Baby Cakes host peanut allergy-friendly game

It’s hard to imagine a baseball game without peanuts, but in a new collaboration between Minor League Baseball and AUVI-Q (epinephrine injection, USP), fans that suffer from peanut allergies can enjoy America’s national pastime with less concern.

The New Orleans Baby Cakes will host a “Peanut-Free Game Day” on Thursday, August 24 when they face the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. To make the ballpark safer to sufferers of peanut allergies, the peanut free-game will feature no in-park sales of peanuts or products containing peanut ingredients.

As one of the most common food allergies, peanut sensitivity can lead to reactions ranging from mild irritation to anaphylactic shock, with peanut allergies becoming more prevalent in children.

“With peanut allergies on the rise, AUVI-Q will support our overarching commitment to our fans,” said David Wright, Chief Marketing & Commercial Officer for Minor League Baseball. “We hope that all families, regardless of existing allergies, can experience a Minor League Baseball game to its fullest during designated peanut-free nights.”

Randy Rogers Joins Lineup for Reckless Kelly Celebrity Softball Jam

ROUND ROCK, TX – Look Out Yonder and fans will see a new addition to the musical lineup for the 9th annual Reckless Kelly Celebrity Softball Jam. Texas crooner Randy Rogers will be Actin’ Crazy when he takes the stage at Dell Diamond, joining Wade Bowen, Roger Creager, Cody Canada & the Departed and the boys of Reckless Kelly.

Rogers has been performing with the Randy Rogers Band for the past 15 years, steadily building a following that has expanded beyond their Texas roots. Their newest album Nothing Shines Like Neon is a collection that showcases the band’s taut musicianship as well as Rogers’ earnest vocals and insightful songwriting. In 2015, Rogers teamed up with fellow Jam performer Bowen on the critically acclaimed album Hold My Beer Vol. 1.

The Reckless Kelly Celebrity Softball Jam combines an athleticism-optional and antic-filled softball game with hours of live, musical entertainment on two stages.

The event will kick off at 1 p.m. with the softball game featuring former major leaguers Josh Beckett, Norm Charlton, Brooks Kieschnick and Glenn Wilson along with former Longhorns and NFL players Quan Cosby and Kasey Studdard. Following the game, fans will be invited onto the outfield for a concert featuring 20+ acts.

KGSR’s Andy Langer will once again take over the mic alongside fellow media stars Addie Broyles, Anne Hudson, Brendan Anthony, Charlie Hodge, Eric Raines, Bob Ballou and Ricky Doyle.

All proceeds from the event will benefit The Nolan Ryan Foundation and the Reckless Kelly Charitable Youth Foundation, with a focus on supporting youth sports programs in Central Texas. Since its inception, the Reckless Kelly Celebrity Softball Jam has raised over $350,000 for area youth leagues, including the funding of a $150,000 renovation of Mabson Field in East Austin, TX.

River Cats, BloodSource reunite for annual Blood Drive

West Sacramento, CA – The Sacramento River Cats and BloodSource are teaming up yet again for the fifth annual Raley Field Blood Drive on Friday, August 4. Both parties are excited to continue this partnership into its fifth year and beyond.

The River Cats and BloodSource will be open in the Raley Field parking lot next Friday, August 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In celebration of the fifth annual Raley Field blood drive, BloodSource is giving away great prizes all day. Every donor will receive two tickets to a River Cats game and an exclusive San Francisco Giants Blood Donor t-shirt.

Since August 2013, the River Cats and BloodSource have teamed up to register over 700 donors and collect more than 615 units of blood. Of those 700-plus donors, 315 of them have been new donors, donating blood for the first time at Raley Field.

“We have had incredible success partnering with the River Cats these last five years,” said Heather Sharp, BloodSource Account Manager. “Every year we are thrilled with and proud of the response from the West Sacramento and Sacramento communities. I know that I speak for the River Cats when I say we’re eagerly anticipating our fifth successful drive.”

