ROUND ROCK, Texas – Have you dreamed of working in professional baseball? The Round Rock Express and RS3 Strategic Hospitality are hosting a job fair on Saturday, March 12 from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. inside the United Heritage Center at Dell Diamond. The organizations are seeking gameday and event staff for the upcoming 2022 Minor League Baseball season.

Hiring managers will be on hand looking for qualified, hardworking candidates with great guest service skills who are able to work baseball games as well as other sporting and non-sporting events in a variety of different positions. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age to apply, must be able to pass a background check and must be able to work all Express home games at Dell Diamond as well as additional events as needed. The Five Best Black Players in El Paso Professional Baseball History

 

Glenn Braggs played in 117 games for the 1985 Double-A El Paso Diablos, a first place team that went 86-50 and lost in the Texas League Championship Series to the Jackson Mets. Braggs hit .310, hit 20 home runs and drove in 103 runs that year. He later played seven seasons in the major leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds. Braggs won a World Series championship with Cincinnati in 1990.

Pat Listach played in 49 games for the 1991 Diablos, splitting time at second base and shortstop. That year’s Diablos team finished in first place and lost to the Shreveport Captains in the Texas League Championship Series. Listach played six seasons in the major leagues with the Brewers and Houston Astros. He was named American League Rookie of the Year in 1992.

Troy O’Leary played the entire 1992 season with the Diablos, hitting .334 with five home runs and 79 RBIs. He played 11 years in the major leagues with the Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs. O’Leary piled up 1,100 hits in the majors and reached the MLB postseason with the Red Sox and Cubs.

Gary Sheffield was also part of a first place Diablos team in 1988. That year’s El Paso club lost to the Tulsa Drillers in the Texas League Championship Series. Sheffield went on to be a nine-time MLB All-Star, a National League batting champion and a World Series champion with the 1997 Florida Marlins. His 509 home runs are the 26th most in MLB history.

Greg Vaughn was Sheffield’s teammate on the 1988 Diablos. He hit .301 with a team leading 28 home runs and 105 RBIs that year. Vaughn went on to become a four-time MLB All-Star and hit 355 homers in his 15-year MLB career. He helped the San Diego Padres reach the 1998 World Series.

RoughRiders announce new Dallas Black Giants identity for 2022 season

 

FRISCO, Texas (February 10, 2022) – The Frisco RoughRiders are thrilled to announce that they will be playing under the moniker “Dallas Black Giants” over three dates during the 2022 season as a tribute to the Dallas-based Negro Leagues team in the early to mid-1900s. The first of these games will take place on Juneteenth (June 19th) while the RoughRiders will also play as the Black Giants on August 14th and September 7th.

“I’ve been fortunate to hear countless stories about the Negro Leagues from the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Bob Kendrick over the years,” RoughRiders President and General Manager Victor Rojas said. “The work he and his staff have done in raising awareness for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in my hometown of Kansas City has been beyond impressive. I wanted the RoughRiders to be a part of the storytelling in some fashion…to share the history of the game of baseball with those in and around our community, especially history that may not be widely known. We are excited about bringing the Dallas Black Giants back to life in Frisco this summer.”

From the early 1900s into their heyday in the 1920s and 30s, the Dallas Black Giants played host to an entertaining, loud, fast-paced style of baseball synonymous with the Negro Leagues legends of the time. Future Hall of Famer Ernie Banks highlighted a long list of alumni who donned uniforms in downtown Dallas for the Black Giants.

On Juneteenth, Kendrick will be in attendance to throw out the first pitch and meet fans. Additionally, there will be giveaways prior to all three dates and themes that will recreate the excitement and pageantry of the Black Giants Negro Leagues games.

“Fans flocked to see [Negro Leagues] games, so they played a vital role in their communities,” Kendrick said. “It brought a level of joy and excitement to African American communities throughout this country. That’s why the spirit of what’s being done in the minor leagues now is so vitally important because it is opening up the opportunity to make those fans feel welcome back into the stadium.”

