library. The Sox will also present an autographed bat to the participating child who reads the most books during the summer.

The Bristol White Sox professional baseball team, also known as the Bristol Sox, is the Advanced Rookie affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, competes in the 10-team Appalachian League, and is operated by Bristol Baseball, Inc., a locally-based non-profit organization.

Marlins, FSL continue scholarship program for 2013

168 scholarships have been awarded over 14 years

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 30, 2013) – The Miami Marlins and Florida State League, for the fourteenth straight year, will fund the Florida State League Scholarship Program for the 2013 baseball season.

The scholarships have a monetary value of $1,500 each and will be presented to a student employee, child or grandchild of an employee of Florida State League teams. Selection will be based on grades, leadership capabilities and job performance. A total of 168 scholarships have been awarded to qualified applicants since the inception of the program.

The Miami Marlins provide a generous contribution to the scholarship program. The purpose of the program is to encourage and reward our school age applicants and to send a message that an education is the key to success in life.

Knights and CHS to Hold Health Fair Friday

(Fort Mill, SC) — The Charlotte Knights and Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) will host their fifth annual health fair this Friday, May 31st at Knights Stadium. Fans will have the chance to visit with medical experts from multiple facilities in the area on topics of health, wellness, fitness and lifestyle improvements. The health fair is free with a ticket to that night’s game.

Medical experts will be on-site to answer questions and provide general health information and giveaways for attendees.

“The Charlotte Knights along with Carolinas HealthCare System are committed to making a positive contribution to the health and well-being of all of our fans,” said Knights Vice President of Sales, Chris Semmens. “The Knights are proud to host this event for the 5th season.”

Over the past four years, CHS and the Charlotte Knights have worked together to educate more than 36,400 fans at Knights Stadium on preventative medical practices.

Friday’s game also features a retro baseball card set giveaway to the first 1,000 fans and the Knights will wear their 1990 “throwback” jerseys. Fisher Cats Name 2013 Scholarship Winners

Twelve student-athletes will receive $2,500 scholarships

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Fisher Cats Foundation have named their 2013 Scholar-Athlete Scholarship winners. Ten graduates from New Hampshire high schools and two from northern Massachusetts have all earned a $2,500 scholarship based on their athletic and academic achievements in high school, and will be celebrated in an on-field ceremony prior to the Fisher Cats’ game on Thursday, July 17, against the Portland Sea Dogs at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

“These students have had remarkable high schools careers, and we are proud to recognize them as our Class of 2013 scholarship winners,” said Art Solomon, Fisher Cats owner and chairman of the Fisher Cats Foundation board. “Not only have they excelled in school and on the fields and courts, but each has displayed a commitment to making their communities better places to live. We congratulate these students and look forward to recognizing them at the ballpark in July.”

The scholarship recipients were selected based upon criteria of academic excellence, athletic achievement, and active citizenship in the community. Money for the scholarships was raised through several Foundation endeavors, most notably the Granite State Baseball Dinner held annually in November.

The Fisher Cats Foundation will award three special scholarships among the twelve – the Swymer Family Scholarship, offered annually to a student who has overcome a barrier and gone on to college; the Chris Carpenter Scholarship, named in honor of New Hampshire native and National League Cy Young Award Winner Chris Carpenter; and the Easter Seals Veterans Count Scholarship, presented to a New Hampshire graduate whose parent or guardian is an active, reserve, or veteran member of the United States Military.

A full list of this year’s winners is below.

*Tanner Nichols (Hinsdale Senior High School/Hinsdale, N.H.) – Tanner was a four sport athlete, competing in basketball, soccer, track and field, and cross country. He was also vice president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Hinsdale PTSA, and a chemistry and math tutor. Tanner will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

*Elizabeth Conway (Manchester Central High School/Manchester, N.H.) – Elizabeth was on the cross country and Nordic skiing teams. She also wrote for the school newspaper, volunteered as a track and field coach for Special Olympics, worked for Amnesty International, and tutored in math, science, history, English, Spanish, and the violin. Elizabeth will attend Brown University.

