Southpaw Asks Kids to “Hit the Books”

Southpaw 2.0 visited Big Island Elementary School Monday afternoon as part of the Hillcats “Hit the Books” Reading Program. The appearance marked Southpaw’s second public outing since he was introduced as the team’s new primary mascot January 9. Southpaw 2.0 made his public debut last week when he kicked off the “Hit the Books” Reading Program at Bass Elementary in Lynchburg.

Southpaw has already committed to visiting 31 schools over the next three months after traveling to 21 last year, and more schools continue to sign up on a regular basis. The bright-green, furry mascot will travel as far as 50 minutes away from Lynchburg City Stadium during his “Hit the Books” crusades.

“One of our organizational goals this offseason was to increase our community outreach in a number of areas,” said Hillcats President Chris Jones. “We’ve seen tremendous growth in our community outreach, beginning with our partnership with the Lynchburg Humane Society to kick off the year. Now we are expanding our support for local youth in the area, including a larger number of partnerships with little league teams as well as a greater number of schools participating in our reading program.”

In addition to increasing the number of participating schools, the Hillcats also worked with Lynchburg City Schools to write a new book that emphasizes the core values of Respect, Integrity, Learning and Teamwork. In “Southpaw Goes to School,” Southpaw practices each of the four values to “hit a home run.” Students learn about these four upstanding principles and how to apply them in life by following along as a Hillcats front office member reads the book and Southpaw acts it out on stage.

After learning about the importance of reading from Southpaw and the Hillcats staff, students have a chance to attend a Hillcats game by reading four books on their own. Once they do that, they receive two free General Admission tickets to one of five select Hillcats home games in April and May. The possible dates students can choose include a Fireworks Night and a fan giveaway night.

The Hillcats begin the 2017 season at home in a rematch of the 2016 Mills Cup Championship Series. Lynchburg will host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Thursday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m. The Hillcats have made the playoffs a franchise-record five straight seasons. Hillcats Partner With Lynchburg Humane Society

As part of the organization’s continued commitment to giving back to the community, the Lynchburg Hillcats proudly announced a new partnership for 2017 with the Lynchburg Humane Society Wednesday morning.

“I’m thrilled to be working with the Lynchburg Humane Society this upcoming season and beyond,” said Hillcats President Chris Jones. “This is a perfect way to start off 2017. One of my top priorities from day one has been strengthening the Hillcats presence in Lynchburg in terms of giving back to the community and supporting worthwhile causes. We laid a solid foundation toward meeting that objective last year. That put us in a position this season where we can create strong partnerships with other tremendous organizations, such as this one with the Lynchburg Humane Society.”

To initiate the new alliance, the Lynchburg Hillcats are sponsoring the adoption banner in the month of January. The Lynchburg Humane Society provides care and nurture for animals while providing a safe environment until they are adopted and taken home by a new owner. The building maintains regular hours every day of the week, including Saturday and Sunday, at its new location on Old Graves Mill Road. The Lynchburg Humane Society witnessed 3,254 adoptions last year.

“We are excited about all the opportunities to work with the Lynchburg Hillcats,” said Makena Yarbrough, Executive Director of the Lynchburg Humane Society. “This will not only provide exposure for adoptable pets and bring awareness to our organization, but it is also a great way to celebrate the bond between pets and family by going to the ballfield.”

Hillcats players and staff will be volunteering regularly at the Lynchburg Humane Society as part of the new relationship. Furthermore, the Hillcats and Lynchburg Humane Society will join in several promotions throughout the season, including a new Hillcats fixture at the ballpark known as “Meow Mondays.” In addition to other Monday-specific promotions that will spotlight the Lynchburg Humane Society, fans will be able to donate pet food for discounted admission at all Monday home games.

Along with the partnership, City Stadium will become a dog-friendly ballpark throughout the 2017 season, meaning Hillcats fans can bring their canines to all home games.

“As far as I know, we will be the first 100-percent dog-friendly ballpark for an entire season,” said Jones. “Virtually every team holds a ‘Bark in the Park’ Day at this point, and they are extremely popular with fans. In past years, the Hillcats have hosted more than one of these in the same season, which caused us as a staff to ask why we couldn’t do it more. Expanding ‘Bark in the Park’ to every home game seemed like a fun way to help grow awareness and signify this partnership with the Lynchburg Humane Society.”

The Hillcats are also working on logistics for a one-miler dog walk that will take place during the regular season to raise awareness for the Lynchburg Humane Society. Details for that event and many other components involving the partnership will be announced as they draw closer throughout the year. However, the first order of business between the Hillcats and Lynchburg Humane Society will be finalizing the search for Southpaw’s replacement next Monday.

