Dragons Mascots, Green Team Performing at Local Schools

Dayton, Ohio-Opening night for the 2020 baseball season at Day Air Ballpark is nine weeks away, but Dayton Dragons mascots Heater and Gem along with the Dragons Green Team are already bringing the excitement of baseball season to local elementary schools. For the eighth straight year, the Dragons entertainment team is performing assemblies at Miami Valley elementary schools. The program continues into April.

Each 30-minute interactive, fun, high-energy performance includes a visit by Heater or Gem and members of the Green Team, the Dragons signature group that facilitates skits, contests, and sing-a-longs during Dragons games at Day Air Ballpark. Each assembly in 2020 focuses on “Healthy Habits,” making smart food choices and being physically active. The performances, typically held in the school gymnasium, include some of the same entertainment skits seen at the ballpark, plus some new material designed specifically for the schools.

All Dragons assemblies are performed free of charge for schools that sign up. Participating elementary schools on board so far stretch from Springboro to Sidney.

The assemblies provide an introduction to the Dayton Dragons School Program, an incentive-based school fundraiser that provides prizes to students and allows the schools to keep a portion of ticket sales to Dragons games.

The Dragons are providing prizes as part of the program including team merchandise, an invitation to a Donatos Pizza Party with Dragons players, a Dragons Frisch’s Kids Club membership, and the grand prize, a Google Chromebook.

The Dragons 2020 Opening Night game is set for Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Day Air Ballpark against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate).

Register Now for the 2020 Meijer Baseball Academy

Open to kids ages 6 to 12, the Meijer Baseball Academy is a three-day camp, taught by South Bend Cubs players and coaches.

SOUTH BEND, IN – Registration is now open for the 2020 Meijer Baseball Academy, a baseball clinic taught by South Bend Cubs players and coaches. Two, three-day sessions will be held at Four Winds Field July 22-24 and August 5-7.

“These camps are one of the highlights of the year for our players,” said South Bend Cubs Director of Media and Promotions Chris Hagstrom-Jones. “I’m in my sixth year of managing the Baseball Academy and every year, our players ask me to participate. They love being able to pass on what they have learned throughout their careers and help some of our more advanced academy members take their game to the next level.”

Over the course of the three-day camp, participants will learn about hitting, pitching, fielding (infield and outfield), catching, and base running. Registration is open to kids ages 6 to 12. Due to the high number of participants and to provide proper instruction, each Baseball Academy session is capped at 85 kids. Parents and guardians only need to register for one camp as the same skills are taught in both sessions.

All attendees will receive a Meijer Baseball Academy t-shirt, a South Bend Cubs hat, lunch after each day of camp, and four (4) tickets to a South Bend Cubs game where all academy campers will participate in a pre-game recognition on the field. The registration fee for one, three-day session is $125.00 per child.

Check-in for the first day of each session will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET. Camps will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., with lunch at 11:50 a.m. The deadline to register for either camp is June 22. Payments can be mailed or dropped off at the South Bend Cubs main office at Four Winds Field. Registration is not complete until payment has been received.

Through the South Bend Cubs Facebook and Twitter pages, Meijer will hold a contest to award free admission to four lucky winners. Contest details will be available on the Cubs social media pages in March and April.

TinCaps Holding National Anthem Auditions for 2020 Season

Register for Tryouts at Parkview Field on Feb. 18, 20, and 22

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Fort Wayne TinCaps are set to host auditions to perform the National Anthem before a game at Parkview Field during the 2020 season.

Singers, instrumentalists, and groups are welcomed to try out. Auditions will be held at Parkview Field on Tuesday, Feb. 18 (4-6 p.m.), Thursday, Feb. 20 (4-6 p.m.), and Saturday, Feb. 22 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.). Those interested in trying out MUST schedule a tryout time in advance by contacting Sarah Kendall at 260-407-2808 or kendall@tincaps.com.

Note: In recent years, all tryout spots have been filled within 24-48 hours. Therefore, if interested in auditioning, schedule a tryout slot as quickly as possible.

Keep in mind, not everyone who tries out will earn an opportunity to perform before a game. Tryout participants will be evaluated by TinCaps staff members and local musicians.

Those who are selected to perform the National Anthem at one of the team’s 70 scheduled regular season games will receive four tickets to the game at which they perform. (Click here for the team’s 2020 schedule.)

