Community Love: 2013 Thus Far

An intangible concept, an experience really, that resounds with a firmness greater than Montage Mountain herself. It is better to give than to receive. Year one of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) and the new PNC Field afforded the new-look franchise and the good folks of NEPA to get to know each other once more through more than just baseball. And the giving? Well, it sure felt good.

Below is a quick checklist of the highlight totals in 2013:

  • Front office staff hours volunteered: 890.5
  • Player hours volunteered: 202.5
  • Mascot appearances: 130
  • Donations: $24,044 (tickets/merchandise/autographed memorabilia)
  • Hurl the Pearl donation (Boys & Girls Club): $12,092
  • Allied Health Services donation: $16,000

Total donation including monetary value of volunteered hours from team/staff, all monetary donations and in-kind donations: $217,737

“The sum totals sound good, but what sticks with me are the individual moments,” said RailRiders president/GM Rob Crain. “I got more goosebumps from seeing the impact of the efforts spearheaded by our staff and community relations manager Rachel Mark than I’ve had at any other point in my life. It was a very good year.”

The Community Organization of the Night program made its debut this season. Each of the team’s 72 home games spotlighted a local non-profit/civic organization. That CON had the opportunity to spread its message to every guest through a pre-game on-field interview, a ceremonial first pitch, an on-air radio interview and a concourse table display.

The RailRiders’ Military Appreciation Program was implemented this season to show the team’s support of our nation’s active and retired military. The service person and his/her family were honored. Activities included complimentary game tickets, a pre-game on-field interview and a ceremonial first pitch.

SWB’s patriotic pride continued with another new tip of the cap, Setting A Seat Aside. To honor men and women affiliated with our nation’s military whom could not be at PNC Field, one significant seat (section 13, row 15, seat one) will forever remain empty and unsold.

A standard from previous years got a big boost as the Adopt-A-Field Program upped the number of local fields renovated to four. Front office staff and grounds crew members combined to give the area little league/softball fields a big league facelift. Staffers spent the entire day at each park cutting the infield, rebuilding pitching mounds, fertilizing/mowing grass, cleaning dugouts and more. The fields were chosen through a contest on the team’s Facebook page with representatives of local leagues posting pictures of their field and describing its renovation needs. The four photos that received the most “likes” on Facebook were the lucky winners (Avoca/Dupont Little League; South Scranton Little League; Staback Park; Marvine Dutch Gap).

As the top affiliate of the New York Yankees, the RailRiders proudly played their part in the organization’s annual HOPE (Helping Others Persevere and Excel) Week effort. The week-long community outreach program’s purpose is to touch as many liveChildrens-Miracle-Network-logo125s as possible in your area. Members of the RailRiders’ coaching staff, players and front office folks made their way throughout NEPA.

The week included a Children’s Miracle Network Day at the Ballpark on July 7. Twin boys who have overcome the worst of health adversities spent time on the field with players during batting practice, Little-League-Challenger-lostopped by the pre-game clubhouse, threw out ceremonial first pitches and spent the game in the owner’s suite with friends and family. One day later, the RailRiders hosted a baseball game for the Lackawanna County Challenger Little League. LCCLL gives children with special needs the chance to participate in athletics. RailRiders coaches and players spent the entire game on the field, coaching and encouraging the boys and girls while helping them to bat, run and slide. A ballpark lunch followed. July 9 meant two surprise hospital visits to Moses Taylor and Geisinger in downtown Scranton. Patients interacted with the players while receiving giveaways, autographs and an overall fun time. The week concluded with players and front office staffers visiting thB&G-of-NEPA-logoe Boys & Girls Club of NEPA. The morning was spent playing baseball, billiards and computer games. The epic conclusion sported a dodgeball match between the RailRiders and the Boys & Girls club.

Voluntary-Action-Center-logoOn Aug. 21, a tag-team food drive by the RailRiders and the Voluntary Action Center of NEPA sought out to stock as many food pantries in NEPA as possible. Fans received free game tickets in exchange for non-perishable food items. In addition to the food from fans, the RailRiders also presented the Voluntary Action Center with a check for $1,300 to assist with the fight against hunger in NEPA.

Douglas Park FREE Baseball Clinic

The Elizabethton Twins will be conducting a free Youth Baseball Clinic on August 17, 10:30AM to 12:30PM at Douglas Park.

Douglas Park is located behind the Elizabethton City School System Administrative Offices at 804 South Watauga Avenue. Instruction in the fundamentals of baseball will take place along with lunch and an autograph session.

“We look forward to a great day at Douglas Park and hope to see many of our local youth at this event, said Mike Mains, Parks and Recreation Director.” “This is just another way our Minor League Baseball Franchise can give back to this community which is a win for our players, staff and fans alike.”

