Scrappers Launch Healthy Kids Challenge

NILES, OH – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers have launched Scrappy’s Healthy Challenge, presented by the Eastwood Mall Complex with partners Humility of Mary Health Partners, M.V.P.B.A. Scrappers Backers and ComDoc, to encourage physically active and healthy lifestyles.

Scrappy’s Healthy Challenge follows the 5-2-1-0 message: 5 — or more servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 — hours or less recreational screen time, 1 — hour or more of physical activity, 0 — sugary drinks, more water and lowfat milk (adopted from Let’s Go! www.letsgo.org).

The Scrappers are working with local schools to participate in the program. For 21 Days, students log their choices into a journal. All of the students that complete Scrappy’s Healthy Challenge will receive a ticket to go to a Scrappers game during the 2013 season. At the game they will receive a special 5-2-1-0 Scrappy’s Healthy Challenge Completed T-Shirt and special recognition at the game.

DIVERSITY DAY ON CONEY ISLAND – AUGUST 19th

Brooklyn NY, August 14, 2013 – Last week, vandals defaced the statue of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese, located outside MCU Park in Coney Island with hateful words and symbols which have since been removed. In light of these recent events, the Cyclones and Alliance for Coney Island will join together with community leaders to host Diversity Day in Coney Island, for what will be a historic doubleheader on Monday, August 19th in conjunction with the Coney Island Flicks on the Beach screening of “42” later in the evening

Prior to the Brooklyn Cyclones taking on the Staten Island Yankees in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 PM, the Cyclones, along with The Jackie Robinson Foundation, The Jackie Robinson Little League, Major League Baseball and other local community leaders will host a rededication ceremony for the Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese statue, which stands as a monument to these men of “courage and conviction” as engraved on the base of the statue which was originally erected in November 2005.

“The events of last week were both heartbreaking and incomprehensible” said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen. “But we are trying to turn the negative and disgusting actions of one person into a night of unity and understanding for an entire community. Over 60 years ago Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese stood resolute in the face of bigotry and hatred, and in a much smaller way we are trying to do the same thing.”

Following the ceremony and baseball game, there will be a special screening of the Warner Bros. movie “42” as part of the “Flicks on the Beach” Series presented by Alliance for Coney Island, Rooftop Films and NYC & Company. Guests will be invited to watch the critically-acclaimed film on a 40-foot screen on the sand of Coney Island near West 10th Street.

“We are proud to be screening the monumental film ‘42’ which provides a biography of Brooklyn hero Jackie Robinson. A silver lining to this offensive act is that Coney Island can band together and commemorate Robinson’s legacy during Diversity Day, and celebrate the strength of our community and the history of Brooklyn,” said Johanna Zaki, Alliance for Coney Island Director of Operations.

Join us at MCU Park on Wednesday, August 13th as we collect food for City Harvest at the front gates of the ballpark.  Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation to the ballpark and will receive a raffle ticket in exchange for their donation.  Those who donate will be eligible for  prizes including signed items, $50 gift cards from MCU and more.

Can’t make it to the park?  You can still donate to the virtual food drive HERE .  A $20 donation feeds 11 people for a week.

Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Game Raises $30,000 Locally

BURLINGTON, VT – The Vermont Lake Monsters are pleased to announce that $30,000 has been raised for the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, as part of the June 29th event at Centennial Field. The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, made up of Veterans and Active-Duty Soldiers and Marines who have lost a limb(s) in post 9/11 combat, tour nationally to raise awareness of the sacrifices of these brave soldiers, while giving communities across our great country an opportunity to show their support of our true heroes.

“It was an honor to assist in the creation of the Burlington, VT event.”, says Vermont Lake Monsters Vice President Kyle Bostwick. “The outpouring of support in both preparation and participation of this event, that showcases the sacrifices that these soldiers have made should make us all be proud to be a part of our community.”

