Biloxi Shuckers make major community impact in 2017

BIBiloxi ShuckersLOXI, MS – In a season marked by several on-field accomplishments in the third year of Minor League Baseball on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Biloxi Shuckers are most proud of their various community outreach efforts. From theme nights to jersey auctions, the Shuckers have made a financial and symbolic impact on their community throughout the 2017 season.

The Shuckers were nominated by the Minor League Baseball Community as a finalist for a prestigious “Golden Bobblehead” award for the “Best Community Promotion or Event” after helping with the Hattiesburg/Petal tornado relief efforts and William Carey vs. Biloxi Shuckers exhibition game. Shuckers’ employees traveled to Petal, Mississippi to assist cleanup crews. The tornado caused damage to the campus of nearby William Carey University, so the Shuckers scheduled a benefit exhibition game against the school’s baseball team before the first road trip of the season. The game raised $6,090 for the university’s tornado recovery efforts. This effort coupled with numerous other initiatives garnered the recognition.

In addition to the recognition by Minor League Baseball, the Shuckers were also a finalist for the Southern League’s Community Service Award.

Shuckers’ front office members laid the groundwork for a successful season with several other community initiatives. Employees laid sod at an athletic complex in Moss Point, Mississippi to revitalize the area’s youth baseball program.

In partnership with Walmart, the inaugural Shuckers “Hit the Books” reading program brought Schooner the Seagull to 17 schools and over 10,000 students to incentivize reading with Shuckers tickets as a reward.

Since their inception, the Shuckers have had a strong relationship with nearby Keesler Air Force Base and the substantial military presence on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That trend continued in 2017, as every Monday became “Military Monday” with special discounts for active and retired members of the armed forces. Special camouflage jerseys, worn every Monday and designed with input from Keesler staff, and were auctioned off at the end of the season with proceeds benefiting local military causes.

Throughout the season, the Shuckers have partnered with several charitable organizations to raise money and awareness for deserving local causes. Three additional jersey auctions earlier this season have brought in money for the March of Dimes, Mississippi Center for Autism, and Favre4Hope breast cancer research.

The Shuckers have also hosted a Christmas in July toy drive for the Uplift Foundation, Seatbelt Safety night for the K&J Foundation (started by team photographer Brian Pearse), and Skin Cancer Awareness night in partnership with the MiLB Charities Sun Safety Initiative.

Youth outreach was not limited to the “Hit the Books” program. The Shuckers turned their two “Education Day” games into vocational field trips, with visits from Biloxi Fire and Police, NASA, the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Department of Marine Resources, University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, and Mississippi State University’s Coastal Research Extension.

Former New York Mets catcher and Biloxi native Barry Lyons was formally invited into the Shuckers organization as an ambassador prior to the 2017 season, and the team assisted him in the creation of the first series of Shuckers Kids Clinics for local youth. In addition, the “Field of Dreams” program allowed more than 100 young baseball and softball players from the area to take the field alongside Shuckers players for the national anthem.

In partnership with the Knights of Columbus, the Biloxi Shuckers collected 765 lbs of food/product during a food drive on Sunday, July 30th for them to distribute in the community.

In addition to these widespread efforts, the Shuckers have also made numerous player and mascot appearances in the community over the course of the season. The Shuckers in-kind donations and in-stadium fundraising initiatives have raised $155,455.91 for over 100 charitable organizations. The Biloxi Shuckers understand the responsibility that comes with their platform in the community and are determined to make a positive impact on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

In addition to monetary contributions, the Biloxi Shuckers front office staff have logged 265 community volunteer hours thus far in 2017. Those hours have been spent working with area schools, NCBC’s Child Development Center, Humane Society of South Mississippi, VA Medical Center, Loaves and Fishes and cleanup efforts from Hurricane Harvey.

Dragons Website Going Pink in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

DAYTON, OH – The Dayton Dragons have gone pink during the month of October. In partnership with Kettering Health Network, the Dragons have turned their website pink to support the upcoming Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Dragons website, www.daytondragons.com, will remain pink to help draw attention to the efforts by Kettering Health Network to increase Breast Cancer awareness in the Miami Valley.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and it is estimated that over 40,000 lives will be lost to breast cancer in 2017. And while the breast cancer diagnosis rate has increased, there has been a steady drop in the overall breast cancer death rate since the early 1990’s.

