NYPL Announces Scholarship Contest

The Class-A Short-Season New York-Penn League and its member clubs are proud to announce that the league’s philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets.

Now in its eighth year, the 2016 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two- or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

The scholarship contest will consist of two stages – a local round and a league round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the league/final round. The 14 finalists will then be judged by league representatives. Three pplicants will be selected to receive the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists will receive a $250 book award.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are pleased to have the opportunity to assist outstanding high school seniors within our league’s footprint for the eighth consecutive season,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “This program will again recognize those seniors who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but demonstrate the positive community impact and lifelong memories fostered by their local NYPL clubs throughout the year.”

The deadline to submit applications to the nearest NYPL team is May 20, 2016. Each club’s winner, including the three $2,500 scholarship recipients, will be selected in mid-June.

The New York-Penn League and its 14 member clubs created the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization, in 2003. The mission of the Foundation is to provide focus and support for the collective and individual charitable and community efforts of the New York-Penn League, its Clubs, and their staff.

Muckdogs Announce Hit the Books Reading Program

The Batavia Muckdogs today announced the start of their reading program, designed to promote reading amongst the youth of the local communities. Along with the help of New York’s 529 College Savings Program, 2016 will mark the fourth year of the “HIT THE BOOKS with the Batavia Muckdogs” reading program.

As part of this program, the Muckdogs have provided various schools and libraries across local counties with customized bookmarks. On the back of these bookmarks, children can have a parent, guardian, teacher, or librarian initial each time they complete a book. When a child completes 10 books, they can redeem the bookmark at the Dwyer Stadium box office for a FREE TICKET to any Sunday-Thursday Batavia Muckdogs’ game! In addition to the free ticket, the child will also receive a prize courtesy of New York’s 529 College Savings Program. If a child reads 20 books, they will be entered into a drawing to win a backpack with school supplies, provided by New York’s 529 College Savings Program; along with the opportunity to throw out a first pitch at a Muckdogs game.

In addition to the many participating schools, bookmarks will be made available to children at the following local libraries:

Cutters Raise over $5,000 for James V. Brown Library

The Williamsport Crosscutters kicked of their tenth season with the Philadelphia Phillies with their annual Hot Stove Banquet on January 18 at the Genetti Hotel in downtown Williamsport.

The event featured Phillies manager Pete Mackanin and catcher Cameron Rupp in addition to Cutters manager and former World Series MVP Pat Borders and Japanese baseball legend Tom O’Malley. The guests entertained attendees with stories, answered audience questions and signed autographs.

In talking about the 2016 Phillies, Mackanin stated, “We experimented last year. This year is the other half of the experiment. I think we’re starting to build some depth to where we’re going to be pretty good.”

The night, presented in part by Woodlands Bank, WRAK Radio and the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, was also highlighted by auctions that featured a wealth of sports memorabilia including a special Phillies VIP Game Experience, an autographed giant Phanatic bobblehead and a full uniform worn by Tom O’Malley as a hitting coach for the Hanshin Tigers in 2014.

Another highlight of the event was the induction of the 2001 Williamsport Crosscutters team into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. The team, managed by Tony Beasley, had a record of 48-26. After losing game one of the NYPL Championship Series to the Brooklyn Cyclones, the remainder of the series was canceled due to the tragic events of September 11th. Brooklyn and Williamsport were declared co-champions, marking the first championship for a Williamsport professional team since 1960. A total of eight players from that squad went on to play in the major leagues including former Pirates outfielder Chris Duffy who returned to Williamsport for the event.

A portion of the proceeds from the evening were donated to the James V. Brown Library whose mission is, “To enable people to be the best they can be, to grow, to learn and to enjoy their lives while learning”. At the conclusion of the festivities, the library was presented with a check for $5,025.

CT Tigers To Honor Veterans Day With Special Offer

KeyBank and Lake Monsters team up to recognize United Way of Chittenden County

BURLINGTON, VT — The Vermont Lake Monsters, in partnership with KeyBank will be hosting 300 United Way of Chittenden County volunteers and partners July 23rd. The 7:05 PM game at Centennial Field will feature pre-game acknowledgement of this year’s annual campaign, in addition to featuring some of the United Way of Chittenden County’s partner agencies.

“Thank you to the Vermont Lake Monsters and KeyBank for hosting our volunteers and their families for a night out at the ballpark,” United Way Community Campaign Manager Reed Curry said. “United Way runs on the power of volunteers and we are excited to celebrate their important contributions and build momentum for our 2015 Community Campaign at one of Burlington’s best summer venues.”

In addition to the game day events that will include a first pitch and concourse tabling, the Vermont Lake Monsters will be wearing a special edition Home Jersey designed by the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington. ALL proceeds of an in game jersey auction will benefit the United Way of Chittenden County, made possible through the partnership with KeyBank.

Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team To Play At Centennial Field August 1st

BURLINGTON, VT – Historic Centennial Field will once again play host to a truly magical event as the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team will play an exhibition against Vermont-based celebrities August 1st, 2015. Made up of Veterans and Active-Duty Soldiers and Marines who have lost a limb(s) in post 9/11 combat, the WWAST tours the country in hopes of raising awareness of the sacrifices of braves soldiers and to show that through extensive training and rehabilitation, that these Soldiers, and others like them, that life without a limb is limitless.

The August 1st event will include an exhibition game with former Major League Pitchers Bill “Spaceman” Lee and Len Whitehouse. Actor, producer, and writer Rusty “The Logger” Dewees, country music star Jamie Lee Thurston, and Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger are also among those scheduled to appear. This has been made possible through support from the Four Aces Family Foundation.

Game time is 6:05 PM with gates opening at Centennial Field at 5:00 PM. NYPL Charitable Foundation Scholarship Returns For 2015

The New York-Penn League and its clubs are pleased to announce that the NYPL Charitable Foundation will award over $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding high school graduates once again in 2015.

For the seventh year, the NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school in the surrounding areas of each of the league’s 14 teams. Any student who has been accepted to a two or four-year college, university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and the impact of their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball on their lives.

The contest consists of two stages – a local and divisional round. Applicants begin by applying to their local NYPL team. From those applicants, one winner will be chosen and will become a finalist for the divisional round. The 14 divisional round winners will be separated by the three NYPL Divisions, (McNamara, Pinckney, and Stedler) with the winner of each division winning a $2,500 scholarship. All other local round winners will receive a $250 prize.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are pleased to have the opportunity to assist outstanding high school seniors within our league’s footprint for the sixth consecutive season,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “This program will again recognize those seniors who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but demonstrate the positive community impact and lifelong memories fostered by their local NYPL clubs throughout the year.”

High school seniors in the Harford County-area interested in entering the 2015 NYPL Scholarship Contest can pick up an official application at Ripken Stadium at 873 Long Drive, Aberdeen, MD 21001, or by visiting ironbirdsbaseball.com. Applications must be completed and submitted to the students’ local NYPL affiliate by Friday, June 26, 2015.

Each club’s outstanding student, including the three $2,500 scholarship winners, will be selected in late July and honored at a game in August.

The State College Spikes’ annual Paint the Park Pink event, presented by Mount Nittany Health, will take on a whole new dimension in 2015. Fans will be offered the opportunity to literally “Paint the Park Pink” to help the fight against breast cancer on Sunday, August 2 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

For the first time, fans that make a donation to the Breast Care Center at Mount Nittany Medical Center through The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center will have the chance to paint designated areas of the ballpark pink to honor those who have fought and those who continue to fight breast cancer. The event will take place during the Spikes’ 6:05 p.m. game against the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox).

In addition to painting the ballpark pink, fans can bid on the special Pink Camouflage Jerseys the Spikes will be wearing to benefit The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center. The Jersey-off-the-Back Auction will take place during the night, with all winners receiving their jerseys immediately after the game.

Plus, there will numerous other ways for fans to donate to the fight against breast cancer throughout the night, including special pink balloons, a 50/50 drawing, and more.

On Sunday, July 19th the Brooklyn Cyclones will wear special jerseys as they celebrate Relay for Life Day at MCU Park.  The jerseys will feature a purple ribbon with the names of those affected by cancer written on each jersey.  If you have a loved one you would like to feature on the jersey, you can make a $75 donation to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.  There is space for 75 names, so act quickly.

Cutters Dominican Dinner to Benefit A.C.E.S.

The Williamsport Crosscutters have teamed up with A.C.E.S. North America in announcing the 3rd Annual Dominican Plate – An Evening of Dominican Dining and Entertainment with the Cutters.

The event will be held on Tuesday, July 14 in the Grand Ballroom of the Genetti Hotel, 200 W. Fourth St., Williamsport. Doors open at 5:30pm with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar followed by a Dominican-style dinner served at 6:30pm.

The buffet dinner of traditional Dominican fare will be served by members of the Williamsport Crosscutters who hail from the Dominican Republic, along with some of their teammates.

Proceeds from the event will benefit A.C.E.S. North America, an organization working to create sustainable development projects in the Dominican Republic. The charity, founded in Williamsport in 2005, uses all-volunteer personnel for its operations.

A.C.E.S. Founder Linell Stabler stated, “Teaming up with the Crosscutters for this Dominican fundraiser is a fun match for our mission of helping people in the Dominican Republic.”

