Guns & Hoses Charity Softball Event Set for October 7

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (September 6, 2018) – The 11th Annual Guns & Hoses Charity Softball Game will take place at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Sunday, October 7. The event, presented by 707 Shooting Range and Goldfinch Winslow Law Firm, features a 4-team showdown between Myrtle Beach and Horry County first responders. All proceeds from the event will benefit SOS Health Care, Inc. Project Lifesaver for Horry County.

“This is a great, friendly rivalry game between the police and fire departments,” said Project Lifesaver Program Coordinator Monique Clement. “Without their support Project Lifesaver would not be possible in our area. They are our first responders, our search and rescue, and the backbone to Project Lifesaver.”

“After teaming up with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in 2017 this event drew its biggest crowd to date,” added Clement. “The Pelicans have stepped up to the plate again this year and I have no doubt it will be bigger and better than before, allowing SOS Health Care to make Project Lifesaver more successful.”

Admission to the event is a $5 donation to SOS Health Care, Inc. The event will also include a hot dog buffet while supplies last. Concessions will also be available. Additionally, spectators can participate in various games and raffles with all proceeds benefiting SOS Health Care Inc.

“We’re excited to host this event for a second straight year,” stated Pelicans General Manager Ryan Moore. “TicketReturn.Com Field is the community’s ballpark and what better way to celebrate that than by hosting a charity event headlined by our community’s first responders.”

Gates for the Guns & Hoses Charity Softball Game will open at 2 PM. The approximate schedule of play is as follows:

ABOUT PROJECT LIFESAVER: The primary mission of Project Lifesaver is to provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer’s, autism and related conditions. This is a program that uses radio telemetry to track individual transmitters on a band worn like a watch or a bracelet. The transmitter is assigned a frequency that can be used to track down the wearer should he or she leave home without the knowledge of their caregiver. Project Lifesaver currently is a partnership program between SOS Health Care and Horry County Public Safety and currently covers 32 children with autism. The cost of the band and batteries for one year is $375 per year. Project Lifesaver provides this service free of charge to the individual.

Pelicans give back to area high schools with rivalry series

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 22, 2018) – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are giving back to area high schools through their rivalry series this coming week, August 27-30. Fans can purchase tickets online through MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/rivals. A portion of the proceeds from tickets purchased through this link will be donated to the school of their choice.

On Monday, the battle will be between Georgetown and Waccamaw High Schools. Carolina Forest and Conway collide on Tuesday while Wednesday features Socastee versus St. James. The Pelicans’ home slate concludes on Thursday with the Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach rivalry.

As part of Grand Strand Rivals Week courtesy of Angelo’s Steak and Pasta, each game will feature between-inning match-ups between the schools. All game times are 7:05 p.m. against the Buies Creek Astros. Gates will open at 6 p.m.

Pelicans host fundraiser for Windsor Green victims

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (April 25, 2018) – In the wake of the fire at Windsor Green Apartments in Carolina Forest earlier this month, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans are raising funds for the displaced residents. The team is holding a ticket sales fundraiser in which fans can purchase a ticket to May 1 and 2 online at myrtlebeachpelicans.com/tickets using the promo code “WG”. $5.00 from every ticket purchased with that promo code will be donated to those affected by the fire. The team will also donate proceeds from the 50/50 raffle on those nights. Additionally, anyone wishing to make a donation to the affected residents can do so at the ballpark that evening.   Donations are being accepted in the form of cash, gift cards and toiletries. It has been asked that no clothes be donated.

In addition to the fundraising elements, the team is offering a free ticket and meal to those affected by this tragedy on Tuesday, May 1, and Wednesday, May 2. To claim the free ticket and meal voucher, displaced residents simply need to stop by the Pelicans Box Office.

Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on both nights. Other promotional offers include $2 tacos and tallboys until 8pm on Tuesday, and BOGO hot dogs on Wednesday. TicketReturn.Com Field hosts March for Babies

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (April 2, 2018) – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will host the March of Dimes’ March for Babies beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

March for Babies is a walking event that brings together individuals, families, friends and corporate teams to raise money to help the March of Dimes lead the fight for the health of all moms and babies.