You can help win the fight. The walk and donations go directly to the support, transportation, recovery, and other needs that arise with the diagnosis of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society also invests in groundbreaking breast cancer research to better understand, prevent, find, and treat the disease.

The 2017 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will be at Fifth Third Field on October 21 at 8:00 a.m. This event is part of a national fundraising effort. In 2016 alone, over 1 million walkers across the country collected more than $60 million to help fight this disease.

2017 Golf Tournament Date Announced

“The Rome Braves 9th Annual Celebrity Shootout Golf Tournament will be held in conjunction with the Floyd County Police Department on Friday, November 3rd at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome. The day will consist of registration and driving range at 9:30am, a shotgun start at 11am, followed by an awards reception after the tournament. Food and drinks will be provided. Teams or individuals can register at the Floyd County Police Station, the ticket office located at State Mutual Stadium, home of the Rome Braves or by emailing the registration form to Christina.Shaw@braves.com. D-Braves donate to Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association

DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville Braves presented a donation of nearly $1,200 to the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association Monday afternoon as part of MiLB’s CommUNITY initiative featured throughout the month of August. The D-Braves raised $2,397.32 from the auction of game-worn cancer awareness jerseys. The proceeds were split between the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association and the Centra Foundation.

The D-Braves 2017 Cancer Awareness Night on July 8 marked the seventh year in which the Braves wore and auctioned cancer awareness jerseys.

“We’re happy to support the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association and the support they provide local cancer patients,” said Danville Braves General Manager David Cross.

Stand Up To Cancer on Sunday, August 27

Join the Mud Hens and Fifth Third Bank as we take a stand against cancer during Stand Up To Cancer Night at Fifth Third Field on Sunday, August 27. The event aims to raise awareness, as well as funds. for Stand Up To Cancer’s accelerated cancer research programs, while shining a spotlight on those fighting the disease.

“I Stand Up For” placards will be handed out before the game. Fans can personalize their placards as a way of supporting a family member or friend fighting cancer, honoring survivors, or remembering those they’ve lost. During a break in the game action, we’ll share the placard messages on our giant video board.

For each strikeout a Mud Hens pitcher registers during the game, Fifth Third will donate $5,300 to Stand Up To Cancer, an initiative dedicated to raising funds to accelerate the pace of research to get new therapies to patients quickly to save lives now. Fifth Third will also donate $1 per game attendee.

Eight pediatric care patients from the Toledo Children’s Hospital will be honorary Mud Hens for a day! As part of this experience, they will be announced as our honorary Starters of the Game and will get their own baseball card. During the game, fans will be able to visit the kids on the main concourse and get their cards signed by each of them!

Fans are encouraged to take photos at the ballpark that night and post them to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #howifight. Fifth Third will donate $5.30 to Stand Up To Cancer for every eligible public use of the #howifight hashtag.

Pink Ribbon Girls to be Honored as Community All-Star

The Dragons and Vectren will honor the Pink Ribbon Girls organization during the unique “Community All-Stars” program on Thursday, August 24, at 7:00 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field.

The Dayton community is a great place to live, work and play. But what makes Dayton truly great are the people that call Dayton home. We have great people and great organizations in our community that do incredible things each and every day. Throughout the season, the Dragons and Vectren will honor five “All-Stars” with a special inning break tribute in recognition of their service.

Pink Ribbon Girls Story

Pink Ribbon Girls is an organization founded by breast cancer survivors who have a passion for supporting and empowering others who are currently in the fight against breast and women’s reproductive cancers. The organization is currently in its sixth year and serves women in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus.

Women that are diagnosed with breast cancer are given information about Pink Ribbon Girls before they even leave the hospital. The organization focuses many of their efforts on those who are dealing with the initial shock and uncertainty of this diagnosis.

Pink Ribbon Girls not only offers services to provide support for the family member with cancer, but also their entire family. Thanks to partnerships with Scratch Event Catering and Rush Transportation, the organization provides three meals per week for the entire family, housecleaning services, rides to and from treatment, and peer support.

The organization serves all women who are suffering from breast or women’s reproductive cancer and their families. There is no income base or age requirement.

