HOPE Week Headlines Seven-Game Homestand

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Charleston RiverDogs are back at home for a seven-game homestand from Tuesday, July 15 through Monday, July 21. HOPE Week 2014, an annual New York Yankees outreach initiative, runs through the first five days of this homestand. Saturday, July 19 will be full of fun as the RiverDogs will host Disco Demolition 2: You Better Belieb It along with Military Appreciation Night and a Bill Veeck Bobble-Leg Giveaway.

 

Warriors-4-WarriorsTuesday, July 15, 7:05 pm: HOPE Week 2014 begins as the RiverDogs partner with Warriors 4 Warriors. It is Harris Teeter 2-for-$20 Date Night, presented by Nash FM. Couples that show a VIC Card at the box office will receive two tickets to the game, two tacos, two fountain drinks and a nacho tray for just $20. It is also Choose Your Knight Night. Upon entering the ballpark, fans can choose one of three colored cards which correspond with three knights that will compete throughout the night in various contests. The knight with the most total points will be the winner, and fans who selected that color may turn in their card to receive a ticket voucher for an upcoming RiverDogs game.

Wednesday, July 16, 7:05 pm: Day Two of HOPE Week 2014 featureSC-Youth-Advocate-Programs South Carolina Youth Advocate Program. HealthSouth Senior Wednesday, sponsored by MeTV, offers a food voucher for all senior citizens (age 65 & older) who enter the park before 7 pm. The voucher is good for a free hot dog, a bag of chips and a 16-ounce fountain drink. The RiverDogs are also hosting “Dogs with a Cause” to support The Spokes Group Charleston. It is also a Guaranteed Wins-Day, so if the RiverDogs are not victorious, all fans in attendance may use their tickets to get into the next Wednesday home game for free.

Lowcountry Food BankThursday, July 17, 7:05 pm: HOPE Week 2014 continues with Lowcountry Food Bank’s Food Works Program. It is also Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, courtesy of 95SX, with $1 drafts and DJ Natty Heavy in the Ashley View Pub. Wild Wing Café will also sponsor a wing-eating contest in the Ashley View Pub. The RiverDogs are also continuing their Thursday concert series, which is presented by Palmetto Brewery and Awendaw Green. Cheap Hats and Bourbon, an acoustic band that plays covers and original songs, will be playing adjacent to the Beer Garden.

Canines-for-ServiceFriday, July 18, 7:05 pm: The RiverDogs will partner with Mighty Mack and Scout on Day Four of HOPE Week 2014. ISHPI Red Shirt Friday, presented by 103.5 WEZL, encourages fans to wear red to the game and save $1 off your ticket purchase at the box office or donate that dollar to Canines for Veterans and Folds of Honor. United States Air Force Night will be celebrated as well. There will be a pregame awards ceremony for the annual Youth Baseball Camp, which is presented by The Kickin’ Chicken. The RiverDogs will wear red jerseys on Friday and will receive help from Folds-of-Honor2Titus the Wonder Dog, who will serve as a batdog for an inning. Miller and Coors present $3 Aluminum Pint Night in the Ashley View Pub. Stick around following the contest for another stellar fireworks display over the scenic Ashley River.

Field-to-FamilySaturday, July 19, 6:05 pm: HOPE Week 2014 wraps up, featuring Fields to Families. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Bill Veeck Bobble-Leg from WCBD Channel 2. In honor of Military Appreciation Night, presented by ISHPI, all active and retired military members and their immediate families can get into the game for free. The RiverDogs are also hosting Disco Demolition 2: You Better Belieb It. Fans that bring Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus merchandise and memorabilia will get a $1 ticket. All of the donated items will be destroyed in a postgame demolition on the field. Social Media Saturday invites fans to use Facebook and Twitter to send the RiverDogs requests for songs, promotions and other ballpark features. It is also West Ashley Night at The Joe. Barefoot Night includes a Barefoot wine sampling around the Beer Garden.

