JERSEY SHORE, NJ – BlueClaws baseball is for everyone! That continues to be the team’s message as the BlueClaws prepare for their third Pride Night, to be held on Friday, June 3rd. Pride Night at ShoreTown Ballpark is presented by Coca-Cola.

The BlueClaws held their first Pride Night, presented by Coca-Cola, in 2019 in front of a capacity, sold-out crowd, and despite pandemic-restrictions, held another successful event in 2021.

“We consider ourselves to be a very open and inclusive organization and proud member of the community,” said BlueClaws Team President Joe Ricciutti. “We want to show the LGBT community that they are, and always will be, welcome at BlueClaws games!”

“It seems so simple–players should be judged on their athletic ability–not by who they love or how they identify. MGM Park To Host Gulf Coast Diamond Classic on May 21

The Biloxi Shuckers and BCSG 360 announced today they will host the Gulf Coast Diamond Classic on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at MGM Park. The Gulf Coast Diamond Classic will feature HBCUs Jackson State University (Jackson, MS) and Mississippi Valley State University (Itta Bena, MS).

The contest will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The gates at MGM Park will open one hour prior to game start time.

Fans have three ticket options for the Gulf Coast Diamond Classic:

  • Adult Ticket – $20 includes entry for game.
  • Youth Ticket – $10 includes entry for game.
  • Premium Ticket – $30 includes entry for game and premium seating access.

When purchasing tickets, unless buying premium tickets, select ‘BERM’ for your ticket option. For the Gulf Coast Diamond Classic, these will allow you to sit anywhere in the seating bowl that is not in the premium section.

Ben Hemmelgarn, 16-year-old cancer survivor, will celebrate his Anthem Home Run for Life at a Dragons Game

Dayton, Ohio—Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio and the Dayton Dragons will host 16-year-old Ben Hemmelgarn during the iconic Anthem Home Run for Life program on Wednesday, May 18, at 7:05 p.m., when the Dayton Dragons take on the Quad Cities River Bandits at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

The Anthem Home Run for Life program provides children in the Dayton region who are battling serious medical conditions with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Each honoree gets to take a lap around the bases at Day Air Ballpark during a Dragons home game while the crowd cheers them on.

Ben will also have the chance to throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the Dragons game. A couple of Dayton Dragons and Cincinnati Reds players have special messages that will be shown in game after the Home Run for Life lap.

Ben’s Story

In December of 2018, Ben Hemmelgarn was a 7th grader experiencing extreme chest pain. Doctors prescribed him with an­tibiotics for what seemed like pneumonia. Several weeks later, he was still having a sharpness in his side, and a CT scan highlighted a lump on the right side of his chest.

A biopsy confirmed Ben had Ewing Sarcoma, a type of bone or soft tissue cancer that occurs in young children. Ben underwent six rounds of chemotherapy where he experienced a loss of taste and smell, hair loss, mouth sores, and numbness in his hands and feet.

After months of chemotherapy, an MRI scan showed that the tu­mor did shrink, but surgery was required to remove the remaining mass. The operation was successful however left Ben weak – it required doctors to also remove his fourth rib.

Through September of 2019, his chemo treatments continued to ensure the cancer would not return. The ‘End of Treatment’ scans in October of 2019 confirmed that Ben was cancer free!

Today, Ben is a sophomore at Coldwater High School. Ben plays second base for the Cavaliers Baseball team, and recently earned his driver’s license. After reflecting on his journey, he believes his perseverance was the driving force in his battle with cancer. He says “You can’t beat the person who never gives up…and I always try to be that person”

Culture Works Weekend Coming to Day Air Ballpark

Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Dragons are excited to host a Culture Works Weekend at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District. Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22 will be dedicated to helping support the annual Culture Works campaign.

Dragons mascots Heater and Gem are co-chairs of the annual Culture Works campaign. Earlier in March, the Dragons hosted the Kickoff Culture Works Party at Day Air Ballpark. The event featured Heater, Gem, live artists, musicians, and a photo booth. Guests were made up of arts organization leaders, board members, donors, and staff.

The weekend will include Culture Works performers singing the national anthem during the events. There will also be Culture Works first pitches, inning break performances, plaza performances, radio interviews and TV interviews.

High School Baseball Playoffs Return to Whataburger Field

CORPUS CHRISTI – Whataburger Field will play host to three high school baseball regional quarterfinal matchups this week with a potential for a fourth game, if necessary, starting on Thursday, May 19.

Thursday’s games feature Santa Gertrudis Academy vs London at 4:30 PM, with London in the third base dugout. Gates open at 3:30 PM. Following that game, the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks will square off against Veterans Memorial Eagles with first pitch scheduled for 8:00 PM. The Eagles will occupy the third base dugout. Fans who purchase tickets will reserve their seat for that specific game only.

The Needville Blue Jays take on the Sinton Pirates Saturday, May 21. First pitch is at 4:00 PM with gates opening at 3:00 PM. Sinton will utilize the third base dugout. If necessary, game three will immediately follow.