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood and the summer can be a challenging time for BloodSource and other organizations to collect blood. High schools and colleges – where many blood drives are hosted – are on summer break, while many regular blood donors are on vacation and unavailable to donate. In addition, prospective donors often become deferred due to the effects of travel. Drives like the one at Raley Field provide an alternate location and opportunity for regular and new donors.

Erik Macke to Celebrate “Home Run For Life” Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Dodgers and INTEGRIS continue the 2017 “Home Run for Life” series Friday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark by recognizing Erik Macke, who was involved in a high-speed motorcycle accident that led to a fractured spine, partial paralysis and amputation of his lower left leg.

Originally expected to be confined to a wheelchair, Macke, now 23, has mastered driving, began walking with a prosthetic and arm crutches and also started a successful leathercrafting business.

“Home Run For Life” recognizes individuals in the Oklahoma City community who have overcome a significant medical event with the help of their families, physicians and health care professionals. To symbolize the end of their battle against adversity, honorees take a home run “lap” around the bases during an in-game ceremony.

“We are proud to continue the Home Run For Life Series this season and honor some remarkable individuals in our community who have battled exceptional challenges with their health,” OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said. “Their resolve and courage offer great inspiration for us all and we are pleased to join with INTEGRIS to recognize their triumphs.”

Motorcycles were always part of Macke’s life and he started taking long distance trips across the country at age 18.

He was recently married with a daughter on the way in July 2015 when a motorcycle ride changed his life. Macke was involved in an accident and taken to the hospital with a fractured spine and severe damage to his left leg.

He underwent surgery to fuse his spine and his leg had to be amputated above the knee. He remained in the intensive care unit for one week before being moved to Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center for three weeks of inpatient therapy.

Due to his spinal cord injury, Macke lost all function from his waist down for about six months. He required the assistance of two people to get in and out of bed and to his wheelchair. He also needed assistance sitting up and completing routine daily activities.

Macke worked hard to build his upper body strength and sitting balance and left his first stay at Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation as a wheelchair user in August 2015. Macke continued his hard work, learning how to drive with adaptive hand controls and mastering other daily tasks through numerous hours of outpatient therapy.

A year later, Macke returned to Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation for three weeks to begin inpatient prosthetic therapy. With a new prosthetic leg and the use of forearm crutches, Macke learned to stand and walk.

“Getting to stand tall again was one of the greatest feelings,” Macke said.

Macke said he had a great experience with the staff and care he received at INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation and now works as a peer mentor there, encouraging young spinal cord injury patients.

“I feel very blessed and thankful for my recovery so far,” Macke said. “I believe a positive mind helps with positive healing. Life’s too short to not be happy all the time. We all have problems going on in life, but if everyone takes a minute and thinks about all the blessings around them then you realize there is nothing to worry about.”

His daughter is now 1 1/2 years old and he and his wife Emily are expecting a baby boy in October.

During his recovery, Macke started a business called Macke Leatherworks and now works fulltime as a leathersmith crafting various leather products such as wallets, belts, purses, keychains and more, selling them both locally and online.

“Leather work was an escape for me through some of the worst times in my recovery,” Macke said. “It has been a great success so far and I can’t thank my customers enough for that.”

The Dodgers continue their current eight-game homestand tonight at 7:05 against Reno. The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. on a $2 Thursday, featuring $2 soda, water and beer from a line of Pepsi and Budweiser products.

The Dodgers remain at home through Tuesday, Aug. 1, including a four-game series against the Tacoma Rainiers starting at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Bricktown.

Chasers Players, Front Office Staff to Participate in Chasers Community Week

The Omaha Storm Chasers organization’s third annual “Chasers Community Week” presented by Summit Dental Health kicks off on Friday, July 29. Omaha Storm Chasers players and front office members will be volunteering their time throughout the Omaha Metro community from July 29-August 6. Details for each day of “Chasers Community Week” can be found below, which include players visiting Children’s Hospital and the Southwest YMCA, as well as participating in Buddy Baseball at Werner Park. In addition, the front office will help serve dinner at Ronald McDonald House, and volunteer at The Wall That Heals among many other events in the community.