“Anyone who has been following our social media accounts the past two months is aware that Southpaw is retiring after 22 amazing seasons as the Hillcats mascot,” said Jones. “Next Monday, Southpaw’s retirement becomes effective. I don’t want to reveal too much, but the Lynchburg Humane Society will play an integral part in the mascot transition, so I hope fans will check back Monday to see what happens. Again, we’re looking forward to a fun and beneficial relationship with the Lynchburg Humane Society.”

Season tickets and book ticket packages for 2017 are on sale now. Opening Day is set for Thursday, April 6, when the Hillcats begin at home against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in a rematch of the 2016 Mills Cup Championship.

Tides to continue youth field renovation project

Members of the Tides organization helped renovate the Gloucester Youth Baseball field in 2016.

The Norfolk Tides today announced the return of a contest in which a local youth field will be renovated by Tides groundskeepers and front office staff. This field makeover will include an upgrade to the playing surface and an improvement to existing dugouts, with the recipient of the makeover being determined by a fan vote on the Tides’ Facebook page.

“Our entire organization looks forward to this project each year” said Tides General Manager Joe Gregory. “We’ve been able to extend a helping hand to many outstanding communities, and it’s a great feeling to know that we’ve made a difference in the baseball experience for so many children across Hampton Roads.”

Those interested in having the Tides make over their facility should submit a picture of their field to Heather McKeating at HMckeating@norfolktides.com. Along with the photo, fans are asked to include a brief description of why their league’s field should receive this enhancement. The deadline to submit this information is February 13, with online voting taking place on the Tides’ Facebook page from February 20 to February 24.

2017 is the sixth consecutive year in which the Tides are renovating a local youth field. Over the first five years of the program, the Tides have renovated eight local fields: Ocean View Little League (Norfolk), Smithfield Recreation Association (Smithfield), Bennett’s Creek Little League (Suffolk), Phoebus Little League (Hampton), Shore Little League (Nassawadox), Cradock Little League (Portsmouth), Little Creek National (Norfolk) and Gloucester Youth Baseball (Gloucester).

The project is made possible thanks to the Tides Youth Baseball Fund, a program established by the Tides in 1990 as a way to raise money for youth baseball and softball programs in Hampton Roads. In addition to assisting with field renovations, the Youth Baseball Fund also helps local teams and leagues with travel expenses. The Youth Baseball Fund is partially financed by scoreboard announcements at Harbor Park throughout the season, and those wishing to make a donation directly to the Youth Baseball Fund can do so via norfolkides.com under the “community” section.

Volunteers from Safelite AutoGlass will join the Tides staff in assisting with the field renovation efforts, which will take place in April.

The Tides will play their first game of 2017 at Harbor Park on Friday, March 31st in an Exhibition Game against the Baltimore Orioles. Norfolk will then open its regular season on Thursday, April 6th with a 7:05 contest at Charlotte before kicking off the home portion of its schedule on Monday, April 10th with a 6:35 game vs. Gwinnett.

D-Braves donate to Danville Veterans Memorial Fund

DANVILLE, Va. – In recognition of Veterans Day, the Danville Braves presented the Danville Veteran’s Memorial Fund with a donation of over $1,200. The D-Braves raised the funds by auctioning off game-worn military appreciation jerseys from the 2016 season. A total of $2,419.04 was raised through the auction, with half being donated to the Danville Veteran’s Memorial Fund and half to the Camp Lejeune Fisher House.

The D-Braves wore the special military appreciation jerseys for each Friday home game in July during the 2016 season, as well as the team’s July 3rd contest. Those games were dubbed Military Appreciation Nights presented by Angus Heating and Air and Blue Ridge Beverage; all active and retired military members received free admission to the games.

“To be able to help maintain a memorial that honors the sacrifice and service of our nation’s military is the least we can do,” said Danville Braves General Manager David Cross. “The Danville Veteran’s Memorial is a lasting tribute to the men and women that have helped protect this great country.”

D-Braves present donation to Danville Cancer Association

DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville Braves presented a donation of nearly $1,300 to the Danville Cancer Association Thursday morning. The D-Braves raised $1,271.70 through the auction of game-used jerseys worn on the team’s Colon Cancer Awareness Night during the 2016 season.

“We’re proud to continue to support the Danville Cancer Association,” said Danville Braves General Manager David Cross. “The work that the Danville Cancer Association does to help support cancer patients in the area has a big impact on local families.”

2016 marked the sixth year in which the D-Braves wore and auctioned cancer awareness jerseys.

D-Braves nominated for Charles Murphy Patriot Award

DANVILLE, Va. – The Appalachian League announced its nominations for the Minor League Baseball Annual Awards Wednesday afternoon, with the Danville Braves earning the league’s nomination for the Charles Murphy Patriot Award. The award is presented to a team who demonstrates “outstanding support of and engagement with the United States Armed Forces and veterans, both at the ballpark and in the community.”

