Bowl with your favorite player in first ever bowling event

Harrisburg, PA – What could be more fun than bowling with your favorite Harrisburg Senators player, nothing! The good news for all of you bowlers and just people that enjoy bowling, you’re in luck! On Sunday, July 22, the Senators are Bowling For Kids’ Sake.

Following the game that day against New Britain at 2:00 p.m., the Senators head to the Red Crown Bowling Center.  The bowling event takes place from 7:00 p.m. to approximately 9:00 p.m.  Each participant bowls two games with a player or member of the coaching staff.  The cost is $40 per person, $100 for a team of three or $130 for a team of four. The cost includes your shoe rental, two games of bowling, food, and drinks. The event benefits the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region.

In addition to the bowling, a raffle will take place throughout the event. Each raffle ticket is $2 or a baseball bat length for $20.  The list of items is growing and all of the proceeds benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region.

This event will sell out quickly, so be sure to purchase your tickets quickly for this unique opportunity to spend time bowling with your favorite player!  Tickets are available online here or by phoning the Harrisburg Senators at 717-231-4444 and asking for Emily Winslow.

Tickets for Senators’ games are available on game days 10:00 a.m. until the end of the game, and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until the end of the game. Box office hours on non-game days are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available via telephone during the same hours as the box office hours. Tickets are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, online at www.senatorsbaseball.com.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Night set for May 18th

The Clearwater Threshers are proud to bring back Prostate Cancer Awareness Night on Friday, May 18. The team will once again be wearing special blue jerseys, many of which will be available for purchase in a silent auction during the game.

Additionally, the first 1,000 guests through the gates for the 6:30pm matchup versus Jupiter will receive a special blue Threshers hat sponsored by First Priority. Gates open at 5:30pm.

After the game is over, winning bidders of the auction will be able to meet the player on-field and have them sign the jersey. Proceeds will go to the Morton Plant Mease Foundation and the Ed Randall “Bat for the Cure” program, as we work together to help stop prostate cancer in its tracks.

Once the auction and jersey presentations are complete, everyone in attendance is invited to take part in a special concert brought to you by the Black Honkeys!

Bark in the Park with Paws for Claws

Humans and Hounds alike, join us at State Mutual Stadium for the Bark in the Park game on Sunday May 27. This season the Rome Braves are partnering with Claws for Paws to help the homeless pets of Rome and Floyd County. All of the money raised by Claws for Paws goes directly back to animal rescue efforts in the local community.

The festivities begin at 2pm but you can register today. There will be a 1.3 mile Dog Walk around State Mutual Stadium followed by pet contests, a Frisbee Dog Demo and stop by the Flealess Market throughout the day. Then bring your dog into the ballpark and cheer on the Rome Braves for the 5pm game.

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium – Vancouver, BC) – When Andrew Von Rosen heard the word ‘sold’ at the 2nd Annual Scotiabank Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation Hot Stove Luncheon back in February, he knew he was about to get the experience of a lifetime.

One of the Canadians live auction items that was in place to help raise funds for the newly-formed Vancouver Canadians Baseball League was a trip for two to Toronto to see the Blue Jays welcome the Texas Rangers.

The series itself did not disappoint with Andrew getting the chance to see Langley, B.C. native Brett Lawrie hit a game-winning, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning on May 1st against the defending American League champions.

“Without question that was one of the highlights,” says Andrew who is a lifelong baseball fan.

On the field, Andrew and his guest got to see Rangers pitching sensation RHP Yu Darvish who outpitched Blue Jays arm RHP Kyle Drabek in a hard fought 4-1 victory for Texas.

The next night the Blue Jays fell behind 5-0 early before Toronto fought back with Lawrie’s heroics capping off a 7-6 victory.

Andrew’s final day saw Rogers Centre open up the roof to reveal piercing sunshine and an offensive explosion for the Jays and they topped the Rangers 11-5 to take the three-game series.

“To get to see the dome both open and closed was great. It is like two completely different stadiums”.

