The National Negro League was founded in 1920 by Rube Foster and showcased the talents of Jackie Robinson, Satchell Paige, Josh Gibson and others.

Gibson, considered one of the greatest home run hitters, and most feared sluggers of any era, played in the Negro Leagues, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico leagues, but never played in the Major Leagues. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, the second ever Negro League player to be so honored.

Sean Gibson, Josh’s great grandson, will be in attendance and available for autographs and photos. Live music, a step show, drumming and vendor tables will also be part of the event. The first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative Negro League lanyard. “‘Negro Leagues Day’ is Hartford and Connecticut’s day to recognize the history, culture, education, and long overdue awareness of challenges and triumphs experienced by so many, including the legends like Josh Gibson, Hartford’s own, Johnny ‘Schoolboy Taylor’ and the first woman to play professional baseball full-time, Toni Stone,” said Executive Director of the Hartford Yard Goats Foundation Tiffany Young. “July 15th will mark a day of celebration through music, dance, art, and baseball for all to enjoy.”

Josh Gibson left an undeniable legacy, and to honor that legacy of achievement, the family established “The Josh Gibson Foundation” in 1994. The Josh Gibson Foundation has evolved into an organization dedicated to providing a variety of academic and athletic programs that allow the next Josh Gibson to reach his or her potential.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Gwinnett Stripers, in conjunction with the Atlanta Braves Foundation, have awarded their $2,500 June grant to Impact46 of Lawrenceville. The faith-based nonprofit focuses on education, employment, and community development to impact communities and improve cities.

In 2020, Impact46 teamed up with community partners and the City of Lawrenceville to create the Lawrenceville Response Center to help stabilize families who had lost employment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Impact46 has assisted over 1,200 people while providing over $1 million in rental assistance to help families facing eviction and/or homelessness in Gwinnett County. The organization is committed to serving the citizens of Gwinnett County as they recover from the pandemic by focusing on stabilization services and access to livable wages.

The Stripers selected Impact46 to receive the June “Service” themed grant. The $2,500 grant will be utilized by Impact46 in its effort to launch another Response Center in a neighboring city, with the goal of assisting 150 households for up to three months each.

“We are grateful to the Gwinnett Stripers for awarding us with this grant that we will use to continue to care for families who have been impacted by Covid-19,” said Jen Young, Executive Director of Impact46. “The need is still very great and we will use this grant to further our mission as we provide stabilization services to Gwinnett residents in the form of rental, employment, and nutrition assistance.”

Representatives from Impact46 will receive the grant from the Stripers during the game on Saturday, July 24.

Cardinals offering free tickets in Match Program for Healthcare Workers

June 25, 2021

Here is a link to the original story on the team's website.

From the desk of Dan Reiter, VP/GM Springfield Cardinals:

I LOVE the Springfield area. It’s home to my family, my parents, my in-laws and my friends. It’s where I graduated high school, where I’ve worked for the Cardinals for 16 years and where my wife and I choose to raise our two awesome sons. So I want to do everything I can to help our community increase their vaccination numbers for three reasons: For the health of our citizens. To support our healthcare heroes. And, because the Ozarks are only the Ozarks because of the people who live here.

For those reasons, the Springfield Cardinals will be pledging 1,000 pairs of tickets to a COVID-19 vaccination program run through the Springfield-Greene County Health Department to encourage people to vaccinate, where each vaccinated individual will leave with two tickets in hand to a 2021 Cardinals game at Hammons Field. Starting Monday, the next 1,000 people to be vaccinated at a Springfield-Greene County Health Department clinic are eligible. Visit vaccine417.com and look for “SGCHD” events or call 417-874-1211 for a list of eligible sites. And on top of that, we’ll provide a match. For every person vaccinated through the program, the Cardinals will also donate a pair of tickets to a local healthcare worker, because they deserve the downtime to relax at a ballgame.

If any of you are like the Springfield Cardinals staff and me, sometimes you feel overwhelmed with the saddening and worsening reports of sickness and over-strained health care workers, and you just don’t know what you can do to help. I appreciate everything that Mercy, the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, the City of Springfield and CoxHealth have done to help us so far. But now seems like the time to try something new, and I don’t know about you all, but I LOVE being incentivized! So that’s what the Springfield Cardinals will try to do, starting with a total of 4,000 possible tickets to donate for our friends, family and neighbors throughout Southwest Missouri to get vaccinated.

If any businesses want to help, we’d love to have you on board, however big or small. If you want to help as an individual, then consider vaccination, tell others about this opportunity, and/or stay tuned for ways to help our Match Program for Healthcare Workers. We are also going to auction Cardinals memorabilia with all proceeds allowing even more healthcare heroes to attend ballgames.

So Springfield, let’s do this! Let’s love thy neighbor, let’s find new ways to help and, of course, let’s Finish Strong!

WELLPINIT, Wash. – The Spokane Indians front office once again teamed up with local community partners to make a big difference in our region. On Wednesday, June 16th the front office joined the Boys & Girls Club of Wellpinit, Spokane Tribe Fuels Department, Spokane Tribe Maintenance Department, Tribal Department of Natural Resources, Tribal Water Department, members of the Wellpinit High School girls softball team, and community members Gladys Rhoads and Billy Shawn Flett Jr. to restore War Veterans Memorial Field in Wellpinit, Washington.

The renovation had many areas of improvement, including the installation of four large autumn blaze maple trees for shade, new field bases & measurements, new dugouts, new player benches, new signage, new trash cans, and a new main water line. The complex also had its perimeter fence repaired, bleachers repaired and painted, and the installation of a new gravel pathway and entrance. In total, 120 bags of infield Turface mix, 25 yards of bark, and 12 tons of gravel were used in the refurbishment project of War Veterans Memorial Field. The project was made possible with the approval of the Spokane Tribe Business Council and by the contributions of materials from Wittkopf Landscape Supply, a SiteOne Company.

“We’ve obviously proud of our partnership with the Spokane Tribe of Indians and are always looking to do projects together,” explained Otto Klein, Senior Vice President of the Spokane Indians Baseball Team. “The field renovation project was a fun, collaborative effort to improve a youth sports facility in the heart of the reservation. We can’t wait to see the players’ reactions when they play their next game.”

The restoration and improvement project is an extension of the historic partnership with the Spokane Tribe of Indians and the Spokane Indians Baseball Team. Welcome to clubphilanthropy.com!

Minor League Baseball clubs have been actively involved in their communities for many years. For the first time, their activities and contributions will be chronicled on this site.

Clubs don’t publicize all of their activity, so these stories represent a mere fraction of the contributions MiLB clubs make to their communities every year.
