Maimonides Park to Host Pete Alonso Homers for Heroes Charity Event September 27

Join us at Maimonides Park on Monday, September 27th for The Battle of the Boroughs presented by Citi. Watch the top youth baseball players from around NYC compete in a home run derby hosted by Pete Alonso. The event will start at 7:00 PM with gates opening at 6:00 PM. Pete will be joined by other surprise guests that are sure to make the night AMAZIN’. Pete – the 2-time MLB Home Run Derby Champion – will even take some swings himself. Plus there will be fan prizes, giveaways and more.

Captains announce Trick or Treat at Classic Park, powered by NOPEC

 

(Eastlake, OH) – The Lake County Captains are excited to announce a brand new Halloween-themed event coming to Classic Park this Fall. On Saturday, October 16, the Captains will host a special Trick or Treat at the ballpark event, powered by NOPEC.

The event will run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature trick or treat stations, costume contests, photo opportunities, children’s characters, inflatables and more. Admission for the Captains Trick or Treat event is free.

Wilmington Blue Rocks Annual Judy Johnson Night Helps Keep His and Negro League Baseball’s Legacy Alive

 

On Saturday August 28, the Wilmington Blue Rocks held their 25th annual Judy Johnson Night. The night allowed those in attendance to honor and learn more about both the Hall of Fame third baseman the field is named after and Negro League Baseball.

With the work of the Judy Johnson Memorial Foundation and their Executive Director Andrea McCoy-Carty, the event had booths all around the concourse that had Negro League Baseball memorabilia and a pregame ceremony that honored three former Negro League players.

The three players honored by the Wilmington City Council, Pedro Sierra, Sam Allen, and Leon Day, who’s widow, Geraldine Day was there to represent him, were ones who made a name for themselves through Negro League baseball during the mid-1900s.

Since Negro League Baseball is such a big part of their lives, events like these are important to them, to make sure the legacy of this league is kept.

“We have to do as much as we can because there’s not that many of us alive. In 2000, the Negro League Museum had a reunion, the legacy reunion, there was 145. Right now there is maybe scrapping 20,” Sierra said. “So it is very important that this upcoming generation knows its importance.”

All three of Sierra, Allen, and Mrs. Day have been coming to the Blue Rocks celebration of Judy Johnson for many years now, to help not only keep the legacy of the Negro League alive, but the Johnson’s legacy alive as well.

“It is a great event,” Allen said. “And to honor Judy Johnson, one of the greats, matter of fact, a Hall of Famer.”

Along with the former Negro League players, there were also Board Members from the Judy Johnson Memorial Foundation at the game who have extensive knowledge of the league and Johnson’s career and life.

Jim Knotts was a close friend of Johnson’s after his playing career, so an event like this is very important for him, especially since many people might not know about one of the most successful ball players from the state of Delaware.

“It is an honor to be anywhere that is honoring Judy. Our goal is to keep his name alive as best we can,” Knotts said. “Delaware knew very little about Judy Johnson and naturally he is the only one who is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, in fact he is in several.”

What Knotts hopes people know about Johnson goes beyond his skills on the baseball field though.

“Most of all, he was a perfect gentleman,” Knotts said. “I learned a lot from him, just how to be a gentleman. He was well loved by those who knew him, highly respected.”

Ray Banks, another Board Member and the founder of the Hubert V. Simmons Museum of Negro Leagues Baseball in Maryland, echoed the Knotts sediment.

“Judy Johnson, as far as I’m concerned, was one of the best third baseman to play the game,” Banks said. “He was a wonderful gentleman and a great role model for any of the youth, no matter what color you are, he was a good role model for all of us.”

The importance of this event that has been held by the Blue Rocks for 25 years and all events that celebrates both Judy Johnson and Negro League Baseball can not be understated, as Pedro Sierra explains.

“It is a great honor to honor a great player,” Sierra said. “I would say I rode the shoulders of Judy Johnson and all of those who came before me. And I am very proud to be apart of that legacy and one thing I think, in my opinion, people need to know that Negro League Baseball is one of the most important chapters in the history of baseball.”

Online Auction To Benefit Tropical Storm Ida Relief

 

Bridgewater, New Jersey – The Somerset Patriots, the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, will host an online fundraiser through MiLB Auctions to benefit those affected by Tropical Storm Ida in Central New Jersey. THE AUCTION CAN BE FOUND HERE! and will run through 10:00 pm on Sunday, September 26th.

