Flying Squirrels To Hold First Charity Golf Tournament

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels will partner with Victory Golf Events to hold their first charity golf tournament, the Flying Squirrels Charity Golf Open on Monday, June 17th at the Dominion Club. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Miracle League of Richmond. The tournament will be played with teams of four competing in a scramble format along with a celebrity teammate. Celebrity teammates will include Flying Squirrels players, coaches and staff members as well additional celebrities from the sports and media community in Richmond.

“Hosting a golf tournament is something we have wanted to do since we arrived in Richmond,” said Flying Squirrels’ Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We always have a lot of guys on the team who love to play, and it is a great way to get many of our other friends in the community involved to aid the effort of the outstanding folks at the Miracle League of Richmond. I just hope I don’t hack it up too badly out there for the Dominion Club’s sake.”

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels will partner with Hops for Heroes to serve Homefront IPA at The Diamond during their game against the Trenton Thunder on Thursday, May 23rd. Homefront IPA will be available at the Squirrels’ Virginia Beer Taste the Local stand with all proceeds benefitting Operation Homefront. Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times.

Additionally, the team will hold a special media tasting of Homefront IPA at The Diamond on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 2 p.m. All media members are invited to attend/cover the tasting.

The goal of Hops for Heroes is to raise money and awareness for Operation Homefront through the sale of Homefront IPA and its relationship with the craft brewing and professional baseball industries.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Hops for Heroes to aid Operation Homefront,” said Flying Squirrels Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We are constantly striving to honor and assist our military personnel, and to be able to do in such a creative and baseball-oriented way is extremely exciting for us.”

Hops for Heroes is a charitable effort started in 2011 in Seattle, Washington with Fremont Brewing Company and Chris and Phil Ray of Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU). Homefront IPA is a beer that was created by both breweries and brewed at Fremont in order to raise money for Operation Homefront. The beer was aged on unfinished Louisville Slugger maples bats and sold in both bottles and kegs throughout the Seattle area. 100% of the proceeds were given to the Washington Chapter of Operation Homefront. “From its beginning in 2011, Homefront IPA has been all about beer, baseball, and most importantly, America’s Troops,” said Chris Ray of Center of the Universe Brewery Company. ” It debuted at Safeco Field in 2011, so it was only appropriate to continue that tradition with the Flying Squirrels in 2013. We believe the Flying Squirrels share the same belief in charity and community as we do, making it a perfect partnership.”

Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times. In 2012, Hops for Heroes expanded to include six total breweries from all over the country. Each brewery has been paired with their local Operation Homefront chapter. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the beer will go directly to the local chapters. In addition to the breweries, sponsors have volunteered to donate some of the hops and grains to lower the cost of producing the beer and thus increasing the donation to Operation Homefront. Hops for Heroes has professional baseball player ambassadors for each of the breweries associated with the project. This allows for an increase in awareness of the effort and the charity. Louisville Slugger has also donated six laser-inscribed bats for each brewery.

The media tasting on the 22nd will also include media availability from Flying Squirrels’ personnel, Chris Ray and members of the United States Military based at Fort Lee, located in Petersburg, VA.

Tigers Make Donation to Mayor’s Pantry

NORWICH, CT- The Connecticut Tigers are pleased to announce a donation to the Mayor’s Pantry of Norwich of $5,420 from parking revenue collected at Dodd Stadium.

“Norwich Human Services is pleased to accept this check from the CT Tigers on behalf of our Norwich food pantries,” said Director of Human Services Beverly Goulet. “We appreciate this very generous donation and also wish to thank the CT Tigers fans for their support!”

Tigers Vice President & Assistant General Manager Eric Knighton (far left) and Vice President & General Manager C.J. Knudsen (far right) made the presentation on Friday. Goulet, Norwich Human Services Account Clerk Sheila Molocko and Norwich Human Services Administrative Coordinator Janice Thompson (all pictured) accepted the check on behalf of the city.

“It’s vitally important for the Tigers to be an active member of our community,” said Knudsen. “Norwich does so much for us and this is a great way for us to give back!”

The Connecticut Tigers are the NYPL affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game (38 home, 38 away) that opens on June 17 against the Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. 2013 season tickets and tickets to the 2013 NYPL All-Star Game are now on sale! Cutters 5K Run to benefit CDC

The Williamsport Crosscutters, in partnership with the Children’s Development Center, will be holding the 3rd Annual Cutters 5K Run, presented by The Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, on Saturday, June 29th   at Historic Bowman Field.