Registration for the event starts at 8:30 a.m. at Gate 1 (down the right field line) at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The three-mile walk circumvents both the ballpark and Broadway at the Beach, with other festivities set to take place at TicketReturn.Com Field.

The March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies, working in support of moms at every stage from preconception to post-delivery by funding research, programs and education. Money raised from the organization’s March for Babies will be a lifeline for the nearly four million babies born in the United States each year.

Pelicans to host Horry County Special Olympics Spring Games on April 18

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 28, 2018) – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will host the Horry County Special Olympics Spring Games on Wednesday, April 18, at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Approximately 400 Special Olympic athletes from across Horry County will be joined with 400 “buddies” and volunteers to compete in various events. Athletes may also earn the opportunity to enter South Carolina’s Summer Games, held from May 11-13 in Columbia.

“The Special Olympics Spring Games gives athletes all over Horry with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete, receive medals and celebrate the bravery they have to be successful at anything,” said Horry County Special Olympics Area Director Erik Karney. “They show us every day that they are the true “heroes” in life, with their smiles of joy and determination to be the best they can be.”

Gates open to the ballpark at 8:30 a.m., and registration for all athletes and buddies will be at Gate 1, located near right field. Volunteers will register at Gate 2, down the first base line. The Horry County community is encouraged to join the Pelicans’ pep rally to welcome the athletes into the ballpark. The Games are open to the public at no charge, and all community members are welcome to cheer on the athletes and lend their support.

The day begins with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run at Myrtle Beach’s Fire Training Facility at 8:45 a.m. The torch will be lit on the field at 9:45 a.m., marking the third year the Games are being held at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Events begin at 10:00 a.m., with athletes competing in the softball and tennis throws on the outfield grass, the 100m and 50m runs and walks on the outfield warning track and the young athletes’ events in foul territory down the left field line.

Members of the Special Olympics Youth Athletes (ages 2-7) will also take part in the festivities at the ballpark. Entertainment throughout the day, which concludes at 1:30 p.m., includes Olympic Town with a DJ, inflatables and local mascots.

In addition to the Horry County Spring Games, the Pelicans will also hold their annual Special Olympics Night on Saturday, April 21. The Birds will sport commemorative jerseys designed by Angelita Ponce of North Myrtle Beach Middle School. Ponce won the club’s jersey design contest, with students from both North Myrtle Beach Middle School and Ocean Bay Middle School submitting drafts. The jerseys will be auctioned off to fans throughout the 6:05 p.m. game, with the proceeds benefitting the Horry County Special Olympics. Gates open at 5 p.m. on Special Olympics Night.

Military Appreciation Night Returns on May 13th

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 3, 2017) – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will host their fourth annual Military Appreciation Night at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The evening features a military card set giveaway of 36 local veterans to the first 1,000 fans, presented by Embrace Hospice, distinctive military-inspired jerseys for the Pelicans and more.

In addition to the military card set giveaway courtesy of Embrace Hospice, the Pelicans will hold a special pregame ceremony to honor the 36 veterans featured in this year’s set. Throughout the game veterans and active military personnel will also be recognized. All veterans or active military members can obtain a free ticket to this contest with their military ID and their families can purchase tickets for just $10 courtesy of Steak and Shake.

The Pelicans will wear military-inspired jerseys in their game against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Forty-one jerseys will be raffled off to veterans and active military in attendance. Both veterans and current military personnel can show their ID at the jersey table on the first base concourse to receive a free raffle ticket to win a jersey. During the seventh inning, raffle winners will be announced, and the winning military members will be invited on the field postgame for a special meet-and-greet with Pelicans players and the club’s coaching staff. These game-worn jerseys are available to veterans and active military personnel through generous donations by friends and family of Embrace Hospice.

Military Appreciation Night is in conjunction with the city of Myrtle Beach’s Military Appreciation Days and is also a Locals Appreciation Night, meaning each fan with a local ID receives $3.00 off their ticket price courtesy of Sparks Toyota and WMBF News. Additionally, one local fan will have a chance to win up to $50,000 in the postgame Dice Roll Extravaganza courtesy of Sparks Toyota & HTC. The night will be capped with a Postgame Fireworks Extravaganza presented by East Coast Pyrotechnics Fireworks.