Missions to Host Job Fair on Saturday, February, 19th

 

A Second Job Fair Will Be Held on Thursday, March 10th

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Missions and their catering service, Diamond Creations, will be hosting a job fair on Saturday, February 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A second job fair will be held on Thursday, March 10th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Both job fairs will be held at Nelson Wolff Stadium.

The Missions are looking to fill numerous 2022 seasonal positions in the following categories: bat boys (ages 16-18 only), ticket operations, hospitality hosts, ticket scanners, game operations, ushers, 50/50 raffle crew, video production team members (film crew/camera operators), parking attendants, gameday team store employees, gameday accounting staff, and gameday grounds crew members.

The club will also be looking to hire cleaning crew members for the day crew (4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.), as well as, the overnight crew (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.).

Diamond Concessions, the food service provider for the San Antonio Missions, will be accepting applications for the following hourly positions: concession stand attendants/cashiers, grill and fry cooks, kitchen preparation staff, runners, suite servers, bartenders and warehouse. Amarillo Sod Poodles 2022 Job Fairs

 

AMARILLO, Texas – The Amarillo Sod Poodles will be hosting three job fairs looking to hire part-time seasonal positions and fill a variety of roles for the 2022 baseball season at HODGETOWN. The first two job fairs are scheduled for Saturday, February 26, and Saturday, March 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The third and final event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 pm with all three being held in the Fairly Group Club Level inside HODGETOWN.

All positions are game-day/event-only positions, requiring mostly night and weekend commitments from April until the baseball season concludes in September. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, but some positions will require candidates to be 18 years of age or older. HODGETOWN hiring managers are looking for hardworking candidates with great guest service skills to provide guests with an unforgettable experience at HODGETOWN this summer.

Top 5 Black Players in Sugar Land History 

In celebration of Black History Month, throughout February, teams across Minor League Baseball are taking a look back at five of the best Black players to suit up for their club.

While some of these standout performers went on to long and illustrious Major League careers, others simply had great Minor League careers or, in some cases, just one incredible season that went down as “a year for the ages.”

As we gear up for the first season in Sugar Land Space Cowboys history, here is a look at five of the best Black baseball players ever to suit up in Sugar Land.

Jeremy Barfield

Jeremy Barfield became the first Sugar Land player to be awarded the Atlantic League Player of the Year, blasting a team-record 27 home runs in 2016. Sugar Land also went on to win its first Atlantic League Championship that season. The son of former Major League All-Star, Jesse Barfield, Jeremy ranks top-10 in the franchise’s independent history in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs and RBI.

Marty Costes

Costes was a fixture in the Sugar Land lineup during the second half of the 2021 season. Costes hit .262 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in 40 games with Sugar Land, following a promotion from Double A Corpus Christi. One of those four home runs left his bat at 115 mph, making it the hardest-hit home run in terms of exit velocity hit at Constellation Field in ‘20. Including his time with Corpus Christi, Costes ranked fifth of all MiLB players last season (min. 400 plate appearances) with a .427 on-base percentage.

Ronnie Dawson

Ronnie Dawson was a consistent presence in the Sugar Land lineup during their first season as the Houston Astros Triple A affiliate in 2021. Dawson was tied for fourth on the team with 90 games played and hit .249 with seven home runs and 43 RBI. Dawson quickly emerged as a fan-favorite at Constellation Field for his upbeat style of play and ability to engage with fans. Dawson hit the first-ever Triple A grand slam at Constellation Field on May 30. Dawson also made his Major League debut with the Astros in ‘20 prior to debuting in Sugar Land.

Deacon Jones

While Deacon Jones never donned a Skeeters or Space Cowboys uniform as a player, he’s undoubtedly one of the most influential in the organization’s history. Jones was an instrumental figure in bringing professional baseball to Sugar Land in 2012. He worked with City of Sugar Land officials and leaders of the community to bring a quality baseball product to Constellation Field. Since 2012, he’s served as a Special Advisor in the Sugar Land front office. His No. 4, which he wore as a player, was retired in 2019. He became the first person to have their number retired in the organization’s history. Jones played for the Chicago White Sox from 1962-63, ‘66. He proceeded to have a decades-long coaching and scouting career, which included stints as the hitting coach for the Houston Astros and San Diego Padres.

