Minors teams raise over $300,000 for disaster relief

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Minor League Baseball Charities today announced the distribution of over $180,000 in cash to charities assisting with recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Minor League Baseball’s 160 teams combined to raise over $300,000 for disaster relief.

The city of Corpus Christi, Texas, and the surrounding communities suffered significant damage during Hurricane Harvey. As a result of Minor League Baseball’s fundraising efforts, the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, made a significant donation to the Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group and will be making donations to Little League programs in Port Aransas, Rockport, Refugio, Aransas Pass and Ingleside to help the leagues repair facilities and purchase equipment that was damaged or lost in the storm.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude at the generosity of teams across Minor League Baseball as our industry meets the needs of those who have come into harm’s way,” said Corpus Christi Hooks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Andy Steavens. “These funds will help fuel recovery in the Coastal Bend as the calendar turns to 2018. It’s a long process, but we’re pleased and privileged to help and proud to be a part of this region and Minor League Baseball.”

“These donations are another example of the collective power of Minor League Baseball and our 160 teams across the country,” said Courtney Nehls, Assistant Director, Community Engagement, for Minor League Baseball. “In times of need, whether a natural disaster or otherwise, our organization and its teams have proven time and time again that together, our charitable efforts help build stronger communities.”

With the devastating flooding that took place in Houston, Minor League Baseball Charities made a significant donation to the Houston Astros Foundation to assist with its disaster relief projects, and with guidance from the Astros Foundation, made donations to the Houston Police Department’s Blue Santa Program, the Houston Food Bank and the Houston Children’s Charity, which will provide beds and linens to children when they return to their homes.

As Hurricane Irma cut a path across Florida, three Florida State League communities and one Southern League community saw extensive damage, and Minor League Baseball raised over $50,000 for relief assistance in those areas.

The Fort Myers Miracle, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, split a donation from MiLB Charities between eight worthy organizations in their community: The Harry Chapin Food Bank, Everglades Wonder Gardens, Goodwill, Lee County Schools, Midwest Food Bank, Naples Zoo, New Horizons of Southwest Florida and the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, donated their portion of the Hurricane Irma relief funds to the United Way of Charlotte County to assist with their continued recovery efforts.

The St. Lucie Mets, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the New York Mets, split their donation between the Mustard Seed Ministries, SAFER St. Lucie and the United Way of St. Lucie County.

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, donated their portion of the Hurricane Irma relief funds to the Trinity Rescue Mission Women and Children’s Center.

In addition to the $180,000 distributed by Minor League Baseball Charities, Minor League Baseball teams made donations totaling over $120,000 directly to relief organizations including the Red Cross, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.

San Jose Giants Lending Support for Fire Victims

SAN JOSE, CA– The San Jose Giants have announced their plan to support victims affected by the catastrophic fires in Northern California. Wildfires began on Sunday, October 8 and, as of Friday morning, have tragically resulted in 31 confirmed deaths, hundreds of missing person reports, over 3,500 destroyed structures, 20,000 evacuations and more than 220,000 scorched acres. The devastation is being forged by nearly two dozen sizeable fires, stretching resources thin. The firestorm is currently one of the deadliest and most damaging in California state history.

“We are deeply saddened by the many tragedies caused by the devastating wildfires and understand that this national disaster is far from over” said Daniel Orum, San Jose Giants President and CEO. “Our organization vows to provide and support relief efforts for the North Bay community during these incredibly difficult times.”

The San Jose Giants have designated Municipal Stadium as a drop-zone for supplies and will be taking a delivery truck north for those impacted by the fires on October 19. Specific items in need include: air mattresses, cots, pillows, blankets, phone chargers, dry and canned pet food, animal crates, food bowls, can openers, diapers, baby strollers, personal protection equipment (masks, latex gloves, etc.), duct tape, camp stoves, propane, water, non-perishable food items, baby food, personal hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, baby wipes, soap, etc.), toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, Band-Aids, antibacterial, duffle bags, children’s books, coloring books and coloring supplies. The San Jose Giants will contribute water, clothing, hats and blankets amongst other needed items. The organization’s front office staff is currently collaborating with local organizations in determining a drop-off location.

