West Sacramento, Calif. — The Sacramento River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, will be hosting their annual job fair on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, looking to hire over 300 employees. The event will take place from 10 a.m. through 1 p.m. (PT) rain or shine.

Those wanting to work for the River Cats and at Sutter Health Park for the 2022 season should attend this free event where hiring managers will conduct interviews. Interested persons must submit an online application by visiting rivercats.com/employment prior to attending the job fair. Job offers for select positions may be extended on the spot.

All applicants must be at least 16 years of age (with a valid work permit) and at least 21 years old if the position serves alcohol. A condition of employment requires employees to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Jobs available are part-time seasonal positions in concessions, culinary, warehouse, security, EMT, parking, suite attendants, bartenders, catering servers, and game day entertainment (Cat Crew).

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – The Naturals and Patina Restaurant Group will be hosting a Job Fair at Arvest Ballpark in the Northwest Health Community Room on Thursday, February 10th beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals and Patina Restaurant Group, the official caterer of Arvest Ballpark, will be taking applications and conducting on-site interviews for part-time, Gameday associates who, if selected, will be instrumental during the upcoming 2022 season. Kids Zone Attendant

Kids Zone Attendants are responsible for ensuring all children play safely while having fun. This area includes four (4) inflatables, kid’s train, a mini-golf course, speed pitch, and our wiffle ball field.

Parking Attendants

Naturals Parking Attendants are the front-line employees of our Gameday Associate Customer Service Team. Parking attendants are asked to process cash transactions and make change as needed.

Mascot

Engaging, enthusiastic individual that will act out the character of the Naturals mascots “Strike” and “Sinker”. Perform at all (or majority of) home games at Arvest Ballpark and some community appearances, as requested. Must be able to be active for up to 2 hours in costume and have a willingness to show your personality through the characters. Training and a script for each game is provided, and a handler is also assigned to help with crowd control and getting mascots into position.

Usher

Ushers must be willing to interact with fans and check for correct seat locations on tickets.

Ticket Seller

Responsible for selling tickets and assisting fans at the window. Money handling and customer service experience a plus, but not required. Does require basic familiarity with computer and ability to use our ticket system, ProVenue. This position is normally finished by the second inning of the game

Ticket Scanner

Ticket Scanners should welcome the fans with enthusiasm. All scanners will be trained in the use of the hand-held scanner and Naturals Policies. Applicant must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Bag Checker

Bag Checkers are essential to Arvest Ballpark security. Associates will search and identify objects, food, and/or drink that are not allowed. Working hand-in-hand with the ticket scanners, bag checkers will help organize the entry lines and answer any fan questions. Checkers will also manage in-game re-entry by checking fans in and out of the ballpark. Applicants must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Retail Associate

Requires organizational skills, ability to complete sales, and maintain inventory accurately. The ability to multi-task is also important as the retail store may be very busy at times throughout each game. Money handling and customer service experience a plus, but not required.

Camera Operator

Camera operators are responsible for setting up, operating, and breaking down game day cameras. The cameras used are JVC GY HM-800s. Training will be provided for setup, breakdown, and operation.

Grounds Crew

Grounds crew is needed for home games, high school games, and other special events. Duties involve batting practice tear down, cleaning equipment, 5th inning drag, and post-game patching. Applicant must be able to lift a minimum 50 pounds, be willing and able to work in various weather conditions.

TinCaps Holding Mascot Tryouts

 

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Fort Wayne TinCaps (Minor League Baseball’s High-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres) are holding tryouts to be the team’s mascot for the upcoming 2022 season.

Auditions will be held at the team’s ballpark, Parkview Field, on Saturday, February 5 and Saturday, February 19 from 12 – 2 p.m. on both days.

The team is looking for friendly and energetic individuals to serve as Johnny TinCap, one of the most recognizable characters in not only the Fort Wayne area, but across all of Minor League Baseball. Previous experience as a mascot or entertainer is preferred, but not required.

This is a paid, seasonal, part-time position. Tryouts must be scheduled in advance by clicking here. TinCaps Community and Fan Engagement Manager Brenda Feasby will be in contact with those who submit the form to confirm the tryout date/time and other details.

The season begins on Tuesday, April 12th and will run through Sunday, September 18th with a chance of additional playoff games and events.