Aside from Toronto and the Rangers exchanging pleasantries on the field, Andrew got to see the Blue Jays organization from behind the scenes including a tour of Rogers Centre, a meet and greet with broadcasters Pat Tabler and Buck Martinez as well as dinner at the exclusive VIP Club located right behind home plate.

The total package included flight, accommodation, tickets to all three games vs. Texas, dinner at the VIP Club and a team autographed Blue Jays jersey along with all the ‘behind the scene’ elements which included a viewing of the 1992 and 1993 World Series trophies.

Andrew’s hotel room overlooked the field at Rogers Centre while one of his highlights was getting a tour of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s National Headquarters just steps away from Rogers Centre.

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation would like to thank Andrew Von Rosen for bidding on this exciting trip. Thanks to his generosity, more than 20 local children will have the chance to play baseball this summer out at historic Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium in the Vancouver Canadians Baseball League.

Spinners host Coaches vs. Cancer, May 12

LOWELL, MASS. – Baseball is back at LeLacheur Park in a pre-season feature as the Lowell Spinners season approaches. The Spinners, in conjunction with Acton Boxboro High School Varsity Baseball Team, will host the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer exhibition between the Colonials and the visiting Easton (Penn.) Rovers at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12.

The game will be played under the lights at LeLacheur, starting with a pre-game tribute at 6 p.m.

The game holds a special significance to the Acton community and is the first ever baseball game for the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic after a number of other events last winter. The game will honor a former AB player, Brian Fowler, who passed away after a battle with leukemia after graduating. Brian’s father, Charlie, who provides a yearly scholarship in his son’s name will be in attendance with many of Brian’s family and friends for a special pre-game tribute.

“As an organization we are committed to being the community team,” said Spinners President and General Manager Tim Bawmann. “This is an incredible event to get behind and we are honored to host it at LeLacheur Park.”

Admission to the game is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Children 10 and under and Senior Citizens are admitted free of charge. The concessions stands will be open and a special silent auction of sports memorabilia will take place during the game with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers athletic coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of athletic coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.

Current Philadelphia Phillies hitting coach and former R-Phils hitting coach Greg Gross is once again bringing his ALS Auction to FirstEnergy Stadium this season with a handful of great items that you won’t find anywhere else.

This Saturday, May 5, the R-Phils along with Gross will once again hold this great event at America’s Classic Ballpark when the team takes on the Erie SeaWolves at 6:05 p.m. The night also features one of the first post-game fireworks shows of 2012 thanks to Carpenter Technology Corporation.

During his time with Philadelphia (1979-1988), Gross began working to help fight ALS and remained dedicated to the battle. ALS is cause near and dear to the world of baseball and is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the New York Yankees Hall of Famer who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939.

VIST Financial Plaza gates open at 4:05 p.m. and fans are encouraged to check out some great autographed memorabilia. All fans will have the opportunity to bid on these great auction items. Below is a list of the items that will be up for auction:

Tigers Partner With UCP to Help New London Resident

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers and United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Eastern Connecticut have joined together to help New London resident and former Assistant Waterford Baseball Coach Michael Loper raise funds to help make his home more accessible. Loper, a client of UCP, has been unable to live an active life since undergoing spinal fusion surgery eight years ago to help relieve symptoms of Cerebral Palsy. He and members of the Connecticut Tigers Front Office staff will be selling tickets to the Tigers game on Saturday, July 21 against Lowell at 7:05 p.m. at the Waterford Little League South Opening Day this Saturday, April 28. The ticket sales will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the field on Gardiner’s Wood Road. Half of all ticket sales will go to helping Michael’s cause.

Tickets are currently available at the following locations around Eastern Connecticut: Sportee’s in Waterford, (262 Boston Post Road # 9); Picardi’s Pub in Waterford, (120 Boston Post Road); and at Angie’s Pizza in Mystic (25 Roosevelt Avenue). “This is something we’re really pushing for Michael’s benefit,” said Bussolotti, Disability Support Coordinator at UCP of Eastern Connecticut. “With Michael’s love of baseball and his history with the sport, we’re really committed to making this project a success.”