*Kevin Clougherty (Somersworth High School/Somersworth, N.H.) – Kevin is the recipient of the Swymer Family Scholarship. He played football, basketball, and baseball, and will be the first member of his entire family to graduate from high school. Kevin will attend Keene State College.

*Mitchell Jurius (Inter-Lakes High School/Meredith, N.H.) – Mitchell played a sport all three seasons of his high school career, being named a captain of four of those teams. He was also on the Student Athlete Leadership Committee, a member of the National Honor Society, and a Vacation Bible School teacher. Mitchell will attend Roberts Wesleyan College.

*Nathan Garner (Nashua High School North/Nashua, N.H.) – Nathan is the winner of this year’s Chris Carpenter Scholarship Award. He was a member of the swim team, as well as a student columnist for the Nashua Telegraph. He was a member of the Student Senate, a volunteer swimming coach for Special Olympics, and a member of four honor societies – National, Science, Spanish, and Math. Nathan will attend Bowdoin College.

*Richard Holt (Portsmouth High School/Portsmouth, N.H.) – Richard played football, basketball, and baseball, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Richard will attend the University of New Hampshire, where he will continue his football career.

*Romario Bailey (Stevens High School/Claremont, N.H.) – Romario is the 2013 winner of the Easter Seals Veterans Count Scholarship. He was on the track and field, soccer, and football teams, and he was the founder of the school’s Sports Management Club and a member of the National Technical Honor Society. Romario, originally from Jamaica, will attend the University of Vermont.

*Rylee Weinstein (Sunapee Senior High School/Sunapee, N.H.) – Rylee was a member of the soccer, basketball, softball, and ski teams. She was also the vice president of the Student Council and a member of the Harvard Model Congress. Rylee is undecided on her college selection.

*Melissa Peart (Farmington Senior High School/Farmington, N.H.) – Melissa is the reigning New Hampshire Division III Player of the Year in volleyball, and played basketball for Farmington. She also volunteered at the Rochester food kitchen. Melissa is undecided on her college selection.

*Kathareeya Tonyai (Conant High School/Jaffrey, N.H.) – Kathareeya was on the track and field and field hockey teams, and was also the vice president of the National Honor Society. Kathareeya, whose parents are from Thailand, will attend Trinity College.

*Lori Merlo (Bedford High School/Bedford, Mass.) – Lori ran cross country and track, and was the founder and president of the school’s Red Cross Club. She is also a Eucharist minister and volunteered for the Miracle League of Massachusetts and the Bedford Food Pantry. Lori will attend Marist College.

*Nicholas Clark (Nashoba Valley Technical High School/Groton, Mass.) – Nicholas was on the football and track and field teams, and volunteered for Homes for Out Troops. An Eagle Scout, Nicholas will attend Ithaca College.

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats established the Fisher Cats Foundation to be a catalyst for the betterment of communities statewide by supporting youth programs that encourage education and promote healthy living. Through the generous support of players, employees, sponsors, and fans, the Fisher Cats Foundation continuously works to make a positive impact throughout New Hampshire and north central Massachusetts. As the primary funding source for the team’s philanthropy, the Fisher Cats Foundation supports a wide variety of non-profit organizations and coordinates several fundraising programs and events. Ports To Host Challenger Little League Game May 29

STOCKTON, Calif.-Before the Ports face the Inland Empire 66ers in the final game of the three-game homestand, they will participate in the third annual Challenger Little League game starting at 5:30 p.m. Participating in the game will be Challenger little leaguers from the California District 8 Little League who play on Western Little League’s field in Stockton. The game will give all Challenger participants the chance to take some swings on the field at Banner Island, as well as interact with Ports players.

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide.

NY-Penn League Charitable Foundation Announces 2013 Scholarship Competition

Graduating high school seniors from each of the league’s 14 markets competing for over $10,000

The Class-A Short-Season New York-Penn League and its member clubs are proud to announce that the league’s philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets.

