Generals Take On Childhood Cancer on Friday, August 22

Jackson-Generals-2014The Jackson Generals have teamed up with Ellie’s Hats and the Vs Cancer Foundation to take a swing against childhood cancer.

On August 22nd at 7:05, the Generals will be taking on the Chattanooga Lookouts in the hunt for a playoff spot. But, the battle on the field will be in support of those children who are entrenched in a battle of their own – one against cancer.

Ellie's-HatsThe Generals have spent months collecting hundreds hats from teams and individuals across the country. These hats will be donated on the field that night to the charity, “Ellie’s Hats,” who will give them to children receiving cancer treatments. These kids often lose hair from harsh treatments and the hats often become an extension of themselves, almost like a badge of courage.

But, the donation isn’t all that’s going on. Some of the Generals players have volunteered to have their heads shaved that night to help raise money with the Vs. Cancer Foundation. Any individual attending the game will also have the opportunity to shave their heads in support.

Vs-Cancer-logoThe Vs. Cancer Foundation has set up a website here to help the Generals raise even more for the cause. These donations will be split between Ellie’s Hats and a local Jackson cancer treatment center, meaning every penny is used to fight childhood cancer.

Fans are encouraged to bring a new hat to the game to donate to the cause, and if they do they’ll receive free admission.

The Generals have been recognized for their efforts by Minor League Baseball. They have been named one of five finalists for the top charity event/program in all of Minor League Baseball. MiLB gives a number of “Golden Bobblehead Awards” out every season to recognize the best of the best from around the country. This is the first time the Generals have been a finalist in any category.

Jackson Generals GM, Jason Compton said the support for night has been overwhelming. “We’ve had teams from all over the country send in hats. We’ve had individuals sending along hats or making a donation to the Vs. Cancer web page,” Compton said. “It just goes to show how when it comes to a cause like this, we’re all on the same team. The response for this has been nothing short of inspiring. The recognition from MiLB is just icing on the cake. Any added exposure and awareness that comes from our efforts will just get everyone behind these children who are fighting for their lives.”

Crawdads Serve at Hickory Soup Kitchen

Hickory-CrawdadsThe Hickory Crawdads recently lent a helping hand at the Hickory Soup Kitchen, with the ‘Dads players helping to clean, prepare, and serve food on August 7th & 8th.

Six players and one front office member volunteered over four separate shifts during the two-day span. The Crawdads helped out with everything from peeling potatoes and bagging groceries, to serving food and interacting with the guests.

Hickory-Soup-Kitchen“We are always happy to help out in the community when we get a chance,” said Crawdads General Manager Mark Seaman. “It was a good opportunity for the players to give back and see first hand some of the challenges that our fellow citizens face on a daily basis.”

The Hickory Soup Kitchen began in 1983 with six downtown churches before moving to its current location in 1990. HSK serves an average of 152 people per day and more than 70,000 people every year. The kitchen is open weekdays from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Silver Hawks to Collect 3,000 lbs. of Food for St. Vincent de Paul

South-Bend-Silver-Hawks-2014August 15th the annual Faith and Family Night returns to Four Winds Field. St. Vincent de Paul has partnered with your South Bend Silver Hawks to host the annual event. Through this partnership, your Silver Hawks and St. Vincent de Paul hope to bring the community together for a night of faith and fellowship.

St-Vincent-de-PaulArrive early for a pregame concert featuring Cody Collier. The performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. Also taking place is a canned food drive to help stock the pantries of St. Vincent de Paul. Bring non-perishable food items, or a $5 donation, to the game that evening and receive two (2) complimentary tickets for August 18th, 19th or 20th. Guests who bring the most donations in weight will have a chance to win an outdoor suite to use during a game in the 2015 Silver Hawks season.   The goal is to collect 3,000 lbs. of food during the food drive.

“The Silver Hawks are once again excited to be partnering with St. Vincent de Paul this year on our Faith and Family Night.   We have built a great partnership over the last couple of seasons but what excites me the most is the canned food drive and the opportunity we have to help those around Michiana that are in need.   We have set a goal to collect at least 3,000 lbs. of food on Friday night and it is my hope that we shatter that mark.   We live in one of the greatest communities with some of the most generous baseball fans that I have ever met.   So I am asking everyone to please bring at least one item on Friday night to donate and let’s help fill St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.”   states Joe Hart, Silver Hawks’ Team President.

Lowell-SpinnersThe Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, announced their home game on Wednesday, August 20 against the Connecticut Tigers will be dubbed the “Artie T. Party,” to support the Market Basket family within our community.

The evening will include a number of activities and events geared towards Market Basket employees and past Market Basket associates who have found themselves without a job during the current events within the company.

Market-Basket“We view ourselves as a community organization,” said Spinners President and General Manager Tim Bawmann. “Clearly this issue has been a dominant topic in our community over the past several weeks. We hope this night will be an opportunity for some of our valued community members to come enjoy a night at the park.”

