8th Annual ‘4 in 24’ Field Renovations to take place April 11

TROY, NY – The Tri-City ValleyCats and their field renovation teammates, BlueShield of Northeastern New York and Hannaford Supermarkets, are set to renovate four more youth ballfields in 2018. The 8th Annual ‘4 in 24’ Field Renovation Project will take place on Wednesday, April 11, where each of the chosen fields will undergo a necessary overhaul.

The four leagues to receive the work will be American Little League in Albany, Cairo-Durham Little League, Scotia-Glenville Girls Softball, and Round Lake Malta Youth Baseball.

Each baseball field will have their old infield grass replaced with brand new sod, their pitcher’s mound and home plate areas completely rebuilt, the infield surface leveled, graded and raked, the baselines measured and cut to the correct specifications, and all new bases, a pitching rubber and home plate installed. The softball field will receive the same scope of work, but without grass on the infield.

“When we first embarked on this ambitious project in 2011, we felt that it would have an enormous positive impact on many youth ballplayers within the Capital Region,” said ValleyCats General Manager Matt Callahan. “Now in its eighth year, and 30 plus leagues later, the need and project scope continues to grow exponentially. We are incredibly thankful to BlueShield of Northeastern New York and Hannaford Supermarkets who have been instrumental in keeping the program going strong.”

Both longtime supporters of this important community initiative, BlueShield of Northeastern New York and Hannaford Supermarkets have aided in supplying the necessary resources and volunteer commitment to complete these renovations.

“Active kids make for healthy communities, which is why youth sports are so important. Hannaford is pleased to once again partner with the Tri-City ValleyCats to provide young people with wonderfully improved facilities for healthy play and growth,” said Hannaford Supermarkets Community Relations Specialist Brian Fabre. “We look forward to seeing kids throughout the greater Capital Region rush the field this spring as they learn the values of teamwork and dedication.”

Work on each field will commence at daybreak on April 11 and will continue through the night if necessary. The efforts will also be assisted by Profile Products and Turface Athletics, who are contributing some of the necessary equipment and materials. Additional support comes from ‘Cats Care, the ValleyCats’ arm of the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation.


2018 ‘4 in 24’ Youth League Snapshots

American Little League
Urban youth league serving approximately 200 children ages 4 to 12 playing at all Little League levels. The field is in much need of repair, and these renovations will make it a safer surface to play on.

League Statement:
“The Albany American Little League would like to thank the Tri-City ValleyCats and their partners for their timeless efforts, support, and commitment to Little League Baseball. The renovation of our field will help our players develop into young athletes, provide our youth a safe and structured environment where they can grow to become productive caring members of our communities. The work that the ValleyCats will do for our field will add value to the community and place smiles on the faces of our little leaguers.”

Cairo-Durham Little League
10 teams serving multiple towns, approximately 150 children ages 4-12. The mound, home plate, and baselines all need significant work.

League Statement:
“During the past several years, little league participation has been falling, which has affected our ability to help afford all things needed to improve the conditions for the kids. Last year we focused on getting our kids all new catching equipment and renovating our girls softball field (all new dirt, excavation and a new drainage system). This year is on new bats and our main field really needs attention. Your help with our field will help improve the main baseball field, not just cosmetically but in functionality as well. This huge gift will allow us to focus on buying a machine to pull our rascal in order to maintain the 5 fields we play on.

It truly is an honor and a gift to be chosen and I am beyond grateful for your generosity. Look forward to seeing this all come together. Thank you again!”

Scotia-Glenville Girls Softball
The league serves over 100 girls ages 4-18, with approximately nine teams. The application was submitted by two girls that play in the league, as part of an initiative to earn a Silver Award through their Girl Scout Troop. The field is overgrown with weeds in portions, home plate is missing, and the pitcher’s mound is not in the correct location.