Monies for the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team were raised through a two day event that was highlighted by an exhibition softball game featuring former Major League Pitchers Bill “Spaceman” Lee and Len Whitehouse, Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling, Silver Screen Actor and Vermont resident Luis Guzman, actor, producer, and writer Rusty “The Logger” Dewees, country music star Jamie Lee Thurston, and Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger.

In addition substantial revenues for the event were raised through generous donations by The Pizzagalli Foundation, Jolley Associates, Farrell Distributing, Yankee Medical, Select Design, Lake Champlain Cruises, and REM Development.

A ceremonial check presentation will occur today with WWAST manager David Van Sleet in attendance, July 29th, prior to the Vermont Lake Monsters home game against the Lowell Spinners at Centennial Field at 7:05PM.

Muckdogs to host youth camp!

Due to a tremendous response from the community, the Muckdogs 2013 Youth Baseball Camp held on August 6th and 7th is completely filled up and registration is now closed. We will accept any mailed registration forms post-marked on July 30th. For those who did not sign up in time, please keep an eye out for the Muckdogs 2nd Annual Youth Baseball Camp in 2014.

Join us at Dwyer Stadium August 6th, 7th and 8th for our youth baseball camp!

Kids aged 6-14 will receive two days of on field instruction from the Muckdogs players and coaches on August 6th & 7th from 9am – 12pm, then on August 8th campers will be able to come back to Dwyer for a private autograph signing with the team 30 minutes before the gates open (5:30pm) and then be recognized on the field prior to the Muckdogs game vs. the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Rays affiliate).

Campers will also recieve a special t-shirt not available in the team store, a camp photo, two tickets to the August 8th game as well as daily lunch, all for ONLY $70!

Jamestown Jammers to Hold Can Food Drive

Jamestown, NY- For the fourth straight year, the Jamestown Jammers will team up with the Jamestown Chapter of the Credit Union Association of New York for a canned food drive. New this year, Harley-Davidson of Jamestown has joined the event to bring extra support to the Community. This drive will benefit the St. Susan Center in Jamestown and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Youth Organization in Dunkirk.

The food drive will take place at a Jammers game on July 18th against the Connecticut Tigers at 7:05 p.m. Items will start being collected at the gates when they open at 6:00pm. A Harley-Davidson trailer will be on site at Diethrick Park to collect non-perishable food items. All fans who donate will have a chance to win a wide array of prizes; the more items fans donate the more chances they will have to WIN! The prizes include amongst other items, $250 worth of Harley-Davidson items, autographed balls, and team signed bats.

Last year, the Jammers and the local credit unions combined to collect 500 pounds of food to benefit the St. Susan Center, which provides hot, nutritious meals to those in need and the CYO which also helps feed the hungry through its food closet program. In the past three years, over 1,250 pounds of food have been donated.

This year, the participating Credit Unions from the Jamestown Chapter are; Affinity One FCU, Cattaraugus County EFCU, Greater Chautauqua FCU, Inner Lakes FCU, Jamestown Area Community FCU, Jamestown Post Office ECU, Southern Chautauqua FCU, and SUNY Fredonia FCU to collect food for both food banks.

Tickets are available for next Thursday’s game at all of the Credit Union locations listed above, plus at Harley-Davidson of Jamestown’s store front. Fans need to bring their tickets to the park along with at least one non-perishable food item for admission to the game and a chance at the prizes being given out.

The Jamestown Jammers are a short-season Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team is owned by Rich Products Corporation, which also owns two other minor league teams. For more information about the Jammers or a complete schedule of games and promotions, visit www.jamestownjammers.com.

The State College Spikes are partnering with B94.5 to give fans the chance to help those displaced in the Waupelani Drive fire with a donation drive at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The drive will take place on Tuesday during the Spikes’ 7:05 p.m. game against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians).