As part of the event, Market Basket employees will be able to receive tickets for just $4, a homage to the four percent everyday discount Market Basket offers customers, by showing their employee ID badge. All associates will be invited onto the field for a pre-game parade around the LeLacheur Park field and special guests will be a part of the Lowell Spinners pre-game show.

“It’s not about who’s right and who’s wrong,” said Bawmann. “This is about recognizing the role Market Basket plays in our community and the invaluable role the associates play within our community. This is about giving them a night to relax, enjoy a ballgame and be entertained.”

Dragons to Host 2014 Anthem Health and Fitness Carnival

Dayton-DragonsOn Sunday, August 17, the plaza outside Fifth Third Field will host a multitude of fun, free activities as a part of the annual Anthem Health & Fitness Carnival. This annual event is a great opportunity for parents and their children to learn about healthy lifestyles, grab some cool giveaways and enjoy a day of family fun at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, but as early as 12:30 p.m., fans can come to the plaza to enjoy FREE health screenings, chair massages, airbrush tattoos, balloon animals, raffle prizes including a fitbit flex, free bike helmets for the first 100 kids (ages 5-12), inflatable games, and much more, courtesy of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Kettering Health Network. Dragons mascots Heater and Gem will be in attendance, as well. The carnival will run until 2:30 p.m.

American-Red-CrossThe American Red Cross is facing a looming blood shortage leading to an urgent need for donors of all blood types to roll up a sleeve and give. Since May, donations through the Red Cross are down approximately 8 percent, resulting in about 80,000 fewer donations than expected. The number of donors continues to decline and the shortfall is significant enough that the Red Cross could experience an emergency situation in the coming weeks.

“Many people say they never fully understood the importance of donating blood until they or someone they love needed it,” said Colin Riccobon, External Communications Manager of the Red Cross Northeastern Pennsylvania Blood Services Region. “Summer months are always a challenging time for blood collections, and there are patients depending on donors every day to give them hope.”

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Led by internationally-acclaimed instructor Kathryn Budig, the Charleston RiverDogs will host “Downward Facing RiverDog,” a yoga class that will be held on Riley Park’s emerald green grass. From the downward facing dog post to the firefly pose, all levels of yoga are welcome.

The Drive’s Reading All-Stars program is an exciting initiative to get Upstate students interested in reading at a young age, and the participants not only get the benefit of a celebration day with the Drive, but also the satisfaction of learning and sparking their imagination through reading!

Monday’s game begins at 7:05, but the action starts at 6:30 as members of the Summer Reading All-Stars program from all across the Upstate will get to walk in a pregame parade. In addition, members of the program will get the chance to participate in the Drive’s in-game entertainment.

Weekend Proves Successful for Charities at Pelicans Ballpark

Myrtle-Beach-PelicansThe reason behind Vice President & General Manager Andy Milovich’s in-game prostate exam on July 24 came full circle this past Saturday with Coaches vs. Cancer Night. Milovich agreed to the exam if the team could raise Fierce Fallon’s Facebook Page to 10,000 ‘Likes’. Saturday night acted as a fundraiser for Fierce Fallon and featured a mini-football giveaway, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and more with all proceeds benefiting Fallon. All-in-all the night raised over $6,500. The highlight of the night however, came before the anthem was even sung.

Coaches-vs-CancerFallon made her grand entrance to the ballpark with family and friends in the back of a pick-up truck as her favorite song, Katy Perry’s Roar, boomed throughout the stadium. Once arriving to the home dugout she made her way to the pitcher’s mound for a ceremonial first pitch. Moments later, after player introductions, Pelicans starter Chad Bell took his place on the mound and prepared to face the first hitter of the night, Fierce Fallon. One pitch from Bell was all it took as her baseball debut went down in the books as a solo home run and one of the most memorable knocks at TicketReturn.Com Field. She took her victory lap around the bases to a standing ovation and roaring crowd.

“She is such a fighter and has inspired so many people over the past ten months,” stated Milovich. “The fact that we had the opportunity to not only help raise money but provide her with a memorable night is very special to me and our entire staff.”

The Saturday night post on Fallon’s page included a video of her home run with the comment, “Fallon had the most amaz-wing time tonight at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans game. Here she is hitting a HOME RUN at her first ever at bat! Thank you to everyone that made this possible!!!” Fallon also told her mother that “It was the best day of my life.”

Mary-Kay-Foundation-logo150Saturday was only the start of the Pelicans’ charitable efforts this past weekend. Sunday was Pink in the Park with a focus on breast cancer awareness. The night featured a mini-base giveaway with the words “Save 2nd Base” to the first 1,000 ladies. Additional highlights included a silent auction with pink bats and bases. All proceeds from the auction, 50/50 raffle sales and more benefited the Mary Kay Foundation. That number exceeded $4,000.

Sunday also marked the end of the Pelicans Strike Out Cancer Series. The series featured one night each month, April through August, and highlighted five different forms of cancer (esophageal, skin, testicular, prostate and breast). On each night the team dawned special jerseys which have been up for auction all season at myrtlbeachpelicans.com. The auction concludes next Friday, August 15th at 5:00 PM. The auction includes jerseys worn by Joey Gallo, Jorge Alfaro, Manager Joe Mikulik and more.