President and CEO Heather Salazar has been impressed with the incredible support of the people in this area, “What this community is doing to change the lives of women and families facing the hardest battle of their lives is really, truly what a community should be about and Dayton has raised the bar in that regard.”

Pink Ribbon Girls hosts many events throughout the year, but “Ignite the Fight” is the organization’s signature event and is coming up on Saturday, October 21. Dodgers and MidFirst Bank to “Pack the Park Pink” Friday as Part of 20th Season Celebration Weekend

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Dodgers and MidFirst Bank will team up to “Pack the Park Pink” Friday as part of 20th Season Celebration Weekend at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Dodgers players and coaches will take the field at 7:05 p.m. Friday against the Round Rock Express wearing special pink jerseys and hats, and the evening will culminate with an all-pink fireworks show following the game.

A silent auction will take place throughout the night for the autographed, game-worn OKC Dodgers jerseys and hats, with proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game in support of the cause, and representatives from Susan G. Komen for the Cure will be on the concourse throughout the night to provide information about the organization. The mission of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is “to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cure.”

Nine breast cancer survivors will take the field with Dodgers players prior to the game. Breast cancer survivors will also sing the national anthem and throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Kristi Mahaffey, president of the board of directors for Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Central and Western Oklahoma, as well as a commercial lender with MidFirst Bank, will participate in the pregame delivery of team lineup cards to the umpires.

OU Medical’s mobile mammogram vehicle will be at the ballpark offering tours and information about their statewide services throughout the game.

In addition to “Pack the Park Pink,” the Dodgers are celebrating the 20th season of Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark during their series against Round Rock this weekend. Gates open at 6 p.m. Friday and the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a 20th Season Commemorative Stein, presented by Okie811. A new commemorative brick display will be unveiled by the OKC Dodgers Baseball Foundation prior to the game on the exterior Mickey Mantle Plaza.

The 20th Season All-Ballpark Team, as voted by fans, will be unveiled prior to Saturday’s 7:05 p.m. game and former Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick will throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Norick was instrumental in the MAPS (Metropolitan Area Projects) program, which funded the ballpark’s construction.

Todd Van Poppel, who threw the first official pitch at the ballpark in 1998 for the RedHawks and pitched 11 seasons in the Majors, will throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to Sunday’s 6:05 p.m. game. Sunday’s game falls on a Chaparral Energy Family Sunday, featuring family friendly activities such as pregame player autographs and kids can run the bases after the game. Van Poppel will also be available to sign autographs during one inning of the game. The series wraps up with a 7:05 p.m. game Monday against the Express at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Volcanoes Celebrate Cancer Awareness Weekend

KEIZER, Ore. – The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes kick started the team’s 16th annual Cancer Awareness Weekend on August 4 when they continued their four-game series against the Everett AquaSox at 6:35 p.m. at Volcanoes Stadium.

The Volcanoes held a pregame ceremony where several cancer survivors met the Volcanoes starters along the first base line and formed a semi-circle behind the pitcher’s mound.

Once everyone gathered around the bump, Dr. Bud Pierce of Hematology Oncology of Salem spoke on the field about the evening’s festivities and the state of cancer research.

On Thursday, Pierce, a founder of Cancer Awareness Weekend, said the partnership with the Volcanoes to establish the event has been quite beneficial for the Salem-Keizer community.

“Lisa [Walker] was a patient of ours and was the driver for this idea, and I thought it was a great idea so we partnered. … We together have created a special event for the Volcanoes, our community and our patients with their families,” Pierce said.

The Volcanoes will continue to celebrate and honor cancer survivors as well as those lives that were lost to the disease when the Volcanoes play the AquaSox this evening at 6:35 p.m. and tomorrow evening at 5:05 p.m.

At the conclusion of the fifth inning, everyone in attendance will to hold up “We Remember” cards, if they so choose, with a name or names of someone or multiple individuals who have been touched by cancer written on them.

Pierce said the goal of this weekend is to unite the community and celebrate life.

“It’s really about coming together and spending time together. Cancer is a fearsome disease in our time … and somehow stepping away from that intensity and coming together around the great American pastime just not only makes it more bearable, [but it also] makes life better.”

