Squirrels Team Up With Hops For Heroes

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels will partner with Hops for Heroes to serve Homefront IPA at The Diamond during their game against the Trenton Thunder on Thursday, May 23rd. Homefront IPA will be available at the Squirrels’ Virginia Beer Taste the Local stand with all proceeds benefitting Operation Homefront. Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times.

Additionally, the team will hold a special media tasting of Homefront IPA at The Diamond on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 2 p.m. All media members are invited to attend/cover the tasting.

The goal of Hops for Heroes is to raise money and awareness for Operation Homefront through the sale of Homefront IPA and its relationship with the craft brewing and professional baseball industries.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Hops for Heroes to aid Operation Homefront,” said Flying Squirrels Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We are constantly striving to honor and assist our military personnel, and to be able to do in such a creative and baseball-oriented way is extremely exciting for us.”

Hops for Heroes is a charitable effort started in 2011 in Seattle, Washington with Fremont Brewing Company and Chris and Phil Ray of Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU). Homefront IPA is a beer that was created by both breweries and brewed at Fremont in order to raise money for Operation Homefront. The beer was aged on unfinished Louisville Slugger maples bats and sold in both bottles and kegs throughout the Seattle area. 100% of the proceeds were given to the Washington Chapter of Operation Homefront. “From its beginning in 2011, Homefront IPA has been all about beer, baseball, and most importantly, America’s Troops,” said Chris Ray of Center of the Universe Brewery Company. ” It debuted at Safeco Field in 2011, so it was only appropriate to continue that tradition with the Flying Squirrels in 2013. We believe the Flying Squirrels share the same belief in charity and community as we do, making it a perfect partnership.”

Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times. In 2012, Hops for Heroes expanded to include six total breweries from all over the country. Each brewery has been paired with their local Operation Homefront chapter. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the beer will go directly to the local chapters. In addition to the breweries, sponsors have volunteered to donate some of the hops and grains to lower the cost of producing the beer and thus increasing the donation to Operation Homefront. Hops for Heroes has professional baseball player ambassadors for each of the breweries associated with the project. This allows for an increase in awareness of the effort and the charity. Louisville Slugger has also donated six laser-inscribed bats for each brewery.

The media tasting on the 22nd will also include media availability from Flying Squirrels’ personnel, Chris Ray and members of the United States Military based at Fort Lee, located in Petersburg, VA.

Tigers Make Donation to Mayor’s Pantry

NORWICH, CT- The Connecticut Tigers are pleased to announce a donation to the Mayor’s Pantry of Norwich of $5,420 from parking revenue collected at Dodd Stadium.

“Norwich Human Services is pleased to accept this check from the CT Tigers on behalf of our Norwich food pantries,” said Director of Human Services Beverly Goulet. “We appreciate this very generous donation and also wish to thank the CT Tigers fans for their support!”

Tigers Vice President & Assistant General Manager Eric Knighton (far left) and Vice President & General Manager C.J. Knudsen (far right) made the presentation on Friday. Goulet, Norwich Human Services Account Clerk Sheila Molocko and Norwich Human Services Administrative Coordinator Janice Thompson (all pictured) accepted the check on behalf of the city.

“It’s vitally important for the Tigers to be an active member of our community,” said Knudsen. “Norwich does so much for us and this is a great way for us to give back!”

Cutters 5K Run to benefit CDC

The Williamsport Crosscutters, in partnership with the Children’s Development Center, will be holding the 3rd Annual Cutters 5K Run, presented by The Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, on Saturday, June 29th   at Historic Bowman Field.

The race, through Williamsport’s West End, begins at 9am with registration open at 8am. The course has runners starting outside the ballpark entrance with the finish line on the field.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Children’s Development Center of Williamsport. Since 1923, the CDC has been providing services to children with special needs from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s inaugural event attracted over 200 participants while raising $15,000 for the CDC.

“Since the affiliation between Hope Enterprises and the Children’s Development Center was finalized on last year, both organizations have been working together to enhance the service options for children and their families in our area. Having the support of our community with events such as the Cutters 5K Run, allows us to be better prepared to meet the needs of those to be served” according to Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female finisher will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game that evening. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi. “We expect to raise over $10,000 for the CDC with this event.”

