Fifth Third Field to Host MVDSA Buddy Walk

Dayton, Ohio-The 14th Annual Miami Valley Down Syndrome Association (MVDSA) Dayton Buddy Walk® will take place at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, September 17th beginning at 8:30 a.m. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, which is one of over 250 Walks across the country this fall to raise awareness and funds for programs that benefit people with Down syndrome and their families.

The National Buddy Walk® Program welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. The goals of the program are to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and to positively influence local and national policy and practice. Last year alone, Buddy Walk® events raised nearly $13 million to benefit national advocacy initiatives, as well as local programs and services. All funds raised through the National Buddy Walk® Program support both local and national programs.

The MVDSA Dayton Buddy Walk® will feature something fun for everyone – exhibitors, activities, inflatables, a basket raffle, a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and more! Activities around the ballpark begin at 8:30 a.m. The Entertainment Fun Zone will be open with face painters and a photo booth. Dragons mascots Heater and Gem will roam the concourse and take pictures with those in attendance. Individuals with Down syndrome will receive a medal as they complete the walk. Louisville Slugger Field to host Miracle League Kick-Off Event

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Miracle League and the Louisville Bats organization have partnered together for a special event at Louisville Slugger Field. This event is for all to meet and greet current Louisville Bat Jermaine Curtis and learn more about the Miracle League. Curtis will be meeting and signing autographs at the FREE Miracle League kick-off event at Louisville Slugger Field from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 11.

The Miracle League is a baseball complex for children with physical, cognitive and/or emotional disabilities to play in an organized baseball league. The event will have raffle drawings along with a free hat giveaway to all veterans and first responders as the Miracle League will recognize their service on September 11.

OKC Dodgers to Host Free Car Seat Check Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Dodgers, the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, and Safe Kids Oklahoma are teaming up to sponsor a free car seat check from 9 a.m. – noon Saturday, Sept. 10 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Child Passenger Safety Week runs Sept. 18-24, but organizations such as the Dodgers are hosting events throughout the month of September to benefit the campaign, which is dedicated to helping parents and caregivers make sure their children ride as safely as possible, every trip, every time.

Certified technicians will be on hand to install car seats and booster seats, and to check previously installed seats, at no charge. Car seats will also be available for $10 for those who can provide proof of government assistance. To receive a car seat check or be eligible to receive a car seat, the child must be present and an expectant mother must be within six weeks of delivery.

“The Dodgers are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and offer free car seat checks to the Oklahoma City community,” OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said. “OHSO is among the leaders in communicating important safety measures to the public, and their partnership with Safe Kids in organizing these events further shows what an asset they are to our state.”

Technicians will be stationed just east of Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the Joe Carter Lot, located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Joe Carter Avenue and East Reno Avenue, on Saturday.

“It’s our job to keep our children safe,” Devon Sisson, director of Safe Kids Oklahoma, said. “Get your car seats checked. Make certain they’re installed correctly, that your kids are in the right seats and are buckled in correctly. Even if you think your child is safe, check again, so you can be sure that your child is the safest he or she can be while traveling.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends keeping children in rear-facing seats as long as possible. Once the child outgrows the rear-facing seat size limits, the child is ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness and tether. After outgrowing that type of seat, children should be placed in booster seats until they are the right size to use seat belts safely.

2nd Annual Clash of Cans Food Drive

AUGUSTA, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets, Single-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, have announced the 2nd Annual Clash of Cans Food Drive as a part of the festivities for Thursday, August 25th that will benefit the Golden Harvest Food Bank. The GreenJackets will host the Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) with the playoff chase heating up.

“We invite the CSRA to come out in force, bring lots of canned food items and celebrate with us”, stated GreenJackets General Manager Tom Denlinger. “This is a fun way to interact with the local colleges and universities, while also supporting a great organization.”

The GreenJackets are asking local university alumni and students such as the Augusta University, Augusta Technical College, Brenau University, East Georgia State College, Georgia Military College, University of Georgia, Georgia Southern University, Paine College, University of South Carolina, and Clemson University to compete in the Clash of Cans food drive. Current students and alumni are encouraged to participate in the Clash of Cans as a friendly competition for bragging rights of your school. Rome Braves partner with local Law Enforcement benefiting LA flood victims

Local leaders in law enforcement are saddened by continuous reports of flooding in Louisiana and are calling on the public to help deliver assistance to families displaced by flood waters.

The Rome Braves will be assisting in the effort and will open the parking lot across from State Mutual Stadium, where officers will be posted to accept donations. Police and deputies will be on hand to help with unloading of supplies and make the event more convenient for contributors.