Planned Events for “Chasers Community Week”

  • Saturday, July 29 – The Storm Chasers organization will be auctioning off Christmas sweater jerseys on Christmas in July presented by Mannheim Steamroller, with the proceeds benefitting Moving Veterans Forward. There will also be a lemonade stand hosted by the Storm Chasers and Summit Dental at Werner Park that evening, with proceeds benefitting the Open Door Mission.
  • Sunday, July 30 – The Storm Chasers organization hosts the first of two UnitedHealthcare Library Nights at Werner Park. This will be in addition to hosting First Responders and having interactive fire, police and medical displays, including a helicopter in the parking lot, on First Responders Night that evening.
  • Monday, July 31 – Several Storm Chasers players will be visiting Southwest YMCA starting at 11:00 a.m. to play a pickup game of baseball with kids at that location. That evening, the Storm Chasers organization’s second UnitedHealthcare Library Night will take place at Werner Park, in addition to a Drawstring Backpack Giveaway presented by Huber Chevrolet.
  • Tuesday, August 1 – Storm Chasers front office members along with Summit Dental Health employees will assist in cooking and serving dinner at the Ronald McDonald House.
  • Wednesday, August 2 – The organization will host their annual Jirschele Family Memorial Golf Outing at Tara Hills Golf Course to help benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Wall That Heals, a half-scale duplication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., is also set to arrive at Werner Park that day thanks to Werner Enterprises. Storm Chasers players and front office members will also participate in the Leader Reader at the Children’s Museum. Storm Chasers front office members and a mascot will also be visiting Offutt Air Force Base that day.
  • Thursday, August 3 – The Wall That Heals, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. will be open beginning at 11:00am until the closing ceremonies take place at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 6.
  • Friday, August 4 – Storm Chasers players will be visiting with patients at Children’s Hospital.
  • Saturday, August 5 – Bellevue Buddy Baseball will take place at Werner Park at 9:00 a.m., with Storm Chasers players and front office members assisting in the morning event to support the Down Syndrome Alliance. The event will feature headshots and walk-up songs for the buddies playing baseball. Storm Chasers players and Casey will also be at First National Bank on 132nd & Center for their annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive.
  • Sunday, August 6 – The Storm Chasers organization salutes all former and current members of our armed forces on Military Appreciation Day at Werner Park. Following that day’s contest at approximately 6:00 p.m. will be a closing ceremony for The Wall That Heals, which will include the playing of “Taps”.

The Storm Chasers return to Werner Park to begin an eight-game homestand on Saturday, July 29, starting with a four-game set versus the Fresno Grizzlies. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. that evening.

Bees Host Knothole Clinic at Smith’s Ballpark

SALT LAKE CITY (July 14, 2017) – The Salt Lake Bees will host the second Knothole Clinic of the 2017 season on Saturday, July 15 at Smith’s Ballpark beginning at 10 a.m.

Knothole Club members are invited to attend the two-hour clinic, where they will participate in a variety of baseball drills with instructions from Bees players. The youth will also have the opportunity for autographs and photos.

2017 Pacific Coast League All-Star pitcher Troy Scribner will be there to lead drills along with teammates Alex Blackford, Cody Ege, Drew Gagnon, Jason Gurka and Damien Magnifico.

Children ages 12-and-under can join the 2017 Knothole Club, sponsored by Cyprus Credit Union and Denny’s for $13 per season. Knothole Club memberships include a ticket voucher to a Salt Lake Bees game, a Bees T-shirt and a membership I.D. card entitling the holder to discounted Bees and Utah Jazz tickets, along with special offers from Knothole Club sponsors.

Knothole Club memberships may be purchased online at slbees.com or at Bees home games at Smith’s Ballpark. The Bees weekend series against Sacramento continues on Friday night with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. The team will honor the 15th year anniversary of the Angels 2002 World Series on Saturday night with a replica championship ring giveaway and finish up the series on Sunday afternoon matinee at 1:05 p.m.

‘The Wall That Heals’ Coming to Werner Park Aug. 3-6

The Wall That Heals, featuring a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., will be coming to Werner Park from August 3-6. The exhibit, which includes the replica wall and Mobile Education Center, will be presented by Werner Enterprises and open 24 hours a day over the four day span starting on August 3rd.

