(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) A student at Wilmore Elementary School was the winner of a bookmark design contest that is part of the Lexington Legends Hit the Books reading incentive program.

Fourth grade student Lyla Lamb created the winning entry. She received a Legends prize pack, including Legends merchandise, a framed Hit the Books poster featuring her artwork and membership in the 2014 Little Legends Kids Club. She also will be invited to throw a ceremonial first pitch at a designated Legends game for her school. Bookmarks featuring her artwork will be distributed to students at every school that participates in the Hit the Books program. More than 27,000 students from 65 central Kentucky schools are expected to take part in the program, which runs through April 1.

Earning runner-up honors were Leah Olmstead, a fifth grade student at Wilmore Elementary; Kevin Spencer, a fifth grade student at Menifee County Elementary; and Samuel Jung, a third grade student at Eastern Elementary in Scott County.

Runners-up received a framed poster and Legends merchandise.

“Hit the Books has always been an important part of community outreach for the Legends,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends’ director of community relations and special events. “We enjoy visiting the schools and meeting the students who are taking part in the program. Building literacy in childhood is a great cause. We’re glad to help develop good readers as well as good Legends fans.”

In Hit the Books, a baseball diamond is used to record credit for a student’s reading. For every book a student reads, a teacher places his or her initials on a base. When the student has all three bases and home plate initialed by the teacher, the student may bring a Hit the Books bookmark to the Legends’ box office at Whitaker Bank Ballpark to exchange it for two tickets to a Legends home game designated for their school.

The 2014 season is the 14th for Legends baseball, and also marks the 14th year that the Legends have been associated with Hit the Books. About 175,000 students have participated.

The Legends, a class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, open the home season Thursday, April 3 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark against the West Virginia Power, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. For more information, visit www.lexingtonlegends.com.

Salisbury, MD – The Delmarva Shorebirds and Sherman the Shorebird visited Federalsburg Elementary school on Wednesday, January 15 to honor Linda Davila as the 2014 Hit the Books Bookmark Design Contest winner. After careful review by Shorebirds staff members, Linda’s design was selected out of over 1,000 submissions.

OMAHA, Neb. – The Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST) and the Omaha Storm Chasers have officially kicked off the 12th-annual “Why I Want to Go to College” essay contest, Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg and the Storm Chasers announced this week.

Students in 7th and 8th grade both in and outside the state of Nebraska may send their entries until the March 28 deadline. Essays must be 750 words or less, describing the student’s educational goals and dreams for the future. Entries must be typed, double-spaced on 8 1/2 by 11″ paper and must be the student’s original work. Each entry must be accompanied with the required cover sheet found at http://www.treasurer.org/cs/writing-contest/2014/2014writingContestCoverSheet.pdf.

Judging will be conducted by faculty and students in the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The essay contest awards 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each of Nebraska’s three congressional districts, with winners earning prizes of $2,000, $1,000 and $500 toward a NEST College Savings Plan.

All winners from Nebraska, which will be notified in early May, will receive four box seat tickets and earn recognition prior to the Storm Chasers game on May 11 against the New Orleans Zephyrs. Each winning student will get an opportunity to meet Nebraska State Treasurer Stenberg during their visit to Werner Park.

Hickory Crawdads to host first Art at the Park event

The Hickory Crawdads have announced their first ever Art at the Park event to take place August 13th-15th. All artists are invited to submit their best rendition of their favorite scenes from around the ballpark and have their work voted on by the fans over the three-game home stand.

The event will take place the third week in August as the ‘Dads play host to the Asheville Tourists for a three game series of 7pm games. Artists from around the area are encouraged to submit their original two-dimensional artwork depicting their favorite ballpark scene to the Crawdads Front Office by Monday, August 12th for entry into the competition. All submitted works will be displayed on the main concourse of Crawdads Stadium throughout the home stand for Crawdads fans to view and submit votes for the piece they believe should take home the grand prize. At the conclusion of the home stand, ballots will be counted and the artist whose piece gets the most votes will receive a FREE Luxury Suite for a ballgame.

In addition to the chance to win the grand prize, all participants will receive one free grandstand ticket good for any of the three games during the home stand. All fans and artists are welcome to participate as long as their submissions are within the guidelines. The fan-favorite voting contest will begin when the gates open on Tuesday, August 13th, and will remain open until the conclusion of the game on Thursday, August 15th. The winner will be announced on Friday, August 16th.

