Lexington Legends win MiLB John Henry Moss Community Service Award

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – Minor League Baseball today named the Lexington Legends the recipient of the fifth annual John Henry Moss Community Service Award. The award was created in 2013 by Minor League Baseball in honor of the late John Henry Moss, who founded what would become the South Atlantic League in 1959 and headed the circuit until 2007. The Legends will receive their award at the Baseball Winter Meetings Banquet on Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida.

 

“The Lexington Legends are incredibly proud to receive the 2017 John Henry Moss Community Service Award, and furthermore, we are honored to represent the South Atlantic League and its former President, John Henry Moss. One of the Legends’ core values is to give the community more than they expect, and we feel it has truly been our honor to serve Central Kentucky,” said Legends President & CEO Andy Shea. “The 2017 season was a team effort, from the front office, to the Legends players, to the Kansas City Royals, we came together and created a unique and well-rounded outreach plan. Our “Stache Tank” program led the way by providing elementary, middle and high school students in underserved communities the chance to develop entrepreneurial ideas in the form of Legends giveaways, concessions items and gameday planning. We look forward to continuing this impactful and important tradition of community involvement for many years to come.”

The Legends’ community leadership and support are truly remarkable and it is my honor to present them with this award.”

 

In addition to the award, Minor League Baseball Charities will make a $2,500 donation on behalf of the Legends to the University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, as they work to improve the health of the elderly through research, education, outreach and clinical programs.

 

The Legends’ staff strives to give the Lexington and Central Kentucky communities more than they expect, and in 2017, the Legends provided $1,083,214 in monetary and in-kind donations to Central Kentucky and the surrounding regions, a 21 percent increase over their 2016 donation total. In their 17-year history, the Legends have donated more than $13 million in monetary and in-kind contributions to non-profit organizations and communities in the region.

 

In recognition of their commitment to the community, the Legends claimed the South Atlantic League Community Service Award in 2017 and 2013 and the South Atlantic League Club Merit Award in 2016. One hundred percent of the Legends’ front office staff serves or participates with at least one charitable or civic organization.

 

During the season, the Legends feature one local non-profit organization at each of their 70 home games. The participating charities receive a table on the concourse, a pre-game interview on the field and an in-game radio interview to help promote their cause. Additionally, the Legends use Whitaker Bank Ballpark to host a long list of charitable events, including fundraisers for breast cancer research, the Salvation Army, the American Heart Association, military appreciation events and a police versus firefighters fundraising softball game.

 

The Legends go to great lengths to serve the youth of their community by providing assistance to several educational initiatives which includes a “Hit the Books” reading program, a STEM/STLP based program and Legends Character Awards with local elementary schools. Also included is an entrepreneurial project-based marketing and promotional learning unit called “Stache Tank” with a local elementary, middle and high school, where students are challenged to come up with business pitches for a specific project within budget limitations. These projects are then carried out and come to fruition during the Legends baseball season. Additionally, their mascots, Big L and Pee Wee, made over 200 appearances around Central Kentucky in 2017.

Working for Peanuts, RiverDogs Make Donation to Muscular Dystrophy Association

CHARLESTON, S.C.- As part of their continued efforts to salute a ballpark icon, the Charleston RiverDogs have announced a donation of $5,000 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in honor of Anthony Wright, aka “Tony the Peanut Man.”

“Tony brought energy and charisma to The Joe that was sorely missed this past season,” said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. “As a staff, we wanted to create an ongoing message associated with Tony, and combining that message with this year’s peanut sales at the park was a good start.”

“We are thrilled to accept this donation from the Charleston RiverDogs to help provide the funds needed to find treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related diseases that severely limit strength and mobility,” said MDA Director of Business Development, Megan Relford. “The dedication of this organization to the MDA’s mission, as well as Tony’s memory is unwavering, and this donation will go a long way to help countless families living with muscle disease right here in the Lowcountry.”

On April 12, the RiverDogs tipped their sweetgrass caps to Tony during their opening week of the 21st season of baseball at The Joe, where Wright became a local favorite as a longtime peanut vendor. The RiverDogs celebrated the evening with Tony’s songs, peanuts, and their best impressions of his signature smile as the Charleston community celebrated the life of the beloved figure, who passed away shortly following the 2016 campaign.

As a season-long tribute to Tony, the RiverDogs also tossed out bags of his famous boiled peanuts to the crowd during the seventh inning stretch at each home game. The club also committed to donating a portion of their peanut sale proceeds to the MDA of which Tony was a proud supporter.