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the June 29th Crosscutters vs. Mahoning Valley Scrappers game at 7:05pm. Fluor Field Goes Pink for Mother’s Day

There will be a lot of pink at Fluor Field on Sunday, as the Drive team up with the South Carolina Mountains to Midlands affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, for a special Mother’s Day celebration.

As ladies enter the ballpark, they will be greeted by Drive players with a pink carnation and commemorative pink Drive t-shirt. At the Main Street Gate, Scene on 7’s Kimberly Kelly will be on the pink carpet, interviewing fans and breast cancer survivors.

During the game, the Drive will be wearing pink jerseys and the bases will all be pink. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on all of these during the game through a silent auction, with proceeds going to the South Carolina Mountains to Midlands affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Sand Gnats Annual ‘Pink in the Park’ this Saturday, May 11

Savannah, GA – On Saturday, May 11, the Savannah Sand Gnats join forces with the Coastal Georgia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to bring awareness to breast cancer and raise funds for local breast health programs and critical breast cancer research.

As in years past, Sand Gnats players will take the field in special pink jerseys. Throughout the game, fans are encouraged to bid on each jersey. After the game, the highest bidders will be presented with their jersey by their respective player.

The Sand Gnats will donate All proceeds of the pink jersey auction to Komen Coastal Georgia. Pink bases and coaches jerseys will also be auctioned.

“It’s a great night for a great cause,” says President John Katz.

Any breast cancer survivors who participated in the most recent Savannah Race for the Cure on April 13 are asked to wear their race t-shirt for free admission to the baseball game.

Fans are encouraged to stay afterward for a free fireworks show.

Pink Night jerseys to honor breast cancer fighters

Over the past seven seasons, Paint the Park Pink Night has become one of the State College Spikes’ staple events by raising awareness of the fight against breast cancer. In 2013, the Spikes will join together with the Central PA community to put a personal touch on the battle, as fans can nominate family and friends affected by breast cancer to have their names commemorated on the Spikes’ special pink jerseys worn during the August 3 game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Starting today, and extending through June 1, fans will be able to e-mail the Spikes at painttheparkpink@statecollegespikes.com with the names of anyone who has battled breast cancer. The first 200 names e-mailed to the Spikes will then be printed onto the Spikes’ pink jerseys, which will be worn by the team for the eighth annual Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by Mount Nittany Health.

E-mail nominations must include the name of the person to be honored on the uniform, the name and address of the nominating person, and a short description of the person’s battle. The Spikes will be sharing some of these stories at the ballpark throughout Paint the Park Pink Night.

This occasion marks the first time that any baseball team will be honoring those who have fought breast cancer directly on their game jerseys.

The jerseys will then be auctioned off during the game to benefit the Breast Care Center at Mount Nittany Medical Center, with the winners receiving them on the field shortly after the final out of the night is made. In addition, the Spikes will use pink bats during the game, which will also be auctioned off to benefit the fight against breast cancer.

Single-game tickets for the Paint the Park Pink Night game on August 3, as well as all 38 regular season home dates in the 2013 season, are now available to purchase online at StateCollegeSpikes.com, by calling (814) 272-1711, or by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Box Office. LAKEWOOD, NJ – The 13th annual ALS Celebrity Waiter Event will take place at TGI Friday’s in Brick on Wednesday, May 29th.

The annual event raises money for the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia, the principal charity of the Philadelphia Phillies, and has brought over $120,000 to the organization in the event’s first 12 years.

BlueClaws players will serve as servers and hosts while coaches, including Lakewood manager and former Phillies second baseman Mickey Morandini, will serve as bartender helpers.

“Last year’s event at TGI Friday’s in Brick was a great success,” said BlueClaws General Manager Brandon Marano. “We’re excited to bring the event back to TGI Friday’s and continue what was been a tremendous event for a great cause.”

There will be two dinner seatings: 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm and 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Fans can reserve a table by calling TGI Friday’s directly at 732-262-0937.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia, including 15% of every dinner bill (excluding alcohol) from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm and all tips from dinner bills during the same three hour period.