“Hosting The Wall That Heals at Werner Park in conjunction with Werner Enterprises will be an incredible honor,” said Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro. “We highly encourage everyone in the Omaha Metro to take the time to visit and pay tribute along with us to our servicemen and servicewomen in our Armed Forces.”

Approximately 250 feet long, the memorial wall bears the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam, while honoring the three million-plus Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. It will be escorted to Werner Park by local law enforcement on Wednesday, August 2 and on display beginning the following day Thursday, August 3. It will be open 24 hours a day until the evening of August 6, following the Storm Chasers’ Military Appreciation Day contest at Werner Park, with closing ceremonies taking place post-game.

“Taking The Wall That Heals on the road gives thousands more veterans and their family members an opportunity to see The Wall and honor those who have served and sacrificed so much,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the nonprofit that built The Wall. “It helps veterans from all of America’s conflicts to find healing and a powerful connection through their common military experiences.”

Friends and family members of those who are honored on the wall are encouraged to bring a photo to the exhibit to be scanned and included in the VVMF’s The Wall of Faces. More details about The Wall That Heal‘s visit to Omaha, including opening ceremonies at Werner Park and the Storm Chasers’ Military Appreciation Day on Sunday, August 6, will be announced later this month.

The Wall That Heals has visited more than 500 communities throughout the nation since its dedication. EL PASO – June 30, 2017 – Army veteran Justin Griffin has been named the winner of the Bank of America Manager for a Day announced the Chihuahuas. Griffin, who was nominated via a social media contest, will fill the role on Sunday, July 2nd during the GECU Independence Day Celebration as the Chihuahuas take on the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks) at 7:05 p.m.

Griffin’s honor comes in addition to a $10 military offer on Zone E, K, L & Standing Room Only (SRO) tickets as well as the best postgame Fireworks Spectacular in El Paso on July 2nd and July 3rd.

“I can’t even put into words how thankful I am for my amazing wife, wonderful family, friends, and for such a great organization for even making this possible,” Griffin said. “This is truly an honor and a dream come true. I feel like a kid again!”

During Griffin’s 12 years of service he received multiple badges, awards and medals. These include but are not limited to the Combat Action Badge, six Army Accommodation Medals, eight Army Achievement Medals, four Good Conduct Medals, and the Humanitarian Service Medal for his assistance with Hurricane Katrina relief. He was also awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, U.S. Army Airborne Wings, U.S. Army Air Assault Wings and multiple foreign Parachutist Badges, to name a few.

Following his retirement, Griffin is now a stay at home dad to his two sons, Reece (3), and Bennett (1), and is a loving and devoted husband to his wife Karla.

BANK OF AMERICA MANAGER FOR A DAY AWARD WINNER

JUSTIN GRIFFIN: Born in Dallas, Texas on November 15, 1984, at the age of 19, Griffin joined the Army on September 30, 2004 and made his first deployment to Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, N.C. He was also awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, U.S. Army Airborne Wings, U.S. Army Air Assault Wings and multiple foreign Parachutist Badges, to name a few.

Following his retirement, Griffin is now a stay at home dad to his two sons, Reece (3), and Bennett (1), and is a loving and devoted husband to his wife Karla.

BANK OF AMERICA MANAGER FOR A DAY FINALISTS

ANTONIO GARCIA: Antonio Garcia served in the United States Army with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. Garcia was an Aircraft Electrician, working on the UH60 Blackhawk.

During his years of service, he received the Air Medal for Persian Gulf Operations, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (for Persian Gulf Operations), the Army Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), and the Army Achievement Medal.

DAVID NEVAREZ: David Nevarez served as a Marine from Sept 7 1983 – July 7th 1991 as a Logistics Specialist at various Commands during his time in service. He spent many hours on the flight line and pier side ensuring all Marines and equipment were accounted for.

