Cell Phones for Soldiers

The Tampa Yankees have partnered with Cell Phones for Soldiers, a national nonprofit, to help collect cell phones to help our troops call home from overseas.

Newer or gently used cell phones from all service providers will be accepted at any of our Military Monday home games throughout the season, at our Bill Currie Ford Armed Forces Night on May 16th, and at our Everyday Heroes Night on July 4th. The proceeds from all donated cell phones are used to purchase calling cards for our troops. Fans who donate a new or gently used cell phone will receive a free ticket to our Monday, August 24th home game against the Dunedin Blue Jays at 7:00pm.   Help us help our military and veterans. Your donation will truly make a difference and make you a hero to our nation’s heroes.

Founded in 2004 by Robbie and Brittany Bergquist, Cell Phones For Soldiers is dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans. In 2013, Cell Phones For Soldiers provided U.S. troops with more than 23 million “Minutes That Matter” talk time and distributed more than 380,000 prepaid international calling cards. Since 2004, the nonprofit has also recycled more than 11.3 million cell phones reducing the impact on landfills.

Little League Day

Tampa, Fla. – The Tampa Yankees will host their annual Pepsi Cola Little League Day at Steinbrenner Filed on Sunday, May 3rd when they take on the Lakeland Flying Tigers at 1:00 PM.

The first 250 fans to enter the stadium will receive a Collector’s Pepsi Cola Yankees Pin. All guests wearing their Little League uniforms will receive free admission from the Box Office (players and coaches).

There will be Food Trucks that will be serving food outside of the stadium beginning at 11:00AM. Food Trucks participating will be Tasty Stacy, Sarge’s BBQ, Disco Donuts, Kona Ice, Enjoi Sweets & Company, Hott Mess, and Street Surfer. After the game, the Tampa Yankees invite kids, ages 14 and under, to run the bases on Steinbrenner Field.

Palma Ceia Little League Challenger Teams will play a game on Steinbrenner Field after the Tampa Yankees game concludes. The Tampa Yankees Actively assist youth baseball and softball programs in the Tampa area to promote the Little League Mission, developing qualities of citizenship, discipline, teamwork, and physical well-being.

Tickets are $4 for general admission, $6 for reserved seating. Fan can also purchase the Sonny’s BBQ 2-Pack for $20. It includes 2 reserved ticket, 2 Sonny’s BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, 2 sides of mac & cheese, 2 drinks and 2 passes to The Florida Aquarium and can only be purchased at the George M. Team Salvatore Fight Like A Kid Night

Friday, May 1st. Gates open at 6:00pm for the 7:00pm game.

Salvatore is three years old. He loves cars & playing with his friends. He wants to become a firefighter when he grows up. He is a new big brother and loves his little sister very much. Salvatore was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and has been fighting hard to beat the disease.

To help support his family in this difficult time, the Tampa Yankees are donating 100% of the ticket proceeds from the Friday, May 1st home game to Salvatore’s family. There will also be a raffle with Tampa Yankees autographed items on the concourse. Raffle proceeds will also go to Salvatore’s family.

Salvatore’s family & doctor are planning to bring him for that evenings home game to meet the team and throw out the first pitch. The night will have several other surprises for Salvatore and his family.

Reserved tickets are $6 each and General Admission tickets are $4 each and can be purchased online through TicketMaster, tybaseball.com or at the Steinbrenner Field Box Office. Please note that TicketMaster has dropped all additional fees for the May 1st home game if you purchase through them.

Threshers Accepting Nominations For Local Military Heroes

Heroes to be Honored at Veterans and Military Appreciation Night on August 15

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Clearwater Threshers are accepting nominations for local veteran and active-duty military heroes to be honored at Veterans and Military Appreciation Night on August 15 at Bright House Field. The evening is presented by Bosley and Bratch, Lawyers for Veterans. The night will feature on-field ceremonies, military vehicles and equipment on display, a silent auction and vendors on the concourse.