Tracy McGrady

Yes, you read the name correctly. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famer had a brief stint in Sugar Land as a pitcher while the club was still playing in the independent Atlantic League. McGrady, who spent six seasons with the Houston Rockets, made four starts for Sugar Land in 2014. He also started the 2014 Atlantic League All-Star Game at Constellation Field. The organization honored McGrady with his own bobblehead night in 2018, as he returned to Constellation Field that night to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Although McGrady’s stint in Sugar Land was brief, he’s positively one of the most iconic players in franchise history.

In order to honor those who made their way through the Rangers system, this list does not include players who rehabbed in Frisco.

Here is a look at five Black players that stood out in RoughRiders franchise history (in no particular order):

Brandon Boggs

A native of St. Louis, Boggs was drafted out of Georgia Tech by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2004 draft and picked his way through the Texas system to the big leagues. In 2007, he made his stop in Frisco, hitting .266/.385/.508 over 104 games with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs. Boggs touched down in Texas the following season, playing in 101 games with the Rangers while accumulating a .733 OPS with eight home runs. Over four big league seasons, Boggs hit .209/.315/.380 with the Rangers and Brewers from 2008 to 2011.

Jason Bourgeois

Bourgeois was a member of the inaugural 2003 RoughRiders team and played in Frisco in 2004 as well. A second-round selection of the Rangers in 2000 out of Forest Brook High School in Houston, Texas, the outfielder hit .254/.309/.342 over 193 games in a Riders uniform while totaling 33 steals, 24 doubles and six home runs. After making his debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2008, Bourgeois went on to play for Milwaukee, Houston, Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Cincinnati over an eight-year major league career.

DeMarcus Evans

Evans came to the RoughRiders in 2019 and immediately made an impact, going 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA over 30 outings while striking out 60 in 37.2 innings. For his efforts, Evans was named the Texas Rangers Minor League Reliever of the Year for the second-straight season as well as the 2019 MiLB Relief Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America. The Petal, Mississippi native was selected out of Petal High School by the Rangers in 2015 and made his major league debut in 2020 with Texas. While playing in Arlington over the last two seasons, Evans has made 29 outings, owning a 4.75 ERA with 37 strikeouts to 16 walks in his 30.1 innings.

Taylor Hearn

Hearn came to the Rangers organization from Pittsburgh in a trade for Keone Kela in 2018. Following the trade, Hearn went 1-2 with a 5.04 ERA in five starts with the RoughRiders that season, whiffing 33 in 25.0 innings while walking nine. The next year, the Royse City, Texas native made his first appearance in the big leagues with the Rangers and has complied 57 outings, 12 starts, in his last three seasons in Texas. In 2021, Hearn excelled as a reliever, going 2-2 with a 3.54 ERA over 31 games out of the bullpen.

John Mayberry Jr.

The 19th-overall selection in the 2005 draft by the Rangers, Mayberry played for the RoughRiders in 2007 and 2008. Over those two seasons, he hit .248/.311/.468 with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs over 90 games. Going on to make his MLB debut with the Phillies in 2009, the former Stanford Cardinal played seven seasons in the majors, hitting .235/.299/.421 between Philadelphia, New York (N.L.) and Toronto. His best season came in 2011, when Mayberry hit .273/.341/.513 with 15 long balls and 49 knocked in over 104 games, totaling a 1.6 WAR.

Minor League Baseball Announces “The Nine,” a New Initiative to Celebrate, Engage and Welcome Black Fans

NEW YORK, NY, Feb. 1, 2022 — Minor League Baseball® (MiLB™) today announced the launch of “The Nine,” a new, Black-community focused outreach platform specifically designed to honor and celebrate the historic impact numerous Black baseball pioneers made on the sport, provide new opportunities for youth baseball and softball participation, further diversify the business of baseball, and embrace millions of passionate fans throughout MiLB’s 120 communities nationwide.