The concessions fundraising program has been successful for many non-profit organizations including school sports and clubs, high school project graduations, little leagues, religious groups, and more.

Hillsboro Hops Announce 2022 Virtual Hops Fund Banquet

 

HILLSBORO, OR (January 20, 2022) – The Hillsboro Hops (@HillsboroHops) are pleased to announce their annual Hillsboro Hops Fund Banquet will be going virtual in 2022. A live stream of the event will take place from 6:30-8 PM on Wednesday, February 2nd. There is no cost to view.

The goal of the Hillsboro Hops Fund is to develop and establish a community benefits program, the purpose of which is to promote, foster and support education, health, culture and youth activities, including activities for underprivileged youth, in the Greater Hillsboro area.

The Hillsboro Hops Fund Banquet is a signature fundraising event for the Hillsboro Hops Fund. This year’s edition will feature an online silent auction, highlights from the Hops community efforts over the past year and feature conversations with current and former Hops players and staff.

This year’s special guests include 2021 Hops Manager, Vince Harrison, drafted in 2001 by the Rays, Harrison played in the Minor League System until signing on as a coach in 2013 with the Diamondbacks. Joining him is Ronnie Gajownik, Gajownik played college softball at the University of South Florida before making the United States Women’s National Baseball team, where she won Gold at the 2015 Pan-Am Games. She served as the Hops Video Coordinator in 2021 and has accepted a coaching position within the Diamondbacks organization for 2022.

Rounding out the panel, is Tristin English, who played collegiately at Georgia Tech before being drafted by the Diamondbacks in the third round in 2019. English was a position player for the Hops in 2019 and 2021.

RiverDogs Partner with CCSD for Sixth Year of “Reading Around the Bases”

 

The Charleston RiverDogs and the Charleston County School District have announced plans to commence the sixth year of their literacy initiative, “Reading Around the Bases.” The program began during the 2016-2017 school year to promote having fun while reading with second graders throughout the county.

Starting on Tuesday, January 25, second graders from over 20 elementary schools in CCSD will begin a 10-week baseball-themed incentive program. Every student will receive a Reading Challenge packet that includes a scorecard and tracking sheet. To move around the bases on the scorecard, a student must read a certain number of pages: 100 pages for a single, 200 pages for a double, 300 pages for a triple, and 500 pages for a home run.

This year’s kickoff event for “Reading Around the Bases” will be at Murray-LaSaine Montessori School on James Island on January 25 at 9:00 a.m. RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols, other members of the front office staff and Charlie T. RiverDog will participate in the event. Media outlets are welcome to attend.

“The RiverDogs are proud to continue the outstanding relationship with the Charleston County School District that has existed since I have been a part of the organization,” added RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. “Literacy and education are vital for the development of young members of the Charleston community, and we are excited to continue impacting students in the sixth year of this tremendous program.”

Special guests from the RiverDogs will visit schools in CCSD over the course of the next few months to provide encouragement and engage the students as volunteer readers.

“We continue to be impressed with and grateful for the effort the RiverDogs put into in this initiative, and for their continued support of our district,” said CCSD’s Chief Academic Officer, Karolyn Belcher. “Credit goes to Christy James and our teacher-librarians as well. The top-25 second graders from each participating school will be honored at a select RiverDogs game during the upcoming season.

Cardinals to host job fair January 27 at Hammons Field

 

The Springfield Cardinals will host a job fair on Thursday, Jan. 27 to fill seasonal part-time gameday positions for the 2022 season. The fair will take place from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and from 5-7:00 p.m. in the Hammons Field Indoor Training Facility.

To help protect attendees and staff, face coverings worn properly over the nose and mouth will be required for everyone at the job fair. Interviews will not be conducted with anyone failing to wear a face covering. Social distancing measures will also be in effect.

Interviews will be held during the event for seasonal gameday part-time positions available in customer service/game entertainment, sales, ticket operations, press box operations, event staff and field crew. Thanksgiving for Thousands

The Delmarva Shorebirds kicked off the holiday season by participating in Mountaire Farms annual Thanksgiving for Thousands. The Shorebirds have been involved with Mountaire Farms Thanksgiving for Thousands for many years now and helped Mountaire pack over 10,000 Thanksgiving boxes for families in need across Delmarva. This event is a favorite of the Shorebirds front office and was a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

An annual tradition, the Delmarva Shorebirds’ front office staff partnered with the Shorebirds’ Fan Club to participate in Salvation Army’s Bell Ringing in front of the Salisbury Walmart this holiday season. By participating in bell ringing, the Shorebirds were able to help the Salvation Army raise holiday funds for families in need in our community, while sharing a smile and holiday cheer with customers and Shorebirds fans.

