Legends, Royals team up on Project Purple Aug. 23

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends are teaming up with their major league affiliate, the Kansas City Royals, for a Project Purple night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Friday, August 23.

Project Purple is an initiative of The Herren Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player Chris Herren. Project Purple assists individuals and families struggling with addiction. It was established to break the stigma of addiction, increase awareness of the dangers of substance abuse and shed light on effective treatment practices.

Legends’ players will wear purple caps with the Royals “KC” logo during the August 23 game against Greenville. A silent auction for the caps will be conducted during the game. The winning bidders will go on the field after the game to receive their cap, which will be autographed by the Legends player who wore that cap during the game. All proceeds from the auction will directly benefit the Herron Project/Project Purple.

Fans are encouraged to wear purple to the game, and those who do may buy a box seat ticket for the special price of seven dollars.

Project Purple information and items such as t-shirts and rubber bracelets will be available at tables on the concourse near the silent auction tables.

“The Kansas City Royals are proud to partner with the Lexington Legends and The Herren Project to promote and support Project Purple,” said Royals director of player development Scott Sharp. “We were fortunate to have Chris speak to our players during spring training about his struggles with substance abuse. He made a tremendous impact on our athletes, and we are proud to support him and his foundation in educating youth and adolescents about the pitfalls of substance abuse and addiction.”

Saved by the Bell’s Mr. Belding to host Teacher Appreciation Night

TV Actor Dennis Haskins appears at Arvest Ballpark August 29th

Springdale, AR – Dennis Haskins, the actor who portrayed Mr. Belding on the iconic TV Series “Saved by the Bell”, will be in attendance to host the Northwest Arkansas Naturals’ Teacher Appreciation Night on Thursday, August 29th at 7pm at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale. The event will also feature a Naturals Post-Game Fireworks Spectacular!

 

“I am excited to visit Northwest Arkansas,” said Haskins, who grew up in Chattanooga, TN and attended UTC before pursuing a career in Television, Stage, and Film. “I have heard so many great things about the area. Dennis Haskins was a featured cast member on NBC’s Saved by the Bell as the Principal, Mr. Belding, at the fictitious Bayside High School for the show’s entire run from 1989 through 1993. He appeared on two spin-offs of the program and two feature-length films also based on the series. Since then, Haskins has appeared in numerous hit TV series like AMC’s Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother on CBS, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on FX. In 2009, he also released a music album.

Legends host Breast Cancer Awareness dinner

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends will hold their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Dinner Friday, July 12 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Kentucky Ale Taproom at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The event is sponsored by LBX and is open to the public.

The program will include introduction of makeover winners by Janie Olmstead of Images Model and Talent Agency and a panel from the Markey Cancer Center.

“Our annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night promises to be special, as it is every year,” said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. “Having lost my own mother to breast cancer, this event carries extra meaning for me, but I know I am far from alone. It’s a great opportunity to spend some time with so many brave survivors, take in a Legends game, and raise a lot of money all at the same time.”

The dinner is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark. The Legends will play the Delmarva Shorebirds at 7:05 p.m. Friday, and Legends players will wear special pink jerseys that will be auctioned after the game, with proceeds going to the Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky Pink Connection and Susan G. Komen.

Naturals, Great Day Farms Partner on Free Baseball Clinic

Kids invited to signup for FREE clinic prior to June 30th game

Great Day Farms, along with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals players and coaches are teaming up for the sixth annual Youth Baseball Clinic at Arvest Ballpark, to be held from 2 until 4 P.M. on Sunday, June 30th prior to that night’s 6:00pm game against the Frisco RoughRiders.

The clinic is open to children ages 6-12 and will cover instruction of key baseball fundamentals, including hitting, fielding, pitching, and baserunning. All participants will be given a complimentary general admission ticket to that evening’s game against the RoughRiders, and the first 300 children to the clinic will also receive a free Great Day Farms t-shirt.

An autograph session with select Naturals players will follow the instruction portion of the clinic and will occur along the 1st base side of the concourse lasting approximately 15 minutes.

