6th Annual Autism Awareness Night April 19th

Lynchburg-HillcatsWith 1 in 110 children in the United States diagnosed with some form of Autism, the Hillcats are lending a hand to offer awareness and support to this cause in 2014. The 6th Annual Autism Awareness Night presented by Physicians Treatment Center is scheduled for Saturday, April 19th and will raise money for Commonwealth Autism Services.

As many as 75,000 in Virginia are affected with this developmental disability and Commonwealth Autism Services is an organization that strives to enrich the lives of those in Virginia with autism, throughout their entire lifespan through statewide services. GA tickets are $10 and two dollars of each ticket sold for April 19th’s game will be donated to this organization.

Commonwealth-AutismThis year’s Autism Awareness Night presented by Physicians Treatment Center is slated for 6:05pm when the Hillcats will take on the Potomac Nationals at City Stadium. Plus, the first 1,000 fans through the gates that evening will receive a free commemorative t-shirt! Along with donating a portion of the ticket costs, proceeds from a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and sponsor donations will also be donated during an in-game check presentation. Last year’s Autism Awareness Night raised $11,000!

Salem Red Sox Eager to Salute Local Heroes

“Military Appreciation Baseball Card Giveaway” Scheduled for August 9

With Opening Day fast approaching, the Salem Red Sox are proud to announce an unprecedented promotion that will offer well-deserved recognition to some of the bravest men and women of the Roanoke Valley. In addition to creating a baseball card set of the Carolina League Champions in 2014, the team will also generate a pack of cards featuring many of the region’s dedicated servicemen and women for a “Military Appreciation Baseball Card Giveaway,” scheduled for Saturday, August 9 at LewisGale Field.

Starting immediately, fans can log onto the Salem Red Sox Facebook page and submit nominations of family members and/or friends who are worthy of inclusion in this one-of-kind creation. Each submission should include the following information:

  • Name with rank
  • Military Branch
  • Height
  • Weight (if wanted)
  • Years of service
  • DOB (if wanted)
  • Hometown
  • A bio about his or her history in the military (preferably 75-100 words)
  • A photo (headshot or full body in dress uniform)

Fans are asked to submit their candidates by March 31. After receiving nominees, all photos will be placed in an album where the “likes” will be tallied, and the 30 photos with the most “likes” will be chosen for this special card set. In the event of a tie, the earlier photo submitted will have the honor of being included as part of this collection. Voting via “likes” will continue through the first half of the season.

The final product will be a collector’s item of 30 cards, with 1,000 decks to be distributed to the first 1,000 fans through the gate on “Military Appreciation Night” on August 9, when the Salem Red Sox host the Potomac Nationals at 6:05. In addition to the hero recognition, that night at the ballpark will also include a free player poster giveaway along with the weekly Saturday spectacle “Nine Innings of Winning.”

The defending Carolina League champs open the 2014 season in Myrtle Beach on April 3, while the home opener at LewisGale Field, featuring the Mills Cup Trophy and championship banner unveiling, is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8 at 7:05 against Winston-Salem. Woodbridge, VA-The Potomac Nationals have donated their Pfitzner Stadium field tarp to the University of Mary Washington Baseball program (Fredericksburg, Virginia) in an ongoing effort to bolster the resources of amateur and collegiate baseball in the Northern Virginia region.

The University of Mary Washington Eagles compete in the Division III Capital Athletic Conference at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium and will play 29 regular-season home games in 2014.

Dickinson Stadium holds a seating capacity of over 1,000 fans and is one of the finest facilities in all of NCAA Baseball.

“Any time the Potomac Nationals can positively impact another baseball program in our community, our club is going to jump at that opportunity. We are glad to donate our field tarp to the University of Mary Washington Baseball program, and we trust it will complement their terrific facility in a way that will minimize the amount of games postponed or lost due to the elements,” said Potomac Nationals Vice President/General Manager, Josh Olerud.

University of Mary Washington Baseball Head Coach, Wayne Riser reached out to the Nationals in advance of the Eagles’ home opener on February 15th to inquire about the availability of the Potomac Nationals’ field tarp.

“Everyone involved with our program is immensely appreciative of the generosity of the Potomac Nationals and especially the efforts of Mr. Olerud,” said UMW Head Coach, Wayne Riser.

“This tarp will benefit UMW Baseball student-athletes for years to come and is a great boost to our program.”

Riser coordinated with Olerud to arrange for members of the University of Mary Washington Baseball team to make the drive from Fredericksburg to Woodbridge to load the tarp on a flat-bed vehicle and haul it back to the Home of the Eagles.

