ValleyCats, First Niagara partner on Community Spotlight

38 nonprofits will be highlighted at “The Joe” in 2013

TROY, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats have partnered with First Niagara on a season-long community initiative known as the “Community Spotlight.” During each of the ValleyCats 38 home games, a different nonprofit organization will be highlighted with in-stadium exposure throughout the night.

“First Niagara is thrilled to sponsor the Tri-City ValleyCats Community Spotlight initiative,” said First Niagara Eastern New York Market Leader Nina Tyzik. “This program provides the community with an opportunity to learn about all the great things the Capital Region’s nonprofit organizations are doing, and gives these organizations tremendous exposure.”

As part of the ‘Community Spotlight,” during each ValleyCats home game a certain non-profit organization will be recognized on the video board, receive a premier tabling opportunity on the concourse and 10 tickets for their staff and supporters to enjoy the game.

“First Niagara’s commitment to the community makes them the perfect partner for the Community Spotlight Program,” said ValleyCats Vice President/General Manager Rick Murphy. “Through this partnership, the 38 nonprofits will be able to receive great exposure in front of a captive audience throughout the 2013 season.”

The 38 nonprofit organizations include Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, all of which are being recognized during the ValleyCats opening homestand, June 17-19. Once confirmed, a full list of Community Spotlight dates will be posted online at tcvalleycats.com.

NY-Penn League Charitable Foundation Announces 2013 Scholarship Competition

The Class-A Short-Season New York-Penn League and its member clubs are proud to announce that the league’s philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award over $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets.

Now in its fifth year, the 2013 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligble. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.

The scholarship contest will consist of two stages – a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the divisional/final round. The 14 finalists will be separated by the division of the team they represent. The winning application from each of the NYPL’s three divisions (McNamara, Pinckney and Stedler) will receive the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists will receive a $250 book award.

“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are committed to giving back to our local communities and our annual scholarship competition has become one of the anchors of our community outreach program over the past five years,” said Ben J. High school seniors interested in entering the 2013 Scholarship Contest can obtain the official application from their local NYPL club, or by visiting the league’s official website, New York-Penn League.com.

The deadline to submit applications to the nearest NYPL team is June 28, 2013. Each club’s winner, including the three $2,500 scholarship recipients, will be selected in late July and honored at a game in August.

The New York-Penn League and its 14 member clubs created the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in 2003. New York’s 529 College Savings Plan and the Muckdogs Partnering for Essay Contest

The Batavia Muckdogs and New York’s 529 College Savings Program Direct Plan have announced that they are once again partnering together with an essay contest for local students and children. The goal of the essay contest is to have kids submit an original essay on the topic of “what would you like to be when you grow up”.  The Batavia Muckdogs front office staff will read over all entries, selecting the three (3) most compelling submissions. The three winners and their parents/guardians will then receive complementary tickets to the Tuesday, September 3, 2013 Muckdogs’ home game at 7:05pm. In addition to receiving a free ticket, the winners will receive a back-to-school backpack with supplies, courtesy of New York’s 529 College Savings Program Direct Plan. The three selected winners will also have the opportunity to throw out the honorary first pitches for the game.

Eligibility:   The contest is open to all children who attend a school in the local communities surrounding Batavia. This includes schools in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans, Erie, and Niagara counties.

Contest Period:   Students may enter submissions anytime from this point forward until August 16, 2013. At that point the Batavia Muckdogs front office staff will begin reading submissions and selecting the three (3) winners.

How to Enter:   To enter, participants must submit their essay (approximately 100 words) either by mailing it to Dwyer Stadium or dropping it off at the stadium in person. The mailing address is: Dwyer Stadium, 299 Bank Street, Batavia, NY. Along with the essay submission, we ask that participants include their: full name; school; date of birth; and telephone number.

Events announced for Armed Forces Weekend

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are pleased to announce activities for the Chiefs’ Armed Forces Weekend. Events at NBT Bank Stadium will take place on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11.