League Statement:

“On behalf of Scotia Glenville Girls Softball League, our board of directors and our girls, we would like to thank the Tri-City ValleyCats organization as well as their sponsors, BlueShield of Northeastern New York and Hannaford for awarding us the 4 in 24 field renovation for 2018. As a small community and league, we rely on volunteers for all field maintenance and fundraising. We appreciate the ValleyCats commitment to our local communities and the betterment of our area youth sports programs. Our secondary field was in dire need of renovation. Fixing this field will ensure that all of our girls share the same great, and more importantly safe, softball experience!”

Round Lake Malta Youth Baseball
Round Lake Malta Youth Baseball serves approximately 140 players ages 5-10 across 12 teams. Portions of the infield are overgrown with weeds, and the mound and home plate areas need significant work.

ABOUT THE ‘4 IN 24’ FIELD RENOVATION PROJECT
The ‘4 in 24’ Field Renovation Project is a collaborative effort between the ValleyCats, BlueShield of Northeastern New York and Hannaford Supermarkets that takes place each April. In less than 24 hours, four youth ball fields receive a complete infield overhaul. The project’s mission is to assist local youth leagues with the maintenance and upkeep of their playing fields, allowing for a safe place for children to learn and play ball. Following the 2018 ‘4 in 24’ project, over 30 fields will have been revamped, impacting thousands of local youth ballplayers.

Scrappers Host Youth Baseball Camp & One Day Hitting & Pitching Clinics

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are excited to announce that they have partnered with Vlad Pediatircs to host a three-day Youth Baseball Camp July 24-26.

The Scrappers Youth Camp provides kids ages 8-13 a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from some of the very best players in Minor League Baseball. All exercises and instruction will be taught by Scrappers players and coaching staff, and will focus on baseball fundamentals, sportsmanship and healthy competition. Boys and girls of all ability levels are encouraged to participate and learn from Scrappers players and coaches in a small group setting.

Camp registration includes instruction each day from 9 am until 12 pm, a ticket to the Thursday, July 26th Scrappers game vs. the Brooklyn Cyclones, on field recognition prior to the July 26th game, a camp t-shirt, and lunch following the final day of camp. To ensure your child receives individualized attention, the Youth Baseball Camp has been limited to 100 campers and early registration is highly encouraged. The Scrappers Youth Baseball Camp is $100 per child.

Additionally, the Scrappers will host a one-day hitting and pitching clinic for teen’s ages 13 to 17 years old. The Hitting Clinic will be held on Saturday, July 7 fro 9am-12pm. The Pitching Clinic will be held on Saturday, July 14. Both clincs will be taught by Scrappers players and are $60 per clinic.

Brock Holt, Spinners to Run Baseball Camp

The Lowell Spinners, short season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are proud to announce a new collaboration with All-Star utility man Brock Holt on a new baseball camp experience for 2018.

“Brock Holt Camp with the Lowell Spinners” will be hosted at LeLacheur Park from Tuesday July 24 through Friday July 27. The camp includes instruction from Spinners players and coaches as well as an appearance from Brock Holt in which he will host a Q&A session and each camper will receive autographed memorabilia from Holt.

“We can’t wait for the kids to able learn from Red Sox personnel and to spend time with Brock, who is one of the most fundamentally sound players in the league.” said Spinners General Manager Shawn Smith. “This will be a unique new experience for our fans and their families and who better to learn from than a guy who plays all over the field at Fenway Park!”

In addition, campers will be provided with lunch, a customized Spinners jersey, and four tickets to the game on Friday, July 27th as the Spinners host the State College Spikes, affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. During the day, campers will participate in drills highlighting basic fundamentals while receiving instruction from professional baseball players, some of whom will one day be playing in the majors. Camp runs Tuesday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and is available for both boys and girls ages 6-13.

Auburn Doubledays to Partner with Salvation Army this Holiday Season

Doubledays School Supply Drive to Help Local Kids “Backpack for Success!”

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are excited to announce their partnership with the Salvation Army of Auburn during the holiday season and beyond. The Doubledays staff will participate in delivering dinners to the community the morning of Thanksgiving as a part of their #52forU community service initiative.

“The Salvation Army has been a part of the Auburn community for generations and it’s up to us as a community to pitch in for those in need,” Doubledays general manager Adam Winslow said. “In this season of giving, we are proud to partner with the Salvation Army to help our neighbors in the community.”