Pelicans announce Military Appreciation Day

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (APRIL 30, 2015) – In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, are pleased to announce Military Appreciation Day. The event, presented by Embrace Hospice, Hot Talk 99.5 FM, and Wave 104.1 FM, will take place on May 14 when the Pelicans host the Carolina Mudcats for a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Gates to the ballpark will open at 5:30 p.m. ET to accommodate fans for the numerous pregame festivities.

Pelicans players will wear custom-made camouflage jerseys for the game. The jerseys, reflecting the familiar design of military uniforms from the Vietnam War era, will be auctioned during the game. Proceeds from the auction will benefit Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc., Chapter 925.

The first 1,000 fans through the gates will also receive a card set featuring the photos and stories of 36 Grand Strand veterans and active military personnel. The uniformed men and women from those cards will be represented that night, either by being in attendance themselves, or by members of their family.

The night will also have pre-game festivities aplenty. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc., Chapter 925 will hand out 5,000 miniature American flags to fans at the gates and will also honor the Pelicans franchise as a Purple Heart supporter team. There will be a pre-game colors dedication, as well as a ceremony held around the Missing Man Table. The veterans being honored on the card set will be introduced individually before the first pitch, and to wrap up the pre-game ceremonies, a paratrooper will parachute into TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark while holding an American flag.

Embrace Hospice joined the Pelicans as a partner in 2014 with “Embrace a Veteran,” one of the most popular programs from that season, in which veterans were asked to stand up at every home game and be recognized. Saturdays became Embrace Veterans Saturdays, where select Grand Strand veterans were highlighted and honored, and their stories were told in person and on the video board. A veteran and Embrace Hospice employee threw out a first pitch at these games as well.

Katelyn Guild, Pelicans Director of Business Development, pursued the expansion of Military Appreciation events after a positive reception last season.

“The game of baseball has incredible roots connected with the U.S. military, and we are thrilled whenever we can grow and diversify the way that we honor our veterans-especially our local ones,” Guild said. “Embrace Hospice agrees, and they were excited to partner with us on this as well.”

For Embrace Hospice, the cause is an important one, but also a personal one.

“Many of us are veterans ourselves, so this has an extra special meaning to us and the many veterans we employ,” said Kevin McHugh, CEO of Embrace Hospice. “Our veterans are one of this country’s greatest accomplishments. What they have done for our freedom makes going to a ballgame an everyday thing for Americans. We hope the community joins us once again this year at Pelicans ballgames to say thank you and to ‘Embrace a Veteran’.”

In addition to the card set and year-long program, the Pelicans have dedicated an empty seat at the ballpark, located near the Clark and Addison Grille and Hops Heaven. The seats remains unoccupied in honor of lost prisoners of war (POW) and service members who are pronounced missing in action (MIA).

Information on Embrace Hospice will be available on the main concourse at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark for each Embrace Saturday all year long. The dates for the remaining Embrace Veterans Saturdays in 2015 are as follows: May 23; June 6, 13, 20; July 11, 25; August 8, 15, 29.

TD Bank and Sparks Toyota team up for Community Corner program

Two companies to donate nearly 2,000 tickets to non-profits

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (APRIL 6, 2015) – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, are pleased to announce that TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank, will return as a partner in the Pelicans TD Bank Community Corner program for the 2015 regular season. Joining TD Bank this season is Sparks Toyota. The two organizations will provide approximately 1,750 tickets to local non-profit organizations in Horry and Georgetown counties.

The Community Corner program enters its fifth season, and this year, tickets will be provided for all 70 Pelicans home games. Each night, a non-profit organization will receive 25 tickets as part of the expanded program.

The groups will enjoy a unique night out at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark with tickets in the reserved box seating area. The group will have the name of their organization appear on the video board during the game as well.

“Every year it is such a pleasure to work with an organization that cares so much for its community,” said Scott Sharp, Regional Vice President, TD Bank. “The Community Corner Program is dedicated to giving back and providing a wonderful opportunity for its residents and we are thrilled to support such meaningful efforts.”

