Legends invite non-profits for CON program

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends are inviting non-profit organizations to participate in their Community Organization of the Night program during the 2013 season.

The Community Organization program offers non-profits a variety of opportunities to publicize their work at Whitaker Bank Ballpark and on Legends radio broadcasts during each of the Legends’ 70 home games. Hundreds of organizations throughout central and eastern Kentucky have participated.

“The Legends place a huge emphasis on being a strong community partner,” said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. “With that in mind, it’s really the least we can do to open up our facility and allow 70 unique non-profit organizations the opportunity to spread their message and raise awareness among the thousands of Legends fans that come through our gates each year. ”

Organizations may set up a display on the concourse, where they can greet fans and distribute information. Before the game, a representative of each Community Organization of the Night is interviewed on the public address system. The representative also is a guest on the radio broadcast for a half-inning during the game. Each organization receives four complimentary tickets to their game. Solicitation is not permitted.

The Legends have added a fund-raising element to the program for 2013. To maximize exposure and to boost fund-raising, organizations that reserve their night for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday game will purchase a minimum of 50 Legends fundraiser tickets at three dollars each. Fundraiser tickets may then be sold by the organization for up to the regular face value of nine dollars.

“Each organization may keep the funds raised, which could be as much as six dollars per ticket sold,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends director of community relations and special events. “You’ll have more supporters up in the stands, and you’ll have a fun group out to enjoy a Legends game.”

The Legends, a class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, will open their home season Monday, April 8 at 7:05 p.m. against the Asheville Tourists, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. More information is available at lexingtonlegends.com.

Hits for Home Invitational will benefit tornado-affected communities in Kentucky

Sixteen Kentucky high school teams to compete in the invitational with funds going to those affected by the tornadoes.

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – Whitaker Bank and the Lexington Legends will serve as hosts for the Hits for Home Invitational March 13-16.  Proceeds will go to the Salvation Army, which will then allocate funds to assist communities affected by the March 2012 tornadoes.

Sixteen Kentucky high school baseball teams, many of them representing tornado-affected areas, will participate in the eight-game event at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Legends, who are a class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

Tickets to each session (two games per day) are five dollars per person at the gates on the days of the games.  There will be no advance sale of tickets.  Raffle tickets will be available for purchase.  Winning tickets will be drawn and prizes awarded at the end of the final day of competition.

“We are super excited to be part of this event,” said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat.  “It’s a great way to give back in some small way to those communities that were devastated last year.”

The worst of the severe weather hit Kentucky on March 2, 2012, causing 24 deaths.  More than 300 people were injured, and many Kentuckians are still struggling to repair and rebuild their lives, homes and communities.

Rock Cats to Host Welcome Home Player Dinner for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center

The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, has announced its “Welcome Home Dinner” will take place on Tuesday, April 2 at Hawks Landing Country Club in Southington.  Fans will have the opportunity to have dinner with the players before the 2013 season starts.  A team autograph session will take place at 5:00pm and dinner will be served at 6:00 pm with each table featuring a player or coach.  The Rock Cats Foundation along with the New Britain Elks Lodge #957, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Gordon Bonetti Florist will sponsor the annual “meet the team” event, as the club arrives from spring training.  Individual tickets are only $35 for adults and $25 for children (12 and under), with the proceeds benefiting the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.  Tickets are on sale at the box office or by calling the Rock Cats at 860-224-8383 ext 22.  Tables and event sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses.  Tickets are sold on a first come first serve basis. This popular event is expected to sell out.

The Annual “Rock Cats Welcome Home Dinner” serves as an occasion to celebrate the arrival of spring and the start of another professional baseball season in Connecticut.  Members of the Rock Cats organization- players, coaches, front office personnel and Rocky, (the team’s popular mascot)- will be present at this festive dinner.  As in the past, Rock Cats players will meet and greet all those in attendance, while also expressing their collective appreciation for the tremendous support the community has extended to this franchise for more than three decades.

Proceeds from the “Rock Cats Welcome Home Dinner” will benefit the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, which is dedicated to improving the physical and emotional health of children through family-centered care, research, education and advocacy.  “This unique event provides the public a unique opportunity to spend an evening with the players they will be rooting for this season while benefiting a wonderful cause in the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center,” Rock Cats President John Willi said.

The Rock Cats open their 31st season on April 4 in Richmond, Virginia and return to the Hardware City a week later on Thursday, April 11 (6:05) for the home opener against the Red Sox affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs.

Drive Give Back Through United Way

The Drive’s mission and goals go deeper than simply providing a postive entertainment experience. The Drive brand has been built around a commitment to being a part of the fabric of the community, and that community includes many individuals who rarely ever have the opportunity to enjoy the fun of a game at Fluor Field.