Fireflies Reading Program Receives National Recognition

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has awarded the Columbia Fireflies Reading Program – an incentive-based literacy initiative presented by Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital – a certificate of commendation as an outstanding program deserving of recognition at the national level.

The Reading Program was created to encourage and enhance literacy among the youth of the Midlands. The program is completely free to students and educators. During the academic year, the program is run through schools, and, during the summer months, the program continues through local libraries. Students are required to reach goals set by educators while they “Read Around the Bases,” creating a customizable incentive-based program to encourage children to read. Each student’s progress is tracked, and once they make it to “Home Plate” (complete the program), students are rewarded with a complimentary ticket to a Fireflies game, a voucher for a free meal, a special gift from the Fireflies and a free ticket to EdVenture Children’s Museum.

“The Columbia Fireflies are proud to have been honored with this formal commendation for our efforts to enhance literacy through our Reading Program,” said Fireflies team President John Katz. “Our partnership with Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital has been instrumental in our ability to grow so rapidly and to impact the lives of so many children.”

In just the second year of the program, the Fireflies reached over 65,000 students from 153 schools during the spring session, and nearly 25,000 more this summer through 4 county libraries, the YMCA and other child-centric organizations.

Kyle Williamson, the Fireflies Reading Program Manager, works closely with educators and librarians to provide children across the Midlands with incentives to hit their reading goals, develop a love for reading and for the use of information technologies. After summer break, the Reading Program had been implemented across the region in Richland, Lexington, Oconee, Newberry, Fairfield, Lancaster, Kershaw, Florence, Williamsburg, Calhoun, Sumter, Orangeburg, Beaufort, and Barnwell Counties.

“Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital firmly believes in the importance of literacy. Reading is a strong component of children’s ability to grow and understand the world around them. Forming a partnership with the Fireflies reading program is another way of being an advocate for children and their overall well-being that helps our entire community,” said Diane Bagnal-Moody, administrative director of Children’s Hospital.

Delegates of the AASL Affiliate Assembly nominate specific programs across the country, and the South Carolina Association of School Librarians delegate, Cindy Symonds, brought the Fireflies’ efforts to the national stage.

The Fireflies kicked off the program at the local schools and libraries with Mason, the team’s mascot, making an appearance to get the children excited about reading. Fireflies players joined in after the season began and would head out in their uniforms and read with students at various schools.

The mission of AASL is to empower leaders to transform teaching and learning. Audrey Church, president of AASL, explained that this group works to ensure that all members of the school library field collaborate to connect learners with ideas and information to prepare students for life-long learning and informed decision-making.

RiverDogs, Fox Music Partner for Piano Grand Unveiling at MUSC Health University Hospital

CHARLESTON, S.C.- The Charleston RiverDogs and Fox Music have partnered once again to promote the benefits of music in the Lowcountry. The Charleston club and Fox Music paired up to donate a piano to the MUSC Health University Hospital, jointly unveiling the contribution in the main hospital lobby on Tuesday afternoon.

The donation is a continuation of the RiverDogs and Fox Music’s joint effort to foster the musical disciplines throughout Charleston while benefitting the club’s partner in MUSC Health. Fox provided a piano played by Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg on the RiverDogs’ Opening Night in 2016 before the piece of equipment was donated to the music department of nearby Burke High School.

Fox Music again provided the equipment as the Mayor tickled the ivories to open the baseball season in 2017, and will provide the Yamaha U1 vertical piano, the choice professional piano for concert pianist, professors, and venues around the world.

 

“The ability to combine the RiverDogs Opening Night festivities with Mayor Tecklenburg and the city of Charleston, MUSC Health and one of Charleston’s successful family businesses speaks volumes to the strength of our community,” said President and General Manager Dave Echols.

“We’re thrilled to support this worthy endeavor,” said Joseph Fox of Fox Music. “Our roots with MUSC Health go back to over 40 years ago when doctors from the hospital would stop by our downtown location on break to use our practice rooms as a community space to get away, and this has shaped how we view our stores to this day.”