The event is scheduled to begin Thursday August 25, 2016 and continue through Saturday August 27, 2016 with hours of 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. every day.

The Rome Braves will also give away two free tickets for Sunday’s game to every car as a special thank you to the public. Tickets will be available while supplies last.

Benefiting Louisiana with Uniformed Encouragement

“The people of Louisiana are reeling from the loss to their state so it’s important for us to bring a unified front of kindness,” said Floyd County Chief Bill Shiflett. “Those folks really need our help and I believe this is a great demonstration of love.”

According to statistics provided by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, more than 40,000 homes have been damaged and approximately 30,000 were rescued from their homes. All of those people are in need of fundamental supplies we take for granted, Shiflett said.

“The flooding in Louisiana brings back painful memories of Katrina for many,” said Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter. “Though we cannot take the hurt and pain of the past away, we can do something to help soften the blow for the more than 100,000 people who have registered for assistance.

Chief Denise Downer-McKinney, of the Rome City Police Department, says events like this are uplifting for all: “With all the support we have received from our community, we want to pay it forward to the community and our brothers and sisters in Louisiana.”

AutoMax Rent-a-Car is donating use of a truck to use during the drop off this week and Scott Logistics will be shipping the supplies at no cost from Rome to Louisiana.

Officials are asking for donations of toiletries, cleaning supplies, baby formula, diapers, paper products, new underwear in the pack, bath towels, wash cloths, laundry detergent, bleach, lotion, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, body wash, and feminine hygiene products.

Michael Edwards Awarded FSL Scholarship

Daytona Beach, FL – The Daytona Tortugas, in conjunction with the Florida State League and the Miami Marlins, are proud to award the franchise’s second Florida State League Scholarship to Account Executive Michael Edwards.

Edwards, a native of nearby DeLand, is prepping for his junior year at the University of Florida.

“It means a lot [to win the scholarship]. I appreciate the opportunity to earn a scholarship, and winning it meant even more since it is the first scholarship I’ve ever been chosen for,” Edwards explained.

The Florida State League Scholarship Committee awarded twelve (12) $1,500 educational scholarships to applicants from each team in the league. The award is based both on financial need and a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students eligible for this award must be an employee, or the child or grandchild of an employee, of the participating club and must be at least a high school junior by the 2016 fall term.

“I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to gain experience [with the Tortugas]. Working in the front office of a sports team is what I eventually hope to be doing,” said Edwards, a sports management major, about the internship.

The Miami Marlins have sponsored this program for more than 16 years and have contributed over $160,000 to the Florida State League Program.

The Daytona Tortugas honored Edwards prior to a home game on July 25th at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. In addition, he was also mentioned during a pre-game ceremony at the Miami Marlins game on Sunday, July 31st, along with the other Florida State League team award winners.

Edwards, now back at school, enjoyed his summer in the FSL.

“It was great! I learned a good amount and got to do things that I never expected to be doing. It was definitely tiring at times, but working through those long homestands will help me in the long run!”

Cougars To Host Peanut-Free Night on July 13

GENEVA, Ill. – The Kane County Cougars have announced that Wednesday, July 13 will be Peanut-Free Night when they host the West Michigan Whitecaps in a 6:30 p.m. game at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The game will not include the sale of peanuts or any peanut-related products to allow fans with peanut allergies the opportunity to safely attend a Cougars game.

Beginning in 2007, the Cougars have hosted their annual Peanut-Free Night for the last nine years for families of children with peanut allergies. Peanut allergies are one of the most common food allergies and can cause a severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction. In addition to peanuts, the following items will also not be available for fans to purchase on July 13: Dippin’ Dots, Oberweis ice cream, Oreo churros, Cracker Jacks, candy including plain and peanut M&M’s, as well as cookies and brownies.

Fans are asked to visit Guest Services located on the third base concourse with questions regarding the food and the ingredients they contain in relation to Peanut Free Night.

Cutters Offer MedReturn at Wednesday Games

Lycoming County District Attorney’s office has teamed up with the Williamsport Crosscutters to give fans the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted or expired household medication.

Officials will be in attendance with the MedReturn box to collect medication at every Cutters Wednesday home game. Collection dates are June 22, July 13, August 3, August 10 and August 31.

Lycoming County District Attorney Eric Linhardt stated, “The best way to avoid the risks of prescription drug abuse, especially for children and teenagers, is to safely dispose of medications when they are unused or expired. The Pennsylvania MedReturn drop boxes offer the public a safe, accessible, and convenient alternative to keeping prescription drugs that aren’t being used in the home where they can get in the wrong hands or be disposed of in landfills or down the drain where they can end up in the water supply.