In the spirit of the season of giving the Doubledays are also collecting food and toy items for the Holiday season. The Salvation Army is looking for non-perishable food items that can be distributed to those in need. “Volunteering is vital for our progress, and we are very pleased the Auburn Doubledays have committed to us this holiday season,” said Major Campbell of the Salvation Army

You can help the Salvation Army, the Auburn Doubledays, and your community by bringing non-perishable food items and donated toys to the Salvation Army headquarters at 18 E. Genesee St. or the Doubledays office at 130 N. Division Street in Auburn during regular business hours Monday through Friday 9am-5pm starting the week of November 28th.

The Auburn Doubledays are also pleased to announce a new initiative that will take place at the ballpark in conjunction with the Salvation Army called “Backpacks for Success!” Every Sunday game during the 2018 season we will be accepting donations of school supplies and backpacks that will be donated to local school districts. As an added bonus, any individuals that bring a backpack with school supplies to be donated will receive a complimentary ticket to that Sunday game.

“Backpacks for Success! is a phenomenal way for the Doubledays to continue their support for the local Salvation Army and our community throughout the summer,” Winslow stated. “As a community organization, it is our privilege to assist and support our children in this way, by investing in their future. In my opinion this is a great cause, and doing the right thing is the right thing to do.” Major Campbell echoed that sentiment, “Backpacks and supplies are sorely needed for our children today. Children who are ill-equipped for school don’t perform as well academically, and often feel sad and embarrassed about their situation. We feel honored to be able to help in this way”

Doubledays announce new community campaign, #52forU

The Auburn Doubledays, Short Season Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are pleased to announce a new campaign called #52forU this offseason. #52forU is a program that is designed to help individuals and families throughout our community and beyond, by giving back time and resources to the community. The Doubledays staff will be attending events, providing help, and giving back every week for 52 weeks. The program will also be included in the 2018 season in the stadium and around the community.

“We are blessed to be part of an organization that has the ability to make a difference in the community.” said Adam Winslow, General Manager of the Auburn Doubledays. “We have the ability to be a catalyst for change and positivity in our community and we need to take advantage of that position.

CT Tigers To Honor Veterans Day With Special Offer

Lake Monsters Free Family Fun Fest November 18th

The Vermont Lake Monsters will be hosting their fifth annual FREE Family Fun Fest on Saturday, November 18th from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction.

Join CHAMP and the Lake Monsters for a morning of FREE fun and activities that will feature:

  • A special appearance by everyone’s favorite mascot, CHAMP, who will be on hand to take pictures, and sign autographs
  • Fan-favorite inflatable games including the speed pitch and obstacle courses
  • CHAMP coloring and activity stations
  • Free hot dogs for fans in attendance, while supplies last, courtesy of McKenzie Country Classics & Freihofer’s
  •  A wide variety of snakes, lizards and other reptiles to see, hold and take pictures with, thanks to 802 Reptiles
  • Raffles with lots of great prizes to be given away

Cutters Accepting Applications for Hot Stove Dinner Charity

The Williamsport Crosscutters are now accepting applications from area non-profits for the 12th Annual Hot Stove Dinner & Auction with the Phillies to take place in January.

The event features guests from the Philadelphia Phillies along with other local sports celebrities.

A portion of the proceeds from the evening are donated to a local non-profit each year.

“This is our favorite event of the off season,” stated Gabe Sinicropi the team’s Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations. “We look forward to another night of fun with the Phillies and the opportunity to raise needed funding for a local charity.”

Safe & Seen trick-or-treat set for October 29

October 17, 2017

The State College Spikes are once again partnering with Centre LifeLink EMS to give fans a chance at free family fun for the Halloween season with Safe & Seen at the Ballpark presented by State College Community Land Trust. The family trick-or-treating event is scheduled for Sunday, October 29 from 3-5 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Safe & Seen will feature the opportunity for families to bring their young trick-or-treaters to the ballpark in costume for a safe Halloween event that will include many fun activities for fans of all ages. Admission and parking are free.