CCPRCSunday, July 20, 5:05 pm: CCPRC and Crews Subaru Kids Club Sunday, sponsored by Y102.5, offers free admission for all members of Charlie’s Kids Club. Parking is free, and all children will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, a fountain drink and chips for Kids Eat Free from Pepsi. Pirates and Princesses Night is also set for Sunday. Children can make their own crown and treasure at the game while pirates from Blackbeard’s Cove roam the ballpark. An ice princess pregame meet and greet and Disney gift card giveaways are also scheduled. All fans can enjoy pregame catch on the field and postgame autographs with the RiverDogs. Patriots Point and its mascot, Scrappy, will be on hand for Sunday’s game as well. Charleston will wear its stylish seersucker uniforms on Seersucker Sunday. Fans that wear seersucker to the game can save $1 off their ticket purchase at the box office or donate that dollar to the Preservation Society of Charleston and the Historic Charleston Foundation. Celebrity “Smokin’ Chef” Aaron Siegel from Home Team BBQ will serve smoked pork belly pastrami with pickled local slaw and smoked Poblano mustard on a brioche bun at the RiverDogs’ new meat smoker.

Monday, July 21, 12:05 pm: The homestand closes with a special 12:05 pm start time, setting up the Business-Man’s Special and Service Industry Day. Play hooky from work or ask the RiverDogs to send an intern to your business and cover your shift so you can come to the contest. The Business-Man’s Special offers $7 upper reserve tickets. Members of the service industry will be rewarded for their hospitality with $5 general admission tickets for Monday’s matinee. Coors and Magic 107.3 present Dollar Dogs and Beers Night in the Ashley View Pub. There will also be an Old Mexico DVD Giveaway at the homestand finale.

This seven-game RiverDogs homestand is the longest home stretch in July at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. RiverDogs Again Join Yankees HOPE Week Initiative

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Charleston RiverDogs are once again proud to partner with their parent organization, the New York Yankees, for the HOPE Week Initiative. The initiative runs from July 15-19, and RiverDogs players, coaches and front office staff will make appearances throughout the Lowcountry during the five-day outreach.

This will be the sixth year in which the 27-time World Series Champion New York Yankees have held their HOPE Week Initiative. HOPE is the acronym for “Helping Others Persevere and Excel,” and this will be the third time that the RiverDogs will bring the concept to Charleston. Contributing sponsors this year include Harris Teeter and Tideline Tours.

HOPE-Week“We are excited about the opportunity to partner once again with the New York Yankees for such a fantastic cause,” said RiverDogs Director of Community Relations Lauren Allio. “It is a great way for us to continue to be active in the community and to recognize some truly amazing people.”

“This initiative in which we’re partnering with the Yankees has been part of our makeup for several years as we have hosted ‘Dogs With A Cause’ at every Monday home game and the Hope Initiative takes it to another level,” said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. “Part of our overall marketing initiative stems from our being very active in our community, and this actively involves the players in which our fans will certainly enjoy.”

The RiverDogs will participate in events every day from July 15-19 to garner awareness for highlighted causes, individuals and organizations. In addition, every day over the five-day period, a different non-profit organization and/or family in need will receive an once-in-a-lifetime experience of interaction with RiverDogs players and an evening of fun at a RiverDogs game.

The RiverDogs and all of the Yankees’ affiliates received a citation from the President’s Volunteer Service Award for last year’s HOPE Week.

The schedule includes:

Warriors-4-Warriors·         Tuesday, July 15: Warriors 4 Warriors Foundation

o   Warriors 4 Warriors Foundation provides emotional support and connection to women who have been diagnoses with breast cancer, are going through treatment and are survivors. They focus on quality of life for these women, their families, children and caretakers through their various programs.

o   Players will help put together care packages for women currently receiving treatment, deliver those care packages and help with a make-over through the Warriors Wear Lipstick program.

 

SC-Youth-Advocate-Program·         Wednesday, July 16: Therapeutic Foster Parents, SC Youth Advocate Program

o   Carolyn & Martin Meier serve as the therapeutic foster parents for several years, serving the long-term needs of numerous medically fragile children in foster care.

o   Players will join the Meiers and a social worker on a Dolphin Adventure boat tour through the Lowcountry marshes.

Lowcountry Food Bank·         Thursday, July 17: Lowcountry Food Bank

o   The Lowcountry Food Bank’s primary mission is to lead the fight against hunger in the area with a vision to end hunger in coastal South Carolina.

o   Players will work side-by-side with this summer’s Food Works apprentices to prep meals for Meals on Wheels.