The race, through Williamsport’s West End, begins at 9am with registration open at 8am. The course has runners starting outside the ballpark entrance with the finish line on the field.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Children’s Development Center of Williamsport. Since 1923, the CDC has been providing services to children with special needs from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s inaugural event attracted over 200 participants while raising $15,000 for the CDC.

“Since the affiliation between Hope Enterprises and the Children’s Development Center was finalized on last year, both organizations have been working together to enhance the service options for children and their families in our area. Having the support of our community with events such as the Cutters 5K Run, allows us to be better prepared to meet the needs of those to be served” according to Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female finisher will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game that evening. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi. “We expect to raise over $10,000 for the CDC with this event.”

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the June 29th Crosscutters vs. Mahoning Valley Scrappers game at 7:05pm. Fluor Field Goes Pink for Mother’s Day

There will be a lot of pink at Fluor Field on Sunday, as the Drive team up with the South Carolina Mountains to Midlands affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, for a special Mother’s Day celebration.

As ladies enter the ballpark, they will be greeted by Drive players with a pink carnation and commemorative pink Drive t-shirt. At the Main Street Gate, Scene on 7’s Kimberly Kelly will be on the pink carpet, interviewing fans and breast cancer survivors.

During the game, the Drive will be wearing pink jerseys and the bases will all be pink. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on all of these during the game through a silent auction, with proceeds going to the South Carolina Mountains to Midlands affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Pink Night jerseys to honor breast cancer fighters

Over the past seven seasons, Paint the Park Pink Night has become one of the State College Spikes’ staple events by raising awareness of the fight against breast cancer. In 2013, the Spikes will join together with the Central PA community to put a personal touch on the battle, as fans can nominate family and friends affected by breast cancer to have their names commemorated on the Spikes’ special pink jerseys worn during the August 3 game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Starting today, and extending through June 1, fans will be able to e-mail the Spikes at painttheparkpink@statecollegespikes.com with the names of anyone who has battled breast cancer. The first 200 names e-mailed to the Spikes will then be printed onto the Spikes’ pink jerseys, which will be worn by the team for the eighth annual Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by Mount Nittany Health.

E-mail nominations must include the name of the person to be honored on the uniform, the name and address of the nominating person, and a short description of the person’s battle. The Spikes will be sharing some of these stories at the ballpark throughout Paint the Park Pink Night.

This occasion marks the first time that any baseball team will be honoring those who have fought breast cancer directly on their game jerseys.

The jerseys will then be auctioned off during the game to benefit the Breast Care Center at Mount Nittany Medical Center, with the winners receiving them on the field shortly after the final out of the night is made. In addition, the Spikes will use pink bats during the game, which will also be auctioned off to benefit the fight against breast cancer.

Single-game tickets for the Paint the Park Pink Night game on August 3, as well as all 38 regular season home dates in the 2013 season, are now available to purchase online at StateCollegeSpikes.com, by calling (814) 272-1711, or by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Box Office. Pink Out Night

Tampa, FL. – The Tampa Yankees and The Container Store will team up in the fight against Breast Cancer as they host “Pink Out Night” on Saturday, May 4th, at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Gates open at 5:00pm, and the Tampa Yankees will take on the Clearwater Threshers at 6:00pm. There will be pre-game activities for all fans and a post game fireworks show sponsored by Bright House Networks.

Tampa Yankees players and coaches will be wearing custom made pink jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. At the conclusion of the game all auction winners will have the opportunity to have their picture taken and jersey signed with the player who wore it.

Tickets for Pink Out Night, as well as future Tampa Yankees games can be purchased at the George M. Steinbrenner Field Box Office or through TicketMaster. Ticket prices start at $4 for General Admission and $6 for Reserved Seating. Family 4-packs are also available for Saturday’s game for $38 and include two passes to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

MBF Announces 2013 Grant Recipients

Grant program exceeds $100,000 for sixth consecutive year

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Baseball Foundation (MBF) is pleased to announce its 2013 grant class, which includes 30 organizations from nine counties in Mid-Michigan. The 2013 class received a total of $105,079, making it the sixth consecutive year that the grant total exceeded $100,000. In its six years of existence, the MBF grant program has awarded a total of $622,459 to non-profits of Mid-Michigan.

Since 2008, the Michigan Baseball Foundation has awarded 184 grants to deserving non-profit organizations across 14 counties.