In addition, there will be a silent auction with a series of great items, from which all proceeds will be donated to the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia. Companies wishing to donate items for the gift auction can do so by contacting TGI Friday’s of Brick at the number above.

“Run for One” June 12 to Benefit One Fund Boston

The Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox affiliate), and emediagroup, along with the Caine Halter YMCA, Go Magazine, Set Up Events, and Fatz, have combined forces to coordinate a 2.62 mile, run/walk on June 12th to raise funds for The One Fund Boston – the official central fund to help the families affected by the tragic events that occurred at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. 100% of proceeds raised will go to The One Fund Boston, who will distribute all collected donations to these families on June 30, 2013.

Swartz, Greenville Run for One event director and endurance sports team member at emediagroup, hopes to see Greenville runners, businesses and residents pull together to show Boston that the tragic turn of events in Boston have not gone unnoticed by the Upstate. “The bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon and the suffering and loss that followed, cannot be reversed or taken away. What we in Greenville can do though is show the city of Boston that we care about them and want to help in any way we can. It’s what we would hope for if the same thing were to happen in our city.”

Runners and walkers will start at the Caine Halter YMCA at 5:00pm. The 2.62 course will wind its way through Cleveland Park from the YMCA and have its own version of Boston Marathon’s “Heartbreak Hill”. Runners and walkers will finish by entering Fluor Field, running by its own version of the iconic Green Monster, and crossing home plate while high-fiving players and coaches from the Drive.

The Greenville Drive will provide all participants with a complimentary ticket to attend that evening’s 7:05pm ballgame between the Greenville Drive & the Charleston River Dogs. The Drive will continue to honor Boston during the ballgame by wearing commemorative jerseys with “Boston” across the front in the Red Sox font, along with the “B Strong” patch on one sleeve. These jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the game, with proceeds going to The One Fund Boston.

Since both emediagroup and the Greenville Drive have ties to Boston, the two had a common interest in making this event happen. “Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray and his team at DMSE have always been great to us at emediagroup,” said Bill Bishop, co-owner of emediagroup.

“The actions that occurred on April 15th were unthinkable, and rocked us all,” commented Drive Co-Owner and President, Craig Brown. “As an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, this tragedy really hit home and the event on June 12th will serve as a rallying point for the Greenville Community to support those affected.”

BlueClaws, CJBC To Host May 18th Blood Drive

LAKEWOOD, NJ – The BlueClaws and Central Jersey Blood Center will host a blood drive at FirstEnergy Park on Saturday, May 18th from 7 am – 2 pm.

The drive will take place in a blood mobile located outside the ballpark, and each donor will receive a pair of tickets to a future BlueClaws game.

The BlueClaws and Central Jersey Blood Center encourage all fans to donate, as this is the time of the year when donations are in the greatest need.

The BlueClaws will play a 4:05 pm game that day against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Marlins).

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Indians will officially kick off their 2013 slate of Boy and Girl Scout events with the Tribe’s first ever Circuit of Fun Scout Night. This year’s new event is set for Saturday, May 11 and will include an exciting pre-game Scout party before the Tribe’s 7:05 p.m. contest against Toledo.

Scout groups participating in the first annual Circuit of Fun Scout Night will be treated to free games in the PNC Plaza located in center field, and have the option of purchasing a discounted food and drink package during the pre-game party, scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Tribe’s award-winning mascot Rowdie will also be on hand to sign autographs and entertain patrons, as well as several players from the first-place Indianapolis Indians squad. Tickets to the Circuit of Fun Scout Night include admission to the regularly scheduled Indians game, a special patch to commemorate the event and the opportunity to stick around after the evening’s contest to run the bases.

The Tribe’s Circuit of Fun Night is only the first of four fantastic scouting events scheduled this year at Victory Field. The Indians will also be hosting overnight Boy Scout Campouts on Friday, June 7 and Friday, June 28, as well as a Girl Scout Campout on Friday, June 21.