Dow Diamond and Michigan Blood to Host Blood Drive

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Great Lakes Loons have partnered with Midland Center for the Arts (MCFTA) to see who can donate more blood to Michigan Blood from July 22 through August 16. Donations can be made at Michigan Blood’s Dow Diamond facility and its MidMichigan Medical Center donation facility, along with a one-time blood drive at Midland Center for the Arts.

“We are ready for the blood drive challenge with Midland Center for the Arts,” said Loons President & General Manager Paul Barbeau. “I have already donated and I hope that other Loons employees and fans will as well. MI Blood and those in need of blood will be the real winners of this competition.”

Michigan Blood’s Dow Diamond donation center is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Its MidMichigan Medical Center donation facility is open Tuesdays from noon to 7 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additionally, MCFTA will also host an on-site blood drive on Tuesday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

When signing in, donors must mention they are donating for the Great Lakes Loons or Midland Center for the Arts. Each participating donor will be included in a drawing to win a prize package of Loons and MCFTA items, including four Loons vouchers, a first pitch opportunity, four tickets to see “Dracula: the Musical” on October 5, an autographed poster from the cast, four drink vouchers for the Saints & Sinners Lounge, and a private dinner for four at Dow Diamond prior to the show.

Results of the contest will be announced at Dow Diamond during MCFTA’ s Salute to the Arts Night on August 20, with the President of the organization that tallies less donors participating in an on-field contest.

Woodbridge, VA-The 2nd Annual Guns vs. Hoses Charity Softball Game at Pfitzner Stadium is set for Sunday, August 11th in which Prince William County Police officers will engage in a standoff with the Yorkshire Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department with local bragging rights on the line.

For the second consecutive summer, men and women of the PWC Police Department and a selected area fire department will square off to benefit a charity chosen by the respective softball squads.

This year, the Guns vs. Hoses showdown will take place from 4:00pm – 5:15pm before the Potomac Nationals contest vs. the Carolina Mudcats (Cleveland Indians) at 6:05pm on 8/11 at The Pfitz.

Gates to Pfitzner Stadium will open to the public at 4:00pm to watch the softball classic.

“Our hometown heroes do so much in our communities, and without the full recognition they deserve. The Potomac Nationals will celebrate all they have done to serve us with an annual day of fun and softball that honors both the police and fire departments along with all of their families,” said Potomac Nationals Vice President/General Manager, Josh Olerud.

For each ticket to the P-Nats game sold by the PWC Police Department and the Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Department, the Potomac Nationals will donate $4 to the chosen charities for each softball team.

Representatives from the police and fire departments will have emergency vehicles displayed at the ballpark and activities for P-Nats fans to enjoy and participate in prior to the Potomac Nationals game.

Marlins, FSL continue scholarship program for 2013

168 scholarships have been awarded over 14 years

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 30, 2013) – The Miami Marlins and Florida State League, for the fourteenth straight year, will fund the Florida State League Scholarship Program for the 2013 baseball season.

The scholarships have a monetary value of $1,500 each and will be presented to a student employee, child or grandchild of an employee of Florida State League teams. Selection will be based on grades, leadership capabilities and job performance. A total of 168 scholarships have been awarded to qualified applicants since the inception of the program.

The Miami Marlins provide a generous contribution to the scholarship program. The purpose of the program is to encourage and reward our school age applicants and to send a message that an education is the key to success in life.

Fisher Cats Name 2013 Scholarship Winners

Twelve student-athletes will receive $2,500 scholarships

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Fisher Cats Foundation have named their 2013 Scholar-Athlete Scholarship winners. Ten graduates from New Hampshire high schools and two from northern Massachusetts have all earned a $2,500 scholarship based on their athletic and academic achievements in high school, and will be celebrated in an on-field ceremony prior to the Fisher Cats’ game on Thursday, July 17, against the Portland Sea Dogs at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

“These students have had remarkable high schools careers, and we are proud to recognize them as our Class of 2013 scholarship winners,” said Art Solomon, Fisher Cats owner and chairman of the Fisher Cats Foundation board. “Not only have they excelled in school and on the fields and courts, but each has displayed a commitment to making their communities better places to live. We congratulate these students and look forward to recognizing them at the ballpark in July.”

The scholarship recipients were selected based upon criteria of academic excellence, athletic achievement, and active citizenship in the community. Money for the scholarships was raised through several Foundation endeavors, most notably the Granite State Baseball Dinner held annually in November.