Law Enforcement Torch Run aiming for growth in year three of partnership with Pelicans

Myrtle-Beach-PelicansThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, will host the third annual Special Olympics Night in conjunction with Superhero Night as part of “Geekend” on Saturday, April 25 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. This season, the Pelicans will wear unique superhero-themed uniforms that will be auctioned off to benefit the Special Olympics as well.

This marks the second time that Special Olympics Night will overlap with Superhero Night, although it is the first time that the Pelicans will wear superhero-themed series on this night. “The superhero theme is a natural fit for Special Olympics Night,” remarked Pelicans Senior Director of Community Jen Borowski. “All the Special Olympics athletes are superheroes in my eyes.”

Special-OlympicsFans who wish to donate to the Special Olympics at the game will be able to do so at the Special Olympics table in the concourse or at the Guest Services booth. Proceeds from the jersey auction and 50/50 raffle will also benefit the Special Olympics.

Those that wish to bid on jerseys will be able to do so whether in attendance or not, as select jerseys will be available for bidding online. The game-worn jerseys will be autographed by the corresponding player or coach immediately following the game, and fans at the game will have the opportunity to take a photo with the player or coach as well.

Over the past two seasons, the Pelicans and the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) have helped raise over $23,000 for the Special Olympics of South Carolina through the proceeds from this event.

“This is a real passion for many of us here locally in law enforcement,” remarked Lance Corporal Felix Cruz, who is part of the LETR, which runs a handful of events in the area to raise money for Special Olympics. “We want to get as many people out there to the game as possible to help raise money for the Special Olympics. The money allows athletes locally, regionally, and nationally to train and compete in Special Olympics events, and without the financial support, many of the Special Olympics athletes would not be able to do so.”

In addition to raising money for the Special Olympics, the night also serves as a platform to highlight the Special Olympics athletes. The athletes will take part in a pre-game parade on the field, participate in a variety of on-field games and in-park promotions, and take the field with the Pelicans players at the start of the game.

Pelicans players and coaches will also hold a private meet-and-greet and autograph session with the Special Olympics athletes prior to first pitch.

The LETR runs a number of events in Horry county to help raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics, including: Teacher on the Roof, Capture the Flag Tournament, Dip, Duck and Dive Dodgeball Tournament, Tip the Waiter, St. James Got Talent, a Fashion Show at St. James, and Krispy Kreme Cops on Doughnut Shop. The Pelicans help the LETR support a number of these programs and recognize Special Olympics athletes outside of Special Olympics Night as well, including an on-field ceremony during the 2014 Carolina League postseason, in which athletes participating in the 2014 Special Olympics USA games were recognized prior to the Pelicans game.

Myrtle Beach Herald Readers’ Choice Award goes to Pelicans

Pelicans named “Best Family Attraction” by readers

­­­­MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (FEBRUARY 27, 2015) – The Myrtle Beach Herald released its “Readers’ Choice Awards” on Friday, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, were named “Best Family Attraction.”

The award is one of many that the Pelicans have garnered over the past year. The Carolina League awarded the Pelicans the “Complete Franchise Award from the Carolina League” along with the “Marketing and Promotional Award;” the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce gave the Pelicans the “Community Service Award;” Ballpark Digest gave the Pelicans the “Promotion of the Year” award; and the Grand Strand Happening named the Pelicans “Best Family Outing.”

Stadium Journey Magazine also continued to recognize the Pelicans ballpark experience, giving it top honors in the Carolina League, a fourth-place spot in Minor League Baseball, and number 32 ranking in all of sports in their most recent rankings.

This is the first year that the Pelicans have won the Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Family Attraction.”

The Readers’ Choice Awards is an annual poll that was open to readers of the Myrtle Beach Herald using a new online voting system that helped create the largest number of voting entries in the newspaper’s history.

The Pelicans were one of twenty award winners in the “Entertainment” category. Other categories include: Auto; Beauty and Wellness; Food and Drink; Health and Medical; Home and Garden; Pets; Professional Services; Real Estate; Recreation, Leisure & Sports; and Shopping.

