RiverDogs Lend Helping Hand to Oklahoma

CHARLESTON, SC — General Manager Dave Echols has announced that 15 percent of all profits of Charleston RiverDogs merchandise purchased through MiLB.com will be donated to the Oklahoma City Red Cross, as part of Minor League Baseball’s “15 for 15” initiative to raise funds to assist those affected by the recent storms in Oklahoma. The donations will run until June 17.

A total of 51 minor league teams — including the RiverDogs — are participating in the endeavor to assist those in the Sooner State that were affected by recent tornados.

“The Charleston RiverDogs are pleased to participate in this endeavor,” said Echols. “It’s very important for us to help during this devastating and unfortunate time in Oklahoma.”

Legends Helping “Restore the Shore”

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends and the Lakewood BlueClaws are South Atlantic League rivals on the baseball field, but the Legends are enthusiastically supporting the New Jersey-based BlueClaws on their “Restore the Shore” campaign in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The Legends purchased “Restore the Shore” t-shirts in support of the efforts by the Blue Claws to help victims of the super storm. The campaign will continue through Memorial Day. While the BlueClaws are working closely with individuals and businesses in their area, support is welcome from anywhere. Atlantic Physical Therapy and Ergo clothing are sponsoring the campaign.

“Supporting the BlueClaws in the Restore the Shore efforts was a no-brainer,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends’ director of community relations and special events. “As a member of the South Atlantic League baseball family, we wish we were able to do more to help those affected. The hope is that our contribution to our friends in Lakewood and surrounding areas will highlight the importance of reaching out and supporting communities outside of your own, and will encourage other teams and individuals to do the same. We are grateful for the opportunity to be involved.”

Each Friday until Memorial Day, participants will wear the t-shirts, and each person will make a donation every Friday. Details are available at BlueClaws.com/Restore.

Businesses that participate will be honored in a ceremony at a 2013 BlueClaws game.

“Obviously, there were so many of our friends and neighbors impacted significantly by Hurricane Sandy,” said Dave Manzo, co-founder of Atlantic Physical Therapy Center. “Through this program, we can raise money in a fun way over the next several months.”

In early 2013, those impacted by the storm will be able to fill out an application, and donations will be made to as many families as possible.

“We have an opportunity to help many re-build after Sandy’s devastation,” said BlueClaws General Manager Geoff Brown. “We’re looking forward to helping, and we hope that there are a lot of businesses and families that can help us make an impact.” ###

Custom Hooks Surfboard Up for Auction!

CORPUS CHRISTI – A custom Corpus Christi Hooks/Nolan Ryan surfboard – one of three in existence – will be auctioned off by the Texas Surf Museum during its Third Annual Surftoberfest this weekend.

The board is presently owned by Ryan-Sanders Baseball/Entertainment COO JJ Gottsch, who’s donating the Robert August creation as part of Surftoberfest’s Port Aransas Education Foundation fundraiser.

Gottsch was the first Hooks president from the club’s 2003 inception through the 2008 season.

“Brad Lomax has been a great friend to me personally, the Hooks, and the community at-large for a number of years,” Gottsch said. “When I heard that he had Robert (August) coming to the event this year, and that the funds were going to help hurricane relief efforts, I immediately thought of the board and how it could hopefully help those efforts. It will be a truly unique gift for any Robert August, Nolan Ryan, or Corpus Christi Hooks enthusiast.”

August will personally autograph the board for the winner.

The board’s design was produced in a special collaboration between August, his son Sam, Reid Ryan, Reese Ryan, and Gottsch. A second Hooks/Ryan WIR “What I Ride” (9.2) surfboard is currently displayed at the museum. Unique features include a classic blue/white design incorporating the Hooks’ primary logo in various elements, plus Nolan Ryan’s iconic “34” logo.

Robert August (born 1945) is an American surfer and surfboard shaper, most famous as one of the subjects of Bruce Brown’s 1966 surf documentary “The Endless Summer” with friend Mike Hynson. The film follows the two pursuing their hobby world-wide during the California off-season, meeting other surfers and discussing surf culture. August picked up surfing in the 1950s, when the sport’s popularity had just begun. His father, Blackie August, was also a noted surfer. Robert’s enthusiasm for and involvement in “The Endless Summer” influenced the sport’s growth for decades to come. His surfboards are sold under the Robert August Surfboards brand. He continues to travel the world promoting surfing, and in 1994 was involved in the shooting of “The Endless Summer II,” in which surfers Pat O’Connell and Robert “Wingnut” Weaver retrace the places visited by August and Hynson 30 years earlier.