The San Francisco Giants also teamed up with other Bay Area sports teams to support the fire relief efforts. The teams have established a You Caring site which donors can visit by Clicking Here. OceanFirst Foundation Completes Home Runs for Heroes Grant Program

In nine years, the Home Runs for Heroes program has raised over $260,000.

LAKEWOOD, NJ – OceanFirst Foundation donated over $40,000 to area military-based non-profit organizations through the 2017 Home Runs for Heroes Program. The program is a partnership between the BlueClaws, OceanFirst Foundation, and Townsquare Media.

Home Runs for Heroes Grants provide financial support to charities that meet the emergency basic needs of veterans and local service men and women – active and retired – and their families during difficult times. Non-profits were paired with each inning of the game and each BlueClaws home run hit at FirstEnergy Park meant a $1,000 donation to the charity corresponding with the inning in which the home run was hit.

Home runs hit in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings meant $1,000 donations to two charities, so $43,000 was donated for the BlueClaws 29 home runs hit at FirstEnergy Park this year.

The program, which just completed its ninth season, has now raised $260,000 to area non-profits thanks to the donations of OceanFirst Foundation.

Darick Hall led the BlueClaws with seven home runs at FirstEnergy Park this year, while Brett Barbier hit four and Arquimedes Gamboa hit three. Austin Listi hit two, including a walk-off home run in the 12th inning of the final game of the season, bringing a $1,000 donation to the Citizens Veterans Advisory Committee. This was the lone BlueClaws home run hit in the ninth inning or extra innings this year.

The BlueClaws are the Jersey Shore’s top stop for affordable, family entertainment. The 2018 schedule has been released and 2018 BlueClaws ticket packages and group outings are currently on sale.

RoughRiders raise more than $30,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief

FRISCO, Texas (Sept. 6, 2017) – The Frisco RoughRiders Foundation raised $30,856 for Hurricane Harvey relief throughout the team’s final homestand of the regular season, which ended Sept. 4. The proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

“The outpouring of support for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey over the last week is truly inspiring,” RoughRiders Chief Operating Officer Scott Burchett said. “We’re so proud to witness the tremendous generosity of RoughRiders fans and their unwavering assistance for our neighbors along the southeast Texas coast.”

The RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, employed several fundraising efforts during the seven-game homestand, including 10 percent from all sales at the Riders Outpost team store, proceeds from special Pass the Boot activities during games, cash donations at the RoughRiders Foundation table and auctions of RoughRiders items.

Riders Outpost also has limited edition “Texas Tough” T-Shirts available both in store and online for a minimum $10 donation to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. More than 1,000 t-shirts have been ordered and will continue to be available at roughriders.milbstore.com through Friday, Sept. 8.

Local Pro Sports Teams Combining Efforts on Disaster Relief and Recovery in Oregon and Around the Country

PORTLAND, Ore. (September 5, 2017) – With disaster response and relief efforts happening in their own communities and across the country, the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA), Portland Timbers (MLS), Portland Thorns FC (NWSL), Portland Winterhawks (Western Hockey League) and Hillsboro Hops (Northwest League) will band together to raise much-needed funds and blood donations to channel through the American Red Cross. This is the first joint-philanthropic initiative among the five local professional franchises focusing on a specific cause – to bring aid to victims of Oregon’s wildfires; Hurricane Harvey in Texas; and the potential impact of Hurricane Irma in Florida.

“The destruction we’ve seen from the Oregon wildfires and Hurricane Harvey is heartbreaking,” said Chris McGowan, President & CEO of the Trail Blazers and Rose Quarter. “The journey to recovery will be a long one for all impacted areas. The professional sports community here in Portland is rallying our respective fan bases, employees and partners to contribute resources to assist in the effort where it’s needed most.”

“Our hearts go out to the families and individuals affected by the devastating fires in Oregon and the communities in Southeast Texas as they begin the process to rebuild and heal,” said Mike Golub, President of Business for the Timbers and Thorns FC. “By working together with our local partners, we are able to maximize our collective impact in support of the communities affected by the devastation caused by these disasters.”

The first steps taken will be to hold individual blood drives starting tomorrow, with each team hosting its own specially-designated day at the headquarters for the Portland American Red Cross, located at 3131 North Vancouver Avenue. The need for blood is constant and the American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood and blood products to hospitals in the nation.