There is a sign-up form located on the Naturals website, nwanaturals.com, under the community menu that interested parents can print, fill out, and then fax or mail in to register their children for the clinic. The youth baseball clinic is also open to local youth coaches as they may also fill out the form and fax in their roster to register their entire teams. The deadline to register for the event is Friday, June 28th, but participants are encouraged to sign up quickly, as previous seasons events filled to capacity prior to the deadline. Sign-up begins at the ballpark at 1:30pm so we ask that you arrive early as participation is limited to the first 500 children. Chasers to Hold Auctions for Oklahoma Tornado Relief for Remainder of Homestand

All proceeds from Storm Chasers/MLB merchandise will go to help devastated area of Moore, Oklahoma

OMAHA, Neb. – The tragic events in Moore, Oklahoma over the past few days have hit close to home with the Omaha Storm Chasers, not only because of the storm and tornado history associated with the state of Nebraska and the Omaha Metro but also due to the Pacific Coast League membership of the Oklahoma City RedHawks, whose home park is located just fifteen minutes away from the city of Moore.

As a way to show their support, the Omaha Storm Chasers will use the remainder of this current homestand that runs through Thursday to attempt to raise money by holding silent auctions of Storm Chasers, Kansas City Royals and Major League Baseball merchandise. All proceeds will go to the relief efforts in Moore, Oklahoma, and fans will have the opportunity to place their bids on items varying from autographed jerseys, baseballs, bats and game-used cleats from MLB Players/Hall of Famers such as:

  • Joe Torre, Former Player and Manager, current Director of Baseball Operations for MLB
  • Alex Gordon, current Kansas City Royals star and former Omaha Royals outfielder
  • Wil Myers, 2012 Minor League Player of the Year and former Omaha Storm Chasers outfielder
  • Ryne Sandberg, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this unthinkable tragedy, and we hope the money raised during the rest of our homestand will help the area of our Pacific Coast League teammate,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “We believe our fans will join us in this effort to help this devastated part of our great country.”

Bids will be accepted during all three remaining games of the homestand, with the option for fans to purchase the item at an elevated donation price. The auction will close following the completion of Thursday’s series finale with the Padres, and the winners of each item will be contacted Friday morning

Also during the remainder of the homestand, the Omaha Storm Chasers will be informing fans in attendance of the ways they can get involved in the relief efforts without bidding on the merchandise. Fans can Text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief, which helps people affected by disasters such as the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma.

All money that is raised will be donated through the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha to the American Red Cross. The final amount will be presented in a ceremony when the Storm Chasers visit the Oklahoma City RedHawks for their series beginning a week from today on May 28. The Storm Chasers players and front office are exploring additional ways to help the affected area of Moore.

Naturals Community Highlights: May 15-20

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – The Naturals return for a brief three-game homestand on Saturday, but Strike will be a busy Sasquatch over the next six days, making 11 appearances in five Northwest Arkansas communities as well as welcoming the Naturals back to town.

Wednesday, May 15: Strike will visit patients at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, lifting their spirits and generating smiles. After his visit to Circle of Life, Strike will have lunch with a special group of youngsters who were selected as part of the Terrific Kids program sponsored by the Bentonville Kiwanis club.

Thursday, May 16: Strike will have lunch with Terrific Kids selected by the Bentonville Kiwanis Club.

Friday, May 17: Strike begins his Friday by visiting students at Bright Field Middle School in Bentonville, followed by a trip to Mathias Elementary in Rogers. At both schools, Strike will congratulate students on a successful school year and promote their upcoming fundraising nights at Arvest Ballpark.

Later in the day, Strike will make an appearance with participants in a study conducted by the University of Arkansas Psychology department. Strike will close out the day by supporting runners and walkers in Bella Vista at the Strides for Stroke 5K and 1-mile fun run.