Nolan Ryan – Elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, Nolan Ryan was inducted on July 25, 1999, on 98.79 percent of eligible ballots, the second-highest figure in history. He is the only player to have his uniform number retired by three different teams, the Los Angeles Angels (#30) and Houston Astros (#34) joining the Texas Rangers (#34). Ryan compiled a 324-292 record and 3.19 earned run average over 807 appearances in an unprecedented 27 seasons with the New York Mets (1966; 1968-71), California Angels (1972-79), Astros (1980-88), and Rangers (1989-93). The all-time leader in strikeouts (5,714) and no-hitters (7), Ryan has owned or shared 53 Major League records. An eight-time All-Star, he also threw 12 one-hitters, tying Bob Feller for the most ever, and owns two of the top four single-season strikeout totals in Major League history, including an all-time best 383 with the 1973 Angels.

Ryan is executive advisor to Houston Astros owner Jim Crane.

Biloxi Shuckers make major community impact in 2017

BIBiloxi ShuckersLOXI, MS – In a season marked by several on-field accomplishments in the third year of Minor League Baseball on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Biloxi Shuckers are most proud of their various community outreach efforts. From theme nights to jersey auctions, the Shuckers have made a financial and symbolic impact on their community throughout the 2017 season.

The Shuckers were nominated by the Minor League Baseball Community as a finalist for a prestigious “Golden Bobblehead” award for the “Best Community Promotion or Event” after helping with the Hattiesburg/Petal tornado relief efforts and William Carey vs. Biloxi Shuckers exhibition game. Shuckers’ employees traveled to Petal, Mississippi to assist cleanup crews. The tornado caused damage to the campus of nearby William Carey University, so the Shuckers scheduled a benefit exhibition game against the school’s baseball team before the first road trip of the season. The game raised $6,090 for the university’s tornado recovery efforts. This effort coupled with numerous other initiatives garnered the recognition.

In addition to the recognition by Minor League Baseball, the Shuckers were also a finalist for the Southern League’s Community Service Award.

Shuckers’ front office members laid the groundwork for a successful season with several other community initiatives. Employees laid sod at an athletic complex in Moss Point, Mississippi to revitalize the area’s youth baseball program.

In partnership with Walmart, the inaugural Shuckers “Hit the Books” reading program brought Schooner the Seagull to 17 schools and over 10,000 students to incentivize reading with Shuckers tickets as a reward.

Since their inception, the Shuckers have had a strong relationship with nearby Keesler Air Force Base and the substantial military presence on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That trend continued in 2017, as every Monday became “Military Monday” with special discounts for active and retired members of the armed forces. Special camouflage jerseys, worn every Monday and designed with input from Keesler staff, and were auctioned off at the end of the season with proceeds benefiting local military causes.

Throughout the season, the Shuckers have partnered with several charitable organizations to raise money and awareness for deserving local causes. Three additional jersey auctions earlier this season have brought in money for the March of Dimes, Mississippi Center for Autism, and Favre4Hope breast cancer research.

The Shuckers have also hosted a Christmas in July toy drive for the Uplift Foundation, Seatbelt Safety night for the K&J Foundation (started by team photographer Brian Pearse), and Skin Cancer Awareness night in partnership with the MiLB Charities Sun Safety Initiative.

Youth outreach was not limited to the “Hit the Books” program. The Shuckers turned their two “Education Day” games into vocational field trips, with visits from Biloxi Fire and Police, NASA, the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Department of Marine Resources, University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, and Mississippi State University’s Coastal Research Extension.

Former New York Mets catcher and Biloxi native Barry Lyons was formally invited into the Shuckers organization as an ambassador prior to the 2017 season, and the team assisted him in the creation of the first series of Shuckers Kids Clinics for local youth. In addition, the “Field of Dreams” program allowed more than 100 young baseball and softball players from the area to take the field alongside Shuckers players for the national anthem.

In partnership with the Knights of Columbus, the Biloxi Shuckers collected 765 lbs of food/product during a food drive on Sunday, July 30th for them to distribute in the community.

In addition to these widespread efforts, the Shuckers have also made numerous player and mascot appearances in the community over the course of the season. The Shuckers in-kind donations and in-stadium fundraising initiatives have raised $155,455.91 for over 100 charitable organizations. The Biloxi Shuckers understand the responsibility that comes with their platform in the community and are determined to make a positive impact on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

In addition to monetary contributions, the Biloxi Shuckers front office staff have logged 265 community volunteer hours thus far in 2017. Those hours have been spent working with area schools, NCBC’s Child Development Center, Humane Society of South Mississippi, VA Medical Center, Loaves and Fishes and cleanup efforts from Hurricane Harvey.