Opening Day 2020 at Parkview Field is Monday, April 13 (6:05 p.m.) when the TinCaps host the Cincinnati Reds-affiliated Dayton Dragons.

CareSource Continues Partnership with Dragons to Salute Area Veterans

Dayton, Ohio–CareSource, a nonprofit multistate health plan, is partnering with the Dayton Dragons for the second year in a row for the CareSource Veteran Salute. The program is an extension of CareSource’s commitment to improve the lives of veterans and their families through innovative programs and partnerships to support their health and well-being.

CareSource’s Veteran Salute is open to any living military veteran in the Miami Valley. Five veterans will be selected from entries submitted between February 4, 2020 and June 30, 2020. Selected honorees will be recognized at a Dayton Dragons home game during an inning break at Day Air Ballpark, April through August 2020.

Each veteran will receive VIP treatment during their night, including pregame activities, in-game recognition, seating in a luxury suite at the ballpark, a special gift and more.

“At CareSource, we lead with heart. We see our service members, past and present, as the heartbeat of our nation and we are proud to partner with the Dayton Dragons to recognize our local veterans. This program is a way to bring their amazing stories of service to audiences across the region and thank all veterans for their valuable contributions,” said Rachel Goodspeed, Director of Veteran Relations and Outreach.

A look back to our veterans who were recognized during the 2019 season through CareSource’s Veteran Salute Program:

Robert Looper – U.S. Marine Corp, Korean War Veteran. Robert Looper joined the Marine Corps after graduating high school in 1949, and was sent to Korea once the Korean War began. Looper and his brigade survived negative 40-degree temperatures in the Taebaek Mountains, where 15,000 Marines fought over 200,000 Chinese. Looper participated in every single major battle in Korea and was also a Prisoner of War for 17 days before escaping. Looper was awarded the Purple Heart for his time in Korea.

Daniel and Nicole Powers – U.S. Air Force, Desert Storm Veterans. Husband and wife Daniel and Nicole Powers are no strangers to the military. Both joined the U.S. Air Force in college, and met while deployed in Iraq in 2006. Nicole was deployed multiple places including Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Iraq. During Daniel’s almost six years of deployment overseas, Daniel was an intelligence collector, where he would visit towns and gather human intelligence from local shops and people. Both have been deployed a number of times, and have over 40 years of combined service in the U.S. military.

John Brown – U.S. Army, World War II, Korean War, & Vietnam War Veteran. John Brown joined the Army when he was 18 years old, and is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. During his career, Brown was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for reviewing and preparing the daily summary of intelligence that was presented to the high-level staff, including President Nixon. Brown had top-secret clearance in the Counterintelligence Corp for most of his service career, and served in the Army for almost 30 years.

Gene Camp – U.S. Marines, Vietnam War Veteran. Gene Camp joined the Marines in 1968 and was sent to fight in the Vietnam War. On his last patrol before he was scheduled to go back home to the U.S., Camp’s battalion was ambushed and Camp was severely injured in an explosion. Camp was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1973 and was awarded three Purple Hearts for his time in Vietnam and has over 17 years of service.

Ed Damron – U.S. Army, Vietnam War Veteran. Ed Damron enlisted with the United States Army in September of 1970 at the age of 23 and was sent to fight in the Vietnam War. On September 6, 1971, Damron’s helicopter went down in the middle of a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) base camp with 5,000 enemy soldiers. Damron saved the lives of his helicopter pilot and gunner and hid in the enemy camp for over three hours before help arrived. Because of his heroic actions on that day, Damron was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star, and later was awarded the Bronze Star.

South Bend Cubs Welcome National Anthem Auditions for Upcoming 2020 Season

SOUTH BEND, IN – Auditions and applications are now being accepted for individuals and groups to perform the National Anthem at Four Winds Field prior to a 2020 South Bend Cubs home game.

Audition Requirements:

All auditions must be submitted as a video. Audio files, tapes, or CDs will not be accepted. Videos will be accepted as a downloadable file, video link such as YouTube or Google Drive, or DVD. Videos can also be recorded on a mobile device. The 2020 audition form must accompany your submission. Performances of the National Anthem are not to exceed two minutes. All vocal auditions must be performed a cappella (no musical accompaniment). Instrumental performances will be accepted. Those who audition in groups must include all members in the audition video.