Saturday, May 18: Strike will start his Saturday morning with a visit to the Wildcat Rumble 5k in Bentonville. After passing out awards and celebrating with the winners, Strike will visit the Compassion House in Springdale. Following a brief lunch break, Strike will head over to Pinnacle Hills Mall in Rogers to take part in the rescheduled Touch-A-Truck event, benefitting the Junior League of Northwest Arkansas. Later in the day, Strike will appear the Bentonville Great Strides event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

In addition to Strike’s visits around Northwest Arkansas, the Naturals will welcome eight groups to Arvest Ballpark this homestand as part of the team’s fundraising program. These groups include Elkins Elementary School, Sugar Creek Elementary School, Lincoln Junior High School, Huntsville Intermediate School, Mathias Elementary School music department, Lowell Elementary School, Aid for Developing Countries and Western Arkansas Child Development. As of May 14, the Naturals ticket fundraising program has raised $52,543 this season.

Habitat for Humanity to Hold 50/50 Drawings at Blue Rocks Home Games

WILMINGTON, DE – The Wilmington Blue Rocks are pleased to announce that Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County will hold a 50/50 raffle at each of the remaining Blue Rocks home games during the 2013 season. Proceeds from each raffle go to benefit the Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County.

“This is a brand new concept that will be introduced to our fans, but it is something that has worked at other major league and minor league professional sports venues,” said Kevin P. Linton, director of community affairs for the Blue Rocks. “Fans will have the opportunity to participate in something that is very economical and could win them some extra money, all while supporting a great organization here in the Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County, here in Delaware.”

The 50/50 raffle will be executed by 50/50 Central, a company based out of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Fans can purchase tickets two different ways while visiting Frawley Stadium during each Blue Rocks game. Fans may purchase tickets at the 50/50 kiosk, which is located on the main concourse across from the Quarry Team Store. Additionally, people can purchase tickets throughout the game from the seats from a 50/50 vendor walking around the seating area.

Tickets can be purchased from the time gates open until the seventh inning. The 50/50 drawing will take place at the end of the seventh inning, via an electronic draw. Tickets can be purchased in the following increments: 1 for $2, 3 for $5, 10 for $10 and 40 for $20. Fans do not need to be present to win the raffle jackpot each night. Jackpots will vary depending on the sales of the tickets each game.

“We’re pleased to be working with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on this exciting fundraising endeavor,” said HFHNCC Chief Executive Officer Kevin L. Smith. We know the Blue Rocks fans and how they’ve supported various community groups throughout their 21 seasons here in Delaware and we’re looking forward to receiving their support.”

Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has been building affordable housing with low-income families since 1986. Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has built more than 200 homes in areas throughout New Castle County including the City of Wilmington, Middletown, Newark, New Castle and St. Georges. As a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, it is among the top three largest affiliates in the Northeast (of over 210 affiliates from Delaware to Maine) in terms of home construction. Through its unique approach, Habitat for Humanity helps low-income families break the cycle of poverty through the stability and empowerment gained through homeownership.

Legends invite non-profits for CON program

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends are inviting non-profit organizations to participate in their Community Organization of the Night program during the 2013 season.

The Community Organization program offers non-profits a variety of opportunities to publicize their work at Whitaker Bank Ballpark and on Legends radio broadcasts during each of the Legends’ 70 home games. Hundreds of organizations throughout central and eastern Kentucky have participated.

“The Legends place a huge emphasis on being a strong community partner,” said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. “With that in mind, it’s really the least we can do to open up our facility and allow 70 unique non-profit organizations the opportunity to spread their message and raise awareness among the thousands of Legends fans that come through our gates each year. ”

Organizations may set up a display on the concourse, where they can greet fans and distribute information. Before the game, a representative of each Community Organization of the Night is interviewed on the public address system. The representative also is a guest on the radio broadcast for a half-inning during the game. Each organization receives four complimentary tickets to their game. Solicitation is not permitted.

The Legends have added a fund-raising element to the program for 2013. To maximize exposure and to boost fund-raising, organizations that reserve their night for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday game will purchase a minimum of 50 Legends fundraiser tickets at three dollars each. Fundraiser tickets may then be sold by the organization for up to the regular face value of nine dollars.