Santa’s Letters

Next, Sherman and the Shorebirds visited Santa’s Letters in Dagsboro, Delaware to help ring in the Christmas season. This event spread Christmas cheer by allowing kids to play in the winter wonderland, drink hot chocolate, and put their letter to Santa in Santa’s mailbox. Sherman was very excited for Santa to read his letter! Sherman and the Shorebirds enjoyed helping Santa’s Letters spread the joy of the holiday season for those young and old. Despite the cold, Sherman’s feathers kept him warm!

Home Instead’s “Be a Santa to a Senior” Program

At the beginning of December, the Delmarva Shorebirds partnered with Home Instead for their “Be a Santa to a Senior” program. The Shorebirds decorated a Christmas tree in their front lobby and put ornaments from Home Instead that were labeled with gifts that seniors could use this holiday season. With the help of our amazing fans, the Shorebirds were able to give many presents to the seniors in our community through the “Be a Santa to a Senior” Program. Plus, Sherman visited the MAC Center with Home Instead to spread holiday cheer to the seniors as they received their gifts. This wonderful community initiative is something the Delmarva Shorebirds welcomed for the first time this season and plan to join forces with Home Instead for the years to come.

Holiday Parades

Sherman was a very busy bird this holiday season as he attended seven (7) Christmas parades across Delmarva. On November 29th, the Shorebirds started their parade route by attending the Pocomoke Christmas Parade followed by the Berlin Christmas Parade a few days after on December 2nd. Sherman and the Shorebirds had a double header on December 4th as Sherman shook his tailfeather at both Ocean City and Seaford Christmas parades. Sherman flew closer to the nest on December 5th as he spread holiday cheer at the Salisbury Christmas Parade giving his hometown fans a reminder that baseball will soon be back at Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds ended the parade route with the Rehoboth Christmas Parade on December 6th and the Bridgeville Christmas parade on December 12th.

Halo Trees of Hope Festival

The Shorebirds donated a Shorebirds themed Christmas tree decked out with various memorabilia including Shorebirds bobbleheads, upper reserved tickets to a Shorebirds game, and a Shorebirds Suite Night, all valuing at $1000 to Halo’s first Trees of Hope Festival. The Shorebirds’ Christmas tree along with many other trees donated by organizations across Delmarva were auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting Halo Ministry and their mission of helping those experiencing homelessness in the area.

Jaycees Christmas Shopping Tour

Sherman and the Shorebirds helped the Jaycees with their annual Christmas Shopping Tour where they spread the Christmas cheer and gave out Christmas gifts to children in the area at the Salisbury Elks Lodge #817. The Jaycees do amazing work in the community each year, and the Shorebirds are always excited for the opportunity to join forces with such a wonderful organization.

Penguin Swim

Sherman attended Atlantic General Hospital’s annual Penguin Swim in Ocean City on New Year’s Day! He cheered on attendees as they dipped their tail feathers in the ocean. Sherman was a warm, friendly face for the participants who dunked themselves in the frigid waters. The proceeds of the event benefited the hospital and their mission of providing quality care to their community, and Sherman and the Shorebirds were proud to support such an incredible event.

The Delmarva Shorebirds were able to join forces with incredible community members this holiday season to give back to our supportive community and spread holiday cheer. The Shorebirds participated in recurring events that are beloved by the team as well as new ones that the Shorebirds hope to continue year after year. With the 2022 Delmarva Shorebirds’ season quickly approaching, the team will continue to fulfill its mission of making a positive impact on the community as well as gearing up for an exciting 2022 season of Shorebirds baseball that is bound to be one of the best years yet!