·         Friday, July 18: Mighty Mack and Scout

o   Mighty Mack is a six-year-old boy who suffers from a rare form of leukemia. His four-year-old sister, Scout, is his bone marrow donor.

o   Players will surprise Mack and Scout with a fun day at the ballpark, joining in on batting practice and other pregame activities.

Field-to-Family·         Saturday, July 19: Fields to Families

o   Fields to Families is a nonprofit organization that helps the hungry in the Charleston community gain access to nutritious fruits and vegetables. When local farmers have fruit and vegetables that they can spare, either because they can’t harvest them in time or because they simply can’t use them, they contact Fields to Families.

o   Players will go to the participating farms and pick/harvest unwanted produce that will then make their way to Lowcountry organizations that feed the hungry.

Autism Awareness Night

Tampa-YankeesThe Tampa Yankees will support Autism Awareness as they host their first annual “Autism Night” on Saturday, July 26 at George M. Steinbrenner Field against the Fort Myers Miracle. The game will begin at 6:00 pm & the gates will open to all fans at 5:00 pm.

On “Autism Night,” custom jerseys will be worn by the players & coaches that will be auctioned off during the game. Auction winners will have the opportunity to get their jersey signed by the player or coach who wore it after the game. The auction will benefit The Inspire Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring music and the arts to ALL children with special needs. Fans will also have the chance to win a 2014 Ford F150 STX if they enter the raffle at the game.

The-Inspire-FoundationSaturday, July 26th will also be Friends & Family Night, where Family 4-Packs will be available for $38. Included are four reserved tickets, hot dogs, bags of chips, sodas, TY caps & two passes to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Family 4-Packs can only be purchased at the Steinbrenner Field Box Office.

Before the game, kids will have the opportunity to run the bases from 5-5:15 pm & player autographs will be given on the concourse from 5:10-5:30 pm. A face painter will be on the concourse as well from 5-7:00 pm.

Tickets are $4 for general admission, $6 for reserved seating and can be purchased at the George M. Steinbrenner Field Box Office.

RailRiders Announce HOPE Week Activities

Week-Long Festivities Commence Sunday, July 6

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) are proud to announce that beginning on Sunday, July 6 the RailRiders will join the New York Yankees in support of HOPE (Helping Others Persevere and Excel) Week 2014, a unique week-long communal program that brings to light extraordinary stories intended to inspire individuals into action in their own communities.

HOPE-WeekInitiated in 2009 and now in its fifth campaign in NEPA, HOPE Week is rooted in the fundamental belief that acts of goodwill provide hope and encouragement to more than just the recipient of the gesture. Each day from Sunday, July 6 through Friday, July 11 members of the RailRiders front office staff or club will reach out personally to connect with an organization, cause or individual. 2014 marks the third straight year that each of the Yankees’ six U.S.-based affiliates will participate in the program, making the initiative one that the entire organization proudly stands behind.

Voluntary-Action-Center-logoHOPE Week begins with the RailRiders’ annual food drive on Sunday, July 6. Patrons are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the 7:05 p.m. contest against the Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox) in exchange for one lawn seat in the NEPA Honda Homer Zone. SWB has partnered with the Voluntary Action Center which will distribute the collected items to agencies and food pantries around the region. The RailRiders will respond by honoring Voluntary Action Center’s ‘Volunteers of the Year’ with a pre-game ceremony on the field.

PA-Dept-of-Military-&-Veterans-AffairsScranton/Wilkes-Barre coaches, players and front office staff will trek to the Gino Merli Veterans Center in Scranton on Monday, July 7 to participate in a full day of inspiring visits. The RailRiders will visit residents in their rooms and see who has the best stuff in some games of Wii baseball. The visit includes a social filled with baseball-themed snacks.

Vs-Cancer-logoFortune favors the bald? We will find out on Tuesday, July 8 when the RailRiders join the Vs. Cancer Foundation with a night at PNC Field committed to raising money for childhood cancer research. Half of the funds raised will be donated to the National Childhood Cancer Research Foundation and the other half will be donated locally. RailRiders players and front office staff will shave their heads during and after the game to help raise awareness. A number of names are scheduled to participate including RHP Danny Burawa, SHP Pat Venditte, C Francisco Arcia and team president/GM Rob Crain. The RailRiders have set a team goal of $10,000 for the event.