“Each organization may keep the funds raised, which could be as much as six dollars per ticket sold,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends director of community relations and special events. “You’ll have more supporters up in the stands, and you’ll have a fun group out to enjoy a Legends game.”

Liberty Elem. student wins Hit the Books contest

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) A student at Liberty Elementary School in Lexington has won a bookmark design contest as part of the Lexington Legends/Chick-fil-A “Hit the Books” reading incentive program.

Fifth grade student Maya Chamberlain created the winning entry. She received a Legends prize pack, including Legends merchandise, a framed “Hit the Books ” poster featuring her artwork and a free membership in the 2013 Little Legends Kids Club. She also will be invited to throw a ceremonial first pitch at a designated Legends game for her school. Bookmarks featuring her artwork will be distributed to students at every school that participates in the “Hit the Books” program. More than 21,000 students from 52 central Kentucky schools are expected to take part in the program, which runs through April 1.

Samuel Jung, a second grade student at Eastern Elementary in Scott County; Grace Kim, a fourth grade student at Wilmore Elementary; Leah Olmstead, a fourth grade student at Wilmore Elementary; and Allison Steele, a fifth grade student at Stonewall Elementary in Lexington all received honorable mention for their designs. “Hit the Books has always been an important part of community outreach for the Legends,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends’ director of community relations and special events. “We enjoy visiting the schools and meeting the students who are taking part in the program. Building literacy in childhood is a great cause. We’re glad to help develop good readers as well as good Legends fans.”

In “Hit the Books,” a baseball diamond is used to record credit for a student’s reading. For every book a student reads, a teacher places his or her initials on a base. When the student has all three bases and home plate initialed by the teacher, the student may bring a “Hit the Books” bookmark to the Legends’ box office at Whitaker Bank Ballpark to exchange it for two tickets to a Legends home game designated for their school.

The school with the most bookmarks redeemed on its designated night will win a luncheon assembly provided by the Lexington Legends and Chick-fil-A.

The 2013 season is the 13th for Legends baseball, and also marks the 13th year that the Legends have been associated with “Hit the Books.” About 150,000 students have participated.

The Legends, a class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, open the home season Monday, April 8 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark against the Asheville Tourists, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. For more information, visit www.lexingtonlegends.com.

Hits for Home Invitational will benefit tornado-affected communities in Kentucky

Sixteen Kentucky high school teams to compete in the invitational with funds going to those affected by the tornadoes.

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – Whitaker Bank and the Lexington Legends will serve as hosts for the Hits for Home Invitational March 13-16.  Proceeds will go to the Salvation Army, which will then allocate funds to assist communities affected by the March 2012 tornadoes.

Sixteen Kentucky high school baseball teams, many of them representing tornado-affected areas, will participate in the eight-game event at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Legends, who are a class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

Tickets to each session (two games per day) are five dollars per person at the gates on the days of the games.  There will be no advance sale of tickets.  Raffle tickets will be available for purchase.  Winning tickets will be drawn and prizes awarded at the end of the final day of competition.

“We are super excited to be part of this event,” said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat.  “It’s a great way to give back in some small way to those communities that were devastated last year.”

The worst of the severe weather hit Kentucky on March 2, 2012, causing 24 deaths.  More than 300 people were injured, and many Kentuckians are still struggling to repair and rebuild their lives, homes and communities.

Scout Patch Design Contest Underway

Wilmington, DE – The Wilmington Blue Rocks are pleased to announce the implementation of the 2013 Scout Patch Design Contest for their Boy and Girl Scout Sleepovers in August at Frawley Stadium. The winning scout will receive a prize pack and the winning patch will be given to all scouts participating in the sleepover. Deadline for submissions is April 8, 2013.

The 2013 season marks the 14th year of the scout sleepover program with the Blue Rocks. Sleepover dates are June 28th for the Girl Scouts and August 17th for the Boy Scouts.

The Blue Rocks begin their 2013 season on April 5th in Myrtle Beach. After a six-game road trip, the Rocks return to Wilmington for the home opener on Friday, April 12 at 7:05 p.m. Group tickets and mini plans for the 2013 campaign are on sale now by visiting bluerocks.com.