The Foundation began its sixth annual grant process in November 2012 and solicited grant applications from non-profit organizations throughout the region. All applicants were required to meet one or more of the following guidelines, which reflected the purposes for which the Michigan Baseball Foundation was organized:

  • The organization contributes to regional economic development.
  • The organization is based in Mid-Michigan and serves young people.
  • The organization promotes amateur sports and fitness

This year’s Michigan Baseball Foundation grants committee was chaired by Jenee Velasquez. Committee members included Bill Stavropoulos, Paul Barbeau, Ann Craig, Mike Hayes, Susan Kaltenbach, Scott Litle, Dom Monastiere, Abbe Mulders and Emily Schafer – a combination of members of the Michigan Baseball Foundation board of directors and the Loons management team.

GCF raises money for CAF’s Boston Marathon Fund

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund (GCF) raised $784 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s Boston Marathon Fund during the Grizzlies’ game at Chukchansi Park on Saturday, April 20th. The GCF raffled off an autographed bat, which was signed by the entire Fresno Grizzlies team, during the game.

“The tragedy during the Boston Marathon affected the entire nation, and we felt it was necessary for our community of Grizzlies fans to do our part,” said Team President Chris Cummings. “As a native of New England, I am proud of the Grizzlies and the Grizzlies fans for their donation to a worthy cause with the Challenged Athletes Foundation.”

Challenged Athletes Foundation started the Boston Marathon Fund in response to last week’s bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15th.

Challenged Athletes Foundation supports athletes with physical challenges by providing the appropriate adaptive equipment, hosting clinics, and connecting mentors and mentees. In addition to helping victims procure adaptive equipment, they are hosting a running clinic in Boston in October. They are also inviting the Boston Marathon bombing victims to CAF’s San Diego Triathlon Challenge, which features more than 250 physically challenged athletes in October.

Isotopes “Batting for Boston” Raises Nearly $4,500

Albuquerque-IsotopesWhen called upon to help victims of the devastating events in Boston, Albuquerque responded emphatically, contributing nearly $4,500 as part of the “Batting for Boston” fundraiser last Saturday, April 20, at Isotopes Park. Over the course of five hours, more than 200 cars came through the drive-thru fundraiser, which was hosted by the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Contributions ranged from a few dollars to a check for $500.00, as people throughout the Duke City took time out of their busy day to donate to the great cause which raised $4,368.65. Proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to the One Fund Boston, Inc., created by the City of Boston to benefit the victims and their families most affected by the tragic events during the Boston Marathon.

The Tampa Yankees Support SERVE

Tampa, Fla. – The Tampa Yankees held their annual Teacher Appreciation Night on Saturday, April 13.  This event has raised over $4,300 in the last two years to benefit SERVE.

SERVE is the official volunteer arm of the School District of Hillsborough County.  Their mission is to increase student achievement and enhance the educational experience by providing community volunteers to support Hillsborough County educators.

Over 2,200 fans entered the stadium to watch the Tampa Yankees defeat the Daytona Cubs 9-4.  Players wore white pinstripe education themed jerseys which were auctioned off during the game.  Auction winners had the opportunity to go onto the field after the game to meet the player who wore the jersey and get it autographed.

The Tampa Yankees will wear custom theme jerseys at three or more events this season to raise money for other non-profit organizations.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Fort Wayne TinCaps and Fort4Fitness are pledging their support to the victims of the tragic events that took place at the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15. During Fort Wayne’s upcoming three-game series at Parkview Field from Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 21, the TinCaps organization will make a donation to the American Red Cross for each fan who comes to the ballpark sporting attire — shirt, sweatshirt, hat, bib, etc. — from a charitable or competitive running race.

“Although we in Fort Wayne are hundreds of miles from Boston, we feel compelled to do whatever we can to help those who are in need,” TinCaps President Mike Nutter said. “And as hosts of the annual Fort4Fitness races, we feel especially tied to the running community. While the dollars that will be raised over the weekend are important, perhaps just as helpful is to give folks in the Fort Wayne area a chance to show their solidarity with those suffering in Boston.”

Fans who visit the Fort4Fitness booth behind home plate at Parkview Field this weekend will have the opportunity to sign a banner of support that will then be sent to Boston and given to those affected by Monday’s events. In addition, fans will be able to make individual donations to the American Red Cross.

“It’s important that we take the time to remember and honor the victims of this tragic event,” Fort4Fitness Executive Director Brad Kimmel said. “We may run our races in a different city and state, but we’re all in this together, and this is just one small way we can show our support for everyone who has been impacted by this. We encourage all past participants and their friends and family to wear their Fort4Fitness or other race gear as a sign of support.”