Named for the number Jackie Robinson wore during his only season playing in MiLB with the Triple-A Montreal Royals in 1946, The Nine will connect MiLB teams’ existing, Black-community focused development efforts with new national programming and future special events in a coordinated and centralized campaign. The new inclusion initiative follows MiLB’s Copa de la Diversión Latino fan engagement platform introduced in 2017 that included 76 MiLB teams in 2021.

The Nine will recognize and honor numerous Black pioneers and trailblazing civil rights leaders in all 120 MiLB communities, ensuring the heroes of the past and their contributions continue to be celebrated through ceremonies and events at MiLB ballparks and in the community. Recent tributes and celebrations have included Negro Leagues commemorative games honoring the Austin Black Senators in Round Rock (TX), the Bradenton (FL) Nine Devils, and Page Fence Giants near Lansing (MI). Additional tribute games are being planned for the 2022 season and beyond.

“The Nine will shine bright spotlights on these successful initiatives and transform them into national campaigns reaching more fans and communities, further showcasing our teams’ commitment to representing, honoring, and welcoming all fans to MiLB’s unique brand of fun,” said Kurt Hunzeker, MLB’s Vice President of Minor League Business Operations. “The Nine is just the latest example of MiLB teams being true community champions.”

In addition to player- and team-related content, The Nine will focus heavily on creating new opportunities for youth participation among young Black boys and girls, particularly in communities where youth baseball and softball programming is either nonexistent or difficult to access.

Central to this youth-focused push is a planned expansion of Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) Program throughout MiLB’s national footprint. New competitions in MLB’s Pitch, Hit & Run and Junior Home Run Derby event series will also debut in MiLB markets beginning in 2022.

MiLB teams will continue to build relationships with local Black-owned and operated businesses, local artists and entertainers in an effort to embrace Black culture and make MiLB ballparks a hub for culturally relevant concerts, shows, and community events.

With several MiLB teams having a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in their community, opportunities will be provided for those schools to start internship and mentorship programs with their local team, creating opportunities for on-the-job experience for students prior to entering the job market. Additionally, MiLB recently partnered with TeamWork Online to create a more inclusive virtual job fair and ongoing talent pipeline that aims to recruit and position qualified and ready-for-hire candidates from across the country for potential management- and executive-level roles within MiLB team front offices.

Here is a look at five of the best Black baseball players ever to suit up for the San Antonio Missions organization.

Joe Morgan

Considered to be one of the best second baseman of all-time, Joe Morgan spent one season in San Antonio prior to his Hall of Fame MLB career. Playing for the San Antonio Bullets in 1964, Morgan appeared in 140 games that season and recorded 160 hits. He also scored 113 runs, hit 42 doubles and eight triples, swiped 47 bases, drove in 90 runs, and recorded a .323 batting average. Still to this day, this ranks as one of the strongest individual seasons in San Antonio baseball history.

Morgan made his major league debut in 1963 with the Houston Colt .45s. He appeared in eight games that season and 10 more games during the 1964 season. After establishing himself in the Houston organization, he was traded to Cincinnati ahead of the 1972 season. His career with the Reds was a legendary one. He was an All-Star in all eight seasons with the Reds, helped the team with two World Series titles, and was named National League Most Valuable Player in 1975 and 1976.

Morgan spent 22 seasons in the big leagues with Houston, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Oakland. He was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1990 on his first year of eligibility. He recorded over 2,500 hits, scored over 1600 runs, and swiped nearly 700 bases during his playing career. He and “The Big Red Machine”, consisting of Morgan, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, and Dave Concepcion, put together some of the best seasons in major league history.

Billy Williams

A member of the Chicago Cubs’ All-Century Team, Billy Williams is also one of the most recognizable names in major league baseball history. Like Joe Morgan, Williams appeared in one season for the San Antonio Missions prior to his Hall of Fame career. In 1959, Williams appeared in 94 games with the Missions and collected 118 hits. He also hit 22 doubles and 10 home runs while driving in 79 runs. He made his major league debut that same season with the Chicago Cubs.