Fort Myers Miracle Ownership Gifts $10,000 to the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, Inc.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 27, 2017) – The Fort Myers Miracle, Advanced-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, have announced that Miracle ownership, SJS Beacon Baseball LLC, will be donating $10,000 to the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools Inc. “With this donation today and our other efforts, the Miracle continue to provide targeted relief to those impacted by Hurricane Irma,” stated Miracle principal owner Jason Hochberg. “Many schools in Lee County and most importantly, their students were impacted by the hurricane. The funds provided today by the Miracle will go directly to help those students and repair the schools. We encourage Miracle fans to support the Foundation as well.”

This is the second major donation from team ownership due to Hurricane Irma. Back on September 13, it was announced that funds would be donated to the Southwest Florida Community Foundation. The foundation has teamed up with the United Way to directly help people displaced from their homes and those suffering losses due to Irma in Lee, Collier and neighboring counties. Fort Myers Miracle to Sell Hurricane Irma Relief Shirts; All Proceeds Go to Relief Efforts

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 19, 2017) – Having announced a new “Hurricane Irma Relief” logo designed by Brandiose last Wednesday, the Fort Myers Miracle, Advanced-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, are ready to offer t-shirts for purchase to the public. Each t-shirt is $20 and all proceeds will benefit those affected by Hurricane Irma.

“Being able to offer an option for anyone to give back to our Southwest Florida community and the state of Florida is what Minor League Baseball is all about,” said Miracle Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ben Hemmen. “It is a pleasure to say all of our relief shirts are being produced by Vivid Images USA out of Jacksonville. There is nothing better to see than people in Florida helping those in Florida who have been affected by this deadly storm. That is truly teamwork. Hammond Stadium and the CenturyLink Sports Complex is still being used as a staging area for disaster relief. The stadium and Miracle offices are back with power but remain closed to the general public until further notice. Once the grounds are open to the public again, the team store will also open its doors with limited hours of operation.

“One Team” Shirts On Sale to Benefit Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

ROUND ROCK, Texas – One state, one team. The Round Rock Express launched specially designed t-shirts Thursday afternoon to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The heather blue shirts showcase the outline of the state of Texas with the organization’s One Team motto in line with the state.

The shirts are currently on-sale for $20 plus tax both online and in-person at the Railyard Team Store at Dell Diamond. Sizes run from small to XXL.

Following the loss of Express President Chris Almendarez’s wife Jana in the spring of 2016 to a glioblastoma, the Express rallied together and got behind the “One Team” motto as a showing of support. There is a pillar in the front office filled with focus words from each staff member and topped with the words “One Team” to serve as a reminder of that support system.

“As an organization, we know we must rely on and help each other to be the best we can be,” said Express General Manager Tim Jackson. “No matter our differences, we are all working for the same end goal as one cohesive unit. Following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, Texans exemplified this by coming together to help each other out. Even those who were impacted are reaching out to others to see how they can help. All proceeds from the sale of the shirts will go directly to the Rebuild Texas Fund, headed up by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. They are focused on helping people in their time of greatest need and also addressing the long-term rebuilding effort in South Texas.

Clearwater Parks and Rec. with Phillies Florida Serve Lunch After Hurricane Irma

The City of Clearwater Parks and Rec along with Phillies Florida Operations, fed hundreds of city employees and emergency volunteers lunch this week at Spectrum Field during the recovery from Hurricane Irma.

The Phillies had the inventory available at the park and the city provided volunteers to assist. Many of the people enjoying a warm hamburger or hot dog were without power at home themselves.

During times of need in our community, the Phillies are grateful to work with such amazing partners like the City of Clearwater and are thankful for the safety of the families in our organization.

Fort Myers Miracle Announce Initial Hurricane Irma Relief Efforts

(September 13, 2017) – The Fort Myers Miracle, Advanced-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, announce initial Hurricane Irma relief efforts aimed at helping Lee, Collier and neighboring counties. Ownership will donate money, and the staff will volunteer their time within the community. The team also announces a new logo symbolizing aid to Southwest Florida.

The foundation has teamed up with the United Way to directly help people displaced from their homes and those suffering losses due to Irma in Lee, Collier and neighboring counties. “We are grateful that Hurricane Irma did not have the terrible impacts that were initially forecast,” stated Miracle principal owner Jason Hochberg. “However, many people are suffering from the storm. The Miracle will do their part to help relieve some of the suffering, and we cannot wait to see everyone back at the ballpark in 2018 for spring training and Miracle season. Upon initial review, the CenturyLink Sports Complex / Hammond Stadium sustained minor damage from Hurricane Irma. The stadium and Miracle offices are currently without power and remain officially closed until further notice. The complex is being used as a staging ground for the National Guard and other hurricane relief efforts. Miracle staff will volunteer a portion of their time to assist with the local cleanup.