Youngsters can also bring a bag or bucket to be filled by area organizations stationed throughout the ballpark as they go “door-to-door” to collect treats and other fun items.

Penn State Health will also be on hand to give a mini-pumpkin from Shuey’s Market in State College to each youngster, as well as a decorating kit. Plus, fans young and old can experience ambulance tours, fall crafts, kids games, Spikes mascot meet-and-greets, and more.

Staten Island Yankees General Manager Jane Rogers Earns League Community Award

STATEN ISLAND- Staten Island Yankees General Manager Jane Rogers has been selected by the New York-Penn League as the recipient of the 2017 Bob Julian Community & Baseball Service Award. The award is given annually to the individual that has made outstanding service contributions to their community and to baseball.

As a key part of Staten Island’s operation, Jane has distinguished herself through her hard work and magnetic personality and is known by many as a person who you can count on to get things done. In the first six years of her tenure with the team, Jane progressed from Office Manager to Assistant General Manager to Executive Vice President to her current position of General Manager. Along with being a main-stay in community relations, she is also the team’s liaison to the New York Yankees working closely with player development.

Throughout the years, Jane has been recognized for her work all across Staten Island and has earned the following recognitions: Business Leader Award from Boy Scouts of America, Wounded Warrior Community Award, Todt Hill Iron Hills Community Leader Award, Community Leadership Award from Emma’s Place, Goethals Bridge Award from SIEDC, Women of Influence Award from SIEDC, Influential Woman Business Leadership Award, and NYPL Female Executive of the Year (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008). Jane also sits on the following boards: MiLB Baseball Chapel Advisory Board, Eger Nursing Home Advisory Board, SIEDC Business Council, and Staten Island Chamber of Commerce.

Jane resides in Tottenville with her husband of 38 years, Mike Rogers. Jane and Mike are the proud parents of Julie and Matthew and have two grandchildren, Vincent and Daniella.

SI Yankees honor Eric Rosen and Hungerford School for HOPE Week

STATEN ISLAND- Introduced in 2009 and heading into its ninth year in 2017, the New York Yankees’ HOPE Week initiative (Helping Others Persevere & Excel) is rooted in the fundamental belief that acts of goodwill provide hope and encouragement to more than just the recipient of the gesture. The Staten Island Yankees adopted the parent club’s initiative in 2011 and carry the tradition into 2017 for a seventh season. Beginning on Thursday, Aug. 31, Staten Island Yankees players, front office staff and Scooter the Holy Cow will recognize the efforts of an outstanding individual in the community as well as showing support to groups around us in need. Below is the schedule of events for the Staten Island Yankees HOPE Week:

Thursday, Aug. 31: Eric Rosen is an honorary Staten Island Yankee for a day.

Eric Rosen was diagnosed with autism as a child, but with the help of his mother Ilene, he never let that slow him down. Now at the age of 32, Eric is graduate of St. John’s University, has two shows on Community Television, “The Blitz Zone” and “Eric’s View”, works at Eden II Programs, and serves as a role model for those learning to live with autism. Eric will join the Baby Bombers for their doubleheader against the Connecticut Tigers as an honorary Staten Island Yankee for a day. See below for Eric’s bio.

Friday, Sept. 1: Richard H. Hungerford School takes a trot around the bases for Home Run for Life.

The Hungerford School for students with special needs helps students develop to their maximum potential and functional levels by providing them with essential social, emotional, language, technological and academic skills. As part of a long-standing relationship with the Hungerford School and the Staten Island Yankees, students come to the ballpark several times a week throughout the year to assist with mailings, stadium clean-up and other miscellaneous tasks. During the Staten Island Yankees game against the Connecticut Tigers, the Baby Bombers will recognize the students with an in-game Home Run for Life.