Fans can bring their donations inside the ballpark, with collection areas located at the ballpark gates. Items of particular need to the families affected by the fire include gift cards to area businesses, brand new clothing and diapers for infants and mothers, as well as books and toys for children ages 0-11. Any fan wishing to make a monetary donation towards the drive should contact the State College American Red Cross.

In addition, 95.3 FM 3WZ will be collecting gift cards at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park gates prior to Monday’s 7:05 p.m. game against Mahoning Valley. 3WZ will also collect gift cards at their 865 Benner Pike studios from 9-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at their live broadcasts from both the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts and the People’s Choice Festival.

The donation drive will be part of the fun at the ballpark on Tuesday as the first 500 fans will receive cool Spikes t-shirts, presented by P.J. Harrigan’s, on T-Shirt Tuesday. Plus, 16 oz. Yuengling and Yuengling Light draft beers will be available for just $2.50 apiece during the Yuengling Happy Hour from 6-7 p.m.

TROY, NY – This ValleyCats Season is sure to be one of the most exciting to date! The ValleyCats have partnered with BlueShield of Northeastern New York to welcome the Healthy Zone Concessions to the Joseph L. Bruno stadium.

Rather than a traditional vendor at the stadium, the Healthy Zone Concessions promises to live up to BlueShield’s slogan “Healthy Changes Everything”. The Healthy Zone will provide spectators with healthy snack and meal options such as apple nachos, salads and wraps, Greek yogurt and other healthy treats.

“The athletes aren’t the only people in the stadium that we want to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Brian O’Grady, vice president of BlueShield. “Our hope is that the Healthy Zone Concessions will encourage spectators to take advantage of healthier meal and snack options while attending a baseball game.”

“Each season, we strive to provide our fans with healthy alternatives to the traditional ballpark fare,” said ValleyCats General Manager Rick Murphy. “Our partnership with BlueShield has allowed us to increase the variety of healthy food options at “The Joe” while promoting healthy living.”

‘Cats to host ALS Fundraiser, with special guest Tommy John

TROY, NY – The Tri-City ValleyCats have partnered with Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the National ALS Registry and the ALS Association to hold a fundraiser at “The Joe” on Saturday, July 6. Former Yankee great, Tommy John will be in attendance as part of a meet & greet opportunity and ALS Fundraiser Dinner in the ValleyCats Picnic Pavilion. Proceeds from this dinner will be donated to the ALS Association.

This event is part of a season-long partnership between Minor League Baseball and the ALS Association to strikeout Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Part of this initiative is to support the men and women serving in our armed forces, as those in the military are twice as likely to develop Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

The ValleyCats will pay tribute to our military heroes throughout the July 4th homestand and help raise awareness of Lou Gehrig’s Disease as the National ALS Registry will be on hand with a table for each of these games, including Veterans Night on July 5th. The National ALS Registry is a research project that may help scientists find the cause, treatment and cure for the disease, which is fatal in an average of just two to five years.

Tickets for the fundraiser are just $30 and are limited. Included is a meet & greet with Tommy John from 4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., entry into the ALS Fundraiser Dinner from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., a premium box ticket to that night’s game vs. the Lowell Spinners, a ValleyCats cap and a commemorative ALS camo ball.

Brown’s Brewing Company will also be joining the ValleyCats to support this cause as a proud participant in Ales for ALS, a national fundraising project to help discover a treatment for ALS. Brown’s has brewed a special, limited edition batch of Iron Horse Ale in honor of legendary Yankee great, Lou Gehrig. In the spirit of the its baseball namesake and in conjunction with the Strike Out ALS event on July 6th, Iron Horse Ale will be exclusively available at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium during ValleyCats games while supply lasts. Brown’s Brewing Company and the Tri-City ValleyCats are donating a portion of the proceeds of Iron Horse Ale to the 501c3 nonprofit  ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI), the world’s leading ALS research organization. ValleyCats, First Niagara partner on Community Spotlight

TROY, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats have partnered with First Niagara on a season-long community initiative known as the “Community Spotlight.” During each of the ValleyCats 38 home games, a different nonprofit organization will be highlighted with in-stadium exposure throughout the night.