Columbus Litter League Is Back to Strike Out Litter in City Neighborhoods

Opening Day for season two of Columbus Litter League is June 1, and volunteers can join the lineup to help strike out litter in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Individuals, community groups, nonprofit organizations and businesses can form teams of up to 20 players for division competition in the baseball-themed litter abatement effort managed by the City of Columbus Keep Columbus Beautiful program.

Litter League season runs from June 1 through August 31, and teams will score one run for each full bag of litter collected during cleanups.

Mayor Andrew J. Ginther has a friendly wager with Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz on which city’s Litter League program will collect more tons of debris this season.

“Litter is a serious quality of life issue affecting the safety and health of residents and the environment,” said Mayor Ginther. “With teamwork, our community can solve this harmful problem. Thank you to all Litter League players and supporters working to defeat litter in our community. We will score a victory against litter in Columbus, and a win versus Toledo Litter League, too!”

Huntington is the presenting sponsor of Columbus Litter League and is working with the Columbus Clippers, also a sponsor, to support the competition and hold special Litter League team nights at Clippers’ games this summer.

Members of the United States Armed Forces were held as prisoners of war (POWs) in significant numbers during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1973. The POWs spent years living in unimaginable circumstances. They had a mission to resist, survive and return with honor, and they did.

Fluor Field will be alive with large groups of POWs in Greenville for a reunion and celebration of their survival. Let’s show up and celebrate with them!

Spokane Indians and Avista Utilities Team Up to Host Fairchild Families

Spokane, WASH. – Each quarter, Fairchild Air Force Base hosts family members of deployed personnel on base, providing a welcome distraction and the chance to spend time with families facing similar challenges. At these events, the goal is to provide a free meal and entertainment while enjoying each other’s company and support.

This spring, in light of recent world events, the Spokane Indians and Avista Utilities teamed up to host this event with over 100 family members of deployed personnel from Fairchild at the ballpark on Friday, April 22nd.

The group enjoyed a ballpark-catered dinner in the Coors Light Caboose and cheered on the Indians to a 7-3 victory over the Hillsboro Hops on a gorgeous spring night at Avista Stadium.

Lindsey Diaz, whose grandfather played in the New York Mets organization, threw out the first pitch before the game. Her husband, Lt. Col. Valentino “Tino” Diaz, has been in the Air Force since 2005 and is currently stationed in the European Theater.

“It means everything to have someone who is going through the same things you are going through,” said Lindsey. “And an event like this to bring it all together – it’s super fun.”

Marissa Korzilius’ husband Lt. Col. Joshua Korzilius, who was in the same class at the Air Force Academy as Lt. Col. Diaz, has been in the European Theater since October. The mother of four is thankful to have the support of the Spokane community and fellow military spouses like Lindsey.

“Things like this help, seeing the community rally around you,” said Marissa. “The kids are able to do something fun and get their mind off missing dad.”

The night at the ballpark for the deployed families started with a light rain but ended with an Indians win, a beautiful sunset, and a rainbow over the Caboose, showing that — with a little help from the community and support from friends and family – there are brighter days ahead.

The Greenville Drive Celebrates 10-Year Partnership with The Blood Connection

The Greenville Drive takes great pride in being the front porch for the community of Greenville, which means they strive to aid their community. For 10 years the Drive has partnered with The Blood Connection to be a positive light in Greenville. The Drive announced a goal to secure 356 pints of usable blood over the course of the season through a series of six blood drives running from mid-April through mid-August at Fluor Field. The number 356 is special to The Drive, as it commemorates Shoeless Joe Jackson’s lifetime batting average and the name of the new District 356 entertainment area adjacent to Fluor Field.

The first two of these events took place on April 11 and April 20, with four additional tenth anniversary blood drives at Fluor Field set for:

  • Friday, May 20 from noon-5 p.m. (gameday)
  • Tuesday, June 7 from noon-5 p.m. (gameday)
  • Thursday, July 21 noon-5 p.m.
  • Friday, August 12 from noon-5 p.m. (gameday)

To encourage and recognize the importance of blood donors in helping friends and neighbors at their time of greatest need, the Ten Years of Saving Lives Campaign will include special rewards and incentives for those who donate at these events. The Blood Connection and the Greenville Drive will recognize the dedicated donors across the season at an end of the year event. Donate at two of the Fluor Field blood drives to be invited; donate at 3 throughout the summer and receive a commemorative Drive baseball jersey.

In partnership with Greenville County Schools and Furman University, the Drive will be hosting their annual Drive for Excellence celebration on Tuesday, May 17th. This evening is all about recognizing high-achieving student-athletes in Greenville County, as each student-athlete with a 4.0 GPA or higher will receive complimentary admission to the game plus in-game recognition and celebration for their hard work and many accomplishments.

A pregame reception for student-athletes and coaches in the 500 Club will begin at 5:30 PM. As part of the reception, special guest Jackie Carson, the current head coach of the Furman Women’s Basketball Team, will deliver a keynote address congratulating these students for their accomplishments and encouraging future success in all of them.

During the game, on-field recognitions will honor the top performing school in each sport, as well as the school with the highest overall GPA among its student-athletes.