All fans turning in medication will receive a coupon for a free hot dog and soda, courtesy of the District Attorney’s office, redeemable at any Cutters home game during the 2016 season.

“We are pleased to assist the D.A’s office in helping get as many unused prescriptions as possible out of homes and safely disposed,” stated Gabe Sinicropi, Cutters Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations.

6th Annual Cutters 5K to Benefit CDC

The Williamsport Crosscutters, in partnership with the Children’s Development Center, will be holding the 6th Annual Cutters 5K on Saturday, June 25th at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.

The race, through Williamsport’s West End, begins at 9am with registration open at 8am. The course has runners starting outside the ballpark entrance with the final sprint inside the stadium finishing at home plate. Both runners and walkers are encouraged to take part in the event.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Children’s Development Center of Williamsport. Since 1923, the CDC has been providing services to children with special needs from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s event attracted almost 200 participants. Since its inception, almost $60,000 has been raised for the CDC through this event.

“Hope Enterprises and its Children’s Development Center strive every day to accomplish its mission of serving children and their families in this area. Due to the tremendous community support Hope has received over the years, we are able to meet the very specific needs of those we serve. As an example of that support, we are extremely proud and fortunate to partner with the Williamsport Crosscutters and their 5K run” stated Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female runners will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game on July 1st. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers. The event will also feature a new Kids Fun Run, free for children age 10 and under. All kids participating will receive an award.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC annually on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi.

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the July 1st Crosscutters vs. Batavia MuckDogs game at 7:05pm. Cutters Raise over $5,000 for James V. Brown Library

The Williamsport Crosscutters kicked of their tenth season with the Philadelphia Phillies with their annual Hot Stove Banquet on January 18 at the Genetti Hotel in downtown Williamsport.

The event featured Phillies manager Pete Mackanin and catcher Cameron Rupp in addition to Cutters manager and former World Series MVP Pat Borders and Japanese baseball legend Tom O’Malley. The guests entertained attendees with stories, answered audience questions and signed autographs.

In talking about the 2016 Phillies, Mackanin stated, “We experimented last year. This year is the other half of the experiment. I think we’re starting to build some depth to where we’re going to be pretty good.”

The night, presented in part by Woodlands Bank, WRAK Radio and the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, was also highlighted by auctions that featured a wealth of sports memorabilia including a special Phillies VIP Game Experience, an autographed giant Phanatic bobblehead and a full uniform worn by Tom O’Malley as a hitting coach for the Hanshin Tigers in 2014.

Another highlight of the event was the induction of the 2001 Williamsport Crosscutters team into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. The team, managed by Tony Beasley, had a record of 48-26. After losing game one of the NYPL Championship Series to the Brooklyn Cyclones, the remainder of the series was canceled due to the tragic events of September 11th. Brooklyn and Williamsport were declared co-champions, marking the first championship for a Williamsport professional team since 1960. A total of eight players from that squad went on to play in the major leagues including former Pirates outfielder Chris Duffy who returned to Williamsport for the event.

A portion of the proceeds from the evening were donated to the James V. Brown Library whose mission is, “To enable people to be the best they can be, to grow, to learn and to enjoy their lives while learning”. At the conclusion of the festivities, the library was presented with a check for $5,025.

E-Twins Look To Impact Area Youth

Minor League Baseball has much to offer all age groups but this season E-Twins staff are focusing on youth with a variety of promotions and stadium ticket packages. “We are extremely excited about this season and the impact we can have on our area youth,” said Mike Mains, General Manager. “We have put together a nice package of promotions for all ages but especially for our youth as we hope parents will notice the inexpensive family entertainment that they can enjoy this summer at Joe O’Brien Field.”

With hundreds of local youth participating in baseball and softball programs throughout our area the Twins are offering free youth team baseball and softball parties at Joe O’Brien Field. Admission is free to all players and coaches and parents will enter at a discounted rate of $3.00. In addition to free admission, teams will be announced during pre-game ceremonies and they will take the field during the National Anthem with the E-Twins.

Throughout this season the E-Twins have scheduled several weekly promotions that will give families an opportunity to enjoy an inexpensive night at the ballpark including Tuesday Dollar Nights and Kids Eat Free Wednesday’s. Sponsored by UDC and WCQR Tuesday Dollar Nights will feature $1.00 admission for all along with $1.00 hotdogs, programs and a few other concession items all sold for $1.00. While Wednesday night games this season will feature a free meal for all kids under the age of twelve.