“MUSC has many community partners that sometimes come together in unsuspecting ways,” said Caroline O’Neal of MUSC. “Today, a few of our partners joined hands to enhance a space on our campus where many patients, families, visitors, and MUSC employees spend time – our hospital lobby. The piano was unveiled at the main hospital lobby with Charles and Joseph Fox in attendance from Fox Music along with technician Joe Marlow. Echols and lovable mascot Charlie T. RiverDog represented the Charleston ballclub while Dr. David J. Cole, M.D., FACS, President of MUSC and Dr. Patrick J. Cawley, M.D., CEO of MUSC Health among other leadership from MUSC were present.

RiverDogs Host Fourth Annual Trick-or-Treat Movie Night Down at The Joe

CHARLESTON, S.C.- With Halloween just around the corner, the Charleston RiverDogs are getting in the spirit of the season with the fourth annual Trick-or-Treat Movie Night featuring Disney’s “Moana” from 6-9pm on Friday, October 27 at Joe Riley Park.

The night begins with trick-or-treating around the Riley Park concourse starting at 6pm, followed by the showing of Disney’s 2016 animated hit starting at 7 on the video board. Admission for the event is $5 a person or a donation of five or more canned food items for donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank. Members of the MUSC Health Kid’s Club also get in free.

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to dress up as a “Moana” character and young fans will have the opportunity for a meet & greet with Moana and enjoy a fire juggling show as part of the evening’s festivities.

BlueClaws Upgrade Fundraising Options for 2018 Season

We’ve enhanced our Fundriasing Program heading into 2018!

LAKEWOOD, NJ – The BlueClaws have upgraded their fundraising program heading into 2018, crafting improved and varied offerings compatible with all types of groups and organizations.

This year, the BlueClaws Fundraising Program has been expanded to include two versions that enable groups to raise money by buying and selling either 125 or 250 tickets. Plus, groups will have a chance to raise additional funds by volunteering in a FirstEnergy Park concession stand during a game.

Buster’s 250 Fundraising Program – In this program, groups purchase 250 tickets at $7 per ticket and re-sell them for $11, making $4 per ticket. A maximum of 20 volunteers can work a BlueClaws concession stand, earning $37.50 per person, an additional $750 for the group. Through this program, groups can earn $1,750, or more with additional tickets.

Participation in the programs outlined above also gives groups the opportunity to take advantage of additional exclusive opportunities.

Youth Sports Organizations – Youth Sports Organizations that participate in the BlueClaws Fundraising Program will receive a Pre-Game Parade, the Future BlueClaws (up to 18 players run on the field with the BlueClaws for the National Anthem), Clawstars of the Game (up to 30 players can play catch on the field prior to the game), and a First Pitch for up to two members of the group. Additionally, the BlueClaws will purchase a sign at the organization’s Little League field (Program A).

Schools – Schools that participate in the BlueClaws Fundraising Program receive a Pre-Game Parade and a ceremonial first pitch. A school chorus can sing the National Anthem or God Bless America, plus the school band can perform on the field before the game. Additionally, Buster will attend an assembly at the school.

Dance & Entertainment Organizations – These groups will receive an on-field performance before the game and a table on the concourse to promote their studio and additional programs. Any pre-game performance will be posted on the BlueClaws Facebook page shortly after the performance.

SC Veterans Upstate Salute at Fluor Field on November 12th

The Drive, along with fellow Upstate Veterans Alliance partners GE, Greenville Health System and Michelin are excited to team up for the second annual SC Veterans Upstate Salute! You’re invited to join us in this free celebration on Sunday, November 12th at Fluor Field, as we will honor our local veterans with a night full of entertainment.

The event will begin at 5:00 PM, with the Field Street gates at Fluor Field opening at 4:00. Highlights of the evening include a concert from country music star Craig Morgan, a 21-gun salute, parachuters, an aerial flyover and opportunities to meet community agencies supporting veterans and their families. The night will conclude with a spectacular fireworks show. The concession stands at Fluor Field will be open throughout the evening.

RiverDogs Lend Helping Hand to Oklahoma

CHARLESTON, SC — General Manager Dave Echols has announced that 15 percent of all profits of Charleston RiverDogs merchandise purchased through MiLB.com will be donated to the Oklahoma City Red Cross, as part of Minor League Baseball’s “15 for 15” initiative to raise funds to assist those affected by the recent storms in Oklahoma. The donations will run until June 17.

A total of 51 minor league teams — including the RiverDogs — are participating in the endeavor to assist those in the Sooner State that were affected by recent tornados.

“The Charleston RiverDogs are pleased to participate in this endeavor,” said Echols. “It’s very important for us to help during this devastating and unfortunate time in Oklahoma.”