The D-Braves placed a strong focus on recognizing and honoring the military throughout the month of July during the 2016 season, with each Friday game and the team’s July 3rd contest being dubbed Military Appreciation Night presented by Angus Heating and Air and Blue Ridge Beverage. The Braves’ wore special military-themed jerseys on each of the Military Appreciation Nights, with the game-used jerseys being auctioned off to benefit the Danville Veterans Memorial and the Fort Bragg Fisher House.

Additionally, the D-Braves welcomed members of the Dan River High School J-ROTC for the National Anthem prior to each game on Military Appreciation Nights.

“We are honored to represent the Appalachian League for this award,” said D-Braves General Manager David Cross. “The U.S. Military and their families have provided more than we can ever repay, and honoring them in the ways we have is the least we can do.”

This year’s Charles Murphy Patriot Award will be presented at the 2016 Baseball Winter Meetings to be held in National Harbor, Maryland from December 4-8.

Missing children from D-Braves’ BairFind sign found

DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville Braves are pleased to announce that two of the missing children featured on the BairFind sign at Legion Field have been found. Maria de los Angeles Avendano Ramos and Peter Van der Linden have both been located and returned home safely after their pictures were featured on signage at the D-Braves’ stadium throughout the 2016 season.

The search continues for Samantha Clarke and Shimeaka Gibson, the two remaining missing children featured on the D-Braves’ BairFind sign in 2016. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of a missing child is encouraged to call 1-800-THE-LOST.

The BairFind Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to locating missing children that has partnered with Minor League Baseball to promote its efforts. The organization works with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to feature missing children specific to an MiLB team’s geographic location on signage at ballparks across the country.

Specialty Jersey Night to Honor Paralyzed Veterans of America

The Bristol Pirates are excited to host the first-ever specialty jersey night at Boyce Cox Field next Thursday, August 18, when the Pirates play host to their division-rival Johnson City Cardinals.

Pirates’ players and staff will sport special jerseys for the one game, in support of the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), courtesy of the generous support of Food City.

NASCAR legend and PVA supporter Richard Petty will be on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, along with NASCAR driver Aric Almirola and the president of the PVA, Bill Lawson.

Following the game, Petty and the player or staff member wearing each jersey will autograph the jerseys.

During the game, fans can bid on the jersey of their favorite players in a silent auction conducted in the ballpark pavilion on the third-base side of the field. Following the game, until the end of the Pirates’ regular season, bidding will continue online at www.milbauctions.com.

Gates will open early at the special time of 4:30 p.m., for this game, which promises to draw a large crowd. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m., and fans are invited to stay after the game and enjoy the transporter parade as it makes its way down Euclid Avenue, past the ballpark. It is expected that the parade will also feature fireworks.

“We are tremendously excited to host this event, and the King of NASCAR, Richard Petty, and to be able to call attention to the wonderful work the PVA does across the country,” noted Pirates’ General Manager Mahlon Luttrell. “We would not have been able to do this without the wonderful support of our friends at Food City.”

Fans urged to become someone’s superhero on Superhero Night

SALEM, Va. – The Salem Red Sox have announced a partnership with Feeding America of Southwest Virginia that includes a food drive to be held on Superhero Night, Saturday, May 23, when the Red Sox take on the Winston-Salem Dash.

Fans are asked to bring non-perishable food items to LewisGale Field when they arrive for the 6 p.m. contest. The Sox and Feeding America are encouraging fans to bring a box of macaroni and cheese (or other boxed pasta) to serve as a noisemaker during the game and then donate to Feeding America after the game.

Tickets for the game are available at salemsox.com. Fans who pre-purchase their tickets online not only will save $2 over the walk-up price, but will be able to donate $2 to Feeding America by using the promo code: FOOD.

Salem Red Sox Make Record Donation to Susan G. Komen

Annual Pink in the Park weekend proceeds donated to charity

SALEM, Va. – The Salem Red Sox are pleased to announce that a record donation will be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure as a result of the extremely successful Pink in the Park Weekend.

This year, the Red Sox will be donating $4,652.27 to the non-profit organization. This amount comes from two silent auctions: Saturday night’s pink jerseys and Sunday’s pink bats. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from pink paraphernalia that was sold at the park this past weekend was included.

This year’s donation is the largest the Salem Red Sox have made in the eight-year history of the Pink in the Park series. Over the previous seven years, the Red Sox have donated $21,000 to the organization.

9th Annual Swing for a Cure Slated for May 23rd

The Hillcats will have everyone wearing pink on Saturday, May 23rd with the 9th Annual “Swing For A Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Centra’s Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center! Proceeds from this event will benefit the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation.