The Fisher Cats Foundation will award three special scholarships among the twelve – the Swymer Family Scholarship, offered annually to a student who has overcome a barrier and gone on to college; the Chris Carpenter Scholarship, named in honor of New Hampshire native and National League Cy Young Award Winner Chris Carpenter; and the Easter Seals Veterans Count Scholarship, presented to a New Hampshire graduate whose parent or guardian is an active, reserve, or veteran member of the United States Military.

A full list of this year’s winners is below.

*Tanner Nichols (Hinsdale Senior High School/Hinsdale, N.H.) – Tanner was a four sport athlete, competing in basketball, soccer, track and field, and cross country. He was also vice president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Hinsdale PTSA, and a chemistry and math tutor. Tanner will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

*Elizabeth Conway (Manchester Central High School/Manchester, N.H.) – Elizabeth was on the cross country and Nordic skiing teams. She also wrote for the school newspaper, volunteered as a track and field coach for Special Olympics, worked for Amnesty International, and tutored in math, science, history, English, Spanish, and the violin. Elizabeth will attend Brown University.

*Kevin Clougherty (Somersworth High School/Somersworth, N.H.) – Kevin is the recipient of the Swymer Family Scholarship. He played football, basketball, and baseball, and will be the first member of his entire family to graduate from high school. Kevin will attend Keene State College.

*Mitchell Jurius (Inter-Lakes High School/Meredith, N.H.) – Mitchell played a sport all three seasons of his high school career, being named a captain of four of those teams. He was also on the Student Athlete Leadership Committee, a member of the National Honor Society, and a Vacation Bible School teacher. Mitchell will attend Roberts Wesleyan College.

*Nathan Garner (Nashua High School North/Nashua, N.H.) – Nathan is the winner of this year’s Chris Carpenter Scholarship Award. He was a member of the swim team, as well as a student columnist for the Nashua Telegraph. He was a member of the Student Senate, a volunteer swimming coach for Special Olympics, and a member of four honor societies – National, Science, Spanish, and Math. Nathan will attend Bowdoin College.

*Richard Holt (Portsmouth High School/Portsmouth, N.H.) – Richard played football, basketball, and baseball, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Richard will attend the University of New Hampshire, where he will continue his football career.

*Romario Bailey (Stevens High School/Claremont, N.H.) – Romario is the 2013 winner of the Easter Seals Veterans Count Scholarship. He was on the track and field, soccer, and football teams, and he was the founder of the school’s Sports Management Club and a member of the National Technical Honor Society. Romario, originally from Jamaica, will attend the University of Vermont.

*Rylee Weinstein (Sunapee Senior High School/Sunapee, N.H.) – Rylee was a member of the soccer, basketball, softball, and ski teams. She was also the vice president of the Student Council and a member of the Harvard Model Congress. Rylee is undecided on her college selection.

*Melissa Peart (Farmington Senior High School/Farmington, N.H.) – Melissa is the reigning New Hampshire Division III Player of the Year in volleyball, and played basketball for Farmington. She also volunteered at the Rochester food kitchen. Melissa is undecided on her college selection.

*Kathareeya Tonyai (Conant High School/Jaffrey, N.H.) – Kathareeya was on the track and field and field hockey teams, and was also the vice president of the National Honor Society. Kathareeya, whose parents are from Thailand, will attend Trinity College.

*Lori Merlo (Bedford High School/Bedford, Mass.) – Lori ran cross country and track, and was the founder and president of the school’s Red Cross Club. She is also a Eucharist minister and volunteered for the Miracle League of Massachusetts and the Bedford Food Pantry. Lori will attend Marist College.

*Nicholas Clark (Nashoba Valley Technical High School/Groton, Mass.) – Nicholas was on the football and track and field teams, and volunteered for Homes for Out Troops. An Eagle Scout, Nicholas will attend Ithaca College.

The Class-A Short-Season New York-Penn League and its member clubs are proud to announce that the league’s philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets.

Now in its fifth year, the 2013 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligble. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

The scholarship contest will consist of two stages – a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the divisional/final round. The 14 finalists will be separated by the division of the team they represent. The winning application from each of the NYPL’s three divisions (McNamara, Pinckney and Stedler) will receive the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists will receive a $250 book award.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are committed to giving back to our local communities and our annual scholarship competition has become one of the anchors of our community outreach program over the past five years,” said Ben J. The deadline to submit applications to the Jammers front office is June 28, 2013. Each club’s winner, including the three $2,500 scholarship recipients, will be selected in late July and honored at a game in August.