Finally, the Miracle will be presenting new related events at the ballpark during the upcoming 2018 season to further the relief efforts. They will be designated by the logo as a “Hurricane Irma Relief” event with proceeds from each event benefitting those affected by Hurricane Irma. Shuckers to team up with Corpus Christi for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

The Biloxi Shuckers front office staff is teaming up with the Corpus Christi Hooks to aid the Texas Coastal Bend residents in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts! Members of the front office staff will travel to Texas to help in the cleanup efforts and deliver much-needed supplies.

ITEMS NEEDED:
Water, diapers, animal food, bug spray, and toiletries are all in high demand. Fans can drop off items at the Biloxi Shuckers front office at MGM Park.

You can also provide a monetary donation via this LINK. 

Donations will be accepted after the week of September 18, as any donations dropped off after our trip will be donated to Hurricane Irma relief efforts in Florida.

The Corpus Christi Hooks are meeting Texas Coastal Bend residents at their point-of-need by partnering with local and national charities in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The devastating Category 4 storm made landfall at Rockport, Texas, on Friday, August 25, 2017.    

Please help our efforts to get Texas Coastal Bend residents back on their feet. 

This relief initiative is vitally important to the Corpus Christi Hooks Baseball Club because so much of the affected region is in our area. For example, of 51 high school communities, approximately 40 percent were affected by Harvey, including those hardest hit: Rockport-Fulton, Port Aransas, Aransas Pass, Ingleside, Refugio, Woodsboro, Victoria, Port Lavaca, Flour Bluff, Sinton, Taft, Gregory-Portland, Beeville, and Odem.    

Fans from these towns and others have been instrumental in our success since the Hooks began play in 2005 and we want to use our platform to give back and make sure their needs are met during this time of great adversity.

Baysox to Hold Online Auction to Aid Hurricane Harvey Relief

BOWIE, Md. – In conjunction with Minor League Baseball Charities, the Bowie Baysox are participating in an online auction to provide relief to the MiLB communities that have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Minor League Baseball Charities is collecting funds on behalf of Minor League Baseball’s 160 teams to provide relief to those communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. MiLB will match all donations provided by its teams, up to $10,000. 100% of the proceeds from these auction items will help those clubs whose communities are affected.

Items the Baysox have up for bid through our website (or directly through Baysox.milbauctions.com) include a 2017 team autographed authentic game jersey signed by Orioles #2 prospect Austin Hays, Ryan Mountcastle, Cedric Mullins, Eastern League wins leader Yefry Ramirez, Tanner Scott and Eastern League MVP Garabez Rosa. There are also Eastern League baseballs signed by Hays, Mountcastle, Mullins, Scott and DJ Stewart that are up for bidding.

The auction runs through 3:00 pm on Thursday, September 15.

The 2017 Bowie Baysox season is presented by Money One Federal Credit Union. Single game playoff tickets are for the Western Division Championship Series vs. the Altoona Curve are available at www.baysox.com.

Donation Drive for Hurricane Harvey Cleanup Efforts at Dell Diamond Sunday

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Wish For Our Heroes will be at Dell Diamond for the 9th annual Reckless Kelly’s Celebrity Softball Jam this Sunday collecting donations to aid in Hurricane Harvey cleanup efforts.

The non-profit said the biggest need is for cleaning supplies, garbage bags, rakes, tarps, tools and gift cards to home improvement stores. Additionally, they will collect new and gently used sports equipment and musical instruments to take to those in the affected areas that lost their gear or instruments in the storm and its aftermath.

All proceeds from the Celebrity Softball Jam are going straight to help with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts through Rebuild Texas. There will be a silent auction on the concourse featuring an autographed Josh Beckett jersey, a Willie Robertson autographed baseball and more. Proceeds from the auction will also go to Rebuild Texas.

The Jam features a celebrity softball game followed by a two-stage concert featuring over 30 acts. An all-star roster will take the field for an antic-filled celebrity softball game. Former Longhorns Ricky Williams, Cat Osterman, Quan Cosby, Kasey Studdard, Brooks Kieschnick and Greg Swindell will join MLB All-Stars Josh Beckett and Norm Charlton and more in the dugouts at Dell Diamond.