Net proceeds from the auction will benefit the Somerset Patriots Children’s Educational and Sportsmanship Foundation, which will then donate to multiple Somerset County based non-profits that are working to help residents and businesses were hit hardest by the flooding caused by the remnants of the hurricane.

The Patriots collected donations of memorabilia, experiences, and items from sports clubs, team partners, and organizations looking to help in the efforts. Highlights of the auction include a Derek Jeter autographed bat inscribed “HOF 2020,” a game-used base from the 2021 MLB All-Star Game, and four tickets to Hamilton on Broadway with a pre-show dinner at Bond 45.

In addition to autographed items from Patriots, top Yankees prospects, and players from Northeast League teams, the auction will include items signed by Saquon Barkley (New York Giants), Julius Randle (New York Knicks), Martin Brodeur (New Jersey Devils), Greg Schiano (Rutgers Football), as well as baseball greats Yogi Berra, Don Mattingly, and Joe Torre.

Experiences also include a foursome at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, tickets to three Rutgers Football games, and a shotgun or rifle lesson at Hudson Farm.

“We’d like to thank everyone that took the time to help our fundraising efforts for the community,” said Patriots President/General Manager Patrick McVerry. “We got some really nice items donated from a lot of organizations that understood that time was of the essence to help those struggling to get their lives back together in our area. We are hoping that people will be generous and bid on these great items to allow us to make a difference for those in need.”

More items may be added to the auction in the coming days as more donations are still coming in to the team.

Timothy Stone to Celebrate “Home Run For Life” with INTEGRIS and OKC Dodgers Friday

 

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Dodgers and INTEGRIS Health conclude the 2021 “Home Run For Life” series Friday by honoring Timothy Stone of Jenks, Okla., during the Dodgers’ 7:05 p.m. ¡Celebración Cielo Azul! game against Round Rock at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Stone had a physically demanding job working on cars and was in excellent shape traveling the country as a competitive bare-knuckle fighter for 20 years. He rarely slowed down, even for several years after being diagnosed at the age of 40 with cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart that makes pumping blood throughout the body difficult. Then at the age of 49, Stone collapsed while mowing his backyard in Jenks, Okla., and his health quickly spiraled downward starting in March 2015.

Stone would endure multiple surgeries, including five open heart surgeries and a heart transplant at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center. He would spend about four months in the hospital in Oklahoma City.

Now almost six years later at the age of 55, Stone is back living life with vigor and new perspective with the goal of helping others facing similar difficult journeys thanks to the care he received at INTEGRIS Health.

“I owe them everything,” Stone said of the staff at INTEGRIS Health.

“Life is precious. We have all heard that a million times, but I think we look at it a little differently now.”

“Home Run For Life” recognizes individuals in the Oklahoma City community who have overcome a significant medical event with the help of their families, physicians and health care professionals. To symbolize the end of their battle against adversity, honorees take a prerecorded home run “lap” around the bases during an in-game ceremony.

“’Home Run For Life’ allows us to uniquely recognize some amazing Oklahomans who have endured significant health challenges,” OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said. “Each month during the baseball season, we are proud to partner with INTEGRIS Health to honor the perseverance and courage displayed by these individuals and to help inspire others with their incredible stories.”

After collapsing in his yard in the spring of 2015, Stone’s wife Leslie took him to the hospital in Tulsa. A series of serious health setbacks followed throughout the next five months. Eventually with the right side of his heart shutting down, he was brought to INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City in August 2015.

When he arrived, he faced seemingly insurmountable odds with a prognosis of a five to 10 percent chance of survival without a heart transplant.

He had 12 surgeries, including five open heart surgeries.

He typically weighed around 175 pounds, but in October 2015 was down to about 118 pounds and then came the devastating news that he had about eight days to live.

With three days left and his organs shutting down, he said his goodbyes to his wife and children telling then how much he loved them.

Everything changed on Oct. 29, 2015 when they found a heart that was a perfect match.

The sixth anniversary of his heart transplant is soon approaching and Stone now mentors others going through transplants.

He was fortunate to have the unending support of the INTEGRIS Health staff, his wife Leslie, daughter, son and family throughout his journey back to health, but knows not everyone is so lucky.