Legends Helping “Restore the Shore”

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends and the Lakewood BlueClaws are South Atlantic League rivals on the baseball field, but the Legends are enthusiastically supporting the New Jersey-based BlueClaws on their “Restore the Shore” campaign in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The Legends purchased “Restore the Shore” t-shirts in support of the efforts by the Blue Claws to help victims of the super storm. The campaign will continue through Memorial Day. While the BlueClaws are working closely with individuals and businesses in their area, support is welcome from anywhere. Atlantic Physical Therapy and Ergo clothing are sponsoring the campaign.

“Supporting the BlueClaws in the Restore the Shore efforts was a no-brainer,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends’ director of community relations and special events. “As a member of the South Atlantic League baseball family, we wish we were able to do more to help those affected. The hope is that our contribution to our friends in Lakewood and surrounding areas will highlight the importance of reaching out and supporting communities outside of your own, and will encourage other teams and individuals to do the same. We are grateful for the opportunity to be involved.”

Each Friday until Memorial Day, participants will wear the t-shirts, and each person will make a donation every Friday. Details are available at BlueClaws.com/Restore.

Businesses that participate will be honored in a ceremony at a 2013 BlueClaws game.

“Obviously, there were so many of our friends and neighbors impacted significantly by Hurricane Sandy,” said Dave Manzo, co-founder of Atlantic Physical Therapy Center. “Through this program, we can raise money in a fun way over the next several months.”

In early 2013, those impacted by the storm will be able to fill out an application, and donations will be made to as many families as possible.

“We have an opportunity to help many re-build after Sandy’s devastation,” said BlueClaws General Manager Geoff Brown. “We’re looking forward to helping, and we hope that there are a lot of businesses and families that can help us make an impact.” ###

Legends Expand “Dancing with the Students” Program to Russell Cave Elementary; 2nd School in Fayette County Public Schools

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – Fourth grade students at Russell Cave Elementary will put on their dancing shoes and take a new approach to Arts and Humanities curriculum through the Legends community partnership with the not for profit “Dancing with the Students,” based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

 

“Dancing with the Students” came to Lexington in the Spring of 2017 via Lexington Legends Secretary and Principal Sue Martinelli Shea, who founded the non-profit organization in 2005. The first students involved with the program in Lexington were sixth, seventh and eighth graders at Crawford Middle School, and the expansion of the program will mirror the first, having Russell Cave Elementary fourth graders also competing in 10 weeks of dance class and 9 weeks of instruction with the 10th week culminating in a grand finale competition. The students will be taught in two sessions by Arthur Murray trained dance teacher Rae Mickelwait and will learn four dances: Waltz, Tango, Merengue, and Swing. The first class will be October 9 & 10, 2017 at 9:30am with the grand finale slated for December 18, 2017.

 

“I started the non-profit, “Dancing with the Students” in 2005 in Philadelphia in one school” said Martinelli Shea. “My intent was to teach manners and respect to students while having fun learning to dance. Bringing “Dancing with the Students” to Lexington, Kentucky is a dream come true for me. In the Spring of 2017, our wonderful dance teacher, Rae Mickelwait, taught two classes of Ballroom Dancing at Crawford Middle School. This Fall, DWTS will expand to Russell Cave Elementary School.” Marinelli Shea continues, “I was raised by parents who stressed giving back and getting involved. I am so proud of my son, Andy Shea, who lives that through the work he does personally as well as professionally with the Lexington Legends, who are the recipient of the 2017 South Atlantic League Community Service Organization of the Year Award.”

 

This partnership expansion would not have been possible without the support of Russell Cave Elementary School administrators and educators, like Kyle Lionberger, Practical Living Teacher, who said ” [Dancing with the Students] is a great opportunity to teach our students arts & humanities in a different way. Students learn that dancing can be a lifetime activity that provides opportunity for movement, social interaction and fun while giving even the quietest students a voice.”

Arthur Murray dance instructor Rae Mickelwait added to Lionberger’s sentiments and said “I am so excited to continue to share my passion for ballroom dancing this semester with more children! Through dancing we get to convey the importance of team work and partnership, eye contact and even dressing the part for a performance. All these skills can help children on their journey to success in high school, college and beyond. I am so very blessed to be a part of “Dancing with the Students,” to be out in the community, as well as teaching at Lexington Arthur Murray.