Childrens-Miracle-Network-Hospital-2014On Wednesday, July 9, Children’s Miracle Network kids and their families will journey into the RailRiders’ home clubhouse for a personal meet-and-greet with players before the game.

The RailRiders head to the NEPA Boys and Girls Club on Thursday, July 10. Boys-&-Girls-club-of-AmericSWB has partnered with Combined Forces Mobile Laser Tag for the fun and excitement of laser tag. The event includes inflatable barricades, walls and laser guns. RailRiders’ players and staff will participate in the team sport with club members from 10 a.m.-11 a.m.

The big league baseball dream propels the RailRiders each day. On Friday, July Make-A-Wish11, the RailRiders will seek to help dreams of a different variety. HOPE Week concludes with Princess and Pirate Night at PNC Field as the RailRiders partner with the Make-A-Wish foundation to honor two deserving kids. Limos, along with staff dressed in their best princess and pirate attire, will escort the two honorees to PNC Field for special on-field recognition and ceremonial first pitches. Each child will receive a complimentary princess and pirate costume and promotional package.

HOPE Week is just a part of the RailRiders’ community outreach this season, and the RailRiders look forward to continuing their involvement both during and after HOPE Week. Everyday Heroes Night on July 3rd

Tampa-YankeesOn Thursday, July 3rd the Tampa Yankees will host Everyday Heroes Night at George M. Steinbrenner Field to honor all those who work to keep our nation safe as they play the Lakeland Flying Tigers at 7:00 pm. The gates open at 5:00pm to all fans.

All active & retired Military, EMT Specialists, Firefighters & Police Officers will receive FREE ADMISSION if they show up with a valid I.D.

In honor of Everyday Heroes Night, each of the players will wear a customized jersey, which will be auctioned off during the game in a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the Everyday Heroes non-profit organization and each purchaser will have the opportunity to have their jersey signed and meet the player it was worn by.

Everyday-Heros-USABefore the game, fans will enjoy a Food Truck Rally with Tasty Stacy, PAO Truck, Kona Ice, Hot Mess, Disco Donuts, Sarges BBQ, PaniniRiffic and Escomo.

Everyday Heroes Night, lands on a Thursday and you know what that means…Throwback Thursday! Instead of paying $6 for reserved seating or $ 4 for general admission, fans will be able to purchase tickets like it’s 1994. Reserved seating will only cost $2 and general admission will be just $1. In addition to our reduced ticket pricing , fans can enjoy 14 oz. Draft Beers for $2, small sodas for $1 & half price nachos from 5-7 pm, presented by 98.7 The Fan.

After the game, fans will enjoy a fireworks display as a celebration of Independence Day, courtesy of Budweiser.

The RiverDogs, fresh off their All-Star break, will face the Kannapolis Intimidators with the first pitch set for 6:05 pm.

With proceeds going to the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Storm Eye Institute and their on-going fight to prevent the loss of sight, the RiverDogs’ silent auction begins when the gates open at 5 pm and concludes at the bottom of the 6th inning.

Tampa Yankees Recognize HOPE Week

Tampa-YankeesThe Tampa Yankees will be participating in HOPE Week (Helping Others Preserve & Excel) during the week of June 19-24, 2014. HOPE Week is a New York Yankees initiative designed to reach out to remarkable people who are worthy of recognition for their inspiring actions and support of their communities.

The Tampa Yankees players and staff will be visiting patients and their families at local area hospitals including:

  • Tampa General Hospital
  • St. Joseph’s Hospital
  • All Children’s Hospital

HOPE-WeekThe Tampa based minor league Yankees players will also be visiting the Children’s Home: a child-and family-centered organization that is positioned to care for struggling families and children seeking the comfort of a loving family.

Where-Love-GrowsWhere Love Grows will be hosting a Victoria’s Good Table dinner in the Yankees pavilion at Steinbrenner Field. Where Love Grows is a Tampa based non-profit organization. They wanted to partner with the Tampa Yankees to benefit the children of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay in celebration of HOPE Week. Staten Island Yankees to Host Megan’s Lemonade Stand to Support Wounded Warriors Project

Staten-Island-YankeesOn Sunday, June 15, the Staten Island Yankees are partnering with the Ajello’s to host a fundraising event at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George. All funds generated will go to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Megan’s Lemonade Stand will start when the gates at Richmond County Bank Ballpark open at 3 p.m. Staten Island Yankees fans will be able to donate to the lemonade that is prepared by Megan Ajello to raise money for the Wounded Warriors. Also, the first 2,500 fans in the ballpark will receive a “Megan’s Lemonade Stand” souvenir cup.