FIFTH THIRD BANK STEPS UP TO THE PLATE WITH BIGGER DONATIONS ON “STAND UP TO CANCER NIGHT”

LANSING, Mich. – Fifth Third Bank Western Michigan and the Lansing Lugnuts are teaming up to help fight cancer when the Bank hosts a special Stand Up To Cancer Night at Cooley Law School Stadium on Saturday, August 12. Fifth Third will offer fun, interactive fan activities during the game as part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to raise awareness and contributions to support cancer research.

Among the in-game promotions planned include:

  • A $5,300 donation to Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) that the bank will make for every strikeout that the home team accomplishes during the game. This is an increase from the $530 donation per strikeout last year.

Tampa Yankees Announce HOPE Week 2017

Tuesday, August 8th – The Tampa Yankees will attend the Lighthouse Center for Creative Learning (a school for children with autism) and hang out with kids, including playing catch and reading, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Students and families from the center are invited to attend the 7:00 p.m. game vs. the Clearwater Threshers and take the field with the T-Yanks as part of the Baseball Buddies Program.

Wednesday, August 9th – The Tampa Yankees will visit A Kid’s Place of Tampa Bay and hang out with the kids, playing games from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

“A Kid’s Place provides residential services to children from birth to age 18, who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment and to provide a variety of services which meet the social, educational, medical, and psychological needs of the child.” – www.akidsplacetb.org.

Thursday, August 10th – The Tampa Yankees plan to visit Trinity Café and assist in serving lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Trinity Café opened in 2001. Its mission is “to restore a sense of dignity to the homeless & hungry while serving a nutritious meal. We faithfully treat all of God’s children with dignity, compassion, love, and respect.” – www.trinitycafe.org.

Friday, August 11th – The Make-A-Wish Foundation will attend the 7:00 p.m. game between the Tampa Yankees and St. Lucie Mets and accept donations. The foundation will also participate in the Baseball Buddies Program, giving kids the opportunity to go on the field and meet players. A representative from the Make-A-Wish Foundation will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. More information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation can be found at www.wish.org.

Saturday, August 12th – HOPE Week will conclude with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s “Cut for a Cure” campaign as well as “Blue’s Back to School Party.”

Tampa Yankees players, staff and fans will be able to help pediatric cancer research by having their heads shaved, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Pediatric cancer survivors will be on hand to shave the heads of participants and will then get to participate in the Baseball Buddies program prior to the 6:30 p.m. game vs. the St. Lucie Mets. Fans are also invited to join Blue for a back-to-school party. The first 1,000 kids 14-and-younger will receive a T-Yanks drawstring bag, courtesy of OneMain Financial. The night will end with a post-game fireworks show.

Kettering Health Network Presents Breast Cancer Awareness Day

August 1, 2017

Kettering Health Network presents Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Sunday, August 6 at Fifth Third Field when the Dayton Dragons host the Lansing Lugnuts at 2:00 p.m. All Dragons players, coaches, front office and game day staff will be wearing pink sweatbands during the game.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Event will take place on the plaza where Kettering Health Network will be passing out pink rally towels. Kettering Breast Evaluation Centers will also have a booth on the plaza. In addition, the American Cancer Society will have information on the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk which is being held at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, October 21.

Breast Cancer fighter Jennifer Michaels will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Michaels had a routine mammogram done in July of 2013. Following, the mammogram, a biopsy was performed and she received a surgeon’s opinion. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in August of the same year.

Michaels stressed the importance of regular checkups and mammograms, “It’s better to catch it early then to wait for it to develop.”

Having undergone four years of treatment, Michaels continues her fight against breast cancer today. She sees Dr. Lavelle at the Kettering Cancer Center.

“Breast cancer is not discriminatory. It doesn’t matter if your family has a history of it,” Michaels explained. “It can even happen to the healthiest of people.”

As a part of a national fundraising effort, the 2017 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will take place at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, October 21 starting at 8 a.m.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Night on Aug. 11

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Prostate Cancer Awareness Night on Friday, August 11, serves as a fundraiser for the Morton Plant Mease Foundation and Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure. In addition to on-field ceremonies, in-game entertainment, and vendors on the concourse, there will be a silent auction. Guest may bid on the special blue, game-worn jerseys Threshers players and coaches will be sporting on the field that night. Winners of the jersey bidding may go on the field after the game to receive their autographed jersey in-person from the player. Other items in the auction include Phillies memorabilia and merchandise and gift cards from local businesses. Be sure to visit Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure table for a chance to win a team-autographed bat.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6:15 p.m. game with the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The first 1,000 men to arrive will receive a free Men’s Zipper Travel Bag courtesy of Academy Bus.