OceanFirst Foundation Completes Home Runs for Heroes Grant Program

In nine years, the Home Runs for Heroes program has raised over $260,000.

LAKEWOOD, NJ – OceanFirst Foundation donated over $40,000 to area military-based non-profit organizations through the 2017 Home Runs for Heroes Program. The program is a partnership between the BlueClaws, OceanFirst Foundation, and Townsquare Media.

Home Runs for Heroes Grants provide financial support to charities that meet the emergency basic needs of veterans and local service men and women – active and retired – and their families during difficult times. Non-profits were paired with each inning of the game and each BlueClaws home run hit at FirstEnergy Park meant a $1,000 donation to the charity corresponding with the inning in which the home run was hit.

Home runs hit in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings meant $1,000 donations to two charities, so $43,000 was donated for the BlueClaws 29 home runs hit at FirstEnergy Park this year.

The program, which just completed its ninth season, has now raised $260,000 to area non-profits thanks to the donations of OceanFirst Foundation.

Darick Hall led the BlueClaws with seven home runs at FirstEnergy Park this year, while Brett Barbier hit four and Arquimedes Gamboa hit three. Austin Listi hit two, including a walk-off home run in the 12th inning of the final game of the season, bringing a $1,000 donation to the Citizens Veterans Advisory Committee. This was the lone BlueClaws home run hit in the ninth inning or extra innings this year.

The BlueClaws are the Jersey Shore’s top stop for affordable, family entertainment. The 2018 schedule has been released and 2018 BlueClaws ticket packages and group outings are currently on sale.

Shorebirds Present Toy Donation To Brooke’s Toy Closet

SALISBURY, MD – The Delmarva Shorebirds are proud to announce in conjunction with partners at Market Street Inn, MoJo’s, and the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, the results of the Brooke’s Toy Closet Toy Drive, held on Saturday, July 29th at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

In total, 381 items were donated by Shorebirds fans, with the Shorebirds presenting the donation to Brooke’s Toy Closet at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center recently, along with members from Market Street Inn, MoJo’s, and the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Foundation, which oversees and maintains Brooke’s Toy Closet.

Toy Donations ranged from activity books, stuffed animals, interactive toys, coloring books, books, action figures, etc. All these items will be extremely beneficial to replenishing Brooke’s Toy Closet and very much appreciated from members of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Foundation.

Brooke’s Toy Closet was started in 2014 by Brooke Mulford, a local girl who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer, in 2009, when she was 4 years old. Brooke, unfortunately, lost her battle with cancer earlier this year on June 12th. The closet is a special cabinet filled with toys, coloring books and other goodies that PRMC’s Emergency Department and Pediatrics Unit can give to children who are hospitalized. The recipients of these gifts will be able to use them when they’re in the hospital and take them home to enjoy when they are feeling better. 2017 Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge Delivers Record 180,000 Meals In Fight Against Hunger On Delmarva

SALISBURY, MD. – As part of a company commitment to hunger relief, Perdue Farms teamed with the Delmarva Shorebirds – the Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles – and three Delmarva food banks for the annual season-long 2017 Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva to deliver a record 180,000 meals across Delmarva communities.

“We’re proud of the collaboration we have with the Delmarva food banks, the Shorebirds and its fans, and the community at-large,” said Kim Nechay, executive director of The Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation. “The way in which everyone responded to the Strike Out Hunger Challenge again this year reflects the passion and commitment our communities have for helping those in need.

“We’re delighted that the Strike Out Hunger Challenge continues to provide a large platform to raise awareness about the problem of hunger on Delmarva and provide much-needed relief to those in need,” she said.

The 2017 Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva provided the forum to continue the awareness and community engagement that began with Perdue’s sponsorship of the 2011 South Atlantic League “Perdue Strike Out Hunger All-Star Game” promotions. Since then, the Shorebirds and food banks have embraced the Strike Out Hunger Challenge to generate more three quarters of a million meal equivalents for those in need on Delmarva.

“It’s amazing that the Strike Out Hunger campaign made such a significant jump (40,000 meals) over last season,” said Jimmy Sweet, assistant general manager of the Delmarva Shorebirds. “The Shorebirds look forward to working with Perdue moving forward to surpass 200,000 meals next season.”