All around the ballpark and across Greenville, there are children and adults who face quality of life challenges as fundamental as having the basic physical necessities and emotional support then need to even begin to enjoy life.

One very meaningful and important way that the Drive demonstrates our concern for our Community, beyond the fences of Fluor Field, is through the United Way. The United Way is a vital source of financial support for numerous charitable organizations who meet critical needs in the lives of people here in Greenville County, many of whom live right in our own neighborhood.

Cutters banquet raises over $4,000 for YWCA

With a star-studded guest list and a jam-packed Genetti Ballroom, the Williamsport Crosscutters 7th Annual Hot Stove Banquet was a great success while raising over $4,000 for charity.

On a snowy winter night in Williamsport, Phillies pitcher Justin DeFratus, 2-time Cy Young Award winner Denny McLain, local hero Tom O’Malley & Phillies front office personnel entertained attendees with stories and answered audience questions.

The night, presented by HB Rentals, Woodlands Bank, WRAK Radio and the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, was also highlighted by live and Chinese auctions that featured a wealth of sports memorabilia including a bat signed by Phillies all-star first baseman Ryan Howard, baseballs signed by Phils catcher Carlos Ruiz, pitcher Cole Hamels, hall-of-famers Rod Carew, Dave Winfield and many others.

Other highlights of the event included the induction of Lou Hunsinger, Jr. into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. Hunsinger, the President of the Bowman Field Commission and longtime baseball historian was part of a group that helped salvage hundreds of historic baseball photos in danger of being lost to posterity from the files of The Grit newspaper and publishing company. Through those efforts, the Grit Baseball Photograph Collection was donated to the James. V. Brown Library and subsequently inventoried, organized and cataloged.

A portion of the proceeds from the evening were donated to YWCA of Northcentral PA whose mission is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. At the conclusion of the festivities, the YWCA was presented with a check for $4,075.

A catcher for the Spinners in 2010 and 2011, Hernandez spent his 2012 season playing with the Portland Sea Dogs. During his time with the Spinners, the outgoing and popular Hernandez was a staple at Spinners’ camps and community appearances, often catching ceremonial pitches on his day off or spending time signing autographs for fans.

“Baseball is full of good guys and Jayson is one of the best,” said Spinners Director of Media Relations Jon Boswell. “It comes as no surprise that he is behind the efforts to support his New Jersey neighbors and peers in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.”

Donald Driver Charity Softball Game to return to Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in 2013

GRAND CHUTE, WI – Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium will host the 2013 Donald Driver Charity Softball Game sponsored by Kwik Trip for the sixth straight season. The offense and defense of the Green Bay Packers face each other in a softball game at the newly renovated home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday, June 16 at 1:05pm.

Driver is the Green Bay Packers all time leading receiver, a Super Bowl champion, Dancing With The Stars Champion, and a multiple time Donald Driver Charity Softball Champion.

“I am excited to host the game again this year. It is a special time for fans and players to enjoy each other while raising money for some wonderful causes,” said Driver. “My wife Betina and I are thankful for the loyal fans who continue to support the Donald Driver Foundation. Hopefully, the defense will put up a bigger challenge to our offense this time.”

A record crowd of 8,745 saw the offense defeat the defense 22-10 in 2012. That game featured a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, by quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Fans may purchase tickets for the game as part of a package starting November 6 at 10:00am. The ticket package includes three Timber Rattlers games and the Donald Driver game:

The game raises money for the Donald Driver Foundation. Donald and Betina Driver started the foundation to help homeless families, to support health and wellness initiatives, and to improve educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth in Wisconsin and nationally.

Patio tables seat four people and include waitstaff service and an autographed item from Donald Driver.

All You Can Eat Seats are available for $80 for the softball game only. These seats are located on the first base side of the stadium, include a ticket to the Donald Driver Charity Softball Game and an all-you-can eat picnic. These seats go on sale November 14.

RiverDogs Staff Raise Funds for American Heart Association

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Lowcountry Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s mission in action. This annual celebration promotes physical activity and heart healthy living in a fun, family and dog friendly environment. There is a Survivor Reception for Cardiovascular & Stroke survivors and their caregivers. More than 5000 walkers are anticipated to participate in this non competitive one or three mile walk event. As our signature fundraising event, the Lowcountry Heart Walk is raising critical dollars for the American Heart Association’s lifesaving mission.

The Charleston RiverDogs front office staff started a Heart Walk team with a collective fundraising goal of $1,500. By the day of the Heart Walk, the RiverDogs staff were able to donate a total of $1,675 for the American Heart Association.