Continuing a long standing tradition the Elizabethton Twins will host two free baseball clinics for area youth including the Todd Walker Baseball Clinic held at Joe O’Brien Field on July 11 and the Blue Gray’s Baseball Clinic held at Historic Blue Grays Field located at Douglas Park on August 1st. Youth between the ages of 6 and 14 will receive instruction in baseball fundamentals, meet E-Twins players and lunch will be provided.

Joe O’Brien Field has much to offer including a great setting for birthday parties and a unique family fun package which offers four reserved seats, four hotdogs with drinks, four programs and one individual in the family will be allowed to throw out the first pitch. This special package will provide a great night of baseball fun and memories for years to come.

The Elizabethton Junior Twins Club is another youth program the E-Twins are proud of. Club membership offers a reduce rate for a season ticket pass to all 34 home games, a Twins tee-shirt and an invitation to a pre-game cookout with E-Twins players.

“The Elizabethton Twins have a great deal to offer our youth,” said Mike Mains. “When you look at the number of families that have kids in this area participating in youth sports its really amazing and then you have this team that is a showcase of future major league stars it’s really special. NYPL Charitable Foundation Scholarship Returns For 2015

2015 Scholarship Application

The New York-Penn League and its clubs are pleased to announce that the NYPL Charitable Foundation will award over $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding high school graduates once again in 2015.

For the seventh year, the NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school in the surrounding areas of each of the league’s 14 teams. Any student who has been accepted to a two or four-year college, university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and the impact of their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball on their lives.

The contest consists of two stages – a local and divisional round. Applicants begin by applying to their local NYPL team. From those applicants, one winner will be chosen and will become a finalist for the divisional round. The 14 divisional round winners will be separated by the three NYPL Divisions, (McNamara, Pinckney, and Stedler) with the winner of each division winning a $2,500 scholarship. All other local round winners will receive a $250 prize.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are pleased to have the opportunity to assist outstanding high school seniors within our league’s footprint for the sixth consecutive season,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “This program will again recognize those seniors who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but demonstrate the positive community impact and lifelong memories fostered by their local NYPL clubs throughout the year.”

High school seniors in the Harford County-area interested in entering the 2015 NYPL Scholarship Contest can pick up an official application at Ripken Stadium at 873 Long Drive, Aberdeen, MD 21001, or by visiting ironbirdsbaseball.com. Applications must be completed and submitted to the students’ local NYPL affiliate by Friday, June 26, 2015.

Each club’s outstanding student, including the three $2,500 scholarship winners, will be selected in late July and honored at a game in August.

The New York-Penn League and its 14 member clubs created the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in 2003. The Foundation’s mission is to provide focus and support for the collective and individual charitable and community efforts of the New York-Penn League, its Clubs, and their staff.

Salem Red Sox, Feeding America Team Up for Food Drive

Fans urged to become someone’s superhero on Superhero Night

SALEM, Va. – The Salem Red Sox have announced a partnership with Feeding America of Southwest Virginia that includes a food drive to be held on Superhero Night, Saturday, May 23, when the Red Sox take on the Winston-Salem Dash.

Fans are asked to bring non-perishable food items to LewisGale Field when they arrive for the 6 p.m. contest. The Sox and Feeding America are encouraging fans to bring a box of macaroni and cheese (or other boxed pasta) to serve as a noisemaker during the game and then donate to Feeding America after the game.

Tickets for the game are available at salemsox.com. Fans who pre-purchase their tickets online not only will save $2 over the walk-up price, but will be able to donate $2 to Feeding America by using the promo code: FOOD.

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Kernels Foundation are pleased to announce Niki Sharma as the winner of the 2015 Nick Adenhart Memorial Scholarship. She was recognized in an on-field ceremony before the Kernels game with Peoria on Wednesday, May 13th.

Niki is a member of the Class of 2015 at Linn-Mar High School where her school activities, academic accomplishments and accomplishments in basketball and track were quite impressive, making her an excellent choice for the scholarship. Claire plans on attending Washington University in St. Louis as a pre-med student.

Nick Adenhart was a bright young pitcher who played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2006, and was a rising star in the Los Angeles Angels organization. Only hours after Nick’s 2009 season debut on the mound for the Angels, a drunk driver tragically killed him on April 9, 2009 at age 22.

Nick’s family continues to honor him with the awarding of a $1,000 scholarship in his memory. The Kernels Foundation is privileged to administer the scholarship on behalf of Nick’s family.

The Kernels continue a seven game home stand on Thursday, May 14th with a 6:35 PM game against the Peoria Chiefs, the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The current home stand continues through Sunday, May 17th.