The Wichita Wind Surge announced a $5,000 donation from the Schwechheimer Family Foundation to the United Way of the Plains as the beginning of the team’s season-long efforts to support Andover Tornado Relief.

The Schwechheimer Family Foundation is a 501c3 entity established by the Wind Surge to operate the Wichita Baseball Museum and to support non-profits and underserved youth throughout the Wichita community. “No one is more in need than those members of our community who have been adversely impacted by the recent tornado,” said Foundation President Jane Schwechheimer.

The $5,000 donation is the first of several programs the Wind Surge plan to execute throughout the 2022 season. “We know it will be a long road to recovery for the many families and community members who have been affected by this devasting disaster,” said Schwechheimer. “We want them to know the team supports them, not just in the moment but long term.”

In the coming weeks, the Wind Surge will donate proceeds from jersey auctions held in conjunction with the Major League Baseball/Minor League Baseball memorabilia auction site, in addition to coordinating a school-supply drive with donations earmarked for Prairie Creek Elementary School, a Wind Surge Reading Program School, and the Andover YMCA. A back- to-school night is also being planned for this fall.

TinCaps Jersey Auction to Help Fund Daisies Monument

Fort Wayne TinCaps and City of Fort Wayne partner on Fort Wayne Daisies Player Monument

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Fort Wayne TinCaps, in partnership with the City of Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department, are raising funds to renovate and improve the Fort Wayne Daisies monument at the historic site of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) team’s home field, located at Fort Wayne’s Memorial Park.

“Fort Wayne has a rich baseball history and the Daisies are front and center as trailblazers for the sport in this city,” said Michael Limmer, TinCaps Vice President of Marketing. “While Memorial Park has long had a marker to designate it as the former home field of the Fort Wayne Daisies, we felt each individual Daisies player deserved to be recognized as well. This new monument will highlight each of the 144 former players and managers associated with the Daisies during the team’s existence from 1945 through 1954.”

The enhanced monument was designed and created as a partnership with the City of Fort Wayne’s Parks and Recreation Department. Memorial Park is located approximately two miles east of Parkview Field, where the TinCaps play.

“It is fitting to honor each player and the managers of the Fort Wayne Daisies on one of the very sites where they played,” said Steve McDaniel, Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Director. “These women represented Fort Wayne, our parks and recreational sports with distinction coming out of the World War II conflict and set a tone of excellence and team spirit that we still celebrate today. Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation is glad to partner with the Fort Wayne TinCaps in this effort to memorialize the names of the Fort Wayne Daisies players with a monument in Memorial Park.”

The TinCaps are hoping that fans of the Daisies will help make the monument possible.

“The Parks & Recreation Department has been incredible to work with on this project,” said Limmer. “From the moment we proposed the idea they have been onboard 100 percent. They created the plans, the layout, the design for the monument, and are covering the cost of preparing the future site and all surrounding landscaping. Now, we just need to fundraise the remaining portion of the project to make this monument happen.”

The TinCaps, Minor League Baseball’s High-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, will wear replica Daisies uniforms during their game on Saturday, May 21. The jerseys are being auctioned online with 100 percent of all winning bids going directly toward the monument project.

“The TinCaps are covering the cost of producing the jerseys so all proceeds from the auction will go directly to making this monument a reality,” Limmer said. “Every penny that these jerseys raise is one step closer to making this monument happen. The Fort Wayne Daisies players, and their families, deserve to have their names permanently on display for future generations. We don’t want their legacy to be forgotten.”

The Fort Wayne TinCaps are partnering with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) to host a Fort Wayne Daisies Throwback Night on Saturday, May 21 (6:35 p.m.) as the TinCaps — wearing special Daisies-themed jerseys — take on the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate).

During the evening, fans can expect to see former players from the Daisies and other AAGPBL teams in attendance. The AAGPBL alumni, and their families, will be recognized on the field during the night and also signing autographs for fans on the concourse. The TinCaps will be honoring and recognizing them for their community contributions and the legacy they built in the game of baseball. In addition, this night will also feature postgame fireworks.

Scrappers Partner With The DeBartolo Corporation To Present The Community Dugout Program For The 2022 Season

NILES, OH – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers present the Community Dugout Program for the 2022 Scrapers season. The program is designed to provide complimentary tickets to a Scrappers game to non-profit organizations in the Mahoning Valley. Non-profit organizations can apply for the program and use the tickets for those who benefit from their organizations or as rewards for their volunteers.

The ticket request form can be found at mvscrappers.com and must be submitted to the Scrappers at least two weeks prior to the requested game date. In addition to the ticket request form, a letter needs to be submitted with your organization’s letterhead.

Complimentary tickets will be available for Mahoning Valley Scrappers home games pending availability with a maximum of 20 tickets available per group. If your request is approved, a Scrappers Front Office Staff Member will be in contact to confirm.

Tickets will be held at the Chick-Fil-A Howland Will Call Window located at the Chevy All Stars Box Office at Eastwood Field for pick up on arrival at the game. The tickets can only be released to the authorized group leader, who must present identification and a copy of the request form in order to receive the tickets.
