Quilting to honor local Veterans

Cedar Rapids, IA – Quilts are being made on Saturday, March 8th to honor Eastern Iowa Veterans and will be presented to local Veterans during a Cedar Rapids Kernels game this summer.

The quilting event will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, March 8th from 9 am until 4:30 pm. All interested quilters are welcome to come to the stadium to create a quilt that will be given away to veterans on July 5th. Kits and fabric are available for purchase at Connie’s Quilt Shop, or use up some of your red/white/and blue “stash”.

To register for the quilting event on March 8th, call Connie’s Quilt Shop at (319) 373-9455 by Wednesday, March 5th. Those sewing during the quilting event will receive a free ticket to attend the Kernels game on July 5th and those donating a completed quilt for a Veteran by June 2, 2014, will receive a 20% off coupon from Connie’s Quilt Shop (one coupon per person).

In addition to making the quilts, Connie’s Quilt Shop and machine quilter Jennifer McRae, are providing a quilt to be raffled off with the drawing to be held during the game on July 5th. All proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Linn County Veterans Affairs.

The 2014 Kernels arrive in Cedar Rapids on Monday, March 31st and the first chance to meet the new team is on Tuesday, April 1st as part of “Meet the Kernels Night’ from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. The Kernels open the 2014 MWL season on Thursday, April 3rd when they host the Clinton LumberKings at 6:35 pm.

Potomac Nationals Pay it Forward with Field Tarp Contribution to Division III UMW Baseball

Woodbridge, VA-The Potomac Nationals have donated their Pfitzner Stadium field tarp to the University of Mary Washington Baseball program (Fredericksburg, Virginia) in an ongoing effort to bolster the resources of amateur and collegiate baseball in the Northern Virginia region.

The University of Mary Washington Eagles compete in the Division III Capital Athletic Conference at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium and will play 29 regular-season home games in 2014.

Dickinson Stadium holds a seating capacity of over 1,000 fans and is one of the finest facilities in all of NCAA Baseball.

“Any time the Potomac Nationals can positively impact another baseball program in our community, our club is going to jump at that opportunity. We are glad to donate our field tarp to the University of Mary Washington Baseball program, and we trust it will complement their terrific facility in a way that will minimize the amount of games postponed or lost due to the elements,” said Potomac Nationals Vice President/General Manager, Josh Olerud.

University of Mary Washington Baseball Head Coach, Wayne Riser reached out to the Nationals in advance of the Eagles’ home opener on February 15th to inquire about the availability of the Potomac Nationals’ field tarp.

“Everyone involved with our program is immensely appreciative of the generosity of the Potomac Nationals and especially the efforts of Mr. Olerud,” said UMW Head Coach, Wayne Riser.

“This tarp will benefit UMW Baseball student-athletes for years to come and is a great boost to our program.”

Riser coordinated with Olerud to arrange for members of the University of Mary Washington Baseball team to make the drive from Fredericksburg to Woodbridge to load the tarp on a flat-bed vehicle and haul it back to the Home of the Eagles.

“We are grateful to the Potomac Nationals for their recent donation of a tarp for our baseball facility,” said UMW Director of Athletics Ken Tyler.

“We appreciate the club’s generosity and engagement with UMW Athletics, and we hope our student-athletes and fans will support the Potomac Nationals this season.”

The University of Mary Washington Baseball team is off to a red-hot (4-1) start to the 2014 campaign and is riding a four-game winning streak as of February 28th.

NEFCU/Lake Monsters “CHAMP Sightings”

Free CHAMP appearances offered to non-profit organizations

BURLINGTON, VT — New England Federal Credit Union and the Vermont Lake Monsters will be teaming up this year to actively support the community by offering free CHAMP appearances (called “CHAMP Sightings”) to non-profit organizations and other programs that share their commitment to enhancing the well being of the local communities.

“Over the past 20 years, CHAMP has become an integral part of the community, but there are still events each year that we have wanted to participate in but were unable to.” said Nate Cloutier, Lake Monsters’ General Manager. “We are very fortunate to have teamed up with such a wonderful community partner such as NEFCU, who shares our vision for giving back to the community and having fun while doing so.”