The lemonade stand for charity started over five years ago in the Ajello driveway. It was the idea of Megan’s sister, Erin. Erin decided the first lemonade stand would benefit West Shore Little League, which was the first Staten Island Little League to include physically disabled children, the Challengers. The 2008 Megan’s Lemonade stand went to the Strong Kids Campaign for the YMCA. The Ajello family, including parents Linda and Danny, has been members of the South Shore YMCA since 2000. The lemonade stands continued to make thousands of dollars for charities over the years. In 2011, Linda Ajello nominated Megan as a HOPE Week nominee as part of the New York Yankees HOPE Week initiative. The New York Yankees were impressed with Megan’s determination. Megan has cerebral palsy, has a seizure disorder, cannot walk, and has gone for more than five major operations, including a spinal fusion which placed metal rods and over 37 screws in her spine. Megan has never let that stop her, and she is always smiling. The New York Yankees not only picked Megan as their nominee for July 28, 2011, they made Megan’s Lemonade Stand for charity famous. The generous New York Yankees built a lemonade stand that is truly accessible for Megan, supported the Special Olympics and also the Seton Foundation for Education.

Welcome Home Lieutenant Pelletier

Prior to their 5:00p.m. game vs. Jupiter, the Tampa Yankees were honored to welcome home Lieutenant Matthew Pelletier.

Joe Pelletier, the father of Lieutenant Pelletier, thought he was visiting Steinbrenner Field and throwing out the game’s first pitch as a potential Tampa Yankees sponsor with his company, AmeriLife. He had no idea he was about to see his son, who was on the receiving end of the pitch and dressed in a full Tampa Yankees uniform, complete with catcher’s gear.

Lieutenant Pelletier had not seen his father since August 2013, before deploying for the U.S. Army.

Charleston-RiverDogsThere aren’t many things more American than baseball, cold beer, and our Military. That trio will come together in a big way this year as the Charleston RiverDogs and Palmetto Brewery have partnered to help raise funds for military themed charity Operation Homefront.

The Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees will be the first venue in Charleston to sell Homefront IPA, and all proceeds benefit Operation Homefront. The RiverDogs will sell this special beer with the slogan “Hops for Heroes” during their home game against the Asheville Tourists on Thursday, May 29 to coincide with Military Appreciation Night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Operation-HomefrontHomefront IPA was developed in 2011 by Fremont Brewing Company of Seattle, Wash., and Center of the Universe Brewing Company of Ashland, Va., in order to raise money and awareness for Operation Homefront.

Aged on Louisville Slugger maple bats, this specially-made craft beer does more than just quench one’s thirst as it improves the lives of our soldiers. Homefront IPA is a unique charity beer in that 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to Operation Homefront. One of the solid Maple Bats will be auctioned off during the game to raise money as well.

“We feel certain that our fans that enjoy a craft beer will certainly enjoy Homefront IPA while assisting our military troops and their families,” said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. “We’re proud to have first rights and to be the only site in the state of South Carolina to get this beer.”

“Palmetto Brewing Company is honored to support this very worthy cause with the Charleston RiverDogs,” said Ed Falkenstein, Founder, Palmetto Brewing Company. “We recognize the service of our men and women in the Armed Forces and respect the sacrifice they and their families make every day. Donating 100 percent of our proceeds to this project is a small acknowledgment. Enjoy a Homefront IPA at the ballpark with food and friends.”

Palmetto Brewing, located in downtown Charleston, is one of only two Southeastern distributors (Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Fla. is the other) that dispense Homefront IPA. Other providers include Center of the Universe Brewing Company of Ashland, Va.; Fremont Brewing Company of Seattle, Wash.; Sly Fox of Pottstown, Pa.; Perennial Artisan Ales of St. Louis, Mo.; Saint Arnold Brewing Company of Houston; Left Hand Brewing Company of Longmont, Co.; Stone Brewing Company of Escondido, Calif.; and Maui Brewing Company of Lahaina, Hi.