Fundraising efforts by each team will take place in the coming weeks and months at select home games and events to be announced soon. The Timbers, Thorns FC and Hops seasons are currently underway, with the Winterhawks and Trail Blazers beginning their 2017-18 seasons soon. Additional information will be posted on each team’s website and through their social media channels.

Flying Squirrels Announce Hurricane Relief Efforts

RVA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, have teamed up with the American Red Cross, VCU & Hilldrup Moving & Storage in an effort to help raise funds and items for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Flying Squirrels Charities, a nonprofit 501 (c)3, will be leading off the efforts with a $2,000 donation on behalf of Flying Squirrels fans. This donation, along with any cash donations received from fans at The Diamond to the American Red Cross Thursday-Sunday, will be matched by Minor League Baseball Charities (up to $10,000).

Additionally, Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., The Diamond will be a donation center for items needed in Houston-area shelters (specific items listed below). VCU Head Basketball Coach Mike Rhoades, a former Houston-resident, is spearheading the relief efforts. Rhoades and his family will be on hand to assist in taking donations at The Diamond, Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. VCU basketball players as well as Flying Squirrels players, will accompany Rhoades at the park in rotating shifts.

“I know RVA will once again come through for those that need our help,” said VCU Head Basketball Coach Mike Rhoades. “We need you to contribute and assist all those in the Houston-area who were decimated by this terrible storm. This initiative will directly make it better for those that need it. My family, our team and our VCU community will be actively involved at The Diamond.”

The Red Cross will be at The Diamond from Thursday-Sunday and will be accepting cash donations. Fans can also donate to the American Red Cross through the coded link provided here to receive a matching contribution from MiLB Charities. The Flying Squirrels will also donate the proceeds from Saturday’s raffle and Launch-A-Ball to the relief effort. A silent auction will also be a contributor during Saturday’s game.

“Obviously, our hearts go out to all involved in Texas,” said Flying Squirrels VP & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We have several players and front office staff who we care deeply about, who have families and friends deeply affected by this and we always want to do what s right and lead here in Richmond, so we were happy to be involved in this with our partners at VCU and Hilldrup Moving and Storage.”

VA Blood Services will also be at The Diamond on Saturday from 1-4 p.m., for those who wish to give blood. Blood is a much a needed commodity in the relief effort. A financial contribution wiull be made on behalf of each participating donor

Blue Rocks to Help Raise Money for Hurricane Harvey Victims

Wilmington, DE – With the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in Houston and the region of southeast Texas, the Wilmington Blue Rocks are partnering with their fans to help raise funds and provide relief for the communities impacted by the historic storm.

The Blue Rocks will donate $2 for every box seat and reserve box seat purchased online using the promo code RELIEF, for games from Saturday, September 2 through Monday, September 4. Additionally, the Blue Rocks will donate all proceeds from the team’s Hurl the Pearl promotion, along with the proceeds raised from their Launch-a-Ball contest on Saturday, September 2. The club is also having an online auction of original artwork featuring mascots Rocky Bluewinkle and Mr. Celery, with all proceeds going directly to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the people of the Texas Gulf Coast during this very challenging time,” said Blue Rocks owner Dave Heller. “Whether it be money or needed clothes, we are asking all of our fans to join us in helping our fellow citizens along the Gulf. And with Minor League Baseball matching fans’ donations, we are really hopeful that our fans, along with the great baseball fans across the country, can make a real difference to Americans in need.”

Starting on Saturday, September 2, the Red Cross will set up monetary donation buckets outside the gates at the ballpark and GreenDrop will have donation boxes for fans to give new or gently used clothing during the final three games of the 2017 regular season.

“The damage that Hurricane Harvey has caused to the regions impacted is catastrophic,” said Blue Rocks General Manager Andrew Layman. “The Blue Rocks are happy to contribute to the relief fund for Hurricane Harvey. I know our great fans will also be pleased to know that the proceeds from the multiple ways we plan to raise funds and the donation boxes that will be stationed at the ballpark will be aiding the victims affected by the storm.”

Minor League Baseball Charities will also match all donations provided by its teams, up to $10,000, and will send the collective funds to organization(s) selected by the MiLB office and those clubs whose communities are affected.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks conclude their 2017 regular season at home with seven games to be played in six days. ‘Cakes accepting donations for Harvey relief

The New Orleans Baby Cakes will be raising money and supplies for victims of Hurricane Harvey during the team’s final homestand of the season from September 1-4.