Michael will also be available along with members of UCP at the game on July 21 to take donations and talk with fans interested in helping his cause. The Tigers will also hold a ceremonial first pitch on July 21 honoring individuals that helped Michael’s fundraising effort.

The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League. The Tigers saw a 23% increase in attendance in 2011 (the 4th highest in Minor League Baseball), and will open their third season at Dodd Stadium on June 20 against the Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. First Annual SCLC Golf Tournament a Success

PULASKI, VA – Last Friday at the Pulaski Country Club was a jam-packed, fun-filled day of golf, silent auctions, food, and chances to interact with standout athletes with roots in Southwest Virginia. Billy Wagner and Shayne Graham were on hand throughout most of the morning to promote the Second Chance Learning Center (SCLC) charity and to meet-and-greet with participants in the morning and throughout the early afternoon.The winning team from the entire tournament consisted of Kenny Myers, Matt Williams, Butch White, and John Hawley. The foursome finished with a score of 56 to win the tournament, but the biggest win of the day was raising over $6,400 for the Second Chance Learning Center.

“The day was an all-around success,” said Mariner’s GM Abby Lyman. “We achieved much more than we anticipated, but more importantly we raised awareness for a great cause.” Lyman went on to say, “We appreciate Billy and Shayne’s participation, and look forward to partnering with them and the SCLC in the future.”

The tournament featured two separate tee times, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Great weather allowed for an outside silent auction that featured items from the Pulaski and Seattle Mariners, all of the other Appalachian League teams, memorabilia from Billy Wagner, and other assorted items.

Wagner, a Southwest Virginia native, played in the Major Leagues for 16 seasons with five different teams and was a 7-time All-Star. Graham, as a placekicker, played collegiate football for Virginia Tech and also graduated from Pulaski County High School. He has played in parts of 11 seasons for seven NFL teams, most notably the Cincinnati Bengals.

The SCLC currently features locations in Bluefield and Tazewell, with plans for a future Pulaski location being discussed. The SCLC offers free tutoring, mentoring, and counseling for middle and high school students with educational and social needs.

The Pulaski Mariners would like to thank all participants, sponsors, and everyone who donated to the tournament that helped make the day’s events possible and such a tremendous success.

Grizzlies To Host Inaugural Golf Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Grizzlies will host their inaugural golf outing on Wednesday, June 6th and is scheduled to be played at Copper River Country Club. The event, presented by Crown Jewels Produce and the Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund (GCF), will benefit the Fresno Community Food Bank and the GCF. Grizzlies fans will enjoy a round of golf with friends, co-workers, and business associates while supporting two local non-profit organizations. The field is limited to 144 golfers or 36 teams of four members.

Participants in the outing will also have the opportunity to golf alongside Fresno Grizzlies players and coaches at the event. There are a limited number of players and coaches participating, however, so it is recommended golfers register for the event early, as groups will be formed on a first come, first serve basis.

In addition to the 18 holes of golf, registration also includes lunch before the tournament, a bucket of range balls, free beverages provided at holes 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15, a post-tournament mixer with drinks and hors d’oeuvres, team photo, and sponsored giveaway items.

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium – Vancouver, BC) – When nearly 30 young, bright-eyed children began running through the aisles at the 2nd Annual Scotiabank Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation Hot Stove Luncheon, the show had officially been stolen.

Friday afternoon, the Canadians hosted their annual Hot Stove Luncheon which featured Toronto Blue Jays President and CEO Paul Beeston who was overwhelmed by the support shown by the sold out crowd all tucked inside the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel in downtown Vancouver.

“I’m speechless,” said Beeston who’s keynote address tipped largely toward his organization’s support of the Vancouver Canadians.

“What Jake, Jeff and Andy have done here in Vancouver is unbelievable. The way Vancouver has supported this team is something that should become a blueprint for other teams at any level of baseball”.

