Kernels season-long charity partners raise over $35,000

The Cedar Rapids Kernels partnered with three local companies during the 2014 season to raise over $35,000 for local charities through three different season-long promotions.

For the fifth consecutive season, The Transamerica Foundation has sponsored K’s for Kids, where for every strikeout (or K) recorded by Kernels pitchers this season (home and away, plus playoff games) Transamerica donated $25 to Kids First Law Center for Childr en of Divorce. This season, Kernel pitchers struck out 1,188 batters for a grand total of $29,700 for Kids First. This is the fifth consecutive season that Transamerica has sponsored the K’s for Kids promotion and the highest pledge total to date.

“At Transamerica, we believe in supporting the communities in which we work and live. Since 1994, the Aegon Transamerica Foundation, through a combination of financial grants and the volunteer commitment of our employees, has supported a wide variety of non-profit organizations focused on the education, health and the well-being of community members” said Terrie Rethamel, VP of Specialized Operations with Transamerica. “Our $25 donation for every strikeout pitched by the Cedar Rapids Kernels supports the good work of the Kids First Law Center as they help children and their families through difficult circumstances. We appreciate all that they do to assist families, and consequently, our entire community.”

CarePro Health Services sponsored Plating for Plates, where for every run scored by the Kernels (home and away plus playoffs) CarePro donated $5 to Horizons Meals On Wheels, a program that delivers hot, nutritious meals to local homebound citizens. This season, the Kernels scored 643 runs and that means that CarePro Health Services donated $3,215 or 643 plates of food, to Meals on Wheels. This is the seventh consecutive season that CarePro Health Services has sponsored Plating for Plates.

“It has been a privilege for CarePro Health Services to support the Horizons Meals on Wheels program over the past seven Kernels seasons” said Chris Nichols, Marketing Director at CarePro Health Services. “The Plating for Plates program has been a fun way to be able to support the community and has provided thousands of meals to area community members.”

For the fourth consecutive season, Millhiser Smith Agency, Inc. and West Bend Insurance have partnered to make a donation to Junior Achievement for every home run the Kernels hit at Perfect Game Field this season. In 2014, the Kernels hit 42 home runs and Millhiser Smith and West Bend Insurance donated $2,500 to Junior Achievement.

“One of our fundamental philosophies at Millhiser Smith is to reciprocate the support we receive from Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities – this is why we chose to support Junior Achievement” said Jessica Rhatigan, Risk Consultant with Millhiser Smith Agency, Inc.. “Their focus is on educating our children in preparation for a successful future and we’ve been honored to contribute to their efforts.”

These three companies combined to raise $35,415 for local non-profits in our community this season. The Kernels would like to thank The Transamerica Foundation, CarePro Health Services, Millhiser Smith Agency, Inc. and West Bend Insurance for their continued support of these local charity programs.

Quilting for Veterans donates 60 quilts

Raises $1,260 for local Veterans

Sixty quilts and $1,260 was presented to Don Tyne and Linn County Veterans Affairs as part of Quilts to honor Vets in an on-field ceremony before the Kernels game with Beloit on July 5^th.

The project began on March 8^th as local quilters, organized by Connie Moyer and Connie’s Quilt Shop in Marion, began making quilts at Veterans Memorial Stadium, with 60 quilts produced by June 2nd. Also, a special quilt was made that was raffled off at the July 5^th game, and $1,260 was raised for Linn County Veterans Affairs through the quilt raffle.

The quilts will be given to local veterans in need through Linn County Veterans Affairs and events like Stand Down for Veterans.

“It was my honor to represent all of the quilters who spent their time and talents to make the 60 quilts that were given to Don Tyne to be distributed to local veterans as our way of saying thank you for their service to our country.”, said event organizer Connie Moyer of Connie’s Quilt Shop.

The Kernels begin a three game home stand tonight against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at 6:35 pm with the gates opening at 5:30 pm. The current home stand continues through Thursday, July 10^th.