“First Niagara is thrilled to sponsor the Tri-City ValleyCats Community Spotlight initiative,” said First Niagara Eastern New York Market Leader Nina Tyzik. “This program provides the community with an opportunity to learn about all the great things the Capital Region’s nonprofit organizations are doing, and gives these organizations tremendous exposure.”

As part of the ‘Community Spotlight,” during each ValleyCats home game a certain non-profit organization will be recognized on the video board, receive a premier tabling opportunity on the concourse and 10 tickets for their staff and supporters to enjoy the game.

“First Niagara’s commitment to the community makes them the perfect partner for the Community Spotlight Program,” said ValleyCats Vice President/General Manager Rick Murphy. “Through this partnership, the 38 nonprofits will be able to receive great exposure in front of a captive audience throughout the 2013 season.”

The 38 nonprofit organizations include Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, all of which are being recognized during the ValleyCats opening homestand, June 17-19. NY-Penn League Charitable Foundation Announces 2013 Scholarship Competition

The Class-A Short-Season New York-Penn League and its member clubs are proud to announce that the league’s philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets.

Now in its fifth year, the 2013 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligble. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

The scholarship contest will consist of two stages – a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the divisional/final round. The 14 finalists will be separated by the division of the team they represent. The winning application from each of the NYPL’s three divisions (McNamara, Pinckney and Stedler) will receive the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists will receive a $250 book award.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are committed to giving back to our local communities and our annual scholarship competition has become one of the anchors of our community outreach program over the past five years,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “In addition to selecting those students who meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, we enjoy being able to assist those who have enjoyed many special memories with their hometown team over the years.”

High school seniors interested in entering the 2013 Scholarship Contest can obtain the official application from their local NYPL club, or by visiting the league’s official website, New York-Penn League.com.

The deadline to submit applications to the nearest NYPL team is June 28, 2013. Each club’s winner, including the three $2,500 scholarship recipients, will be selected in late July and honored at a game in August.

The New York-Penn League and its 14 member clubs created the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in 2003. The mission of the Foundation is to provide focus and support for the collective and individual charitable and community efforts of the New York-Penn League, its Clubs, and their staff.

The deadline to submit applications to the Jammers front office is June 28, 2013. Each club’s winner, including the three $2,500 scholarship recipients, will be selected in late July and honored at a game in August.

The New York-Penn League and its 14 member clubs created the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in 2003. The mission of the Foundation is to provide focus and support for the collective and individual charitable and community efforts of the New York-Penn League, its Clubs, and their staff.

Spikes, NYPL team up for Scholarship Program

Graduating high school seniors from Central PA to compete for $2,500 top prize

The State College Spikes and the New York-Penn League are proud to announce that the league’s philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets, including Central PA.

Now in its fifth year, the 2013 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact that the Spikes and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

The scholarship contest will consist of two stages – a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to the Spikes, with one applicant chosen to advance to the divisional round to represent State College. The Spikes’ nominee will then compete against representatives from the Auburn Doubledays, Batavia Muckdogs, Jamestown Jammers, Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Williamsport Crosscutters for the Pinckney Division’s $2,500 top prize. Any finalist who does not win the divisional prize will receive a $250 book award.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are committed to giving back to our local communities and our annual scholarship competition has become one of the anchors of our community outreach program over the past five years,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “In addition to selecting those students who meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, we enjoy being able to assist those who have enjoyed many special memories with their hometown team over the years.”

High school seniors interested in entering the 2013 Scholarship Contest can obtain the official application from the Spikes online at State College Spikes.com or in person at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Interested seniors may also visit the league’s official website, New York-Penn League.com.

The deadline to submit applications to the Spikes is June 28, 2013. The Spikes’ representative will be selected in late July and honored at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park during a Spikes home game in August.