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Charleston RiverDogs will be offering military personnel $5 tickets all season at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park thanks to General Dynamics Land Systems–Force Protection. Plus, the club has planned several Military Appreciation Nights and military-themed promotions throughout the season.

Fridays will feature a sea of red at Riley Park as the popular family-friendly General Dynamics Land Systems-Force Protection Red Shirt Friday returns. All fans who wear red shirts to the game on Friday will save $1 off the purchase of their ticket at the box office, plus RiverDogs players and coaches will be wearing special red digi-camo jerseys. The dollar saved by fans off of their ticket can be donated to benefit the charity Carolina Canines, a local charity which works with military prisoners at the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston and teaches them how to train rescue dogs as service animals for wounded and injured veterans. Additionally, information on the Medal of Honor Museum at nearby Patriots Point will be on hand throughout the season at the Guest Relations booth.

Carolina-Canines-for-Vets-logoIn addition to the military theme on Friday nights, the RiverDogs are also hosting three different Military Appreciation Nights: Thursday April, 25, Saturday July, 13 and Wednesday, August, 25. Each Military Night allows active and retired military members FREE entry for themselves and their family members by showing a Military ID at the box office.

In addition, the RiverDogs will be hosting Coast Guard Night on Thursday, May 23. This is a night to salute Coast Guard Sector Charleston. Game time is set for 7:05 pm as the RiverDogs host the rival Greenville Drive.

$15,000 Raised In “Restore The Shore” Jersey Auction

BlueClaws thank fans for their support; proceeds to benefit BlueClaws Charities relief efforts

Lakewood-BlueClaws-LogoThe BlueClaws are proud to announce that the team raised $15,000 through their Restore The Shore jersey auction that ran at the team’s April 4-7 games at FirstEnergy Park. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to BlueClaws Charities Restore The Shore initiative.

At the first four BlueClaws games of the year, the team had 50 Restore The Shore jerseys, each of which included the name of one town in Monmouth or Ocean Counties that was impacted by Sandy. These jerseys were worn by BlueClaws players, coaches, and staff members throughout the weekend.Bidding, in the form of a silent auction, took place at all four games, concluding on April 7th.

BlueClaws-Charities-logo“We’re very grateful for the support of our fans in this auction,” said BlueClaws General Manager Brandon Marano. “We raised a great sum of money, all of which will be given back to those among our community in need.”

The BlueClaws have five additional Restore The Shore jerseys, each of which says “Jersey Shore” on the back. These jerseys will be auctioned off online in the coming weeks. Fans that were unable to bid this weekend still have a chance to own one of these unique collector’s items. Details about these auctions will be released on BlueClaws.com, on the team’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and in Clawd’s Corner, the official BlueClaws e-newsletter.

Sandy-impacted families, groups, and organizations that are interested in applying for a grant can do so by visiting BlueClaws.com/Restore and returning a downloadable application by May 15th.

The exact number of grants that will be handed out depend on the amount of money raised.The BlueClaws are still raising money through Restore The Shore t-shirt sales. The shirts can be ordered in the Claws Cove or on the phone by calling 732-901-7000 ext. 192.

Gwinnett Braves Award March Grant to Aurora Theatre

Local Theatre is recognized for their commitment to the Fine Arts

Gwinnett BravesThe Gwinnett Braves have awarded their $1,000 grant for the month of March to the Aurora Theatre of Lawrenceville, GA. This month’s grant, intended to support organizations that promote art programs and education, will help Aurora Theatre in its purchase of a new portable sound system.

aurora-theater-logoIn 2011, the Aurora Theatre’s Academy and Conservatory launched an educational outreach program. With county schools cutting down music and art programs, the Aurora Theatre travels to local Gwinnett County Public Schools and educates through workshops and small traveling shows.   This season, the program will debut “Unnecessary Monsters,” an interactive play that will discuss the issue of bullying. With the help of the G-Braves, the play will reach a greater audience and avoid technical difficulties.

The program has grown exponentially since last fall.  Through their hard work and dedication, the Aurora Theatre program has provided the youth of Gwinnett County with more exposure to the arts.

“Our education program has many facets,” said the Director of Education Jaclyn Hofmann. “We have our Aurora Academy training program, learning library shows, in school workshops and other features. With this grant we can purchase a portable sound system, so that we can travel to any school or organization.”