In addition, the night will feature live musical entertainment, Chinese and live auctions of sports memorabilia and other items plus a balloon bust wine raffle.   Last year’s event raised over $4,000 for the charity.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to help out a worthy charity that does outstanding work in an area of the world many of our players call home,” said Gabe Sinicropi the team’s Vice-President of Marketing and Public Relations.

Due to the popularity of this event in the past, reserved seating will now be utilized to make for a more comfortable evening for all attendees. Tickets for The Dominican Plate are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under. 5th Annual Cutters 5K to Benefit CDC

The Williamsport Crosscutters, in partnership with the Children’s Development Center, will be holding the 5th Annual Cutters 5K on Saturday, June 27th at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field.

The race, through Williamsport’s West End, begins at 9am with registration open at 8am. The course has runners starting outside the ballpark entrance with the final sprint inside the stadium finishing at home plate. Both runners and walkers are encouraged to take part in the event.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Children’s Development Center of Williamsport. Since 1923, the CDC has been providing services to children with special needs from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s event attracted over 200 participants. Since its inception, almost $50,000 has been raised for the CDC through this event.

“Since the affiliation between Hope Enterprises and the Children’s Development Center was finalized, both organizations have been working together to enhance the service options for children and their families in our area. Having the support of our community with events such as the Cutters 5K, allows us to be better prepared to meet the needs of those to be served” stated Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female runners will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game that evening. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC again on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi.

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the June 27th Crosscutters vs. Batavia MuckDogs game at 7:05pm. New England Federal Credit Union And Lake Monsters Team Up For CHAMP Sightings

BURLINGTON, VT — New England Federal Credit Union and the Vermont Lake Monsters will once again be teaming up this year to actively support the community by offering free CHAMP appearances (called “CHAMP Sightings”) to non-profit organizations and other programs that share their commitment to enhancing the well being of the local communities.

“Whether it is at the ballpark or out in the community, CHAMP stands for so many positive things,” said Nate Cloutier, Lake Monsters’ Executive Director – Sales & Marketing. “He creates smiles and memories, and it is such a joy to work with New England Federal Credit Union on bringing CHAMP in to the community to enhance these local events. To see CHAMP at awareness walks or at the hospital, and see the smile and hear the laughter is priceless.”

This partnership between New England Federal Credit Union and the Lake Monsters will give certain organizations and programs the opportunity to have CHAMP make an appearance at their event for no charge.

Spikes announce 2015 school programs

Outreach programs provide lessons to over 15,000 Central PA students

The State College Spikes are pleased to announce the team’s roster of 2015 school programs. Each program has a unique theme and focus, with the common goal of using the Spikes brand to supplement classroom curriculum in the areas of reading, writing, exercising, eating healthy and conserving water. These programs are always offered free of charge to area schools.

Most programs are implemented through school assemblies and involve mascots, players and front office staff. All programs offer K-8 students the opportunity to earn free tickets to a Spikes’ home game upon completion of one of the fun and educational school programs. The Spikes annually reach over 15,000 Central Pennsylvania school children in Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Huntingdon, Mifflin and Juniata Counties through community outreach programs.

New for the 2015 season is the “Head Above Water” program presented by the State College Borough Water Authority. The program teaches water conservation and its positive effects, with a free Spikes ticket offered upon completion of the program.

Below are capsules of the Spikes 2015 school programs:

Healthy Home Runs presented by Mount Nittany Health
The Spikes and Mount Nittany Health are offering this school program, which is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle by creating awareness of the importance of proper nutrition and physical activity. Ike the Spike and representatives from Mount Nittany Health will visit schools to hold a kick-off assembly, which can be held outside or inside. During the assembly, K-6 students will be educated on the importance of exercise and nutrition before having the opportunity to take “Ike’s Fun Fit Challenge.” Students who complete the simple and fun physical fitness challenge will be rewarded with one complimentary Bullpen Box ticket and an on-field recognition ceremony during the Spikes’ Healthy Home Runs Day at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday, August 2.

Books and Baseball Program presented by National Penn Bank
The Spikes and National Penn Bank have partnered for the Books and Baseball Reading Program for the 2015 season. This program encourages students to complete a reading program by rewarding them with free Spikes tickets upon completion. Participating students will receive a special bookmark to keep track of the books they read. Any participating student that reads four books under the supervision of their teacher or parent will earn one free ticket for a designated Books and Baseball game during the 2015 season. At those games, participants will be honored from the field for their participation and completion of the programs. The program includes a free assembly and reading presentation with the National Penn Bank Nook Monster at any of the participating schools. Books and Baseball is designed for students in grades K-8.