The packed musical lineup features Jack Ingram, American Aquarium, Randy Rogers, Roger Creager, Wade Bowen, Kevin Fowler, Cody Canada & the Departed, Midnight River Choir, Suzy Bogguss, Jamie Lin Wilson, John Evans, Charlie Robison, Rosie Flores, Jessie Dayton, Jason Eady, Mike and the Moonpies, Shinyribs, Bart Crow, Courtney Patton and more.

Since its inception, the Jam has raised over $350,000 through the Reckless Kelly Charitable Youth Foundation for area youth leagues, including the funding of a $150,000 renovation of Mabson Field in East Austin, TX.

RoughRiders raise more than $30,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief

FRISCO, Texas (Sept. 6, 2017) – The Frisco RoughRiders Foundation raised $30,856 for Hurricane Harvey relief throughout the team’s final homestand of the regular season, which ended Sept. 4. The proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

“The outpouring of support for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey over the last week is truly inspiring,” RoughRiders Chief Operating Officer Scott Burchett said. “We’re so proud to witness the tremendous generosity of RoughRiders fans and their unwavering assistance for our neighbors along the southeast Texas coast.”

The RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, employed several fundraising efforts during the seven-game homestand, including 10 percent from all sales at the Riders Outpost team store, proceeds from special Pass the Boot activities during games, cash donations at the RoughRiders Foundation table and auctions of RoughRiders items.

Riders Outpost also has limited edition “Texas Tough” T-Shirts available both in store and online for a minimum $10 donation to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. More than 1,000 t-shirts have been ordered and will continue to be available at roughriders.milbstore.com through Friday, Sept. 8.

Intimidators to host raffle at playoff game to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief aid

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Sept. 6, 2017) – As the Kannapolis Intimidators, Class A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, prepare to open the 2017 post-season, the team has announced a special in-stadium raffle at Friday’s home playoff game to help raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief in conjunction with Minor League Baseball and MiLB Charities. Fans at the playoff game Friday, Sept. 8, can purchase raffle tickets to enter to win a team-signed Stars & Stripes Military Jersey, a team-signed bat, an autographed 2017 team card set, a Darryl Strawberry signed baseball, and more, and MiLB Charities will match all combined club donations raised, up to $10,000. Gates open at 6 p.m. for Game 2 of the Best-of-3 series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System.

Local Pro Sports Teams Combining Efforts on Disaster Relief and Recovery in Oregon and Around the Country

PORTLAND, Ore. (September 5, 2017) – With disaster response and relief efforts happening in their own communities and across the country, the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA), Portland Timbers (MLS), Portland Thorns FC (NWSL), Portland Winterhawks (Western Hockey League) and Hillsboro Hops (Northwest League) will band together to raise much-needed funds and blood donations to channel through the American Red Cross. This is the first joint-philanthropic initiative among the five local professional franchises focusing on a specific cause – to bring aid to victims of Oregon’s wildfires; Hurricane Harvey in Texas; and the potential impact of Hurricane Irma in Florida.

“The destruction we’ve seen from the Oregon wildfires and Hurricane Harvey is heartbreaking,” said Chris McGowan, President & CEO of the Trail Blazers and Rose Quarter. “The journey to recovery will be a long one for all impacted areas. The professional sports community here in Portland is rallying our respective fan bases, employees and partners to contribute resources to assist in the effort where it’s needed most.”

“Our hearts go out to the families and individuals affected by the devastating fires in Oregon and the communities in Southeast Texas as they begin the process to rebuild and heal,” said Mike Golub, President of Business for the Timbers and Thorns FC. “By working together with our local partners, we are able to maximize our collective impact in support of the communities affected by the devastation caused by these disasters.”

The first steps taken will be to hold individual blood drives starting tomorrow, with each team hosting its own specially-designated day at the headquarters for the Portland American Red Cross, located at 3131 North Vancouver Avenue. The need for blood is constant and the American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood and blood products to hospitals in the nation.

Fundraising efforts by each team will take place in the coming weeks and months at select home games and events to be announced soon. The Timbers, Thorns FC and Hops seasons are currently underway, with the Winterhawks and Trail Blazers beginning their 2017-18 seasons soon. Additional information will be posted on each team’s website and through their social media channels.

“We’re pleased to be involved with the team effort to raise funds and support the relief efforts locally and nationally,” said K.L. Wombacher, President and General Manager of the Hillsboro Hops. “Having two players on our roster that we care deeply about being from the Houston area, Hurricane Harvey hits home for us. Our hearts go out to all those who have lost so much over the last week. We hope to do everything we can to help them get their lives back.”