CHAMP, the mascot for the Lake Monsters since the team’s first season in the New York-Penn League back in 1994, has always been available for appearances in the community for a fee. But this new partnership between NEFCU and the Lake Monsters will give certain organizations and programs the opportunity to have CHAMP make an appearance at their event for no charge.

Organizations and programs interested in participating in the “CHAMP Sightings” program, and having CHAMP attend their event for free must submit a formal application that can be downloaded here from CHAMP Sightings page in Community section of website. Please note that depending on the event location, travel costs may apply. Interested parties should submit a formal application as soon as possible, as appearances are limited.

Return of Community Events

The Rome Braves announced today the return of two community wide special events at State Mutual Stadium, home of the Rome Braves. On Friday March 21st and Saturday March 22nd, the Rome Braves High School Invitational will be held for the third consecutive year. This year joining the Floyd County High Schools in competition will be Calhoun High School, Darlington School, Rome High School, and the defending GHSA-AAA State Champions, Cartersville High School. On Friday Armuchee High School will take on Calhoun High School at 6pm. The schedule for Saturday will feature Coosa High School vs. Darlington School at 11am, Model High School vs. Rome High School at 2:45pm, and Pepperell High School vs. Cartersville High School at 6:30pm. Gates will open 1 hour prior to the first schedule game each day. “We’re excited to announce the addition of these four baseball programs into our Invitational,” said Rome Braves General Manager, Michael Dunn. “It’s always a good day when we’re able to showcase and support local high school baseball.”

This two day Invitational directly benefits these local baseball programs based on their team’s ticket sales. Fans can purchase tickets directly from their favorite participating teams through March 14th and the team that sells the most tickets receives an additional donation from the Atlanta Braves Foundation for their baseball program. Tickets are $5 per person and seating is general admission for all games. After the 14th, tickets can be purchased through the box office at State Mutual Stadium.

Following the Invitational, in April, the Rome Braves will host the 2nd Annual No Excuses 5k and 10k in memory of Scott Hines. This yearly race benefits the Braves Miracle Field of Rome. Competition will take place on Saturday April 19th at 8am and is a part of the R.A.C.E. Rome series. In the inaugural race, almost 300 runners crossed the finish line at home plate to support baseball for disabled kids and adults in Northwest Georgia. Through programming at the Braves Miracle Field of Rome, over 100 athletes have suited up to play baseball during the first two seasons. A weekly school league is also available to special education classes in the area. No athlete is turned away due to the financial constraints. Community Organization of the Game Program Returns

Moosic, Pa. – One of the signature pieces of community outreach for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) a season ago is back and better than ever. The Community Organization of the Game program, presented by DePietro Pharmacy, is looking for NEPA community groups that wish to spread their word to the masses during the 2014 season.

“DePietro’s Pharmacy is locally owned and invested in the health of our community,” said owner Thomas DiPietro. “We are proud to stay involved in our community. Last year, we donated over $8,000 to local fundraisers and organizations. This year we are proud to be able to sponsor the Community Organization of the Game. Our commitment to our community clearly aligns with the RailRiders’ vision. There are many people who need assistance in our community. Community organizations are often underfunded, so they generally have a small budget for promotions and advertising. The RailRiders’ commitment gives organizations a unique opportunity to educate the public on their services. It also benefits the community, as many people don’t know what kind of help is out there.”

A total of 72 non-profit groups, one for each home game, will receive a tip of the cap and more throughout the 2014 campaign. The groups chosen will own a prime spot on the front porch of NEPA. In addition to receiving four free field reserve seats, the group will also have a concourse table allowing them to pass out information on their organization and cause. Beyond that personal face-to-face time, each group will be have a live pre-game interview on the field that will be shown to all in attendance on PNC Field’s state-of-the-art video board. The message will be further disseminated with a live in-game interview on the RailRiders’ radio broadcast.

The Community Organization of the Game receives other perks like a ceremonial first pitch, their logo getting some time to shine on the video board and most of all, the chance to interact with the very folks they touch with their efforts.

“We are honored to highlight the great organizations that benefit our community,” said team president/GM Rob Crain. “These people and their organizations do so much. If we can help get their message out in any way, we are humbly glad to do so.”