Williams quickly made a name for himself with the Cubs and was awarded National League Rookie of the Year in 1961. During that campaign, he played 146 games and showed off his power with 25 home runs, 20 doubles, and seven triples. He would spend 16 of his 18 seasons in Chicago. Williams finished his career with Oakland following a 1975 trade.

In his illustrious career, the Alabama native was the runner-up for National League Most Valuable Player on two different occasions and both times he fell short to Johnny Bench. The six-time All-Star finished his career with 426 home runs, 2,700 hits, and a .290 career batting average. He was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1987.

Dave Stewart

It took Dave Stewart six seasons and four organizations to become a household name. Before he was an All-Star and World Series MVP, Stewart made 28 starts for the San Antonio Dodgers during the 1978 season. It was a feast or famine season for Stewart as he won 14 of those starts while losing 12 of them. His ERA was a respectable 3.68 and he pitched two complete game shutouts. Stewart also made his major league debut that season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“Smoke” Stewart saw some early success with the Dodgers posting a 3.33 ERA in four seasons with the club including a World Series title in 1981. He then spent three seasons with the Texas Rangers and two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies before ending up with the Oakland Athletics in 1986. The following season saw Stewart begin an incredible streak of four dominant seasons on the mound. From 1987-1990, Stewart recorded 20 or more wins in each season and finished in the top four in America League Cy Young Award voting. The 1989 season saw Stewart named to his first and only All-Star game, claim his second World Series title, and be named World Series MVP.

In the final stage of his career, Stewart won a third World Series title in 1993 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. He was named American League Championship MVP in 1990 with Oakland and in 1993 with Toronto. In 16 seasons, he went 168-129 with a 3.95 ERA while going 10-6 with a 2.84 ERA in 22 postseason appearances. Following his retirement, Stewart spent time as an assistant GM and pitching coach with Toronto and Milwaukee. He also served as the general manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2014-2016.

Adam Jones

Despite beginning his career at shortstop, Adam Jones transitioned into one of the finest outfielders of the 21st century. Jones was still primarily a middle infielder when he played for the San Antonio Missions in 2005. Appearing in 63 games for the club, only twice was he in the outfield. During that 2005 stretch in San Antonio, Jones recorded 68 hits including 10 doubles and seven home runs.

After officially making the shift from infielder to outfielder, Jones debuted with the Seattle Mariners in the 2006 season. However, he wouldn’t become a household name until he became a member of the Baltimore Orioles. Jones was named an All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner in just his second season with the club in 2009. A few years later, he began a streak of four consecutive All-Star Game appearances and three consecutive Gold Glove Awards. He also received his first and only Silver Slugger Award in 2013.

Jones played 14 seasons in the big leagues with Seattle, Baltimore, and Arizona. The 36-year-old spent the last two seasons playing baseball in Japan. During his time in the big leagues, Jones nearly reached 2,000 career hits, hit 282 home runs and collected 336 doubles. He finished with a career batting average of .277.

Jimmy Wynn

Jimmy Wynn, also known as “The Toy Cannon”, played 15 years in the big leagues with the Houston Colt .45s/Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, and Milwaukee Brewers. He was a steady force for Houston in the late 1960s as well as the Dodgers in the mid-70s. Before he was making All-Star appearances and recording 30-homer seasons, Wynn appeared in 78 games for the San Antonio Bullets in 1963. He would eventually make his major league debut in the same season. While in San Antonio, Wynn demonstrated his power ability with 16 home runs, 15 doubles, and 11 triples. He recorded 87 hits during those 78 games played in San Antonio.

Following his debut with Houston in 1963, Wynn was named to his first All-Star team in 1967. Appearing in 158 games, Wynn slugged 37 home runs and 29 doubles while driving in 107 runs. He remained in Houston through the 1973 season and then found a career resurgence once he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1974. The Texas native made his second All-Star appearance and finished fifth in the National League MVP voting after hitting 32 homers and driving in 108 runs. He was named an All-Star the following season while hitting 18 home runs and recording a .403 on-base percentage.