ACS Relay for Life at Frontier Field July 19-20

Overnight night event returns to Wings’ home

The Rochester Red Wings will host the 2^nd annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life event at Frontier Field from Saturday, July 19 to Sunday, July 20.
The overnight, community walk around the warning track at Frontier Field will begin with opening ceremonies at 6:00 p.m. on July 19 and conclude the following morning, July 20, with closing ceremonies around 6:00 a.m.

In between, participants will take turns walking, running or otherwise circling the track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. In addition, the celebration will include live music, Zumba, a movie, live comedy and food. A Candle Light Luminaria Ceremony will be held at nightfall to honor cancer survivors and caregivers and to remember those lost to cancer.

“Last year’s inaugural Relay For Life was such a great success, that we are thrilled to be able to partner with the American Cancer Society to host this event again in 2014,” said Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason. “Everyone in some way, shape or form as been affected by cancer and this event is a great way to honor the victims and survivors as well as fight back against this terrible disease.”

Relay participants can sign up individually or as a member of a team at www.RelayForLife.org/RochesterNY and are encouraged to raise money prior to the event.

Last year, over 200 participants helped raise over $30,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The ACS’s Relay for Life event ignites team spirit among participants and works to raise funds used to save lives and create more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

Since 1985, Relay for Life has spread to more than 5,200 communities in the U.S. and has become a worldwide movement, taking place in more than 25 countries.

All fans are encourage to drop off any old pairs of shoes, sandals, ice skates, at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Table outside the Red Wings Ticket Office on Sunday, June 29 and Saturday, July 5. Fans who drop off shoes will receive $2 off their ticket purchase at the Ticket Office window. The shoe drive proceeds will benefit the Rochester City Relay of the Red Wings.

2014 Nick Adenhart Memorial Scholarship winner Claire Wenisch

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Kernels Foundation will present Claire Wenisch as the winner of the 2014 Nick Adenhart Memorial Scholarship before the Kernels game with Burlington on Sunday, June 15^th.

Claire is a 2014 graduate of Cedar Rapids Xavier HS where her school activities, academic accomplishments and accomplishments in track and swimming were quite impressive, making her an excellent choice for the scholarship. Claire plans on attending the University of Northern Iowa to major in accounting.

Nick Adenhart was a bright young pitcher who played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2006, and was a rising star in the Los Angeles Angels organization. Only hours after Nick’s 2009 season debut on the mound for the Angels, a drunk driver tragically killed him on April 9, 2009 at age 22.

Nick’s family continues to honor him with the awarding of a $1,000 scholarship in his memory. The Kernels Foundation is privileged to administer the scholarship on behalf of Nick’s family.

Miracle host 5th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night

Festivities include postgame fireworks, survivor walk and silent auction

On Saturday, June 7, the Fort Myers Miracle will host a very special evening at the ballpark with the 5th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by the Lee Regional Cancer Center and 96.9 MORE FM.

The Miracle play the Lakeland Flying Tigers at 6:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium and fireworks will light up the Southwest Florida sky after the game. Breast cancer survivors will receive a free ticket to the game. The first 500 women to come through the gates will receive a pink bag compliments of Vein Specialists.

The silent auction will also other items including a Key West Express tickets, local hotel and restaurant certificates, dinner and show for four from the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, a Chicago White Sox Robin Ventura autographed jersey, a Paul Molitor autographed jersey and ball and much more.

A portion of the net proceeds from the jersey auction, silent auction and raffles will benefit the Lee Memorial Health Systems Regional Cancer Center to assist with mammogram services for uninsured and underinsured patients.

Prior to the game, a survivor walk will begin at 5:15 p.m. around the warning track at Hammond Stadium. Fans who are survivors, and their families, are invited to take part.

Fans can enjoy a SINK or SWIM Saturday. For just $12, fans get a wristband for All You Can Drink domestic draft beers through the sixth inning.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 8, 2014) – The Fort Myers Miracle are proud to team with Dave Clark Foundation for the ninth annual Special Needs Baseball camp on Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m. at Hammond Stadium. The baseball camp is open to the first 25 individuals, with a physical or mental challenge, age 18 and under.

The entire Miracle team and coaches will teach kids the baseball skills of hitting, throwing, catching and fielding. The camp affords the opportunity for campers to experience the feeling of being a professional baseball player for a day.

Cape Coral resident Dave Clark hosts the camp. Suffering from the effects of Post Polion Syndrome (PPS), 61-year old Clark amassed over 600 wins during a 30-year baseball career that began in the early 1970s. Currently, Clark focuses his energy on public speaking, organizing disability events and is an envoy international coach for Major League Baseball.

As part of the Disability Dream & Do activities, Clark will present the “Pulling Each Other Along Award” prior to the 6:05 p.m. Miracle game versus the Palm Beach Cardinals on Saturday, April 26. The award is presented to an unsung hero(s) whose selfless acts have helped those with a disability. “There are two types of dreamers. Dreamers that dream and dreamers that Dream & Do,” said Clark, the only professional baseball player to pitch from crutches. “D3 Baseball with the Fort Myers Miracle gives the youth a wonderful chance to do both, Dream & Do.”

Kids are asked to bring their own baseball gloves and one adult chaperone is required to be in attendance with each child attending the camp. Each participant will receive four tickets for the Miracle game that evening at 6:05 p.m. Lunch will also be provided following the camp activities.

This program allows homeless and disadvantaged veterans job training and skill development to help them overcome barriers to independence. Quilting to honor local Veterans

Cedar Rapids, IA – Quilts are being made on Saturday, March 8^th to honor Eastern Iowa Veterans and will be presented to local Veterans during a Cedar Rapids Kernels game this summer.

The quilting event will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, March 8^th from 9 am until 4:30 pm. All interested quilters are welcome to come to the stadium to create a quilt that will be given away to veterans on July 5th. Kits and fabric are available for purchase at Connie’s Quilt Shop, or use up some of your red/white/and blue “stash”.

To register for the quilting event on March 8^th, call Connie’s Quilt Shop at (319) 373-9455 by Wednesday, March 5^th. Those sewing during the quilting event will receive a free ticket to attend the Kernels game on July 5^th and those donating a completed quilt for a Veteran by June 2, 2014, will receive a 20% off coupon from Connie’s Quilt Shop (one coupon per person).

In addition to making the quilts, Connie’s Quilt Shop and machine quilter Jennifer McRae, are providing a quilt to be raffled off with the drawing to be held during the game on July 5^th. All proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Linn County Veterans Affairs.

Wendy’s, Miracle encourage reading with extra Books-N-Bats date

Fans can pick up tickets at Wendy’s in Lee, Collier counties

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 20, 2013) – The yellow buses are rolling, the school bell’s are already ringing and the Miracle have teamed up with Wendy’s to encourage you to hit the books! The Miracle have added Saturday, August 24 to the Books-N-Bats campaign.

Fans can pick up tickets at Wendy’s locations in Lee and Collier County. The Miracle will host the St. Lucie Mets at 6:05 p.m. Gates to Hammond Stadium will open at 5 p.m. Saturday, August 24 is also the final Dog Daze of the season. Fans are encouraged to bring the family dog out to the ballpark for a barking good time.

Wendy’s and the Miracle have teamed up for several successful seasons with the Books-N-Bats program. Geared toward elementary school children, the proactive approach of the Books-N-Bats program is, in the words of Miracle General Manager Andrew Seymour, “An important, hallmark program of which the Miracle and Wendy’s are very proud.”

Wendy’s Area Marketing Director Michelle McCurdy added, “Developing healthy, educated kids by promoting and rewarding reading efforts is something that’s important to us.”

The Miracle, led by top prospect Byron Buxton, have one of the best records in minor league baseball and have already clinched a playoff spot after winning the first half of the Florida State League schedule.

Douglas Park FREE Baseball Clinic

The Elizabethton Twins will be conducting a free Youth Baseball Clinic on August 17, 10:30AM to 12:30PM at Douglas Park.

Douglas Park is located behind the Elizabethton City School System Administrative Offices at 804 South Watauga Avenue. Instruction in the fundamentals of baseball will take place along with lunch and an autograph session.

“We look forward to a great day at Douglas Park and hope to see many of our local youth at this event, said Mike Mains, Parks and Recreation Director.” “This is just another way our Minor League Baseball Franchise can give back to this community which is a win for our players, staff and fans alike.”

The camp will feature basic instruction in hitting, fielding and throwing. Participants will also have the opportunity to talk one on one with Elizabethton Twins players, will receive tickets to a future game and will have lunch with team members. Miracle to don special pink jerseys to be auctioned off

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 30, 2013) – On Saturday, June 8, the Fort Myers Miracle will host a very special evening at the ballpark with the 4th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by the Lee Memorial Health System Foundation and Sun Broadcasting.

The Miracle play the Bradenton Marauders at 6:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium and fireworks will light up the Southwest Florida sky after the game. The first 500 women entering the ballpark will receive a pink tote bag compliments of McDonald’s. Gates will open at 5 p.m.

In honor of breast cancer survivors, the Miracle will wear pink jerseys that will be available for auction during the game. The auction will take place on the concourse and conclude in the middle of the sixth inning. Fans with the winning bids will be invited onto the field after the game to receive the jersey from the respective player.The silent auction will also other items including a Key West Express Round Trip flight from Air Expeditions Seaplane Adventures, dinner and show for four from the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, a two-day, one-night stay at the Crowne Plaza including gift certificates to Shoeless Joe’s Sports Cafe, gift certificates from Norman Love Chocolates, the Prawnbroker restaurant, the University Grill and much more.

Compliments of 94.5 The Arrow and Scream Guitars, there also be a special raffle for a one of a kind pink electric guitar.

The Rochester Red Wings are set to host the first-ever American Cancer Society Relay for Life event in the City of Rochester on June 29, 2013 at Frontier Field.

The overnight, community walk around the warning track at Frontier Field will begin with a Survivor Lap at 7:00 p.m. on June 29 and conclude the following morning, June 30, with a Fight Back Ceremony at 7:00 a.m.

In addition, the celebration will include music, dancing, games, food and a candlelight vigil at nightfall to honor cancer survivors and caregivers and to remember those lost to cancer.

Rock Cats to Host Welcome Home Player Dinner for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center

The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, has announced its “Welcome Home Dinner” will take place on Tuesday, April 2 at Hawks Landing Country Club in Southington. Fans will have the opportunity to have dinner with the players before the 2013 season starts. A team autograph session will take place at 5:00pm and dinner will be served at 6:00 pm with each table featuring a player or coach. The Rock Cats Foundation along with the New Britain Elks Lodge #957, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Gordon Bonetti Florist will sponsor the annual “meet the team” event, as the club arrives from spring training. Individual tickets are only $35 for adults and $25 for children (12 and under), with the proceeds benefiting the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Tickets are on sale at the box office or by calling the Rock Cats at 860-224-8383 ext 22. Tables and event sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses. Tickets are sold on a first come first serve basis. This popular event is expected to sell out.

The Annual “Rock Cats Welcome Home Dinner” serves as an occasion to celebrate the arrival of spring and the start of another professional baseball season in Connecticut. Members of the Rock Cats organization- players, coaches, front office personnel and Rocky, (the team’s popular mascot)- will be present at this festive dinner. As in the past, Rock Cats players will meet and greet all those in attendance, while also expressing their collective appreciation for the tremendous support the community has extended to this franchise for more than three decades.

Proceeds from the “Rock Cats Welcome Home Dinner” will benefit the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, which is dedicated to improving the physical and emotional health of children through family-centered care, research, education and advocacy. “This unique event provides the public a unique opportunity to spend an evening with the players they will be rooting for this season while benefiting a wonderful cause in the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center,” Rock Cats President John Willi said.

The Rock Cats open their 31^st season on April 4 in Richmond, Virginia and return to the Hardware City a week later on Thursday, April 11 (6:05) for the home opener against the Red Sox affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs.