Intimidators now accepting applications for ACN Charity Spotlight organizations

(Feb. 20, 2014) – The Kannapolis Intimidators have teamed up with ACN Inc. to host four Charity Spotlight Nights during the 2014 season in order to give local non-profit organizations a larger platform to raise money and awareness for their cause. Groups interested in applying are encouraged to do so now as consideration will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Lakewood, NJ – The Lakewood BlueClaws, a minor league baseball team that plays at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, has recently become the nation’s first sports team to join SolarCure’s “Adopt-a-Solar Panel” Program.

As part of the program, they sponsor a solar panel that will be installed as part of a complete solar array on the roof of a local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post thus truly making a lasting difference in the lives of Veterans. This solar panel installation will provide extra income through SRECs and generate free and clean energy for at least 25 years. The reduced or eliminated electricity bills will allow the VFW to allocate more funds towards their organization’s mission and re-invested back to Veterans.

This innovative program produces multiple beneficiaries: the environment, our economy, and military veterans.

The “Adopt-a-Solar-Panel” Program
Program participants demonstrate their patriotism and sustainability regarding economic and environmental issues by sponsoring part of a solar panel installation destined for a veteran based nonprofit organization.

The “Adopt-a-Solar-Panel” program reduces U.S. carbon emissions through the use of renewable solar energy by providing Veteran nonprofits with 100% free Solar Panel installations sponsored by private and public companies.

In addition to the bonus that non-profits can generate additional income through SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Credits), each solar installation also helps create new jobs for civilians and veterans in our country.

When asked what they found most interesting about the Adopt-a-Solar Panel program, Brandon Marano, BlueClaws General Manager said “We’re able to help the environment and the veterans at the same time with this great program. It was a unique situation for us and one that we are excited to be a part of.”

BlueClaws & The Military
The BlueClaws have made a choice to support America’s veteran organizations as a way of giving back to those that have served. In addition to their solar panel sponsorship, which is consistent with their dedicated support of military veterans, the BlueClaws also host a “Military Partners Program” and “We Salute You Wednesdays” through which the military is honored at Wednesday home games and companies donate tickets to local active and retired military members.

The BlueClaws have also partnered with OceanFirst Foundation on Home Runs For Heroes, and every time the BlueClaws hit a home run at FirstEnergy Park, a donation is made to a local military-based non-profit. Over $100,000 has been raised since 2009.

Other military initiatives include military discounts, appreciation nights that collect supplies and cell phones for our active troops, special nights dedicated to Veteran non-profits such as the Disabled American Veterans, VFW, and Joint-Base nights.

Gwinnett Braves to Host High School Showcase II

Coolray Field set to host 22 of the premiere high school baseball teams in the area from Feb. 22 to March 15

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The Gwinnett Braves will host the second annual High School Baseball Showcase at Coolray Field beginning on February 22. For four consecutive weekends from February 22 through March15, the home of the G-Braves will host 22 of the top high school baseball programs in the Atlanta metro area.

Last season, the Gwinnett Braves hosted a two-day event, and with the hard work of the front office staff and commitment of the high school baseball teams in the area, the G-Braves have expanded the showcase into a five-day, four-weekend event. The showcase will be jam-packed with talented squads, as 15 of the 22 participating teams earned postseason berths and accumulated winning marks in 2013.

“We are happy to continue this tradition of high school baseball at Coolray Field,” said Gwinnett Braves General Manager North Johnson. “The expansion of the game schedule shows the commitment of our staff in making these games available to all the schools in the Atlanta metro area. One of our goals at Coolray Field is to make these games accessible to all the schools in the area and we are very happy that schools from all across the area are taking part in this showcase.”

The event will kick off with North Gwinnett High School and Providence Christian High School, as they play at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. North Gwinnett features left-handed pitcher Tucker Baca, who is committed to Arizona State University and is ranked the No. 92 high school prospect according to Baseball America. Providence Christian is coming off a 15-win season and a playoff berth. The nightcap will feature Archer High School and Lanier High School at 4 p.m. Both schools are relatively new to the baseball fold, as their programs have been around for less than five years. Each school is quickly building into an elite power, including Lanier, who is coming off a school-best 18-win season in 2013.