On Friday, May 10, the Chiefs will host a showcase concert from Nashville recording artist Parker Bradway in the Hank Sauer Room from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The concert, sponsored by B104.7, will benefit the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team. Special event tickets can be purchased for $20 each, good for admission to both the concert and the Chiefs’ 7:00 pm game that evening vs. the Norfolk Tides.

On Saturday, May 11, the Chiefs will host the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) to kick off an all-day Armed Forces celebration. At 10:30 am, the WWAST will take the field against a local celebrity team sponsored by Fuccillo Nissan. Admission to the softball game is free.

During the day on Saturday, military vehicles and equipment will be on display in the NBT Bank Stadium parking lot beginning at 12:00 noon. A pre-game, on-field ceremony will take place to honor military personnel before the the Chiefs’ 2:00 pm game against the Tides.  Chiefs players and coaches will also wear specially designed “Stars & Stripes” jerseys and hats for the game.

Tickets for both games of Armed Forces Weekend, along with all other Chiefs home games, can be purchased online at  syracusechiefs.com  where fans can use the team’s new ticketing system to select their seats online and print their tickets from home.  Tickets can also be purchased by calling  315-474-7833 or in person at the Chiefs ticket office.

Food Bank to benefit from Chiefs’ partnership with Dunkin’ Donuts

SYRACUSE, New York – Dunkin’ Donuts announced today it will donate one pound of coffee to Food Bank of Central New York for every run scored by the Syracuse Chiefs during the team’s 72 home games at NBT Bank Stadium this season. The community relations initiative is one element of a season-long partnership with the Chiefs that will also feature group outings, sponsored by Dunkin’Donuts, for Central New York charitable organizations in 2013.

Another highlight of the partnership is the return of the Dunkin’ Donuts Community Dugout, which provides 1,800 tickets to groups and non-profit agencies throughout Central New York during the 2013 season. Muckdogs Announce “Hit the Books” Reading Program

The Batavia Muckdogs today announced a new reading program, designed to promote reading amongst the youth of the local communities. Along with the help of Smoke Free NOW, 2013 will mark the first year of the “HIT THE BOOKS with the Batavia Muckdogs” reading program.

As part of this program, the Muckdogs have provided various schools and libraries across local counties with customized bookmarks.  On the back of these bookmarks, children can have a parent, guardian, teacher, or librarian initial each time they complete a book. When a child completes 10 books, they can redeem the bookmark at the Dwyer Stadium box office for a FREE TICKET to any Sunday-Thursday (excluding July 3rd) Batavia Muckdogs’ game!  If a child reads 20 books, they will be entered into a drawing to win autographed memorabilia, opportunities to throw out a first pitch at a Muckdogs game and other great prizes.

Red Wings Host Relay for Life Event on June 29

The Rochester Red Wings are set to host the first-ever American Cancer Society Relay for Life event in the City of Rochester on June 29, 2013 at Frontier Field.

The overnight, community walk around the warning track at Frontier Field will begin with a Survivor Lap at 7:00 p.m. on June 29 and conclude the following morning, June 30, with a Fight Back Ceremony at 7:00 a.m.

In between, participants will take turns walking, running or otherwise circling the track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. In addition, the celebration will include music, dancing, games, food and a candlelight vigil at nightfall to honor cancer survivors and caregivers and to remember those lost to cancer.

“The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a truly amazing event and we could not be more proud as an organization to host a Relay event at Frontier Field this season,” said Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason. “Everyone in some way, shape or form as been affected by cancer and this event is a great way to honor the victims and survivors as well as fight back against this terrible disease.”

Relay participants can sign up individually or as a member of a team at www.relayforlife.org/redwingsny and are encouraged to raise money prior to the event. Participants who raise over $100 will receive an official Rochester Red Wings Relay for Life T-shirt.

Participants interested in learning more about the Red Wings Relay for Life event are invited to attend the kickoff party at Frontier Field from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 – the same day single-game tickets go on sale for the upcoming 2013 baseball season.