Paint the Park Pink, Super Splash Day on Spikes slate

The State College Spikes return home Sunday to begin a three-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park that runs through Tuesday. Highlights of the trio of games include the annual Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by Mount Nittany Health on Sunday, as well as Super Splash Day at Tuesday’s noon game.

The Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals) will provide the opposition for all three games, starting with Sunday’s 6:05 p.m. as the Spikes and Mount Nittany Health will team up once gain to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer on Paint the Park Pink Night.

The Spikes will take the field in special Pink Boxing Robe Themed Jerseys, to symbolize the fight against breast cancer an honor those who have engaged in the fight. These jerseys will then go up for bids in a Jersey-off-the-Back Auction to benefit the Mount Nittany Health Foundation, which supports the work done by the Breast Care Center at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

In addition, the first 1,000 fans through the gates when they open at 5 p.m. will receive a Pink Team Poster, featuring a photo taken with the Spikes’ Opening Day roster in the Pink Boxing Robe Themed Jerseys. Plus, the skies will light up with a Spike-tacular FIREWORKS show after the game.

The fun then continues with Monday Buck Night, presented by 95.3 FM 3WZ, as the Spikes take on the Doubledays at 7:05 p.m. Fans can get into the park with $1 Outfield Bleacher seats, then enjoy $1 hot dogs, $1 small sodas and $1 peanut boats throughout the game.

The homestand concludes on Tuesday with the annual Super Splash Day game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as Ike’s Kids Zone turns into the Splash Zone for kids of all ages. First pitch between the Spikes and Doubledays will be at noon, and fans can enjoy another $2 Walking Taco Tuesday, presented by B94.5.

Kids will also have the opportunity to run the bases after Sunday’s game, as well as a special chance after Tuesday’s game, thanks to Wonderland Charter Schools.

Saturday’s ‘Strike Out Cancer Night’ includes FREE TICKETS to all survivors

There are heroes all around us….fighters and survivors who have taken on cancer and won! There are also those that lost their battles…taken from us too soon, but with permanent places in our hearts and our memories.

On Saturday, July 29, the Bisons will honors those heroes that have won their battles and remember those that didn’t. As the team hosts the Louisville Bats (7:05 p.m.) at Coca-Cola Field, we ask your help to STRIKE OUT CANCER, presented by WNY Imaging Group with proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Network of WNY and the American Cancer Society.

On STRIKE OUT CANCER night, we will honor ALL CANCER SURVIVORS with a FREE TICKET to the game. Just CLICK HERE by the end of the day on Friday, July 28 to register for your free ticket. One survivor will also be chosen at random to throw out the first pitch on Strike Out Cancer Night.

On Saturday, we will also encourage all fans to WEAR LAVENDER in support of the fight against all cancers. Anyone who does will receive a FREE RAFFLE TICKET for one of a number of great gift items. Additional raffle tickets will be available at the game. Shorebirds Present Donation To Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute

SALISBURY, Md. — The Delmarva Shorebirds are proud to announce the results from the 2017 PRMC Pink Pitch Night to benefit the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute, as the team presented a check for $2,270.61.

“Our organization is always happy to help a very important part of the community such as the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute,” Shorebirds general manager Chris Bitters said. “Thank you to our fans who answered the call and showed their support with donations.”

The 2017 PRMC Pink Pitch Night was held on Saturday, May 13th at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium when the Delmarva Shorebirds faced the Greenville Drive. Shorebirds players and coaches wore special pink jerseys that were auctioned off during the game, with the funds raised being presented to the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Delmarva has more special jersey nights scheduled in 2017, including a Christmas in July jersey night on Saturday, July 29, a Maryland Pride Thursday jersey auction on August 24, and an Orange Friday jersey auction on September 1. All three auctions will benefit the Shorebirds’ Fly Together Fund.