American-Heart-Association-On September 29th, a police-estimated 5,200 people — men and women of all ages and ethnicities — gathered to celebrate survival, “miracles” and raised a projected $650,000 to help more fight the No. 1 killer of Americans, cardiovascular disease and defects. The walk also focuses on lifestyle change to improve heart health.

This year’s Heart Walk chairwoman, Anita Zucker, said the event helps highlight the Heart Association’s goal to reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent by 2020.

“To reach this goal, we must start in our communities across the nation,” urges Zucker. “Thank you for committing today to stand for positive change in our community. Today is the day we begin to walk more, eat better and live longer.”

4th Annual Braves Celebrity Shootout Golf Tournament

The Rome Braves and Floyd County Police Department announced today the date for the 4th Annual Braves Celebrity Shootout to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The day will consist of registration and driving range at 9:30am, a shotgun start at 11am, followed by an awards reception after the tournament. Food and drinks will be provided. The golf tournament will be held on Friday November 9 at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome. Teams or individuals can register at the Floyd County Police Station or at the ticket office located at State Mutual Stadium, home of the Rome Braves. Hole and team sponorships are available as well.

Celebrity participants include members of the Atlanta Braves coaching staff as well as minor league field staff. Past participants have included current Atlanta Braves third base coach, Brian Snitker, former Rome Braves manager and current Gulf Coast Braves manager Rocket Wheeler, current Rome Manager Randy Ingle, and former Rome Braves players.

The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization dedicated to raising awareness and enlisting the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to helping injured service members aid and assist each other; and providing unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.

IronPigs’ Wives Hosting Sock & Underwear Drive

The IronPigs player’s wives are hosting the 2nd annual Sock and Underwear Drive prior to the IronPigs-Bisons game on August 8, 2012, at Coca-Cola Park. The drive will benefit the Lehigh County Conference of Churches, Allentown Rescue Mission and New Bethany Ministries.

For each and every donation, fans will receive raffle tickets to win a variety of great autographed memorabilia. Receive one raffle ticket for each newly packaged pair of socks or piece of underwear donated. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Sock and Underwear Drive.

Pitch for the Cure Breast Cancer Walk Returns for 2012

The 7th Annual Pitch for the Cure raises money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Spokane, WA – The Spokane Indians announced today that their annual Pitch for the Cure Breast Cancer Walk presented by Mike’s Hard Pink Lemonade will return for 2012 on Saturday, August 25th at Avista Stadium. This marks the seventh consecutive year that the Indians and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation have collaborated on the event, with proceeds benefiting the Eastern Washington Chapter of the Komen Foundation.”The Eastern Washington Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is excited about the Pitch for the Cure,” said Executive Director Claudia Bell. “We appreciate the on-going support of the Spokane Indians, who over the last seven years have raised nearly $20,000 for our mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever.”

Check in for the event is at 5:30 p.m. with the walk set to begin at 6:00 p.m. The one mile, flat walk circles around Avista Stadium before finishing on the field, where the participants will be recognized in a special pre-game ceremony. The game against Salem-Keizer begins at 6:30 p.m. as Spokane players will be wearing special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off to support the cause.

The cost for the walk is $25 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under. Participants receive a technical t-shirt, a donation in their name to the Eastern WA affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and a ticket to the Spokane Indians baseball game that night against Salem-Keizer.

Deadline for registration is Wednesday, August 8th, with a late registration fee of $5. Packet pick-up is scheduled for Friday, August 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Avista Stadium and the day of the walk starting at 5:00 p.m. at Avista Stadium.

In addition to Mike’s Hard Pink Lemonade, supporting sponsors for this year’s Pitch for the Cure include Itron, Pepsi, and Ross Printing. Media sponsors include The Big 99.9 Coyote Country and KXLY 920 AM.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston RiverDogs, the South Atlantic League affiliate of the New York Yankees, will host their 13th Annual “Kindness Beats Blindness” RP Auction on July 28 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

All the proceeds for the event will go to the Medical University of South Carolina’s Storm Eye Institute, which is dedicated to researching ways to try to prevent the loss of sight. The silent auction will begin when the gates open at 6 pm and will conclude in the sixth inning.

Those in attendance will have ample opportunity to “Be Your Own Fan” while taking home once-in-a-lifetime items, and lending a helping hand to a worthy cause in the process.

There will also be various sports memorabilia, with items autographed by Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro, former Atlanta Braves All-Star John Smoltz, current Braves star Chipper Jones, New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte and many more.