Tampa-YankeesThe Tampa Yankees, in conjunction with the Florida State League and the Miami Marlins, are pleased to announce Austin Kaufman as their 2014 scholarship award winner. The Florida State League Scholarship committee award 12 individuals with educational scholarships. The committee approved the awards after a review of the applications submitted by all the Florida State League teams.

Austin Kaufman is a graduate of Robinson High School. He is currently attending the University of South Florida – St. Pete Campus before he plans to transfer to the University of South Florida – Tampa Campus. Austin plans to get his degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Austin is the son of Stadium Manager, Ron Kaufman who has been with the organization for 16 years.

Austin will be honored at the Tampa Yankees home game on August 7th, versus the Brevard County Manatees at George M. Steinbrenner Field. In addition, he was introduced during a pre-game ceremony at the Miami Marlins game on Sunday, August 3rd along with the other Florida State League teams’ award winners.

The Miami Marlins/Florida State League scholarship program is awarded to students that are an employee of, or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club and must be at least a high school junior by the 2014 fall term. The Miami Marlins have sponsored this program for fifteen years and have contributed over $137,000 to the Florida State Program.

Bats donate over $6,800 to Kosair Children’s Hospital

Louisville-BatsThe Louisville Bats Baseball Club will donate more than $6,800 to Kosair Children’s Hospital, the beneficiary of the first ever Star Wars Night held on Sunday, July 27 at Louisville Slugger Field.

A crowd of 10,015 showed up at the ballpark to watch the Bats play host to the visiting Charlotte Knights in special edition Star Wars jerseys. On Monday, July 28 the authentic jerseys were put up for auction on batsbaseball.com and available for bidding until Monday, August 4.

Kosair-Childrens-HospitalWith the bidding period now over, the 50 jerseys were sold for $6,854.80 with all proceeds going to Kosair Children’s Hospital.

“Star Wars Night was a great success and we are pleased to be able to make this gift to Kosair Children’s Hospital,” said Bats President and CEO Gary Ulmer.

For more than a century, Kosair Children’s Hospital has cared for the children of Kentucky and Southern Indiana without regard to their families’ ability to pay. Kosair Children’s Hospital is Kentucky’s only full-service, free-standing pediatric care facility dedicated exclusively to caring for children and is an advocate for the health and well-being of all children.

Drive to benefit Lowcountry Food Bank on final Harris Teeter 2-for-$20 Date Night Tuesdays from Nash FM

Charleston-RiverDogsTuesday nights at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park this season have consistently featured Harris Teeter and its 2-for-$20 Date Night Special for couples to enjoy a fun night of Charleston RiverDogs baseball. For the final two Tuesday games at The Joe, the RiverDogs are partnering with Harris Teeter to host a special food drive to benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank.

The Harris Teeter Food Drive is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12 and Tuesday, August 26 at Riley Park, coinciding with RiverDogs games that are scheduled for 7:05 pm. Fans who bring at least two non-perishable Harris Teeter brand food items to the Riley Park Box Office for either of those games will get $2 off any individual ticket. The Lowcountry Food Bank will receive all of the donations from this food drive.

Lowcountry Food Bank“The RiverDogs are always proud to partner with Harris Teeter, and we are thrilled to host this food drive during our final Harris Teeter 2-for-$20 Date Night Tuesdays from Nash FM,” said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. “The Lowcountry Food Bank has also been a big partner through our HOPE Week initiative and our ‘Smokin’ Chef’ series on Sundays. We fully encourage our fans to join the fight against hunger when they come to these Tuesday games.”

In addition to fan donations on August 12 and August 26, Harris Teeter will also donate 50 cases of canned food to the Lowcountry Food Bank. The $2 ticket discount for fan donations may not be combined with the Harris Teeter 2-for-$20 Date Night Special. Couples that show a VIC Card at the box office may receive the Date Night Special, which covers two tickets to the game, two tacos, two fountain drinks and a nacho tray for only $20.

Bees Visit Shriners Hospitals for Children

Salt-Lake-BeesThe Salt Lake Bees visited Shriners Hospitals for Children earlier today to take part in the hospital’s Summer Fest. Brennan Boesch, Tony Campana, Vance Albitz, Shawn O’Malley, Caleb Clay and Bumble all took part in the event and helped run games, played whiffle ball, danced with the children, took pictures and signed autographs.

Shriners-hospital-for-childPatients currently staying in the hospital as well as out-patients and their families were invited to attend and were able to enjoy carnival games, face painting, food, a rock climbing wall and a live DJ. The Bees group also took part in the activities themselves as everyone gave the games a try and Albitz and O’Malley sported super hero face paint.

“I almost forgot the event was for the kids. I was having so much fun!” said Albitz.

Campana has special ties to the event as he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma when he was seven years old. After recieving treatment for ten years Campana was declared cancer free. He tries to visit hospitals whenever get the chance.