On Saturday, March 1, Coolray Field will be loaded with baseball action, hosting four games from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Buford High School, who is coming off of a 21-12 season, will match up against Hebron High School at 11:30 a.m. Holy Innocents High School and Lambert High School, two teams that made it into the second round of the Georgia State playoffs in their respective regions last year, will face off at 1:30 p.m. South Forsyth High School and Dunwoody High School will meet at 4 p.m., and the day will conclude with a battle between Kennesaw Mountain High School and Northview High School at 6:30 p.m.

The showcase will continue the following weekend with three more games. On Friday, March 7 at 4 p.m., Peachtree Ridge High School will play North Forsyth High School. Last season, Peachtree Ridge finished second in the region with an 11-3 record, but fell in the second round of the 7-AAAAAA playoffs. North Forsyth won 12 games in 2013 and finished sixth in their division.

On Saturday, March 8, Mountain View High School and South Gwinnett High School will play each other for the second straight season at Coolray Field. Last year, the Comets won a tightly contested battle 7-6 over the Bears. Right after that game at 6:30 p.m., Norcross High School and Grayson High School will take the field. Both squads come into 2014 following stellar seasons, as each finished atop their respective conferences and qualified for the playoffs a year ago.

The showcase will conclude on Saturday, March 15 with another twin-bill starting at 11 a.m. The first contest will feature East Cobb Academy and the Home Plate Citadels, while the second game pits Johns Creek High School against Loganville High School at 1:30 p.m. Johns Creek went 18-7 last season, reaching the AAAAAA playoffs before losing to Norcross, while Loganville went 26-8 before falling in the quarterfinals of the AAAAA playoffs.

“This is a great opportunity for our players to play on the best playing surface in all of Triple-A baseball and to play in such a beautiful venue against a perennial high school power like Loganville,” said Johns Creek Head Baseball Coach Billy Nicholson. “Our whole baseball community is looking forward to a great day of baseball!”

Sky Sox around the Community in February

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Spring Training is right around the corner and as baseball season approaches, you can find the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at several events throughout the community. At each event you will be able to pick up your 2014 pocket schedule and speak to a representative in person about the variety of events going on throughout the preseason and into the season. 2014 ticket packages also will be available to purchase.

Here’s a quick list of where you can find your hometown team:

Friday, Feb. 7 – Downtown Olympic Celebration – As the Winter Olympics in Sochi kick off, Sox the Fox will join some of the Sky Sox staff to celebrate with the rest of Colorado Springs at the Downtown Celebration. We will be located just north of Orchard Oven’s Bakery near the Bijou intersection.

Friday, Feb. 7 – American Heart Association Fashion Show at Chapel Hills Mall – The Sky Sox will also be at the Chapel Hills Mall on Friday supporting the AHA as they raise awareness for heart health during Heart Month.

Saturday, Feb. 8 – Bourbon Brothers Grand Opening with Goose Gossage – Along with baseball Hall of Famer Goose Gossage, you can find the Sky Sox at the Grand Opening of Bourbon Brothers located at 13021 Bass Pro Drive.

Friday, Feb. 14 – Sunday, Feb. 16 – Sports and RV show at Penrose Event Center – Sox the Fox will be out of his den once again as he visits the Sports and RV Show on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 15 – Colorado College Hockey Game – The Sky Sox are fans of all local sports teams, join us for a great night of hockey and have a chance to win prizes by spinning our prize wheel. The Tigers will take on Western Michigan at 7:07 p.m. at World Arena.

Nominate a local hero for public recognition at a Naturals game this season

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals and Centennial Bank are proud to announce the return of our Centennial Bank Community Heroes program, which will seek to honor individuals who have done something excellent for their hometown or organization.

Centennial Bank Community Heroes are individuals who have gone above and beyond in terms of community service and helping others. Those that are selected during the season will receive on-field recognition during a pre-game ceremony at a TBD Naturals’ home game, four (4) complimentary Super Premium tickets, and a “Community Heroes” award courtesy of Centennial Bank. Winners from previous seasons include students, teachers, military members, first responders, clergy members, and businesses that have served their community in a positive manner.