Operation Homefront is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency assistance for American military troops, the families they leave behind, and wounded servicemen when they return home. The organization raises funds to provide emergency, financial, and morale assistance to families while troops are participating in a tour of duty. Since its creation in 2002 Operation Homefront has met over 741,000 needs of military families and military personnel returning from duty.

Operation Homefront was developed to support the families of deployed service members immediately following 9/11. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, the organization currently provides services to military families across the nation with 23 locations serving 43 states. The national office handles cases in states that do not have their own local offices. The majority of its clients are the lowest-paid service members, the E-1 through E-6 enlisted ranks.

The RiverDogs are currently home through Friday evening hosting the Savannah Sand Gnats tonight and the Hickory Crawdads for three games beginning Wednesday night. Club Joins MiLB’s “Winning with Doubles” Fundraising Campaign for BBBS on May 16

Charleston-RiverDogsGeneral Manager Dave Echols has announced that the Charleston RiverDogs will be participating in Minor League Baseball’s “Winning with Doubles” fundraising campaign to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Carolina Youth Development Center.

Fans can participate by visiting the “Winning with Doubles” site (www.MiLB.com/give), select the Charleston RiverDogs as their team, and pledge the amount they would like to donate for each double hit by a RiverDogs player in April and May.

Big-Brothers-Big-Sisters2Bigs and Littles will be attending the RiverDogs game on Friday, May 16, against the Hickory Crawdads. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.

The RiverDogs plan to have the Bigs and Littles stand on the field with players and coaches before the game and will donate items for a BBBS raffle. One lucky Little will throw the ceremonial first pitch.

Another opportunity for fan participation will be at the May 16 game when fans can purchase tickets for the BBBS raffle.

“We hope that by creating further awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Carolina Youth Development Center and the need for more caring adult mentors here in the Lowcountry, we will encourage people to become involved in the program by applying to volunteer as a Big,” said Echols, who is a longtime member of their board of directors.

Tampa-YankeesThe Tampa Yankees will host their annual Pepsi Cola Little League Day at Steinbrenner Field on Sunday, April 27th when they take on the Lakeland Flying Tigers at 1:00PM.

The first 250 kids, ages 14 and under, that enter the stadium will receive a Collector’s Pepsi Cola Yankees pin. Gates will open at 12:00PM. All guests will receive free admission when they show up to the Box Office wearing their Little League uniform (players and coaches).

Palma Ceia Little League Challenger Teams will play a game on Steinbrenner Field after the Tampa Yankees game concludes. The Tampa Yankees actively assist youth baseball and softball programs in the Tampa area to promote the Little League Mission, developing qualities of citizenship, discipline, teamwork and physical well-being.

Tickets are $4 for general admission, $6 for reserved seating and can be purchased at the George M. Steinbrenner Field Box Office.

Adopt-a-Field Program Back in 2014

Moosic, Pa. – There’s something special about a baseball diamond. Add kids to the scene and you have the storybook home run. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) hope to help area youth enjoy America’s pastime all the more with the 2014 edition of the team’s Adopt-a-Field Program.

What began a few years ago with two teams getting the annual makeover, one each from Lackawanna County and Luzerne County, has blossomed into a four-field program. In 2014, that will consist of one high school field, one softball field, and two youth fields. Field nominations should be sent to the RailRiders’ community relations manager Rachel Mark (rmark@swbrailriders.com). Entries from both Lackawanna and Luzerne counties will be accepted and they should include both photos of the fields in need of renovation and related contact information.

The RailRiders will select the top five fields in each category. From there, online voting will determine the winners. The voting will run from April 6-13 with the victors announced on April 14.

“We want every kid in our community to play at their own version of PNC Field,” said RailRiders team president/GM Rob Crain. “That means a high-quality field that can be properly maintained for years to come. I love this program. We as a franchise are committed to doing what we can for our neighbors and this is one of the most fun and directly impactful efforts we can provide. We owe a lot of thanks to Bob Seltzer at Fisher & Son, Company and Pro’s Choice for their generous donations of materials to make this all possible.”

The program affords an individualized evaluation and athletic field maintenance clinic to the chosen sites. More than the initial facelift care of the RailRiders’ raw manpower and expertise, the teams will be taught how to keep up that same professional-level look for years to come.