The Threshers are asking for nominations of local military personnel, both active and veteran, to be featured in a baseball card set of 30 heroes that will be given away to guests as they enter the ballpark. A total of 1,000 card sets will be distributed, presented by First Priority. Heroes selected for the card set, or their representatives, will be honored on the field prior to the game.

Nominations should include the heroes’ name, rank, status, branch, years of service, and a short career bio. A photo of the nominee for the front of the baseball card should also be included.

Veterans and Military Appreciation Night is in its fifth year at Bright House Field. Representatives from the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard will be on-hand for the evening. Many veterans groups and support organizations will also participate.

The gates will open at 5 p.m. on August 15 for the 6:30 p.m. game against the Tampa Yankees, followed by a post-game fireworks display. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will benefit two local charities, the Haley House Fund and the Injured Warriors Fund. Miracle, Dave Clark host 10th annual Special Needs Camp

Players, coaching staff deliver personal instruction to disabled children

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 20, 2015) – The Fort Myers Miracle and the Dave Clark Foundation will host the 10th annual Special Needs Camp on Saturday, May 9 at Hammond Stadium at the CenturyLink Sports Complex. The camp will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 12 p.m.

Featuring one-on-one instruction from the Miracle players and coaching staff, the Special Needs Camp focuses on teaching children the basic skills of hitting, throwing, catching and fielding. Camp participants can experience the atmosphere of a walking onto a professional baseball field and stepping into the shoes of a professional athlete for a day.

“This is one of the best things we do,” said Miracle Chief Operating Officer Steve Gliner. “The camp is such a special day for the kids, but also for the players and the staff. We are excited and proud to be doing this for a tenth year.”

Kids are asked to bring their own baseball gloves and one adult chaperone is required to be in attendance with each child while attending the camp. Lunch will be provided after the camp is completed. Each participant will receive four tickets to the Miracle game on the evening of Tuesday, May 12, a 7:05 p.m. start against the Palm Beach Cardinals.

The Dave Clark Foundation has partnered with the Miracle for the last decade. Dave Clark is a Cape Coral resident who spent 17 years playing professional baseball despite contracting polio as an infant and losing the full use of his legs. Dave won 600 games in his career and has worked as a coach at the international level. Dave has a career of over 40 years in baseball.

The Fort Myers Miracle are the Class A Advanced minor league baseball affiliate of the Minnesota Twins Major League Baseball club. Since moving to Fort Myers in 1992, the Miracle have qualified for the Florida State League Playoffs eight times and won the Florida State League Championship in 2014. Home games are played at Hammond Stadium at the CenturyLink Sports Complex. The Fort Myers Miracle season begins in April and ends in September. Autism Awareness Night.

The Tampa Yankees will support Autism Awareness as they host their second annual “Autism Awareness Night” on Saturday, April 25th at George M. Steinbrenner Field against the Daytona Tortugas. The game will begin at 6:00 pm & the gates will open to all fans at 5:00 pm. The night is sponsored by Uncle Bob’s Self Storage.

On “Autism Awareness Night,” custom jerseys will be worn by the players & coaches that will be auctioned off during the game. Auction winners will have the opportunity to get their jersey signed by the player or coach who wore it after the game. The auction will benefit The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) at the University of South Florida.

Saturday, April 25th will also be Friends & Family Night, where Family 4-Packs will be available for $38. Included are four reserved tickets, hot dogs, bags of chips, sodas, TY caps & two passes to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Family 4-Packs can only be purchased at the Steinbrenner Field Box Office.

Before the game, kids will have the opportunity to run the bases from 5-5:15 pm & player autographs will be given on the concourse from 5:10-5:30 pm.