“We are grateful to the Potomac Nationals for their recent donation of a tarp for our baseball facility,” said UMW Director of Athletics Ken Tyler.

“We appreciate the club’s generosity and engagement with UMW Athletics, and we hope our student-athletes and fans will support the Potomac Nationals this season.”

The University of Mary Washington Baseball team is off to a red-hot (4-1) start to the 2014 campaign and is riding a four-game winning streak as of February 28th.

Squirrels to Host ASK Fun Walk & 5K

Richmond, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels held a press conference on Thursday to announce a partnership with the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation that will include the Squirrels hosting the 2014 ASK Fun Walk & 5K presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield at The Diamond. The Fun Walk & 5K will take place on the morning of Saturday, April 26th, and will precede the Squirrels’ game against the New Britain Rock Cats that evening.

The Fun Walk & 5K, which is the signature event on ASK’s fundraising calendar, will include a course that takes runners and walkers around the historic area and end at home plate at The Diamond. The 2013 ASK Walk & 5K attracted 2,500 participants from throughout the Greater Richmond area and raised over $150,000 to help local children with cancer and their families.

“We are continually looking for ways to do more within this community, and this was a huge opportunity to do just that,” said Flying Squirrels’ Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “Any time you have the chance to work with passionate people to benefit a tremendous cause, you jump at it. That’s what we have done here, and we can’t wait for April 26th.”

The event will begin with check-in and same-day registration at 7 a.m. The 5K Run & Family Fun Walk will begin at 9 a.m. To register in advance of the event or for more information, visit ASKWalk.org.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Flying Squirrels on this year’s ASK Fun Walk & 5k presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield,” said ASK Executive Director Amy Godkin. “With their help, we hope to raise over $150,000 to help local children with cancer and their families.”

Since 2006, the Fun Walk & 5K has raised more than $890,000, with the goal of reaching the one-million-dollar mark at this year’s event.

The Flying Squirrels also used Thursday’s press conference as an opportunity to highlight additional upcoming community objectives. As the team prepares for its 5th Season Celebration in 2014 and the launch of the newly-minted Flying Squirrels Charities, they also pointed to numerous successes among their many community programs and events from the past.

“As we prepare for what we know will be a historic fifth season in Richmond, we spent some time reflecting back on all the wonderful opportunities we have had to impact this community,” added Parnell. “As we add another tremendous event and partner today, we thought it appropriate to recognize the countless people and organizations that have made our overwhelming success in the past possible.”

Additionally, the Squirrels announced plans to unveil the most comprehensive promotional schedule in their franchise history. The schedule will be announced in a series that will begin on Monday with the release of 2014 fireworks dates.

Tides organization to renovate local youth field

The Norfolk Tides today announced the return of a contest in which a local youth field will be renovated by Tides groundskeepers and front office staff. Proudly presented by Goodwill, this field makeover will include an upgrade to the playing surface and an improvement to existing dugouts, with the recipient of the makeover being determined by a fan vote on the Tides’ Facebook page.

“After the overwhelming community support we’ve received over the first two years of this program, we are thrilled to be continuing this project again” said Tides General Manager Joe Gregory. “Our entire staff looks forward to helping out these worthy organizations, and we enjoy doing our part to ensure children can be proud of where they play baseball.”

Those interested in having the Tides makeover their facility should submit a picture of their field to Heather McKeating at hmckeating@norfolktides.com. Along with the photo, fans are asked to include a brief description of why their league should receive this enhancement. The deadline to submit this information is February 7, with online voting taking place on the Tides’ Facebook page from February 17 to February 21.

2014 is the third year in which the Tides will be renovating a local youth field. Over the first two years of the program, the Tides have helped renovate five local fields – Ocean View Little League (Norfolk), Smithfield Recreation Association (Smithfield), Bennett’s Creek Little League (Suffolk), Phoebus Little League (Hampton) and Shore Little League (Nassawadox).

“Goodwill is proud to get behind such an amazing program, and we know the importance of supporting local initiatives like this one” said Goodwill Community Relations Manager Danielle Cronin. “Goodwill delivers employment services to moms and dads throughout Hampton Roads every day, which we refer to as Family Strengthening. If mom and dad have the right supports in place at home, the likelihood of being and staying successfully employed is greater. Keeping kids positively influenced through a sport like baseball is critical to the success of everyone – individuals, families and communities.”