To drive this year’s Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva, Perdue Farms issued a $15,000 challenge grant funded by the Perdue Foundation – the charitable giving arm of the company – to benefit the Eastern Shore Branch of the Maryland Food Bank, the Food Bank of Delaware and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

Each of the food banks were required to engage the Delmarva community to raise the equivalent of 10,000 meals in order to claim their equal share of the first $10,000 of the Foundation challenge grant. This included any combination of pounds of food collected, funds collected and donated, or volunteer hours throughout the duration of the Shorebirds’ season.

Additionally, Perdue also donated $10 for each time the Shorebirds’ pitchers struck out an opposing batter up to $5,000.

“Eastern Shore residents challenged by hunger continued to find support through community partnerships pledging to donate food, funds and their time through volunteerism in support of the 2017 Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge,” said Jennifer Small, managing director of the Eastern Shore branch of the Maryland Food Bank. “Our collaborative efforts have helped provide Maryland’s hungry with more than 260,000 meals. This initiative remains a pivotal part of the Maryland Food Banks’ ability to meet the daily needs of those who struggle to feed their families.”

As Chad Robinson, director of strategic initiatives for the Food Bank of Delaware in Milford, explains, “Strike Out Hunger has been a vital part of summer for the Food Bank of Delaware. The challenge from Perdue and the Delmarva Shorebirds helps us to ensure that we are able to feed hungry Delawareans throughout the summer months, when donations can be low. It also presents a great opportunity for families to have an easy way to give back, as they enjoy America’s greatest pastime.”

Charmin Horton, branch manager of the Foodbank of the Eastern Shore in Tasley, Va., said the partnership helps provided much needed service to more than 12,000 people. “Our long-term partnership with Perdue and now the Shorebirds has enabled us to provide much-needed food and programs to those facing food insecurities here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. These programs provide meals and nutrition education to families, children and seniors who are currently facing issues of hunger.”

PRMC’S Drive-Thru Flu Clinic Returns on Thursday, October 12 for a 23rd Season

Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Drive-Thru Flu Clinic is returning for a 23rd season on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Arthur W. Perdue (Shorebirds) Stadium at the intersection of Route 50 and Hobbs Road in Salisbury, Maryland from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Vaccinations will be administered to individuals 13 years of age or older (13-17 please bring a parent or legal guardian to sign consent). A physician’s order is not necessary. A donation of $10.00 per vaccination is requested (cash only; exact amount is appreciated).

Flu vaccinations are encouraged for persons over the age of 65, people with heart or lung disorders, immunosuppressant diseases or diabetes. Participants are encouraged to wear a short sleeved shirt that will provide easy access to the upper arm.

Lexington Legends named 2017 Community Service Organization of the Year by South Atlantic League

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – The Lexington Legends have been named the 2017 Community Service Organization of the Year by the South Atlantic League, which recognizes a club’s outstanding, on-going commitment to charitable service, philanthropy and leadership within their community. The award is one of the league’s Outstanding Achievement Awards, which are announced annually following the conclusion of the regular season. In the five seasons in which the award has been given, the Legends have won twice, previously winning the inaugural award in 2013.

Throughout the 17 years of their history, the Legends contributed a total of more than $13 million to hundreds of charitable organizations in central and eastern Kentucky. The 2017 season donation total tops close to $1.1 million, a 21% increase in community support from the 2016 season. The Legends Community Organization of the Night program puts a charitable organization in the spotlight at every home game, and numerous special events and fund-raisers are held at Whitaker Bank Ballpark throughout the year.

 

In addition, the Legends have established partnerships with Chambers of Commerce in central and eastern Kentucky and have supported and welcomed youth baseball teams and coaches, religious organizations and other non-profit entities throughout the region.

 

“Being involved in the community is not only part of the Lexington Legends philosophy and mission statement, but it is also a part of the life of each individual that works 12 months a year representing the Legends,” said Legends President and CEO Andy Shea. “Every single employee works diligently with the community to provide a one of a kind, clean, safe, and family-oriented experience at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. It’s an honor to be recognized by our peers in the South Atlantic League for this prestigious award.”
Each of the 14 South Atlantic League teams, along with field managers and umpires, participated in the voting for the South Atlantic League Outstanding Achievement Awards. The Legends will now be nominated for the Minor League Baseball John Henry Moss Community Service Award, which honors the founder of the South Atlantic League for his dedication and charitable service to baseball and his community during his 50-year tenure as a league president. Moss founded the South Atlantic League and presided over it from 1959-2008. The winner of the award will be announced at the Baseball Winter Meetings this December.