Now in its fifth year, the 2013 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligble. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

The scholarship contest will consist of two stages – a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the divisional/final round. The 14 finalists will be separated by the division of the team they represent. The winning application from each of the NYPL’s three divisions (McNamara, Pinckney and Stedler) will receive the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists will receive a $250 book award.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are committed to giving back to our local communities and our annual scholarship competition has become one of the anchors of our community outreach program over the past five years,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “In addition to selecting those students who meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, we enjoy being able to assist those who have enjoyed many special memories with their hometown team over the years.”

The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation initiated the scholarship program in 2009 as a way to assist high school seniors from within our league’s footprint who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but have also demonstrated the positive benefits their local NYPL club has had on their life,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “The Foundation is pleased to have this scholarship program in place and to support our 14 member clubs in their year-round community outreach efforts.”

High school seniors interested in entering the 2013 Scholarship Contest can obtain the official application from their local NYPL club, or by visiting the league’s official website, New York-Penn League.com.

The deadline to submit applications to the nearest NYPL team is June 28, 2013. Each club’s winner, including the three $2,500 scholarship recipients, will be selected in late July and honored at a game in August.

The New York-Penn League and its 14 member clubs created the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in 2003. The mission of the Foundation is to provide focus and support for the collective and individual charitable and community efforts of the New York-Penn League, its Clubs, and their staff.

2013 Adenhart Memorial Scholarship winner Thomas Eiler

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Kernels Foundation will present Thomas Eilers as the winner of the 2013 Nick Adenhart Memorial Scholarship before the Kernels game with Peoria on Sunday, June 16th.

Thomas is a 2013 graduate of Cedar Rapids Prairie HS where his school activities, academic accomplishments and baseball accomplishments were quite impressive, making him an excellent choice for the scholarship. Thomas plans on attending the University of Iowa to major in mathematics and education.

Nick Adenhart was a bright young pitcher who played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2006, and was a rising star in the Los Angeles Angels organization. Only hours after Nick’s 2009 season debut on the mound for the Angels, a drunk driver tragically killed him on April 9, 2009 at age 22.

Nick’s family continues to honor him with the awarding of a $1,000 scholarship in his memory. The Kernels Foundation is privileged to administer the scholarship on behalf of Nick’s family.

The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, May 25th to open a six game home stand with games against Burlington and Clinton.

Gwinnett Braves Award April Grant to Gwinnett County Special Olympics

“Take Me Out to a Ball Game” themed grant will help fund sports programs for disabled youth

Gwinnett BravesThe Gwinnett Braves have awarded their $1,000 grant for the month of April to Gwinnett County Special Olympics. The “Take Me Out to a Ball Game” themed grant, aimed at assisting organizations that promote youth athletics and activities, will help fund Special Olympics’ sports programs for youth with intellectual disabilities.

Gwinnett-County-Special-Olympics-logoThe Special Olympics program was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver and provides year-round training and athletic competition for more than one million athletes in nearly 150 countries and all 50 states in the United States. Gwinnett County Special Olympics is the agency that operates the Special Olympics program in Gwinnett County. Their program supports more than 2,000 athletes of all ages including school-age children with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy of sports participation.

The funds from the grant awarded by the Gwinnett Braves will help Gwinnett County Special Olympics in its continued mission to provide uniforms, transportation, sports facilities and equipment for youth athletes specifically in Gwinnett County. The Gwinnett Braves and Gwinnett County Special Olympics have had a strong partnership for the past five years, including an annual “Best Buddies” clinic where disabled youth learn baseball skills from G-Braves players at Coolray Field.

“The Special Olympics mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded in 1968 by Eunice Shriver,” said Karen O’Connor, Fundraising & Outreach Chairman of Gwinnett County Special Olympics. “Through the power of sport, Special Olympics strives to create a better world by fostering the acceptance and inclusion of all people. Our 2,100 school age athletes, parents and volunteers are so appreciative for the Gwinnett Braves’ support.”
