Hooks Fans Donate Nearly $72,000 in 2022

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Corpus Christi Hooks awarded over $70,000 this past season to several local non-profits through contributions made by fans towards the Astros Foundation Share2Care 50/50 raffle.

Non-profit recipients included CC RIMZ, Texas State Aquarium, Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana, Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation, The Traveling Library, USO South Texas, Corpus Christi Police Officers Association & Corpus Christi Professional Firefighters Association, Military Order of the Purple Heart Foundation Chapter 598, Goodwill Industries of South Texas, Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas, Coastal Bend Food Bank and Rainbow Room.

“Thank you to our fans who make this possible, their support impacts more than just baseball as shown by the diversity of 50/50 raffle recipients in 2022,” Hooks General Manager Brady Ballard said. “The Astros Foundation Share2Care Raffle continues to be a gameday staple and creates a win-win experience for both our fans and the community.”

CC RIMZ promotes adaptive sports within the Coastal Bend. Texas State Aquarium aims to engage people with animals, inspire appreciation for our seas, and support wildlife conservation. The mission of Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation was created to expand awareness of his legacy and the continued relevance of his fight for equal rights for all. The Traveling Library provides knowledge to those in need by providing literature and other resources that are needed. USO South Texas serves NAS Corpus Christi and NAS Kingsville, connecting military service members to family, home and country.

The Corpus Christi Police Officers Association and Corpus Christi Professional Firefighters Association advocate for the safety and well-being of first responders and citizens through community action and support of local non-profit organizations. The Military Order of the Purple Heart Foundation Chapter 598 was formed for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration and offers youth programs focused on fostering patriotism and good citizenship among America’s youth. Goodwill Industries of South Texas provides job training, placement services, and other Coastal Bend-based programs for people who have barriers to their employment.

The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas promotes the advancement of women in public, corporate and civic life through education, personal and professional development. Coastal Bend Food Bank fights hunger and promotes wellness through food distribution and nutrition education. Rainbow Room provides hope for abused and neglected children.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Via the Astros Foundation Share2Care 50/50 Raffle, Whataburger Field patrons donated $64,840 to seven Coastal Bend organizations during Hooks games this past season.

USO South Texas, Amos Rehabilitation Keep, Mosaic Project of South Texas, Je’Sani Smith Foundation, Goodwill Industries of South Texas, Corpus Christi Police Officers Association and Corpus Christi Professional Firefighters Association were beneficiaries of the 2021 50/50 raffle.

“Thank you Hooks fans for joining us at the ballpark and helping out these great causes,” Hooks General Manager Brady Ballard said. “We were excited to bring the Astros Foundation Share2Care Raffle to Whataburger Field, and it’s become a highlight of the gameday experience.

“Our partners, members and fans have stepped up during these challenging times. We are incredibly grateful for their support and, during this week of Thanksgiving, want affirm our commitment of being an active and positive participant in the community.”

USO South Texas serves NAS Corpus Christi and NAS Kingsville, connecting military service members to family, home and country. Amos Rehabilitation Keep, or ARK, rehabilitates marine turtles and marine birds from the coastal zone of Mustang Island and St. Joseph Island. The Mosaic Project of South Texas remembers victims of hate crimes and violence, and advocates for the civil rights of LGBTQ Americans. The mission of the Je’Sani Smith Foundation is to save lives by providing education, awareness, and water skills training on beach safety, rip currents and other coastal hazards.

Keys Care Grant Recipients Announced for 2020

FREDERICK, MD -The Frederick Keys are excited to announce their Frederick Keys Care grant recipients for 2019-20. Keys Care supports local non-profit organizations in Frederick County who provide direct aid to disadvantaged youth and young adults. The Keys Care Fund is part of the Community Foundation of Frederick County’s Universal Grant Application funding program. Grants are awarded each fall for the next calendar year, while any Frederick County 501 (c) (3) organization which provides direct aid to county youth is eligible to apply for a grant.