Grand Strand Happening name Pelicans “Best Family Outing”

Myrtle-Beach-PelicansGrand Strand Happening announced the winners of their “Happening List,” and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans were named the “Best Family Outing” in the first ever incarnation of the award.

The Happening List is a people’s choice award list of Grand Strand Happening readers’ favorite people, places, events, and businesses on the Grand Strand. The publication handed out over 100 different awards from “Best Day Spa,” to “Best Sushi,” and “Best Senior Living.” The Pelicans beat out fellow finalists Brookgreen Gardens and Ripley’s Aquarium for the Best Family Outing label.

All of the winners will be honored at the first Grand Strand Happening List Bash on September 25.

Ege wins second annual Bruce Dal Canton Service Award

Myrtle-Beach-PelicansThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, are pleased to announce that left-hander reliever Cody Ege was named the second-ever recipient of the Bruce Dal Canton Service Award for his efforts in the community this season. He was given the award before the Pelicans regular season finale on Monday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Catcher Pat Cantwell won the award in 2013.

The award is presented to a player that has demonstrated significant contributions to the Grand Strand community, the Carolina League and the baseball industry as a whole. Cody showed an ongoing commitment to charitable service throughout the season with his involvement in the Pelicans 3-Day Youth Clinic as well as school and summer camp appearances, just to name a few.

“Cody has been an excellent influence on all of the young children that he has worked with this season,” explained Pelicans Senior Director of Marketing Jen Borowski. She went on to add, “most importantly, from our end, he has helped us with every activity that we have asked of him and done it with a smile on his face. I am sure that, if the award was not involved, he still would have been willing to help out; that’s the kind of personality he has-always willing to help out, and he’s a great community leader.”

This award is named after the late Bruce Dal Canton. Bruce Dal Canton was the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Pitching Coach from the inaugural season in 1999 until his passing in 2008. Before joining the Pelicans, Dal Canton was a Major League pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox. He coached for 26 years, including ten with the Pelicans, until he prematurely passed away due to esophageal cancer on October 7, 2008. Dal Canton was heavy involved in charitable endeavors and constantly striving to make the community a better place to live, work and play. In 2009, the Pelicans named the home clubhouse after him and retired his number 43, one of just two past Pelicans retired numbers.

Ege was not alone. The Pelicans players and coaches donated countless man-hours in the community with events like the Home Run for Autism Camp, a day with Grand Strand Miracle Leagues, the 3-Day Youth Clinic, the Sanofi Healthy Living outings to two local YMCAs and the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand, as well as food packing initiatives with the Lowcountry Food Bank and the Help4Kids’ Backpack Buddies program.

On a nightly basis, Pelicans players volunteered time before the games to sign autographs to fans behind home plate and caught ceremonial first pitches prior to each Pelicans home game. The Pelicans front office is grateful for all their hard work. Although Ege’s accomplishment is an individual award, the impact that the 2014 Pelicans achieved in the community mirrored the tremendous success of the group on the diamond.

On the field, Ege sported 3.88 ERA and a 4-1 record in 37 outings out of the bullpen for the Pelicans during the regular season. He punched out 76 batters and walked just 17 and had a 46-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio during the second half. He did not allow a run in 10 1/3 August innings.

Weekend Proves Successful for Charities at Pelicans Ballpark

Myrtle-Beach-PelicansThe reason behind Vice President & General Manager Andy Milovich’s in-game prostate exam on July 24 came full circle this past Saturday with Coaches vs. Cancer Night. Milovich agreed to the exam if the team could raise Fierce Fallon’s Facebook Page to 10,000 ‘Likes’. Saturday night acted as a fundraiser for Fierce Fallon and featured a mini-football giveaway, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and more with all proceeds benefiting Fallon. All-in-all the night raised over $6,500. The highlight of the night however, came before the anthem was even sung.

Coaches-vs-CancerFallon made her grand entrance to the ballpark with family and friends in the back of a pick-up truck as her favorite song, Katy Perry’s Roar, boomed throughout the stadium. Once arriving to the home dugout she made her way to the pitcher’s mound for a ceremonial first pitch. Moments later, after player introductions, Pelicans starter Chad Bell took his place on the mound and prepared to face the first hitter of the night, Fierce Fallon. One pitch from Bell was all it took as her baseball debut went down in the books as a solo home run and one of the most memorable knocks at TicketReturn.Com Field. She took her victory lap around the bases to a standing ovation and roaring crowd.