Nevarez was assigned to 5th Marine Regiment when they were called into Desert Storm and was part of the Logistical Team that assembled the Largest Amphibious Force since the Korean War and served on the USS Tripoli, USS Denver and USS Barbour County. He was part of Regimental Landing Team 5, the Forward Element of 5th Marines during Desert Storm and was assigned to Task Force Papa Bear.

Nevarez received numerous awards including the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Good Conduct Medal with 1 Star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), and the National Defense Medal & Combat Action Ribbon.

Nevarez is married to Sandra Nevarez has three children, Adeliade Redding of Jamul, California, and Esteban and Emilio Nevarez.

ROMAN SANDOVAL: Roman Sandoval is an Army Combat Veteran from El Paso. He enlisted in the US Army in 2001 and was stationed at Ft. Bliss as an Automated Logistics Specialist. Sandoval was a member of the 5/52 11th ADA Brigade’s 507th Maintenance Company.

While serving he earned numerous awards including the Unit Soldier of the Month, Battalion Soldier of the Quarter, and Brigade Soldier of the Year nominee, Army Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The only tour was a deployment for Sandoval was with the 507th to Iraq in 2003 at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While serving, his unit was ambushed; nine friends and coworkers were killed in action while six others were captured as prisoners of war. He returned safely home.

MICHAEL VELEZ: Michael Velez joined the Marine Corps in September of 2008 and attended the Amphibious Assault Vehicle school and assigned to North Carolina with the 2nd AAV Battalion. Velez was attached to Bravo Company and began doing training for a deployment to Afghanistan. Deployed in December of 2009 to the Helmand Province in Southern Afghanistan, he was part of Operation Moshtarak or also known as “The Battle of Marjah” which was the biggest joint operation in Afghanistan to date.

Velez received numerous awards including the International Security Assistance Force Award (ISAF), a Navy Unit Commendation Award, and a Meritorious Mast given to me by my unit for actions in Afghanistan. He was Honorably Discharged in June of 2012.

Chihuahuas Unveil Stars & Stripes Jerseys & Caps

EL PASO – June 23, 2017 – It’s a Fireworks Spectacular! as the Chihuahuas celebrate America’s birthday with the unveiling of the Stars and Stripes jerseys and caps to be worn during the July 1st, 2nd and 3rd GECU Independence Day Celebration games.

The jerseys will accompany the best fireworks in El Paso beginning with a postgame Fireworks Spectacular presented by KVIA and KISS FM on July 1st, a special fireworks presentation on July 2nd and an extended postgame fireworks program on July 3rd. Sunday’s celebration will also feature the Bank of America Manager for the Day where the Chihuahuas will recognize a former veteran as submitted by fans.

Made by OT Sports, the jerseys showcase the patriotic red, white & blue colors. The jersey features a white color block on the top half of the bodice and blue across the bottom covered in opaque stars. Red piping separates the two halves. The sleeves are white with red and blue trim.

The Chihuahuas will auction the game-worn Stars and Stripes jerseys on July 3rd, with proceeds benefiting the El Maida Shriners and the Chihuahuas Foundation.

The New Era 59FIFTY fitted Stars and Stripes cap, which made its initial debut in 2008, can be seen across Minor and Major League Baseball during the Independence Day weekend around the country. In addition to the fitted caps, the Chihuahuas Team Shop will also offer adjustable caps for the first time.

Season Seat Holders will be granted early entry into the Wednesday, June 28th Chihuahuas game with the option to purchase the cap beginning at 5 p.m. at the Chihuahuas Team Shop on Durango. The cap will be made available to ticketed fans at 6 p.m. when gates open. Sales will open to the general public on Thursday morning, June 29th at 10 a.m. Limited quantities of caps are available.

The GECU Independence Day Celebration is at the tail end of an eight-game homestand. ACES TO HOST BABY JAYLIN IN ST. MARY’S “HOME RUN FOR LIFE” CEREMONY

RENO, Nev. – The Reno Aces will host Saint Mary’s “Home Run for Life” ceremony, featuring Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell, director of Saint Mary’s Urgent Care, and her newborn baby daughter Jaylin, who was born with a rare heart defect. The ceremony will occur on Friday, June 23 when the Aces take on the Tacoma Rainiers at 7:05 p.m. at Greater Nevada Field.