The project is made possible thanks to Goodwill and the Tides Youth Baseball Fund, a program established by the Tides in 1990 as a way to raise money for youth baseball and softball programs in Hampton Roads. In addition to assisting with field renovations, the Youth Baseball Fund also helps local teams and leagues with travel expenses. P-Nats Front Office Raises 2K to Support “Movember”

Woodbridge, VA-In support of Movember, a global charity which raises funds and awareness to assist in proliferating men’s health, male members of the Potomac Nationals front office along with their female counterparts, dubbed Mo Sistas, are proud to announce its Team Nationals Mo Bros yielded a $2,000 donation to support the Movember movement.

Throughout Movember, the P-Nats front office encouraged Nationals fans, family, friends, colleagues, and business partners to join this worldwide initiative in an effort to place the spotlight on men’s health issues including prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health challenges.

By wearing a mustache for an entire month, Team Nationals Mo Bros members were able to spark a conversation about the Movember charity, and in turn its purpose and impact, while soliciting funds to support this great cause.

Those who donated then grew their own “Mo” and spread the network’s Movember message.

From one mustache to another, funds were sprouted that will be used to facilitate Movember’s effort to catalyze the awareness and education of men’s health issues across the world.

“In Minor League Baseball, I’ve been a part of many fundraising efforts, and in this case, Movember was certainly a terrific way for our staff to raise funds for a great cause, and through their excellent effort, we were able to hit our donation goal,” said Potomac Nationals Vice President/General Manager, Josh Olerud.

“We had a blast participating, and it was a great way to boost off-season cohesion among our front office members. We look forward to building off our first Movember, and creatively we will get even more fans involved next year.”

To generate the Movember buzz among members of the P-Nats fan base, the Nationals rewarded their faithful for donating to the charity with prize packages that included 2014 Opening Day tickets, Pfitzner Stadium food vouchers, P-Nats hats, first pitch opportunities, and player autographs.

As Movember organizers tally the final global contribution to the movement from over 200,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas which is expected to be in excess of $20 million, the Potomac Nationals are counting down to the start of Movember 2014 which is only ten and a half months away.

Woodbridge, VA-The Potomac Nationals are proud to partner with INOVA for a blood drive at Pfitzner Stadium on Monday, August 19th from 3:30pm to 8:00pm.

Fans who complete the donor screening process and donate blood will receive two grandstand tickets to the P-Nats game on Sunday, August 25th.

To make an appointment to donate blood, fans can either call 1-866-BLOODSAVES (256-6372) or visit www.inova.org/donateblood. Once on the website, click on “Schedule a Donation” then “Donate Blood” and use sponsor code 7667.

Woodbridge, VA-The 2nd Annual Guns vs. Hoses Charity Softball Game at Pfitzner Stadium is set for Sunday, August 11th in which Prince William County Police officers will engage in a standoff with the Yorkshire Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department with local bragging rights on the line.

For the second consecutive summer, men and women of the PWC Police Department and a selected area fire department will square off to benefit a charity chosen by the respective softball squads.

This year, the Guns vs. Hoses showdown will take place from 4:00pm – 5:15pm before the Potomac Nationals contest vs. the Carolina Mudcats (Cleveland Indians) at 6:05pm on 8/11 at The Pfitz.

Gates to Pfitzner Stadium will open to the public at 4:00pm to watch the softball classic.

“Our hometown heroes do so much in our communities, and without the full recognition they deserve. The Potomac Nationals will celebrate all they have done to serve us with an annual day of fun and softball that honors both the police and fire departments along with all of their families,” said Potomac Nationals Vice President/General Manager, Josh Olerud.

For each ticket to the P-Nats game sold by the PWC Police Department and the Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Department, the Potomac Nationals will donate $4 to the chosen charities for each softball team.

Representatives from the police and fire departments will have emergency vehicles displayed at the ballpark and activities for P-Nats fans to enjoy and participate in prior to the Potomac Nationals game.

All members of the PWC Police Department and the Yorkshire Fire Department will be recognized on the field before the game and in the middle of the 7th inning, a special rendition of God Bless America will honor the men and women who have lost their lives protecting their community.

Fans will be encouraged to bring new or used childrens’ books to the ballpark that evening to donate to the Bristol Public Library. One lucky book donor that evening will win an autographed bat from the Sox.

“We are excited to partner with the Bristol Public Library to encourage members of our community to join us in helping young people learn to enjoy reading,” said Mahlon Luttrell, General Manager of the Bristol White Sox.

All of the donated books will be delivered to the Library on July 10 by Sox players and Dingbat, the official Bristol White Sox mascot, as part of the Library’s Summer Reading Program. The players will read to the children, and Dingbat will distribute free tickets to Bristol Sox games.