“The Naturals are proud for the third year to honor those that are making a difference in our community,” said Naturals General Manager Justin Cole. “We are excited to continue this partnership with Centennial Bank and look forward to welcoming this year’s recipients and their guests.”

Youth baseball volunteers whom have gone above and beyond are being sought to help get the program started this year. For the first night of the Centennial Bank Community Heroes – on Opening Night on Thursday, April 10th, a hero will be selected to take the field and receive pre-game recognition as the Naturals’ starting lineup is introduced to the crowd. For Opening Night nominations of someone that has impacted your life, please submit your form by no later than April 3rd. Centennial Bank Community Heroes will accept nominations throughout the season and be awarded at each home game. All those selected will receive four (4) super premium tickets.

If an honoree wants to attend the game accompanied by a large group, the Naturals will make group rates available for advance purchase for groups of 20 or more in addition to the four complimentary tickets.

Modern Woodmen Park to host 2014 Davenport Little League Registration Feb. 8

For the sixth consecutive year, the Quad Cities River Bandits will host Davenport Little League baseball and softball registration indoors at Modern Woodmen Park. On Saturday, Feb. 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Little Leaguers from throughout the Davenport area will visit the ballpark to register for their upcoming season.

By centralizing the registration at Modern Woodmen Park, this event incorporates all the Davenport Little Leagues, regardless of age or level, into one central location and has greatly assisted organizers in streamlining the registration process the last five years.

“We welcome these young athletes and their families to the Modern Woodmen Park experience, which is all about families creating memories that last a lifetime,” said River Bandits co-owner Dave Heller. “Kids and parents alike love incorporating Modern Woodmen Park and professional baseball into the Davenport Little Leagues, and we are thrilled to continue our support of the Little League programs and youth sports in the Quad Cities.”

All the local leagues – including the North, Northwest, East, Southeast, West Softball, Emeis, East Softball, Pony, Colt and Challenger Leagues – will hold registration on Feb. 8. Registration is required even if the child has previously played. At least one parent or legal guardian must be present with proof of residence and an original or state-certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, which will be returned at the registration. Also, the leagues require a completed registration form, medical release form, and the fee for registration.

For children ages 14 and under attending the Little League registration, the River Bandits will also offer an exclusive, one-day special on 2014 Kids Club memberships. Normally $30 per child 14 and under, a Kids Club membership will be $25 at Modern Woodmen Park on Saturday, Feb. 8, only. A Kids Club Membership includes a free bleacher ticket good for all River Bandits 2014 regular season home games, a membership card, a T-shirt, a 10 percent discount off purchases in the team store, an email newsletter with exclusive special offers and much more.

The River Bandits will also have select merchandise available for purchase, as well as information about ticket plans and group outings at the ballpark this season. Families and individuals may also purchase or renew their season ticket packages for the 2014 season.

“As a community-based venue, Modern Woodmen Park is ideal for kicking off the little league year,” said Genearal Manager Andrew Chesser. “As added fun, kids will register at a professional ballpark within the same week the pros are reporting for spring training!”

Indians Announce Youth Baseball

SPOKANE, WA – The Spokane Indians are excited to announce the formation of Spokane Indians Youth Baseball, a non-profit youth baseball organization that will encompass all of Spokane Pony Baseball, Spokane Babe Ruth and the baseball and softball divisions of Spokane Youth Sports Association (SYSA).

“When discussing youth baseball with Spokane Pony Baseball, Spokane Babe Ruth and SYSA, it became clear that this was the right time to combine our efforts and form Spokane Indians Youth Baseball,” said Otto Klein, Senior Vice President of the Spokane Indians. “By bringing together the leagues and brands, we will be able to enhance the baseball experience for families and volunteers of the Inland Northwest. It’s an exciting time for all of us.”

“With one united organization, we will be able to clearly communicate information and simplify player registration and coordination of fields,” said Dana Richardson, President of Pony Baseball. “Having the Spokane Indians associated with youth baseball will increase the exposure for our league, and in turn increase the number of youth on the baseball diamond.”

In 2013, over 3,000 kids participated in Pony, Babe Ruth and SYSA baseball and softball across the Inland Northwest. The mission is to increase and promote participation and opportunities through a cohesive and unified marketing effort, while also creating a fund to facilitate future field development.