Sixth Annual Baseball Basics for Women Clinic Announced

Clinic to be held March 23

Bradenton-MaraudersThe Pittsburgh Pirates and Bradenton Marauders are accepting registrants for the sixth annual Baseball Basics for Women clinic presented in partnership with Manatee Memorial Hospital. The clinic is intended for young adult and adult women interested in learning or refining their baseball fundamentals. It will be held Monday, March 23 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at McKechnie Field.

The registration fee is $45. Pirates Major League and minor league players and coaches will instruct participants in hitting, catching, running the bases, and fielding. Each of the women will also receive a free t-shirt, a goodie bag filled with great prizes , like a free massage at Elements Massage, and a ticket to the Saturday, March 28 Spring Training game against the Blue Jays. Gecko’s Grill & Pub will provide dinner after the clinic. The Kona Bar built by NDC Construction will be open for family members and guests during the clinic and for participants during dinner. All participants will be entered in a raffle for a ceremonial first pitch opportunity for the March 28 game.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Manatee Memorial Foundation. The Manatee Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the health-related needs of the Manatee County community. Community healthcare needs and scholarships for medical education are the benefactors of the Foundation.

Shibuya recipient of Twins’ Killebrew Award

Fort-Myers-Miracle-2014In September, the Minnesota Twins announced that pitcher Tim Shibuya was selected as the Harmon Killebrew Award for Community Service recipient for the Fort Myers Miracle in 2014.

Shibuya, 25, was a 23rd round draft pick of the Twins in 2011 out of the University of California-San Diego. Shibuya participated in multiple youth baseball camps as an instructor and also appeared at numerous events in Lee and Collier County throughout the season.

“It was great having Tim join us on appearances this past season,” said Miracle Manager of Community Relations Ashley Adams. “He is a hands-on, personable and active with kids. Tim makes the time with the Miracle memorable for them and our staff too.”

On the field, Shibuya posted a 7-4 record with a 3.64 earned run average in 28 games, 10 starts. Tossing a total of 89 innings, Shibuya walked just 11 hitters and tallied 59 strikeouts. In his minor league career, Shibuya has made 74 appearances and has a career ERA at 3.62.

The Killebrew Award honors the long time Twins great and Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew. Each season, the General Manager and Field Manager of the four full-season affiliates nominate a candidate that best exemplified the compassion and spirit of Killebrew through work in the local community.

Former Miracle pitcher Logan Darnell was the recipient for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings. Tony Thomas was awarded the honor for the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats and Tanner Vavra the winner for the Single-A Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Dunedin-Blue-Jays-2014The Toronto Blue Jays announced their organizational award winners earlier today, and Dunedin’s RHP Taylor Cole and Hitting Coach Stubby Clapp each received tremendous honors. Cole has been named the winner of the Community Service Award, and Clapp will receive the Bobby Mattick Award for excellence in player development.

RHP Taylor Cole has been named this year’s winner of the Community Service Award. The 25 year-old right-hander was exceptionally active in the Blue Jays initiative programs serving youth. Among the programs Taylor participated in were the team’s annual Bookin’ it to the Ballpark reading program and summer Kickball Tour: a health and wellness initiative promoting an active lifestyle among kids of all ages at various summer camps. Additionally, Taylor led a group of teammates in a “Toys for Tots” shopping spree in support of the non-profit organization. Warm-hearted and selfless in his volunteerism, Taylor was always willing to answer a litany of questions from kids in an earnest manner, and took the extra time to sign last minute autographs in the classroom, at the ballpark and wherever fans could be found. In his words, “It’s our responsibility to give back, as so many have done for us.” On the diamond, Cole led all of minor league baseball with 171 strikeouts this past season.