The ACS’s Relay for Life event ignites team spirit among participants and works to raise funds used to save lives and create more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

Bisons’ coach’s clinic at City Honors

Buffalo-Bisons-2013-logoOn Friday March 1, the Buffalo Bisons sponsored a Buffalo Public High School Baseball Coaches Clinic at City Honors High School. The sponsorship of the clinic is part of the ongoing support of the Bisons and the Rich Family Foundation given to the Buffalo Public High School baseball program.

The clinic was held in City Honors’ new gymnasium with the coaching staff and team members for the Medaille College Mavericks baseball team as the instructors. The clinic covered coaching instruction on hitting and bunting drills and mechanics, fielding drills for both infielders and outfielders, base running drills, pitching drills and mechanics, throwing exercises and strength and conditioning exercises. The focus was on conducting good indoor baseball practices but also covered some outdoor and pregame drills and preparation.

‘4 in 24’ youth field renovations set for April 12

TROY, NY- As the Tri-City ValleyCats prepare to usher in a new season of affordable family fun and professional baseball to the Capital Region, they will be teaming up once again with BlueShield of Northeastern New York on the Community Grounds Crew and the 3rd Annual ‘4 in 24’ Youth Field Renovation Program. In a 24 hour time period, four chosen youth fields will have new sod placed on their infield while also seeing their pitcher’s mound and homeplate areas rebuilt. The simultaneous renovations are scheduled to take place on Friday, April 12.

The ‘4 in 24′ is the kick-off event for the Community Grounds Crew, an expanded initiative with the assistance from BlueShield of Northeastern New York. This program will undertake additional projects and renovations on numerous other youth fields throughout the spring and summer.

“The ValleyCats are proud to be partnering once again with BlueShield of Northeastern New York to continue the work of our Community Grounds Crew,” said ValleyCats Vice President/General Manager Rick Murphy. “With their tremendous support, we are able to provide the youth in our community safe and well-maintained fields on which to play, and as ambassadors for the game of baseball, that is immensely important to us.”

Following the formation of the Community Grounds Crew last spring, over a dozen youth ball fields have been fully renovated with countless other field projects completed throughout the Capital Region.

“BlueShield is excited to support the important field renovations throughout our community again this year,” Brian O’Grady, vice president, BlueShield of Northeastern New York, said. “We have seen the impact of tremendously improving the quality of these spaces for children to enjoy one of our country’s favorite past times. Our company takes pride in encouraging children to get outside and play with their friends because as we all know- Healthy Changes Everything.”

The ValleyCats’ field renovations have been an annual tradition since 2003 when the first field was officially renovated by the ‘Cats in South Troy, just one mile away from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Each year since, they have expanded upon its success. In 2011 the ‘Cats created the ambitious ‘4 in 24’ project to renovate four youth playing fields in the course of just a 24 hour time period, something totally unique to any field renovation initiative in the country.

Each project is also supported by the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation. Contributions come from past events such as the Capital Region Craft Brewers Festival, hosted by the ValleyCats and Brown’s Brewing Company, and the Corporate Cup Tournaments which have included teams from local and regional businesses.

Leagues interested in having their field considered for the ‘4 in 24’ or other Community Grounds Crew renovations must complete an application that can be found on the ValleyCats website, www.tcvalleycats.com. In order to be eligible for the ‘4 in 24’ renovation, applications must be returned by Friday, February 22. Those submitted beyond that date or not selected for the ‘4 in 24’ will remain in consideration for the Community Grounds Crew program, which will accept and evaluate applications on an on-going basis.

Boy/Girl Scout Night

Tickets to our scout nights are open to any level of scouting, both boys and girls. Tickets start at just $5 for a General Admission tickets and $7 for a Reserved Grandstand ticket (adults and children included). Ticket packages are also available for the night starting at $12. All troops that sell more than 25 tickets will have the opportunity to take a group photo on the field after the game.

Syracuse Chiefs Charitable Foundation, Inc. makes $5,000 donation to Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund

Syracuse-ChiefsThe Syracuse Chiefs Charitable Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 corporation, today presented a check in the amount of $5,000 to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of Central New York.