All fans that enter the ballpark are eligible to bid on the various goods and services. More than $400,000 has been donated to the Storm Eye Institute to help fight Retinitis Pigmentosa, a disease that causes blindness and has affected Rebecca Veeck, the daughter of RiverDogs President Mike Veeck.

“We put a lot of effort into this annual auction because we firmly believe in the cause,” said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. “Blindness hits us hard because of Rebecca, and we are trying to do our part to fight this disease that affects so many. Hopefully, raising needed funds for research will help prevent this terrible disease.”

Additionally, the first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday, July 28, will receive a free Jorts Patch, courtesy of WTAT Fox 24.

BURLINGTON, VT — On Wednesday, July 4, Travelers, a leading provider of auto, home and business insurance, and the 2012 Vermont Lake Monsters hosted “Travelers Night at the Ballpark.” Mayor Miro Weinberger joined fans to “Chip for Charity” at the Travelers Chipping Challenge and Fan Zone, and later threw out the first pitch, helping Travelers raise $5,000 for the Turning Point Center of Chittenden County. Travelers and Mayor Weinberger presented the check on field following the first pitch at Centennial Field.
The Travelers Chipping Challenge is an interactive experience that includes taking a golf shot at a floating green in the shape of the iconic Travelers red umbrella for the chance to win some great prizes. Additional fan activities at the Travelers Night at the Ballpark included the Travelers Putting Challenge, where fans who made two out of three putts received a prize, as well as the Travelers photo experience, where fans posed for their personalized cover of the Lake Monsters game program.Be sure to sign up for the ultimate Travelers VIP experience out at Centennial Field at the fans relations table. The Travelers VIP Fan Experience includes 25 tickets for a lucky winner and his/her friends, on-field access to meet the Vermont Lake Monsters field manager and current players, and a signed Lake Monsters Jersey. The Hudson Valley Renegades are teaming up with local non-profits for “Collection for a Cause” days throughout the 2012 season. On the selected days, the Renegades are asking fans to donate the selected items in exchange for $1 General Admission Tickets.

Monday, July 30: Elant – organization is asking for the following items; Word Search, Crosswords, Puzzle Books, Large Print Hardcover Books Nail Polish, White Tube Socks, Playing Cards, CD’s and DVD’s (new), $5 Gift Cards for Walmart or Target..

Thursday, August 9: Gifts From the Heart For Downs: – organization is asking for unused/gently used sneakers that are used to support wishes for those with Downs.

Wednesday, August 22: ARCS – organization in need of Toiletries/Personal Hygiene Products.

Tuesday, August 28: Ronald McDonald House Charities -The Ronald McDonald House will be accepting gift cards from food, office supplies, home improvement stores, etc. to help their families in need.

Items may be dropped off at the Hudson Valley Renegades Ticket Office in exchange for a $1 General Admission Tickets for the “Collection For A Cause” selected date.

Syracuse Chiefs to host Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Friday, July 20

Event will raise money for the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY

Syracuse, NY- The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are proud to announce the club will host its second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Alliance Bank Stadium on Friday, July 20, when the Chiefs host the Norfolk Tides. All money raised from the event will be donated to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of Central New York, which gives $250,000 worth of grants to SUNY Upstate Medical every year for breast cancer research.

All fans are invited to attend a “Pink Cocktail Party” in Alliance Bank Stadium’s Hank Sauer Room with Carol M. Baldwin and her son, actor Billy Baldwin. Admission to the party is $50 per person and includes dinner, a game ticket, and parking pass. The Baldwin mother-son duo will throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch as well.

“As an organization, we’re glad to support such a worthy cause like the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of Central New York,” Chiefs General Manager John Simone said. “Hopefully, even if it’s only in small way, we can contribute to finding a cure.”

In keeping with the theme of Breast Cancer Awareness Night, Chiefs players and coaches will don pink and black jerseys and hats for the 7:00pm game with the Tides. Some players will also wear pink batting gloves and use pink bats and mitts. Additionally, Alliance Bank Stadium’s Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Awareness merchandise cart will be set up, as it is for every Chiefs home game, to sell Pink bracelets, t-shirts, flip-flops, lanyards, and rings.

“The most important part of the fund is that 100% of the money that we raise locally stays locally and goes to research so that we can find a cure,” said Laurence Segal, a Chiefs employee and Carol M. Baldwin Fund volunteer.

Last year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Alliance Bank Stadium raised $6,000 for breast cancer research. In total, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY has fundraised more than $7 million for research.

“The Baldwin Family and the Simone Family are coming together with two passions,” said Elizabeth Baldwin, executive director of the fund. “One is baseball and the other is finding the cure for breast cancer, so that together we will find a cure.”