The afternoon program kicked off with Canadians owner Jake Kerr giving the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation membership his ‘State of the Franchise’ address which included his praise to the Toronto Blue Jays for delivering on their promise to make Vancouver a Northwest League Champion.

Kerr was followed by longtime friend and co-owner Jeff Mooney who gripped the sold out venue with a stirring story and introduction of the newly-formed Vancouver Canadians Baseball League, a 28-team, eight-game season built for kids between the ages of 5-10. Mooney announced that the Canadians through their Foundation would support nearly 300 local children in need each summer.

Included in the commitment is league fees, transportation, food and all equipment covered by both the Canadians and a host of corporate sponsors including Scotiabank, BC Hydro and The Sports Exchange. A number of local supporters also worked to give these children a summer to remember including Al DeGenova and the Mooney Family. Jeff Mooney and Suzanne Bolton donated $50,000.00 toward the Foundation to kick-off the afternoon.

Just before Mooney wrapped up his request to help support the VCBF, he trotted out 28 bright-eyed, excited children in full uniform all there to give our guests a high-five and ask for their support this summer.

Smiles filled the room as the kids from The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vancouver dazzled with plenty of energy to spare and high-fives to go around to each and every guest. It was one of the most talked about elements of the afternoon.

The stage then became Paul Beeston’s who promised to keep building back in Toronto and committed to tell the story of the Vancouver Canadians who had ‘blown him away’ with what they had been able to accomplish within the community.

The afternoon wrapped up with a Live Auction that exceeded the hopes of the Canadians organization thanks to the generous support of our membership.

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club, Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation and Scotiabank would like to thank each and every person associated with the Foundation for a fantastic afternoon that ensured more than 300 children from our own community got the chance to play baseball this coming summer.

Salem Will Donate $3,159 Raised During Annual Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame Banquet

Salem, VA (February 1, 2012) – The Salem Red Sox, Advanced Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will donate $3,159 to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Roanoke, a non-profit organization that provides mentoring organizations serving children, their families, and communities. Since its inception in 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters operates in all 50 states and 13 countries around the world.On Thursday, January 26, 2012, the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame held their annual banquet at the Salem Civic Center. The Salem Red Sox held an auction during the event with items donated from local restaurants and businesses, along with national organizations and sporting teams. Items included tickets to a Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees series, as well as local area gift cards, and various baseball memorabilia. Guest speaker, Billy Sample, a Salem native, was in attendance to show support for the four inductees and the cause.

“The Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame Banquet and induction ceremony was a wonderful opportunity for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia. We appreciate the great generosity from the auction proceeds and the support of the Salem Red Sox and all those who made the event very meaningful for us!” stated Marguerite Hansell, Fund Development Associate with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia.

All of the proceeds from the auction went to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia.

“The auction went off without a hitch,” said Todd Stephenson, general manager of the Salem Red Sox, “there were some high bid wars going on, all for a great cause.”

Cutters banquet raises $4,500 for charity

With a star-studded guest list and a jam-packed Genetti Ballroom, the Williamsport Crosscutters 6th Annual Hot Stove Dinner & Auction with the Phillies was a great success while raising $4,500 for charity.

On a cold winter night in Williamsport, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, Jr, former Phillie Andy Tracy, former Phillies GM Ed Wade and others entertained attendees with stories and answered audience questions.

Tracy, who will manage the Crosscutters in 2012, discussed his excitement about his first year as a manager this summer in Williamsport and helping young players advance through the Phillies farm system. In talking about ending his playing days after the 2011 season, he remarked, “I was ready to enter the next phase of my baseball career.”

The night, presented by HB Rentals, Woodlands Bank, WRAK Radio and the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, was also highlighted by live and Chinese auctions that featured a wealth of sports memorabilia including a bat signed by Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco, baseballs signed by Phils catcher Carlos Ruiz, hall-of-famers Goose Gossage, Rod Carew, Jim Rice and many others.

Other highlights of the event included the induction of Dave Bresnahan into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. Bresnahan played for the Double-A Williamsport Bills in 1987 and gained national and worldwide notoriety for his trick play that involved using a potato instead of a baseball in a game that season against the Reading Phillies.

At the event, Bresnahan entertained the audience by describing in detail the trick play and it’s planning. The play was ruled illegal and Bresnahan was released by the parent Cleveland Indians the next day. He made numerous TV and radio appearances across the nation in the days, weeks and years following the stunt which has been dubbed “The Great Potato Caper”.

A portion of the proceeds from the evening were donated to Andrew’s Special Kids Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to “Provide special needs children with every opportunity in life which will enable them to reach their full potential by providing them with adaptive equipment, special education opportunities, safety equipment, therapies and financial assistance for out of state travel.”

At the conclusion of the festivities, Dean & Amy Kriebel the founders of the charity along with their son Andrew, accepted a check for $4,500 to help the charity and its mission.

Non-profits invited to participate in the Community Organization of the Night program with the Legends!

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) The Lexington Legends are inviting non-profit organizations to participate in their Community Organization of the Night program during the 2012 season.

The Community Organization of the Night program, sponsored by Waffle House, offers non-profits a variety of opportunities to publicize their work at Whitaker Bank Ballpark and on Legends radio broadcasts during each of the Legends’ 70 home games. Hundreds of organizations throughout central and eastern Kentucky have participated.

“The Legends place a huge emphasis on being a strong community partner,” said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. “With that in mind, it’s really the least we can do to open up our facility each and every game and allow 70 unique non-profit organizations the opportunity to spread their message and raise awareness among the thousands of Legends fans that come through our gates each year. We’re so pleased to continue this program, and we thank Waffle House for their continued support as the title sponsor of our Community Organization of the Night program.”

Organizations may set up a display on the concourse, where they can greet fans and distribute information. Before the game, a representative of each Community Organization of the Night throws a ceremonial first pitch and is interviewed on the public address system. The representative also is a guest on the radio broadcast for a half-inning during the game. Each organization receives four complimentary tickets to their game. Solicitation is not permitted.

Game dates will be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please download and fill out the 2012 CON Registration Form and send the completed form to Sarah Piester, the Legends Director of Community Relations and Special Events. The Legends, a Class A affiliate of the Houston Astros, will open their home season April 12 against the Kannapolis Intimidators at 7:05pm with a Legends Poster Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans through the gates, along with $1 Beers & Pepsi and a postgame Ford Firework Show.

Staten Islanders Take the Plunge

The 5th Annual Staten Island Polar Bear Plunge was held on December 4th 2011 at the Great Kills Beach.  While the sun was shining and the temperature sat at a brisk 53 degrees, the water in the Atlantic Ocean still ran shivers down your spine.

This event was a fundraiser to raise money for the Special Olympics of New York that serves more than 30,000 athletes across all 5 New York boroughs. While the crowd varied from the youngest plunger of 11 years old, to high school participants, adults, athletes, college students and community volunteers, more than 700 people took the plunge at noon into the icy ocean.  Some participants dipped their toes in while others fully submerged and continued to splash around in the water after the initial plunge was over.

Among the participants were Jill Wright of the Staten Island Yankees who did not wear a wetsuit for fear of cheating and made sure to dive into the ocean like a true sport and supporter of the Special Olympics. While Jill was the only brave heart of the Staten Island Yankees to take the plunge, other volunteers helped take pictures, run registration, and set up and break down the event. Volunteers included: Michael Kitlas, John DeLuca, Heidi Silber, Matt Magnani, Ryan Woodley, Chris Anderson, Kerry Haley and of course, Scooter the Holy Cow.

The event was expected to raise over $100,000 and fun was had by all.

IronPigs Charities Annual Report Released

The 201l IronPigs Charities annual report details all of the club’s initiatives from this past year. IronPigs Charities donated $106,000 to local non-profits over the last year, the highest yearly contribution to date.

Established in October, 2007, before the IronPigs ever played a game, IronPigs Charities was created to provide educational and recreational opportunities for Lehigh Valley Youth.