Started in 1999 as the Joel A. Stephens Memorial Fund, Keys Care was created to honor the memory of Stephens, a former Orioles farmhand. Passing away at only 22 years old due to colon cancer, Joel’s commitment to community service and helping young people set him apart as a player.

Since Keys Care was founded, over $90,000 in grants has been awarded to local youth-based organizations. For the 2019-20 grant period, over $11,000 will be given out to five different organizations.

Advocates for Homeless Families: Strives to achieve permanent solutions to homelessness by providing access to housing, education, employment and supportive services to Frederick County families who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. This year’s grant supports enriching after-school and summer activities for approximately 20 children, ages 3-14 who participate with their families in transitional and rapid rehousing programs. Funding would support activities such as karate, tennis, dance, cooking, athletics, church and day camp as well as pool passes for all participating children ($1,500).

Blessings in a Backpack: Provides weekend backpacks of food to children from Pre-K through eighth grade who depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition Monday-Friday. Starting in 2015-16, a special request was made to assist special needs young adults. These 18-21-year-olds Success Program students have recently received high school certificates and deal with the stresses of food insecurity over weekends and school breaks as they learn life skills in order to live independent and productive lives. This year’s grant will help provide food to 15 low-income Success Program students for a fifth straight year ($1,500).

Student Homelessness Initiative Partnership (SHIP): Provides urgent resources and critical services to the hundreds of Frederick County youth experiencing homelessness each year. Funding benefits the New Horizons Academy which provides academic and life skills that will help homeless students get back on track or remain on track for a successful high school graduation. For five weeks each summer, Frederick County youth who experience homelessness can participate in morning instruction from one of four courses mandatory for graduation. After lunch, each student participates in one hour of life skills instruction ($2,000).

YMCA of Frederick County: The Kids Unlimited program provides summer camps for children with autism and other special needs. This program was founded to give these children a safe, nurturing and enriching summer program. Prior to Kids Unlimited, there was no summer program to serve children with special needs. Grant funds will be used to support this program, which will give participants a chance to have fun with arts and crafts, sensory activities, cooking, sports and group games. Field trips will be planned, while integration with other camp programs will help campers develop social skills and enjoy other fun opportunities ($2,200).

Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley: A program aimed at youth between 14-24 years old, who may have a disability and who has a parent that is a veteran, deceased or may have a serious illness. This program is designed to work with 2-3 youth in empowerment in all areas of their lives under a holistic framework. A GIMV Youth Coordinator would work directly with each individual to design a personal development plan specifically designed to empower and promote growth ($3,829.56).

All fund recipients will be recognized prior to a 2020 Keys game and are invited to the annual Frederick Keys Care Charity Golf Classic. Fans who want to learn ways to donate to Frederick Keys Care can visit fredererickkeys.com and click on the “Community” tab.

Sea Dogs Partner with Goodwill for Donation Drive

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs have partnered with Goodwill Northern New England to host the 9th Annual Goodwill Night and Donation Drive at Hadlock Field on Wednesday, June 20th when the Sea Dogs take on the Reading Fightin Phils at 7:00 PM.

Fans are encouraged to bring bags of gently used clothing, books, and other household items to Hadlock Field to donate to Goodwill. Goodwill will have a donation center at Hadlock Field to collect the items. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston RiverDogs, in partnership with Palmetto Goodwill’s new line of business, GoodPeople Staffing, will host two Jobs at The Joe Hire Me! events to fill ballpark gameday positions for the 2018 season: a food & beverage only job event on Saturday, February 10 and a general job fair for all positions on Saturday, March 3, both at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs are seeking qualified candidates for positions ranging from cashiers to ushers, merchandise employees to mascots, and more. Those interested in positions in food and beverage are encouraged to attend one of the two hiring events.

 Applicants for all other positions, and anyone interested in F&B jobs who miss the February event, should attend the March job fair at the ballpark.