General admission tickets for the 6:30pm game against the Frederick Keys will be $11, with a portion of each ticket being donated to the fight against cancer. Plus, the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free pink t-shirt! All Hillcats players will don pink commemorative jerseys which will then be up for bid during a silent auction during the game.

It’s estimated that there will be over 230,000 reported new cases of invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2015 and as many as 1 in 800 women in Virginia alone, may be diagnosed each year. The Susan G. Komen Foundation was created in 1982 by Komen’s sister and has since raised $2.5 billion for research, treatments, and support for survivors.

Salem Red Sox to Honor Military Members With Trading Card Set

Fans encouraged to submit local Military members through June 26

SALEM, Va. – The Salem Red Sox are excited to announce that as part of the season-long Freedom Friday series, the team will honor local military members with a trading card set on Military Appreciation Day in August.

Starting with tonight’s contest, fans can submit a family member or friend from the Roanoke area that has served or is currently serving in any branch of the United States armed forces. Submissions will be accepted at the guest services booth on the concourse at LewisGale Field on the following Freedom Fridays: May 1, May 8, May 22, June 5, June 12, and June 26. Submissions need to include a photo and background information of the military member.

The submissions will then be sent to a selection committee and the final list of members that will be included in the trading card set will be announced in early July. The entire set will be given away on Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 29. In addition, those members selected will be honored with an on-field ceremony prior to the game.

Not all submissions to the Red Sox will be selected due to limited space in the trading card set. Any active, retired or deceased member of the military is eligible for submission and subsequent selection. Fans that are unable to attend the selected games, but would still like to submit a military member can do so by e-mailing military@salemsox.com.

4th Annual Paint the Park Purple Night is May 1st

The Lynchburg Hillcats are teaming up with Relay for Life of Lynchburg and the American Cancer Society on Friday, May 1st at 6:30pm for the 4th Annual Paint the Park Purple Night and T-Shirt Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans presented by Gastroenterology Associates of Central Virginia!

Gates will open at 5:30pm and general Admission Tickets for the game will be $11 with a portion of every ticket sold benefiting the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life of Lynchburg will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 and is an overnight relay style walk-a-thon that raises money for the American Cancer Society, as well as honors cancer survivors and remembers those lost to cancer. Local participants have been able to sell tickets to Paint the Park Purple Night as a part of their fundraising for their relay team. Fans will also be able to participate in a 50/50 raffle during the game, proceeds of which will also benefit the American Cancer Society.

Approximately 1,596,000 people were diagnosed with some form of cancer in the United States last year and it is estimated that over 41,000 new cancer cases will be reported in 2013 for the state of Virginia alone. The American Cancer Society raises funds worldwide for research programs to find cures for all forms of cancer, and helps those diagnosed to find treatments and support. Red Sox to Host Kids Take Over the Park Day on June 14

Kids ages 5-12 given opportunity to run the show for Salem Sox game

SALEM, Va. – The Salem Red Sox and Blue Eagle Credit Union are teaming up for the first-ever Kids Take Over the Ballpark day on Sunday, June 14 at LewisGale Field. When the Red Sox take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks at 4:05 p.m., nearly 30 kids ages 5-12 will have the opportunity to run the show at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Children selected to participate in the event will have the opportunity to shadow one of the following positions: on-field host, public address announcer, grounds crew, diamond crew, radio broadcaster, box office representative, bat boy and camera operator. A casting call is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 at 5 p.m. prior to the Red Sox game against the Potomac Nationals. A table will be set up prior to the game for those interested in auditioning.

In addition, there will be a social media audition for kids who would like to help manage the Salem Red Sox for a day. All children interested in auditioning for manager should post a one minute video explaining why they would like to be selected and post it on the Salem Red Sox Facebook page or mention the Salem Red Sox on Twitter.

7th Annual Autism Awareness Night is April 18th

With 1 in 110 children in the United States diagnosed with some form of Autism, the Hillcats are lending a hand to offer awareness and support to this cause in 2015. The 7th Annual Autism Awareness Night presented by Physicians Treatment Center is scheduled for Saturday, April 18th and will raise money for Commonwealth Autism Services.

As many as 75,000 in Virginia are affected with this developmental disability and Commonwealth Autism Services is an organization that strives to enrich the lives of those in Virginia with autism, throughout their entire lifespan through statewide services. GA tickets are $11 and two dollars of each ticket sold for April 18th’s game will be donated to this organization.

This year’s Autism Awareness Night presented by Physicians Treatment Center is slated for 6:30pm when the Hillcats will take on the Potomac Nationals at City Stadium. Plus, the first 1,000 fans through the gates that evening will receive a free commemorative t-shirt! Along with donating a portion of the ticket costs, proceeds from a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and sponsor donations will also be donated during an in-game check presentation. Last year’s Autism Awareness Night raised over $12,000!