“This is a great opportunity to provide those maintaining local fields with the knowledge needed to maintain a safe and beautiful playing surface,” said the team’s director of field operations, Steve Horne. “Many leagues don’t have the tools, manpower or guidance needed to keep their fields in good shape. Hopefully, after our crew comes in to help get them started, we can develop a plan that will benefit the leagues and their players for years to come.”

Media members and fans will be invited to document and watch the progress throughout the day at each site. The first makeover will take place on April 29. Other dates and all sites will be announced at a later date once voting concludes.

The RailRiders’ 2014 season begins on Thursday, April 3 when the club kicks off a seven-game road trip at Syracuse against the Chiefs (Washington Nationals).The home slate commences a week later on Thursday, April 10 when the Chiefs visit PNC Field for a four-game series and homestand. RiverDogs to Host 11th Annual “Run, Forrest, Run” 5K Race on April 19

CHARLESTON, SC – Fans of the Charleston RiverDogs may not be able to run forever like Forrest Gump, but they can lace up their running shoes and head to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park for the 11th Annual “Run Forrest Run” 5K Race presented by Fleet Feet Sports on Saturday, April 19 at 4 pm before the RiverDogs game against the Rome Braves.

The course is TAC certified and features split times at each mile marker with chip timing for quick and accurate results.

Proceeds from the rain-or-shine event benefit the MUSC Storm Eye Institute.

“This race is fun for all ages and caters to every type of participant,” said RiverDogs Vice President of Special Events Melissa Azevedo. “Our 5K race begins in front of The Joe and finishes at home plate where runners are greeted by RiverDogs players and coaches.”

With the Cooper River Bridge Run just two weeks prior to April 19th, the top eight local finishers will be invited to participate in the Run Forrest Run 5K Race.

Pre-registration by April 17th cost for the race is $30, and includes a race packet, T-shirt, one ticket to that evening’s RiverDogs game against the Rome Braves (6:05 pm first pitch), an in-game awards ceremony and a post-race party with dinner provided by Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. Late registration and walk-up after April 17th is $35. T-shirts are available while supplies last.

Additional game tickets are $7 each and can be purchased at packet pick-up.

Race packets may be picked up on Friday, April 18th at Fleet Feet Sports in Mt. Pleasant from 12:00 noon until 6:00pm. On-site registration and packet pick-up on race day will open at 1:00pm at Joe Riley Park and close at 3:45pm before the 4:00 race begins.

Community Organization of the Game Program Returns

Moosic, Pa. – One of the signature pieces of community outreach for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) a season ago is back and better than ever. The Community Organization of the Game program, presented by DePietro Pharmacy, is looking for NEPA community groups that wish to spread their word to the masses during the 2014 season.

“DePietro’s Pharmacy is locally owned and invested in the health of our community,” said owner Thomas DiPietro. “We are proud to stay involved in our community. Last year, we donated over $8,000 to local fundraisers and organizations. This year we are proud to be able to sponsor the Community Organization of the Game. Our commitment to our community clearly aligns with the RailRiders’ vision. There are many people who need assistance in our community. Community organizations are often underfunded, so they generally have a small budget for promotions and advertising. The RailRiders’ commitment gives organizations a unique opportunity to educate the public on their services. It also benefits the community, as many people don’t know what kind of help is out there.”

A total of 72 non-profit groups, one for each home game, will receive a tip of the cap and more throughout the 2014 campaign. The groups chosen will own a prime spot on the front porch of NEPA. In addition to receiving four free field reserve seats, the group will also have a concourse table allowing them to pass out information on their organization and cause. Beyond that personal face-to-face time, each group will be have a live pre-game interview on the field that will be shown to all in attendance on PNC Field’s state-of-the-art video board. The message will be further disseminated with a live in-game interview on the RailRiders’ radio broadcast.

The Community Organization of the Game receives other perks like a ceremonial first pitch, their logo getting some time to shine on the video board and most of all, the chance to interact with the very folks they touch with their efforts.

“We are honored to highlight the great organizations that benefit our community,” said team president/GM Rob Crain. “These people and their organizations do so much. If we can help get their message out in any way, we are humbly glad to do so.”