Miracle present checks for Irma relief

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the past few weeks, the Fort Myers Miracle completed check presentations to eight charities across the Southwest Florida community that have played a major role in Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

This was made possible by a $13,000 donation from MiLB Charities. The Miracle then allocated the money to the following organizations: Lee County Schools, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, Southwest Florida Community Foundation, Goodwill, New Horizons of Southwest Florida, Naples Zoo, and Everglades Wonder Gardens.

“We selected these organizations because of their incredible commitment to this community after the devastation of Hurricane Irma,” Miracle owner Jason Hochberg said. “As the community’s baseball team, we felt this was the least we could do to thank them for their efforts.”

The check presentations included leaders from all the organizations, Miracle mascot Sway, and representatives from the Miracle front office.

“As a non-for profit all funds are deeply appreciated,” Karl Steidinger, Director of Operations for Midwest Food Bank said. “The money will help us continue both our relief effort in the aftermath of Irma and our mission to alleviate hunger in southwest Florida. We are grateful for organizations like the Fort Myers Miracle that share in our passion to help others in our communities. Together we will make a difference our community and beyond!”

The Minnesota Twins, the parent club of the Miracle, also pitched in to help with Irma relief. They partnered with the Boston Red Sox to contribute $200,000 to the Southwest Florida Community Foundation. Miracle ownership and fans have also donated over $20,000 to various charities for Irma relief.

“It was great to see the entire community come together in the wake of the worst storm to hit this area in a long time,” Miracle general manager Chris Peters said. “The aftermath of Irma was tough, but the worst brought out the best in Southwest Florida and helped speed up the recovery process. We are happy to have helped and our hats go off to these great organizations.

The Miracle will host an Irma Recovery/First Responders night at the CenturyLink Sports Complex in April. Opening Night is April 5, when the Miracle host the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Minors teams raise over $300,000 for disaster relief

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Minor League Baseball Charities today announced the distribution of over $180,000 in cash to charities assisting with recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Minor League Baseball’s 160 teams combined to raise over $300,000 for disaster relief.

The city of Corpus Christi, Texas, and the surrounding communities suffered significant damage during Hurricane Harvey. As a result of Minor League Baseball’s fundraising efforts, the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, made a significant donation to the Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group and will be making donations to Little League programs in Port Aransas, Rockport, Refugio, Aransas Pass and Ingleside to help the leagues repair facilities and purchase equipment that was damaged or lost in the storm.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude at the generosity of teams across Minor League Baseball as our industry meets the needs of those who have come into harm’s way,” said Corpus Christi Hooks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Andy Steavens. “These funds will help fuel recovery in the Coastal Bend as the calendar turns to 2018. It’s a long process, but we’re pleased and privileged to help and proud to be a part of this region and Minor League Baseball.”

“These donations are another example of the collective power of Minor League Baseball and our 160 teams across the country,” said Courtney Nehls, Assistant Director, Community Engagement, for Minor League Baseball. “In times of need, whether a natural disaster or otherwise, our organization and its teams have proven time and time again that together, our charitable efforts help build stronger communities.”

With the devastating flooding that took place in Houston, Minor League Baseball Charities made a significant donation to the Houston Astros Foundation to assist with its disaster relief projects, and with guidance from the Astros Foundation, made donations to the Houston Police Department’s Blue Santa Program, the Houston Food Bank and the Houston Children’s Charity, which will provide beds and linens to children when they return to their homes.

As Hurricane Irma cut a path across Florida, three Florida State League communities and one Southern League community saw extensive damage, and Minor League Baseball raised over $50,000 for relief assistance in those areas.

The Fort Myers Miracle, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, split a donation from MiLB Charities between eight worthy organizations in their community: The Harry Chapin Food Bank, Everglades Wonder Gardens, Goodwill, Lee County Schools, Midwest Food Bank, Naples Zoo, New Horizons of Southwest Florida and the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, donated their portion of the Hurricane Irma relief funds to the United Way of Charlotte County to assist with their continued recovery efforts.