Since 2014, the Aces and Saint Mary’s have been partnered to showcase the “Home Run for Life” program. Once a month, a brave individual in the Northern Nevada community is honored by taking a ceremonial trip around the bases with each team lining the baselines. The ceremony tells the story of a battle against adversity. Individuals honored have overcome or are battling a significant medical event in their life with the help of St. Mary’s personnel.

Anxious for the arrival of a new baby girl to her family, Dr. Curry-Winchell assumed she would be born without any health-related issues, just like her first child. However, shortly after delivery, newborn baby Jaylin received the diagnosis of a rare heart defect that is essentially a “door” between her right to left atrium.

Hearing ‘your daughter has a heart defect’ isn’t something that Dr. Curry-Winchell expected to hear after delivering her second child. Jaylin’s cardiac defect was initially found due to a standard recommendation to evaluate for cardiac disease based on Dr. Curry-Winchell’s history of lupus and a clotting disorder.

A recent follow-up appointment revealed that the defect is still present in Jaylin, which will require additional monitoring. Despite Jaylin’s current condition, life still operates as normal as possible for Dr. Curry-Winchell and her family. She highly advocates individuals to know their family history and obtain health screens based on that information. Because of Jaylin’s diagnosis, she plans to raise both her children to know what it means to be heart-healthy.

Dr. Curry-Winchell and Baby Jaylin will round the bases commemorating her “Home Run for Life” in the middle of the second inning Friday night. The Reno Aces and Tacoma Rainiers players and staff will be lined up along each baseline to greet both of them as they make their way toward home plate while her story of is publicly announced to the stadium crowd.

OBI All-American Blood Drive Saturday in Bricktown

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Dodgers will team up with the Oklahoma Blood Institute to host the All-American Blood Drive from 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The All-American Blood Drive aims to boost the supply of blood available in the state of Oklahoma in preparation for Independence Day weekend, as holidays often put stress on the area’s blood reserve.

All healthy adults age 16* and older who donate blood during the drive will receive two tickets to an upcoming 2017 OKC Dodgers game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, and 125 donors will have the opportunity to select tickets to the Dodgers’ July 4 game against the Iowa Cubs. First-time donors will be entered in a raffle for a VIP experience with the OKC Dodgers, including four all-inclusive club tickets.

“Each summer the All-American Blood Drive helps maintain the necessary blood supply for our state during a busy time of year,” OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said. “We are grateful for everyone who comes out to donate and want to have them return to the ballpark and enjoy a game this season as a thank you for their generosity.”

Hot dogs will be served throughout the blood drive and free parking will be available for donors Saturday in the Joe Carter Lot, located just east of the ballpark at the corner of East Reno Avenue and Joe Carter Avenue. A golf cart will be available to shuttle donors back to the parking lot from the donation site along South Mickey Mantle Drive.

Oklahoma Blood Institute is the ninth-largest non-profit blood center in America and employs nearly 800 Oklahomans. OBI works with an estimated 1,000 volunteers and 2,600 blood drive coordinators. OBI donors provide blood utilized in more than 160 medical facilities in Oklahoma.

The Dodgers open a home series tonight against the Nashville Sounds starting at 5:35 p.m. with the conclusion of a suspended game from April 21. The game will resume in the eighth inning tied, 1-1. The regularly scheduled game will then follow. Both games fall on a $2 Thursday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, featuring $2 soda, bottled water and beer from a line of Pepsi and Budweiser products.

First pitch for Friday night’s game is 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a pair of OKC Dodgers socks, presented by Topgolf. Fireworks are scheduled to follow the game. The series continues with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Sounds Saturday and then concludes at 2:05 p.m. on a Chaparral Energy Family Sunday, offering family friendly activities throughout the afternoon, including pregame player autographs and kids can run the bases after the game.

Baby Cakes, EJGH team up for Scalise blood drive

East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH) and the New Orleans Baby Cakes are joining forces for a blood drive benefiting U.S. Representative Steve Scalise this Saturday, June 24, at the EJGH Blood Center from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Those who wish to donate a pint of blood will receive a voucher for two (2) tickets to the July 8th Baby Cakes’ game against the Oklahoma City Dodgers at the Shrine on Airline.