“She is such a fighter and has inspired so many people over the past ten months,” stated Milovich. “The fact that we had the opportunity to not only help raise money but provide her with a memorable night is very special to me and our entire staff.”

The Saturday night post on Fallon’s page included a video of her home run with the comment, “Fallon had the most amaz-wing time tonight at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans game. Here she is hitting a HOME RUN at her first ever at bat! Thank you to everyone that made this possible!!!” Fallon also told her mother that “It was the best day of my life.”

Mary-Kay-Foundation-logo150Saturday was only the start of the Pelicans’ charitable efforts this past weekend. Sunday was Pink in the Park with a focus on breast cancer awareness. The night featured a mini-base giveaway with the words “Save 2nd Base” to the first 1,000 ladies. Additional highlights included a silent auction with pink bats and bases. All proceeds from the auction, 50/50 raffle sales and more benefited the Mary Kay Foundation. That number exceeded $4,000.

Sunday also marked the end of the Pelicans Strike Out Cancer Series. The series featured one night each month, April through August, and highlighted five different forms of cancer (esophageal, skin, testicular, prostate and breast). On each night the team dawned special jerseys which have been up for auction all season at myrtlbeachpelicans.com. The auction concludes next Friday, August 15th at 5:00 PM. The auction includes jerseys worn by Joey Gallo, Jorge Alfaro, Manager Joe Mikulik and more.

Myrtle-Beach-PelicansThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, won the series finale with the Frederick Keys 5-4 on Thursday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Pelicans Vice President and General Manager Andy Milovich sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” while receiving a prostate exam during the seventh inning stretch in front of a sellout crowd of 6,599 to raise awareness of the need for annual prostate exams.

The Pelicans (18-17, 62-41) struck first in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Chris Garia singled and advanced to second on a Nick Williams walk. In the next at-bat, Royce Bolinger scored Garia with an RBI single to center field. Pelicans led 1-0 after the first.

In the bottom of the fourth the Birds increased their lead to 2-0. After Edwin Garcia grounded out, Christopher Bostick singled to center field. With two outs, Luis Mendez drove a double to center field, allowing Bostick to score from first. Mendez was thrown out trying to advance to third on the hit by right fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang to end the inning.

The Keys (16-17, 48-52) scored two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game. After Joel Hutter walked and Tucker Nathans doubled to begin the inning, Johnny Ruettiger scored Hutter and advanced Nathans to third base with an RBI fielder’s choice. Two batters later, Trey Mancini hit an infield single to the shortstop, scoring Nathans. Pelicans starter Luis Parra walked Chiang to put runners on first and second with two outs, but escaped the inning when Chiang was thrown out in the ensuing play. Jason Esposito singled on a line drive to left field, but Chiang was caught in between second and third base when Garia’s throw came to Mendez, who ran and tagged Chiang trying to retreat back to second.

Frederick took the lead in the sixth inning. With two outs, and Wynston Sawyer and Nathans on base, Ruettiger lined a triple down the right field line, scoring Sawyer and Nathans to give the Keys a 4-2 lead.

Myrtle Beach answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI infield single by Mendez.

In the bottom of the seventh the Pelicans took the lead for good, scoring all of their runs with two outs. After Garia and Williams flew out, Bolinger and Preston Beck walked to put runners on first and second. In the next at-bat, Garcia slammed a 1-0 pitch off the left field wall, scoring Bolinger and Beck. The Pelicans took a 5-4 lead.

After pitching a scoreless eighth, Pelicans reliever Abel De Los Santos (8) came back out for the ninth to complete the two-inning save.

Cody Ege (4-1) allowed the go-ahead runs in the sixth but earned the win in relief. Keys reliever Jimmy Yacabonis (0-3) took the loss, allowing the go-ahead double from Garcia in the seventh.

Andy Milovich passed his prostate exam with no problems.