Spikes Essay Contest presented by the Centre Daily Times
The Spikes Essay Contest is for K-8 students to creatively share their experiences and thoughts about the State College Spikes through pictures or essays. The contest is divided into three different grade levels: K-1, 2-4 and 5-8. Students in kindergarten through first grade are encouraged to include drawings along with one sentence for the theme “If I were Ike the Spike.” The second to fourth grade group will be asked to write a short essay entitled “If I coached the Spikes.” Fifth to eighth graders will be encouraged to write a 300 word or fewer essay entitled “If I could create a new food item for the Spikes, it would be (blank).” A winning essay will be chosen in each of the three age groups and those winners will earn tickets to a 2015 Spikes home game for their entire grade. The submission deadline for the Spikes Essay Contest is June 1.

“Head Above Water” presented by the State College Borough Water Authority
All new for 2015 – the State College Borough Water Authority and the Spikes have partnered to implement a youth water conservation awareness program, “Head Above Water.” Ike the Spike, along with a representative from the State College Borough Water Authority, will be educating students on the importance of water conservation and the effects it can have. The program is an initiative that will encourage students to practice good water conservation habits by rewarding them with a free Spikes ticket upon completion of the program. Participating students will receive a special baseball card to help remind them how to conserve water. Any participating student that completes the water conservation program under the supervision of his or her teacher and/or parent will earn one free ticket to a 2015 Spikes baseball game. The program includes a free assembly and water conservation presentation with Ike the Spike and the State College Borough Water Authority at any of the participating schools.

There is no cost for schools to participate in any of the Spikes school programs. The Spikes, defending New York-Penn League champions, begin their 38-game home schedule with Opening Night on Friday, June 19 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, and the slate continues through September 6.

Single-game tickets for each game in the 2015 season will be available starting at TicketFest 2015 on Saturday, May 2 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Five Guys Team Up With Lake Monsters For Annual “May Days” Fundraising Campaign

BURLINGTON, VT — The Vermont Lake Monsters are excited to announce Five Guys as a partner for their annual May Days fundraiser to benefit non-profits from across the state of Vermont. “Five Guys May Days” fundraiser will launch May 1st as a month-long program devoted to helping raise funds and awareness for state wide non-profits.

Support of local non-profits has demonstrated the strong commitment both the Lake Monsters and Five Guys have to the greater Burlington community. The goal of this program is not only to provide the opportunity for organizations to raise money, but also raise awareness for their programs while providing a chance for supporters to come together at the ballpark.

COTS is just one of the many local non-profits who has benefited from participating in Five Guys May Days and will continue the tradition this year. “COTS very much appreciates the support we receive from our local community, and the Lake Monsters fundraiser is a great example of how we can work together to raise awareness about homelessness in Vermont” said COTS Executive Director Rita Markley.

Participating non-profits will have the entire month of May to promote and sell $6 Lake Monsters tickets through a specific URL link designated to their organization for a specific game during the season. After the month of May is completed, the Lake Monsters will donate half of the proceeds back to the organization. Following the selling period, Five Guys will donate up to $500 to match the amount raised by the highest selling non-profit in the program. Organizations will then be recognized on field with a check presentation at a Lake Monsters game this season. This opportunity is an easy way to fundraiser for non-profits, simply by reaching out to your employees, supporters, volunteers, and sponsors with the URL link. Concord Museum exhibit opens Friday, April 17

LOWELL, MASS. – The Lowell Spinners, Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are pleased to announce their partnership with the Concord Museum on The Art of Baseball, which opens to the public Friday, April 17 and runs through Sunday, September 20.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Concord Museum on this wonderful exhibition which really captures the essence of why baseball is the national past time,” said Spinners President and General Manager Tim Bawmann. “From the actual artwork to the program of events scheduled, this exhibition will be a great way to further the relationship of the game with baseball fans.”

The exhibition includes nearly 50 works of fine and folk art from The Gladstone Collection of Baseball Art, a private New York collection that has been gathered over the past 40 years, as well as Boston Red Sox artifacts from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and historian, Concord resident and lifelong baseball fan Doris Kearns Goodwin is the Honorary Curator.

Included amongst the display items includes a Ted Williams glove from the 1946 season and World Series on loan from the National Baseball Hall of Fame plus artifacts from the 2013 World Series season.

Among the programs and events scheduled include a meet & greet with local author, Matt Tavares, on June 4, Vintage Baseball games with the Lowell Base Ball Club (1877-78) and Lynn Live Oaks on May 2 and July 18, a special Sports Memorabilia Appraisal Day with Leila Dunbar and more.

“These events are a fantastic opportunity for baseball fans young and old to experience the history of the game,” said Bawmann. “We are honored to be a part of this great exhibition.”

The Concord Museum is where all of Concord’s remarkable past is brought to life through an inspiring collection of historical, literary and decorative arts treasures, including the 1775 Revere lantern and Henry Thoreau’s Walden desk. The Art of Baseball exhibit will be open to the public beginning Friday, April 17 with admission $10 for adults, seniors and students $8 and youth (6-18) $5. Kids six and under are free.