From each ticket sold during for the four games, $1 will be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey relief fund, and will be matched by MiLB Charities. Donations will also be accepted at Customer Service during the games.

By making a donation, fans will be able to enter a drawing to win prizes ranging from autographed baseballs from current Major League home run leader Giancarlo Stanton and Hall of Famer Andre Dawson, to 2018 season experiences such as ceremonial first pitches and exclusive field access. All proceeds will be donated to hurricane relief.

Additionally, the ‘Cakes have teamed with the Junior League of New Orleans to collect supplies for storm victims. Fans bringing the following items to Sunday’s Fan Appreciation Night will receive a FREE ticket to the 6 p.m. game, which features postgame fireworks:

Donate to hurricane relief efforts this weekend

Let’s pitch in Toledo! To help those affected by Hurricane Harvey, the Toledo Mud Hens will host a donation drive at Fifth Third Field during our final homestand of the season, from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Fans are encouraged to bring donations of canned food and other needed items and drop them off at Guest Services located on the Main Concourse. All items will be given to Impact with Hope to assist with that organization’s relief efforts.

Legends team up with WKYT and the American Red Cross to help Harvey victims

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – The Lexington Legends, WKYT and the American Red Cross are teaming up to help those in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The Lexington Legends are giving back $1 for each ticket issued to Wednesday’s August 30 double header against the Augusta GreenJackets. Volunteers from the American Red Cross will also be at the game to collect money at the gates as fans enter Whitaker Bank Ballpark. In addition, the Legends are also donating $5 for every Legends hit, walk, and stolen base during the double header. The video boards will be showcasing “Text HARVEY to 90999,” the “Text to Give” number for fans to make an automatic $10 donation to the American Red Cross. This code will also be featured on the video boards throughout the Red, White and Boom 2017 Music Festival taking place at Whitaker Bank Ballpark September 1-3.

“Minor League Baseball has announced that MiLB Charities will be matching all Harvey Relief fundraising efforts its clubs collect, up to $10,000” said Andy Shea, Legends President and CEO. “The Legends want to be able to give as much as they can and we ask our fans to help the American Red Cross and those affected in Texas, in any way they are able — join us at the ballpark on August 30.”

Also taking place August 30, American Red Cross board members and volunteers will be taking donations over the phone at WKYT between 4 and 7 p.m., with live cut-ins to the ballpark with WKYT Sports Director Brian Milam. There will also be a live radio-a-thon from the Kentucky Ale Taproom inside of Whitaker Bank Ballpark for fans to call in and donate. Radio stations participating in the radio-a-thon to be announced later by the American Red Cross.

By donating to the American Red Cross relief effort, Kentuckians can show they stand with Texas after the devastating hurricane damage and flooding impacting the Lone Star state.

The American Red Cross says there are more than 17,000 people in Texas seeking refuge in shelters. Red Cross spokesman Don Lauritzen said Tuesday that there are 45 shelters in the Houston area, along the Gulf Coast and elsewhere. He says more are opening in Louisiana.

“The American Red Cross is grateful to partner with the Lexington Legends as we respond to the needs from Hurricane Harvey” said Tawanda Owsley, Executive Director of the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross. “The Red Cross has launched a massive response to this devastating storm and needs financial donations to be able to provide immediate disaster relief. Help people affected by Hurricane Harvey by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-REDCROSS or texting the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster.”

ValleyCats to donate portion of ticket sales to American Red Cross for disaster relief in Texas

TROY, NY – The Tri-City ValleyCats have announced that they will be donating $1.00 of each ticket sold between Monday, August 28 and Saturday, September 1 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey disaster relief in Texas.

The ValleyCats are a Class-A minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, who have been particularly affected by severe flooding in and around the Houston, Texas area. The Corpus Christi Hooks, a Double-A affiliate of the Astros, have also been severely affected.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those currently dealing with the horrendous situation in Texas, including the entire Houston Astros organization, those with the Corpus Christi Hooks, their friends, family, and fans,” said Matt Callahan, ValleyCats General Manager. “We stand by them during this tough time, and want to do what we can to assist in the ongoing relief efforts.”