“This is an important opportunity for our community,” said EJGH President and CEO Gerald Parton. “Representative Scalise has always put Jefferson Parish and the state of Louisiana first. It’s important that we give back to him during his time of need.”

“The Baby Cakes are proud to partner with EJGH on this important initiative,” added Cookie Rojas, Baby Cakes General Manager. “This community always comes together in difficult times, and this is a wonderful way to show our support for Representative Scalise.”

Scalise represents the 1st Congressional District of Louisiana, encompassing the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain to the area south to the Mississippi River delta. The Archbishop Rummel and LSU graduate, who serves as the House Majority Whip, was injured in a shooting on June 14, while practicing for the annual congressional baseball game. He remains hospitalized at the Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Virginia.

Salt Lake Bees to Expand Youth Baseball Programs

June 10, 2017

Promoting baseball at all levels of youth development, the Salt Lake Bees announced today an expansion of its youth baseball initiatives into four programs to further connect with the community and be stewards of the sport.

The announcement was part of a Major League Baseball “PLAY BALL” event at Smith’s Ballpark, which celebrated MLB’s new partnership with Minor League Baseball.

“The love of baseball is often associated with whether you played in your youth,” said Marc Amicone, general manager of the Salt Lake Bees. “As Major League Baseball connects more with young people through its PLAY BALL initiative, the Salt Lake Bees are also reorganizing our youth baseball program to further invest in the sport and provide more opportunities for boys and girls.”

YouthModeled after the ultra-successful Junior Jazz program – the largest youth basketball recreational league in the NBA – a Junior Bees program will be established. Currently, more than 10,000 kids are participating in Bees youth leagues organized by 35 community partners. Players will wear Bees branded team jerseys, receive a ticket to a Bees regular season game and be invited to attend skills clinics at Smith’s Ballpark.

The Salt Lake Bees Knothole Club, which is the largest kids club in Minor League Baseball since its formation in 2006, will become theSalt Lake Bees Kids Club for the 2018 season. For children 12 and under, membership benefits include a free T-shirt, free Bees game ticket/discounts on additional tickets, and access to player clinics at Smith’s Ballpark.

A new Salt Lake Bees Baseball Academy will launch in the fall of 2018, designed for developing competitive players with clinics, camps and tournaments along the Wasatch Front.

Partnering with Major League Baseball, the RBI Salt Lake program is joining a national endeavor about “reviving baseball in inner cities.” RBI programs have been started in more than 200 cities, including a pilot program in 2017 in Rose Park, which doubled its number of youth participants to 200 boys and girls. Rose Park Little League is the first RBI affiliate in the Salt Lake market and also features educational and life skills components.

Salt Lake City has had a Triple-A affiliate since 1994, including the past 17 seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. Sky Sox Host Heroes Classic Batting Practice

On a beautiful afternoon at Security Service Field, batting practice was in full swing. The crack of the bat filled the air as baseballs from the Colorado Springs coaching staff flew through the high altitude.

It was the beginning of another home game for the Sky Sox, but the top Brewers prospects weren’t in the cages this time around.

Instead, members of the Colorado Springs service community stood in the batter’s box, as representatives of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Colorado Springs Fire Department and the Colorado Springs chapter of the Wounded Warriors Project gathered to help kick off the 2017 Heroes Classic.

“It’s always fun to meet people that protect and serve our country,” said Sky Sox Manager Rick Sweet. “Any time I get an opportunity to spend time with these people and for my players to spend quality time with these people is always a great for them and for us.”

The annual batting practice was part of the Heroes Classic schedule, which aims to raise money and support for the men and women of the Colorado Springs community that choose to protect and serve the freedom and rights both at home and abroad.

“It’s an honor to serve the citizens of Colorado Springs and be able to do the things that I do,” said CSFD’s Ryan Pighetti, a 10-year firefighter at Station 17. “Being recognized for something like this is just icing on the cake. I have service inside of me and that’s why I do what I do.”