“We were blessed to have a lot of great people and a lot of loving people help us along the way,” he said.

The Oklahoma City Dodgers will take the field as Cielo Azul de Oklahoma City for their upcoming home series against Los Chupacabras de Round Rock starting Thursday. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday night’s games have a scheduled 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and on Friday, a mystery bobblehead, presented by Lime, will be given out to the first 1,000 fans in attendance. Fireworks are also scheduled to follow Friday’s game. 2021 LoanMart Scholarship Winners Announced

 

RANCHO CUCAMONGA – For the ninth consecutive year, LoanMart and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have partnered to award a total of three $1,000 scholarships to local college-bound students.

Selected based on the criteria of leadership, community involvement and character, this year’s competitive pool of applicants submitted personal statements, letters of recommendation and records of academic performance.

“The Quakes are proud to continue to team with LoanMart and reward these three exemplary students,” said Quakes Vice President – General Manager Grant Riddle. “With so many impressive and deserving applications submitted, this year’s decision process was a challenge, but we’re very confident in the future success awaiting these accomplished students.”

All three recipients finished high school with GPAs of 4.0 or higher and were members of their school’s National Honor Society.

As a notable and talented flutist, Aichlmayer was chosen to perform in many area honor bands, including the iconic Rose Parade Marching Band. She plans to study Biological Sciences at UC Irvine this fall.

Headed to Stanford to pursue an English degree, Melillo was recognized for his outstanding high school career and selected as student of the year in multiple advanced placement subjects.

The Quakes will announce Fochtman, Aichlmayer, and Melillo’s selection on social media.

Beloit Snappers and MILB Holding 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

 

Never Forget.

Twenty years ago, the world came to a halt. Flights 11 and 175 were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Centers in New York City. Flight 77 was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon. Flight 93 was hijacked, but after passengers and crew re-took control, the plane crash-landed in a Pennsylvania field leaving no survivors. 2996 Americans lost their lives that day, which includes the lives of hundreds of first responders.

The Beloit Snappers, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball, will honor the lives of those lost on 9/11 with several gestures of remembrance.

Before Saturday’s game, the Snappers will pause for a moment of silence. The Snappers grounds crew will stencil in 9/11 behind home plate and place a fireman and policeman hat on either side during the moment of silence. First responders will also be recognized prior to the National Anthem.

Deputy Chief Jason Griffin and Lieutenant Michael Cullen from the City of Beloit Fire Department Honor Guard and Officer Kristian Zimmerman from the City of Beloit Police Department will assist with the raising of the American Flag during the ceremony. Retired Army Sergeant Bill Schenk will raise the American Flag. The flag will be lowered to half staff to honor the fallen men and women who passed on 9/11.

Bees to Honor First Responders on Sept. 11

 

SALT LAKE CITY (Sept. 10, 2021) – The Salt Lake Bees have several events planned to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Bees will start the day by turning on the Smith’s Ballpark stadium lights at 6:46 a.m. (MT), the time American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The lights at the stadium will remain on for 24 hours to honor the victims of 9/11.

Prior to the game, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall will join the Bees in leading a moment of silence. An honor guard of Salt Lake City Fire and Police will conduct a flag ceremony, and the Salt Lake City Fire Department Choir will perform the National Anthem.

Tickets for the game on Saturday are half price for first responders using a link sent to them by Mayor Mendenhall and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson as a thank you for their sacrifice and service.

The Bees will also be collecting food and clothing donations throughout the day at Smith’s Ballpark to benefit Utah Food Bank and Shelter the Homeless as part of Larry H. Miller’s Driven to Assist program. Fans that bring a donation will receive two ticket vouchers for any Bees game during the 2021 season. All non-perishable food items will be accepted, but among the most needed items are:

· peanut butter

· mac & cheese

· canned meats

· canned fruits

· boxed meals.

New socks and underwear or gently used clothing (including coats and closed-toe shoes) for children and adults will be accepted, and there is an urgent need for menstrual products.

First pitch against the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Saturday night is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Smith’s Ballpark.