The camp will feature basic instruction in hitting, fielding and throwing. Participants will also have the opportunity to talk one on one with Elizabethton Twins players, will receive tickets to a future game and will have lunch with team members. Cardinals announce Youth Baseball Clinics at Hammons Field

Springfield, MO – The Springfield Cardinals, Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, are excited to announce the details for the upcoming Cardinals Youth Baseball Clinics at Hammons Field, presented by Balls-n-Strikes. The clinics will be held on Wednesday, August 7 and Saturday, August 10, both running from 9am – 12pm. Check in on both days will begin at 8am.

The Cardinals Youth Baseball Clinics are designed for kids, ages seven to 12, and will be limited to just 100 spots each to maximize the personal instruction from Springfield Cardinals players and coaches. The clinics will include batting practice in the Cardinals Indoor Facility, pitching lessons in the bullpen and fielding instruction on the award-winning Hammons Field. New this year will also be a Question and Answer Session for parents and coaches with Cardinals Manager Mike Shildt, who has guided his last three teams to their league championships, including Springfield in 2012.

The Cardinals kick off the four-game series against Northwest Arkansas with Christmas in July on Thursday at 7:09pm. New Dates For Summer Clinic Announced, Second Session Nearly Sold Out

SAN JOSE, CA – The San Jose Giants announced today new dates for their final summer clinic at Municipal Stadium. The two-day session, originally scheduled for August 17-18, will now take place August 10-11 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the home of the San Jose Giants. Participants will not only have the chance to play on the same field as future Major Leaguers, but also be coached by current San Jose Giants players. St. Lucie Mets Hosting Baseball Camp July 29-31

The St. Lucie Mets have announced they will be holding their second Summer Baseball Camp from Monday July 29 through Wednesday July 31 at Tradition Field.

The camp is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day for kids seven through 13. Campers will receive instruction from St. Lucie Mets players and coaches, lunch each day, certificates of completion, and a ticket to all St. Lucie Mets game for the duration of the camp. Campers will have the opportunity to take the field with Mets players prior to the game on July 31 against the Tampa Yankees at 6:30 p.m.

Rainiers, Union Bank Homer For Area Youth

Cheney Stadium to host Field Day for Boys & Girls Clubs

TACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Rainiers have proudly teamed up with Union Bank in an effort to provide deserving members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound the opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind day at the ballpark this season.

For every home run hit by a Rainiers player during a home game this season, Union Bank has pledged to donate scholarships to the Lakewood Boys & Girls Club and the Henry T. Schatz Boys & Girls Club of Tacoma to attend the Field Day at Cheney Stadium held on Wednesday, July 24.

The Field Day event marks the second consecutive season the Rainiers and Union Bank have joined forces to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the South Puget Sound, and it serves as the latest example of the organizations’ desire to support area youth. In 2012, Union Bank sponsored a night at the ballpark that allowed Boys & Girls Club members and their families to an exclusive night out at a Rainiers game.

“We are proud to partner with the Rainiers to offer this once-in-a-lifetime experience to the great kids of our local Boys & Girls Clubs,” said Maryetta Williams, SVP and Region Manager for Union Bank. “Union Bank is committed to giving back to our communities, and there is no better way to do that than providing a positive experience that brings a smile to a child.”

Each Field Day participant is offered the opportunity to interact with and receive instruction from Rainiers players while taking part in baseball-themed stations set up throughout the ballpark. An exclusive autograph session will be held following the event, and each of the boys and girls in attendance will receive a catered lunch at the stadium.

The following night, Thursday, July 25, each Field Day participant and their parents will be treated to a night at the ballpark courtesy of Union Bank when the Rainiers host a 7 p.m. contest against the Tucson Padres.

Due to a tremendous response from the community, the Muckdogs 2013 Youth Baseball Camp held on August 6th and 7th is completely filled up and registration is now closed. We will accept any mailed registration forms post-marked on July 30th. For those who did not sign up in time, please keep an eye out for the Muckdogs 2nd Annual Youth Baseball Camp in 2014.

Join us at Dwyer Stadium August 6th, 7th and 8th for our youth baseball camp!

Kids aged 6-14 will receive two days of on field instruction from the Muckdogs players and coaches on August 6th & 7th from 9am – 12pm, then on August 8th campers will be able to come back to Dwyer for a private autograph signing with the team 30 minutes before the gates open (5:30pm) and then be recognized on the field prior to the Muckdogs game vs. the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Rays affiliate).

Campers will also recieve a special t-shirt not available in the team store, a camp photo, two tickets to the August 8th game as well as daily lunch, all for ONLY $70!

LumberKings to Host Food Drive Night

Two perishable food items get fans free admission

Clinton, IA – The Clinton LumberKings are teaming with the community and area youth baseball/softball teams to help local food pantries. On Tuesday, June 25th, fans who bring in two perishable food items will receive a free general admission ticket to that night’s game against Wisconsin at 7:00.