The donation is the result of a year-long partnership between the two organizations that was highlighted by Breast Cancer Awareness Night on July 20 at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Syracuse Chiefs hosted a “Pink Cocktail Party” fundraiser in the Hank Sauer Room during that evening’s game against the Norfolk Tides. Among the highlights of the cocktail party was a visit from actor Billy Baldwin, who joined his mother Carol M. Baldwin, in thanking Chiefs fans in attendance for their support.

Carol-M-Baldwin-Breast-CancerIn addition, volunteers from the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund also sold breast cancer awareness merchandise, including bracelets, t-shirts, flip-flops, lanyards, and rings, on the main concourse during every Chiefs home game this season.

“We applaud the outstanding efforts of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund,” said Chiefs General Manager John Simone. “It is an honor to work with one of the premiere non-profit organizations in this area to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.”

“I would like to thank the Syracuse Chiefs and the Syracuse Chiefs Charitable Foundation for their commitment to finding a cure for breast cancer,” said Elizabeth Baldwin, Executive Director of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. “This has been a very successful partnership for the last several years and we look forward to working together for many years to come.”

ValleyCats are accepting donations throughout this week to be distributed to those affected by Hurricane Sandy

Donations can be made during regular business hours at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium through Friday

TROY, NY – The Tri-City ValleyCats will be collecting donations at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium through Friday, November 9 for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. The items will be distributed in Coney Island, Brooklyn on Saturday.Coney Island was one of the harder hit areas affected by Hurricane Sandy, and is home to the ValleyCats downstate New York-Penn League neighbor, the Brooklyn Cyclones. Members of the front office staff will be heading down to assist with the cleanup efforts and to distribute items desperately needed by the residents of that area.

The ValleyCats will accept the following items:

  • Coats, sweaters, hats, scarves, gloves and blankets
  • Trash bags
  • Work gloves
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Tissues
  • Toilet paper
  • Napkins & paper towels

Syracuse Chiefs help raise $1,600 to assist with pet overpopulation problem

Strikeouts by team’s bullpen lead to donation for SANS

Syracuse-ChiefsFor the fifth consecutive year Spay And Neuter Syracuse (SANS) has received a hefty check from Beaver Lake Animal Hospital, with help from the Syracuse Chiefs relief pitchers.

Earlier today at Alliance Bank Stadium, Dr. Sandra Fitzpatrick of Beaver Lake Animal Hospital presented a $1,600 check to Spay And Neuter Syracuse (SANS).

Spay-and-Neuter-Syracuse-logoPrior to the 2008 season Dr. Fitzpatrick approached the Syracuse Chiefs with an idea to raise money to help stop the pet overpopulation problem in the area and to raise awareness that it does exist.

Dr. Fitzpatrick pledged to donate $10.00 for every strike out of the visiting team recorded by a Syracuse Chiefs relief pitcher at Alliance Bank Stadium that season and has continued the program every year since. The Chiefs bullpen tallied 160 home strikeouts during the 2012 campaign.

“It is my pleasure to have teamed with the Syracuse Chiefs relief pitchers again this season to help strike out the overpopulation of pets,” said Dr. Fitzpatrick. “I’m very appreciative of the opportunity that the Syracuse Chiefs have provided to raise awareness for SANS and this very important topic.”

“The Syracuse Chiefs commend both Dr. Fitzpatrick and SANS for their efforts to make a positive impact on our community,” said Chiefs General Manager John Simone. “We are very pleased that this program has continued for five seasons and we look forward to being a part of it for many years to come.”

Monies raised will go directly to Spay and Neuter Syracuse (SANS), a low cost spay and neuter clinic located in Syracuse and the only one of its kind in Onondaga County. The clinic has spayed and neutered over 10,000 animals since its inception November 2005.

SANS is a volunteer based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the pet overpopulation problem by spaying and neutering unowned cats and dogs and animals belonging to persons of low income.