Please send all electronic auditions to marketing@southbendcubs.com. Mailed auditions should be sent to South Bend Cubs, National Anthem Audition, 501 W South St. South Bend, IN 46601. Audition drop-offs can be submitted at the same address.

The last day to submit 2020 National Anthem auditions is Monday, March 2, 2020. Applicants are asked to submit their audition video via email or DVD by dropping off at the Four Winds Field main office. Once submitted, auditions will go through a careful judging process. Final decisions will be made in March and a member of the South Bend Cubs staff will reach out to those who have been selected.

The South Bend Cubs open the 2020 season at Four Winds Field on April 9 against the Lake County Captains. Opening Night will feature a special presentation celebrating the 2019 Midwest League Championship. Additional details on the celebration will be released in the coming weeks.

Timber Rattlers Job Fair to Be Held on February 24

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are looking for you to join their team! The Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers will host a Job Fair for prospective game day employees for the 2020 season on Monday, February 24 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event will be held in the Fox Communities Credit Union Fox Club at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Timber Rattlers will be accepting applications and conducting on-site interviews for part-time, seasonal, game day positions during the job fair. Here is a complete listing of jobs available this season:

Stadium Operations and Customer Service Game Day/Evening Positions:

Custodial Crew – Responsible for cleaning the stadium following games, special events, banquets, etc. and as needed throughout the stadium.

Snake Pit Team Store – The Timber Rattlers merchandise store is in need of helpful workers.

Security – Responsible for fan safety. Must be over 21, with some experience.

Ticket Sellers – Prepare and sell all game day and advance tickets via phone, mail, and window with an emphasis on efficiency, accuracy, and service. Responsible for all accounting of ticket inventory, including coupons, vouchers and promotional tickets. Computer literate due to ticketing software.

Ticket Takers – Scan tickets and welcome fans as they enter the ballpark.

Ushers – Responsibilities include pre-game prep, greeting and assisting fans to their seats, watch crowd for problems or injuries during game, assist fans safely out at the end of the game.

Concessions Game Day/Evening Positions:

Kitchen managers, Cooks & Kitchen Staff – Primary responsibilities include planning, preparation and cooking of meals for baseball games, banquet events and special events. A basic understanding of the food service industry is preferred but not necessary. These individuals will need to be available for both day and night baseball games during the week and weekends so a flexible schedule is important. Availability starting in April.

Servers – Looking for those who are interested working PM’s and weekends but availability during the daytime is a plus. Must be 18, with some server experience. Completion of liquor license course a plus but not required. Availability starting in April.

Bartenders – Flexible with hours, but primarily looking for those who are interested working PM’s and weekends. Availability during the daytime is a plus. Must be 18, experience preferred but not required. Must complete liquor license course in order to sell beer. Availability starting in April.

Hawkers – Must be able to carry 50+ lbs. up and down stairs. Looking for workers 18 years of age and older, but exceptions may be made. Must complete liquor license course to sell beer. Availability starting in April.

Picnic Staff – Must be able to lift 50+ lbs. with help of others on staff. Looking for workers 18 years of age and older, but exceptions may be made. Availability starting in April.

Picnic Lead – Individual must be able to successfully run picnics throughout the stadium. Food & beverage experience required along with understanding of buffets. Must be available majority of games throughout the season. Availability starting in April.

Concession Stand Server – Responsible for the distribution of food and beverage out of concession or kiosks. Must be able to work day games, must be 18 or older.

Concession Stand Register Operator – Primary responsibilities include taking food and beverage orders, cash handling, and customer interaction. Must be able to work day games, doesn’t necessarily need to be over 18, and should be comfortable on computers.

Concession Stand Runner – Individuals are required to keep food and beverage product replenished during baseball games. Required to lift half barrels (161lbs) on occasion. The job also includes frequent walking and standing for extended periods of time.

All concession positions are primarily nights/weekends but have 1st shift hours available occasionally.

In addition, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers banquet facility is looking for year-round, part-time employees in the following areas:

Bartenders – Day availability (at least one with lead bartender potential)- immediate start

Runners – Frequent walking and standing for extended periods of time, able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds – immediate start

Dishwashers – Mostly summer hours

Servers – Provide excellent food and beverage service for banquet events, assist with set-up of tables, linens, chairs, etc. for full service of banquet events and maintain back of house, front of house, and side work duties for productivity of banquet events – summer hours

Chiefs Scholarship Applications Open

PEORIA, IL – The Peoria Chiefs, in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Central Illinois, have announced that applications are now open for two available scholarships in the 2020 Peoria Chiefs Scholarship Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois. This year the college scholarships awarded will both be for $2000 and eligible students can apply through the scholarships tab at www.communityfoundationci.org with a deadline of March 4.