“The main component of this partnership is simple – it’s the common goal of doing this for the kids,” says Philip Helean, Executive Director of SYSA. “We want every child in the Inland Northwest involved so we can see them smiling as they take the field.”

Registration is now open for Spokane Indians Youth Baseball at www.SpokaneIndiansYouthBaseball.org, and city-wide draft evaluations will occur in March. Players can sign up individually for all skill levels, or as a full team in both recreational and competitive divisions. Teams in the younger divisions will be formed based on schools and neighborhoods.

Volunteer coaches are always needed! Coaches may register online, and must provide photo identification. Criminal background checks are conducted for all volunteers in Spokane Indians Youth Baseball.

Baseballtown Charities Complete Baer Park Renovation

After close to eight months of fundraising and construction, Baseballtown Charities, in conjunction with the Reading Fightin Phils, has completed the Baer Park Renovation Project in the northwest section of the City of Reading. The project, first announced in May, was made possible through nearly $90,000 in donations from Colonial Oaks Foundation and the Wyomissing Foundation and private donors through Baseballtown Charities.

“Baseballtown Charities is very pleased with the completion of the renovations at historic Baer Park,” said President of Baseballtown Charities Chuck Domino. “We are anxious to see the kids and parents enjoy the improvements starting this spring. A special thanks to the Colonial Oaks Foundation and the Wyomissing Foundation as well as many other community minded donors who stepped up to the plate to allow Baseballtown Charities to continue our mission of improving the lives of our inner city youth through the sport of baseball.”

Construction on the field began in late summer after a joint cleanup effort from members of the Reading Fightin Phils and students at Alvernia University. The project included a total replacement of the bleachers, major field renovations, and the installation of a chain-linked fence that encompasses the entire facility.

The large scale renovations to Baer Park have earned the praise of city officials, including Mayor Vaughn Spencer.

“On behalf of the City of Reading, I would like to thank Baseballtown Charities, the Colonial Oaks Foundation, and the Wyomissing Foundation, as well as, the other donors,” said Mayor of Reading Vaughn Spencer. “The renovations at Baer Park will improve the lives of our city youth by providing them with a much improved facility.

The project was the first among several fields identified by Baseballtown Charities and the City of Reading Parks and Recreation Commission as area in dire need. Like Baer Park, most of the targets have fallen in repair since their heyday and will hopefully see a revival thanks to the non-profit organization.

“The Reading Recreation Commission is excited for the youth of Reading and the community to begin to enjoy the newly renovated Baer Park this spring,” said Reading Recreation Commission Executive Director Daphne Klahr. “The new turf, fencing, bleachers, and field improvements will be the catalyst for future baseball programming at the park and hopefully marks the beginning of the revitalization of the Northwest Reading community. A big thank you to Chuck Domino and Baseballtown Charities for seeing this project through to completion as well as [to] the Wyomissing Foundation, the Colonial Oaks Foundation and all of the individuals and businesses whose financial support made the project possible. The Reading Recreation Commission looks forward to continuing their partnership with Baseballtown Charities to help improve inner-city parks and ball fields for Reading youth.”

Baer Park was named after the 19th Century Reading Railroad magnate George Baer. Located in the 15th Ward of the City of Reading, the park features a lighted baseball field, tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground, a concession stand and a stone field house on its nine acres of land.

Today, Baer Park is a nerve center of activity in the 15th Ward. On any given day, hundreds of youth can be found using the various attractions or having fun by spending time with friends. Throughout the spring and summer, the park’s baseball field is home to numerous city baseball and softball organizations. It is also the home field for junior high teams from the Reading School District.

On top of donations from the Colonial Oaks Foundation and Wyomissing Foundation, funds were raised at Reading Fightin Phils home games in the summer of 2013. The centerpiece of the team’s fundraising efforts came late in the season when first baseman Jim Murphy donated his prized 1991 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign for a raffle. Fans came out in droves to support the cause thanks to Murphy’s Jaguar and raised over $5,000 for Baseballtown Charities.

As an unconventional means of raising awareness and funds for a non-profit, the raffle helped cement Reading as the Eastern League’s nominee for the inaugural John Henry Moss Community Service Award presented by Minor League Baseball.