There are currently four members of the ValleyCats roster who call Texas home, including pitcher Corbin Martin, who is from Houston and has family members dealing with the severe flooding. ValleyCats outfielder Corey Julks, who played at the University of Houston, is from nearby Friendswood, Texas, and also has close family and friends affected.

“Our hearts go out to the thousands of people affected by this catastrophic disaster in Texas”, said Kevin Coffey, American Red Cross Eastern NY Regional Chief Development Officer. “The Red Cross has launched a massive response to this devastating storm and needs financial donations to be able to provide immediate disaster relief. We know this is a challenging and emotional time, and Red Cross staff and volunteers are working around the clock to get help to where it is needed most.”

Harrisburg Senators Donating Portion of Online Tickets to American Red Cross to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

The Harrisburg Senators are asking their fans to help them raise relief dollars for the devastation in the Houston area due to Hurricane, now Tropical Storm, Harvey. With nearly 50″ inches of rain expected this week and tens of thousands of people affected, the Senators want to help the relief effort.

Beginning today through Wednesday, $4 out of every $10 box seat ticket sold online for our Monday through Wednesday games will be donated to the American Red Cross. To purchase a ticket and have the money donated simply use the promo code word RELIEF. This offer is good for online ticket sales only.

NATURALS PARTNER WITH AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

SPRINGDALE, Ark – The Northwest Arkansas Naturals are proud to partner with the American Red Cross on a blood drive in August. An emergency call for blood and platelet donations was issued due to a current shortage.

Recently it was announced that the American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage and has issued an emergency call for the need of blood and platelet donations as right now there is more blood being distributed to hospitals than being donated. Thus the American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive in August and the Naturals are teaming up with them to try and reach a goal of over 150 donors at blood drives across the region.

Each person that donates blood or platelets to the American Red Cross from August 1 through August 15 will receive a voucher for two (2) FREE Dugout Premium tickets to the Naturals 7:05 p.m. game on Tuesday, August 22 against the Springfield Cardinals (Double-A St. Louis Cardinals). The voucher will need to be turned into the Arvest Ballpark Box Office in advance or on the day of the game where it will be exchanged for the best available seats.

Save lives: Mud Hens Blood Drive is Wednesday, 7/5

Did you know every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and that one pint of blood can save up to 3 lives? To help meet demand for donations and to raise awareness about the need for new donors, the annual Mud Hens Blood Drive will be held on Wednesday, July 5, from 2-7 p.m.

The blood drive will be held inside the Top of Nine banquet area (see on map) located on the fourth floor at 406 Washington St. adjacent to Fifth Third Field.

Helping Hand: Power donate $50,000

September 29, 2016

Charleston, WV (September 29, 2016) –  The West Virginia Power, in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Pirates, are pleased to announce that their ongoing flood relief efforts have raised $50,000 for the West Virginia Region of the American Red Cross. The flooding that occurred in late June devastated 44 counties across the state of West Virginia and the Power immediately began relief efforts at Appalachian Power Park. Power fans and many of the team’s partners made sizable donations to the collection efforts, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pyrotechnico and Success Promotions.

“Our community was hit hard by this natural disaster,” stated Ken Fogel, Executive Vice President of the West Virginia Power. “Our fans, employees, friends and even some corporate partners were affected by the flooding. It was our goal to help in any way possible to begin the relief and recovery process. We are thrilled by the response and the donation we can now make on behalf of those who support us.”

During Power games, the team also used a variety of avenues enabling fans help the flood relief efforts as well. In addition to donation points located around the ballpark, charity t-shirts printed by T-Graphics were sold, proceeds from the nightly 50-50 were allocated and a portion of online tickets sales were donated to the relief effort.

The Power and Pirates Charities worked together to collect and donate dog food for the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. KCHA spent the weeks following the flooding rescuing animals displaced during the disaster. Power fans could drop bags of dog food off at the park and the players held a dog food drive at PetSmart in Southridge. On August 9, Pirates Baseball Charities arranged for 50 pallets of dog food to be delivered on behalf of the West Virginia Power and Ainsworth, one of the Pittsburgh Pirates partners.

“We are proud to partner with everyone at the West Virginia Power in support of the recovery efforts of those effected by the historic and devastating floods.” said Bob Nutting, the Pittsburgh Pirates Chairman. “The Power organization is a Pirates affiliate both on and off the field, as we both share in the same deep rooted commitment to help improve the lives of those in need.”