Fireflies Seasonal Job Fair Postponed to January 29

 

COLUMBIA, SC –The Columbia Fireflies have postponed their seasonal Job Fair, originally schedule for this upcoming Saturday, to next Saturday, January 29 from 10 am to 2 pm at Segra Park. The reason for the postponement is to ensure the safety of all Fireflies staff members and job fair attendees due to the incoming inclement weather forecasted to hit the Midlands this weekend. The Fireflies are looking to fill approximately 300 seasonal and part-time positions at the Job Fair for the upcoming baseball season which kicks off at Segra Park on April 8.

“The safety of our staff, and those attending the job fair, is our top priority which is why we have decided to postpone the event,” said Team President Brad Shank. “Our game day team is such an important part of providing our fans with a fantastic experience at Segra Park and we cannot wait to meet all potential new Fireflies team members at the Job Fair January 29.”

Blue Wahoos Job Fair: Tuesday, January 25 – 4:00-7:00 PM

 

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos and Studer Family of Companies will host their annual Job Fair on Tuesday, January 25 to hire seasonal staff for the 2022 Blue Wahoos baseball season as well as positions within the Studer Family of Companies. The event will take place from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

Interviews will be held on-site and candidates are encourage to bring a resume and come prepared to discuss their experience and qualifications.­­

Positions available within the Studer Family of Companies include:

Blue Wahoos: Internship & Trainee positions available in Box Office and Ticket Sales, Community Relations, Corporate Sales, Media Relations, Graphic Design, Merchandise, and Stadium Operations. Food and Beverage staff including cooks, prep staff, and cashiers. Creative Services staff including in-game entertainment team, camera operators, and control room positions. Operations staff including ushers, cleaning crew, and grounds crew.

Top 5 Black Players in Spokane Indians History

 

In celebration of Black History Month, throughout February, teams across Minor League Baseball are taking a look back at five of the best Black players to suit up for their club.

While some of these standout performers went on to long and illustrious Major League careers, others simply had great Minor League careers or, in some cases, just one incredible season that went down as “a year for the ages.”

Here is a look at five of the best Black baseball players ever to suit up for the Spokane Indians.

Tommy Davis

A native of Brooklyn, NY, Tommy Davis moved west with the Dodgers organization and reached Spokane in 1959. The sweet-swinging outfielder was an absolute wrecking ball for the Indians that year, finishing the season with a league-leading .345 average, 211 hits, 32 doubles, 18 home runs, 78 RBIs, 21 stolen bases, and more walks (40) than strikeouts (29). He had a cup of coffee with the Dodgers that season, striking out in his lone at-bat before joining the team full time in 1960. Davis captured back-to-back National League batting titles in 1962 (.346, league-leading 153 RBI) and 1963 (.326), helping the team to a World Series title in 1963. Injuries prevented Davis from continuing his Hall-of-Fame trajectory, but the Indians alum still finished his career with a pair of All-Star appearances, two batting titles, and more than 2,100 hits over 18 big league seasons.

Willie Davis

After signing as an 18-year-old out of Mineral Springs, AR, Davis quickly proved the minors were no match for his prowess at the plate and speed on the basepaths. He captured the California League MVP with the Reno Silver Sox in 1959 and earned a promotion to Spokane the following year. Davis showed his first season was no fluke, hitting .346 with 26 triples and 30 stolen bases for the Indians as he again captured the league MVP award. Still just 20, Davis earned a late-season call-up with the Dodgers and hit .318 in 22 games. He took over as the full-time centerfielder in 1961 and would remain a fixture there through the 1973 season, winning World Series titles in 1963 and 1965. Davis wrapped up his 18-year career with 398 stolen bases, 182 home runs, 1,053 RBIs, and over 2,500 hits, and still holds the Los Angeles Dodgers record for longest hit streak at 31 games.

Dave Henderson

A first-round pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 1977 draft, Henderson reached Spokane in 1980 and held his own as a 21-year-old, slashing .279/.366/.422 with seven home runs and 50 RBIs in 109 games. He returned to Spokane in 1981 and improved his power and plate discipline (.279/.385/.504) to earn a promotion to Seattle. Hendu was a solid performer for the Mariners over the next 4.5 seasons before being traded to Boston in 1986, where his performance in that year’s World Series (.400, 6 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI) nearly led the Red Sox to their first championship since 1918. Henderson split the following season with Boston and San Francisco before breaking out with Oakland (.304, 24 HR, 94 RBIs) as a 30-year-old in 1988. He would remain in the Bay Area through 1993, helping the A’s to a World Series title in 1989 and earning an All-Star appearance in 1991. Hendu retired following the 1994 season with 197 home runs, 1,324 hits, and a career WAR of 27.6.