The St. Lucie Mets, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the New York Mets, split their donation between the Mustard Seed Ministries, SAFER St. Lucie and the United Way of St. Lucie County.

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, donated their portion of the Hurricane Irma relief funds to the Trinity Rescue Mission Women and Children’s Center.

In addition to the $180,000 distributed by Minor League Baseball Charities, Minor League Baseball teams made donations totaling over $120,000 directly to relief organizations including the Red Cross, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.

Tides to renovate local youth field

4th year of field makeover contest

Norfolk-TidesThe Norfolk Tides today announced the return of a contest in which a local youth field will be renovated by Tides groundskeepers and front office staff. Proudly presented by Goodwill, this field makeover will include an upgrade to the playing surface and an improvement to existing dugouts, with the recipient of the makeover being determined by a fan vote on the Tides’ Facebook page.

“This project has become a yearly highlight for our entire front office staff” said Tides General Manager Joe Gregory. “We’re excited to offer our resources to these worthy organizations, as they provide a home for children to learn the game of baseball while serving as an environment conducive to fitness and fun.”

Goodwill2Those interested in having the Tides makeover their facility should submit a picture of their field to Heather McKeating at HMckeating@norfolktides.com. Along with the photo, fans are asked to include a brief description of why their league should receive this enhancement. The deadline to submit this information is February 6, with online voting taking place on the Tides’ Facebook page from February 16 to February 20.

2015 is the fourth year in which the Tides will be renovating a local youth field. Over the first three years of the program, the Tides have helped renovate six local fields – Ocean View Little League (Norfolk), Smithfield Recreation Association (Smithfield), Bennett’s Creek Little League (Suffolk), Phoebus Little League (Hampton), Shore Little League (Nassawadox) and Cradock Little League (Portsmouth).

In addition to the field makeover, the Tides will be hosting a youth baseball groundskeeper seminar on Wednesday, February 11 at Harbor Park from 5-8 pm. The event will allow two members per youth league the opportunity to tour the Harbor Park playing surface alongside Tides groundskeepers Kenny Magner and Derek Trueblood. This free seminar will then feature dinner at Hits at the Park Restaurant followed by a question and answer session designed to help youth baseball leagues prepare their fields each year. Those interested must RSVP by February 4 to Heather McKeating at HMckeating@norfolktides.com.

“Goodwill is proud to support this amazing community giveback effort for a second consecutive year” said Danielle Cronin, Community Relations Manager for Goodwill. “As a nonprofit, we strengthen families and communities throughout Hampton Roads with our job training programs and career development services. The leadership and staff at Goodwill look forward to being a part of the field renovation – it’s just one more way we can give back to our local community.”

The project is made possible thanks to Goodwill and the Tides Youth Baseball Fund, a program established by the Tides in 1990 as a way to raise money for youth baseball and softball programs in Hampton Roads. In addition to assisting with field renovations, the Youth Baseball Fund also helps local teams and leagues with travel expenses. The Tides open their 2015 regular season with a nine-game road trip beginning Thursday, April 9, with the home opener slated for Saturday, April 18 vs. Durham at 7:05 pm. RiverDogs Begin the Holiday Season with Three Community Initiatives

Club partners with Palmetto Goodwill, Lowcountry Food Bank and Salvation Army to help others

Charleston-RiverDogsThe holidays are right around the corner and the Charleston RiverDogs, the Lowcountry’s professional sports leader, has orchestrated three community-involved programs to help those in need.

“The holiday season will be upon us very soon, and the RiverDogs will once again continue with our commitment to be good citizens and neighbors,” said General Manager Dave Echols. “Our staff is excited to start the holiday season, and part of the season is giving back. And we’ll do it with our ‘Fun Is Good’ approach.”