     Again this year, two scholarships will be awarded for the 2020 Fall Academic Year with students in District 150 and the Tri-County area eligible to be selected. The District 150 scholarship will focus on assisting students with financial need to excel in their higher education while allowing them to pursue any academic field they are passionate about. The Tri-County area scholarship will focus on assisting students who are pursuing degrees in athletic areas such as Sports Management, Marketing, Communications, and more. The Peoria Chiefs Scholarship Fund was established in 2017 and seven scholarships have been awarded over the first three years

The Chiefs have raised money for the Scholarship Fund over the last three seasons through mystery ball auctions and sales plus tennis ball tosses and jersey auctions. Fans who want to make a donation to the Peoria Chiefs Scholarship Fund can make donations directly to the fund by sending a check to Community Foundation of Central Illinois, with a memo to the Peoria Chiefs Scholarship Fund. Cougars Release Economic Impact Statement

GENEVA, Ill. – The Kane County Cougars and their fans have provided a major impact to the Kane County economy since the organization’s inaugural season in 1991. In 2019 alone, the Cougars generated over $11 million for the city, according to a recent economic impact study conducted by the organization.

Some of the highlights from the 2019 season include over $4.9 million invested into the community by ballpark visitors, 499 seasonal and full-time jobs as well as Foundation giving that totaled $1,054,980. Money spent at the ballpark includes tickets, concessions, souvenirs and parking.

“Over the last 29 years, the community has seen first hand that the Cougars have become far more than just a baseball team,” said owner Dr. Bob Froehlich. “As an organization, we have established a reputation beyond the baseball field and our motto of affordable family fun. We’re committed to making a difference in our community year-round.”

There are 15 different positions across eight departments that the South Bend Cubs are looking to fill. Some of the available positions include gameday ambassador, ticket seller, hospitality host, parking attendant, custodial services, fun zone employee, concessions team member, and more.

“The reason we have become a summer destination for people across the region is because our gameday staff creates a fun and exciting place to visit,” South Bend Cubs Vice President and General Manager Nick Brown said. “It’s the gold-standard guest service that keep our fans coming back year after year. We’re looking for people who are passionate, energetic, and customer service focused to join our team.”

The South Bend Cubs will open the 2020 season by hosting the Lake County Captains for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, April 9.

Bees now seeking 2020 interns

Burlington, IA – The Burlington Bees, class-A Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels are currently seeking interns for the 2020 season.

Available internships are in the areas of Ticketing/Group Sales and Merchandise, Marketing/Stadium Operations, Groundskeeping and Food/Beverage.

Bees interns will actively be a part of the many facets of team operations. Primary responsibilities across all openings include coordinating promotions, providing first-rate customer service, maintaining a clean facility that is fan-friendly, marketing the team in Burlington and in surrounding communities, and looking for ways to improve our operations daily.

The Bees are seeking talented, self-motivated individuals who want to learn what goes on behind the scenes of professional baseball. The Burlington organization values open-minded, conscientious team players possessing a positive attitude and a willingness to do what it takes to get the job done. Candidates must possess excellent writing, computer skills and a willingness to work long hours and weekends.

Cougars Foundation Recognized by Kane County Forest Preserve

GENEVA, Ill. – The Kane County Cougars Baseball Foundation was formally recognized by the Kane County Forest Preserve District at a public meeting on Tuesday, January 14.

Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich was presented with an official certificate of recognition and congratulations on receiving Ballpark Digest’s 2019 Commitment to Charity Award. This was the second consecutive year in which the Cougars Baseball Foundation donated over $1 million to charitable causes.

Forest Preserve President Mike Kenyon and Forest Preserve Executive Director Monica Meyers were also on hand to present the award.

“This is an exciting time for the Cougars organization,” said Dr. Bob Froehlich. “Not only do the awards and accolades keep coming for the Foundation, but we’re also preparing to celebrate our 30th-anniversary season in 2020.”

Several capital improvements will be made at Northwestern Medicine Field to enhance the fan experience. In addition, a special logo reveal and 30th-anniversary team will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 30th anniversary season kicks off on Thursday, April 9 at 6:30 PM against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Follow the Cougars on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates on all the 30th-anniversary festivities including tickets and promotions.