Baseballtown Charities, a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity, was founded in 2002 in association with the Reading Phillies in order to keep baseball alive in Reading through charitable donations to underprivileged youth who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to play baseball. The organization also pays tribute to Reading’s rich baseball history.

Since its inception in 2002, the Baseballtown trademark has played a necessary part in the baseball community of Berks County. Under the Baseballtown namesake, FirstEnergy Stadium has played host to the High School All-Star Game and the Olivet’s Boy’s and Girl’s Club Championship. Each year, the organization crowns the King or Queen of Baseballtown to honor the past by recognizing that individual’s accomplishments and contributions to baseball/softball.

Perhaps the biggest accomplishment the organization has overtaken was the construction of Gordon Hoodak Stadium at Lauer’s Park in 2006. Through contributions exceeding $900,000, the youth ballpark was built in a neighborhood that is quickly returning to its glory days. It sits on the grounds of Lauer’s Park Elementary School, named for the former stadium where Babe Ruth and Shoeless Joe Jackson both played. The original housed several professional teams and hosted barnstorming tours from 1907-1941. Reading’s own baseball legend, the late “Broadway” Charlie Wagner, former Red Sox pitcher and roommate of Ted Williams, began his career there.

Squirrels to Host ASK Fun Walk & 5K

Richmond, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels held a press conference on Thursday to announce a partnership with the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation that will include the Squirrels hosting the 2014 ASK Fun Walk & 5K presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield at The Diamond. The Fun Walk & 5K will take place on the morning of Saturday, April 26th, and will precede the Squirrels’ game against the New Britain Rock Cats that evening.

The Fun Walk & 5K, which is the signature event on ASK’s fundraising calendar, will include a course that takes runners and walkers around the historic area and end at home plate at The Diamond. The 2013 ASK Walk & 5K attracted 2,500 participants from throughout the Greater Richmond area and raised over $150,000 to help local children with cancer and their families.

“We are continually looking for ways to do more within this community, and this was a huge opportunity to do just that,” said Flying Squirrels’ Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “Any time you have the chance to work with passionate people to benefit a tremendous cause, you jump at it. That’s what we have done here, and we can’t wait for April 26th.”

The event will begin with check-in and same-day registration at 7 a.m. The 5K Run & Family Fun Walk will begin at 9 a.m. To register in advance of the event or for more information, visit ASKWalk.org.

“As we prepare for what we know will be a historic fifth season in Richmond, we spent some time reflecting back on all the wonderful opportunities we have had to impact this community,” added Parnell. “As we add another tremendous event and partner today, we thought it appropriate to recognize the countless people and organizations that have made our overwhelming success in the past possible.”

Additionally, the Squirrels announced plans to unveil the most comprehensive promotional schedule in their franchise history. The schedule will be announced in a series that will begin on Monday with the release of 2014 fireworks dates.

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends are inviting non-profit organizations to participate in their Community Organization of the Night program during the 2014 season.

The Community Organization program offers non-profits a variety of opportunities to publicize their work at Whitaker Bank Ballpark and on Legends radio broadcasts during each of the Legends’ 70 home games.   Hundreds of organizations throughout central and eastern Kentucky have participated.

“Community involvement has been important to the Legends since day one,” said Legends’ President/COO Andy Shea. “Our Community Organization of the Night program allows us to put the spotlight on the great work being done by many organizations throughout Kentucky, and we’re very happy to help get their message out.”

Organizations may set up a display on the concourse, where they can greet fans and distribute information. Before the game, a representative of each Community Organization of the Night is interviewed on the public address system.   The representative also is a guest on the radio broadcast for a half-inning during the game.   Each organization receives four complimentary tickets to their game.

Solicitation is not permitted, but there is a fund-raising element in the program. To maximize exposure and to boost fund-raising, organizations that reserve their night for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday game will purchase a minimum of 50 Legends fundraiser tickets at four dollars each. Fundraiser tickets may then be sold by the organization for up to the regular face value of 10 dollars, allowing the organization to raise up to six dollars per ticket sold.

“Also, the more tickets sold, the more supporters each organization will have at the game,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends director of community relations and special events.   “It’s fun for everyone involved, and it’s always for a great cause.”