Don Newcombe

Newcombe spent two years with the Negro League’s Newark Eagles before embarking on an historic MLB career with the Dodgers, Reds, and Indians. The towering right-hander was named Rookie of the Year for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 after finishing 17-8 with a 3.17 ERA and league-leading five shutouts, also becoming the first black pitcher to start a World Series game that same year. He earned All-Star nods the next two seasons (leading the league in strikeouts in 1951) before serving in the Korean War from 1952-53. He struggled in his return to Brooklyn the following season but rebounded with 20 wins and a World Series title in 1955. Newcombe had a season for the ages in 1956, posting a 0.989 WHIP and winning 27 games to earn league MVP and baseball’s first-ever Cy Young Award (which was awarded to only one pitcher in all of baseball at the time). “Newk” spent two more seasons with the Dodgers before finishing out his big league career with the Reds (1958-60) and Indians (1960). He signed with the Dodgers and attempted an MLB comeback with the Spokane Indians in 1961 (where he was teammates with fellow Negro League alum Curt Roberts) but struggled to a 4.96 ERA over 25 games. Newcombe, always a good hitter for a pitcher, wrapped up his playing career as a first baseman/outfielder alongside Larry Doby for Japan’s Chunichi Dragons in 1962.

Maury Wills

The speedy infielder from Washington, DC, spent seven seasons in the minors before reaching Spokane in 1958, where Indians manager Bobby Bragan convinced a struggling Wills to pick up switch-hitting. That decision changed the course of Wills’ career, as he would go on to become one of the most decorated MLB players in Spokane history. Wills hit .253 with 21 stolen bases in first season in Spokane before improving to .313 in 1959 to earn a late-season promotion to the Dodgers. He became a full-time player in 1960 and led the National League in stolen bases for the next six years, highlighted by an MLB record 104 in 1962 as he captured the NL MVP award. Wills won World Series titles with Los Angeles in 1959, 1963, and 1965 while also earning five All-Star appearances and a pair of Gold Glove awards. He retired following the 1972 season with a .281 career average, 2,134 hits, and 586 stolen bases. Wills would later become just the third Black manager in MLB history, following Frank Robinson and Larry Doby, when he helmed the Mariners in 1980-81. His son, Bump Wills, graduated from Spokane’s Central Valley High School and spent six years in the big leagues with the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs.

Honorable Mention

Curtis Terry: “Big Rig” spent time with Spokane in 2016-17 before a breakout season in 2018 (.337, 15 HR, 60 RBIs) earned him the Northwest League MVP award. Terry reached the majors with the Texas Rangers in 2021 and signed with the Minnesota Twins in the off-season.

Jay Gainer: A 24th-round pick by the San Diego Padres, Gainer captured the league batting title in 1990 (.356, 10 HR, 54 RBIs) and helped lead the Indians to their fourth consecutive NWL championship. He reached the majors with Colorado in 1993 and homered on the first pitch he saw in the big leagues. Gainer later managed the Yakima Bears and currently serves as head coach at Davis HS in Yakima.

Dee Brown: The 14th-overall pick in the 1996 draft by the Kansas City Royals, Brown captured the NWL MVP award as a 19-year-old in 1997 after slashing .326/.404/.564 with 13 HR, 73 RBI, and 17 SB. He spent part of eight seasons in the majors and played for more years in Japan before embarking on a career as a coach.

Ken Harvey: A first-team All-American with Nebraska in 1999, Harvey was drafted in the 5th round of that year’s draft by the Royals and won the NWL batting title with Spokane that season with an eye-popping .397 average. Harvey spent just four years in the majors, but earned an All-Star appearance in 2004, and currently works as a coach in Kansas.

Carl Edwards Jr.: A lowly 48th-round pick out of Prosperity, SC, the “String Bean Slinger” was absolutely electric for the Spokane Indians in 2012, striking out 60 over 47 innings with a 2.11 ERA and 0.957 WHIP. Edwards went on to win a World Series title with the Chicago Cubs in 2016 and has posted a career 3.77 ERA in 206 big league appearances.