Stubby Clapp is being recognized as this year’s recipient of the Bobby Mattick Award for excellence in Player Development. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Stubby has spent the last two seasons as the Hitting Coach in Dunedin (A). A member of Canada’s 1999 Pan American Games team, 2004 Canada Olympic team and 2006 World Baseball Classic club, Clapp spent 11 seasons playing professionally, including 23 games for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001. Clapp started his coaching career in 2008 in the Astros system, highlighted by a division crown with Tri City (A) serving as the teams Manager. Stubby was influential in the development of several key Blue Jays farmhands over the past two seasons and his dedication each and every day makes the award richly deserved. During the past season alone, C Derrick Chung, SS Jorge Flores, 1B K.C. Hobson, 3B Gustavo Pierre, RF Matt Newman and CF Dalton Pompey all earned promotions to Double-A and beyond after working with Clapp in Dunedin.

Tampa-YankeesThe Tampa Yankees, in conjunction with the Florida State League and the Miami Marlins, are pleased to announce Austin Kaufman as their 2014 scholarship award winner. The Florida State League Scholarship committee award 12 individuals with educational scholarships. The committee approved the awards after a review of the applications submitted by all the Florida State League teams.

Austin Kaufman is a graduate of Robinson High School. He is currently attending the University of South Florida – St. Pete Campus before he plans to transfer to the University of South Florida – Tampa Campus. Austin plans to get his degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Austin is the son of Stadium Manager, Ron Kaufman who has been with the organization for 16 years.

Austin will be honored at the Tampa Yankees home game on August 7th, versus the Brevard County Manatees at George M. Steinbrenner Field. In addition, he was introduced during a pre-game ceremony at the Miami Marlins game on Sunday, August 3rd along with the other Florida State League teams’ award winners.

The Miami Marlins/Florida State League scholarship program is awarded to students that are an employee of, or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club and must be at least a high school junior by the 2014 fall term. The Miami Marlins have sponsored this program for fifteen years and have contributed over $137,000 to the Florida State Program.

James Dietrich Award Scholarship by FSL and Marlins

Dietrich receives $1,500 for his studies at St. Petersburg College

Bradenton-MaraudersThe Florida State League Scholarship Committee has awarded twelve (12) $1,500 educational scholarships to applicants from each team in the League. The Bradenton Marauders are proud to announce that James Dietrich has been selected as a scholarship recipient.

The scholarship winners will be guests of the Miami Marlins in pre-game ceremonies on Sunday, August 3 at 1:10 PM.

The Committee awarded the scholarships after a review of applications submitted by each candidate. The award is based both on financial need and grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students eligible for this award must be an employee of, or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club and must be at least a high school junior by the 2014 Fall Term.

The scholarship will aid Dietrich during his senior year at St. Petersburg College, where he is majoring in Mass Communications. After completing his associate degree this fall, Dietrich plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. His goal is to work in international journalism. Dietrich has been employed with the Marauders since 2012, working as a seller in the ticket office and as a front desk receptionist at Pirate City.

The Miami Marlins have sponsored this program for 15 years and have contributed a total of $148,500. Florida State League President Chuck Murphy stated, “This program is one of the great things we do in the League and I again congratulate the Directors and General Managers on their dedication and enthusiasm in administering this program.” The purpose of the program is to send a message that an education is key to success in life.

Tampa-YankeesOn Thursday, July 3rd the Tampa Yankees will host Everyday Heroes Night at George M. Steinbrenner Field to honor all those who work to keep our nation safe as they play the Lakeland Flying Tigers at 7:00 pm. The gates open at 5:00pm to all fans.

All active & retired Military, EMT Specialists, Firefighters & Police Officers will receive FREE ADMISSION if they show up with a valid I.D.

In honor of Everyday Heroes Night, each of the players will wear a customized jersey, which will be auctioned off during the game in a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the Everyday Heroes non-profit organization and each purchaser will have the opportunity to have their jersey signed and meet the player it was worn by.

Cardinals having an impact on and off the field

Palm-Beach-CardinalsThe Palm Beach Cardinals, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, have had a terrific first half to the 2014 season. The team landed five All-Star selections to the Florida State League South roster, individuals have won weekly league awards and have been promoted within the organization, and overall, the team has been winning a lot of games.