Legends back BlueClaws in ‘Restore the Shore’

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends and the Lakewood BlueClaws are South Atlantic League rivals on the baseball field, but the Legends are enthusiastically supporting the New Jersey-based BlueClaws on their “Restore the Shore” campaign in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The Legends purchased “Restore the Shore” t-shirts in support of the efforts by the Blue Claws to help victims of the super storm. The campaign will continue through Memorial Day. While the BlueClaws are working closely with individuals and businesses in their area, support is welcome from anywhere. Atlantic Physical Therapy and Ergo clothing are sponsoring the campaign.

“Supporting the BlueClaws in the Restore the Shore efforts was a no-brainer,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends’ director of community relations and special events. “As a member of the South Atlantic League baseball family, we wish we were able to do more to help those affected. The hope is that our contribution to our friends in Lakewood and surrounding areas will highlight the importance of reaching out and supporting communities outside of your own, and will encourage other teams and individuals to do the same. We are grateful for the opportunity to be involved.”

Each Friday until Memorial Day, participants will wear the t-shirts, and each person will make a donation every Friday. Details are available at BlueClaws.com/Restore.

Businesses that participate will be honored in a ceremony at a 2013 BlueClaws game.

“Obviously, there were so many of our friends and neighbors impacted significantly by Hurricane Sandy,” said Dave Manzo, co-founder of Atlantic Physical Therapy Center. “Through this program, we can raise money in a fun way over the next several months.”

In early 2013, those impacted by the storm will be able to fill out an application, and donations will be made to as many families as possible.

“We have an opportunity to help many re-build after Sandy’s devastation,” said BlueClaws General Manager Geoff Brown. “We’re looking forward to helping, and we hope that there are a lot of businesses and families that can help us make an impact.”

Blue Rocks 2012 Holiday Card Contest Underway

WILMINGTON, DE – The Wilmington Blue Rocks welcome all students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade to participate in the 2012 Blue Rocks Holiday Card Contest. Entries for the 2012 Blue Rocks Holiday Card Contest are now being accepted until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28. The winning entry will be the cover of the Blue Rocks Holiday Card. The winner will receive 10 tickets to Opening Night and a baseball autographed by the whole team!

All entrants will receive two tickets to a 2013 Blue Rocks game. The winner will be announced on November 30. Each entrant will receive two (2) complimentary tickets to a game in 2013. The grand prize winner will receive a team-signed ball, 10 tickets to a game and will throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

Bees Make Donation to Make-A-Wish Foundation

Burlington-Bees-2012The Burlington Bees recently made a donation of $750 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation as part of the Midwest League’s On-Field Behavior Policy.

Each season, the Midwest League collects fines from players and coaches who violate the On-Field Behavior Policy. Then the league distributes the fine money evenly to each member team, and asks them to give it to a deserving group or organization in their community.

“The Midwest League does a great job in turning a negative thing into a positive one,” said Bees General Manager Chuck Brockett. “The Make-A-Wish Foundation is such a wonderful organization that helps children through difficult times, and we felt they were very deserving of this donation.”

Make-A-WishSince its creation in 1987, the Iowa Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 2,500 wishes to children ages 2 ½ to 18. Children who receive the wish have a life-threatening medical condition, but not always terminal. The wishes granted generally fall into four categories:
• Trips – Disney World, Hawaii, cruises, etc.
• Gifts – computers, hot tubs, room makeovers, etc.
• Occupational – be a train engineer or police officer for a day
• Meet celebrities

Revenues to pay for the wishes come from fund raising events, corporate contributions, foundation grants, individual contributions, memorials, and bequests. The average cost to complete a wish in Iowa is approximately $9,000.

The Iowa Chapter serves all 99 counties of the state, and consists of nine staff members and twelve volunteer area committees. There are currently nine dedicated Wish-Granting volunteers in the Southeast Iowa area. A Walk for Wishes fundraising event is scheduled for December 2nd at Westland Mall in West Burlington.