JERSEY SHORE, NJ – The BlueClaws and RWJBarnabas Health will partner on a Blood Drive at FirstEnergy Park on Monday, September 20th from 12:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

Pre-registration is strongly recommended and can be made by clicking here or calling 732-235-8100 ext 221 or 248. There is limited availability within each 15-minute time slot to ensure social distancing protocols will be followed. While the need for blood is typically highest in the summer, the COVID-19 pandemic has further depleted the blood supply, making drives like these all the more important.

All donors are instructed to eat and drink prior to the donation and to bring a photo ID. Masks or cloth face coverings are required for entry. Those that have been exposed to or cared for a positive COVID-19 patient within 28 days prior to the drive are not eligible to donate.

A screening will take place on the ground level before donors enter the lobby outside the ballpark.

On Saturday, September 11 the Rocket City Trash Pandas, in conjunction with AUSA, are proud to host a special Tribute Night at Toyota Field as we honor and remember our heroes in recognition of the 20th Anniversary.

This tribute day will feature events throughout the day, capped off by a softball game featuring the USA Patriots against the BeArded WARRIORS, a dazzling post-game fireworks display, and a live concert after the game with Brandon Elder. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 on the day of the event.

Pre-Game Activities

  • 9/11 Memorial Service: Madison Fire and Police departments will be hosting a memorial service beginning at 8:30 a.m. in honor of all of those who perished on September 11, 2001.

Helpful Home Runs: Highmark partnering with SWB to benefit local food bank

 

MOOSIC, PA (September 9, 2021) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are proud to partner with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield to raise money for National Hunger Awareness Month. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield will donate $10 for every home run that the RailRiders hit during the 2021 season to the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank in Pittston.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has hit 120 home runs so far this season, putting the current donation total at $1,200. The RailRiders have 21 games remaining this season, including the remainder of the regular season and The Final Stretch.

“We are proud to partner with our friends at the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on this important initiative,” said Brian Rinker, Market President at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. “Now more than ever, we want to support local organizations that address hunger and food insecurity in our community. We wish the RailRiders the best of luck for a successful finish to the season!”

In our region, one in six children and one in eight adults face hunger each day. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank is a Feeding America partner and works to reduce hunger and promote proper nutrition in addition to preventing food waste. The Food Bank serves four counties in Northeast Pennsylvania: Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, and Wyoming.

Storm Chasers and Union Omaha Announce Hurricane Ida Relief Drive

 

The Omaha Storm Chasers and Union Omaha announced today the launch of the Hurricane Ida Relief Drive which will collect essential items to be distributed to those affected by Hurricane Ida. The drive is set to begin on Saturday, September 11 at the Union Omaha soccer match at Werner Park and concludes following the Storm Chasers home game on September 19.

The Storm Chasers and Union Omaha have partnered with NRG Media and Werner Enterprises to help spread the word and get the donated items transported to High Voltage, a New Orleans based non-profit providing programs and support to the local New Orleans area. All items can be donated at Werner Park during designated drop off windows:

Sat., Sept. 11 – 4-7:30pm, Union Omaha game

Tues., Sept. 14 – 5:30-7:30pm, Omaha Storm Chasers game

Wed., Sept. 15 – 5:30-7:30pm, Omaha Storm Chasers game

Thurs., Sept. 16 – 5:30-7:30pm, Omaha Storm Chasers game

Fri., Sept. 17 – 5:30-7:30pm, Omaha Storm Chasers game

M-Braves, MDPS hosting First Responder & Military Appreciation Night on Saturday, 9/11

 

PEARL, MS – On Saturday, September 11, the Mississippi Braves, in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, and commissioner Sean Tindell, will remember and honor the bravery of American citizens and first responders on the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with special pregame events, videos, and patriotic post-game fireworks.

All first responders, active-duty and retired military, and Mississippi Department of Public Safety employees will receive two complimentary tickets to the 6:05 pm game against the Montgomery Biscuits. The tickets will be available at the Trustmark Park box office by simply presenting your work ID or law enforcement badge.

“This will be the first time in team history the M-Braves have had a home game at Trustmark Park on September 11,” added Pete Laven, vice president, and general manager of the Mississippi Braves. “As an organization, we want to pay our respects to all of those that lost their lives on that day 20 years ago and honor them and our local first responders through our national pastime.”

Before the first pitch, the Mississippi Highway Patrol Honor Guard will present the evening’s colors, and the 172nd Airlift Wing of the Mississippi Air National Guard will perform a pregame flyover.