None of the individual honors or impressive team winning streaks come close to how the 2014 squad has impacted the community off the field.

Vs-Cancer-logoEarlier this month the Cardinals teamed up with the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise money to help the fight against childhood cancer. On Tuesday, June 17th, Roger Dean Stadium hosted the Vs. Cancer Foundation Fundraiser Night at the Ballpark. Members of the Palm Beach Cardinals lined up to get their heads shaved in front of the dugouts following the game that night against the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Palm-Beach-Childrens-HospitalPrior to the event, players on both the Cardinals and Hammerheads collected donations via fundraising pages to support the cause. Once the Cardinals learned that half of all proceeds from the fundraiser would benefit national childhood cancer research and the other half would help local children at Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, the team joined together to make the event a huge success.

The whole team took to social media right away, getting hundreds and hundreds of retweets from family, friends, and fans. Former college teammates and loyal supporters in the Cardinals organization took notice and helped spread the word. News about the team’s efforts spread like wildfire and the donations started pouring in.

The team goal of $5,000 was met after just three days of fundraising and was eventually shattered by more than one thousand dollars. Members of the team, led by Charlie Tilson and Joe Cuda, created an autographed ball giveaway for select fans who donated. The team spread the news via twitter that five autographed balls would be given away at random to those who donated to the cause.

“I’m just glad I could be a part of this,” Cuda said. “I never would have thought that it would have created this much buzz. It’s crazy how the baseball community is so connected together.”

On June 17th, the Cardinals gathered in front of the home dugout following the game to cap an extremely successful fundraising campaign by shaving select team members heads. Players who participated in the head shaving event were, Cuda, Tilson, Iden Nazario, Bruce Caldwell, Alex Mejia, Jesus Montero, Nick Martini and Jimmy Bosco. Even head trainer Keith Joynt stepped into the dugout barber shop to support the cause.

For the Cardinals, this wasn’t a one-time ordeal. Players have been giving back to the community all season long.

In early May, members of the team signed up to visit Palm Beach Children’s Hospital to spend time with children for a few hours before a home game. While just a few guys were asked to ride along for the visit, multiple players asked if they could go as well for fun.

While the fact that the Palm Beach Cardinals ranked in the top five in numerous batting and pitching categories among Florida State League teams in the first half of the season is impressive, the character of the guys in the Cardinals clubhouse is something to be commended.

The 25 players in the Cardinals locker room are truly making a difference in the Palm Beach community.

Star Wars Night, July 19, to Benefit Center for Building Hope

Marauders Will Wear Boba Fett Jerseys and Auction Them Off

Bradenton-MaraudersThe Bradenton Marauders will hold Star Wars Night on Saturday, July 19 when the team hosts the Clearwater Threshers at McKechnie Field. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. Bradenton’s foray into a galaxy far, far away will help benefit the Center for Building Hope in the fight against Cancer.

The Marauders will dress in jerseys custom made to resemble the uniform of iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett. The jerseys will be auctioned off in a silent auction held during the game to benefit the Center for Building Hope. Auction winners will be invited onto the field after the game to receive their jersey and have it autographed by the player of coach wearing it.

Center-for-Building-HopeA survivor’s walk around the warning track will be held at 5:45 to recognize all cancer survivors in attendance. A charity balloon pop is also being held during the game to benefit the Center for Building Hope. Fans will be able to pay $10 or $20 to pop a balloon and receive the prize that corresponds to the chosen balloon.

Fans can get pictures with their favorite Star Wars characters at picturesque McKechnie Field. A full cast of costumed characters will be in attendance. The Marauders also encourage their fans to dress up as their favorite Star Wars characters. A costume contest will be held in the sixth inning to determine the best dressed.

The McKechnie Field ticket office is open on non-gamedays Tuesday-Friday from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. On Monday-Friday gamedays the ticket office is open from noon until the conclusion of the game. The ticket office opens two hours before Saturday, Sunday, and morning games.