Goodwill2Beginning on Tuesday, November 18 from 9 am – 6:30 pm, the club will host at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park a clothing donation drive for Palmetto Goodwill. While the RiverDogs will make a significant clothing donation, the club’s staffers will also clean out their own closets and donate items to Goodwill. Fans are invited to stop by Riley Park and donate some of their clothing to Goodwill, and we’ll treat you to a cup of free hot chocolate and a voucher for a game in 2015. The RiverDogs’ popular mascot, Charlie T. RiverDog, will be on hand and will donate a bag of his clothing. Charlie also encourages other local mascots to join in the activities.

Lowcountry Food BankThen on Friday, Nov. 21, beginning at 12 noon, the club will host its annual staff/ RiverDogs Potluck Lunch. This year the Potluck Lunch will also be a food drive in conjunction with the Lowcountry Food Bank. In this, the RiverDogs invite their season ticket holders and many loyal fans to The Joe to spend “Thanksgiving” with us as we collect food. Those who come are encouraged to bring a food dish and canned food for the drive. A RSVP is requested to haley@riverdogs.com.

Salvation-ArmyAnd finally on Saturday, December 13 beginning at 11 am, the RiverDogs will offer the opportunity kids and fans to have pictures taken with “Charlie Claus” and Santa as the team hosts a toy drive in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Here, families may come to The Joe and have their kids get a free picture with Charlie and Santa Claus. In order to get a picture taken, one must donate a child’s new toy to the Salvation Army.

At the event, Christmas music will be played over the park’s public address system, vendors will be on hand with their goods set up on tables. There will also be a special Christmas-themed craft section and the popular bounce house will be open. Light snacks and hot cocoa will also be available. And as a bonus, the RiverDogs will donate $1 for every Kids Club Member who attends the event. Santa will only be at The Joe for a limited time.

RiverDogs Partner with Palmetto Goodwill for Goodwill Hunting

Scavenger hunt to be conducted in select tri-county Goodwill stores, August 4-10

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Charleston RiverDogs and Palmetto Goodwill have teamed up to host Goodwill Hunting, a tri-county scavenger hunt that runs Monday, August 4 through Sunday, August 10 at select Goodwill stores. Participants can win tickets to a RiverDogs game at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park and a chance to win a daily prize pack.

“We have been very pleased to partner with Palmetto Goodwill throughout this season, and this fun and exciting promotion enhances that partnership,” said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. “We welcome all of our fans to participate in this scavenger hunt, and we wish everyone the best of luck.”

Goodwill2Starting August 4, scavenger hunt items will be placed in select Goodwill retail stores in Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston counties. Clues leading to the Goodwill store where the item is located and a picture of each day’s Goodwill Hunting item will be released on the Palmetto Goodwill and Charleston RiverDogs Facebook pages daily starting at 9 am.

Once fans visit the correct Goodwill store and locate that day’s item, they should snap a picture with their cell phone and show the picture at checkout. If they do not have a cell phone, they can identify the Goodwill Hunting code on the item and let the cashier know the code at checkout. In return they will receive two tickets to a RiverDogs home game. If the participant uploads the photo to Facebook and tags Palmetto Goodwill and the RiverDogs, he or she is automatically entered into a drawing for a daily prize pack.

Daily grand prizes include gift certificates to Joe Pasta, Triangle Char & Bar, McDonald’s, Brixx Pizza, Bootjack, Monster Music & Movies, Shem Creek Bar & Grill, CDs and more.

There is no purchase necessary to play, but participants must follow Palmetto Goodwill and the Charleston RiverDogs on Facebook.

Goodwill Great Cookies™ will be sold at all remaining Cedar Rapids Roughriders games (starting March 15th) and all Cedar Rapids Kernels games this season.

These huge, monster cookies are baked fresh from scratch by veterans in the Heartland and delivered by veterans. This program allows homeless and disadvantaged veterans job training and skill development to help them overcome barriers to independence. So when you buy a cookie at the Roughriders and Kernels, you will truly “Eat a Cookie, Save a Life.”