Loons Release First-Quarter Sustainability Update

Organization launches new initiatives to reduce energy and waste

MIDLAND, Mich. – In October 2012, the Great Lakes Loons and Dow Diamond announced a corporate partnership with the Dow Chemical Company and Dow Corning to enhance sustainability practices across all aspects of the organization. Today, the Loons released their first quarter report detailing efforts made to reach the ambitious goal of reducing total energy used, water used and waste generated at Dow Diamond by 50 percent in 2020.

Highlights from the first quarter report include a new composting program for Dow Diamond’s food waste, as well as the installation of LED lighting and occupancy control sensors that will significantly reduce kilowatt hours of electricity used and carbon dioxide emissions generated from lighting fixtures.

The composting program was launched in conjunction with Morgan Composting, located in Sears, Mich., to deposit food waste generated from Loons home games and events at Dow Diamond. Once fully composted, the material will be used to fertilize Dow Diamond’s grounds and flower beds. This program will reduce landfill waste, while also reducing the organization’s dependence on fertilizer products for Dow Diamond’s grounds.

The organization recently expanded the use of occupancy control sensors throughout various areas of Dow Diamond. The sensors will result in the reduction of approximately 6,445 kilowatt hours used to light areas of Dow Diamond and lower carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 15,588 pounds-per-year.

More efficient LED lighting has also been installed in various areas of Dow Diamond, which will result in an energy reduction of approximately 15,303 kilowatt hours and reduce the carbon dioxide generate every year by approximately 36,575 pounds.

Over the past several months, Loons staff members have spent time learning from corporate sustainability leaders at Dow and Dow Corning, as well as other regional organizations. From those conversations, the Loons have outlined various areas to increase efficiency, while also reducing the use of energy, water and the amount of waste generated.

“Our organization is fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from world class, global sustainability leaders at both Dow and Dow Corning,” said Loons President and General Manager Paul Barbeau. “Our sustainability partnership is already paying dividends with the new initiatives launched and we will continue to work closely with Dow and Dow Corning to find innovative ways to reach our 2020 sustainability goals.”

Augusta Green Jackets and Fifth Third Bank Team Up to ‘Strikeout Hunger’

Free Ticket With Non-Perishable Food Donation

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta GreenJackets are teaming up with Fifth Third Bank to help “Strikeout Hunger” in the month of May. Starting on May 1, all three Augusta Fifth Third Bank locations will have donation cans to collect nonperishable food items for Golden Harvest Food Bank.

Every person who donates a food item from May 1 to May 18 at a local Fifth Third Bank will receive a free general admission ticket to watch the GreenJackets face the Savannah Sand Gnats on Sunday, May 19.

There will also be food donation cans at Lake Olmstead Stadium during select home games. The first collection dates at Lake Olmstead Stadium will be Friday, May 3 and Saturday May 4 followed by another round of collections on Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18.

Prior to the start of the game on May 19, Fifth Third Bank and the GreenJackets will make an official on-field donation to Golden Harvest Food Bank with all food items collected throughout the drive.

Those interested in pitching in to help “Strikeout Hunger” can donate food items at Fifth Third Banks located at 3007 Pine Needle Rd., 404 S. Belair Rd., or 2756 Peach Orchard Rd.

Captains Charities Baseball Classic is May 3 and 11

(Eastlake, OH) – The Lake County Captains, the Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, has announced the line-up for the ninth Annual News-Herald Captains Charities High School Baseball Classic for 2013. Eight local teams will be featured in four games over two days at Classic Park. The event raises funds for Captains Charities, the non-profit charitable arm of the Lake County Captains organization, as well as the participating schools.

This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 11. On May 3, the Madison Blue Streaks will play the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Lions beginning at 4 PM, followed by the nightcap featuring the Willoughby South Rebels and the Eastlake North Rangers

On May 11, the Painesville Riverside Beavers will take on the Mayfield Wildcats at 1PM and the Painesville Harvey Red Raiders will play the Gilmour Lancers at 4PM.

Tickets for the event will be just $6 each and will be available for purchase at each of the participating schools, on the Captains web site at www.captainsbaseball.com, in person through the Captains Ticket Office during normal business hours, or by calling 440-954-WINS (9467). Daily tickets are goods for both games that day.

Individual game tickets for all Captains home games, may be purchased at the Captains official website www.CaptainsBaseball.com.
