Triple-A Final Stretch to Benefit Local Charity

 

New York, NY, September 21, 2021 — Minor League Baseball™ (MiLB™) today announced the creation of a charitable component to the 10-game Triple-A Final Stretch of games that will benefit 501(c)3 charities in each Triple-A city.

For each home run hit by Triple-A teams (home and road games) during the Triple-A Final Stretch, Minor League Baseball will donate $50 per home run to a local charity selected by the team. The team hitting the most home runs over the 10-game span will generate an extra $5,000 donation for their charity.

The Triple-A Final Stretch begins on September 22nd as the Knights will host the Norfolk Tides from Truist Field. The Knights have selected Baseball For Life as this year’s charity to receive these donations.

Baseball For Life looks to teach young people throughout the Charlotte community the importance of our four pillars of Character – Service, Stewardship, Leadership and Ownership. These skills are important in the game of baseball are in life. The role of Baseball For Life is to effectively coordinate and channel these our community’s resources in a way which most positively impacts young people. Although Baseball For Life will continue to evolve over the years its initial tangible influence on the community’s youth will be felt primarily through five on-going initiatives.

Weston Named 2021 Service Through Sports Award Recipient

 

The Winston-Salem Dash are proud to announce Claudette Weston as the recipient of the 2021 Service Through Sports Award, presented by Truist. The Service Through Sports award is given annually to a member of the local athletic community who has positively impacted the city of Winston-Salem through his/her efforts as a player, coach, executive or member of the media.

Weston is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Weston & Associates, Inc., a meeting and event management company based in Winston-Salem. She has spent the entirety of her professional career as a catalyst for positive change by serving on over 50 boards and using local sports as a way to bring the citizens of Winston-Salem together.

She has served as a member of the Greater Winston-Salem Sports Commission and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Winston-Salem National Little League. She was also a driving force in bringing the AAU Junior Boys 17-and-Under National Basketball Tournament to Winston-Salem from 1992 through 1995.

While Weston holds passion for sports, her service has spanned far beyond the athletic community. She has contributed as a member for ACTS of Forsyth County, Advocacy for the Poor, the Council on Anxiety Disorders, and others.

“Claudette has made a profoundly positive impact on the Winston-Salem sports community,” says Winston-Salem Dash President C.J. Johnson. “we are honored to recognize her dedication and hard work with this years’ Service Through Sports Award.”

Weston has called the Piedmont Triad home her entire life, as she was born and raised in Old Town and is a proud graduate of Guilford College. She will be recognized at Truist Stadium on Tuesday, September 14th as the Winston-Salem Dash take on the Asheville Tourists in the annual 336 Day celebration.

Woodpeckers Alzheimer’s Jersey Auction Raises $8,051.41 For Charity

 

On Saturday, August 7th, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers might have looked unrecognizable, even to the most adoring fans. The Class A affiliate of the Houston Astros traded its signature red, gray and black colors for purple to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. The event, Alzheimer’s Awareness Night, raised $8,051.41 through both an in-person and online auction of the game-worn purple jerseys seen on-field that evening. Proceeds from the jersey auction directly benefitted the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern North Carolina. The game’s festivities were presented by long-time partner McKee Homes and drew over 4,000 fans to Segra Stadium.

The Woodpeckers, sporting custom purple jerseys with the Alzheimer’s Association logo, beat the Fredericksburg Nationals 6-4. The first 1,200 fans through the gates also received a purple hat. Historically, the color purple has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease because of the combination of the calm stability of blue and the passionate energy of red.

“The fight to end Alzheimer’s has enlisted so many in our local communities,’ says Lisa Roberts, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association – Eastern North Carolina Chapter. “Here in Fayetteville, longtime partners like McKee Homes and growing relationships like ours with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers are shining examples of those in the fight. Dash Announce Hometown Heroes USA Celebration

 

The Winston-Salem Dash are teaming up with Salem One for a Hometown Heroes USA event at Truist Stadium on Saturday, September 11 to honor all service members and first responders (active and retired). The Dash will take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, at 6:00 p.m.