Pighetti and many others from across the three organizations had the opportunity to step onto the field and interact with players who share common values of hard work, determination, camaraderie and sacrifice.

“We talked about the camaraderie between the fire department, between their teammates, and a lot of it is the same,” said Pighetti. “These guys have put just as much hard work and determination into their career as I’ve put into my career to get to where we’ve ended up to this point.”

“It’s incredible when our warriors and their family members can come out on the field with professional baseball players and take some swings in the batting cages,” said Greg Monck, Alumni Manager for the Colorado Springs chapter of the Wounded Warrior Project. “It’s an awesome time for them and it helps get them out of the house and hang out with their families.”

For the Sox, an event such as the Heroes Classic batting practice allows the team to show gratitude for those who allow them to play their favorite game.

“For the players, it gives them a chance to touch base with people that allow us to have fun playing the sport that we get to play,” said Sweet. “It’s because of our warriors and the police and fire departments that we have the freedom to play baseball.”

Staci Johnson to Celebrate “Home Run For Life” Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Dodgers and INTEGRIS continue the 2017 “Home Run for Life” series Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark by recognizing Staci Johnson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year at the age of 36.

Johnson was proactive in her treatment after discovering an unusual lump in early 2016, and embraced positivity throughout her treatment at INTEGRIS Cancer Institute and INTEGRIS Comprehensive Breast Center.

The Bethany resident is now in remission, back to work and enjoying her time with her husband Mike and sons Hunter, 9, and Wyatt, 5, with a fresh perspective.

“Home Run For Life” recognizes individuals in the Oklahoma City community who have overcome a significant medical event with the help of their families, physicians and health care professionals. To symbolize the end of their battle against adversity, honorees take a home run “lap” around the bases during an in-game ceremony.

“We are proud to continue the Home Run For Life Series this season and honor some remarkable individuals in our community who have battled exceptional challenges with their health,” OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said. “Their resolve and courage offer great inspiration for us all and we are pleased to join with INTEGRIS to recognize their triumphs.”

In January 2016, Johnson noticed an unusual lump after exiting the shower. She made an appointment with her physician, but didn’t give it much thought otherwise as she had no history of breast cancer in her family.

An ultrasound, mammogram and biopsy followed in the coming weeks at the INTEGRIS Comprehensive Breast Center, and in February 2016, Johnson was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.

She allowed herself to be distraught for the next two days, but then decided that to beat this, she needed to keep a positive mimndset throughout the coming months.

“For the most part I didn’t let it get me down. I was very positive,” she said. “I had that initial couple of days, but then I just thought: ‘Nope we’re going to get this taken care of.'”

She started her first chemotherapy treatment March 10, 2016 at the INTEGRIS Cancer Institute and had eight rounds of chemotherapy total that lasted into July.

“They didn’t waste any time which is a blessing because they just took over,” Johnson said. “Your brain is muddled. There is so much information being fed to you that you just kind of follow the path and I knew I was in good hands.”

Her first four rounds of chemotherapy were strong and came every two weeks. She started to lose her hair before her second treatment and asked her husband to help shave her head. The last four rounds of chemo came every three weeks.

Exhaustion, aches and pains followed each round. She would go in for chemo on Thursdays and return to work on Tuesdays. Some days were more difficult than others.

She had surgery in September and then radiation treatments in November and December. She received the encouraging news that she was in remission in the fall of 2016.

Throughout her treatments, appointments and recovery, positivity and support enveloped her.

Johnson said the staff at INTEGRIS Cancer Institute became part of her family because of the encouragement and outstanding care they offered.

Her friends and family offered other forms of support, bringing food to her family, helping with shopping and assisting in keeping her sons’ lives as normal as possible through it all.

“It’s just so amazing that when you need it, there is so much compassion,” Johnson said.

Her illness initially forced her to slow down. But slowing down also brought her a new perspective and is a practice she continues today.

“Just being willing to say no and making certain things the priority and cherishing the moments you do have,” Johnson said. “That was my big thing. Those things you do pick to do with your friends and family, just cherishing them because life is so short.”