Kane County Cougars Baseball Foundation, Inc. Releases 2019 Annual Report

GENEVA, Ill. – The Kane County Cougars Baseball Foundation, Inc. proudly presents the 5th Annual Report to the Community detailing the organization’s charitable outreach in 2019. Each year, the report lists the extensive accomplishments of the Foundation as well as the notable programs coordinated by the Cougars.

It was another record-setting year for the Cougars Foundation as giving exceeded the $1 million mark, making 2019 the second consecutive year charitable giving was above the $1 million milestone. In addition, the Cougars moved into the top five among all Minor League Baseball (MiLB) teams in charitable giving following the release of the MiLB Charity Report for 2018. The Cougars are currently ranked fifth out of all 160 teams, marking the second consecutive year the team was ranked in the top ten for charitable giving.

The Foundation achieved additional milestones as the five-year record giving streak has soared over 1,500% since 2014. Individual programs supported by the Foundation have reached a total of 24, while cash contributions were provided to 32 community organizations, the largest number of programs and organizations that have benefited from the Foundation in its history. Program highlights include the Cougars Reading Club which now reaches over 450 schools and 138,000 students with the Summer Reading Program now including 89 libraries and over 5,400 student participants. The Foundation also operates two scholarship programs, issuing grade school level scholarships to six local students and five college-level scholarships. Military Outreach continued to see growth, reaching over 1,100 current and former military service members while the Senior Citizens Outreach touched over 2,500 local seniors age 65 and over.

In addition to the expansion of current programs, new programs were added such as Mental Health and Deaf Awareness Night. The Foundation teamed up with local charities that focus on improving the quality of lives for those who deal with mental illness and hearing impairments. For each strikeout recorded by a Cougars pitcher during select nights, the Foundation made a donation with a portion of the total proceeds benefiting the selected charities.

The highlight of the year for the Foundation came at Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego, Calif. Ballpark Digest selected the Cougars Foundation out of all 160 MiLB teams to receive the prestigious Ballpark Digest Commitment to Charity Award for the 2019 season. Following the announcement that the Cougars had been selected, the Foundation received a congratulatory message from NASDAQ on the famous MarketSite Tower that illuminates Times Square. This marked the first time a MiLB Foundation was featured on the MarketSite Tower.

Across all 24 programs, the Kane County Cougars Baseball Foundation’s charitable giving reached a total of $1,054,980.

“None of these accomplishments would be possible without the commitment of our Foundation’s sponsors, donors and partners,” said Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich. “Their willingness to step up for our community is seen each and every year that we’re able to expand our outreach. It’s amazing to watch the impact of the Foundation stretch far beyond the baseball field.”

Registration Open for National Anthem Tryouts

DAYTON, OHIO – A traditional sign that baseball season is just around the corner in the Miami Valley is National Anthem Tryouts, presented by the Dayton Daily News. Tryouts for national anthem performers for the 2020 season will take place on Saturday, February 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Mall at Fairfield Commons.

Finalists will perform the national anthem at Dragons games throughout the season, with the grand prize winner performing on Opening Day 2020 before the Dragons host the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m.

Pre-registration is now underway at www.daytondragons.com/nationalanthem. The first 200 entrants who pre-register for this event will receive a scheduled tryout time. In the event that all of the allotted spots are filled, you could still have a chance to perform at the tryouts on a stand-by basis.

To register as a stand-by performer, you must come to the Saturday, February 22 tryouts at the Mall at Fairfield Commons. You will receive a stand-by number that will be called when a spot becomes available. Standby performers are not guaranteed a chance to tryout so, interested performers are strongly encouraged to sign up at www.daytondragons.com/nationalanthem.

A panel of local citizens including media personalities, city officials, and community leaders will be judging the event. The panel will make its selections based on voice quality, creative style, stage presence, and appearance.

Part-time positions available for 2020 season

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are in search of energetic and responsible people for part-time employment for the 2020 season. Applications may be picked up during regular business hours (Monday to Friday: 9am to 5pm) at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium or on the team’s website.

There are openings in all departments, but the team is in special need of ushers, food & beverage workers, parking attendants, and ticket office and Snake Pit Team Store personnel. The Timber Rattlers are particularly interested in people who can begin in April. Applicants must turn 16 years of age on or before April 8, 2020.