Service members and first responders (and one guest) can take advantage of a special $5 offer that includes their game ticket and a voucher for a hot dog, chips, and a Pepsi product. Additional tickets that include the food and beverage voucher can be purchased for $16. The first 500 service members and first responders to purchase tickets will be eligible to receive a free pair of OnCloud athletic shoes at the game, courtesy of Veterans Service of the Carolinas. Fans should register for shoes when purchasing their tickets, and the shoes generally run a half size small. All tickets through this offer must be reserved by Wednesday, September 1.

Dash to Host Fill the Stands with Cans Night

The Winston-Salem Dash, in partnership with the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association (PTAA) and WXII will host the eleventh annual Fill the Stands with Cans Night as the Dash take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday, August 14th at Truist Stadium.

This event benefits Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, an organization whose mission is to eliminate food waste and eradicate hunger throughout the Carolinas. Fans are encouraged to lend a helping hand by donating non-perishable food items or cash, both of which will be collected by volunteers stationed around the stadium on Saturday.

According to Jon Lowder, Executive Director of the PTAA, the Fill the Stands with Cans campaign has given the organization’s annual food drive a tremendous boost over the last few years. Second Harvest can provide seven meals for every $1 raised, so every dollar donated makes a big impact. Food donations are equally important, as they can be effective immediately.

As a thank you from the Dash and the PTAA for helping support Second Harvest, any fan who brings a non-perishable food item or cash donation to Saturday’s game will receive a ticket voucher that can be redeemed for any remaining 2021 Dash home game, excluding Saturday night’s game. Vouchers can be redeemed at the PTI Box Office, which is open leading up to all home games and from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday on non-gamedays.

LP Frans Stadium to Host Disability Dream & Do Camp

 

HICKORY, NC – Six local Rotary Clubs, with the generous support of the Hickory Crawdads and their parent club, the Texas Rangers, are offering a Dave Clark Disability Dream & Do (D3Day) Baseball Camp to children and young adults with varying disabilities along with their families and caregivers on Saturday, August 28th at LP Frans Stadium. The camp will run approximately from 10am-12pm.

The camp is a professional style baseball camp and will be staffed by numerous volunteers from the Crawdads, the Rotary Clubs, and the baseball teams from Lenoir-Rhyne University and Catawba Valley Community College.

The camp is free to participants. Pre-registration is required at www.D3Day.com. Interested families should select “events” on the website; then click on the Crawdads logo. A tab for participant registration is on the left-hand menu. All participants will receive a free t-shirt and cap, and lunch will be provided. Volunteers may also pre-register by selecting the volunteer registration tab on the same menu.

“The Crawdads organization is about making life-long memories and we can’t wait to be a part of the Disability Dream and Do Camp and help do just that for the participants and their families,” Crawdads General Manager Douglas Locascio said.

The Rotary project has been titled “The 100 Years of Rotary Disability Camp” to celebrate 100 years of Rotary service to local communities. According to Kelly Farr, president of the Rotary Club of Hickory, it is a demonstration of how Rotary does good in the world.

“Rotary is a huge international organization, and our local clubs support a number of worldwide projects but we especially value service to the local communities,” Farr said. “This project allows six clubs to join hands and offer something very special to the often underserved and forgotten population of wonderful disabled children.”

D3Day sports camps were created by Dave Clark, the only pitcher in professional baseball history to pitch on crutches, and Doug Cornfield, a medal winning runner at Georgia, who himself has a son born without arms. The Crawdads’ camp will also feature Emmy award-winning ESPN analyst Dave Stevens who was born without legs but played college football and hockey as well as professional baseball.

The Dave Clark camps allow children with any disability to interact with college and professional athletes in various drills and compete in sports with no limitations. There will be various stations to learn baseball skills and a “high five game.” The event will conclude with an award ceremony for participants.

Check-in for the camp will begin at 9:45am and will wrap up with lunch at noon.

Segra Stadium To Host 3rd Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

 

The 3rd Annual Fayetteville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on the morning of Saturday, September 11th at Segra Stadium. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the climb will start at 8:47 a.m.

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters, police, and EMS who selflessly gave their lives on that tragic day. Each participant will pay tribute to those brave souls by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. Through community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 10 EMS are never forgotten.

Registration fees are $30 per person and include your entry to the climb and a t-shirt. Anyone interested in climbing MUST REGISTER ONLINE by September 8th. We will accept walk-up registration; however, t-shirts cannot be guaranteed for anyone registering day of. Check-in and registration for the event will begin at 7:00 a.m. All proceeds from the stair climb will benefit programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to support the families of your local fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.

Wood Ducks to Host Youth Softball Camp Presented by Lenoir Community College

Kinston, N.C. – The Down East Wood Ducks announced Wednesday, that they will host a Youth Softball Camp, presented by Lenoir Community College. The camp will take place Tuesday, June 29th – Thursday, July 1st.

The Youth camp will offer sessions from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on June 29– 30th with check-in at 8:30 a.m. On July 1st, check-in is at 3:30 p.m. and the session will run from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. The three-day camp is $60 per participant (ages 5-14) and includes a camp t-shirt. Each camper will be responsible for bringing their own equipment (glove, bat, helmet, etc.). Parents must sign a waiver on behalf of their child to participate and are welcome to stay and watch from the stands at no additional cost.

The camp will feature instruction from the Shockers II softball team, including some former players. All five seniors from 2020 and the seniors from this season received offers to play college softball and pursue collegiate degrees. The Shockers teams have produced over 115 D1 college athletes over the years. “The Shockers are both honored and thrilled to partner with the DEWDS to bring fast pitch softball to Historic Grainger Stadium. We cherish every opportunity to cultivate a young girl’s dream of playing a game that promotes integrity in all aspects of life,” says head coach Jody Turner. “Some Shockers alum will come back to the camp to give firsthand advice and instruction to the campers as well.”

The Couch Oil Cares Scholarship Program was established in 2015 in an effort to help defray the rising costs of higher education. This $1,000 scholarship is available to students who have been accepted into either a four-year or community college and reside in a 16-county area surrounding the Triangle.

Segra Stadium To Host Pet Adoption Event April 24

 

The Fayetteville Woodpeckers are partnering with local animal rescues and pet vendors to host an adoption event at Segra Stadium on Saturday, April 24th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This event is free to the public and will coincide with the first opportunity for fans to purchase tickets for May Woodpeckers home games.

While inside the ballpark, fans can meet available dogs and cats from each rescue and fill out an application if interested in adopting. All patrons entering Segra Stadium must fill out a waiver upon entrance. The Woodpeckers will also be collecting items for attending rescues. Anyone who donates an item ($5 value or greater) from the list below will receive 10% off in The Birds’ Nest Team Store. Items being requested are:

• Cleaning Products (Paper towels, disinfectant spray or wipes, etc.)

• Peanut Butter (JIF)

• Canned or Dry Dog & Cat Food

• Dog or Cat Treats

• Puppy Pads

Dash to Deliver Free Ice Cream to Local Neighborhood

 

The Winston-Salem Dash and Truist are bringing Truist Stadium’s delicious frozen treat, ice cream, to a local neighborhood. Dash staff and team mascot BOLT will deliver free ice cream from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 7.

The free ice cream delivery is designed to bring some joy to families as spring arrives and baseball season begins. Neighborhoods can be nominated in a social media contest on the Dash Facebook page or by emailing the Dash at [email protected]. In 2020, the Dash delivered free ice cream to over a dozen neighborhoods.

“We are excited to once again surprise a local neighborhood with free ice cream” said Dash President, C.J. Johnson. “We decided we don’t have to wait until Opening Day to bring some smiles to our fan’s faces.”

Dash to Toss Free T-Shirts in Local Neighborhoods

 

The Winston-Salem Dash, Truist, and Wake Forest Baptist Health are taking the most popular in-game promotion at Truist Stadium, the “Free T-shirt Toss” to one local neighborhood. Dash staff and team mascot BOLT will toss free T-shirts from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31.

The “T-shirt Toss” is designed to bring some joy to families as they continue through this unusual school year. Neighborhoods can be nominated in a social media contest on the Dash Facebook page or by emailing the Dash at [email protected]. The Dash will also be delivering free ice cream to neighborhoods in the coming weeks.

“Nothing gets a crowd more excited than a Free T-shirt Toss,” said Dash President, C.J. Johnson. “If your neighborhood is selected, the odds of catching a T-shirt when you are only competing with your family are dramatically better than in a full stadium!”

T-shirts will be wrapped with useful information from Wake Forest Baptist Health regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the neighborhoods is selected, they will be informed of the delivery date, so families can be prepared to be on their porch during the T-shirt Toss.

Nearly 100 families to receive gifts through Dash City Gives Drive-Thru event at Truist Stadium.

The Winston-Salem Dash will be providing children from nearly 100 families in need with gifts this holiday season at a Dash City Gives Drive Thru event. The families will also receive complimentary hot cocoa as they proceed through the parking lot at Truist Stadium on Monday, December 21 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. CDC and Wake Forest Baptist Health recommended safety protocol will be followed.

Select triad families were informed of the opportunity through non-profits, including The Hispanic League. All participants have RSVP’d. Day of arrivals will not be eligible for gifts.

The Dash staff and mascot Bolt will be assisted with present distribution by Santa! Bulls Partner With BASF, Cree|Wolfspeed to Create Pollinator Garden at DBAP

 

Today the Durham Bulls announced a partnership with BASF Agricultural Solutions North America, a leading supplier in the agriculture industry creating sustainable and innovative solutions for farmers, and Cree|Wolfspeed, a powerhouse semiconductor company focused on silicon carbide and GaN technologies, to create a pollinator garden at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The collaboration, sponsored by BASF and Cree|Wolfspeed, will contribute to the Durham Bulls commitment to strengthening the community and creating positive change in the Triangle. The garden, which will be planted in mid-November, will feature both annual and perennial pollinator plants including Goldenrods, Stoke’s Aster, and New Jersey Tea and reflect the Bulls colors – blue, white and orange.

“The Durham Bulls are proud to partner with BASF and Cree|Wolfspeed to provide the Triangle with another interactive space to learn about the importance of pollinators and their role in the food chain,” said Mike Birling, Durham Bulls Vice President of Baseball Operations. “We know the importance of building these spaces in urban settings and are delighted to play a role in the sustainability of our local environment and in the education of the community.”

Approximately 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on pollination, making pollinators vital to both the ecosystem and the food supply chain. In addition to supporting our food supply, there are many other environmental benefits of wild flowering plants including producing oxygen to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, preventing soil erosion, purifying water and returning the moisture to the atmosphere after it rains.

Downtown Durham is host to several beehives, making the DBAP an ideal location to help sustain the pollinator population native to the area. The goal of the pollinator garden is to expand the availability of food sources to surrounding pollinators. While the honeybee and monarch butterfly are some of the most iconic pollinators, patrons of the DBAP will see beetles, moths, birds, and many other insects.

“At BASF, one of our goals is to educate the public on various ways to improve and impact sustainability, which is why we are partnering with the Durham Bulls and Cree|Wolfspeed to establish a pollinator garden,” said Paul Rea, senior vice president of Agricultural Solutions North America. “We hope partnerships like these can continue to shed light on the vital role pollinators play in our food supply chain and ecosystem.”

Inaugural Wool E. Bull’s Baste Race Announced

 

The Durham Bulls announced today plans for the inaugural Wool E. Bull’s Baste Race, a virtual race featuring a One-Mile Fun Run and 5K, presented by PNC Bank. Two race distances allow for people of all ages and abilities to participate, while the virtual format means individuals anywhere can join the greatest mascot in the world for a fun-filled Thanksgiving race they’ll never forget.

Registration for the Thanksgiving-themed virtual race is now open and runs through Sat., Oct. 31. Participants will have one week — Nov. 23 to Nov. 29 — to complete the race. They will receive a race medal, race bib and performance t-shirt, as well as a downloadable finisher’s certificate once race results are uploaded.

“As we prepare for a Thanksgiving holiday that will be unlike any other, PNC looks forward to helping the Durham Bulls bring this virtual event to friends and fans everywhere,” said Jim Hansen, PNC regional president for Eastern Carolinas. “We are pleased to join Wool E.