Teams that choose to participate will turn in their donations at Ashford University Field on Tuesday, prior to the game. Each participating team member will get in free to that night’s game for their efforts. Participating teams will also be recognized on the field starting at 6:30 with the game starting at 7:00.

Moosic, Pa. – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) will hold a baseball equipment drive to benefit both soldiers in Afghanistan and local little leagues. The drive will take place on Saturday, June 22, when the RailRiders host the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles) in a split doubleheader. Equipment will be accepted at both games with the first contest starting at 12:05 p.m. and game two getting underway at 7:05 p.m.

“We wanted to bring a little piece of home to our troops overseas,” said RailRiders community relations manager Rachel Mark. “Giving them the ability to participate in America’s favorite pastime is the least we can do for the men and women who have given so much.”

Donation bins will be set up at the front gates at PNC Field and will be manned by volunteers from The American Legion Post 665 in Dickson City until the third inning of each game. This will allow fans to drop off their gently-used equipment as they enter the ballpark. The drive is designed to bring a piece of home to our soldiers, and also make a direct impact in the NEPA community.

Following the game, all of the equipment that was donated will be sorted by the volunteers. The adult equipment will be shipped to soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, while the youth equipment will be donated throughout the NEPA area. The RailRiders will be accepting all baseball equipment that is in usable condition.

Gates will open up at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 22. The first 2,500 fans in game one will receive a free bat courtesy of Kost Tire & Auto. The gates for game two will open at 6 p.m. and the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo will perform after the nightcap. With no upper deck at PNC Field anymore, every seat in the ballpark provides the supreme views and intimacy that make minor league baseball so special at incredibly affordable prices. Loons, MBF Team Up for Summer Baseball Camps

Hands-on baseball clinics focus on the skill development of campers, coached by Loons

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Baseball Foundation (MBF) will begin this season’s Loons Summer Baseball Camps at Dow Diamond on June 24. The two-day camps will pair participants with professional players and coaches from the Great Lakes Loons in a strong baseball-learning environment.

Campers will learn various aspects of hitting, throwing, fielding and pitching while being instructed in the characteristics that define successful baseball players. The drills taught will be the same ones utilized by the coaches and player personnel of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Great Lakes Loons.

Loons Summer Baseball Camp Dates:

June 24 & 25 (ages 7-12) • July 24 & 25 (ages 7-12)

Camp instruction will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Campers will also receive a camp t-shirt and two tickets to a Loons game that will take place following the second day of instruction. All campers will be invited on the field for special pre-game recognition.

Each two-day Loons Summer Baseball Camp is $90 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Michigan Baseball Foundation. A portion of the entry fee is tax deductible.

Naturals, Great Day Farms Partner on Free Baseball Clinic

Kids invited to signup for FREE clinic prior to June 30th game

Great Day Farms, along with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals players and coaches are teaming up for the sixth annual Youth Baseball Clinic at Arvest Ballpark, to be held from 2 until 4 P.M. on Sunday, June 30th prior to that night’s 6:00pm game against the Frisco RoughRiders.

The clinic is open to children ages 6-12 and will cover instruction of key baseball fundamentals, including hitting, fielding, pitching, and baserunning. All participants will be given a complimentary general admission ticket to that evening’s game against the RoughRiders, and the first 300 children to the clinic will also receive a free Great Day Farms t-shirt.

An autograph session with select Naturals players will follow the instruction portion of the clinic and will occur along the 1st base side of the concourse lasting approximately 15 minutes.

There is a sign-up form located on the Naturals website, nwanaturals.com, under the community menu that interested parents can print, fill out, and then fax or mail in to register their children for the clinic. The youth baseball clinic is also open to local youth coaches as they may also fill out the form and fax in their roster to register their entire teams. The deadline to register for the event is Friday, June 28th, but participants are encouraged to sign up quickly, as previous seasons events filled to capacity prior to the deadline. Sign-up begins at the ballpark at 1:30pm so we ask that you arrive early as participation is limited to the first 500 children. Green Country Chevy Dealers to Provide Free Youth Baseball Clinic

The Green Country Chevy Dealers will provide a free youth baseball clinic with the Drillers players on June 21 and 22 at ONEOK Field.

On June 21-22, the Green Country Chevy Dealers will host a free instructional clinic at ONEOK Field for youth baseball players in the Tulsa area. Coached by the Tulsa Drillers, participants will learn the essentials of throwing, fielding and hitting.

The clinic is one of over 200 that Chevrolet is hosting nationwide this year as part of the Chevrolet Youth Baseball Program. Chevrolet has sponsored free, public baseball clinics for children across the country since 2006.

Here is the event schedule for the Tulsa Clinic:
