Syracuse Mets and Onondaga County Team Up to Provide Free COVID-19 Rapid Testing for Fans to Attend Syracuse Mets Games

April 26, 2021

SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse Mets and Onondaga County are partnering to provide free COVID-19 rapid testing at NBT Bank Stadium for fans during the 2021 season. New York State guidelines require fans to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test prior to entry. This rapid test that will be provided by Onondaga County at NBT Bank Stadium will fulfill the testing requirement set forth by New York State.

Testing will take place on the day of Syracuse Mets home games Tuesday through Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. There are no games on Mondays this season. This gameday testing is available for fans who are attending the Syracuse Mets game on the same day. Fans will need to register in advance at https://covid19.ongov.net/appointments/testing-registration-form/

The tests will be administered outside NBT Bank Stadium in clearly marked areas. All fans will be directed to an initial screening area. Those already with proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test will proceed to one of the gates clearly marked for entry into the stadium. Fans without proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test will be directed to the testing tent where they will check in, get tested, and wait for the test result. After receiving proof of a negative test, those fans can then proceed to the one of the entrance gates. Fans should plan accordingly as the test may take up to 30 minutes to deliver results.

Since the testing begins more than four hours before all games, fans can come early to get tested and then return later in the day for the game with proof of negative test already in hand.

Fans are encouraged to get proof of a negative COVID-19 test ahead of time in order to reduce the amount of people needing a test at the stadium and the wait time.

Proof of full vaccination is only valid if the individual has received their second Moderna or Pfizer shot, or first Johnson & Johnson shot at least 14 days prior to the event date. Negative COVID-19 tests must be dated within 72 hours of the event if it is a PCR test, or within 6 hours of the event if it is an Antigen test. The Syracuse Mets will be screening fans upon entry to the stadium, including temperature testing.

Tickets for the 2021 Syracuse Mets baseball season are now on sale. Fans can purchase tickets at the Onondaga Coach Ticket Office at NBT Bank Stadium or over the phone during regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or online anytime at syracusemets.com.

Opening Day is scheduled for Tuesday, May 4th at 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium. Please follow the Syracuse Mets on social media or check our website for the most up-to-date information on 2021 Syracuse Mets tickets, promotions, and more.

Appointments required: PLEASE CLICK HERE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

“Summer nights at Frontier Field are a Monroe County tradition that residents and families missed out on in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Red Wings anticipated return on the horizon, now is the time to get your COVID-19 vaccine and ensure you’re able to catch a game at Frontier Field this season,” said Bello. “Vaccination is key to returning to normalcy and enjoying the things we love most about the summer months in Monroe County. We can all end this together, and it starts with the simple act of getting your COVID-19 vaccine.”

“I want to thank County Executive Bello and his staff for arranging this vaccination clinic to be held at Frontier Field. This is a great service to both our fans and employees who recognize the need for the safety the vaccine provides. Proof of vaccination will be the simplest way to gain access to games and other events at Frontier Field, and the more fans – and others – who are vaccinated, the safer we will all be in our community and beyond,” added Silver. “Please get vaccinated and come to a game! Let’s get our lives back to normal! I’d like to see our community be a leader in the effort to get to herd immunity.”

The COVID-19 vaccine is FREE to anyone, regardless of health insurance or coverage. This clinic will offer first-dose Pfizer vaccine, which is approved for anyone 16 years of age and older. Appointments will be required for this vaccine clinic and can be made on the Monroe County scheduling website, https://www.monroecounty.gov/health-covid19-vaccine, or by calling the Monroe County COVID-19 hotline at (585) 753-5555. Indy RBI Ready for Successful 2021 Season

April 19, 2021

Back in the early 1980s, Mike Lennox was experiencing instability in his line of work. Out of college, Lennox worked in the radio business bouncing from station to station, but it did not provide a stable life at home. In his twenties at the time and newly engaged, Lennox transitioned into public relations and marketing work, landing his first job off the airwaves with the Indiana Department of Commerce in its Tourism Development Division. He was a supportive team member for its Wander Indiana campaign that promoted tourism opportunities for the entire state, but the gig still left him unfulfilled.

In the late 80s, Lennox joined the Family Service Association of Indianapolis as its director of development, and it was there where he found his calling. He attended an intense 7-day fundraising course through The Fund Raising School, which is now part of the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, and was mesmerized.

“This is it,” Lennox, the current Executive Director at Indy RBI, remembered thinking at the time. “I quickly learned that I wanted to help raise money for the less fortunate, but the right opportunity just wasn’t there for me yet.”

Insert Milt Thompson, an active member on the Indianapolis Indians Board of Directors. Lennox gives Thompson, who attended the same church as him and became a close friend, a ton of credit for getting him to where he is today.

“Milt knew I wasn’t happy with the work I had been doing, so he told me one day, ‘I’ve got a job for you if you want it.’” Lennox said.

The offer was to help run an inner-city baseball program called the Indiana Amateur Baseball Association, a nonprofit Thompson had originally founded in 1982. Lennox received the offer in March 1996. He accepted, but soon after he experienced one of the biggest hurdles he would have to overcome.

“I went to Lilly Endowment and asked for a $100,000 grant to help get IABA off its feet again. It felt like we were shooting for the moon and this was a make-or-break situation,” Lennox recalled. “Once we received that contribution, we hit the ground running.”

Still in his first year, Lennox was part of IABA’s request to join Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) initiative. It didn’t take long for that approval, and the positive impact on inner-city youth and families – providing every kid the chance to play baseball or softball each summer – has since been noticeable.

“Every kid is given the chance to play, but it’s not just the kids who benefit from our Indy RBI program… truthfully, the parents and mentors to these student-athletes learn a lot about themselves every summer,” Lennox said. “[The parents] grow as individuals and realize that our leagues are not focused on the winning and losing, but rather on the idea of creating major league citizens. We practice good sportsmanship, teamwork, and try to foster positive off-the-field behavior.”

In a normal year, Indy RBI has nearly 2,000 participants in youth baseball and softball for various age groups. Teams play mostly at Forest Manor Park, Rhodius Park, Christian Park and Garfield Park, with many Indianapolis Public School (IPS) and charter school fields used for the older divisions. However, 35% of those approximate 2,000 ballplayers are unable to cover the $25 registration fee, which equates to nearly $15,000 in registration costs covered by Indy RBI alone each summer. That is where partners like Indianapolis Indians Charities, or individuals in the community, have and still can step up to the plate.

Now in his 25th year with Indy RBI, Lennox understands that the organization’s successes aren’t possible without great partners like Indianapolis Indians Charities.

“We were at a disadvantage for years because we do not have a major league team [in Indianapolis],” he said. “The RBI programs in Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis, any city with a major league team, they are funded six figures by those clubs. Fortunately for us, four or five years ago, the Indianapolis Indians increased their support to us to help cover registration fees, uniform costs, field projects and umpire dues.”

And the relationship has only strengthened from there.

Indianapolis Indians Charities recently made a three-year commitment of $300,000 to cover team sponsorships, events and league programming. Also, in partnership with the Indianapolis Parks Department, Indians staff has committed itself to spending Indy Do Day renovating a city park diamond that will be used by Indy RBI and other inner-city schools. In years’ past, staff has volunteered renovating fields at Forest Manor Park and Manual High School. Further, internal work by Indians staff to rework Indy RBI’s website and social channels has not gone unnoticed by Lennox, either.

“Everything Indianapolis Indians Charities and the Indians staff has done over the last couple years has been nothing short of amazing,” he said.

With a season that begins in early May and wraps up with Indy RBI hosting a regional in mid-July, the 2021 season will come and go in the blink of an eye, meaning the time to act – and support – is now.

Indians fans and those wanting to contribute to Indy RBI are encouraged to visit IndyRBI.org and click the ‘donate’ button. A $25 donation will cover the registration fee for one player while a donation of $300 will cover the costs associated with sponsoring an entire team. For those wanting to possibly coach an Indy RBI team or umpire baseball and softball games, email [email protected]. Any volunteer work or monetary donation is of great value to Lennox and his team. After all, Indy RBI has served over 25,000 boys and girls ages 3-18 since 1996, and momentum is picking up as teams are filled and added for the 2021 season.

“We will never turn a child away who wants to play ball,” Lennox said. “We want them to learn fair team play, become major league citizens and enjoy [baseball or softball] their entire lives.”

On top of its support to Indy RBI, IIC also has existing partnerships with the Indy Flames and Indy Thunder.

The Flames participate in Alternative Baseball™, which provides a traditional baseball experience to those with autism and other disabilities, ages 15 and up. The program was founded in Dallas, Ga. by a young man on the autism spectrum. His goal was to develop physical and social skills in an environment where players will be accepted for who they are, encouraged to be the best version of themselves, and instilled with confidence to fulfill their dreams on and off the field. Please email [email protected] or visit alternativebaseball.org for more information.

The Thunder are part of the National Beep Baseball Association, an organization that was founded in 1976 and is committed to fostering competition and camaraderie through the game of beep baseball for the blind and visually impaired. Beep baseball is a challenging, demanding and enjoyable competitive sport that requires a combination of strength, skill and auditory senses to focus on the beeping ball and buzzing bases. Sellers should comfortably handle large cash transactions and credit card machines, as well as the sale and distribution of 50/50 raffle tickets throughout their work shift. They work to engage fans and staff to spread awareness of the 50/50 raffle program. They solve problems quickly and efficiently and answer questions fans may have about the 50/50 raffle program. Ticket sellers are responsible for meeting and/or exceeding designated sales goals per game. Preferred candidates will be available to work a majority of the 70 home games, arriving 1.5 hours prior to game time.

-FAN EXPERIENCE REPRESENTATIVES: The Jumbo Shrimp’s most visible and helpful game day employee, the ideal Fan Experience Representative candidate is outgoing, knowledgeable about the ballpark and its rules and regulations, and enjoys interacting with people and having FUN. The Fan Experience Representatives will be located throughout the ballpark, including entry areas of the stadium. Fan Experience Representatives will also serve as friendly faces in many tasks including assisting fans to their seats, answering any questions guests may have, inspection of bags brought into the ballpark by guests and other tasks as needed. These staff members will also direct entry and exit of guests through areas within the ballpark. Arrival time would be approximately a half-hour before gates open for wiping down and preparing their seating section and last until at least the final out of the game, pending postgame activities.

-GAME DAY CLEAN TEAM: Team members will work throughout the game keeping 121 Financial Ballpark clean. Responsibilities will include keeping the main concourse tidy, responding to spill calls, emptying trash receptacles throughout the game, keeping restrooms clean and stocked with paper products and soap and generally keeping the stadium presentable. Team members will generally arrive a half-hour before the gates open and work through the end of the game, reporting to the stadium operations manager. Candidates may also be considered for non-game day work.

-BAT BOY: Collecting bats from the field is the part you have probably seen at a game, but there is more to the job of a bat boy – from filling water jugs before the game to getting the dugouts prepared and any other duties as assigned by the clubhouse manager. All bat boys must be at least 16 years of age by Opening Day (May 4).

-ID CHECKER: Fans consuming alcohol at Jumbo Shrimp games must first stop by an ID Check station to have their age verified and receive a wrist band from an ID Checker. ID Checkers will arrive at the ballpark a half-hour before gates open, and end time will be based on crowd size and no later than the seventh inning when alcohol sales end.

-PROMOTIONS TEAM: Assist and execute between-inning games, promotional activities, handing out giveaway items, and engaging fans in a FUN manner!

-BIRTHDAY PARTY HOST: The birthday party host will assist in all day-of executions of our birthday party packages at the ballpark. From working with our full-time staff members, to helping prepare the birthday area prior to guest arrival, to greeting and hosting the guests at the ballpark, to cleaning up once the party concludes, the ideal candidate will have an outgoing and upbeat personality with attention to detail and a priority on having FUN at the ballpark a must. The host will work based on birthday party bookings.

Finally, I’m pleased with the Nashville Sounds organization for donating this book to Metro Nashville Public Schools. This is an important part of Black history of which is not currently in books for students. Knowledge is power and the Sounds have helped supply students the power of knowing the complete baseball history in our great city.”

In honor of Black History Month, we will be sharing the history of the Negro Leagues & its players in Nashville throughout February.