Born on August 16, 1985, Eric Rosen appeared as healthy and as normal a child as any other. Unbeknownst to both his doctors and parents, he was not. As with most children born within the autism spectrum, Eric displayed normal cognitive functions until about his second year, when he began to slowly withdraw and shut himself away from his family and the world. Once he was diagnosed, his parents, most notably his mother, Ilene, went to work immediately to find everything available to help her son. At that time, resources were even less accessible than they are today, but if it existed, Ilene would find it and make sure that Eric would make good use of it. She was determined to help her son overcome this baffling and life changing disorder. As his parents soon found out, autism has just as much a profound effect on the families of those afflicted as it does on the person who is diagnosed.

Eric was enrolled at the Volunteers of America – Early Learning Center in Tottenville at the age of three. With the dedicated help of the entire staff, Eric began to take his first steps out from under this cloud that enveloped him. Physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and the learning of basic life skills, were many of the regimens that started early and continued throughout his young life. Along with school came many extra-curricular forms of stimulus such as On Your Mark, the JCC, additional private tutoring that included speech and occupational therapy, and a program called Parents as Partners given by a young autism advocate and the future Executive Director of the Eden II programs, Joanne Gerenser. It was an important time for Eric, as he was beginning to show positive progress that came as a result of hours and hours of hard work and dedication from all of those who contributed to his therapies as well as his family and of course, Eric himself.

As the years progressed, Eric began to exhibit a higher level of cognition than anyone had expected, which led to the decision to send him into the Staten Island public school system. At first, Eric had a difficult time adjusting to the public school setting, but in time, he adapted well and began to flourish. Graduating from P.S 4 to P.S 36 to I.S 7 it came time to decide on a high school. It was apparent that Eric had exhibited both a high enough level of academic prowess and appropriate behavioral skills to qualify him for a unique program called REACH, given at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn.

The way he performed there made it apparent that attending college was a definite possibility. During his time in high school, Eric had been a member of the orchestra, the varsity swim team, the model U.N., and ultimately graduated in the top ten of the entire senior class. He received an award for academics at their graduation ceremonies at Brooklyn College and was ultimately accepted at St. John’s University with an academic scholarship. While at St. John’s, Eric worked in the Student Life office, joined a fraternity, acted in their theater group, The Stagers, and continued his academic achievements by graduating Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Political Science.

Today, Eric works in the Human Resources Department at Eden II Programs. Eric is thrilled to have his own sports show “The Blitz Zone” and another show called “Eric’s View” on CTV (Community Television) and is hoping some day to be a co-host on a sports show on ESPN. His achievements have been truly remarkable and by overcoming so many challenging obstacles, Eric stands as an example of hope and unlimited potential to all whose lives have been so profoundly affected by autism.

ValleyCats to donate portion of ticket sales to American Red Cross for disaster relief in Texas

TROY, NY – The Tri-City ValleyCats have announced that they will be donating $1.00 of each ticket sold between Monday, August 28 and Saturday, September 1 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey disaster relief in Texas.

The ValleyCats are a Class-A minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, who have been particularly affected by severe flooding in and around the Houston, Texas area. The Corpus Christi Hooks, a Double-A affiliate of the Astros, have also been severely affected.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those currently dealing with the horrendous situation in Texas, including the entire Houston Astros organization, those with the Corpus Christi Hooks, their friends, family, and fans,” said Matt Callahan, ValleyCats General Manager. “We stand by them during this tough time, and want to do what we can to assist in the ongoing relief efforts.”

There are currently four members of the ValleyCats roster who call Texas home, including pitcher Corbin Martin, who is from Houston and has family members dealing with the severe flooding. ValleyCats outfielder Corey Julks, who played at the University of Houston, is from nearby Friendswood, Texas, and also has close family and friends affected.

“Our hearts go out to the thousands of people affected by this catastrophic disaster in Texas”, said Kevin Coffey, American Red Cross Eastern NY Regional Chief Development Officer. “The Red Cross has launched a massive response to this devastating storm and needs financial donations to be able to provide immediate disaster relief. We know this is a challenging and emotional time, and Red Cross staff and volunteers are working around the clock to get help to where it is needed most.”

Four Young Community Stars Named Staten Island Yankees/Con Edison Kids

NEW YORK- Four Staten Island youths who demonstrate leadership and concern for their community are the 2017 Staten Island Yankees/Con Edison kids.