In addition, participants in the Library’s Summer Reading Program will also be eligible to win additional free tickets to see the Sox play by reading a certain number of books during the summer. More information on this program can be obtained at the Library. The Sox will also present an autographed bat to the participating child who reads the most books during the summer.

The Bristol White Sox professional baseball team, also known as the Bristol Sox, is the Advanced Rookie affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, competes in the 10-team Appalachian League, and is operated by Bristol Baseball, Inc., a locally-based non-profit organization.

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the 2012 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, are asking their fans to step forward and help the Oklahoma Tornado Relief Efforts on Sunday, June 2nd at The Diamond. The Squirrels will have a Better Box mobile storage unit in front of the main gate for items to be donated and shipped to a relief distribution center in Oklahoma. The items needed are specific and are listed below. The storage unit is scheduled to be ready outside of the main gate beginning at 11:00AM and will remain there throughout the Squirrels game vs. the Erie SeaWolves. Gates for the game open at 12:30PM with first pitch scheduled for 2:05PM. Fans who donate items to the effort will receive a raffle ticket to win one of several prizes. Winners will be drawn during the game.

“We want to do all we can to help out not only our community but people in general,” said Flying Squirrels Vice President and COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We are delighted to help in this endeavor as we can only begin to see from the pictures the magnitude of the devastation. We encourage Squirrels fans from all over the region to help us help Oklahoma.”

Items Needed; canned food, Band-Aids, Q-Tips, thermometers, dental floss, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sports drinks and bottled water, baby blankets, shoes of all sizes, medical ointments and creams, feminine hygiene products, razors, travel hand sanitizer, anti-bacterial wipes, empty plastic containers, snack size chips, underwear and socks, Ziploc bags, senior supplies (hearing aid batteries, denture cream Depends), glasses (reading and prescription), shampoo and soap, work gloves, and tarps.

The items will be shipped to Journey Church in Norman, Oklahoma. The church has been set up as a shelter, distribution and relief center. Hopewell Baptist Church in New Kent is helping coordinate the efforts.

Sunday, June 2nd is also Superhero Day at The Diamond presented by Health Diagnostics Laboratory, Inc. The first 2,500 fans ages 14 and under will receive a free comic book, and all fans are encouraged to dress as their favorite superheroes. Fans are also encouraged to be a hero for someone in need by donating any and all items listed above. Woodbridge, VA- The Potomac Nationals will host Military Appreciation Night at Pfitzner Stadium to support their featured non-profit organization, Hope For the Warriors® on Sunday, June 23rd as the P-Nats host the Carolina Mudcats (Cleveland Indians) for a 6:05pm first pitch with gates opening at 5:00pm. The evening of all-encompassing gratitude to military members and the families of the great men and women of the United States armed services will feature family-friendly fun throughout the game leading up to a signature post-game fireworks show.

The evening will honor and remember members of the American military for their courageous service to our country while raising funds for Hope For the Warriors®, a national non-profit organization that assists post 9/11 military service members, their families, and families of the fallen who have undergone physical and psychological wounds while in the line of duty.

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels will partner with Victory Golf Events to hold their first charity golf tournament, the Flying Squirrels Charity Golf Open on Monday, June 17th at the Dominion Club. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Miracle League of Richmond. The tournament will be played with teams of four competing in a scramble format along with a celebrity teammate. Celebrity teammates will include Flying Squirrels players, coaches and staff members as well additional celebrities from the sports and media community in Richmond.

“Hosting a golf tournament is something we have wanted to do since we arrived in Richmond,” said Flying Squirrels’ Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We always have a lot of guys on the team who love to play, and it is a great way to get many of our other friends in the community involved to aid the effort of the outstanding folks at the Miracle League of Richmond. RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels will partner with Hops for Heroes to serve Homefront IPA at The Diamond during their game against the Trenton Thunder on Thursday, May 23rd. Homefront IPA will be available at the Squirrels’ Virginia Beer Taste the Local stand with all proceeds benefitting Operation Homefront. Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times.

Additionally, the team will hold a special media tasting of Homefront IPA at The Diamond on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 2 p.m. All media members are invited to attend/cover the tasting.

The goal of Hops for Heroes is to raise money and awareness for Operation Homefront through the sale of Homefront IPA and its relationship with the craft brewing and professional baseball industries.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Hops for Heroes to aid Operation Homefront,” said Flying Squirrels Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We are constantly striving to honor and assist our military personnel, and to be able to do in such a creative and baseball-oriented way is extremely exciting for us.”