At the end of his stellar career, Wynn finished with 1,600 hits, 291 long balls, 285 doubles, and 225 stolen bases. Wynn led the league twice in base on balls and finished his career with a .366 on-base percentage and .250 career batting average.

Round Rock Express National Anthem Auditions Return on February 16

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Do you have what it takes to belt out the National Anthem at a Round Rock Express game during the upcoming 2022 season? Central Texas’ best groups under 10 performers and individual singers are invited to open auditions from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16 inside Kilimanjaro Ballroom Suite #1 at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, located across Highway 79 from Dell Diamond.

There is no fee to perform and the general public is invited to audition. Check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. and a warmup room will be available inside Kilimanjaro Ballroom Suite #3. Due to space and time requirements, groups of 10 or more performers, including bands and choirs, can reach out directly to Express Director of Ballpark Entertainment Steve Richards via email at [email protected] to book a date to perform during the season.

Each season, hundreds of individuals and groups audition to perform the Star-Spangled Banner at one of Round Rock’s home games. While the Express are set to host 72 games this season, it is anticipated that less than 50 spots will remain at the time of auditions due to off-season bookings of large groups.

Those wishing to tryout must keep their performance under 90 seconds while using a traditional, military style with little to no creative variation. Vocal submissions must be a cappella, although instrumental auditions are welcome. Individuals and groups wishing to audition must fill out an application form and bring it with them to their audition. The form is available at RRExpress.com.

Performers will audition in front of a panel of judges, including Laurie Winckel, owner of Vocal Edge Voice Studio in Hutto. Winckel has coached several past Express National Anthem performers and has held numerous workshops leading up to the auditions. She also coaches many performers online across the United States.

All participants will be notified whether or not they have been invited to perform within two weeks of the auditions. If selected, the performer must sing the same version that they auditioned at their scheduled game. Those who cannot attend the open auditions but wish to perform can submit a video recording of their audition via email to Express Director of Ballpark Entertainment Steve Richards via email at [email protected]. Video auditions will only be evaluated after all in-person performers have been scheduled and notified.

Concessions Fundraising Program Returns For 2022 Season

 

AMARILLO, Texas – The Amarillo Sod Poodles, in conjunction with Diamond Creations, the team’s food and beverage provider, are excited for the return of their Concessions Fundraising Program to the community for the 2022 season. The initiative offers a unique fundraising opportunity for non-profit groups through concession stand sales at HODGETOWN.

Non-profit or 501(c)(3) groups, sporting clubs, cheer groups, girl and boy scout troops, church and school organizations, and more are encouraged to join and easily meet fundraising goals through concession sales during the 2022 Sod Poodles baseball season.

To fundraise, groups simply provide individuals to work in a concession stand, and, in turn, earn money for their organization. Groups are not limited on how many games they work throughout the 69 home-game season. All dates will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hooks Fans Donate Nearly $65,000 in 2021

 

CORPUS CHRISTI – Via the Astros Foundation Share2Care 50/50 Raffle, Whataburger Field patrons donated $64,840 to seven Coastal Bend organizations during Hooks games this past season.

USO South Texas, Amos Rehabilitation Keep, Mosaic Project of South Texas, Je’Sani Smith Foundation, Goodwill Industries of South Texas, Corpus Christi Police Officers Association and Corpus Christi Professional Firefighters Association were beneficiaries of the 2021 50/50 raffle.

“Thank you Hooks fans for joining us at the ballpark and helping out these great causes,” Hooks General Manager Brady Ballard said. “We were excited to bring the Astros Foundation Share2Care Raffle to Whataburger Field, and it’s become a highlight of the gameday experience.

“Our partners, members and fans have stepped up during these challenging times. We are incredibly grateful for their support and, during this week of Thanksgiving, want affirm our commitment of being an active and positive participant in the community.”