The students were honored Thursday at the first Staten Island Yankees/Con Edison Kids recognition night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George. The ceremony took place before the game against the Connecticut Tigers.

The honorees are: Julia Hart, 15, Isaiah Terry, 15, Triniti Jackson, 11, and Sean Gomez, 13.

“This program honors young people who excel in the classroom by getting good grades and in the community by donating their time for good causes,” said Will Smith, president and operating partner for the Yankees. “We thank Con Edison and look forward to honoring elite young Staten Islanders for years to come.”

The ballpark crowd acknowledged the winner with applause as their images flashed on the screen in center field while they stood on the field. The children and their parents then watched the game – a 4-0 Yankees victory – from a luxury suite.

“I think it is a pretty big accomplishment, and I’d like to thank Con Edison for naming me a 2017 Staten Island Yankees/Con Edison Kid,” said Sean Gomez. “I feel like I accomplished something significant and it has me feeling proud.”

Community organizations from across the Island nominated youths who exhibit leadership, sportsmanship, and volunteerism. The nominees also had to have a grade point average of B or better.

“Having quality volunteers like Julia and Isaiah is critical for our organization to sustain our mission,” said Heather Butts, executive director and co-founder of Health, Education, Academics, Life Skills, Training, and Help (HEALTH) for Kids. “Volunteering is important to the kids because the opportunity to beautify their enviroment gives them gratification.”

Additional information about the impressive honorees:

  • Julia Hart is a volunteer with HEALTH for Youth. As part of a gardening project this summer, she designed a model for an irrigation system.
  • Sean Gomez is a vice president with the Staten Island NAACP Youth Council and has represented the council at three state and two national conventions. Sean has won gold, silver and bronze medals in track and bowling while representing Staten Island at regional and state Special Olympics competitions.
  • Triniti Jackson is a leader of the NYC Parks Staten Island Recreation Robotics Team, inspiring her teammates, who participated in their first robotics competition this past year.
  • Isaiah Terry also volunteers with HEALTH for Youth. He has participated in park clean-ups and gardening projects. He takes his passion for volunteerism to school, where he participates in community service projects.

NYPL Charitable Foundation Awards Scholarship to Local Student

The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation has announced the recipients of over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets.

The Williamsport Crosscutters are proud to announce that Williamsport High School graduate Kara Hershey has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship. Kara will be attending Clarion University this fall, majoring in Chemistry.

Also receiving $2,500 scholarship awards were Akash Mishra (Connecticut Tigers) and Noah Land

(Mahoning Valley Scrappers). Ten other students from various league markets received $250 awards.

Now in its ninth year, the 2017 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two- or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible. Applicants are judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

 

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are pleased to have the opportunity to assist outstanding high school seniors within our league’s footprint for the ninth consecutive season,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “This program recognizes those seniors who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but demonstrate the positive community impact and lifelong memories fostered by their local NYPL clubs throughout the year.”

The New York-Penn League created the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization, in 2003. The mission of the Foundation is to provide focus and support for the collective and individual charitable and community efforts of the New York-Penn League, its Clubs, and their staff.

Muckdogs Announce Youth Baseball Clinic

August 8, 2017

Join us at Dwyer Stadium August 30th for our youth baseball clinic!

Kids ages 6-14 will receive a day of on-field instruction from the Muckdogs players and coaches on August 30th from 9 am – 1 pm. Children will learn from the pros in the areas of hitting, fielding, pitching, catching, base running and bunting. Then later that evening, campers will be able to come back to Dwyer for a private autograph signing with the team 30 minutes before the gates open (5:30 pm) and then be recognized on the field prior to the Muckdogs game vs. the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians affiliate).

Campers will also receive a special t-shirt not available in the team store, a clinic photo, two tickets to the August 30th game, as well as lunch, all for only $40. Registration forms are available at Dwyer Stadium and online at muckdogs.com. Space is limited and all registrations and payments must be turned in by Monday, August 21st.