Hops for Heroes is a charitable effort started in 2011 in Seattle, Washington with Fremont Brewing Company and Chris and Phil Ray of Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU). Homefront IPA is a beer that was created by both breweries and brewed at Fremont in order to raise money for Operation Homefront. The beer was aged on unfinished Louisville Slugger maples bats and sold in both bottles and kegs throughout the Seattle area. 100% of the proceeds were given to the Washington Chapter of Operation Homefront. “From its beginning in 2011, Homefront IPA has been all about beer, baseball, and most importantly, America’s Troops,” said Chris Ray of Center of the Universe Brewery Company. ” It debuted at Safeco Field in 2011, so it was only appropriate to continue that tradition with the Flying Squirrels in 2013. We believe the Flying Squirrels share the same belief in charity and community as we do, making it a perfect partnership.”

Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times. In 2012, Hops for Heroes expanded to include six total breweries from all over the country. Each brewery has been paired with their local Operation Homefront chapter. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the beer will go directly to the local chapters. In addition to the breweries, sponsors have volunteered to donate some of the hops and grains to lower the cost of producing the beer and thus increasing the donation to Operation Homefront. Hops for Heroes has professional baseball player ambassadors for each of the breweries associated with the project. This allows for an increase in awareness of the effort and the charity. Tides to renovate Shore Little League Wednesday

The Norfolk Tides organization will be renovating the Shore Little League field in Northampton County on Wednesday, April 24. Shore Little League was a participant in the 2012 Field Renovation Contest, with the Eastern Shore community garnering over 2,700 votes for the field.

Members of the Tides front office staff, including head groundskeeper Kenny Magner, will take part in the field makeover, which will include an upgrade to the playing surface and an improvement to existing dugouts. The staff will spend 9 am – 4 pm Wednesday working on the field.

“We were extremely impressed by the number of votes Shore Little League field received in our inaugural Field Renovation Contest last year” said Tides General Manager Joe Gregory. “The outpouring of support the small community received was overwhelming, and we are very happy to do our part in helping city of Nassawadox have a field their children can be proud to call their own.”

Shore Little League, which is the only chartered league in the county of Northampton, is the fifth youth field the Tides have renovated since the beginning of 2012. The Tides helped to renovate three fields in 2012 – Ocean View Little League (Norfolk), Smithfield Recreation Association (Smithfield) and Bennett’s Creek Little League (Suffolk) – before renovating the Phoebus Little League field in Hampton last week.

The project is possible because of the Youth Baseball Fund, a program established by the Tides in 1990 as a way to raise money for youth baseball and softball programs in Hampton Roads. In addition to assisting with field renovations, the Youth Baseball Fund also helps local teams and leagues with travel expenses.

Potomac Nationals Team Up with the U.S. Army to Hire Veterans

Pilot program captained by Army Chief of Staff, Ray Odierno, will facilitate the hiring of U.S. Army Soldiers

Woodbridge, VA- Minor League Baseball’s Carolina League and the Potomac Nationals are joining the U.S. Army in launching a pilot program focused on hiring U.S. Army Soldiers transitioning to civilian careers, veterans and their families for the 2013 baseball season.

This initiative has stemmed directly from one of the Army Chief of Staff, General Ray Odierno’s top priorities of assisting soldiers transitioning from the Army, as well as Army Reserve and National Guard soldiers in finding jobs.

“We must do our utmost to ensure that the Soldiers leaving the force are treated fairly and that they and their families are provided with support to help them successfully transition to civilian life,” said Odierno.

This task falls directly to the U.S. Army Transition Strategic Outreach (TSO) and U.S. Army Reserve Employer Partnership Office (EPO), whose main mission is to provide civilian organizations Soldiers and veterans with proven leadership skills, work well as a member of the team, possess skills that allow them to efficiently perform under stress and solve problems while adapting to change.

The pilot program will begin with Northern Virginia’s Potomac Nationals and, if successful, will expand to the other Carolina League teams throughout the season.

“Those of us who have been in baseball a long time know the value of veterans as employees, and we are happy to share this experience with our fans and business partners. We are very proud that our Potomac club and the Army have taken this step, and I expect to be taking this initiative league-wide in the near future,” said John Hopkins, Carolina League President.

The pilot program will be announced during the Potomac Nationals’ season opener against the Lynchburg Hillcats (Atlanta Braves) on Friday, April 5th where they will recognize the first veteran of the program to be hired, Retired Army Sergeant Arthur Bouvier IV. He will be given the honor of throwing out the first pitch and will be joined by officials from the Potomac Nationals and U.S. Army on field. Additionally, fans attending the game will be treated to the U.S. Army’s Fife and Drum Corps prior to the game for a special performance in honor of this initiative.