Spikes, NYPL team up for Scholarship Program

Graduating high school seniors from Central PA to compete for $2,500 top prize

The State College Spikes and the New York-Penn League are proud to announce that the league’s philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets, including Central PA.

Now in its fifth year, the 2013 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact that the Spikes and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

The scholarship contest will consist of two stages – a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to the Spikes, with one applicant chosen to advance to the divisional round to represent State College. The Spikes’ nominee will then compete against representatives from the Auburn Doubledays, Batavia Muckdogs, Jamestown Jammers, Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Williamsport Crosscutters for the Pinckney Division’s $2,500 top prize. Any finalist who does not win the divisional prize will receive a $250 book award.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are committed to giving back to our local communities and our annual scholarship competition has become one of the anchors of our community outreach program over the past five years,” said Ben J. CCSNH, Fisher Cats Foundation Award $5,000 to Local Schools

Eight schools recognized for perfect Reading Challenge participation

New-Hampshire-Fisher-Cats-logo-2013The Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH) and the Fisher Cats Foundation awarded $5,000 to local schools on Monday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. A total of eight schools were honored on the field for having one-hundred-percent of their students complete the Fisher Cats Reading Challenge presented by the Community College System of New Hampshire during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The eight schools from across New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts were recognized as finFisher-Cats-Foundation-logo-2013alists during Monday’s ceremony for having every student complete the challenge by reading five books outside their normal school curriculum. Each school was entered into a drawing to win one of three cash prizes, totaling $5,000, from the Fisher Cats Foundation. Salisbury Elementary School earned the top prize of $3,000; Smyth Road Elementary and St. John Regional Junior High School  were each awarded a $1,000 prize for their all-encompassing efforts during the challenge.

Their dedication shows a true commitment to the improvement of their education both in the classroom and at home.”

“New Hampshire’s Community Colleges are proud to be part of this effort to highlight the importance of literacy to New Hampshire students,” said Shannon Reid, Director of Communications for CCSNH. “The Reading Challenge involves students, parents, and teachers in an effort that is both purposeful and fun. The support of the Fisher Cats organization adds a special dimension and reward for the students who earn tickets in recognition of their reading achievement and for the schools that took home prizes.”

On Monday night, faculty members of Ashby Elementary School, Errol Consolidated School, Maple Avenue Elementary School, Milan Village School, Russell Elementary School, Smyth Road Elementary School, Salisbury Elementary School, and St. Joseph Regional Junior High School were all celebrated for their success.

During the school year, the Fisher Cats and CCSNH reached out to more than 55,000 students in approximately 150 schools to present the CCSNH Reading Challenge. Students needed to read at least five books outside of their normal school curriculum in order to earn individual recognition at a Fisher Cats game. Upon completing the challenge, each student received a pair of tickets, courtesy of CCSNH, to a Fisher Cats Reading Challenge game and the opportunity to participate in a pre-game parade around the field.

New York’s 529 College Savings Plan and the Muckdogs Partnering for Essay Contest

The Batavia Muckdogs and New York’s 529 College Savings Program Direct Plan have announced that they are once again partnering together with an essay contest for local students and children. The goal of the essay contest is to have kids submit an original essay on the topic of “what would you like to be when you grow up”.  The Batavia Muckdogs front office staff will read over all entries, selecting the three (3) most compelling submissions. The three winners and their parents/guardians will then receive complementary tickets to the Tuesday, September 3, 2013 Muckdogs’ home game at 7:05pm. In addition to receiving a free ticket, the winners will receive a back-to-school backpack with supplies, courtesy of New York’s 529 College Savings Program Direct Plan. The three selected winners will also have the opportunity to throw out the honorary first pitches for the game.

Eligibility:   The contest is open to all children who attend a school in the local communities surrounding Batavia. This includes schools in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans, Erie, and Niagara counties.

Contest Period:   Students may enter submissions anytime from this point forward until August 16, 2013. At that point the Batavia Muckdogs front office staff will begin reading submissions and selecting the three (3) winners.

How to Enter:   To enter, participants must submit their essay (approximately 100 words) either by mailing it to Dwyer Stadium or dropping it off at the stadium in person. The mailing address is: Dwyer Stadium, 299 Bank Street, Batavia, NY. Along with the essay submission, we ask that participants include their: full name; school; date of birth; and telephone number.
